PALATIAL SOCCER COMPLEX

PETER JOHANN MEMORIAL FIELD The dedication of Peter Johann Memorial Soccer Field during the 1983 season marked a special occasion for all those who were involved with the building of UNLV’s first on-campus soccer facility. Despite the fact that UNLV soccer has been around since 1974, Rebel teams in the past never truly had a “home field” to call their own. And, when former men’s soccer head coach Barry Barto assumed his position prior to the 1982 season, building an on-campus soccer field became a priority. Barto approached then-athletics director Brad Rothermel to work out a solution to the problem and the two settled on the current location, where the old softball field had previously existed. Once the site was finalized, a huge community effort was instrumental in the building of the soccer field. The field is named after the late son of Kenneth F. Johann, a real estate businessman who has lived in Las Vegas for more than 40 years. Johann has been a strong 4

supporter of Rebel soccer and he and his wife, Alice, set up a scholarship fund in memory of their son. Thus, Johann was more than happy to be a part of the overall community effort. Johann Field played host to the 1983 ISAA Senior Bowl All-Star Game where the West team posted a 4-0 victory. Numerous international matches have also been played on its pitch and it is also the site of the annual UNLV/Nike Soccer Classic for both the men’s and women’s squads. The facility has also played host to three Las Vegas Soccer Spectaculars. The inaugural contest in 2002 featured the WUSA’s San Jose CyberRays and the San Diego Spirit, while in the spring of 2003, the Boston Breakers took on San Jose. The final spectacular was in March of 2003, between UNLV and the Mexican Olympic Team, who had just claimed a spot in the 2004 Athens Games. In the spring of 2007, a sellout crowd watched the first-ever MLS contest on the UNLV 2011 UNLV MEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

campus, as Real Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids played to a 0-0 draw in an exhibition contest on March 31. In 2004, the UNLV men’s soccer team posted its 125th victory at the site, achieving the milestone in the second to last game of the year. The Rebels eclipsed the century mark in 174 games over 16 years. With the addition of endzone seats in 1997, the grandstands now offer seating for approximately 2,500 spectators in an open seating arrangement, and the facility boasts natural grass, a press box, and lights The Rebel Alumni Park, dedicated in 2002, was made possible for night matches. The facility was by the efforts of alumni and friends of the Rebel soccer program. most recently upgraded during the summer of 2006, as a $300,000 renovation led to a new irrigation system as well as new sod and grass for the field. Generally regarded as one of the top college soccer facilities in the West, Johann Field celebrates its 29th season in 2011.

Providing the best possible preventative and rehabilitative care, the UNLV soccer athletic training staff is headed by Director of Athletic Training Kyle Wilson. The trainer for this year’s team is Bernie Chavies. Made possible by a generous gift of $1.5 million by Marilyn and Si Redd, the Lied Athletic complex’s athletic training facility incorporates the total scope of sports medicine over an 8,500-square-foot area. Aside from five staff offices, a rehabilitation room houses a dozen pieces of equipment including Cybex stationary bicycles, stair machines and treadmills, all under a natural skylight. The largest area features a dozen tables to offer student-athletes various treatments throughout the day. Taping, padding and bracing all take place in another all-inclusive room. Finally, an aquatic therapy room features three above-ground whirlpools surrounding a 10-feet deep pool for rehabilitative exercises. Bernie Chavies All of these features make it possible for UNLV Athletic Trainer student-athletes to rehabilitate injuries without ever needing to leave the confines of the Lied Athletic Complex. Other amenities include a physician’s office and exam room to provide daily medical service for student-athletes. A drug-testing facility also is part of the complex. The 2011 UNLV men’s soccer season marks the 37th year in which the Peter Johann Memorial Scholarship will benefit a Las Vegas native on the team. Freshman forward Salvador Bernal of Clark High School in Las Vegas is this year’s scholarship recipient. He is the son of Salvador Bernal and Rosa Flores. Since 1974, the UNLV men’s soccer program has been quite fortunate to have the support of Las Vegas businessman Ken Johann and his wife, Alice. It was that fall in 1974 when the Johanns’ son, Peter, died in a sporting accident. The next fall, the Johanns decided to honor their late son with a memorial scholarship. Established in 1975, the Peter Johann Memorial Scholarship assists one deserving student-athlete in attending classes at UNLV while participating in intercollegiate soccer. The scholarship is awarded to the student-athlete each season who demonstrates excellence in six areas: academic performance, techniques and tactics of soccer, team loyalty, cooperation, leadership and endurance. In return for their generosity, UNLV’s first-ever on-campus soccer field was dedicated to the memory of Peter Johann when it was built on the north side of the campus in 1983. The Rebels have called Peter Johann Memorial Field home for the past 28 years.

