& CONDITIONING

UNLV women's golf strength and conditioning program, under the guidance of Jason Kabo, is geared towards developing student-athletes' athletic potential through a personalized program that focuses on generating power and strength as well as increasing flexibility and cardiovascular endurance. Benefitting from an individualized conditioning regimen implemented by Kabo, Rebel players follow a year-round system stressing the development of strength, power, speed and plyometrics. "Our goal and focus is to provide a program that benefits each individual athlete," Kabo said. "Our student-athletes are provided the best regiment possible to put them in a position to compete and succeed at the highest level in collegiate athletics." Jason Kabo has been involved with the UNLV strength and conditioning department since 1999. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the NSCA and holds a Sports Nutrition Certification with IFA. Kabo is a Pennsylvania native and a 1999 graduate of Slippery Rock University (of Pennsylvania), with a bachelor‘s degree in exercise science. After volunteering and completing an internship in UNLV’s strength and conditioning department, he was promoted to assistant strength and conditioning coach and then assistant director in 2007. He is in his 11th year overall working with the men's basketball program, and also works with women's basketball, baseball, volleyball, women's golf and the swimming and diving programs at UNLV. Kabo has also been involved in various basketball camps, the NBA Pre- Draft Camp and assists with several NBA Summer League teams during their time in Las Vegas. He and his wife Sheri have two daughters, Madeline (7) and Reese (2). Complete with three offices, the 8,500-square-foot deck features free weights, power racks and 20 Olympic lifting platforms. UNLV's facility houses more than 60 weight stations and Hammer Strength Machines. The 1,200-square-foot second level offers stretching and aerobic area catered to each sport. The room also features a premium sound system to further enhance the workout experience. A unique addition to the already well-equipped facility is an outdoor turf area for all functional training and pre-workout stretching, utilized by all teams.

Providing the best possible preventive and rehabilitative care, the UNLV women's golf athletic training staff is headed by Director of Athletic Training Kyle Wilson. Made possible by a generous gift of $1.5 million by Marilyn and Si Redd, the athletic training facility incorporates the total scope of sports medicine over an 8,500-square-foot area. Aside from five staff offices, a rehabilitation room houses a dozen pieces of equipment including Cybex stationary bicycles, stair machines and treadmills, all under a natural skylight. The largest area features a dozen tables to offer student-athletes various treatments throughout the day. Taping, padding and bracing all take place in another all-inclusive room. Finally, an aquatic therapy room features three above-ground whirlpools surrounding a 10-feet deep pool for rehabilitative exercises. All of these features make it possible for UNLV student-athletes to rehabilitate injuries without ever needing to leave the Lied Athletic Complex. Other amenities include a physician's office and exam room to provide daily medical service for student-athletes. A drug-testing facility also is part of the new complex. This expedites medical care because the student-athletes health care is self-contained. Also, UNLV's academic program and its student athletic trainers benefit from a sports medicine library, study room and conference facility. "Aside from being four times larger than our former facility," says Kyle Wilson, UNLV's Director of Athletic Training. "This is one of the top complexes in the nation because of the versatility it offers to service student-athletes in every area of sports medicine. We're now more efficient, more acce sible and more effective in preventing and rehabilitating athletic injuries."

Craig Thompson was the Mountain West Conference’s first employee when he was named commissioner on Oct. 15, 1998. Ever since, Thompson has navigated the newest NCAA Division I conference through the ever-changing landscape of intercollegiate athletics. As the league enters its 12th season of competition in 2010-11, Thompson continues to create and improve the opportunities for MWC institutions and studentathletes to be successful both academically and athletically. Since the Mountain West Conference opened its doors on January 4, 1999, Thompson has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics, while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. Progressive in its approach, the MWC has flourished under the guidance of Commissioner Thompson and continutes to cultivate opportunities for student-athletes to compete at the highest level, while fostering academic achievement and sportsmanship. He has been instrumental in negotiating nearly $230 million in television revenue and has been an innovator in the postseason bowl structure as MWC teams have participated in five inaugural bowl games. His leadership and vision have helped the conference enhance its television revenue and exposure through revolutionary agreements with CBS College Sports Network and Co cast to become the first collegiate athletic conference to launch a dedicated sports channel featuring exclusive programming around its nine athletic programs. Thompson has been instrumental in strengthening the position of the MWC in its current Bowl Championship Series (BCS) structure. In 2006, he spearheaded an effort that resulted in better access for the MWC and more than doubled the annual BCS revenue on an annual basis for non automatic-qualifying conferences. The MWC has been steadfast in its efforts to find a way to make the BCS system fair to all universities. Through its first 11 years of competition, the MWC has participated in 41 bowl games. For the third time in six years, the MWC posted the best win percentage among the 11 FBS conferences in 2009-10. The Mountain West claimed the 2009-10 Bowl Challenge Cup after sending five teams into postseason action and finishing with a 4-1 (.800) mark. Prior to his current role, Thompson served as the commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference for nearly eight years and as the only commissioner of the American South Conference prior to the merger of the two leagues in 1991. Thompson graduated from the University of Minnesota with an undergraduate degree in journalism. He and his wife, Carla, have a son (Ted) and a daughter (Emma).

