FACILITIES

PETER JOHANN MEMORIAL FIELD The dedication of Peter Johann Memorial Soccer Field during the 1983 season marked a special occasion for all those who were involved with the building of UNLV’s first on-campus soccer facility. Despite the fact that UNLV soccer has been around since 1974, Rebel teams in the past never truly had a “home field” to call their own. And, when former men’s soccer head coach Barry Barto assumed his position prior to the 1982 season, building an on-campus soccer field became a priority. Barto approached then-athletics director Brad Rothermel to work out a solution to the problem and the two settled on the current location, where the old softball field had previously existed. Once the site was finalized, a huge community effort was instrumental in the building of the soccer field. The field is named after the late son of Kenneth F. Johann, a real estate businessman who has lived in Las Vegas for more than 40 years. Johann has been a strong 4

supporter of Rebel soccer and he and his wife, Alice, set up a scholarship fund in memory of their son. Thus, Johann was more than happy to be a part of the overall community effort. Johann Field played host to the 1983 ISAA Senior Bowl All-Star Game where the West team posted a 4-0 victory. Numerous international matches have also been played on its pitch and it is also the site of the annual UNLV/Nike Soccer Classic for both the men’s and women’s squads. The facility has also played host to three Las Vegas Soccer Spectaculars. The inaugural contest in 2002 featured the WUSA’s San Jose CyberRays and the San Diego Spirit, while in the spring of 2003, the Boston Breakers took on San Jose. The final spectacular was in March of 2003, between UNLV and the Mexican Olympic Team, who had just claimed a spot in the 2004 Athens Games. In the spring of 2007, a sellout crowd watched the first-ever MLS contest on the UNLV campus, as Real 2011 UNLV WOMEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

PETER JOHANN MEMORIAL FIELD Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids played to a 0-0 draw in an exhibition contest on March 31. The women’s soccer team reached its 50th victory on its home field in the quarterfinals of the 2005 MWC Tournament and three days later won the tournament championship, the first-ever won by a UNLV squad at Johann Field, with a 1-0 overtime victory over New Mexico in the title game. The women’s team has hosted a total of four MWC championships at Johann Field, and made the championship game in two of the four tournaments (2001 and 2005). With the addition of endzone seats in 1997, the grandstands now offer seating for approximately 2,500 spectators in an open seating arrangement, and the facility boasts natural grass, a press box, and lights for night matches. The facility was most recently upgraded during the summer of 2006, as a $300,000 renovation led to a new irrigation system as well as new sod and grass for the field. Generally regarded as one of the top college soccer facilities in the West, Johann Field celebrates its 29th season in 2011.

The MWC Tournament has been held at UNLV in 2001, 2002, 2005 and 2008. WWW.UNLVREBELS.COM

SPORTS MEDICINE

Providing the best possible preventative and rehabilitative care, the UNLV soccer athletic training staff is headed by Director of Athletic Training Kyle Wilson. The trainer for this year’s team is Mike Seipol. Made possible by a generous gift of $1.5 million by Marilyn and Si Redd, the Lied Athletic complex’s athletic training facility incorporates the total scope of sports medicine over an 8,500-square-foot area. Aside from five staff offices, a rehabilitation room houses a dozen pieces of equipment including Cybex stationary bicycles, stair machines and treadmills, all under a natural skylight.

The largest area features a dozen tables to offer student-athletes various treatments throughout the day. Taping, padding and bracing all take place in another all-inclusive room. Finally, an aquatic therapy room features three above-ground whirlpools surrounding a 10-feet deep pool for rehabilitative exercises. All of these features make it possible for UNLV student-athletes to rehabilitate injuries without ever needing to leave the confines of the Lied Athletic Complex. Mike Sepiol Other amenities include a physician’s office Athletic Trainer and exam room to provide daily medical service for student-athletes. A drug-testing facility also is part of the complex. This expedites medical care because the student-athletes’ health care is self-contained. Also, UNLV’s academic program and its student athletic training benefit from a sports medicine library, study room and conference facility.

COMMUNITY SERVICE The Boys and Girls Club of Las Vegas received a special visit from the women’s soccer team on March 22, 2011. The Rebels spread their knowledge of the game and most importantly, their passion for the sport to an enthusiastic bunch.

UNLV Athletics partnered with After-School All-Stars Las Vegas and Special Olympics Nevada to host a clinic in support of Global Youth Service Day on April 16, 2011. The women’s soccer team, along with members of the football and baseball teams, led the drills at each sports station and created a memorable day for the nearly 300 children in attendance.