The number one priority for most new head coaches usually the same, to win more games than the year before. But for second-year Rebel head coach Rich Ryerson, it can be forgiven that wins and losses were probably second on his list. And what was at the top of the list in 2010? Saving the men’s soccer program at UNLV. And saving it is exactly what Ryerson did. With the threat of seeing the program dropped due to unprecedented budget cuts in the state, Ryerson was key in helping bring in a record donation to the team, $850,000 from the Englestad Foundation. That donation, which was finalized in the spring of 2011, gave the Rebels a strong base for the next five years. Ryerson’s second goal was also to save his roster. Following the departure of Mario Sanchez as coach in 2010, UNLV lost a total of 13 of 22 players from the roster between a combination of graduation, transfers, and incoming recruits that chose to sign elsewhere before Ryerson was named head coach in April of 2010. But Ryerson was able to keep several key players on the team, most notably his top two scorers. That would pay off as UNLV posted six wins, including highlight victories over Stanford and Denver, an eventual NCAA at-large selection. With the solid footing the Rebels now find themselves under, Ryerson has been able to add another group of impressive freshmen to last year’s class. One year after struggling to put a product together on the field, Ryerson is now in place to field a team capable of challenging for a top-half conference finish. “Overall, I was disappointed last year in our record with only six wins, but at the same time, I felt we were in every single game except perhaps for two. And there were several positives, the wins over Denver and Stanford, and we had three losses to New Mexico by one goal each, two in overtime.” Ryerson was also happy with the core group in 2010, Stephen Sifuentes, Nick Marshall, Jonny Espinoza and Mike Mota. “These four players really helped us bring the whole team together after the departures, they helped us transition into a new year that included 11 newcomers, and

to play together as a team on the field. They really made a strong statement with their actions on and off the field.” All four of those players earned all-conference honors during 2010. While Sifuentes is gone, graduated after scoring a team-high 15 points last year, the other three all return to once again pace the Rebels on the field. “Marshall, Espinoza, Mota, they all had the chance to leave for somewhere else but they choose to stay and honor their commitment to UNLV, and from what they gained in maturity and leadership and dealing with a hard situation, that will pay off over the next few years. I expect a very bright future for them.” It’s not just the aforementioned trio that has Ryerson optimistic about the 2011 season, but his overall increased depth on the team. “We have depth in the midfield this year, we have depth on the backline - that’s something I couldn’t call upon last year,” said Ryerson. The experience on the backline will also allow Ryerson to switch up the team’s formation this year to a 4-4-2, after playing three on the line in 2010.

FORWARDS With increased goal scoring a priority in 2011, the forwards will be looked at to answer the challenge. And the Rebels know they have one player that will step up to the call, first team All-MPSF junior Nick Marshall, who is one of the biggest keys to the team this year. “Marshall brings a lot of personality on and off the field, the kind of personality a team needs to have success, especially on offense with his confidence in his ability. He has great explosiveness over a short distance, allowing him to get open for goals,” said Ryerson. Marshall posted 19 points as a freshman and followed that with 12 points in 2011, off five goals and two assists. Two players looking to challenge for starting roles up top are sophomore Joaquin Rivas and freshman Salvador Bernal, both Las Vegas natives. Rivas recorded five points in 2010, including a golden goal, while Bernal was one of the surprises of the preseason. “Rivas has a powerful lleft foot and is already a threat to score for us when he’s on the field, while B Bernal is one of the quickest players on the team, while also possessing a ggood finishing touch,” said Ryerson. Also returning is junior Robert Garcia (15 starts and four points iin 2010), a quick and creative player on the attack, and sophomore Rory Emslie, who gives UNLV a a physical presence on the field at the position. E Another newcomer is Israel Lopez, the first-ever northern Nevada (Carson City) native in the UNLV men’s soccer program.

