LAS VEGAS LIVING
C OX PAVILION
The UNLV volleyball team received a new home in 2001 in the $16.8 million Cox Pavilion. The pavilion is a 78,300 square-foot, multi-purpose, state-ofthe-art venue connected to the Thomas & Mack Center on the UNLV campus. Cox Communications and the Thomas & Mack Center formed a partnership that brought the new facility to UNLV and the Las Vegas Community. As part of a $5 million agreement, Cox Communications secured the naming rights for the facility as well as opportunities for sponsorship and hospitality. Former UNLV President Dr. Carol Harter stated when it opened, “We are pleased that Cox, a relatively new member of the Southern Nevada corporate community, has chosen to take an active role in supporting both academics and athletics at UNLV. The new Cox Pavilion, like Cox’s donation of television equipment and their annual support for a new cable television education channel, will benefit the community in many ways.” The pavilion is a two-level structure. The ground floor features men’s and women’s locker facilities, player lounges and practice courts for basketball and volleyball. The top level is a multi-purpose venue with a seating capacity for 2,800 and features padded, retractable seating throughout. “The Cox Pavilion features the best volleyball venue in the country and our athletes love to play in the bright arena with the home crowd support,” said Allison Keeley, UNLV’s volleyball head coach. “The size creates an intimate viewing venue where our fans feel like they are part of the match. We appreciate the effort on the behalf of UNLV to showcase our team in such a spectacular setting.”

UNLV volleyball had three student-athletes named to the 2009 Academic All-Mountain West Conference Team. The three honorees marked the 10th straight season that at least three UNLV volleyball student-athletes appeared on the academic team. In fact, academic advising has helped produce 70 such honorees since UNLV joined the MWC in 1999. Jessica Walters and Kelsey Keeler earned the designation of MWC Scholar-Athlete for the 2009-10 academic year. Walters, a four-time recipient, graduated from UNLV in 2010 with her undergraduate degree in journalism. Keeler, a nursing major, has been named an MWC Scholar-Athlete three times. Overall, 24 Rebel student-athletes have achieved this status dating back to the 2002-03 academic year. Also, Keeler earned Dean’s List honors for both semesters during the 2009-10 academic year, while Walters achieved the feat in the fall.
Walters was previously named UNLV’s Most Outstanding Female Athlete the previous two academic years, while owning the highest cumulative GPA among all female student-athletes. Besides conference and school recognition, the program has achieved national awards, as well. The team was one of 70 NCAA Division I programs to earn the 2007-08 AVCA Team Academic Award for amassing a 3.30 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale. Individually, Walters was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Eight First Teams in 2007 and ‘08, while Greenwood was tabbed to the third team in 2008. UNLV maintains an academic support system for its student-athletes that is designed to ensure success on and off the fields of play. Academic advisors work with the 17 men’s and women’s sports ensuring student-athletes received personalized care regarding their progress in education.

SPORTS MEDICINE

Day-to-day preventative medicine on the campus is made easy with the Marilyn and Si Redd Sports Medicine Complex. The state-of-the-art operation is a major part of the $8.5 million Lied Athletic facility. Made possible by a generous gift of $1.5 million by Marilyn and Si Redd, the athletic training facility incorporates the total scope of sports medicine over and 8,500-square-foot area. Aside from five staff offices, a rehabilitation room houses a dozen pieces of equipment including Cybex stationary bicycles, stair machines and treadmills, all under a natural skylight. The largest area features a dozen tables to offer student-athletes various treatments throughout the day. Taping, padding and bracing all take place in another all-inclusive room. Finally, an aquatic therapy room features three above-ground whirlpools surrounding a 10-feet deep pool for rehabilitative exercises. All of these features make it possible for UNLV student-athletes to rehabilitate injuries without ever needing to leave the Lied Athletic Complex. Other amenities include a physician’s office and exam room to provide daily medical service for student-athletes. A drug-testing facility also is part of the new complex. This expedites medical care because the student-athletes health care is self-contained. Also, UNLV’s academic program and its student athletic trainers benefit from a sports medicine library, study room and conference facility. “This is one of the top complexes in the nation because of the versatility it offers to service student-athletes in every area of sports medicine,” says Kyle Wilson, UNLV’s Director of Athletic Training. “We’re now more efficient, more accessible and more effective in preventing and rehabilitating athletic injuries.”

