FACILITIES

PETER JOHANN MEMORIAL FIELD The dedication of Peter Johann Memorial Soccer Field during the 1983 season marked a special occasion for all those who were involved with the building of UNLV’s first on-campus soccer facility. Despite the fact that UNLV soccer has been around since 1974, Rebel teams in the past never truly had a “home field” to call their own. And, when former men’s soccer head coach Barry Barto assumed his position prior to the 1982 season, building an on-campus soccer field became a priority. Barto approached then-athletics director Brad Rothermel to work out a solution to the problem and the two settled on the current location, where the old softball field had previously existed. Once the site was finalized, a huge community effort was instrumental in the building of the soccer field. The field is named after the late son of Kenneth F. Johann, a real estate businessman who has lived in Las Vegas for more than 40 years. Johann has been a strong 4

supporter of Rebel soccer and he and his wife, Alice, set up a scholarship fund in memory of their son. Thus, Johann was more than happy to be a part of the overall community effort. Johann Field played host to the 1983 ISAA Senior Bowl All-Star Game where the West team posted a 4-0 victory. Numerous international matches have also been played on its pitch and it is also the site of the annual UNLV/Nike Soccer Classic for both the men’s and women’s squads. The facility has also played host to three Las Vegas Soccer Spectaculars. The inaugural contest in 2002 featured the WUSA’s San Jose CyberRays and the San Diego Spirit, while in the spring of 2003, the Boston Breakers took on San Jose. The final spectacular was in March of 2003, between UNLV and the Mexican Olympic Team, who had just claimed a spot in the 2004 Athens Games. In the spring of 2007, a sellout crowd watched the first-ever MLS contest on the UNLV campus, as Real 2010 UNLV WOMEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

PETER JOHANN MEMORIAL FIELD Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids played to a 0-0 draw in an exhibition contest on March 31. The women’s soccer team reached its 50th victory on its home field in the quarterfinals of the 2005 MWC Tournament and three days later won the tournament championship, the first-ever won by a UNLV squad at Johann Field, with a 1-0 overtime victory over New Mexico in the title game. The women’s team has hosted a total of four MWC championships at Johann Field, and made the championship game in two of the four tournaments (2001 and 2005). With the addition of endzone seats in 1997, the grandstands now offer seating for approximately 2,500 spectators in an open seating arrangement, and the facility boasts natural grass, a press box, and lights for night matches. The facility was most recently upgraded during the summer of 2006, as a $300,000 renovation led to a new irrigation system as well as new sod and grass for the field. Generally regarded as one of the top college soccer facilities in the West, Johann Field celebrates its 28th season in 2010.

The MWC Tournament has been held at UNLV in 2001, 2002, 2005 and 2008.

SPORTS MEDICINE

Providing the best possible preventative and rehabilitative care, the UNLV soccer athletic training staff is headed by Director of Athletic Training Kyle Wilson. The trainer for this year’s team is Mike Sepiol. Made possible by a generous gift of $1.5 million by Marilyn and Si Redd, the Lied Athletic complex’s athletic training facility incorporates the total scope of sports medicine over an 8,500-square-foot area. Aside from five staff offices, a rehabilitation room houses a dozen pieces of equipment including Cybex stationary bicycles, stair machines and treadmills, all under a natural skylight.

The largest area features a dozen tables to offer student-athletes various treatments throughout the day. Taping, padding and bracing all take place in another all-inclusive room. Finally, an aquatic therapy room features three above-ground whirlpools surrounding a 10-feet deep pool for rehabilitative exercises. All of these features make it possible for UNLV student-athletes to rehabilitate injuries without ever needing to leave the confines of the Lied Athletic Complex. Mike Sepiol Other amenities include a physician’s office Athletic Trainer and exam room to provide daily medical service for student-athletes. A drug-testing facility also is part of the complex. This expedites medical care because the student-athletes’ health care is self-contained. Also, UNLV’s academic program and its student athletic training benefit from a sports medicine library, study room and conference facility.