This is a group that developed very nicely over the past year, with rreturning starters and juniors Espinoza, Zach Kupfer and sophomore Jose Mendoza coming back after a year of playing together in the midfield. M ““These three players saw extensive playing time last year, we relied on ttheir ability to control the game on the field and expect to see them take m more control of the flow this season,” said Ryerson. Espinoza, a second-team All-MPSF pick in 2010 after scoring four ggoals and posting 10 points, is the playmaker of the group. “Once he started tto understand the importance of his role on the field, he really took over aand became a key player for us on the field last season,” said Ryerson. Zupfer meanwhile played more of a defensive role last season, but will be Z rreturning to an attacking position in 2011. That’s a spot he’s had success iin before for the Rebels, as he scored 13 points as a freshman off five goals aand three assists, showing why he’s considered one of the best finishers on the t team. The third returnee, Mendoza, was the only freshman to start in all 19 g games last year, and will be looked at as the Rebels’ holding midfielder this season after scoring one goal a season ago. The other returnee is sophomore Shane Panther, who saw limited time in seven games in 2010. The Rebels added one newcomer to the group, Julian Portugal of

2011 UNLV MEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

The Rebels have high hopes for an improved overall team defense in 2011, led by returning goalkeepers Ryan Howard (above) and Simon Cook. Las Vegas, a very technically gifted athlete with good vision on the field, and is a player Ryerson expects to challenge for significant playing time.

DEFENDERS This is the group Ryerson is most excited about. “This is easily the strongest backline we’ve had in the four years I’ve been involved on the coaching staff. It’s a collection of eight players that have great size and the ability to make plays in the air, and it’s really the first group of players who all bring a true defensive mentality to their game.” Leading the way is Mota, a junior and one of the tallest players on the team at 6-2. “Mota is becoming a true leader for us on the field, and he always gives us a scoring threat with his height for headers. He also possesses a good kick, and can strike the ball up to 60 yards.” Senior Richard Abrego is expected to see time on the line this season after playing up front his first three years. “Abrego works as hard as anyone during our training, and brings that effort onto the field every single game.” The Las Vegas native was fourth on the team in scoring last year with seven points (two goals, three assists). One player that redshirted in 2010 but has played his way into contention for a starting role after a strong spring and summer is freshman Kyle Mellies. “He really developed over the summer into a strong defender, and has shown the ability to close down on opponents,” said Ryerson. Sophomore Scott Brandon played in 14 games last year and is looking to challenge for the left back spot, while the other Rebel to see action in a game last year was sophomore Ryan Robertson, who was limited in 2010 by injuries.

Joining those five are a group of three freshmen, all of whom are expected to make an impact this season. Two are Las Vegas natives (Ricky Acero and Corey Ackley), while the third player is Connor Coletti from Sandy, Utah.

GOALKEEPERS Three goalies are on the roster this season, including two returnees from 2010, senior Simon Cook and sophomore Ryan Harding, and either one could get the nod as the starter this season. Both goalies have their own different positives, as Cook brings maturity and leadership on the field, while Howard is a more athletic goalkeeper. The two combined to post a 1.47 team GAA and three total shutouts. Joining that pair is freshman Aaron Stoddard from Sandy, Utah.

SCHEDULE UNLV begins the season on the road at Cal Poly on Aug. 27. That’s the first of five non-conference road games, while only two are at home this season - San Francisco and Green Bay in the UNLV Nike Invitational. The MPSF season will start up on Oct. 1 with a home contest against New Mexico, while this year’s league tournament will be held in Denver on Nov. 10-13. “It’s a tough schedule, especially playing so many Big West schools, that’s a conference that typically has several nationally and regionally ranked squads,” said Ryerson. “But it will challenge our team, and then we get into conference play, where our goal is the same as last year - to exceed expectations, to finish higher than 2010’s sixth-place record.

overtime upset over the Cardinal on Sept. 10, thanks to a golden goal from freshman Joaquin Rivas. The weekend ended with a loss at 18th-ranked California, but still left the Rebels with a 2-2 mark through the first two weekends. Next up was another two games away from Las Vegas, this time in the Green Bay Soccer Classic, and the Rebels would suffer a pair of tough 2-1 losses, at the hands of Green Bay and Robert Morris. Hoping to break the three-game losing streak, the squad returned home to host the UNLV Rebel Classic. The first matchup was also the first “Ryerson Cup” matchup, a contest between coaching brothers between