MEET THE REBELS
The 2010 UNLV Rebels

12
2 010 OUTLOOK
The 2010 UNLV Volleyball team will have a much different appearance than it has had in previous seasons. This year’s squad will feature six returning letterwinners, nine newcomers and two new assistant coaches. The new-look Rebels plan to restore the winning ways popularized by head coach Allison Keeley, since her arrival in 2004. The Rebels had a successful run of winning at least 15 matches for five straight years prior to last year's eight-win output. In the 13 years prior to Allison Keeley's arrival, the program had only witnessed two seasons of reaching the 15-win plateau. The 2010 edition will be comprised of four seniors, one junior, three sophomores and eight freshmen. The four seniors (Kelsey Keeler, Kela Lau Hee, Jeralynn Makaiwi and Sara Nehf) know what it takes to be winners, as they are the final holdovers from the record-setting 2007 campaign that produced a 24-6 mark en route to the program's first conference championship and trip to the NCAA tournament. The quartet will be counted on to provide senior leadership and experience with such a young roster. Junior Amanda Alles and sophomore Nile Te'o round out the six letterwinners from 2009's campaign. “The core of our team is the returning starters, who had a fantastic spring,” said Keeley. “Based on their strengths, our plan is to serve tough, play great defense and be dynamic on the pins. These parts of our game will make for very exciting volleyball. We possess great talent and a ton of upside in our setter and middle position. The key to this aspect of the team will be to develop quickly through the preseason competition.” In all, this year's squad returns only 40% of last season's production in both kills and assists and 36% of the team's blocks. Fortunately, 70% of the digs manufactured in '09 come back with the four seniors and sophomore Nile Te'o owning five of the six 100-plus dig tallies last year. Joining the Rebel roster for 2010 is a sophomore transfer named Kendra Glendenning. The freshmen are: Sekola Falemaka, Mariana Furquim, Makenzie Moea'I, Stephanie Thelen, Candice Thomas, Madeline Westman, Layne Wilson and Katlin Winters.
OUTSIDE HITTERS The 2010 Rebels will have their most depth at the net. The team will have eight to 10 options depending on the lineup. Outside: Keeler, Nehf, Falemaka, Furquim, Moea'i will line up as outside hitters, while Alles and Thelen may see
some time attacking when not setting. Keeler has played in a total of 183 sets and 63 matches as a Rebel. She has tallied 339 kills, 202 digs, 72 total blocks, 46 assists and 19 aces. Last season, she saw action in 27 matches and 95 sets. She ranked third on the team in kills (224) and kills per set (2.36). She was fourth in digs (154) and digs per set (1.62). Nehf has played in a total of 210 sets and 71 career matches. She has contributed 486 kills, 286 digs, 65 total blocks, 20 assists and 14 aces. Last season, she played in 27 matches and 96 sets. She finished second on the team in kills (255) and kills per set (2.66). She was third in digs (161) and digs per set (1.68). “Sara and Kelsey look to be two of the better attackers in the conference this season. Sekola (Falemaka) and Makenzie (Moeai’i) are skilled allaround players. They play aggressively and will be able to make a difference immediately.”
MIDDLE BLOCKERS The middle will be comprised of three of the freshmen: Thomas, Westman and Winters. “Madeline (Westman) and Candice (Thomas) will need to be consistent and step up early in the season.”
SETTERS After two years of sharing the setting duties, Alles should get the majority of the opportunities to assist her hitters. Joining her will also be Glendenning and Thelen. Alles has participated in 87 sets and 35 matches. She has posted 410 assists, 72 digs, 17 total blocks, 13 kills and eight aces. Last season, she played in 23 matches and 63 sets. She finished second in assists (345) and assists per set (5.48).
“Amanda's strength is her consistency and her blocking. When we use a 6/2 system, Kendra's defense will make a difference.”