HEAD COACH JENNIFER KLEIN JENNIFER KLEIN

Head Coach First Year Arizona ‘06

JJennifer Klein is entering her first sseason as head women’s soccer coach at UNLV. Klein l i was promoted after serving the past three seasons as an assistant coach for the squad. “Having watched Jennifer compete as a studentathlete at the University of Arizona, it is not surprising that she has risen so fast in the coaching ranks,” said UNLV Athletics Director Jim Livengood, who was the AD at Arizona during Klein’s collegiate playing career. “She was an excellent assistant and will be an outstanding head coach.” In addition to serving on the Rebels’ staff, Klein has coached several local, state and Regional ODP teams. She coached for the Las Vegas Players Soccer Club assisting with the U10, U13 and U15 girls teams from fall 2007 to spring 2010. Over the last three years, Klein has been involved as a head coach for Nevada State ODP with 95 and 91 age groups. She currently is an assistant coach for the 94 girls Region IV team. Klein came to UNLV from Arizona, where she was a volunteer assistant coach upon the conclusion of a four-year career for the Wildcats in 2002-05. As an assistant during the 2006-07 season, Klein helped run team and individual trainings, as well as performed administrative duties for the squad. She also assisted in recruiting and team camps. Klein served as head coach for the 94 Arizona State ODP team, which won the 2007 Gothia Cup. During that same year she was also a coach for Arizona Rush Soccer Club. As a player for the Wildcats, she was a team captain her final two seasons while helping the squad to a NCAA sweet 16 appearance in 2005 and to its first Pac-10 Championship in 2004. Klein appeared in 78 games in her career, with 60 starts as a midfielder and outside back. Klein was also a member of the Arizona Heatwave in the semi-professional W-League from 2003-05. Klein received her bachelor of science degree in biology from Arizona in May of 2006 and is currently working toward her masters degree in athletic administration at UNLV.

2010 UNLV WOMEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

Q & A WITH JENN Q: What got you first involved in soccer? A: I think my parents got me involved in soccer just so I would have something to do, I was five years old, and I played on the Dragons (in Prescott, Ariz.). And from just there I’ve always enjoyed it, it was the sport I always played growing up and had a passion for, and I wanted to keep developing. I was always a midfielder, though I’ve played every position. In college, we had several injuries, so I even had to fill in as the backup goalkeeper. But midfielder was always my favorite position. Q: What is your top soccer highlight thus far, either as a player or coach? A: In college, making it to the Sweet 16. It was my senior year, we played Portland at their place, and to go from where we were as freshmen, last place in the Pac-10, to making it to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA. Even though we lost it was on the home field of the eventual champions, and I’ll always remember that. Q: What are your goals for UNLV for the upcoming season and during the next five years? A: I think my goal is to get us to back to the conference tournament, I think we’re a team that should be there every year. The other goal is to get us back to the NCAAs, I think its a good program, we’ve had great players come through here. The players work hard, and we should be able to acheive those goals.

Q: What challenges will you have to overcome, both in being a head coach for the first time, and in getting the team back to the NCAA Tournament after two years away? A: It’s my first year, so the challenge will be almost everything. No matter how long you’ve been a head coach, there will be challenges. One advantage I think I have is that I’ve been an assistant for the past three years, so I know our current players, I know who we’ve got coming in. As for the NCAA goal, it will be a challenge in that we won several MWC championships in the past, and then went two years where our success was lower than we wanted. We’re going to have to push even harder to get back to that level, and then do our best to maintain that standard. One advantage, though, for this year could be that we will be a very young team, so they could come in not knowing any better and will not have any lowered expectations. Q: What style will the Rebels be playing under you? A: I’m a possession-orientated coach, I believe as long as you have the ball you control the flow of the game. We’re also going to be an organized and disclipined team, but once we get to the final third, we’ll do whatever we can to get the ball in the back of the net. We’re going to be a team that when you watch, you will realize that our players enjoy playing and are having fun as well.

And, I want our players to continue to come in here and grow as soccer players, but to also walk out of here proud of where they played and proud of their accomplishments, both on and off the field. I enjoyed tremendously where I went to school, it was probably the best four years of my life, and I want all my players to have the same feeling. Q: What else is needed or necessary to turn UNLV into a consistent top-25 program? A: I think consistency in the work among the classes, everyone coming in and putting their hard work in and doing their all to be successful. It will need to be a complete team effort, both from the players and the coaches. Q: With youth soccer being big in the local community, do you see that as an advantage in helping to build more support for the team? A: I do, I think there is a lot of buzz in the community for UNLV, and specifically for UNLV women’s soccer. Having been involved on the youth side the last three years, people want to see us succeed, and they want to support and be a part of it. It was great for me to be involved, and now they feel they have a connection to our program through me and my two assistants who are also involved locally with teams. That’s something I encourage my assistants to do so because I think it’s good for them to get the chance to do more coaching, but also so that the community has interaction with our coaches and players, and that can help bring them out to support our team during the season.

