PALATIAL SOCCER COMPLEX
PETER JOHANN MEMORIAL FIELD The dedication of Peter Johann Memorial Soccer Field during the 1983 season marked a special occasion for all those who were involved with the building of UNLV’s first on-campus soccer facility. Despite the fact that UNLV soccer has been around since 1974, Rebel teams in the past never truly had a “home field” to call their own. And, when former men’s soccer head coach Barry Barto assumed his position prior to the 1982 season, building an on-campus soccer field became a priority. Barto approached then-athletics director Brad Rothermel to work out a solution to the problem and the two settled on the current location, where the old softball field had previously existed. Once the site was finalized, a huge community effort was instrumental in the building of the soccer field. The field is named after the late son of Kenneth F. Johann, a real estate businessman who has lived in Las Vegas for more than 40 years. Johann has been a strong 4
supporter of Rebel soccer and he and his wife, Alice, set up a scholarship fund in memory of their son. Thus, Johann was more than happy to be a part of the overall community effort. Johann Field played host to the 1983 ISAA Senior Bowl All-Star Game where the West team posted a 4-0 victory. Numerous international matches have also been played on its pitch and it is also the site of the annual UNLV/Nike Soccer Classic for both the men’s and women’s squads. The facility has also played host to three Las Vegas Soccer Spectaculars. The inaugural contest in 2002 featured the WUSA’s San Jose CyberRays and the San Diego Spirit, while in the spring of 2003, the Boston Breakers took on San Jose. The final spectacular was in March of 2003, between UNLV and the Mexican Olympic Team, who had just claimed a spot in the 2004 Athens Games. In the spring of 2007, a sellout crowd watched the first-ever MLS contest on the UNLV campus, as Real 2010 UNLV MEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE
Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids played to a 0-0 draw in an exhibition contest on March 31. In 2004, the UNLV men’s soccer team posted its 125th victory at the site, achieving the milestone in the second to last game of the year. The Rebels eclipsed the century mark in 174 games over 16 years. With the addition of endzone seats in 1997, the grandstands now offer seating for approximately 2,500 spectators in an open seating arrangement, and the facility boasts natural grass, a press box, and lights The Rebel Alumni Park, dedicated in 2002, was made possible for night matches. The facility was by the efforts of alumni and friends of the Rebel soccer program. most recently upgraded during the summer of 2006, as a $300,000 renovation led to a new irrigation system as well as new sod and grass for the field. Generally regarded as one of the top college soccer facilities in the West, Johann Field celebrates its 28th season in 2010.

The 2010 UNLV men’s soccer season marks the 36th year in which the Peter Johann Memorial Scholarship will benefit a Las Vegas native on the team. Freshman forward Joaquin Rivas of Las Vegas High School in Las Vegas is this year’s scholarship recipient. He is the son of Joaquin and Marina Rivas. Since 1974, the UNLV men’s soccer program has been quite fortunate to have the support of Las Vegas businessman Ken Johann and his wife, Alice. It was that fall in 1974 when the Johanns’ son, Peter, died in a sporting accident. The next fall, the Johanns decided to honor their late son with a memorial scholarship. Established in 1975, the Peter Johann Memorial Scholarship assists one deserving student-athlete in attending classes at UNLV while participating in intercollegiate soccer. The scholarship is awarded to the student-athlete each season who demonstrates excellence in six areas: academic performance, techniques and tactics of soccer, team loyalty, cooperation, leadership and endurance. In return for their generosity, UNLV’s first-ever on-campus soccer field was dedicated to the memory of Peter Johann when it was built on the north side of the campus in 1983. The Rebels have called Peter Johann Memorial Field home for the past 27 years.

RICH RYERSON
HEAD COACH FIRST YEAR UNLV ‘87
Former Rebel standout Rich Ryerson was named the fifth head men’s soccer coach in UNLV program history on April 7, 2010. He took over the helm of the program after spending the past two years as an assistant coach under former UNLV coach Mario Sanchez. “Rich Ryerson is the perfect head coach for our Men’s Soccer program,” UNLV Athletics Director Livengood said. “He brings a great blend of soccer experience and a true love of Rebel Soccer. I can’t think of a better combination for the young men who will join our program. As excited as I am for Rich, I’m equally excited for our program.” “It’s a dream come true, to become head coach at my alma mater,” said Ryerson. “UNLV has made such a big impact on my life, it’s been the foundation for everything I’ve accomplished and experienced in the sport of soccer.” One of four Ryerson brothers to play for the Rebels (Rob, Kenny, Tim), Rich Ryerson was a four-year starting defender/midfielder for the Rebels from 1983-86 and led UNLV to three NCAA tournament appearances and three straight conference championships during his time in Las Vegas. In his junior season, the Rebels posted a program-best 18-2-2 mark and No. 4 final national