LIBERO & DEFENSIVE SPECIALISTS The back row will be the most experienced for the Rebels with the return of Lau Hee, Makaiwi and Te'o. Wilson rounds out the quartet of libero/defensive specialist players. Lau Hee has participated in 204 sets and 66 matches. She has chipped in 465 digs, 30 assists, 24 aces and one kills. HE AD C O A CH ALLISON KEELEY Head Coach Seventh Season
Allison Keeley enters her seventh season at UNLV as the winningest head coach in program history with an overall record of 98-76. After six years on the job, Keeley has the UNLV volleyball program on the right track. She has won at least 15 or more matches in five of her six seasons and amassed back-to-back tallies of 20+ wins during the 2006 and ‘07 campaigns. Keeley took a UNLV program that had five consecutive losing seasons prior to her arrival into the top 25. In those five years pre-Keeley, UNLV held a combined record of 52-88. In the six years since, the Rebels have won 98 matches. She led UNLV to three straight semifinal appearances in the Mountain West Conference Tournament before achieving what no other coach in the program’s history had accomplished. In 2007, she surpassed the semifinal threshold and won the 2007 MWC Championship earning an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament, a first for UNLV. Overall, she has produced one AVCA All-America Honorable Mention player (Lauren Miramontes), one AVCA West Region First Team member (Miramontes), one AVCA West Region Honorable Mention (Camille Cunningham), 13 all-conference honorees and two conference freshmen of the year (Maria Aladjova and Cursty Jackson). Hampered by injuries to key players the Rebels had a rough go at it in 2009. The squad went 8-19 and finished seventh in the MWC. Jackson earned all-conference honors and pushed the program’s streak to seven straight years of a Rebel making the list. In 2008, Keeley led the team to a 16-14 overall mark, while tying for fourth in the Mountain West Conference with a 9-7 record. The year included a home win over then-#13 Colorado State and sweeping the regular-season contests with BYU for the first time in program history. The season ended with Cunningham being named to the AVCA All-West Region squad, as well as earning all-conference honors. Melody Nua and Jackson rounded out the All-MWC recipients.
fourth for the third straight year with a 10-6 record. In 2005, Keeley’s squad closed out the season with a 15-15 overall record, while finishing 10-6 in the MWC (fourth place), but came within one point of playing in the program’s first-ever MWC Championship. In 2004, Keeley revitalized a program that between 1978 and 2003 had only four winning seasons in 14 years of play (no team was fielded from 1981-83 and 1986-95). The squad finished the ‘04 season with a 15-12 record and the program’s highest finish in MWC play (fourth) with an 8-6 mark. Besides coaching success on the court, her players have also excelled in the classroom. Thus far, Keeley has produced 45 Academic All-Mountain West Conference selections, which included tying the program-high of 10 honorees in 2005 and ‘08. Jessica Walters has been named UNLV’s Most Outstanding Female Athlete for two academic years and earned ESPN The Magazine AllDistrict First Team honors, while fellow teammate Erin Greenwood was tabbed to the all-district third team. Prior to coming to UNLV, Keeley was the head coach at Villanova University from 2001-03. She helped rejuvenate the Wildcat program and left Philadelphia with a 39-48 overall record. She helped move the Wildcats from the bottom of the Big East into a position of playing in the semifinals of the conference tournament. Her finest season in Philadelphia came in 2002 when the Wildcats went 18-16 and improved 11 matches over the previous year’s record. Before her three years at Villanova, she was the head coach for three years at Southern Arkansas University, a NCAA Division II school. In her first year at SAU, the team finished third in the Gulf South Conference. From 1996-98, she was the head coach at Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., and her teams qualified for postseason play twice in three years. She began her coaching career at Sparks High School in Sparks, Nev.
Keeley graduated in 1990 from Carleton College with an undergraduate degree. The Rebels had a magical run in 2007, which saw them notch a program-best in political science while also earning all-conference honors as a setter on the 24 victories to only six defeats. The squad was recognized in the national rank- volleyball team. 2 009 REVIEW
J A CK SON E ARNS ALL-MWC UNLV sophomore middle blocker Cursty Jackson was named to the Mountain West's All-Conference Team following a vote by the league's nine head coaches. This was Jackson's first time being named to the All-MWC squad after taking home freshman of the year honors in 2008. Jackson, who was named the MWC's Player of the Week on Sept. 28, played in all 16 league matches and 58 sets. In conference-only statistics, she ranked second in points per set (4.21), third kills per set (3.43) and 10th in blocks per set (1.03). Overall, Jackson placed third in points per set (4.10) and fourth in kills per set (3.39),
WE PLAYED THEM In all, UNLV played three ranked teams in 2009 and went 0-3 in those contests. The Rebels played Florida (then-#8) and UCLA (then-#9) within the first three matches of the year before concluding Mountain West action with a 3-2 loss to Colorado State (then-#25). The team also played seven squads that made the 2009 NCAA Tournament. UNLV owned a 2-8 record in 10 overall meetings. The Rebels played three MWC teams thrice, while facing four others once apiece. UNLV went 1-1 against both New Mexico and TCU and 0-2 vs. Colorado State. The other losses were to Florida, UCLA, Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara. Those seven NCAA participants combined for a 67 record. Florida and Colorado State fared the best as each went 2-1 and reached the Regional Semifinals. UCLA and TCU both notched wins and went 1-1. Long Beach State, New Mexico and UC Santa Barbara lost their opening matches.