2010 SEASON OUTLOOK Rebels look to rebound from a dissapointing 2009 season

For the first time since 2005, the Rebels will be under a new head coach, but it’s still a familiar face, as three-year assistant Jennifer Klein rose up to take over the helm of the program. Having been a part of the Rebels’ last Mountain West Conference championship team, Klein knows what it will take to get UNLV back into contention for the league title after two years of struggles in MWC play. Even without the change at the top, the Rebels’ main focus coming into 2010 would be the same -- to simply find a way to score more goals. One year after tying the school season record with 37 goals in 2008, UNLV suddenly couldn’t find the back of the net, setting new team lows in both overall goals scored (15) and goals in league play (four). The poor offensive showing overshadowed another strong defensive performance from the Rebel backline, which after posting a team GAA of 1.08 will now have to deal with the graduation of half of its starters, while two-time all-conference goalie and the league’s all-time saves leader Alicia Lugo also graduated. “We struggled last year,” said Klein. “We played great soccer, we did a good job in the defensive third and midfield third, but it was the final third that we just weren’t able to score goals and put games away, and that’s been our focus in the spring and preseason practices.” Another factor could have been the team’s reliance on Ashleigh Shoughro for offense. The senior forward struggled with her shot in her second year in Las Vegas, hitting the crossbar and post numerous times but only scoring two goals after posting a school-record tying 11 in 2008. With her offensive impact, UNLV needed others to step up. The team’s failure to do (the leading scorer was Jenna Larkin with a total of three goals) resulted in a 5-9-5 season, representing the fewest wins in school history. UNLV will have to overcome the departure of seven seniors (including five starters), and the impact of their loss should be most felt on the

18

defensive end, but Klein feels good that the Rebels will be able to continue their long-standing status as one of the top defensive teams in the league thanks to the players she does have coming back for the 2010 season. One area Klein is happy with is the leadership being shown by this year’s senior class (Shoughro, LaChere Anglin, Amanda Forrester, Sarah Naranjo). “I think the girls have put a lot of work into it in the spring and over the summer, and they came back this fall with a good foundation for what we need to succeed,” said Klein. “However, it’s up to both the players and the coaches working together to lead us where we want to go, which is to get back into the top half of the MWC. “I feel we have a talented group of returnees, we have a talented group of newcomers, and if we all put in the hard work and know what it will require of us to win, it should come together for a successful season.” FORWARDS Up front the Rebels have a pair of returning starters, beginning with Shoughro. The Las Vegas native is one of the most dangerous scorers in the league thanks to her pace and strong leg. “Ashleigh is very competitive, has a strong desire to win, and her energy on the field really feeds the team,” said Klein. Collette Jepson also returns up front after posting six points (two goals, two assists), highest among last year’s freshmen. “Collete is a big time player, she has the ability to create and score, and we feel she is just barely beginning to realize her potential on the soccer field,” noted Klein. Also returning is Danielle O’Neil, who saw significant playing time for the first time in 2009 (starting four games), Elizabeth Billington (three starts), Katherine Orellana, who will play both forward and midfield, and Larkin, whose three goals last year all came off the bench.

2010 UNLV WOMEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

2010 SEASON OUTLOOK G GOALKEEPERS There is no doubt this is the area of the team with the biggest question m marks entering the season. For the first time in the history of the program, tthe Rebels will not have a single goalie on the roster with at least one ccareer start under her belt. In fact, of the four goalies, three are freshmen, w while sophomore Ashlee Dela Cruz has a total of 1:57 playing time in hher career. Klein is not worried, however. She is excited about the potential of tthe group, especially noting how all four bring different strengths and sskill sets to the netminder role. Dela Cruz is the early favorite for the start iin the season opener due to having gone through spring practice, but the sstarting role is wide open, and it should be a fierce battle in preseason camp bbetween her and the freshman trio of Nicole Cipriano, Kelli McCracken aand Kylie Wassell. “We have Ashlee who is very athletic with a strong lleg, Nicole is just a good shot stopper, knows how to get in the way of the bball, Kelli is probably the best all-around, while Kylie has great footwork aand is the most technical player,” said Klein. “We feel very good about oour choices in goal.”

SHOUGHRO Klein is excited about the newcomers, beginning with local recruit Jahmela Williams, who is looked at as an impressive goal scorer who will also take on players. Also new is Jenn Wolfe of Olathe, Kan.