2010 UNLV MEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE
Q: What first got you first involved in soccer? A: The European influence in my ancestry, my grandfather was a soccer player, as well as growing up in the soccer hotbed that was Maryland. We had the NASL and the Washington Diplomats, so the best players in the world were playing on that team when I was growing up. We started out as a track family first, however. My dad was a track coach, my mom was a basketball coach, but we did everything, multi-sported, swam, ran track, but we started playing soccer when me and my older brother Rob and I were 8. He was just 11 months older so we always seemed to tag up and do well together wherever we played. It just seemed to come naturally. We were always playing in the backyard and the house, we couldn’t get enough of the sport. Q: What is your top soccer highlight thus far, either as a player or coach? A: The highlight really is getting this job, to be the head coach of the school that I played for and that I represented, and feel so passionate about. To walk across the field that we laid in 1983, and the impact that this program had on me, I want to be able to give that experience to the current players. Q: What are your goals for UNLV for the upcoming season and during the next five years? A: The coming season, my goals are to exceed all expectations, on the field, in the classroom, involvement with our players in the community, and fund-raising. If we accomplish all that, then I’ll turn my attention towards the next five years.
Q: With youth soccer being big in the local community, do you see that as an advantage in helping to build more support for the team? A: We have to get out in the community, we have to be visible to all the youth leagues. We have to be what the kids are aspiring to be. We are the only Division I men’s soccer program in the state. We are the only Division I men’s soccer program in Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Hawaii. We have to be the pinnacle for people that are playing, that aspire to play at this level. Q: What challenges will you have to overcome in being a head coach for the first time? A: Biggest challenge right now is just the administrative side for me, the protocol, understanding all the specifics of the financial aid for players and everything that I’m dealing with for the first time. Something I’m also having to watch out for is becoming to close to the players. As an assistant, I was the guy they confided in, but not as the head coach. It’s different and I need to make the hard decisions and do what’s best for the team. Q: What style will the Rebels be playing under you? A: We’re going to take chances. We’re going to take risks to score, risk leaving ourselves exposed in the defense in the hope of scoring goals. I want it to be high scoring, exciting soccer for our fans, with an element of toughness as well. We have the players to play this style of offense, it’s what I prefer to, and what I feel we’re best suited for this season.
Q: What else is needed or necessary to turn UNLV into a consistent top-25 program? A: Just need to have the right amount of support, from the athletic department and the university, and for both them and the team to have the belief that the team can make a difference nationwide. When we had national success in the ‘80s, we just had a will to win, a desire to win, and maybe it’s just as simple as instilling that will and desire again. The pride that I want our players to have in playing for UNLV, that will help lead our program where it needs to go.