SIFUENTES

It was a season of change for the Rebels in 2010, as they had to make a switch at the top after four-year head coach Mario Sanchez left in January and several key players either graduated or transferred out before the next coach was named. By naming the Rebels’ replacement, the school had to look no further then its own past, as former UNLV standout Rich Ryerson was named as the fifth coach in the program’s history in April of 2010. Ryerson had spend the past three seasons as an assistant, and was ready for the challenge of taking over at the helm of his alma mater. Perhaps the biggest challenge was finding a starting 11 after seeing seven players transfer in the offseason before Ryerson was put in place, while the Rebels would also have to work with a new goalkeeper between the pipes. One thing working in UNLV’s favor though was the return of its top two scorers from the year before, forwards Nick Marshall and Stephen Sifuentes. And as expected, the duo were the biggest factors on the team in 2010, both offensively and in leadership as well. They turned in first team all-conference seasons while leading the Rebels to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament for the second straight year. Though the season started with a tough home loss to Valparaiso by a 1-0 score on Sept. 4, the Rebels quickly bounced back with an 8-1 rout of Alabama A&M on Sept. 6 in the second game of the UNLV Invitational, giving Ryerson his first career victory. UNLV followed up that win with one of its best games of the season, as it went on the road to Pac-10 member Stanford and pulled off a 2-1

UNLV’s Ryerson and Robbie Ryerson, UNLV Hall of Famer and coach of Mount St. Mary’s. The Rebels made sure their Ryerson came out on top with a 4-1 victory on Sept. 24. Junior Ricky Abrego was impressive in the victory, posting the game-winner as well as two assists. The second game of the tournament was against No. 18 UC Irvine, and UNLV dropped the contest 4-0 on Sept. 26. Conference play for the Rebels began on Oct. 1, and for the third time in nine games they dropped a 2-1 contest, this time in overtime at New Mexico. UNLV would return home with two big performances against the other two Mountain division members, taking down Air Force 1-0 on Oct. 8 off a score from sophomore Jonny Espinoza and earning a double-overtime 0-0 tie with Denver on Oct. 10. Facing the same teams the very next weekend in Colorado, UNLV could not top the Falcons and fell 2-0 on Oct. 15, but pulled off a 1-0 upset win at Denver on Oct. 17, thanks ONORS WARDS to sophomore defender Mike Mota’s first career NSCAA ALL-FAR WEST score. That win THIRD TEAM gave UNLV seven Stephen Sifuentes points in MPSF play, putting them MOUNTAIN PACIFIC in good shape SPORTS FEDERATION towards a berth in the conference tournament before taking on the other half of the league. HONORS UNLV looked to build on the momemtum of the Denver victory with a pair of home games, but that was quickly squashed with two tough losses, 2-1 to Cal State Bakersfield on Oct. 22 and a 2-0 setback to Seattle on Oct. 24. As only the top six teams in the league ALL-CONFERENCE advance to the MPSF tournament, things were not looking good for the Rebels with only three games left to play. FIRST TEAM With their backs to the wall though, the Rebels turned in their biggest weekend of Nick Marshall the season. It began with a huge 2-1 overtime victory at San Jose State. Sifuentes scored Stephen Sifuentes early in the game, while Nick Marshall posted a golden goal score, the second of his career, to lift UNLV to the win on Oct. 29, earning three points. The Rebels then picked up another point two days later, as on Halloween they went to Sacramento State and pulled out a 1-1 double-overtime tie with the Hornets. Though the regular season ended with a 3-2 loss at New Mexico, UNLV had wrapped up the sixth seed in the 2010 MPSF Tournament, and would open up play against third-seed New Mexico. In a tight contest, the Lobos would come out on top, claiming a one-goal victory for UNLV for the third time in 2010. Despite the first round loss, the Rebels finished the season with several positives from the 2010 campaign, which saw a total of four players earn All-MPSF honors. In addition to Marshall and Sifuentes on the first team, Espinoza was a second team selection, and Marshall Sifuentes Mota was named honorable mention. Sifuentes, who finished the season as the team’s leading scorer with team-highs in goals (six) and points (15) also earned all-region honors as well, Third Team All-Far West by NSCAA. Marshall was next on the squad with five SECOND TEAM goals and two assists for 12 points, while Espinoza also reached double-figures in points Jonny Espinoza with 10 off four goals and two assists. In goal for the Rebels were junior Simon Cook and Ryan Harding, and the two combined to post three total shutouts (including two HONORABLE MENTION over Denver, a 2010 NCAA participant) and a 1.47 GAA. The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) was established during the 1992-1993 season to serve the competitive needs of member institutions from the Big West, Pacific-10 and Western Athletic Conferences, as well as other selected universities in the western United States; and to provide championships competition for Division I intercollegiate Olympic sports in a conference setting. The founding principles on which the MPSF was originally formed were to provide enhanced competition and championship opportunities for sports without conference affiliation; to contain the costs of competition; and to ensure the survival of sports impacted by Title IX and other fiscal pressures. The Federation has also served as an incubator for emerging women’s sports and as a safe harbor for sports impacted by conference realignments. Since its inaugural season the Federation has seen its primary conference membership grow by the addition of the Mountain West and West Coast Conferences and their respective member institutions, as well as the addition of women’s water polo, women’s gymnastics, women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s swimming. As a testament to its viability, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation continues to successfully navigate the ever-changing sea of college sports by fostering contraction and expansion of its sports portfolio to meet the dynamic needs of its members. As the MPSF begins its 20th season in 2011-2012 and continues its legacy of championship competition, it affirms the vision of its founders and the relevance of its three founding principles, particularly during today’s tumultuous economic times. In 2011-2012, the MPSF will sponsor competition in 11 intercollegiate Olympic sports, adding men’s and women’s swimming for the first time, while serving approximately 1,800 studentathletes on 98 teams from 39 universities in 13 western states. All MPSF teams compete at the NCAA Division I level in men’s soccer, men’s and women’s water polo, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s gymnastics, men’s and women’s swimming, women’s lacrosse and men’s volleyball. MPSF champions are eligible to compete in NCAA Championships with MPSF men’s soccer,

