SOPHOMORES

04 The 2011 UNLV Volleyball team will have a much different appearance than it has had in the past on the sidelines with a new coaching staff led by Cindy Fredrick and her 23 years of NCAA Division I head coaching experience. In addition to the new staff, this year’s squad features eight letterwinners and eight newcomers that will comprise the 16-member team. After five consecutive years of at least winning 15 games, the volleyball program had fallen on hard times with back-to-back losing campaigns, but look to turn things around in 2011. This year’s edition features four upperclassmen, which includes two junior-college transfers – Elisa (Lili) Brochado and Nikki Schneider, and 12 underclassmen. Amanda Alles is the lone senior on the squad, while junior Kendra Glendenning rounds out the quartet of seniors and juniors. Of the 12 underclassmen, five are returning sophomores, two are sophomore transfers and the remaining five are freshmen– including 2010 redshirt Layne Wilson. This year’s edition features four upperclassmen, which includes two junior college transfers – Elisa Brochado and Nikki Schneider and 12 underclassmen. Of the 12 underclassmen, five are returning sophomores, two are sophomore transfers and the remaining five are freshmen – including 2010 redshirt Layne Wilson. This year’s squad has some shoes to fill with the graduation of Kelsey Keeler, Kela Lau Hee, Jeralynn Makaiwi and Sara Nehf, who was the team’s lone honoree for All-Mountain West honors in 2010. Nehf and Keeler were instrumental both offensively and defensively, with the pair combining for 615 kills, 363 digs and 118 total blocks. Besides the defensive numbers put up by Nehf and Keeler, Lau Hee led the team with 413 digs, while Nile Te’o, a junior on last year’s team, had 198

THOMAS

2011 OUTLOOK digs of her own before leaving the program in the off-season. In all, 91% of last year’s assists’ production returns with Alles, Glendenning and sophomore Stephanie Thelen. The trio combined to dish out 87% of the team’s 1,272 helpers. Sophomore Candice Thomas and Madeline Westman helped the team at the net last year, as the pair combined to post 215 total blocks. Both of them found their way into UNLV’s single-season record book in the blocking categories. Westman’s freshman season witnessed her rack up the fourthmost assisted blocks (107) and sixth-most total blocks (123), while Thomas countered with the seventh-most solo blocks (22). New to the roster besides Brochado, Schneider and Wilson are sophomore transfers Tori Lounsbery and Taylor Richard; and freshmen Nicole Buzo, Allison Davies and Daryn Glenn. "We are a very young team this year and we expect to have some growing pains," said Fredrick. "Our goal is to continually improve and finish the season strong."

OUTSIDE HITTERS The 2011 Rebels will have their greatest depth at the net. The team will have between seven to nine options depending on the lineup. Outside: Brochado, Buzo, Falemaka, Glenn, Moea’i, Richard and Schneider will line up as outside hitters, while Alles and Thelen may see some time attacking when not at the setter position. Falemaka and Moea’i are returners to the position and played in 30 and 26 matches each, respectively. Falemaka saw playing time in 92 sets and had one double-double, while notching 97 kills, 15 assists, seven aces, 121 digs and 16 total blocks. Moea’i played in 89 sets and compiled 164 kills,

14 assists, two aces, 72 digs and 16 total blocks. Brochado (College of Southern Idaho), Richard (Western Michigan) and Schneider (Kishwaukee College) racked up impressive numbers at their previous stops before becoming Rebels. Brochado and Schneider both bring two years of collegiate experience with them to UNLV, while Richard, who may also see time as a defensive specialist, enters as a sophomore. Buzo and Glenn are freshmen that will see some playing time on the outside. "Makenzie has made great strides in her hitting over the spring and summer. She hits a heavy ball and adds to the offense with a variety of shots. Sekola is a dynamic player, who can mix up a lot of shots. Lili has the most experience and brings some fire on the court with her play both offensively and defensively. Daryn is the only freshman hitter and she has the ability to play right and left side. She is an aggressive front row player and a solid blocker. Nikki and Nicole will bring some depth to the team as outside hitters."

MIDDLE BLOCKERS The middle will be comprised of three sophomores: Thomas, Westman and Katlin Winters. Thomas and Westman are a formidable duo that made their name known last year at the front of the net after playing in all 30 matches and 114 sets. Besides their impressive blocking numbers amassed last season, the duo also showed what they can do on the offensive side of the ball. Thomas led the team in hitting efficiency last year with a .242 average, while knocking down 238. Westman followed closely behind in efficiency as she hit at a .238 clip and owned 189 kills. Winters played sparingly in five matches and 11 sets early in the 2010 campaign, but was limited the remainder of the season because of injury.

