BUCHANAN NATATORIUM

Named after former Nevada System Board of Regent James L. “Bucky” Buchanan II in 1980, the Buchanan Natatorium was officially dedicated on June 12, 1981. The former regent was an avid swimmer and supporter of UNLV athletics until his passing in the fall of 2009. Buchanan Natatorium has hosted and continues to host several major meets. The Western Athletic and West Coast conferences have held their annual championships at the facility. In addition, the swimming portion of the US Olympic Sports Festival brought the likes of Olympic Gold Medalists Matt Biondi, Janet Evans and Pablo Morales to the Buchanan Natatorium in 1987. In 1999 at the 15th annual Winter Invite, Natalie Coughlin broke an American record in the 100 back. The Big West Conference (then known as the Pacific Coast Athletic Association) held its annual men’s and women’s championships at the pool in 1985, and the women’s meet only in 1984 and ’86. The UNLV men’s water polo team, coached by Wes Mock, called the pool home from 1976-80. The natatorium is located adjacent to the men’s and women’s locker rooms within the Paul D. McDermott Physical Education Complex on the UNLV campus.

BUCHANAN RENOVATION Originally dubbed the UNLV Natatorium, the school’s swimming pool was built in 1974 and opened for use in 1975. The natatorium boasts a 50-meter indoor pool with two bulk heads, and has seating for 1,200. The pool has a 733,000-gallon capacity. A full record board was added to the walls of the facility for the 2006-07 season, while a new timing system and results scoreboard was installed prior to the start of the 2007-08 season. Following the end of the 2008-09 season, the natatorium underwent a complete and total renovation from the walls in. The renovation, which was completed in December of 2009, includes the following

• New pool • New pool deck • New diving boards • New bulkhead • New drainage and plumbing system Other changes made to the facility included changing the pool itself from aluminium to concrete, and the shallow end was changed from four feet to eight feet deep, giving the option to use both ends of the pool for competition at the same time.

HEAD COACH JIM REITZ JIM

REITZ HEAD SWIM COACH 31ST SEASON WASHINGTON ‘75 As Jim Reitz enters his 31st season as head coach of the UNLV swimming program, he shows no signs of slowing down in his goal to keep the Rebels recognized as one of the most prominent programs in the nation. The past six years in fact has seen the most successful stretch in the history of the Rebel swimming and diving program, which includes several individual All-American performances as well as a record-run of conference championships. Reitz has now led the UNLV men’s squad to a conference record six straight MWC championships, which are also the first six in school history for the men’s program after several close calls in its 30-year history. Reitz also guided the UNLV women to the 2005 MWC crown to give the Rebels a sweep of the league titles that season. It was the fourth all-time conference championship for the women, as they won the Big West in 1984, 1991 and 1992. The Rebels were also runner-ups on the women’s side in the MWC championship in 2008 and 2009. In addition to last year’s MWC championship title for the Rebel men, UNLV made a bigger splash on the national scene, as not only was the team ranked in the top 25 for the entire season for the first time in school history, the Rebels finished the season with the highest-ever finish at the NCAA Championships, a tie for 21st place. That was in big part due to the Rebels’ 200 medley relay, which became the first in school history with a top-eight finish (eighth), earning relay All-American honors. And for just the second time

in school history, UNLV saw two of its swimmers score individual points, with Kier Maitland (10th in the 1650 free) and Cody Roberts (15th in the 100 fly) both earning honorable mention All-American honors. The past three years at the MWC championship meet have seen complete domination by the Rebels on the men’s side. The 2010 championships saw UNLV post another league title, this time with a 186.50-point lead over the rest of the field. Maitland received his second-straight MWC Swimmer of the Year honor as well. At the 2009 championships, the UNLV men quickly took control from the start and never looked back on the way to a 273.5-point lead over Air Force for the largest win-margin in the 10-year history of the conference. Meanwhile, UNLV’s women came in a strong second, less than 60 points behind BYU. The Rebels set a total of 15 conference records on the way to 20 total first-place finishes. UNLV would also score at the NCAA women’s championships for the first time since 2001, placing 37th thanks to an All-America performance from Zsuzanna Jakabos, while the Rebel men earned a national ranking for the first time at the end of the season, and were a false start away from having their 200 free relay earn All-America status. UNLV would send a total of six men to the 2009 NCAA championships, and two on the women’s side. And for the second straight year, UNLV swept the Swimmer of the Year awards, with Maitland claiming the men’s while Jakabos was honored on the women’s side. 2007-08 was just as impressive a season for the Rebels, as the UNLV men entered the league meet expecting to face a big fight in the quest to defend their title, but instead cruised to the championship with a 157.5-point margin over second place BYU. The UNLV women meanwhile earned a runner-up finish. Even more impressive, the teams combined to win 24 events, and set eight new conference records while posting 16 new UNLV marks. UNLV also swept the Swimmer of the Year and Senior Recognition awards. Following the meet, Kim Bonney represented the women’s team at the NCAA Championships, while UNLV sent five swimmers to the NCAA Men’s Championships. Reitz also saw two of his seniors from the