The women’s soccer team volunteered at Opportunity Village, an organization focused on enhancing the lives of people with severe intellectual and related disabilities. The student-athletes assisted workers with mass mailings and other tasks and later enjoyed the chance to introduce many of the clients to the sport of soccer by conducting a mini clinic.

The women’s soccer team gathered at the valley’s food hub, Three Square, to participate in the “BackPack for Kids” Program which serves to feed valley children who lack an adequate food supply over the weekend. The Rebels demonstrated their ability to work as a team and provided hope for hungry children by efficiently filling 1,260 backpacks during the visit. WWW.UNLVREBELS.COM

2011 SEASON OUTLOOK Rebels ready for Year Two of the Klein era

The Rebels had two question marks entering the 2010 season - how would they adjust to a coaching change, and would they bounce back from a disappointing result the previous year. The answer to both questions was a resounding yes. UNLV doubled its win total from the year before, as in the first year under Jennifer Klein as head coach, the Rebels jumped out to a 5-1 mark on the way to an 11-8-1 record. They also made a return trip to the Mountain West postseason tournament after a year away, and reached the semifinals before falling on a late goal in double-overtime to New Mexico. “I felt we did very well last season, we achieved our goal of returning to the conference tournament, and we showed that the program is getting back to what its’ been in the past, a championship contending program,” said Klein. “With the success we had in 2010, that has laid the groundwork for coming into this season to challenge for the Mountain West title.” Though there was no doubt the Rebels got their swagger back, there is one big question entering this season, and it deals with the offense. UNLV set new school records in 2010 with 38 goals and 105 total points. However, 26 of the 38 goals (68 percent) and 62 of the 105 points (59 percent) came from its three now-departed starting forwards. That includes Ashleigh Shoughro, who led the Mountain West last year and set new UNLV single-season records with 14 goals and 31 points. As Klein notes, finding and developing other options on offense is going to be the key to the 2011 campaign. “We lost most of our offensive attack from last year, but I feel confident we have the talent to step up and fill that void,” said Klein. “One difference this year is it might not be one or two players to get the majority of goals, we are going to have to make it a team effort. Now that they will have the opportunity for more playing time, I feel we have several players on the team that are capable

20

of doing that. I also expect several of our freshmen will make an impact offensively.” Another strength the 2010 squad had was leadership. Several threeand four-year starters graduated in the offseason, including the last class to win a conference title (2007). “We lost a core group of leaders that was key to our success both on and off the field with their experience and leadership,” said Klein. “But we feel that they made a good impression on their younger teammates and they passed along their knowledge. That should help us keep the standard of play at UNLV at the high levels we expect. “We still return a mix of seniors and juniors that have contributed from their first days on campus. They understand they can’t just sit back, they need to stand up and take a leadership position from day one.” FORWARDS This is the most inexperienced group on the squad. And as Klein called it, the four forwards have a “season of opportunity” ahead of them, as they are all looking to become full-time starters for the first time in their careers. UNLV does return a pair of seniors up front, Elizabeth Billington and Jenna Larkin. They combined for 37 appearances last year, and both scored one goal each. In addition, Larken has experience in posting goals in key games, including one in a MW Tournament victory over New Mexico as a freshman, while her three goals off the bench were a team high in 2009. “Both seniors have played significant minutes for us in the past, and we expect them to lean on that experience as they look to lead up front this season,” said Klein. “Jenna is also a good target forward for us and is good in the air, while Elizabeth is a creative player