UNLV

Combining the excitement of an urban location with the charm of a traditional campus, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas offers students a full educational and social experience. Just over five decades old, UNLV has maintained a healthy rate of growth in enrollment, programs and scholastic excellence as part of the eight-component Nevada System of Higher Education. Located in the heart of one of the world’s most vibrant and dynamic cities, UNLV has matured along with the Las Vegas area. With enrollment more than doubling the last decade, the tremendous growth has meant a flurry of construction resulting in a campus setting boasting academic and athletic facilities second to none. Steadily becoming a traditional residential university, UNLV provides on-campus housing for more than 2,000 students. A variety of student clubs and organizations along with 26 Greek organizations supplement the social development of students. From within its 15 schools and colleges, including the William S. Boyd School of Law, UNLV is also becoming a leading research institution of the West. The school’s scientific, social science, and business programs attract millions of dollars in research grants annually to fund projects in desert biology, nuclear waste transportation, laser physics, public opinion surveys and many others. In addition to traditional student programs, UNLV serves diverse local, national and international communities through its Educational Outreach Division, offering Summer Term, Continuing Education and Distance Education programs enrolling more than 53,000 students annually.

Opened in 1957 as the southern regional division of the University of Nevada with a total of 28 students, UNLV now is home to more than 28,000 students coming from every county in Nevada, all 50 U.S. states and 88 countries. Much of UNLV’s tremendous expansion is the result of support from the Nevada Legislature and the state’s taxpayers. Private donors have played an important role as well. These gifts support new facilities and programs and, most important, provide the scholarship incentives that bring Nevada’s best and brightest student scholars to campus. UNLV operates an on-campus Center for Business and Economic Research, Center for Economic Education, Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies (in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency), Desert Biology Research Center, Center for Survey Research, Nuclear Waste Transportation Research Center and other research and public-service centers. Offering 108 undergraduate programs and 137 graduate tracts, UNLV graduated a class of nearly 6,000 last year. The University operates on a semester system and is a member of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the Council of Graduate Schools, the American Council of Education and the Western College Association. All of the University’s academic programs are fully accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, and many programs have received further accreditation from independent national accreditation bodies.