HEAD COACH JIM REITZ 2007-08 squad swim for their respective country in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Jonas Andersson (Sweden) and Richard Hortness (Canada), while Rebel alum Joe Bartoch also competed for Canada. The five-time Big West Conference Coach of the Year (1984, 1991 and 1994 women’s, 1987 and 1996 men’s) and seven-time MWC Coach of the Year (2000, 2001, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009 men’s, 2005 women’s) has taken programs that were non-existent and built them into consistent winners. Surrounded by talented assistant coaches, Reitz and his staff are devoted to the goal of becoming a program that battles for a place in the top 25 on a yearly basis. He emphasizes consistency and intensity during training. Both the men’s and women’s programs have produced numerous All-Americans while rising to national prominence and consistently scoring at the NCAA Championships under Reitz. In his 29 years at UNLV, Reitz has taken swimmers to the NCAA Men’s Championships 14 times, including seven as members of the Mountain West. The team’s best-ever finish at the national meet was in 1990, when UNLV finished 22nd with 26 points, thanks to Bart Pippenger’s top-10 swims in the 100 and 200 fly. UNLV has sent swimmers to the women’s championships six times, with its best finish coming in 1986 when Sally Fleisher earned All-America honors in the 50 free and scored in two more events to help UNLV place 24th with 34 points. In addition, Reitz has sent several swimmers to represent the U.S. National Team, as well as numerous Rebels that have gone on to swim for their native countries in the Olympic Games, World Championships, Pan Pacific Games and the World University Games. Reitz expects the same consistency and intensity from his students-athletes in the classroom as he does in the pool. Year-in and year-out, the Rebels have had the majority of their swimmers named to the Academic All-Mountain West Conference Team. The Rebels have also earned national recognition for their academic standards, as eight swimmers have won CoSIDA Academic All-District honors over the past four seasons, while Kim Bonney was a second team Academic All-American in 2007-08. A native of Seattle, Wash., Reitz coached 15 years before coming to UNLV. He coached at both Cascade and Seattle Swim clubs and was head of the physical education departments at Shorewood High School in Seattle. Reitz moved to Las Vegas in 1976 and began coaching the Sandpiper Swim Team before taking over the reigns of the Rebel programs in 1980. Reitz earned bachelor’s degrees in physical education and psychology from the University of Washington in 1975. He and his wife, Nina, have two children, Emily (29) and Ben (26).

UNLV SWIMMING BROCK FRASER VOICE OF THE REBEL SWIMMING AND DIVING PROGRAM Entering his 29th season with the Rebel swimming and diving program, Brock Fraser has been the Voice of Rebel Swimming and Diving for almost three decades and is one of the foremost swimming and diving announcers on the west coast. Fraser, a Masters swimmer in the breast, fly and IM, serves as public address anouncer for the Pac-10 and Western Athletic Conference in addition to his work with the Rebels and the Mountain West Conference. For the last 11 years, Fraser has also served as a starter for the annual PGA Las Vegas Invitational golf tournament and is the owner of a printing business in Las Vegas. Fraser and his wife, Barbara, are the parents of three grown sons, all of whom grew up swimming and lifeguarding in Las Vegas.

“JUST GO OFF” On Jan. 21, 1993, Brian Fischer, a distance freestyler on the men’s team from 1991-93, died in a fire and explosion in his apartment. A tenacious competitor with a great work ethic, Fischer had a saying that became the rallying cry of the team for the remainder of that season. His big phrase prior to a race was “just go off.” The 1992-93 team did as Fischer would have wished by moving forward and remembering how he lived life to the fullest. The rallying cry will never be forgotten as it has been inscribed on a banner which hangs in the natatorium.