One year after posting the first winning season for the program since 2002, the last thing the Rebels expected were drastic changes as UNLV was set to again challenge for the conference title after coming within minutes of reaching the championship game of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament in 2009. However, big change was exactly what UNLV found itself dealing with, as head coach Mario Sanchez resigned in February after four years, and during the time before a new coach was hired, six players were lured away to other programs. The wait for a hiring was definitely worth it, however, as the Rebels looked to their past for an answer to their future. That answer came in the form of former Rebel standout Rich Ryerson, as he took over as the head of the program in April of this year. Ryerson was a member of the best teams ever to take the field for the Rebels in the sport of men’s soccer, and says he can not wait to help return his alma mater to its former glory. With the losses the Rebels took on their roster, Ryerson feels the biggest thing the team needs is to believe in itself, that it can succeed with the players that did stay on board and showed that they wanted to be a part of the UNLV tradition. “I feel we have the depth and experience to have a strong team this year,” said Ryerson. “If we can get our players to have confidence in that during the season, that should give us a good shot to have success.” Having served as assistant coach for the past two years under Sanchez, Ryerson is very familiar with the returning talent, and is happy with the teams that is in place for 2010, which features 12 returnees and 11 newcomers. He notes that the team’s immediate goals will not change - he wants the Rebels in the hunt for the MPSF title, and the first way to accomplish that is to make sure of a top-six finish (top six teams in the eight-team league will advance to the postseason event). “The conference tournament is like a whole new season, if you can get some good bounces, that can lead to a berth in the NCAA, which of course is the ultimate goal every year.”
18
Ryerson is also aware of the team’s struggles in league play the past few years, and is making an emphasis to treat the non-conference season as a way to work hard and prepare for MPSF play, which is when he wants to see the team reaching its peak. Despite the personnel losses the team endured, Ryerson is very happy with what he has on offense. “We are going to live and die by our attack this year. We’re going to risk going forward, with the goal of putting up high numbers, and I will not be surprised to see some 4-3, 3-2 games this season. I feel that will be exciting for the fans as well to see high-scoring contests.” While Ryerson prefers a open attack, his main reason in unleashing such an offense this year is mostly due to the offensive firepower the Rebels will boast this season. UNLV returns the top scoring forward duo in the conference, as forwards Nick Marshall (sophomore) and Stephen Sifuentes (senior) finished third and fourth in the league last year with 19 and 18 points, respectively, and both forwards posted eight goals. UNLV also returns a pair of experienced defenders, who after spending 2009 in the midfield will return to anchor the backline. Ryerson is counting on seniors Jaime Calvo (2009 All-MPSF selection) and Drew Gleason to strengthen up the backline that will be breaking in several newcomers.
FORWARDS This is one area that Ryerson not only has no concerns about entering the year, but is so confident with what he has that the entire game plan is centered around them. And they have given no reason to doubt his faith. Marshall became the first Rebel freshman to even earn all-region honors last year (Third Team All-West), while Sifuentes has scored some of the team’s biggest goals over his three years on the team. “Marshall is a very explosive goal scorer, every team would love to have a scorer like him,” said Ryerson. “With his speed, anticipation and ability to get in good spots to score, that makes him a dangerous threat for us out front.” Sifuentes, meanwhile, is already at a pro-level according to Ryerson. Entering his senior year, he has the ability to hold off players and then make a strong move towards the goal to either take a shot or set up his teammates. Looking at the backups, Las Vegas native and freshman Joaquin Rivas will get plenty of time early up front, and is a player similar to Sifuentes in terms of his strengths.
2010 UNLV MEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE
Another freshman, Rory Emslie, played for the Scottish U-18 National team, giving him international experience that will be a key for his development. He also is strong in the air. Two more Rebels that will be in the mix for significant playing time are junior Richard Abrego and sophomore Robert Garcia. Abrego missed 2009 but is back and ready to play again in front of his hometown crowd after a summer in which he played for the PDL champions. The final forward is Garcia, who gives the Rebels great speed off the bench, and who scored three points as a freshman.
MIDFIELDERS This is the youngest group on the team, but leading the way will be a pair of sophomores that started a combined 32 games last season, Zach Kupfer and Jonny Espinoza. “We will be putting a lot on the line by relying on sophomores to anchor our midfield,” said Ryerson. “But I feel good with the experience we have in Kupfer and Espinoza. Kupfer will be very key to our plans and will be the one we’ll look to control action in the midfield.” “Kupfer is an intense competitor and is a very strong offensive player,” Ryerson noted. He posted five goals and 13 assists in 2009. Espinoza, meanwhile, has a soft touch on his passes and excels at finding players on the attack. He finished with two goals and a team-high four assists last year for eight points. A freshman that could break into the starting lineup is Jose Mendoza (San Francisco, Calif.), a strong, powerful player with great awareness around the ball. Another player that will be in the mix is Camilo Valencia, a senior who is one of the hardest workers on the team and brings a lot of experience to the role. Other freshmen midfielders include Shane Panther (Las Vegas), and Adam Meltz (San Diego, Calif.), both of whom will give UNLV depth at the position.
DEFENDERS After graduating the majority of the backline from a year ago, Ryerson made the move to switch positions for a pair of seniors to give the Rebels more experience on defense. It’s not a new role for the two however, as both Calvo and Gleason were defenders in 2008 before moving up the midfield last season. “I was looking to give us some leadership and experience on the backline, and that’s what we will get back there with Calvo and Gleason,” said Ryerson. Calvo is a very technical player, while Gleason is more aggressive and will go after the ball. Both played and started in 18 games for UNLV in 2009. In the middle of the line will be Mike Mota, who uses his size (6-2) and speed to cover a lot of ground, and is able to surprise teams with his ability to send long balls out of the back. Next up are a pair of sophomore transfers, Sam Nicholson and Ryan Robertson. “Both are experienced in their home countries (Nicholson from England, Robertson from Scotland), and should use that experience to their advantage playing for us,” said Ryerson. A third transfer is Marcus Greer, a strong athlete who will finally see the field this year after injuries at his previous school, University of San Diego. Scott Branson, who redshirted the 2009 season, is also in the mix to get significant playing time as a defender after turning in an impressive spring practice for the Rebels. The final two defenders are a pair of Las Vegas natives who will add to the Rebels’ depth at the position, Angelo Soro and Kyle Mellies.
GLEASON and freshman Ryan Harding. This is Cook’s second year on the team after redshirting 2009 while Roland Swanson played in every game. Though this will be the first Division I action for Cook, Ryerson is impressed with his knowledge of the game and ability to organize the defense. Harding (Troutdale, Ore.), meanwhile, is expected to give Cook a challenge for the starting role after leading his club team to the youth soccer national championship title this past July. Harding also earned the Golden Gloves award, awarded to the best goalie in the tournament.
SCHEDULE For the second year in a row the Rebels will undertake a very challenging schedule, including several teams that reached the NCAA tournament in 2009. Some of the early highlights including road games in September at Stanford and California as part of the Cal Legacy Classic. The Rebels will also take a trip to the Green Bay Soccer Classic, which includes a game with host Wisconsin-Green Bay, while the UNLV Rebel Classic on Sept. 24 and 26 features not only a game against UC Irvine, but will also have a matchup between UNLV and Mount St. Mary’s, coached by former Rebel All-American and Ryerson’s brother, Robbie Ryerson. For the first time, the MPSF will be split into two divisions, with the top two teams advancing to the postseason tournament, along with the next best two squads. Though UNLV is arguably in the tougher division (the Mountain Division also includes Air Force, Denver and New Mexico), the Rebels know that the path to postseason play is success in their home games. The league schedule begins with a road contest at New Mexico on Oct. 1, followed by a pair of home games against Air Force and Denver. The regular-season finale will be a home contest against New Mexico on Nov. 6, while Sacramento State will host the 2010 MPSF Tournament on Nov. 11-14.