FALEMAKA

2011 OUTLOOK

05

"Candice and Maddie both have experience from last year. Candice is an explosive hitter who brings a lot of fire to the court. Maddie is the opposite in demeanor from Candice, but she is smooth in her movements and has a good arm swing. Katlin is new to the middle mix, as she was injured for most of last season. She has improved a great deal and can play both the right side and middle."

LIBERO & DEFENSIVE SPECIALISTS The back row will have a completely different appearance to it from the past few years. Gone are Lau Hee, Makaiwi and Te’o and in their spots are Davies, Lounsbery, Richard and Wilson.

SETTERS

Lounsbery has the most playing experience of the trio after playing her freshman season as a setter at Black Hills State. She had a total of 16 kills, 886 assists, 23 aces and 169 digs.

Similar to the middle blocker position, the setters will return the same trio that dished out all the helpers to the attackers.

Wilson was a member of the 2010 Rebels team, but sat out the year as a redshirt.

Alles, Glendenning and Thelen all saw time on the court in 2010 either in the 6-2 or 5-1 system that was being played by the team. Alles ranks sixth in UNLV’s career record book with 1,029 assists after playing in 65 matches and 198 sets over the past three seasons. She played in all 30 matches last season and all but three sets. She assisted on 619 kills and also contributed 100 digs, 58 total blocks and 11 aces. She also had three double-doubles. Glendenning played in 29 matches and 95 sets and amassed six double-doubles. She was second on the team in assists with 382. She also chipped in 173 digs, six aces, two kills and one assisted block. Thelen saw action in 20 matches and 38 sets. She had 110 assists, 10 digs, seven total blocks and four kills. "Stephanie, Amanda and Kendra all have something to offer and it's all a bit different. We expect them to all compete for time on the court, as all three saw action last season. Stephanie and Amanda are solid front row setters, who can block and hit well, while Kendra plays strong defense as a back row setter."

Davies comes to Las Vegas as a freshman. "Taylor has spent most of her career as a hitter that plays well on the back row. She is now focused on the libero position because of her solid ball control and good passing. She has the ability to cover a great deal of the back row with consistency. Allison is our quickest defensive player and she brings an energy to the back court as well as solid defense. Layne has become a solid passer and should share time in the back court with Tayler and Allison. Tori has moved from a setter to a defensive player for us. She will also add depth in the defensive position, as well as a great sense of team spirit.

ence. We know have a lot of work to do to become a successful program, but we're definitely excited about the prospects of building something special at UNLV." UNLV’s schedule can be broken down by conferences, as well. In all, the Rebels will play 12 teams from nine different leagues and one independent squad (Cal State Bakersfield). They will square off twice against schools from the Big West (Cal State Northridge and UC Davis), Big Sky (Eastern Washington and Northern Colorado), Southland (Central Arkansas and Northwestern State) and WAC (Fresno State and Nevada, Reno). They will also meet teams from the Big 12 (Baylor), Ohio Valley (Morehead State), Pac-12 (Colorado), Summit League (Southern Utah) and WCC (San Francisco). The team opens up the season in four consecutive tournaments for a total of 12 matches. The first two are on the road at Northern Colorado (Greeley, Colo.) and Texas Tech (Lubbock, Texas). Following the tournament schedule, UNLV will have 16 regular-season contests remaining with 14 devoted to the Mountain West field and two to non-conference opponents (Nevada, Reno and Cal State Bakersfield).

2011 SCHEDULE The Rebels are slated to play in 28 regular-season matches in 2011 prior to participating in the Mountain West Tournament, which returns this year for the first time since 2007. The schedule is highlighted by two squads that played in the 2010 NCAA Tournament and owned a combined record of 1-2 at the national event. Colorado State went 1-1 with an appearance in the second round, while New Mexico went 0-1. Overall, UNLV will play 14 conference matches and 13 non-conference events. "The Mountain West is a strong volleyball confer-

MASHALLAH FAROKHMANESH Assistant Coach First Season

Farokh comes to UNLV having spent 25 years as an assistant coach on the collegiate level, including 23 at NCAA Division I institutions. Most recently, he was with Fredrick at Luther College after a stint at Wartburg College. During his career, he has helped his teams make 10 NCAA Tournament appearances with the first occurring in 1988 at Weber State, followed by nine more at Washington State that also included a trip to the Sweet 16 and two to the Elite 8. Farokh has extensive experience as both a player and coach. Born in Burojerd, Iran, he was a member of the Pahlavi High School volleyball team for four years, during which time his team won three state championships. While earning his bachelor's degree in physical education from the Teacher Training College in Tehran, Iran, he played on a men's squad that won two college championships and he was honored all four years with all-star recognition.