2011 UNLV WOMEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

2011 SEASON OUTLOOK with the ball.” The other returnee is sophomore Jenn Wolfe, who appeared in 17 games as a freshman and posted two assists. “Jenn is a very strong forward with the ability to post up in the box, and has an accurate long shot as well,” noted Klein. New to the forwards this year is freshman Jenna Howerton (Colorado Springs, Colo.), who is similar in style to Wolfe and will fight for a starting role. MIDFIELDERS “Our midfielders this season are a very technical, creative and hardworking group,” said Klein. While she counts on their ability to disrupt the other team’s attack, Klein feels that this year she will need for them to become more involved in the offense, and hopefully to provide more goals to help assist the inexperienced forwards. Leading the way is junior Macy Jo Harrison. After a year at Oregon State, Harrison had an impressive debut for the Rebels in 2010, as she finished fourth on the team with 12 points (four goals, four assists), and tallied two game-winners on the year as well. “Macy Jo was a good addition to our team last year,” said Klein. “She is aggressive with the ball, a strong passer and has the ability to score from long distance, which she did several times last year.” Another returning starter is senior Katherine Orellana, who had four assists in 2010. Sophomore Courtney Botelho, meanwhile, should see more playing time this season after making two starts last year. “Katherine and Courtney are both technical, pressure players that work hard on the ball, and have a good offensive knowledge as well,” said Klein. Junior Julie Owens, a strong ball winner, also returns to the midfield corp and could fight for a starting role. Adding depth are seniors Hailey Garrison and Danielle O’Neil, and sophomore Amanda Kaufman. New to the group in 2011 are two freshmen from Colorado, each with their own positives. Erica Meier (Boulder, Colo.) is a good passer with a strong shot, while Denali Murnan (Arvada, Colo.), at 5-11, gives the Rebels height in the midfield, and is a strong ball-winner and attacker. DEFENSE This is easily the most experienced group on the 2011 squad, as three starters return from last year’s team that posted a total of six shutouts. Leading the way are three of the team’s four captains, seniors Brittney Flores and Justine Sauder and junior Caitlin Allen. The trio combined for 59 starts last year, and are joined by senior Adrianna Guida (14 appearances in 2010). “This is a very experienced group, they know the game, play very smart, and put great on the ball pressure for us,” noted Klein. Allen is the team’s general on the field, keeping the backline organized while also using her pace to start the attack from the back. Sauder brings energy and a good ability in the air to the role, while Flores is a fast one-on-one defender. Guida meanwhile is one of the fastest players on the team, which helps get her more involved in the attack. The other two returnees to the defense are junior Jennifer Lutjens and sophomore Jackie Tillotson. UNLV will have three freshmen defenders, Las Vegas native Faith Johannes, and a pair of players from Tempe, Ariz., Kristin Sankey and Samantha Weber. “All three of our freshmen come from very good defensive club teams, and I feel that should help give them an easy transition to our backline,” said Klein.

freshman season and would finish with a 1.45 GAA with 73 saves and three shutouts on the season. “Kylie is our go-to-player in the net. She gained lots of experience last year and playing for her club team this summer, and we are expecting another strong year from her,” said Klein. The Rebels have three more goalies on their roster, starting with junior Ashlee Dela Cruz, who appeared in three games and played 104 minutes, while posting two saves and not allowing a goal. Also in the net is sophomore Nicole Cipriano and redshirt freshman Kelli McCracken. SCHEDULE When one looks at this year’s Rebel schedule, two things jump out. The first, of the 13 non-conference games, eight are away from Las Vegas, including a stretch of six straight. This was done for a purpose, according to Klein. “I wanted a tougher schedule for our team, because if we want to reach the NCAA Tournament, I don’t want us to have to rely on winning the Mountain West tournament and automatic bid. But to play tougher teams for a chance at an at-large bid, we had to go on the road, so that’s what we’re doing.” The season begins with a pair of home games against UC Riverside and UC Santa Barbara in the UNLV Rebel Classic on Aug. 19 and 21. Then starts six games away from home, with the highlights including contests at Oregon, at future conference member Nevada, Reno, and back-to-back games at Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton. The other change this year is in the conference slate, as for the first time in the program’s history, MW departers BYU and Utah are missing from the schedule, while Boise State is in its first year as a league member. “With the changes in the conference, I feel like everything has been opened up and is fair game,” said Klein. “We don’t have someone as a lead dog far ahead of the rest of the league, so that should make for an exciting race, and I hope that we’re right in the middle of it.” UNLV’s first Mountain West game comes on Sept. 30 at home against TCU, and the regular season finale is on Oct. 28 against San Diego State, also in Las Vegas. This year’s league tournament will be held in Albuquerque, N.M., from Nov. 2-6.

HARRISON

GOALKEEPERS Last year marked the first time UNLV ever started the season without an experienced goalkeeper, but the Rebels quickly found out they would have no concerns at the position. After winning the starting role in preseason practices, Kylie Wassell started all 20 games in her WWW.UNLVREBELS.COM