S SCHEDULE The season starts off at UC Riverside on Aug. 20, and is then followed bby five straight weekends of tournaments, including three at home. The hhome opener is on Aug. 27 against Albany, while highlights of the noncconference schedule include a potential game against either Colorado or D Denver (Sept. 6), and home games against Oregon (Sept. 10), Cal State N Northridge (Sept. 12) and Long Beach State (Sept. 17). The league slate begins for UNLV on Oct. 1 with a home contest aagainst New Mexico, while this year’s league tournament will be held in S San Diego, Calif., from Nov. 3-6. “I like our schedule, we have one that is very manageable,” said K Klein. “The team’s we’re playing are going to challenge us, help us grow and help prepare us for MWC play.”

MIDFIELDERS Leading the midfield position is the only returning starter in Forrester. “Amanda is key to our midfield gameplan,” said Klein. “In terms of position and creating and getting the balls to the forward, she really shows good leadership at the position.” Forrester is also one of the team’s top threats to score on a header. Sarah Naranjo (four starts), and Julie Owens (13 appearances) return as well, as does redshirt sophomore Macy Jo Harrison, who turned in an impressive spring after sitting out 2009 following a transfer from Oregon State. Haliey Garrison and Jennifer Lutjens will also give the Rebels depth at the midfielder position. Two freshmen will join the midfield ranks this fall, Courtney Botelho (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Amanda Kaufman (Las Vegas). DEFENSE The Rebels have every expectation to keep alive their tradition of having one of the top defensive backlines in the conference. The team will have to replace two starters, but return Anglin and junior Brittany Flores. “LaChere has been an outstanding defender for us since her freshman year,” said Klein. “She is fast, works hard, is an outstanding one-on-one defender, and also helps set up our attack. Brittany meanwhile uses her quickness to her advantage very well.” UNLV also has several returnees coming back that have started games in their career, as juniors Adrianna Guida and Justine Sauder will be up for starting roles this season, along with sophomore Caitlin Allen. Two newcomers to the group are Jackie Tillotson and Lexy Webber, high school teammates from Sandy, Utah.

2009 YEAR-IN-REVIEW Behind the leadership of seven seniors, the 2009 Rebels set out to play arguably the toughest schedule in program history. UNLV faced teams from the strongest soccer conferences around the nation, taking on opponents from the ACC, Big 10, Pac-10, West Coast and the Big West. On the way to a 5-9-5 finish the Rebels faced six eventual NCAA Tournament teams, and the season was highlighted by an impressive trip to the state of North Carolina where they earned a win over North Carolina State and a double-overtime tie with ACC powerhouse and 24th-ranked Duke. Several underclassmen would step up and lead the way offensively after injuries hindered 2008 leading goal scorer Ashleigh Shoughro, for most of the season. Sophomore forward Jenna Larkin led the team with three goals, and stand-out freshman Colette Jepson would finish the season second in points with two goals and two assists. Senior midfielder Shannon Hughes contributed two goals on the season, both of which were game-winners, as well as dishing out two assists. Senior goalkeeper Alicia Lugo proved to be stellar yet again, finishing the 2009 season as the Mountain West Conference’s all- time leader in saves with 329. UNLV opened the regular season at home with a tough 2-0 loss to Loyola

Marymount, but would be stronger the next weekend when it hosted the UNLV Nike Classic. The Rebels earned a 1-1 double overtime tie with eventual NCAA Tournament participant Illinois State, thanks to a goal from Jepson. In the second game, the seniors led the way as the Rebels nabbed their first win of the season, 2-1 over Cal State Bakersfield. Jamie McCoy and Hughes both posted goals in the victory. The Rebels would next make their longest trip of the season, traveling to the state of North Carolina for the first time in program history to take on ACC members North Carolina State and No. 24 Duke. Once again the seniors led the way as Hughes scored the game-winning goal to give UNLV a 1-0 victory over head coach Kat Mertz’s alma mater. UNLV then traveled to Durham, N.C., where it earned an impressive 0-0 double overtime tie with the No. 24 Blue Devils. Lugo

UNLV played a total of seven overtime contests in 2009, including five that went the entire 110 minutes.