Farokh left for the United States in 1977 to continue his education and earned his master's degree in physical education at Western Illinois University in 1979. Later, he went on to earn his educational doctorate (EdD) in elementary school physical education in 1985 from Brigham Young University. While at BYU, he continued to compete for and coach the men's volleyball club team for three seasons. Throughout his time in the U.S., he has been active at both USVBA summer camps and clinics as a coach. Farokh and Fredrick first met at a summer camp at Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa. When Fredrick was named as the Weber State head coach (1985-89), Farokh was hired as an assistant. Together the pair earned a Big Sky Conference championship in 1988 and also the school's first NCAA Tournament bid. After four years at Weber State the duo left for Washington State (1989-2004).

Following college, Farokh went on to play for the Iranian National Team. During his seven-year tenure on the squad, he was elected captain and also played in international competition.

In Pullman, Farokh was part of a Cougar program that experienced seven seasons with 20-plus wins. He coached three All-Americans, including the Pac-10 Player of the Year. From 1989 through 2003, he helped lead Washington State to a 278-192 record.

Farokh began his coaching career in his home country of Iran when he was named head volleyball coach for Esfahan High School. During his three-year stint at Esfahan he was also coach of the Iranair Club team.

Farokh and Fredrick, who have been married since 1984, have one son, Ali Farokhmanesh, who played basketball for Northern Iowa, including facing UNLV in the NCAA Tournament in 2010.

COX PAVILION

The UNLV volleyball team received a new home in 2001 in the $16.8 million Cox Pavilion. The pavilion is a 78,300 square-foot, multi-purpose, state-ofthe-art venue connected to the Thomas & Mack Center on the UNLV campus. Cox Communications and the Thomas & Mack Center formed a partnership that brought the new facility to UNLV and the Las Vegas Community. As part of a $5 million agreement, Cox Communications secured the naming rights for the facility as well as opportunities for sponsorship and hospitality. Former UNLV President Dr. Carol Harter stated when it opened, “We are pleased that Cox, a relatively new member of the Southern Nevada corporate community, has chosen to take an active role in supporting both academics and athletics at UNLV. The new Cox Pavilion, like Cox’s donation of television equipment and their annual support for a new cable television education channel, will benefit the community in many ways.” The pavilion is a two-level structure. The ground floor features men’s and women’s locker facilities, player lounges and practice courts for basketball and volleyball. The top level is a multi-purpose venue with a seating capacity for 2,800 and features padded, retractable seating throughout. “The Cox Pavilion features the best volleyball venue in the country and our athletes love to play in the bright arena with the home crowd support,” said Allison Keeley, UNLV’s volleyball head coach. “The size creates an intimate viewing venue where our fans feel like they are part of the match. We appreciate the effort on the behalf of UNLV to showcase our team in such a spectacular setting.” Pictured: Top: Outside view of the Cox Pavilion. Middle: Inside view of the Cox Pavilion. UNLV volleyball had four student-athletes named to the 2010 Academic All-Mountain West Team, which marked the 11th straight season that at least four achieved the feat. In fact, academic advising has helped produce 74 such honorees since UNLV joined the MW in 1999. Kelsey Keeler, Madeline Westman and Layne Wilson earned the MW Scholar-Athlete Award for the 2010-11 academic year. Westman and Wilson were first-time honorees for the honor, while Keeler became only the third Rebel to meet the conference's academic standards for the award all four years of her career. She joined Jessica Walters (2006-10) and Erin Greenwood (2006-09) in the select club. Overall, 27 Rebel student-athletes have been recognized dating back to the 2002-03 academic year.

Walters was previously named UNLV’s Most Outstanding Female Athlete two academic years, while owning the highest cumulative GPA among all female student-athletes. She also was named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Eight First Teams in 2007 and '08, while Greenwood was selected to the third team in '08.