Thanks to the addition of a very strong freshman class, head coach Mario Sanchez and the UNLV Rebels looked ready to make a strong run at the school’s first-ever Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship. And nothing changed that outlook in the beginning of the season as the Rebels notched several impressive victories. The going got tougher in league play, however, as the goals started to dry up for UNLV. The team would redeem itself, however, coming within minutes of reaching the championship game of the MPSF Tournament. Though the Rebels did not accomplish their final goal, there’s no doubt it was a successful 2009 campaign, as most notably they recorded the first winning season for the program since 2002. There had been questions as to from where the offense would come after the loss of the top two offensive threats from 2008 - forwards Danny Cruz and Lamar Neagle - both of whom moved onto the MLS.That question was answered very quickly, with freshman Nick Marshall making a name for himself in the very first game, scoring a golden goal on the road to give UNLV a 1-0 double-overtime win at 23rd-ranked Cal Poly. Marshall followed that performance with a two-goal outing against Central Arkansas on Sept. 4 in the UNLV Nike Invitational, though the Bears rallied late to stun the Rebels 3-2. UNLV made sure there would not be another letdown in the next game, blowing past Robert Morris. Six of the seven goals in the game came from newcomers to the team, giving a sign to all that the Rebels had not only reloaded on offense, but they would be a force to deal with all season long. Marshall also added a goal and an assist in the win over RMU, on

the way to earning the first of two MPSF Player of the Week honors. Up next was a trip to the state of Oklahoma for a tournament at Oral Roberts. UNLV would finish with a double-overtime scoreless tie against the host Golden Eagles, and then posted a 1-0 win over Centenary to stand at 3-1-1 on the year, thanks to a goal from junior Stephen Sifuentes. The next weekend was the UNLV Rebel Classic, and first up was Illinois-Chicago, who had started the season ranked in the top 25. UNLV trailed almost the entire game, but a late score from freshman Zack Kupfer tied the game, and the Rebels would pull out a 1-1 tie. on Sept. 18. The freshmen duo of Marshall and Kupfer then combined for three goals in a 3-2 win over Florida Gulf Coast on Sept. 20 to end the tournament, and Marshall would be named MPSF Player of the Week. UNLV next played a pair of games in California, suffering a 3-0 loss at third-ranked UCLA (Sept. 27) before bouncing back with a 1-0 win at UC Riverside, with Sifuentes again providing the lone goal in the contest played on Oct. 3. In the last non-conference outing, Sifuentes contributed a pair of scores to lead UNLV past Houston Baptist 4-2, and received the MPSF Player of the Week for that performance. That gave the Rebels a 6-2-2 record coming into the start of conference play. Though its was a confident UNLV squad that began the league season, back-to-back home losses to Cal State Bakersfield (Oct. 16) and Seattle (Oct. 18) abrutly stopped the team’s momeumtum. That continued the next weekend as well, with UNLV ending up in a 2-2 tie at Denver despite