NATIONALLY SPE AKING The Rebels, as a team, ranked in the top half of two NCAA per-set statistical categories, with a #72 placing in blocks (2.26) and #146 in kills (12.68). They finished just behind the half-way point in hit-
ting percentage (#177: .193) and digs (#182: 14.25). Individually, Erin Greenwood and Cursty Jackson ranked highly amongst the top 250 players in four categories. Greenwood placed 62nd in hitting percentage with her .342 average. Jackson, on the other hand, finished 116th in points per set (4.06), 140th in blocks per set (1.02) and 153rd in kills per set (3.35).
C ONFERENCE SPE AKING The Rebels finished highly in digs and assists, as they placed third and fourth, respectively, in the nine-member league. The defense, led by libero Kela Lau Hee, averaged 14.25 digs per set to place third behind TCU (16.33) and Colorado State (14.61). Samantha Richard and Amanda Alles ran the offense and helped the team to a fourth place showing in assists with an average of 11.95 per set. TCU, also, led the category with a 12.37 per-set tally. Individually, the Rebels had six players rank within the top 10 in five statistical categories. Cursty Jackson placed twice, as she ranked third in points per set (4.06) and fourth in kills per set (3.35). Erin Greenwood ranked third with a .342 hitting efficiency. Sara Nehf joined Jackson in the kills perset category by placing 10th with a 2.66 average. Samantha Richard (6.98) and Amanda Alles (5.48) finished eighth and ninth, respectively, in assists per set.
RARE ROOFING MATERIALS In the history of the UNLV volleyball program only two players have etched their names in the top five of all three career blocking categories, Lauren Miramontes (2003-07) and Erin Greenwood (2006-09). Miramontes, a 2007 AVCA Honorable Mention All-America and three-time All-MWC performer, ranks first in all three categories with 426 total, 80 solos and 344 assisted blocks. Greenwood climbed the charts with each block she
amassed last season. She finished her career third in total blocks (353), fourth in assisted blocks (294) and fifth in solo blocks (59).
MO VING ON UP Besides ranking highly in UNLV’s career blocking categories, Erin Greenwood slowly climbed up five other all-time charts. She ranked highly in matches played, sets played, kills, total attempts and hitting efficiency. Greenwood played in every match that she suited up for since her freshman year of 2006. Her 117 matches played ranks second in school history. She sits behind her former teammate Melody Nua, who played in 120 contests during her four-year career. She finished fourth in sets played with 415. Nua tops this category, as well, with 442 sets played. Offensively, she finished her career ranked third in hitting efficiency (.289), fifth in kills (918) and seventh in total attempts (2,277).
RE C ORD RANKINGS Four other Rebels joined Greenwood in the UNLV career record books with help from their play last season. Cursty Jackson placed in two categories, while Jessica Walters, Samantha Richard, Amanda Alles and Samantha Noland wrote their names once. Jackson has quickly climbed up the career charts after only two years of action. She ranks seventh in hitting efficiency (.252) and solo blocks (35). Alles has amassed 410 assists in only two years of play to rank ninth. Walters, Richard and Noland closed out their careers in 2009. Walters had the 10th most attempts (1,886) all time, while Richard finished sixth in assists (644) and Noland tied Jackson for seventh in solo blocks (35).

UNLV MEDIA RELATIONS JEFFREY SE ALS ASS T . MEDIA RELATIONS DIRE C TOR
MEDIA REQUES TS
UNLVREBELS. C OM
All requests for working press, radio, television or photo credentials should be directed to the UNLV Media Relations Department via letter or e-mail at least 24 hours prior to the match. Proof of coverage may be required. Requests can be made by calling, e-mailing or faxing.