2009 YEAR-IN-REVIEW recorded her 21st career shutout and the successful weekend improved UNLV’s unbeaten streak to four games. After returning home from the North Carolina trip, UNLV faced a tough mid-week match against Big Ten power Ohio State. Jepson and Larkin each scored goals as the hard-fought game was tied at 2-2 and went into overtime. Despite equal amounts of chances to score, Ohio State found the back of the net in the last minute of the first overtime to give the eventual NCAA Tournament participant the 3-2 win, snapping UNLV’s unbeaten streak. After the heartbreaking loss to the Buckeyes, UNLV stayed home to host a game against UC Irvine. Despite a goal from junior Amanda Forrester, the Rebels played their third straight overtime game, which ended in a 1-1 tie. UNLV then traveled to northern California to take on two WCC teams, San Francisco and St. Mary’s. The Rebels again finished with an overtime tie, this time a 0-0 result with USF, and fell 1-0 to Gaels in the second game. The team returned home for a short time to host Southern Utah in a Saturday afternoon contest. Senior Brianna Moore and Larkin each scored goals to give All-Mountain West Conference the Rebels a 2-0 win. To close out the non-conference portion of the schedule, Second Team the Rebels traveled to California to compete in the San Diego State Classic. In the Alicia Lugo first game of the tournament Larkin came to the rescue once again, scoring in the Brianna Moore last minute of the match to give UNLV a 2-1 win over Seattle University. Up next was Pac-10 member and eventual NCAA tournament participant Oregon State. MWC Players of the Week Despite playing well, the Rebels dropped the match by a score of 3-0. Just like the previous few years, UNLV opened up conference play with a Defense pair of games against conference foes Utah and No. 9 BYU. The Rebels dropped Alicia Lugo - Sept. 7 the match at home to the Utes by the score of 1-0. The Cougars traveled to Las Vegas next, and despite holding BYU to only four shots on goal, the Rebels would suffer a second straight 1-0 decision, this time to a team that would be the eventual regular champion and a NCAA tournament participant. Looking for its first win of conference play, UNLV traveled to Colorado Spring to take on Air Force. Thanks to senior Kelly Labor’s first career goal, the Rebels secured the victory, making them 1-2 in the MWC. UNLV would stay on the road and travel to Laramie to face the Wyoming Cowgirls. Shoughro tallied her first goal of the season and UNLV would come away with a 1-1 double-overtime tie. The Rebels returned home for their next set of MWC matchups, hosting TCU and eventual NCAA tournament participant and MWC tournament champion San Diego State. Shoughro scored for the second straight match and Moore added a goal against TCU to tie the game at 2-2. The Horned Frogs would come up with a golden goal, however, to steal a 3-2 victory in overtime. Recovering from the heartbreaking loss, UNLV took on San Diego State on Senior Day. The Rebels would suffer another close loss as the Aztecs topped them with a 1-0 score. To close out its conference schedule, UNLV and its seven seniors hit the road one last time to take on New Mexico. Coming into the game Lugo was closely chasing the conference all-time saves mark. The senior would make nine saves in the Rebels’ 2-0 loss to the Lobos to set the record. Though they fell just two points shy of the conference tournament, two players received conference accolades. Lugo and Moore were each named second team allconference. It was the second consecutive honor for Lugo, as she was named to the second team in 2008. Lugo led the conference in saves per game with 5.26 and posted five shutouts. It was the first career honor for Moore, who started all 19 games for the Rebels and finished the season with two goals for four points. At the end of the season, the Rebels said goodbye to seven seniors from the 2009 squad: Labor, Hughes, Moore, McCoy, four-year starting defenders Mack Neely and Dani Morin, as well as Lugo.

BIRTH OF A CONFERENCE The Mountain West Conference was conceived on May 26, 1998, when the presidents of eight institutions - Air Force, BYU, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming - decided to form a new NCAA Division I-A intercollegiate athletic conference. TCU began its first year of competition in 2005-06, completing the membership in the MWC as it stands today. THIS IS THE MOUNTAIN WEST From its inception in 1999, the Mountain West Conference has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. The Colorado Springsbased league is noted for its geographic diversity. Some of the most beautiful terrain and landscapes in the nation can be found within Mountain West boundaries, including the majestic Rocky Mountain range, which borders four MWC schools (Utah, BYU, Air Force and Colorado State). The high plains of Wyoming (elevation 7,220 feet – the highest Division I campus in the nation) contrast with the desert city of Las Vegas (the fastest growing metropolitan area in the West) and the Pacific Ocean locale of San Diego State. The southwestern flavor of New Mexico complements the western heritage and culture of Fort Worth, Texas, home of the MWC’s newest member, TCU. ACHIEVEMENTS MWC members have participated in 41 bowl games in 11 years with eight of the nine schools going to at least one postseason event. The MWC has earned 50 postseason bids in men’s basketball, including 26 NCAA Tournament appearances, while women’s basketball has tallied 51 postseason bids, 29 NCAA bids, five Sweet 16 appearances and one Elite Eight berth since 2000. The MWC has sent at least 30 teams to NCAA postseason events each of the past 11 years while capturing three NCAA team championships during that span.