another two-goal performance from Sifuentes on Oct. 23, and a 2-1 loss at Air Force on Oct. 25. UNLV finally broke the winless streak with a 1-0 victory at San Jose on Oct. 30. Kupfer posted the gamewinner, which gave UNLV its first NSCAA ALL-FAR WEST REGION conference road victory since the 2004 season. THIRD TEAM That was followed by an impressive Nick Marshall defensive performance, with the Rebels holding league leader (and MOUNTAIN PACIFIC eventual champion) Sacramento SPORTS FEDERATION HONORS State to just one goal in a 1-1 doubleovertime tie on Nov. 1 in Las Vegas. Junior Jamie Calvo was honored for ALL-CONFERENCE his performance over the two-game stretch in which UNLV allowed just SECOND TEAM one goal, as he was named the MPSF Jaime Calvo Defensive Player of the Week. The regular-season finale HONORABLE MENTION came at New Mexico, which was a Nicholas DeLeon 2-0 loss on Nov. 7. However, while in years past this would have been Stephen Sifuentes scores one of his two goals the final game, UNLV’s season was not over as the league had brought against Houston Baptist. He tied for the team lead with eight on the year and added 18 points. back the MPSF Tournament after a five-year absence. And though they were seeded sixth, UNLV took full advantage of the “second season,” as it poured in four goals against third-seeded San Jose State, all from different players, to record a 4-2 victory on Nov. 12 and move to the semifinal round. There they met Sacramento State, and in what turned out to be a defensive battle, the game was within minutes of going to penalty kicks to decide who would move on to the championship game. The Hornets, though, came up with a goal two minutes into Calvo Neagle the second overtime, ending the Rebels’ season at 8-7-4. While they fell short of a league championship, the Rebels knew the future was bright thanks to their new offensive stars, beginning with Marshall. Despite coming off the bench in all MPSF PLAYER OF THE WEEK but three games, he still led the team in Nick Marshall - Sept. 8 scoring and ranked Nick Marshall - Sept. 21 in the top three in the Stephen Sifuentes - Oct. 12 MPSF in both goals Jaime Calvo - Nov. 2 (eight) and points (19). Marshall also became the first-ever Rebel freshman to earn all-region honors, as he was named NSCAA All-West Region Third Team. Sifuentes was right behind Marshall in scoring with eight goals and 18 points. Two freshmen were third and fourth on the team, with Kupfer finishing with five goals and three assists for 13 points, and Roberto Farfan adding two goals and four assists for eight points. And while UNLV had senior Will Ziegahn for just one season after he transferred in from Missouri State, he still made a big impact with three scores for six points, including one game-winner on the year. Two more Rebels were honored by the MPSF, with Calvo earning a second-team selection, and sophomore midfielder Nicholas DeLeon being honorable mention.

AL BEAIRD EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR MOUNTAIN PACIFIC SPORTS FEDERATION
The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) was established during the 1992-1993 season to serve the competitive needs of member institutions from the Big West, Pacific-10 and Western Athletic Conferences, as well as other selected universities in the western United States; and to provide championships competition for Division I intercollegiate Olympic sports in a conference setting. The founding principles on which the MPSF was originally formed were to provide enhanced competition and championship opportunities for sports without conference affiliation; to contain the costs of competition; and to ensure the survival of sports impacted by Title IX and other fiscal pressures. The Federation has also served as an incubator for emerging women’s sports and as a safe harbor for sports impacted by conference realignments. Since its inaugural season the Federation has seen its primary conference membership grow by the addition of the Mountain West and West Coast Conferences and their respective member institutions, as well as the addition of women’s water polo, women’s gymnastics, women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s swimming. As a testament to its viability, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation continues to successfully navigate the ever-changing sea of college sports by fostering contraction and expansion of its sports portfolio to meet the dynamic needs of its members. As the MPSF begins its 19th year in 2010-2011 and continues its legacy of championship competition, it affirms the vision of its founders and the relevance of its three founding principles, particularly during today’s tumultuous economic times. In 2010-2011, the MPSF will sponsor competition in 11 intercollegiate Olympic sports, adding men’s and women’s swimming for the first time, while serving approximately 1,800 student-athletes on 86 teams from 38 universities in 12 western states. All MPSF teams compete at the NCAA Division I level in men’s soccer, men’s and women’s water polo, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s gymnastics, men’s and women’s swimming, women’s lacrosse and men’s volleyball. MPSF champions are eligible to compete in NCAA Championships with MPSF men’s soccer, men’s and women’s water polo, and men’s volleyball champions earning automatic qualification into NCAA championship events.