Enjoying a complete redesign last year, the official UNLV athletics website www.UNLVRebels.com has steadily expanded in both contents and usership since its premiere in 1997. As one of the hundreds of official athletic sites that make up the CBS College Sports Network, the Rebels’ home on the internet features in-depth, updated information 24 hours a day. The official UNLV athletic website features photo layout on the front page. In addition, the site takes advantage of a number of CBSCollegeSports.com online features, including its exclusive GameTracker technology, allowing Rebel fans to follow live simulated game action, details and full play-by-play. Through the site, CBS C also operates the Rebels’ online store, which provides officially licensed merchandise and apparel. Also, UNLVRebels.com is your home for UNLV All-Access, which is a popular online service that features the most indepth coverage of Rebel sports through exclusive audio and video content, including live games streamed via broadband, special features, highlights, press conferences and coaches’ shows.
Space at the Cox Pavilion Press Row for working media is limited and will be at the discretion of volleyball contact Jeffrey Seals. Only credentialed media members will gain entrance. Credentials will not be mailed - they may be picked up at the UNLV Media Relations Department (located in Room 74 of the Thomas & Mack Center on campus).
WEEKLY RELE ASES & RE CAPS UNLV makes its athletics-related media releases available exclusively on the internet website, www.UNLVRebels.com. The weekly release will be prepared each week and will be posted on the school’s official website prior to that week’s events in Adobe PDF format. However, the release is also available through electronic mail. Game recaps will be posted online following each contest. Any members of the media interested in having the weekly release and/or game recaps e-mailed to them should request to be added to the general list by e-mailing volleyball contact Jeffrey Seals at jeff.seals@unlv.edu.

MOUNTAIN WES T C ONFERENCE
BIRTH OF A C ONFERENCE The Mountain West Conference was conceived on May 26, 1998, when the presidents of eight institutions -- Air Force, Brigham Young, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming -- decided to form a new NCAA FBS intercollegiate athletic conference. The split from the former 16-team WAC re-established continuity and stability among the membership within the new league and signaled the continuation of its traditionrich, long-standing athletic rivalries. Five of the MWC’s eight members have been conference rivals since the 1960s (BYU, Utah, New Mexico, Wyoming and Colorado State), while San Diego State (1978) and Air Force (1980) were longtime members as well. UNLV and TCU entered the fold in 1996 and the Rebels continued as one of the original eight institutions that formed the MWC in 1999. TCU rejoined the group with its first year of competition in the Mountain West in 2005-06. On June 17, 2001, Commissioner Craig Thompson announced the addition of Boise State University to the MWC, effective July 1, 2011. From its inception in 1999, the Mountain West Conference has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics, while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. The Colorado Springs-based league is noted for its geographic diversity. Some of the most beautiful terrain and landscapes in the nation can be found within the Mountain West boundaries, including the majestic Rocky Mountain range, which borders four MWC schools (Utah, BYU, Air Force and Colorado State). The high plains of Wyoming (elevation 7,220 feet - the highest Division I campus in the nation) contrast with the desert city of Las Vegas (the fastest growing metropolitan area in the West) and the Pacific locale of San Diego State. The southwestern flavor of New Mexico complements the western heritage and culture of Fort Worth, Texas, home of TCU. MWC members have participated in 41 bowl games in 11 years, with eight of the nine schools earning at least one bid. The MWC has earned 50 postseason bids in men’s basketball, including 26 NCAA Tournament appearances and two NIT Final Four berths; while women’s basketball has tallied 51 postseason bids, inluding 29 NCAA bids, five Sweet 16 appearances and one Elite Eight berth since 2000. The MWC has sent at least 30 teams to NCAA postseason events each year while capturing three team and 24 individual championships in 11 years.