PRESIDENT PRESID NT IDENT PRESIDENT ENT dr. neal

SMATRESK

Dr. Neal J. Smatresk was appointed President of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on Aug. 6, 2009. His career at UNLV began in 2007 as executive vice president and provost, where he was responsible for the leadership and administration of all academic and research programs, spanning 15 colleges and two professional schools. In the last four years, UNLV has hit a number of milestones and academic achievements despite challenging times. Smatresk emphasizes how vitally important UNLV is to improving educational access and success for diverse students, spurring the research and innovation needed for diversification of Southern Nevada’s economic base, and supplying both an educated work force and critically needed services for the community and region. A testament to his vision is UNLV’s partnership with the highly respected Brookings Institution to establish Brookings Mountain West, the national think tank’s first foray this side of the Mississippi. UNLV completed a recordbreaking $537 million fundraising campaign, with Smatresk and his leadership team garnering a $12.6 million donation from the Engelstad Family Foundation to support the largest active scholarship program in the university’s history. Under Smatresk’s direction, UNLV established the Academic Success Center, which is living up to its name by helping students find the right majors, succeed in their classes, and graduate on time. Student athletes are advised through the center, and they have never done better in the classroom. In addition to his teaching and leadership roles, Smatresk has championed kindergarten to doctorate science outreach efforts and teacher professional development, participating in a number of programs throughout his career that focus on science, technology, engineering and math career development. UNLV’s president is a scientist by training and received his Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1980. Following post-doctoral work at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Smatresk joined the University of Texas, Arlington (UTA) department of biology in 1982. In his 22 years at UTA, he served as chair of biology and later dean of science, until his appointment as the chief academic officer at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2004. During his time there, Hawaii’s flagship university entered the ranks of the top 25 federally funded institutions, gained three National Academy of Science members, and received recognition from the Chinese Ministry of Education as a Confucius Institute, an honor shared by only 11 other U.S. institutions. Smatresk has received numerous teaching awards, and his research in cardiorespiratory physiology has resulted in more than 50 papers and book chapters and grants from the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health. His undergraduate alma mater, Gettysburg College, awarded him its Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award in 2011.

ATHLETIC TIC DIRECTO DIRECTOR RECTOR RECTO ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

LIVENGOOD

Bringing with him a wealth of experience and the reputation as one of the nation’s top administrators, Jim Livengood was introduced as UNLV’s 11th full-time Director of Athletics on Dec. 17, 2009. Livengood wasted no time getting to work, as less than two weeks later he hired Bobby Hauck as the 10th head coach in Rebel football history. Just three months after that it was a nounced that a new, state-of-the-art basketball practice facility, the Mendenhall Center, would be built, with construction starting later in the year. Livengood came to UNLV following a successful tenure of more than 15 years at the University of Arizona where he oversaw an athletics program that annually competed for championships not only in the Pac-10 Conference but also at a national level, maintained a high academic standard for its student-athletes and continually operated its $43 million budget in the black. His fiscal leadership helped Arizona remain one of the lone black-ink athletics programs among a small handful of institutions that rely exclusively on generated funds and do not receive state-appropriated monies. During his time in Tucson, he served as the Paciic-10 Conference president, chair of the Pac-10 Athletic

Directors Revenue Sharing Committee and a member of the conference's Bowl Committee and Basketball Tournament Subcommittee. He also was a member of the Rose Bowl Management Committee, the NCAA Fellows program, NACDA President, and chair of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee, on which he served five years. His work at Arizona and its extesion on the national level earned him an Athletic Director of the Year Award from the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics in 2006 for Division I-A. Livengood initiated Campaign Arizona, which raised more than $130 million for athletic facility improvements and endowments while the Wildcats maintained a top-25 competitive record in the NACDA Directors' Cup (formerly Sears Cup), including high rankings of sixth in 1993-94, fourth in 1994-95, seventh in 1995-96, sixth in both 1996-97 and 1997-98 and ninth in 2001-02. That record reflects success throughout Arizona's broad-based program, highlighted by participation in the 1994 and 2001 NCAA Men's Final Four and champions of the 1997 NCAA Men's National Basketball Tournament. Ar zona also won the 1994, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2006 and 2007 NCAA Women's Softball College World Series titles, the 1996 and 2000 NCAA Women's Golf titleand the 2008 men's and women's NCAA Swimming Championships. UA's student-athlete graduation rate continued to be historically higher than that of the general student body rate during his tenure at UA. Nearly 100 student-athletes earned conference or regional all-academic honors, and 20 percent of UA student-athletes attained honors-level cumulative grade point averages. Livengood is a member of the NCAA Fellows Program to mentor new athletic directors, has served as a member of the NCAA Peer Review Team from 1994-99, the NCAA Gender Equity Task Force, and the Women's Commi ttee on Athletics. He has been a member of the NACDA Preseason Football Games Committee