2010 YEAR-IN-REVIEW There was a lot of uncertainty entering the 2010 season for the UNLV women’s soccer team. Already coming off a disappointing five-win season, the Rebels would have to play for a new head coach after Kat Mertz left for a job after five years for Texas. The good news, however, was that it was a familiar face that took over at the helm of the program. Jennifer Klein was named the fourth head women’s soccer coach in UNLV history in June after two years as an assistant on the coaching staff. The youngest women’s soccer head coach in the nation, Klein turned out to be just what the Rebels needed to turn around the program and regain their winning tradition. Another positive the Rebels had in their favor was the return of a healthy Ashleigh Shoughro to the squad. After recording a schoolrecord 28 points during her sophomore season in 2008, during which the Rebels won 11 games, she was plagued by injuries throughout her junior year. That led to just five total points and only two goals from the team’s top offensive threat. Klein knew that for the Rebels to have a successful season, getting Shoughro back to her previous form was key. But she knew that just as important was improving the team’s chemistry on the field, especially with the offense, as UNLV had managed only 15 goals in 2009, the lowest in school history. Well, after her first year at the helm of the Rebels, it can be considered mission accomplished for the recovery of the Rebels on offense. Thanks to an early run of goals by Shoughro (six in the first three games), UNLV jumped out to its best start in school history at 5-1. UNLV scored four or more goals three times in the first six games, including a 4-2 win against Colorado and a 1-0 home victory over Oregon. The Rebels would fi finish nish t season scoring a schoolthe record 38 goals, w while Shoughro shattered several season and c career records.

The season started at UC Riverside and the Rebels started a freshman in goal for the first time in school history. Having turned 17 just a day before, freshman Kylie Wassell showed she was up to the task of being the Rebels’ starting netminder, stopping seven shots to earn UNLV a 1-0 win on Aug. 20. That performance also earned Wassell MW Player of the Week honors. The Rebels then returned home to host the Las Vegas Invitational, and blew away the competition to improve to 3-0. Shoughro set a school record with four goals in a 5-2 win over Albany (Aug. 27), and added two more in a 4-0 win at Louisiana-Monroe (Aug. 29) in the second game of the weekend. Her six-goal weekend was rewarded with her first MW Player of the Week mention of the season. first loss off The next weekend saw UNLV suffer its first the year, 2-1 against Drake (Sept. 4), but the Rebels rebounded to post a two-goal win over Colorado (Sept. 6) in the second game off the Denver Invitational. 2010 YEAR-IN-REVIEW returned to host the UNLV Nike Classic and opened that two-game event with a 1-0 victory over Oregon (Sept. 10). Two tough losses followed - one-goal setbacks to Cal State Northridge (Sept. 12) and Long Beach State (Sept. 17) - before the Rebels bounced back with a 2-1 win over UC Davis (Sept. 19) to complete play in the UNLV Rebel Classic. ONORS WARDS The next weekend also marked the end of non-conference play for UNLV and the Rebels made sure to end on a winning note with two straight shutouts in the Air Force Invitational, 5-0 over VMI on Sept. 24, and 1-0 over Weber State on Sept. 26. The back-to-back wins earned NSCAA All-Pacific Region two Rebels weekly MW awards, as Shoughro was the Offensive Player of the Week and junior Third Team Caitlin Allen Defensive Player of the Week. The momentum from the win streak did not carry over into the start of Mountain West Ashleigh Shoughro play, as the Rebels suffered two straight losses to begin the league season - at home to New Mexico and at TCU. UNLV would rebound with a 3-2 win over Wyoming (Oct. 14) thanks to a game-winner from Shoughro (which also led to another MW weekly honor), and the Rebels added a 3-0 victory over Air Force (Oct. 16). Next up was the final matchup with BYU as MW rivals and the Rebels nearly pulled off a big upset. Sophomore Macy Jo Harrison posted an early goal before the 13th-ranked Cougars tied the score just before the end of the first half. Despite being outshot by a large margin, Wassell would not allow another goal, and UNLV would come out of Provo with a 1-1 tie, which assured it a spot in the conference tournament. The Rebels dropped their final two games of the regular season, both on the road, and entered the MW Tournament as the fifth seed after finishing with seven points in league play. All-Mountain West UNLV opened up the tournament against fourth-seeded Utah, and gained revenge for the regular-season loss with an impressive 4-1 victory. That put the Rebels into the semifinals against First Team New Mexico, and UNLV nearly pulled off the upset in a game similar to the tie against BYU. Ashleigh Shoughro As they did against the Cougars, the Rebels went ahead early on an Allen header in the 11th Second Team minute. New Mexico would tie the game in the final minute of the first half, however, and the Amanda Forrester contest would go into double-overtime. Minutes away from a possible penalty kick shootout situation, in which UNLV has traditionally MWC Players of the Week dominated in MW tournament history, the Rebels instead saw their season end when Offense the Lobos scored a golden goal in the 106th Shoughro - Aug. 30 Ashleigh minute. For advancing to the semifinals, the Shoughro Sept. 27 Ashleigh Rebels landed two on the all-tournament Shoughro Oct. 18 Ashleigh team - Shoughro and Allen. Despite the semifinal loss, Defense there’s no doubt the season was Kylie Wassell - Aug. 23 a success as UNLV doubled its Caitlin Allen - Sept. 27 win total from the previous year, finishing at 11-8-1. Individually, Shoughro left UNLV with her CoSIDA Academic All-District name all over the record book. Second Team She finished the season with 31 Caitlin Allen points, breaking her own previous school record of 28, while her 14 goals was players. also a school record, breaking the previous mark of 11 held by her and two other play all-time at She finished her career with 64 points in just three seasons, ranking her fourth all-tim UNLV, while her 27 goals broke the previous record of 25 held by Annii Magliulo and Anita Pedford. different Shoughro also became the first Rebel to earn all-region honors in two diffe seasons as she was named second team All-Pacific, and the second-team honor was the while highest ever by a Rebel. She was named First Team All-Mountain West as well, w senior Amanda Forrester was a second-team selection after finishing second on the team with a career-high 16 points (six goals, four assists). Also finishing in double-figgures assists) for points in the season was sophomore Colette Jepson with 15 (six goals, three ass and Harrison (four goals, four assists). Wassell finished the season with a 1.45 GAA and an 73 included saves in goal, and added three solo shutouts. Other awards during the season inclu the Rebels receiving the 2010 NSCAA Team Academic Award for having a total tteam GPA of at least a 3.0. Allen also was named Academic All-District third team.