BIRTH OF A CONFERENCE The Mountain West Conference was conceived on May 26, 1998, when the presidents of eight institutions - Air Force, BYU, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming - decided to form a new NCAA Division I-A intercollegiate athletic conference. TCU began its first year of competition in 2005-06, completing the membership in the MWC as it stands today. THIS IS THE MOUNTAIN WEST From its inception in 1999, the Mountain West Conference has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. The Colorado Springsbased league is noted for its geographic diversity. Some of the most beautiful terrain and landscapes in the nation can be found within Mountain West boundaries, including the majestic Rocky Mountain range, which borders four MWC schools (Utah, BYU, Air Force and Colorado State). The high plains of Wyoming (elevation 7,220 feet – the highest Division I campus in the nation) contrast with the desert city of Las Vegas (the fastest growing metropolitan area in the West) and the Pacific Ocean locale of San Diego State. The southwestern flavor of New Mexico complements the western heritage and culture of Fort Worth, Texas, home of the MWC’s newest member, TCU. ACHIEVEMENTS MWC members have participated in 41 bowl games in 11 years with eight of the nine schools going to at least one postseason event. The MWC has earned 50 postseason bids in men’s basketball, including 26 NCAA Tournament appearances, while women’s basketball has tallied 51 postseason bids, 29 NCAA bids, five Sweet 16 appearances and one Elite Eight berth since 2000. The MWC has sent at least 30 teams to NCAA postseason events each of the past 11 years while capturing three NCAA team championships during that span.

YEAR IN REVIEW From the gridiron to the diamond, Mountain West Conference teams enjoyed a banner year in 2009-10. For the third consecutive year, the MWC sent a record five football teams to bowl games and posted the best win percentage among the 11 FBS conferences for the third time in six years. Three MWC teams were ranked in the final BCS Standings, Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN Coaches polls for the second straight year. TCU’s No. 4 BCS ranking marked the highest finish by a non-automaticqualifying team in the final BCS Standings. The Horned Frogs’ automatic bid to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl marked the MWC’s third BCS bowl game. A league-record four men’s basketball teams represented the MWC in the 2010 NCAA Tournament, marking the 10th time in the last 11 years multiple teams have gone to the Big Dance. In women’s basketball, San Diego State captured the MWC Tournament crown and became the fourth MWC team to advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. The Colorado State volleyball team became the third straight MWC squad to advance to the NCAA regional semifinals. In women’s soccer, San Diego State and BYU each advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Student-athletes from BYU, TCU and UNLV represented the MWC in the NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships, with the Rebels placing a program best tie for 21st. A league record-tying six MWC men’s golf teams were invited to the 2010 NCAA Regionals, while TCU and UNLV advanced to the NCAA Championships. Multiple MWC women’s tennis teams appeared in the NCAA Tournament for the ninth consecutive year with TCU, UNLV and Utah qualifying in 2010. San Diego State joined regular-season champion BYU in the NCAA Softball Championship. MWC champion TCU became the first Mountain West team to win a NCAA baseball super regional and advance to the College World Series. THE UNIVERSITY

UNLV CAMPUS FACTS

C

ombining the excitement of an urban location with the charm of a traditional campus, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas offers students a full educational and social experience. Just decades old, UNLV has maintained a healthy rate of growth in enrollment, programs and scholastic excellence as part of the eight-component Nevada System of Higher Education. Located in the heart of one of the world’s most vibrant and dynamic cities, UNLV has matured along with the Las Vegas area. With enrollment more than doubling the last decade, the tremendous growth has meant a flurry of construction resulting in a campus setting boasting academic and athletic facilities second to none. Steadily becoming a traditional residential university, UNLV provides on-campus housing for more than 2,000 students. A variety of student clubs and organizations along with 26 Greek organizations supplement the social development of students. From within its 15 schools and colleges, including the new William S. Boyd School of Law, UNLV is also becoming a leading research institution of the West. The school’s scientific, social science, and business programs attract millions of dollars in research grants annually to fund projects in desert biology, nuclear waste transportation, laser physics, public opinion surveys and many others. In addition to traditional student programs, UNLV serves diverse local, national and international communities through its Educational Outreach Division, offering Summer Term, Continuing Education and Distance Education programs enrolling more than 53,000 students annually. With its Performing Arts Center, the campus is the cultural hub of Southern Nevada. World-class orchestras and soloists, dance and theater arts combine to provide a broad selection of concerts and stage productions. The Barrick Lecture Series and several campus organizations bring noted speakers to the University, and local and visiting artists show their works in the Donna Beam Fine Art Gallery. UNLV has excellent athletic facilities as well, many open for student and public use. Opened in 1957 as the southern regional division of the University of Nevada with a total of 28 students, UNLV now is home to more than 29,000 students coming from every county in Nevada, all 50 U.S. states and 88 countries. Much of UNLV’s tremendous expansion is the result of support from the Nevada Legislature and