since 2000 and was a member of the NACDA Strategic Planning Committee from 1999-2001. He served as NACDA president in 1998-1999, and in 1999 was named Division I-A Athletic Director of the Year. He is also a member of the Division 1-A Athletic Directors Associttion, having served as president of that association in 1998. Livengood spent six years as the Athletics Director at Washington State University from 1988-93 where he developed what is still widely regarded as a model gender equity program. In addition he laid the groundwork for a student-athlete wellness center that is regarded as one of the finest in the nation. Livengood began his administrative career in 1980 as the Associate Director for Development and Public Relations at Washington State before becoming the Athletics Director at Southern Illinois, a position he held until returning to Washington State. Born March 28, 1945, in Walla Walla, Wash., he received his bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University in 1968 and completed his fifth-year education requirement for teaching certification at Central Washington University in 1972. He taught and served as an assistant football coach and track coach at Moses Lake High School in Washington in 1968-69, and as head football and basketball coach and counselor at Ephrata High School in Washington from 1972-80 before moving into athletics administration. Jim and his wife, Linda, have two grown children, Michelle, a lawyer in Memphis, and Jeremy, who resides in Phoenix. Both children are University of Arizona graduates. Michelle earned her law degree in May 2000 and Jeremy graduated in December 1999. The Livengoods are the proud grandparents of twin daughters, Emma and Isabella, born to Michelle and husband, Jack Murphy, in March 2009.

HALL F FAM FAMEE HALL OF OF FAME Class of 2010

Six different Rebel sports were represented when the UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame most recently welcomed new members on Oct. 1, 2010. Five former Rebel standout players, one head coach and a distinguished contributor joined two record-setting teams to form the Class of 2010 that was honored in ceremonies at the M Resort and then again at the UNLV football game the following evening. Also being honored that night was former Rebel football player and current CEO of the Palms, George Maloof Jr., who received the inaugural Silver Rebel Award. Born in 1987, UNLV’s Athletics Hall of Fame is now 105 members strong. Under the hall’s bylaws, former student-athletes must have completed their eligibility at least 10 years earlier to be selected. Coaches and administrators must have stopped working at the University five years previous. The hall's next class will be announced in 2012.

JEREMY ANDERSON (1996-2000) was prolific performer on the golf course and in the classroom and is the only athlete in school history to be a three-time All-American and three-time academic All-American. A member of head coach Dwaine Knight’s 1998 National Championship squad, Anderson had the unusual honor of being voted player of the year in two different conferences (1999 Western Athletic and 2000 Mountain West). DANIEL BARBER (1989-92) is one of only two All-Americans in Rebel soccer history, as he was a Freshman All-American in 1989 and then a third team selection two seasons later. JULIE CRANDALL (1995-98) is regarded as the best catcher in UNLV’s storied softball history. A multipleseason All-American, she started behind the plate for the top team in school history, helping the 1995 Rebels to a tie for third place at the Women’s College World Series. NICK GARRITANO (1991-94) was arguably the nation’s best place-kicker as a senior and he left as UNLV’s second-leading scorer in history with 240 points. RYAN LUDWICK (1997-99) played three seasons at UNLV before becoming the fourth-highest draft pick in program history. The 1997 First Team Freshman All-American was a two-time preseason All-American before going on to an All-Star MLB career. The 1994 UNLV FOOTBALL TEAM is one of two in school history to win a conference championship and head coach Jeff Horton’s squad went on to rout Central Michigan 52-24 in Las Vegas Bowl III. The 1985 UNLV MEN’S SOCCER TEAM was the winningest group in program history, setting multiple school records, including most wins and fewest losses as head coach Barry Barto’s squad finished 18-2-2 and ranked fourth. HEAD COACH DR. LARRY EASLEY (Posthumous) (1992-03) coached the UNLV men’s tennis team longer than anyone in history, led UNLV to three Big West Conference championships and produced four of UNLV’s five all-time men’s All-Americans, including two individual national champions. DISTINGUISHED CONTRIBUTOR BOB MENDENHALL is the owner and chief executive officer of the Las Vegas Paving Corporation. A longtime supporter of the UNLV program, Mendenhall most recently became a major part of a group that is building and donating a new multi-million dollar practice facility for the Runnin’ Rebels.