THE MOUNTAIN WEST THIS IS THE MOUNTAIN WEST From its inception in 1999, the Mountain West has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics, while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. Progressive in its approach, the MW continues to cultivate opportunities for student-athletes to compete at the highest level, while fostering academic achievement and sportsmanship. Now in its 13th year, the MW has been assertive in its involvement with the NCAA governance structure and has taken a leadership role in the overall administration of intercollegiate athletics. The Mountain West is noted for its geographic diversity. Some of the most beautiful terrain and landscapes in the nation can be found within Mountain West boundaries, including the majestic Rocky Mountain range, which borders three MW institutions (Air Force, newest member Boise State and Colorado State). The high plains of Wyoming (elevation 7,220 feet – the highest Division I campus in the nation) contrast with the desert city of Las Vegas (the fastest growing metropolitan area in the West) and the Pacific Ocean locale of San Diego State. The southwestern flavor of New Mexico complements the western heritage and culture of Fort Worth, Texas, home of TCU. ACHIEVEMENTS The MW has produced 708 All-America selections among its 19 sports in the last 12 years, including a league-record 80 All-America honorees in 2010-11. A total of 118 MW studentathletes have also earned Academic All-America accolades. The MW has sent at least 30 teams to NCAA postseason events each of the past 12 years. Mountain West teams have captured three NCAA team championship. Additionally, the MW has produced 27 NCAA individual national champions in the sports of men’s golf, men’s cross country, and men’s and women’s indoor track & field and outdoor track & field. Mountain West members have participated in 46 bowl games under the league umbrella, including four appearances in BCS games. The MW has earned 55 postseason bids in men’s basketball, including 29 NCAA Tournament appearances and two NIT Final Four berths. MW women’s basketball has tallied 55 postseason slots, including 30 NCAA bids, five Sweet 16 appearances and one Elite Eight berth since 2000. In women’s volleyball, the MW has had 33 NCAA bids with eight Sweet 16 berths and one Elite Eight appearance. Women’s soccer has earned 25 NCAA bids since 1999, with BYU advancing to the Sweet 16 in 2000 and the Elite Eight in 2003.