Al Beaird has been the Federation’s only executive director, taking the reins in December 1997. Beaird presided over the transition of the Federation from what was initially a scheduling alliance to what is now nationally recognized as the most successful NCAA Division I Olympic sports conference. Beaird directs all aspects of MPSF competition, including championships, officiating, rules compliance, scheduling, media relations, broadcasting, sponsorships and NCAA relations, while also shaping conference legislation, facilitating annual meetings and providing direction and communication for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Administrative and Executive Committees. In 2004, Beaird completed a four-year term, three years as chair, on the NCAA Men’s Water Polo Championships Committee and one year as chair of the inaugural NCAA Men’s and Women’s Water Polo Rules Committee. Beaird feels privileged to work with coaches and student-athletes who compete at the highest levels, including those who compete on USA national teams as coaches or players in international and Olympic competition. With his in NCAA Olympic sports, Beaird has been called upon to serve as liaison to the national governing bodies for amateur athletics in the United States and the United States Olympic Committee. Beaird received his undergraduate degree in physical education from UC Davis before attaining his Masters of Business Administration from California State University, Sacramento. Beaird, who lives in Woodland, California, has two daughters who have been active in high school and club sports.
Joining the Federation for the first-time in women’s swimming is Northern Colorado and University of San Diego, while former MPSF members Loyola Marymount and Cal Poly have also elected compete for the Federation’s women’s swimming championship. UC Irvine will rejoin the MPSF in women’s indoor track and field after a half-decade absence. During the 2009-2010 season, the MPSF teams won four NCAA championship team titles, bringing the Federation’s total to 61 since the first season of competition in 1992-93. In 2009-10 USC led the charge by winning both the NCAA men’s and women’s water polo titles while Stanford took the NCAA men’s volleyball crown with Oregon’s women’s indoor track and field team winning its first-ever NCAA Championship team title. UCLA won three MPSF titles including men’s and women’s water polo, as well as men’s indoor track and field. In addition to its men’s volleyball title, Stanford won its sixth consecutive women’s lacrosse championship. Oregon also took the women’s indoor track and field crown while Oklahoma won its 10th MPSF men’s gymnastics championship in 12 years. Sacramento State grabbed it’s first-ever MPSF men’s soccer title while UC Davis nabbed its second women’s gymnastics title in three seasons.

THE UNIVERSITY
UNLV CAMPUS FACTS
C
ombining the excitement of an urban location with the charm of a traditional campus, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas offers students a full educational and social experience. Just decades old, UNLV has maintained a healthy rate of growth in enrollment, programs and scholastic excellence as part of the eight-component Nevada System of Higher Education. Located in the heart of one of the world’s most vibrant and dynamic cities, UNLV has matured along with the Las Vegas area. With enrollment more than doubling the last decade, the tremendous growth has meant a flurry of construction resulting in a campus setting boasting academic and athletic facilities second to none. Steadily becoming a traditional residential university, UNLV provides on-campus housing for more than 2,000 students. A variety of student clubs and organizations along with 26 Greek organizations supplement the social development of students. From within its 15 schools and colleges, including the new William S. Boyd School of Law, UNLV is also becoming a leading research institution of the West. The school’s scientific, social science, and business programs attract millions of dollars in research grants annually to fund projects in desert biology, nuclear waste transportation, laser physics, public opinion surveys and many others. In addition to traditional student programs, UNLV serves diverse local, national and international communities through its Educational Outreach Division, offering Summer Term, Continuing Education and Distance Education programs enrolling more than 53,000 students annually. With its Performing Arts Center, the campus is the cultural hub of Southern Nevada. World-class orchestras and soloists, dance and theater arts combine to provide a broad selection of concerts and stage productions. The Barrick Lecture Series and several campus organizations bring noted speakers to the University, and local and visiting artists show their works in the Donna Beam Fine Art Gallery. UNLV has excellent athletic facilities as well, many open for student and public use. Opened in 1957 as the southern regional division of the University of Nevada with a total of 28 students, UNLV now is home to more than 29,000 students coming from every county in Nevada, all 50 U.S. states and 88 countries. Much of UNLV’s tremendous expansion is the result of support from the Nevada Legislature and