From its inception in 1999, the Mountain West has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics, while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. Progressive in its approach, the MW continues to cultivate opportunities for student-athletes to compete at the highest level, while fostering academic achievement and sportsmanship. Now in its 13th year, the MW has been assertive in its involvement with the NCAA governance structure and has taken a leadership role in the overall administration of intercollegiate athletics. The Mountain West has marked several achievements over its first 12 years of existence, most notably becoming the first to establish a sports television network dedicated solely to an intercollegiate athletic conference (The Mtn.). The Mountain West also was the first to experiment with the coaches’ challenge in the college football instant replay system, and was the first non-automatic-qualifying BCS conference to participate in four BCS bowl games, winning three. Additionally, the Mountain West was the first conference to have a member institution with No. 1 overall picks in both the NFL and NBA drafts in the same year (Utah’s Alex Smith and Andrew Bogut, respectively in 2005). With San Diego State’s Stephen Strasburg claiming the No. 1 pick in the 2009 MLB Draft, the Mountain West is one of two conferences to have the No. 1 selection in each of the NFL, NBA and MLB drafts since the MW was founded in 1999. In 2011-12, the Mountain West will be among the first conferences to implement a league-wide state-of-the art basketball instant replay system. The Mountain West is noted for its geographic diversity. Some of the most beautiful terrain and landscapes in the nation can be found within Mountain West boundaries, including the majestic Rocky Mountain range, which borders three MW institutions (Air Force, newest member Boise State and Colorado State). The high plains of Wyoming (elevation 7,220 feet – the highest Division I campus in the nation) contrast with the desert city of Las Vegas (the fastest growing metropolitan area in the West) and the Pacific Ocean locale of San Diego State. The southwestern flavor of New Mexico complements the western heritage and culture of Fort Worth, Texas, home of TCU. HISTORY The Mountain West was conceived on May 26, 1998, when the presidents of eight institutions — Air Force, BYU, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming — decided to form a new NCAA Division I-A intercollegiate athletic conference. The split from a former 16-team conference re-established continuity and stability among the membership within the new league and signaled the continuation of its tradition-rich, long-standing athletic rivalries. Three of the MW’s eight original members have been conference rivals since the 1960s (New Mexico, Wyoming and Colorado State), while San Diego State (1978) and Air Force (1980) were longtime members as well. UNLV and TCU entered the fold in 1996 and the Rebels continued as one of the original eight institutions that formed the MW in 1999. TCU re-joined the group with its first year of competition in the Mountain West in 2005-06. Effective July 1, 2011, Boise State University became the newest member. California State University, Fresno and the University of Nevada, Reno will join the Mountain West effective July 1, 2012. Also on July 1, 2012, the University of Hawai‘i will become a football-only member of the Conference. When the Mountain West officially began operations on July 1, 1999, the new league had in place a seven-year contract with ESPN, giving the broadcaster exclusive national television rights to MW football and men’s basketball, and three-year agreements to send the league’s football champion to the Liberty Bowl and a second team to the Las Vegas Bowl. Commissioner Craig Thompson also arranged a third bowl tie-in each of the first three seasons (1999 Motor City, 2000 Silicon Valley, 2001 New Orleans) before securing a four-year deal with the Emerald Bowl in San Francisco in 2002. Entering the 2011 season, the MW has four contracted bowl affiliations – the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas, San Diego Country Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl, AdvoCare V100 Independence Bowl and Gildan New Mexico Bowl. An innovator in the postseason bowl structure, the MW engineered many “firsts,” as league teams have participated in five inaugural bowl games (2000 Silicon Valley, 2001 New Orleans, 2002 San Francisco (Emerald), 2005 Poinsettia, 2006 New Mexico), as well as placing the first non-automatic-qualifying BCS team into a BCS bowl game with Utah’s appearance in the 2005 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