MOUNTAIN WEST QUICK FACTS Founded: July 1, 1999 Members: Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, TCU, UNLV, Wyoming Team NCAA Championships: 3 Individual NCAA Championships: 27 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Winners: 35 Academic All-America Selections: 118 All-America Selections: 708 YEAR IN REVIEW From the gridiron to the diamond, Mountain West teams enjoyed an outstanding year in 2010-11. For the third consecutive year, the MW sent a record five football teams to bowl games and finished with a 4-1 (.800) mark in postseason play and claimed the 2010-11 Bowl Challenge Cup, becoming the only conference to win the trophy four times since the award’s inception in 2002-03. Two MW teams were ranked in the final BCS Standings and USA Today/ESPN Coaches polls for the third straight year. TCU’s No. 3 BCS ranking marked the highest finish by a non-automatic-qualifying team in the final BCS Standings, Three men’s basketball teams (San Diego State, BYU, UNLV) represented the Mountain West in the 2011 NCAA Tournament, marking the 11th time in the last 12 years the Conference has sent multiple teams to the Big Dance. SDSU and BYU advanced to the Sweet Sixteen, the first time the league had multiple teams make the round. In women’s basketball, BYU won the MW regular-season title, while Utah captured the MW Tournament crown and earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. In women’s soccer, BYU and New Mexico earned bids to the NCAA Tournament. The Cougars earned the league’s automatic bid after clinching their sixth MW Tournament title, while the MW regular-season champion Lobos made their first NCAA appearance by virtue of an at-large invitation. UNLV MW CHAMPIONSHIPS IN 2010-11 • Men’s Swimming & Diving Regular Season/Tournament • Women’s Tennis Regular Season

COMMISSIONER CRAIG THOMPSON Craig Thompson was the Mountain West’s first employee when he was named Commissioner on Oct. 15, 1998. Ever since, Thompson has navigated the newest NCAA Division I conference through the ever-changing landscape of intercollegiate athletics. As the league enters its 13th season of competition in 2011-12, Thompson continues to create and improve the opportunities for Mountain West institutions and student-athletes to be successful both academically and athletically. He has been instrumental in negotiating nearly $230 million in television revenue and has been an innovator in the postseason bowl structure as MW teams have participated in five inaugural bowl games. Thompson also has positioned the Mountain West for the future with the additions of Boise State University on July 1, 2011, and California State University, Fresno and the University of Nevada, Reno on July 1, 2012. His leadership and vision have helped the conference enhance its television revenue and exposure through revolutionary agreements with CBS Sports Network and Comcast to become the first major collegiate athletic conference to launch a dedicated sports channel featuring exclusive programming around its athletic programs. Prior to his current role, Thompson served as the commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference for nearly eight years and as the only commissioner of the American South Conference before a merger of the two leagues in 1991. Thompson graduated from the University of Minnesota with an undergraduate degree in journalism. He and his wife, Carla, have a son (Ted) and a daughter (Emma).

UNLV

Combining the excitement of an urban location with the charm of a traditional campus, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas offers students a full educational and social experience. Just over five decades old, UNLV has maintained a healthy rate of growth in enrollment, programs and scholastic excellence as part of the eight-component Nevada System of Higher Education. Located in the heart of one of the world’s most vibrant and dynamic cities, UNLV has matured along with the Las Vegas area. With enrollment more than doubling the last decade, the tremendous growth has meant a flurry of construction resulting in a campus setting boasting academic and athletic facilities second to none. Steadily becoming a traditional residential university, UNLV provides on-campus housing for more than 2,000 students. A variety of student clubs and organizations along with 26 Greek organizations supplement the social development of students. From within its 15 schools and colleges, including the William S. Boyd School of Law, UNLV is also becoming a leading research institution of the West. The school’s scientific, social science, and business programs attract millions of dollars in research grants annually to fund projects in desert biology, nuclear waste transportation, laser physics, public opinion surveys and many others. In addition to traditional student programs, UNLV serves diverse local, national and international communities through its Educational Outreach Division, offering Summer Term, Continuing Education and Distance Education programs enrolling more than 53,000 students annually.

Much of UNLV’s tremendous expansion is the result of support from the Nevada Legislature and the state’s taxpayers. Private donors have played an important role as well. These gifts support new facilities and programs and, most important, provide the scholarship incentives that bring Nevada’s best and brightest student scholars to campus. UNLV operates an on-campus Center for Business and Economic Research, Center for Economic Education, Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies (in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency), Desert Biology Research Center, Center for Survey Research, Nuclear Waste Transportation Research Center and other research and public-service centers. Offering 108 undergraduate programs and 137 graduate tracts, UNLV graduated a class of nearly 6,000 last year. The University operates on a semester system and is a member of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the Council of Graduate Schools, the American Council of Education and the Western College Association. All of the University’s academic programs are fully accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, and many programs have received further accreditation from independent national accreditation bodies.