UNLV ON TELEVISION The Mountain West Conference television package reaches a national audience through a combination of telecasts on The MountainWest Sports Network (The Mtn.), CBS College Sports Network (formerly CSTV) and VERSUS. The Mtn. has been available to cable subscribers in the MWC footprint since it first aired in 2006-07 and is now available nationally on DIRECTV (channel 616). On Aug. 26, 2004, College Sports Television (CSTV) and the MWC announced a visionary partnership that revolutionized the college sports landscape. The landmark agreement was the first NCAA Division I football and men’s basketball conference-wide deal for CSTV and provided the network exclusive rights to all conference events, including cable and satellite television coverage, national over-the-air and satellite radio, video-on-demand and online broadcast rights. A succession of events since the fall of 2004 has improved the television model, including CSTV’s merger with Comcast SportsNet to create The Mtn. - MountainWest Sports Network and CBS Corporation’s purchase of CSTV. In 2008, CBS incorporated CSTV’s cable, broadcast and online activities into its world-famous brand. The Mtn. is co-owned by CBS C and Comcast SportsNet. The relationship with Comcast SportsNet also delivered another national broadcast partner in VERSUS. The MWC was the first exclusive college programming provider for the Comcast-owned entity, with football and both men’s and women’s basketball games. The CBS C/MWC partnership has guaranteed greater levels of television exposure for all league sports and has resoundingly met the fundamental goals of more exposure and preferred start times and dates. In the summer of 2006, the centerpiece of this historic relationship was realized with the launch of The Mtn. - the first sports network dedicated to serving a single collegiate athletic conference. The Mtn. provides sports fans blanket coverage of MWC athletics across multiple sports, including football, men’s and women’s basketball, and men’s and women’s Olympic sports. along with live games, fans get a comprehensive array of news, features and analysis about their favorite MWC teams and players. In 2009-10, more than 250 MWC events were shown live on The Mtn., CBS C and VERSUS. CBS C is currently available in over 38 million homes, while VERSUS is in more than 79 million households.

CRAIG THOMPSON MWC Commissioner
Craig Thompson was the Mountain West Conference’s first employee when he was named commissioner on Oct. 15, 1998. Ever since, Thompson has navigated the newest NCAA Division I conference through the ever-changing landscape of intercollegiate athletics. As the league enters its 12th season of competition in 2010-11, Thompson continues to create and improve the opportunities for MWC institutions and student-athletes to be successful both academically and athletically. Since the Mountain West Conference opened its doors on January 4, 1999, Thompson has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics, while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. Progressive in its approach, the MWC has flourished under the guidance of Commissioner Thompson and continutes to cultivate opportunities for student-athletes to compete at the highest level, while fostering academic achievement and sportsmanship. He has been instrumental in negotiating nearly $230 million in television revenue and has been an innovator in the postseason bowl structure as MWC teams have participated in five inaugural bowl games. His leadership and vision have helped the conference enhance its television revenue and exposure through revolutionary agreements with CBS College Sports Network and Comcast to become the first collegiate athletic conference to launch a dedicated sports channel featuring exclusive programming around its nine athletic programs. Thompson has been instrumental in strengthening the position of the MWC in its current Bowl Championship Series (BCS) structure. In 2006, he spearheaded an effort that resulted in better access for the MWC and more than doubled the annual BCS revenue on an annual basis for non-automatic-qualifying conferences. The MWC has been steadfast in its efforts to find a way to make the BCS system fair to all universities. Through its first 11 years of competition, the MWC has participated in 41 bowl games. For the third time in six years, the MWC posted the best win percentage among the 11 FBS conferences in 2009-10. The Mountain West claimed the 2009-10 Bowl Challenge Cup after sending five teams into postseason action and finishing with a 4-1 (.800) mark. Prior to his current role, Thompson served as the commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference for nearly eight years and as the only commissioner of the American South Conference prior to the merger of the two leagues in 1991. Thompson graduated from the University of Minnesota with an undergraduate degree in journalism. He and his wife, Carla, have a son (Ted) and a daughter (Emma).