YEAR IN REVIEW From the gridiron to the diamond, Mountain West Conference teams enjoyed a banner year in 2009-10. For the third consecutive year, the MWC sent a record five football teams to bowl games and posted the best win percentage among the 11 FBS conferences for the third time in six years. Three MWC teams were ranked in the final BCS Standings, Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN Coaches polls for the second straight year. TCU’s No. 4 BCS ranking marked the highest finish by a non-automatic-qualifying team in the final BCS Standings. The Horned Frogs’ automatic bid to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl marked the MWC’s third BCS bowl game. A league-record four men’s basketball teams represented the MWC in the 2010 NCAA Tournament, marking the 10th time in the last 11 years multiple teams have gone to the Big Dance. In women’s basketball, San Diego State captured the MWC Tournament crown and became the fourth MWC team to advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. The Colorado State volleyball team became the third straight MWC squad to advance to the NCAA regional semifinals. In women’s soccer, San Diego State and BYU each advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Student-athletes from BYU, TCU and UNLV represented the MWC in the NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships, with the Rebels placing a program best tie for 21st. A league record-tying six MWC men’s golf teams were invited to the 2010 NCAA Regionals, while TCU and UNLV advanced to the NCAA Championships. Multiple MWC women’s tennis teams appeared in the NCAA Tournament for the ninth consecutive year with TCU, UNLV and Utah qualifying in 2010. San Diego State joined regular-season champion BYU in the NCAA Softball Championship. MWC champion TCU became the first Mountain West team to win a NCAA baseball super regional and advance to the College World Series. After finishing the regular season at 8-10-1, the Rebels became the first team in NCAA history to win a three-game conference tournament while scoring just one goal, which came in the final seconds of a 1-0 win over Wyoming in the first round. Against No. 19 BYU in the semifinals and No. 10 Utah on its home field in the championship game, freshman goalkeeper Alicia Lugo went 220 minutes without allowing a goal, and the Rebels would win the penalty kick shootout in both games to claim a second straight tournament title and make another NCAA appearance.

UNLV posted a school-record 13 wins during the season and won its first MWC Tournament championship on its home field by winning backto-back overtime games. Tournament MVP Katie Carney’s golden goal gave the Rebels a 1-0 win over New Mexico in the championship game. With an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, UNLV nearly pulled off a big upset, losing to host Cal State Fullerton 1-0 in overtime. Jenna Huff became the first-ever three-time All-MWC goalkeeper.

The first undefeated home record in school history helped spark the Rebels to their second MWC regular-season championship. UNLV recorded shutouts in four of its seven conference games, which included a Senior Night 1-0 victory over No. 24 BYU, the first-ever win for UNLV over the Cougars, and finished with a 5-1-1 mark. UNLV lost the MWC championship game 2-1 at BYU and just missed out on a NCAA at-large bid, Kat Mertz was named MWC Coach of the Year, while Katie Carney was the Player of the Year.