2010-11 unlv women’s golf

seasonOUTLOOK The UNLV women's golf program enters the 2011-12 season with nearly a complete overhaul after saying goodbye to five players from a year ago, including the most decorated golfer in Rebel history in Therese Koelbaek. Second-year head coach Amy Bush is back after leading the squad to its ninth straight NCAA postseason appearance in just the 10th year of existence. While an assistant during the previous four seasons, Bush helped lead the Rebels to four straight NCAA Regional appearances and one trip to the NCAA Championships, finishing a program-best 16th. Since 2007, Bush has helped guide the program to 24 top-10 finishes in regular-season action and developed All-American Therese Koelbaek into one of the nation’s best collegiate golfers. Joining Bush this season will be Erin Andrews. Andrews is a 2006 graduate of the University of Oregon, where she was a four-year letterman for the Ducks and a 2004 All-Pac 10 honoree. “We are really excited to welcome Erin to the women’s golf program,” said Bush. “Her experience at the Division I level at a highly competitive school gives her an advantage of understanding the hard work that goes into building a successful team.” Andrews, a Las Vegas local, captured two state titles at Durango High before moving on to Oregon. She remains among UO’s top-10 in career rounds played (109) and for rounds counted, factoring in the top five in 87.2 percent of rounds played. The Rebels’ senior class comprised of Kristin Schelling and Bethany Calvo bring a combined wealth of experience and a set of dynamic skills to the squad. Schelling will be battling back from an injury that caused her to miss the spring season a year ago. In three tournaments last fall, she posted two top-25 finishes, placing in a tie for 21st at the Golfweek Conference Challenge and a tie for ninth at the Dale McNamara Invitational, helping lead UNLV to team finishes of sixth and fifth respectively. Calvo enters her final season with plenty of tournament experience during her Rebel career. She carried a 79.37 scoring average in nine tournaments last season. She carded a career-low 4-under 68 in the second round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Invitational en route to a tie for 27th. Her top finish of the year, a tie for 20th came at the Mountain West Conference Championship Tournament. "Our senior class will be vital to our team this year," said Bush. "With five newcomers to the squad and just one junior on the roster, senior leadership will be at a premium." The Rebels bring one junior and two sophomores, one of which is a transfer from the University of Tulsa. Ellis Keenan and Katerina Prorokova both enjoyed successful campaigns a year ago and look to build momentum from the spring portion of the schedule to the start of this season. “Ellis and Katerina are great players that can consistently help our team this year,” said Bush. “Katerina gained valuable experience after playing in the starting lineup all of her first year while Ellis enjoyed a standout spring season a year ago.”

page 8

The 2011-12 UNLV Women's Golf Team Keenan returns after playing in eight tournaments a year ago. The London, England native carried the fourth lowest scoring average at 77.38 and ended the spring season with a tie for fifth place at the MW Championship Tournament, helping UNLV to a second-place team finish. Sophomore Prorokova tied for the most tournaments and rounds played last season with 11 and 33 respectively. The Czech Republic native carded two top-25 finishes. Her season low of 72 came during the first round of the UNLV Spring Invitational, where she went on to her best tournament finish at a tie for 22nd. Sophomore transfer Charlotte Brooks joins the squad after one season at the University of Tulsa where she competed in 10 tournaments as a true freshman, including the NCAA West Regional. The Morrinsville, New Zealand native was instrumental in helping UT to runner-up finishes at both the Ole Miss Intercollegiate and the Conference USA Championship Tournament.