the state’s taxpayers. Private donors have played an important role as well. These gifts support new facilities and programs and, most important, provide the scholarship incentives that bring Nevada’s best and brightest student scholars to campus. UNLV operates an on-campus Center for Business and Economic Research, Center for Economic Education, Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies (in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency), Desert Biology Research Center, Center for Survey Research, Nuclear Waste Transportation Research Center and other research and public-service centers. Offering 108 undergraduate programs and 138 graduate tracts, UNLV graduated a class of more than 5,000 last year. The University operates on a semester system and is a member of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the Council of Graduate Schools, the American Council of Education and the Western College Association. All of the University’s academic programs are fully accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, and many programs have received further accreditation from independent national accreditation bodies.

ATHLETICS DIRECTOR
ATHLETICS DIRECTOR JIM LIVENGOOD
B
ringing with him a wealth of experience and the reputation as one of the nation’s top administrators, Jim Livengood was introduced as UNLV’s 11th full-time Director of Athletics on Dec. 17, 2009. Livengood wasted no time getting to work, as less than two weeks later he hired Bobby Hauck as the 10th head coach in Rebel football history. Just three months after that it was announced that a new, state-of-the-art basketball practice facility, the Mendenhall Center, would be built, with construction starting later in the year. Livengood came to UNLV following a successful tenure of more than 15 years at the University of Arizona where he oversaw an athletics program that annually competed for championships not only in the Pac-10 Conference but also at a national level, maintained a high academic standard for its student-athletes and continually operated its $43 million budget in the black. His fiscal leadership helped Arizona remain one of the lone black-ink athletics programs among a small handful of institutions that rely exclusively on generated funds and do not receive state-appropriated monies. During his time in Tucson, he served as the Pacific-10 Conference president, chair of the Pac-10 Athletic Directors Revenue Sharing Committee and a member of the conference's Bowl Committee and Basketball Tournament Subcommittee. He also was a member of the Rose Bowl Management Committee, the NCAA Fellows program, NACDA President, and chair of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee, on which he served five years. His work at Arizona and its extension on the national level earned him an Athletic Director of the Year Award from the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics in 2006 for Division I-A.

Livengood initiated Campaign Arizona, which raised more than $130 million for athletic facility improvements and endowments while the Wildcats maintained a top-25 competitive record in the NACDA Directors' Cup (formerly Sears Cup), including high rankings of sixth in 1993-94, fourth in 1994-95, seventh in 1995-96, sixth in both 1996-97 and 1997-98 and ninth in 2001-02. That record reflects success throughout Arizona's broad-based program, highlighted by participation in the 1994 and 2001 NCAA Men's Final Four and champions of the 1997 NCAA Men's National Basketball Tournament. Arizona also won the 1994, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2006 and 2007 NCAA Women's Softball College World Series titles, the 1996 and 2000 NCAA Women's Golf titles and the 2008 men's and women's NCAA Swimming Championships. UA's student-athlete graduation rate continued to be historically higher than that of the general student body rate during his tenure at UA. Nearly 100 student-athletes earned conference or regional all-academic honors, and 20 percent of UA student-athletes attained honors-level cumulative grade point averages. Livengood is a member of the NCAA Fellows Program to mentor new athletic directors, has served as a member of the NCAA Peer Review Team from 1994-99, the NCAA Gender Equity Task Force, and the Women's Committee on Athletics. He has been a member of the NACDA Preseason Football Games Committee since 2000 and was a member of the NACDA Strategic Planning Committee from 1999-2001. He served as NACDA president in 1998-1999, and in 1999 was named Division I-A Athletic Director of the Year. He is also a member of the Division 1-A Athletic Directors Association, having served as president of that association in 1998. Livengood spent six years as the Athletics Director at Washington State University from 198893 where he developed what is still widely regarded as a model gender-equity program. In addition he laid the groundwork for a student-athlete wellness center that is regarded as one of the finest in the nation. Livengood began his administrative career in 1980 as the Associate Director for Development and Public Relations at Washington State before becoming the Athletics Director at