UNLV CAMPUS FACTS
C
ombining the excitement of an urban location with the charm of a traditional campus, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas offers students a full educational and social experience. Just decades old, UNLV has maintained a healthy rate of growth in enrollment, programs and scholastic excellence as part of the eight-component Nevada System of Higher Education. Located in the heart of one of the world’s most vibrant and dynamic cities, UNLV has matured along with the Las Vegas area. With enrollment more than doubling the last decade, the tremendous growth has meant a flurry of construction resulting in a campus setting boasting academic and athletic facilities second to none. Steadily becoming a traditional residential university, UNLV provides on-campus housing for more than 2,000 students. A variety of student clubs and organizations along with 26 Greek organizations supplement the social development of students. From within its 15 schools and colleges, including the new William S. Boyd School of Law, UNLV is also becoming a leading research institution of the West. The school’s scientific, social science, and business programs attract millions of dollars in research grants annually to fund projects in desert biology, nuclear waste transportation, laser physics, public opinion surveys and many others. In addition to traditional student programs, UNLV serves diverse local, national and international communities through its Educational Outreach Division, offering Summer Term, Continuing Education and Distance Education programs enrolling more than 53,000 students annually. With its Performing Arts Center, the campus is the cultural hub of Southern Nevada. World-class orchestras and soloists, dance and theater arts combine to provide a broad selection of concerts and stage productions. The Barrick Lecture Series and several campus organizations bring noted speakers to the University, and local and visiting artists show their works in the Donna Beam Fine Art Gallery. UNLV has excellent athletic facilities as well, many open for student and public use. Opened in 1957 as the southern regional division of the University of Nevada with a total of 28 students, UNLV now is home to more than 29,000 students coming from every county in Nevada, all 50 U.S. states and 88 countries. Much of UNLV’s tremendous expansion is the result of support from the Nevada Legislature and

ATHLETICS DIRECTOR
ATHLETICS DIRECTOR JIM LIVENGOOD
B
ringing with him a wealth of experience and the reputation as one of the nation’s top administrators, Jim Livengood was introduced as UNLV’s 11th full-time Director of Athletics on Dec. 17, 2009. Livengood wasted no time getting to work, as less than two weeks later he hired Bobby Hauck as the 10th head coach in Rebel football history. Just three months after that it was announced that a new, state-of-the-art basketball practice facility, the Mendenhall Center, would be built, with construction starting later in the year. Livengood came to UNLV following a successful tenure of more than 15 years at the University of Arizona where he oversaw an athletics program that annually competed for championships not only in the Pac-10 Conference but also at a national level, maintained a high academic standard for its student-athletes and continually operated its $43 million budget in the black. His fiscal leadership helped Arizona remain one of the lone black-ink athletics programs among a small handful of institutions that rely exclusively on generated funds and do not receive state-appropriated monies. During his time in Tucson, he served as the Pacific-10 Conference president, chair of the Pac-10 Athletic Directors Revenue Sharing Committee and a member of the conference's Bowl Committee and Basketball Tournament Subcommittee. He also was a member of the Rose Bowl Management Committee, the NCAA Fellows program, NACDA President, and chair of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee, on which he served five years. His work at Arizona and its extension on the national level earned him an Athletic Director of the Year Award from the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics in 2006 for Division I-A.
50
Livengood initiated Campaign Arizona, which raised more than $130 million for athletic facility improvements and endowments while the Wildcats maintained a top-25 competitive record in the NACDA Directors' Cup (formerly Sears Cup), including high rankings of sixth in 1993-94, fourth in 1994-95, seventh in 1995-96, sixth in both 1996-97 and 1997-98 and ninth in 2001-02. That record reflects success throughout Arizona's broad-based program, highlighted by participation in the 1994 and 2001 NCAA Men's Final Four and champions of the 1997 NCAA Men's National Basketball Tournament. Arizona also won the 1994, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2006 and 2007 NCAA Women's Softball College World Series titles, the 1996 and 2000 NCAA Women's Golf titles and the 2008 men's and women's NCAA Swimming Championships. UA's student-athlete graduation rate continued to be historically higher than that of the general student body rate during his tenure at UA. Nearly 100 student-athletes earned conference or regional all-academic honors, and 20 percent of UA student-athletes attained honors-level cumulative grade point averages. Livengood is a member of the NCAA Fellows Program to mentor new athletic directors, has served as a member of the NCAA Peer Review Team from 1994-99, the NCAA Gender Equity