The four-member freshman class, comprised of Mayko Chwen Wang, Dana Finkelstein, Hee Jeong Lim and Marguerite Swearingen, is the largest at UNLV in recent years. Wang and Lim bring international experience to the table, having competed extensively in their home countries of Taiwan and South Korea respectively. Amy Bush enters her second season as head coach of the UNLV women's golf program, taking over the reins of a perennial competitor in June of 2010. Bush helped guide the Rebels to their 10th straight NCAA Regional berth, posting nine top-10 finishes in 11 events during the 2010-11 season. UNLV posted top-5 finishes at the Dale McNamara Invitational, Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational and at the Mountain West Conference Championship Tournament, finishing runner-up to TCU. Under Bush’s guidance, senior Therese Koelbaek became the fourth women’s golfer to earn Mountain West Player of the Year honors. The Denmark native dominated all season, racking up 10 top-10 finishes in 11 events, including winning the MW Tournament Championship by a record-tying seven stroke margin. Koelbaek became the first golfer in program history to earn All-MW honors four straight years and collected a slew of post-season accolades, including the 2011 Mountain West Female Scholar Athlete of the Year and a CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America First Team selection. The 2010-11 squad also earned the program’s first top-25 finish in the nation in team GPA, tying for 24th on the National Golf Coaches Association’s top 25 listing. UNLV was the highest nationally ranked team to appear on the list. Bush had spent the previous three years as the top assistant to former head coach Missy Ringler. During that time the Rebels made three consecutive appearances in NCAA Regional competition and one trip to the NCAA Championships, where they turned in a program-best finish of 16th overall in 2008. Since 2007, the program has posted 25 top-10 finishes in regular-season tournament play. "Amy is the perfect person to follow Missy in leading the UNLV women's golf team," Livengood said. "She has prepared very well for this opportunity and will be an outstanding head coach. Our student-athletes will be well served by Amy's leadership." Prior to joining Ringler's staff, Bush was the Chapter Coordinator for the Southwest Section PGA, where she was responsible for the overall operations for Las Vegas from 2005 to 2007. She was the tournament director for numerous events, including the PGA Junior Series, Arizona Open and the Southwest Section Championship. She earned the 2006 Las Vegas Chapter Golf Professional of the Year while working at the Southwest Section PGA. Bush served as the assistant golf professional from 2001-05 at SouthShore Golf Club at Lake Las Vegas Resort, working on the day-to-day operations at the course. She also served as an assistant golf professional for the TPC at Summerlin where she assisted with a PGA Tour event and a Champions Tour event. Bush graduated from New Mexico State in 2000 with a bachelor's degree in business administration with a specialization in professional golf management, from a program that is sanctioned by the PGA. In 2007, Bush completed her Master's Degree in Sports and Leisure Management from UNLV. Bush graduated from the NCAA Women's Coaches Academy in Denver, Colo. in June 2008. In 2010, she also attended the NCAA Women's Coaches Academy Dimension 2 which was held in Boston, Mass. In 2011, Bush attended the NACWAA Institute in Denver, Colorado. In 2009, Bush was once again honored by the PGA and was named the 2009 Bill Strausbaugh Award winner for community service. Currently, Amy serves as the President of the Southern Nevada Chapter of the Southwest Section PGA, the first woman to be elected to that post. Bush has more than 12 years of experience as a golf professional and is a Class A member of the PGA of America. In addition to coaching, Bush is active with the PGA, serving as the President for the Southern Nevada Section PGA and also a board member for the Southwest Section PGA. She has also presented at the PGA Fall Expo Main Stage and serving on the boards of The First Tee and Southern Nevada Golf Association. Bush was married to Kendall Herzer on August 7, 2010. The couple resides in Las Vegas, NV.

Erin Andrews was hired as assistant coach for the UNLV women's golf team during the summer of 2011. Andrews, a Las Vegas native and graduate of Durango High School lettered four times for the University of Oregon Ducks and was a 2004 All-Pac 10 honoree. “We are excited to add Erin to our program,” said Bush. “Erin’s experience within various sports programs will be a great asset to the women’s golf team here at UNLV. She understands the hard work that goes into building a successful team, bringing a wealth of knowledge from both on and off the golf course.” Andrews led Durango HS to two state titles before accepting a full scholarship to Oregon in 2003. She opened her sophomore season with the Ducks winning the Lady Vandal Fall Invitational, becoming UO’s first medalist winner in two seasons in the process. She tied for the team lead in scoring average that season en route to all-conference honors. She capped her career with a 15th place finish at the 2006 Pac-10 Championship, the highest Duck finisher in the tournament. Andrews still sits among the top 10 in the record books at UO, standing tied for seventh for career rounds played (109) and for rounds counted, factoring in the top five in 87.2 percent of rounds played. “I am honored to be a part of the UNLV athletic family,” said Andrews. “I am very excited to have the chance to join the staff with the women’s golf team and look forward to helping contribute to an established and nationally recognized program .” Andrews was a qualifier for the USGA Junior Girls Championship in 2002 and the Women’s Amateur in 2004, 2005 and 2007. Last fall she joined Bush in helping lead a clinic for the promotion of women’s golf at the annual Justin Timberlake Shriner’s Hospital for Children Open. The Rebels closed the 2010-11 season having qualified for its ninth consecutive NCAA Regional appearance in the 10th season as a program

sunny OH

Da Sol Chung became the second UNLV All-American selection after putting together the best season in the program's history in 2005-06. Chung won MWC Player of the Year honors and league medalist honors in 2006. She followed that with a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships, the highest finish ever by a MWC golfer. Chung garnered NGCA first-team honors, the first such honor for a Rebel golfer.

The first All-American in the program's history, Sunny Oh set the standard for UNLV women's golf in her two years as a Rebel. A two-time All-American selection, Oh earned her first nod in 2003 as an NGCA honorable mention selection as a freshman. She followed that by being named to the NGCA second team as a sophomore, as she won medalist honors at the MWC Tournament on her way to being named MWC Player of the Year.

Therese Koelbaek is the only player in UNLV women's golf history to earn All-America honors three times. She was named to Golfweek's third team following a standout senior season after earning honorable mention honors in 2008 and 2009. Koelbaek finished her career as the 2011 Mountain West Golfer of the Year and won medalist honors at the 2011 MW Championship Tournament.