PRESIDENT PRESID NT IDENT PRESIDENT ENT dr. neal

SMATRESK

Dr. Neal J. Smatresk was appointed President of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on Aug. 6, 2009. His career at UNLV began in 2007 as executive vice president and provost, where he was responsible for the leadership and administration of all academic and research programs, spanning 15 colleges and two professional schools. In the last four years, UNLV has hit a number of milestones and academic achievements despite challenging times. Smatresk emphasizes how vitally important UNLV is to improving educational access and success for diverse students, spurring the research and innovation needed for diversification of Southern Nevada’s economic base, and supplying both an educated work force and critically needed services for the community and region. A testament to his vision is UNLV’s partnership with the highly respected Brookings Institution to establish Brookings Mountain West, the national think tank’s first foray this side of the Mississippi. UNLV completed a recordbreaking $537 million fundraising campaign, with Smatresk and his leadership team garnering a $12.6 million donation from the Engelstad Family Foundation to support the largest active scholarship program in the university’s history. Under Smatresk’s direction, UNLV established the Academic Success Center, which is living up to its name by helping students find the right majors, succeed in their classes, and graduate on time. Student athletes are advised through the center, and they have never done better in the classroom. In addition to his teaching and leadership roles, Smatresk has championed kindergarten to doctorate science outreach efforts and teacher professional development, participating in a number of programs throughout his career that focus on science, technology, engineering and math career development. UNLV’s president is a scientist by training and received his Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1980. Following post-doctoral work at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Smatresk joined the University of Texas, Arlington (UTA) department of biology in 1982. In his 22 years at UTA, he served as chair of biology and later dean of science, until his appointment as the chief academic officer at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2004. During his time there, Hawaii’s flagship university entered the ranks of the top 25 federally funded institutions, gained three National Academy of Science members, and received recognition from the Chinese Ministry of Education as a Confucius Institute, an honor shared by only 11 other U.S. institutions. Smatresk has received numerous teaching awards, and his research in cardiorespiratory physiology has resulted in more than 50 papers and book chapters and grants from the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health. His undergraduate alma mater, Gettysburg College, awarded him its Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award in 2011.

ATHLETIC TIC DIRECTO DIRECTOR RECTOR RECTO ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

LIVENGOOD

Bringing with him a wealth of experience and the reputation as one of the nation’s top administrators, Jim Livengood was introduced as UNLV’s 11th full-time Director of Athletics on Dec. 17, 2009. Livengood wasted no time getting to work, as less than two weeks later he hired Bobby Hauck as the 10th head coach in Rebel football history. Just three months after that it was a nounced that a new, state-of-the-art basketball practice facility, the Mendenhall Center, would be built, with construction starting later in the year. Livengood came to UNLV following a successful tenure of more than 15 years at the University of Arizona where he oversaw an athletics program that annually competed for championships not only in the Pac-10 Conference but also at a national level, maintained a high academic standard for its student-athletes and continually operated its $43 million budget in the black. His fiscal leadership helped Arizona remain one of the lone black-ink athletics programs among a small handful of institutions that rely exclusively on generated funds and do not receive state-appropriated monies. During his time in Tucson, he served as the Paciic-10 Conference president, chair of the Pac-10 Athletic

Directors Revenue Sharing Committee and a member of the conference's Bowl Committee and Basketball Tournament Subcommittee. He also was a member of the Rose Bowl Management Committee, the NCAA Fellows program, NACDA President, and chair of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee, on which he served five years. His work at Arizona and its extesion on the national level earned him an Athletic Director of the Year Award from the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics in 2006 for Division I-A. Livengood initiated Campaign Arizona, which raised more than $130 million for athletic facility improvements and endowments while the Wildcats maintained a top-25 competitive record in the NACDA Directors' Cup (formerly Sears Cup), including high rankings of sixth in 1993-94, fourth in 1994-95, seventh in 1995-96, sixth in both 1996-97 and 1997-98 and ninth in 2001-02. That record reflects success throughout Arizona's broad-based program, highlighted by participation in the 1994 and 2001 NCAA Men's Final Four and champions of the 1997 NCAA Men's National Basketball Tournament. Ar zona also won the 1994, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2006 and 2007 NCAA Women's Softball College World Series titles, the 1996 and 2000 NCAA Women's Golf titleand the 2008 men's and women's NCAA Swimming Championships. UA's student-athlete graduation rate continued to be historically higher than that of the general student body rate during his tenure at UA. Nearly 100 student-athletes earned conference or regional all-academic honors, and 20 percent of UA student-athletes attained honors-level cumulative grade point averages. Livengood is a member of the NCAA Fellows Program to mentor new athletic directors, has served as a member of the NCAA Peer Review Team from 1994-99, the NCAA Gender Equity Task Force, and the Women's Commi ttee on Athletics. He has been a member of the NACDA Preseason Football Games Committee