THE UNIVERSITY

UNLV CAMPUS FACTS

C

ombining the excitement of an urban location with the charm of a traditional campus, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas offers students a full educational and social experience. Just decades old, UNLV has maintained a healthy rate of growth in enrollment, programs and scholastic excellence as part of the eight-component Nevada System of Higher Education. Located in the heart of one of the world’s most vibrant and dynamic cities, UNLV has matured along with the Las Vegas area. With enrollment more than doubling the last decade, the tremendous growth has meant a flurry of construction resulting in a campus setting boasting academic and athletic facilities second to none. Steadily becoming a traditional residential university, UNLV provides on-campus housing for more than 2,000 students. A variety of student clubs and organizations along with 26 Greek organizations supplement the social development of students. From within its 15 schools and colleges, including the new William S. Boyd School of Law, UNLV is also becoming a leading research institution of the West. The school’s scientific, social science, and business programs attract millions of dollars in research grants annually to fund projects in desert biology, nuclear waste transportation, laser physics, public opinion surveys and many others. In addition to traditional student programs, UNLV serves diverse local, national and international communities through its Educational Outreach Division, offering Summer Term, Continuing Education and Distance Education programs enrolling more than 53,000 students annually. With its Performing Arts Center, the campus is the cultural hub of Southern Nevada. World-class orchestras and soloists, dance and theater arts combine to provide a broad selection of concerts and stage productions. The Barrick Lecture Series and several campus organizations bring noted speakers to the University, and local and visiting artists show their works in the Donna Beam Fine Art Gallery. UNLV has excellent athletic facilities as well, many open for student and public use. Opened in 1957 as the southern regional division of the University of Nevada with a total of 28 students, UNLV now is home to more than 29,000 students coming from every county in Nevada, all 50 U.S. states and 88 countries. Much of UNLV’s tremendous expansion is the result of support from the Nevada Legislature and

the state’s taxpayers. Private donors have played an important role as well. These gifts support new facilities and programs and, most important, provide the scholarship incentives that bring Nevada’s best and brightest student scholars to campus. UNLV operates an on-campus Center for Business and Economic Research, Center for Economic Education, Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies (in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency), Desert Biology Research Center, Center for Survey Research, Nuclear Waste Transportation Research Center and other research and public-service centers. Offering 108 undergraduate programs and 138 graduate tracts, UNLV graduated a class of more than 5,000 last year. The University operates on a semester system and is a member of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the Council of Graduate Schools, the American Council of Education and the Western College Association. All of the University’s academic programs are fully accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, and many programs have received further accreditation from independent national accreditation bodies.

ATHLETICS DIRECTOR

ATHLETICS DIRECTOR JIM LIVENGOOD

B

ringing with him a wealth of experience and the reputation as one of the nation’s top administrators, Jim Livengood was introduced as UNLV’s 11th full-time Director of Athletics on Dec. 17, 2009. Livengood wasted no time getting to work, as less than two weeks later he hired Bobby Hauck as the 10th head coach in Rebel football history. Just three months after that it was announced that a new, state-of-the-art basketball practice facility, the Mendenhall Center, would be built, with construction starting later in the year. Livengood came to UNLV following a successful tenure of more than 15 years at the University of Arizona where he oversaw an athletics program that annually competed for championships not only in the Pac-10 Conference but also at a national level, maintained a high academic standard for its student-athletes and continually operated its $43 million budget in the black. His fiscal leadership helped Arizona remain one of the lone black-ink athletics programs among a small handful of institutions that rely exclusively on generated funds and do not receive state-appropriated monies. During his time in Tucson, he served as the Pacific-10 Conference president, chair of the Pac-10 Athletic Directors Revenue Sharing Committee and a member of the conference's Bowl Committee and Basketball Tournament Subcommittee. He also was a member of the Rose Bowl Management Committee, the NCAA Fellows program, NACDA President, and chair of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee, on which he served five years. His work at Arizona and its extension on the national level earned him an Athletic Director of the Year Award from the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics in 2006 for Division I-A.

60

Livengood initiated Campaign Arizona, which raised more than $130 million for athletic facility improvements and endowments while the Wildcats maintained a top-25 competitive record in the NACDA Directors' Cup (formerly Sears Cup), including high rankings of sixth in 1993-94, fourth in 1994-95, seventh in 1995-96, sixth in both 1996-97 and 1997-98 and ninth in 2001-02. That record reflects success throughout Arizona's broad-based program, highlighted by participation in the 1994 and 2001 NCAA Men's Final Four and champions of the 1997 NCAA Men's National Basketball Tournament. Arizona also won the 1994, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2006 and 2007 NCAA Women's Softball College World Series titles, the 1996 and 2000 NCAA Women's Golf titles and the 2008 men's and women's NCAA Swimming Championships. UA's student-athlete graduation rate continued to be historically higher than that of the general student body rate during his tenure at UA. Nearly 100 student-athletes earned conference or regional all-academic honors, and 20 percent of UA student-athletes attained honors-level cumulative grade point averages. Livengood is a member of the NCAA Fellows Program to mentor new athletic directors, has served as a member of the NCAA Peer Review Team from 1994-99, the NCAA Gender Equity Task Force, and the Women's Committee on Athletics. He has been a member of the NACDA Preseason Football Games Committee since 2000 and was a member of the NACDA Strategic Planning Committee from 1999-2001. He served as NACDA president in 1998-1999, and in 1999 was named Division I-A Athletic Director of the Year. He is also a member of the Division 1-A Athletic Directors Association, having served as president of that association in 1998. Livengood spent six years as the Athletics Director at Washington State University from 198893 where he developed what is still widely regarded as a model gender-equity program. In addition he laid the groundwork for a student-athlete wellness center that is regarded as one of the finest in the nation. Livengood began his administrative career in 1980 as the Associate Director for Development and Public Relations at Washington State before becoming the Athletics Director at