Task Force, and the Women's Committee on Athletics. He has been a member of the NACDA Preseason Football Games Committee since 2000 and was a member of the NACDA Strategic Planning Committee from 1999-2001. He served as NACDA president in 1998-1999, and in 1999 was named Division I-A Athletic Director of the Year. He is also a member of the Division 1-A Athletic Directors Association, having served as president of that association in 1998. Livengood spent six years as the Athletics Director at Washington State University from 198893 where he developed what is still widely regarded as a model gender-equity program. In addition he laid the groundwork for a student-athlete wellness center that is regarded as one of the finest in the nation. Livengood began his administrative career in 1980 as the Associate Director for Development and Public Relations at Washington State before becoming the Athletics Director at

Six different Rebel sports will be represented during ceremonies, as the seven-person, two-team class will be inducted into the UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame as the Class of 2010 on Oct. 1. Five former Rebel standout players, one head coach and a distinguished contributor will join two record-setting teams in being inducted. Born in 1987, UNLV’s Athletics Hall of Fame will now grow to 105 members strong. Under the hall’s bylaws, former student-athletes must have completed their eligibility at least 10 years earlier to be selected. Coaches and administrators must have stopped working at the University five years previous. All classes now enter on a biennial basis. JEREMY ANDERSON (1996-2000) was prolific performer on the golf course and in the classroom and is the only athlete in school history to be a three-time All-American and three-time academic AllAmerican. A member of head coach Dwaine Knight’s 1998 National Championship squad, Anderson had the unusual honor of being voted player of the year in two different conferences (1999 Western Athletic and 2000 Mountain West). A first team All-American in 1999 and 2000, he was also a second team choice in 1998 as he posted three finishes in the top 30 at NCAA Championships. DANIEL BARBER (1989-92) is one of only two All-Americans in Rebel soccer history, as he was a Freshman All-American in 1989 and then a third team selection two seasons later. UNLV’s all-time assists leader with 26, Barber was first team all-conference and all-region in 1991 and first team all-league again in ‘92. JULIE CRANDALL (1995-98) is regarded as the best catcher in UNLV’s storied softball history and is one of five Rebels to be a multipleseason All-American as she was voted third team in both 1995 and ‘98. A three-time first team all-conference honoree, Crandall started behind the plate as a freshman for the best team in school history, helping the 1995 Rebels to a tie for third place at the Women’s College World Series. NICK GARRITANO (1991-94) was arguably the nation’s top place-kicker as a senior and he left as UNLV’s second-leading scorer in history with 240 points (four points behind running back Mike Thomas). Leading the Rebels in scoring three of his four seasons, Garritano was a 1994 semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award after leading all of college football in 50-yard field goals made, nailing five of seven attempts from 50-59 yards. RYAN LUDWICK (1997-99) played three seasons at UNLV before becoming the fourth-highest draft pick in program history (60th overall in 1999). ninth in batting average (.363) and still ranks fourth at the school with 43 homeruns. The 1997 First Team Freshman All-American was a two-time preseason All-American and postseason all-conference honoree. The 1994 UNLV FOOTBALL TEAM is one of two in school history to win a conference championship and head coach Jeff Horton’s squad did it in style with a stunning 32-27 upset of arch-rival Nevada, Reno at Sam Boyd Stadium. The Rebels, who at 5-1 shared the league title with UNR and Louisiana-Lafayette, earned the Big West’s lone postseason bid via tie-breaker and went on to rout Central Michigan 52-24 in Las Vegas Bowl III to finish with an overall record of 7-5 and post the program’s most wins in 10 years. The 1985 UNLV MEN’S SOCCER TEAM was the winningest group in program history, seting multiple school records, including most wins and fewest losses as head coach Barry Barto’s squad finished 18-2-2. The Rebels, who also reeled off a record 18-game unbeaten streak during the campaign, finished the season ranked fourth in the nation by Soccer America after rising as high as second that fall. HEAD COACH DR. LARRY EASLEY (Deceased) (1992-03) coached the UNLV men’s tennis team longer than anyone in history, was named conference coach of the year three times and was also twice named Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Coach of the Year in 1998 and 2001. His all-time record of 141-120 included leading UNLV to three Big West Conference championships. Easley produced four of UNLV’s five all-time men’s All-Americans, including two individual national champions when Luke Smith won the NCAA singles championship and then teamed with Tim Blenkiron to capture the NCAA doubles title in 1997. DISTINGUISHED CONTRIBUTOR BOB MENDENHALL is the owner and chief executive officer of the Las Vegas Paving Corporation. A longtime supporter of the UNLV program, Mendenhall most recently became a major part of a group that is building and donating a new multi-million dollar practice facility for the Runnin’ Rebels.