Six different Rebel sports will be represented during ceremonies, as the seven-person, two-team class will be inducted into the UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame as the Class of 2010 on Oct. 1. Five former Rebel standout players, one head coach and a distinguished contributor will join two record-setting teams in being inducted. Born in 1987, UNLV’s Athletics Hall of Fame will now grow to 105 members strong. Under the hall’s bylaws, former student-athletes must have completed their eligibility at least 10 years earlier to be selected. Coaches and administrators must have stopped working at the University five years previous. All classes now enter on a biennial basis. JEREMY ANDERSON (1996-2000) was prolific performer on the golf course and in the classroom and is the only athlete in school history to be a three-time All-American and three-time academic AllAmerican. A member of head coach Dwaine Knight’s 1998 National Championship squad, Anderson had the unusual honor of being voted player of the year in two different conferences (1999 Western Athletic and 2000 Mountain West). A first team All-American in 1999 and 2000, he was also a second team choice in 1998 as he posted three finishes in the top 30 at NCAA Championships. DANIEL BARBER (1989-92) is one of only two All-Americans in Rebel soccer history, as he was a Freshman All-American in 1989 and then a third team selection two seasons later. UNLV’s all-time assists leader with 26, Barber was first team all-conference and all-region in 1991 and first team all-league again in ‘92. JULIE CRANDALL (1995-98) is regarded as the best catcher in UNLV’s storied softball history and is one of five Rebels to be a multipleseason All-American as she was voted third team in both 1995 and ‘98. A three-time first team all-conference honoree, Crandall started behind the plate as a freshman for the best team in school history, helping the 1995 Rebels to a tie for third place at the Women’s College World Series. NICK GARRITANO (1991-94) was arguably the nation’s top place-kicker as a senior and he left as UNLV’s second-leading scorer in history with 240 points (four points behind running back Mike Thomas). Leading the Rebels in scoring three of his four seasons, Garritano was a 1994 semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award after leading all of college football in 50-yard field goals made, nailing five of seven attempts from 50-59 yards. RYAN LUDWICK (1997-99) played three seasons at UNLV before becoming the fourth-highest draft pick in program history (60th overall in 1999). The Durango High School product finished his college career ranked CLASSIFICATION Athlete/Men’s Golf Athlete/Basketball Distinguished Contributor Staff Athlete/Basketball Administration Athlete/Basketball Athlete/Men’s Soccer Administration/Coach Distinguished Contributor Distinguished Contributor Athlete/Tennis Distinguished Contributor Distinguished Contributor Athlete/Basketball Athlete/Golf Athlete/Football Distinguished Contributor Distinguished Contributor Athlete/Soccer Athlete/Softball Athlete/Football Coach/Baseball Administration/Coach Coach/Men’s Tennis Athlete/Swimming Athlete/Basketball Athlete/Baseball Athlete/Football Athlete/Basketball Athlete/Basketball Athlete/Basketball Athlete/Softball Athlete/Football Athlete/Football Distinguished Contributor

ninth in batting average (.363) and still ranks fourth at the school with 43 homeruns. The 1997 First Team Freshman All-American was a two-time preseason All-American and postseason all-conference honoree. The 1994 UNLV FOOTBALL TEAM is one of two in school history to win a conference championship and head coach Jeff Horton’s squad did it in style with a stunning 32-27 upset of arch-rival Nevada, Reno at Sam Boyd Stadium. The Rebels, who at 5-1 shared the league title with UNR and Louisiana-Lafayette, earned the Big West’s lone postseason bid via tie-breaker and went on to rout Central Michigan 52-24 in Las Vegas Bowl III to finish with an overall record of 7-5 and post the program’s most wins in 10 years. The 1985 UNLV MEN’S SOCCER TEAM was the winningest group in program history, seting multiple school records, including most wins and fewest losses as head coach Barry Barto’s squad finished 18-2-2. The Rebels, who also reeled off a record 18-game unbeaten streak during the campaign, finished the season ranked fourth in the nation by Soccer America after rising as high as second that fall. HEAD COACH DR. LARRY EASLEY (Deceased) (1992-03) coached the UNLV men’s tennis team longer than anyone in history, was named conference coach of the year three times and was also twice named Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Coach of the Year in 1998 and 2001. His all-time record of 141-120 included leading UNLV to three Big West Conference championships. Easley produced four of UNLV’s five all-time men’s All-Americans, including two individual national champions when Luke Smith won the NCAA singles championship and then teamed with Tim Blenkiron to capture the NCAA doubles title in 1997. DISTINGUISHED CONTRIBUTOR BOB MENDENHALL is the owner and chief executive officer of the Las Vegas Paving Corporation. A longtime supporter of the UNLV program, Mendenhall most recently became a major part of a group that is building and donating a new multi-million dollar practice facility for the Runnin’ Rebels.