Six different Rebel sports will be represented during ceremonies, as the seven-person, two-team class will be inducted into the UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame as the Class of 2010 on Oct. 1. Five former Rebel standout players, one head coach and a distinguished contributor will join two record-setting teams in being inducted. Born in 1987, UNLV’s Athletics Hall of Fame will now grow to 105 members strong. Under the hall’s bylaws, former student-athletes must have completed their eligibility at least 10 years earlier to be selected. Coaches and administrators must have stopped working at the University five years previous. All classes now enter on a biennial basis. JEREMY ANDERSON (1996-2000) was prolific performer on the golf course and in the classroom and is the only athlete in school history to be a three-time All-American and three-time academic AllAmerican. A member of head coach Dwaine Knight’s 1998 National Championship squad, Anderson had the unusual honor of being voted player of the year in two different conferences (1999 Western Athletic and 2000 Mountain West). A first team All-American in 1999 and 2000, he was also a second team choice in 1998 as he posted three finishes in the top 30 at NCAA Championships. DANIEL BARBER (1989-92) is one of only two All-Americans in Rebel soccer history, as he was a Freshman All-American in 1989 and then a third team selection two seasons later. UNLV’s all-time assists leader with 26, Barber was first team all-conference and all-region in 1991 and first team all-league again in ‘92. JULIE CRANDALL (1995-98) is regarded as the best catcher in UNLV’s storied softball history and is one of five Rebels to be a multipleseason All-American as she was voted third team in both 1995 and ‘98. A three-time first team all-conference honoree, Crandall started behind the plate as a freshman for the best team in school history, helping the 1995 Rebels to a tie for third place at the Women’s College World Series. NICK GARRITANO (1991-94) was arguably the nation’s top place-kicker as a senior and he left as UNLV’s second-leading scorer in history with 240 points (four points behind running back Mike Thomas). Leading the Rebels in scoring three of his four seasons, Garritano was a 1994 semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award after leading all of college football in 50-yard field goals made, nailing five of seven attempts from 50-59 yards. RYAN LUDWICK (1997-99) played three seasons at UNLV before becoming the fourth-highest draft pick in program history (60th overall in 1999). ninth in batting average (.363) and still ranks fourth at the school with 43 homeruns. The 1997 First Team Freshman All-American was a two-time preseason All-American and postseason all-conference honoree. The 1994 UNLV FOOTBALL TEAM is one of two in school history to win a conference championship and head coach Jeff Horton’s squad did it in style with a stunning 32-27 upset of arch-rival Nevada, Reno at Sam Boyd Stadium. The Rebels, who at 5-1 shared the league title with UNR and Louisiana-Lafayette, earned the Big West’s lone postseason bid via tie-breaker and went on to rout Central Michigan 52-24 in Las Vegas Bowl III to finish with an overall record of 7-5 and post the program’s most wins in 10 years. The 1985 UNLV MEN’S SOCCER TEAM was the winningest group in program history, seting multiple school records, including most wins and fewest losses as head coach Barry Barto’s squad finished 18-2-2. The Rebels, who also reeled off a record 18-game unbeaten streak during the campaign, finished the season ranked fourth in the nation by Soccer America after rising as high as second that fall. HEAD COACH DR. LARRY EASLEY (Deceased) (1992-03) coached the UNLV men’s tennis team longer than anyone in history, was named conference coach of the year three times and was also twice named Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Coach of the Year in 1998 and 2001. His all-time record of 141-120 included leading UNLV to three Big West Conference championships. Easley produced four of UNLV’s five all-time men’s All-Americans, including two individual national champions when Luke Smith won the NCAA singles championship and then teamed with Tim Blenkiron to capture the NCAA doubles title in 1997. DISTINGUISHED CONTRIBUTOR BOB MENDENHALL is the owner and chief executive officer of the Las Vegas Paving Corporation.