since 2000 and was a member of the NACDA Strategic Planning Committee from 1999-2001. He served as NACDA president in 1998-1999, and in 1999 was named Division I-A Athletic Director of the Year. He is also a member of the Division 1-A Athletic Directors Associttion, having served as president of that association in 1998. Livengood spent six years as the Athletics Director at Washington State University from 1988-93 where he developed what is still widely regarded as a model gender equity program. In addition he laid the groundwork for a student-athlete wellness center that is regarded as one of the finest in the nation. Livengood began his administrative career in 1980 as the Associate Director for Development and Public Relations at Washington State before becoming the Athletics Director at Southern Illinois, a position he held until returning to Washington State. Born March 28, 1945, in Walla Walla, Wash., he received his bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University in 1968 and completed his fifth-year education requirement for teaching certification at Central Washington University in 1972. He taught and served as an assistant football coach and track coach at Moses Lake High School in Washington in 1968-69, and as head football and basketball coach and counselor at Ephrata High School in Washington from 1972-80 before moving into athletics administration. Jim and his wife, Linda, have two grown children, Michelle, a lawyer in Memphis, and Jeremy, who resides in Phoenix. Both children are University of Arizona graduates. Michelle earned her law degree in May 2000 and Jeremy graduated in December 1999. The Livengoods are the proud grandparents of twin daughters, Emma and Isabella, born to Michelle and husband, Jack Murphy, in March 2009.

HALL F FAM FAMEE HALL OF OF FAME Class of 2010

Six different Rebel sports were represented when the UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame most recently welcomed new members on Oct. 1, 2010. Five former Rebel standout players, one head coach and a distinguished contributor joined two record-setting teams to form the Class of 2010 that was honored in ceremonies at the M Resort and then again at the UNLV football game the following evening. Also being honored that night was former Rebel football player and current CEO of the Palms, George Maloof Jr., who received the inaugural Silver Rebel Award. Born in 1987, UNLV’s Athletics Hall of Fame is now 105 members strong. Under the hall’s bylaws, former student-athletes must have completed their eligibility at least 10 years earlier to be selected. Coaches and administrators must have stopped working at the University five years previous. The hall's next class will be announced in 2012.

JEREMY ANDERSON (1996-2000) was prolific performer on the golf course and in the classroom and is the only athlete in school history to be a three-time All-American and three-time academic All-American. A member of head coach Dwaine Knight’s 1998 National Championship squad, Anderson had the unusual honor of being voted player of the year in two different conferences (1999 Western Athletic and 2000 Mountain West). DANIEL BARBER (1989-92) is one of only two All-Americans in Rebel soccer history, as he was a Freshman All-American in 1989 and then a third team selection two seasons later. JULIE CRANDALL (1995-98) is regarded as the best catcher in UNLV’s storied softball history. A multipleseason All-American, she started behind the plate for the top team in school history, helping the 1995 Rebels to a tie for third place at the Women’s College World Series. NICK GARRITANO (1991-94) was arguably the nation’s best place-kicker as a senior and he left as UNLV’s second-leading scorer in history with 240 points. RYAN LUDWICK (1997-99) played three seasons at UNLV before becoming the fourth-highest draft pick in program history. The 1997 First Team Freshman All-American was a two-time preseason All-American before going on to an All-Star MLB career. The 1994 UNLV FOOTBALL TEAM is one of two in school history to win a conference championship and head coach Jeff Horton’s squad went on to rout Central Michigan 52-24 in Las Vegas Bowl III. The 1985 UNLV MEN’S SOCCER TEAM was the winningest group in program history, setting multiple school records, including most wins and fewest losses as head coach Barry Barto’s squad finished 18-2-2 and ranked fourth. HEAD COACH DR. LARRY EASLEY (Posthumous) (1992-03) coached the UNLV men’s tennis team longer than anyone in history, led UNLV to three Big West Conference championships and produced four of UNLV’s five all-time men’s All-Americans, including two individual national champions. DISTINGUISHED CONTRIBUTOR BOB MENDENHALL is the owner and chief executive officer of the Las Vegas Paving Corporation. A longtime supporter of the UNLV program, Mendenhall most recently became a major part of a group that is building and donating a new multi-million dollar practice facility for the Runnin’ Rebels.