the state’s taxpayers. Private donors have played an important role as well. These gifts support new facilities and programs and, most important, provide the scholarship incentives that bring Nevada’s best and brightest student scholars to campus. UNLV operates an on-campus Center for Business and Economic Research, Center for Economic Education, Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies (in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency), Desert Biology Research Center, Center for Survey Research, Nuclear Waste Transportation Research Center and other research and public-service centers. Offering 108 undergraduate programs and 138 graduate tracts, UNLV graduated a class of more than 5,000 last year. The University operates on a semester system and is a member of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the Council of Graduate Schools, the American Council of Education and the Western College Association. All of the University’s academic programs are fully accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, and many programs have received further accreditation from independent national accreditation bodies.

ATHLETICS DIRECTOR

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS JIM LIVENGOOD

B

ringing with him a wealth of experience and the reputation as one of the nation’s top administrators, Jim Livengood was introduced as UNLV’s 11th full-time Director of Athletics on Dec. 17, 2009. Livengood wasted no time getting to work, as less than two weeks later he hired Bobby Hauck as the 10th head coach in Rebel football history. Just three months after that it was announced that a new, state-of-the-art basketball practice facility, the Mendenhall Center, would be built, with construction starting later in the year. Livengood came to UNLV following a successful tenure of more than 15 years at the University of Arizona where he oversaw an athletics program that annually competed for championships not only in the Pac-10 Conference but also at a national level, maintained a high academic standard for its student-athletes and continually operated its $43 million budget in the black. His fiscal leadership helped Arizona remain one of the lone black-ink athletics programs among a small handful of institutions that rely exclusively on generated funds and do not receive state-appropriated monies. During his time in Tucson, he served as the Pacific-10 Conference president, chair of the Pac-10 Athletic Directors Revenue Sharing Committee and a member of the conference's Bowl Committee and Basketball Tournament Subcommittee. He also was a member of the Rose Bowl Management Committee, the NCAA Fellows program, NACDA President, and chair of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee, on which he served five years. His work at Arizona and its extension on the national level earned him an Athletic Director of the Year Award from the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics in 2006 for Division I-A.

54

Livengood initiated Campaign Arizona, which raised more than $130 million for athletic facility improvements and endowments while the Wildcats maintained a top-25 competitive record in the NACDA Directors' Cup (formerly Sears Cup), including high rankings of sixth in 1993-94, fourth in 1994-95, seventh in 1995-96, sixth in both 1996-97 and 1997-98 and ninth in 2001-02. That record reflects success throughout Arizona's broad-based program, highlighted by participation in the 1994 and 2001 NCAA Men's Final Four and champions of the 1997 NCAA Men's National Basketball Tournament. Arizona also won the 1994, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2006 and 2007 NCAA Women's Softball College World Series titles, the 1996 and 2000 NCAA Women's Golf titles and the 2008 men's and women's NCAA Swimming Championships. UA's student-athlete graduation rate continued to be historically higher than that of the general student body rate during his tenure at UA. Nearly 100 student-athletes earned conference or regional all-academic honors, and 20 percent of UA student-athletes attained honors-level cumulative grade point averages. Livengood is a member of the NCAA Fellows Program to mentor new athletic directors, has served as a member of the NCAA Peer Review Team from 1994-99, the NCAA Gender Equity Task Force, and the Women's Committee on Athletics. He has been a member of the NACDA Preseason Football Games Committee since 2000 and was a member of the NACDA Strategic Planning Committee from 1999-2001. He served as NACDA president in 1998-1999, and in 1999 was named Division I-A Athletic Director of the Year. He is also a member of the Division 1-A Athletic Directors Association, having served as president of that association in 1998. Livengood spent six years as the Athletics Director at Washington State University from 198893 where he developed what is still widely regarded as a model gender-equity program. In addition he laid the groundwork for a student-athlete wellness center that is regarded as one of the finest in the nation. Livengood began his administrative career in 1980 as the Associate Director for Development and Public Relations at Washington State before becoming the Athletics Director at

Born March 28, 1945, in Walla Walla, Wash., he received his bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University in 1968 and completed his fifthyear education requirement for teaching certification at Central Washington University in 1972. He taught and served as an assistant football coach and track coach at Moses Lake High School in Washington in 1968-69, and as head football and basketball coach and counselor at Ephrata High School in Washington from 1972-80 before moving into athletics administration. Six different Rebel sports were represented during ceremonies, as the seven-person, two-team class was inducted into the UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame as the Class of 2010 on Oct. 1. Five former Rebel standout players, one head coach and a distinguished contributor joined two record-setting teams in being inducted. Born in 1987, UNLV’s Athletics Hall of Fame has now grown to 105 members strong. Under the hall’s bylaws, former student-athletes must have completed their eligibility at least 10 years earlier to be selected. Coaches and administrators must have stopped working at the University five years previous. All classes now enter on a biennial basis. JEREMY ANDERSON (1996-2000) was prolific performer on the golf course and in the classroom and is the only athlete in school history to be a three-time All-American and three-time academic AllAmerican. A member of head coach Dwaine Knight’s 1998 National Championship squad, Anderson had the unusual honor of being voted player of the year in two different conferences (1999 Western Athletic and 2000 Mountain West). A first team All-American in 1999 and 2000, he was also a second team choice in 1998 as he posted three finishes in the top 30 at NCAA Championships. DANIEL BARBER (1989-92) is one of only two All-Americans in Rebel soccer history, as he was a Freshman All-American in 1989 and then a third team selection two seasons later. UNLV’s all-time assists leader with 26, Barber was first team all-conference and all-region in 1991 and first team all-league again in ‘92. JULIE CRANDALL (1995-98) is regarded as the best catcher in UNLV’s storied softball history and is one of five Rebels to be a multipleseason All-American as she was voted third team in both 1995 and ‘98. A three-time first team all-conference honoree, Crandall started behind the plate as a freshman for the best team in school history, helping the 1995 Rebels to a tie for third place at the Women’s College World Series. NICK GARRITANO (1991-94) was arguably the nation’s top place-kicker as a senior and he left as UNLV’s second-leading scorer in history with 240 points (four points behind running back Mike Thomas). Leading the Rebels in scoring three of his four seasons, Garritano was a 1994 semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award after leading all of college football in 50-yard field goals made, nailing five of seven attempts from 50-59 yards. ninth in batting average (.363) and still ranks fourth at the school with 43 homeruns. The 1997 First Team Freshman All-American was a two-time preseason All-American and postseason all-conference honoree. The 1994 UNLV FOOTBALL TEAM is one of two in school history to win a conference championship and head coach Jeff Horton’s squad did it in style with a stunning 32-27 upset of arch-rival Nevada, Reno at Sam Boyd Stadium. The Rebels, who at 5-1 shared the league title with UNR and Louisiana-Lafayette, earned the Big West’s lone postseason bid via tie-breaker and went on to rout Central Michigan 52-24 in Las Vegas Bowl III to finish with an overall record of 7-5 and post the program’s most wins in 10 years. The 1985 UNLV MEN’S SOCCER TEAM was the winningest group in program history, setting multiple school records, including most wins and fewest losses as head coach Barry Barto’s squad finished 18-2-2. The Rebels, who also reeled off a record 18-game unbeaten streak during the campaign, finished the season ranked fourth in the nation by Soccer America after rising as high as second that fall. HEAD COACH DR. LARRY EASLEY (Deceased) (1992-03) coached the UNLV men’s tennis team longer than anyone in history, was named conference coach of the year three times and was also twice named Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Coach of the Year in 1998 and 2001. His all-time record of 141-120 included leading UNLV to three Big West Conference championships. Easley produced four of UNLV’s five all-time men’s All-Americans, including two individual national champions when Luke Smith won the NCAA singles championship and then teamed with Tim Blenkiron to capture the NCAA doubles title in 1997. DISTINGUISHED CONTRIBUTOR BOB MENDENHALL is the owner and chief executive officer of the Las Vegas Paving Corporation. A longtime supporter of the UNLV program, Mendenhall most recently became a major part of a group that is building and donating a new multi-million dollar practice facility for the Runnin’ Rebels.