SPORTS MEDICINE

Day-to-day preventative medicine on the campus is made easy with the Marilyn and Si Redd Sports Medicine Complex. The state-of-the-art operation is a major part of the $8.5 million Lied Athletic facility. Made possible by a generous gift of $1.5 million by Marilyn and Si Redd, the athletic training facility incorporates the total scope of sports medicine over and 8,500-square-foot area. Aside from five staff offices, a rehabilitation room houses a dozen pieces of equipment including Cybex stationary bicycles, stair machines and treadmills, all under a natural skylight. The largest area features a dozen tables to offer student-athletes various treatments throughout the day. Taping, padding and bracing all take place in another all-inclusive room. Finally, an aquatic therapy room features three above-ground whirlpools surrounding a 10-feet deep pool for rehabilitative exercises. All of these features make it possible for UNLV student-athletes to rehabilitate injuries without ever needing to leave the Lied Athletic Complex. Other amenities include a physician’s office and exam room to provide daily medical service for student-athletes. A drug-testing facility also is part of the new complex. This expedites medical care because the student-athletes health care is self-contained. Also, UNLV’s academic program and its student athletic trainers benefit from a sports medicine library, study room and conference facility. “This is one of the top complexes in the nation because of the versatility it offers to service student-athletes in every area of sports medicine,” says Kyle Wilson, UNLV’s Director of Athletic Training. “We’re now more efficient, more accessible and more effective in preventing and rehabilitating athletic injuries.”

REBEL HISTORY

1968-73

1974, 1977-82

1975-76

1983-96

The logo lasted until the early 1970s when a group of black athletes came to Baepler, who was academic vice president at the time, and voiced its displeasure with having a mascot that had a connection with the wrong side of the Civil War.

Men's basketball was the first sport organized at UNLV, opening play in 1958 under head coach and athletic director Michael "Chub" Drakulich. Baseball, also coached by Drakulich, started in 1960 and football came to campus nearly a decade later when head coach Bill Ireland's squad went 8-1 in 1968. Women's club sports such as tennis emerged in 1960 under administrator Alice Mason, but basketball became the first women's varsity sport in 1974. UNLV currently sponsors seven men's and 10 women's athletic programs.

"They said it didn't feel right playing for a school with such a mascot...and I agree," said Baepler. "Southern Nevada has no real ties to the Confederacy so the change wasn't a big concern." The student senate voted on a new mascot and the human Rebel logo was born. Initially, a Colonial-like Rebel soldier was the official logo and there was talk at one time of changing UNLV's nickname to Minutemen. Essentially there was no recognized UNLV mascot for about a half-decade spilling into the early 1980s. Enter Mike Miller, the award-winning local graphic artist who eventually became the creator of the cartoon man with a long moustache known as Hey Reb. Miller said his inspiration for the logo was historical Nevada frontiersmen from the 1800s such as John C. Fremont and Kit Carson. "The character is supposed to be a trailblazer of the old West," said Miller. "I just sketched out a little mountain man with a long coat that had some fringe on it." Despite the new Rebel eventually being displayed as having striking white hair on his head and face, Miller said Hey Reb was never supposed to be an old man and put his intended age at around 30 years old. As for the unusual name of the new character, there was no campus contest or high-priced marketing focus group involved.

DRAKULICH: FATHER OF UNLV ATHLETICS

The Nickname "Rebels" was given to UNLV athletic teams because the school, emerging from the shadow of the University of Nevada, Reno, in effect "rebelled" against its bigger and older brother to the north. The name "Runnin' Rebels" (always spelled without a 'g') was coined in 1974 by then-sports information director Dominic Clark, but refers only to the UNLV men's basketball team.

COLORS The school colors of Scarlet and Gray can be traced to the late-1950s when UNLV adopted as mascot a wolf wearing a Confederate uniform. Scarlet and Gray were traditional colors of the Confederacy with its gray uniforms and red-based flag.

MASCOT Today it's Hey Reb but some at UNLV still remember the first official Rebel mascot Beauregard.

2006-PRESENT

on campus. "Reno had a northern looking wolf so we wanted a Confederate wolf."

Opened as a satellite campus in 1957, the southern regional division of the University of Nevada became Nevada Southern University in 1965 and finally evolved into University of Nevada, Las Vegas four years later when the Board of Regents granted it autonomy under the state's higher education system.

NICKNAME

1997-2005

THE FIRST REBEL FOOTBALL TEAM (1968) WAS THE ONLY SQUAD THAT PLAYED AS NEVADA SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY.

Dressed in gray military field jacket and Confederate cap, Beau is a fanged, winking, black and white cartoon wolf. He came to be because the new school in Southern Nevada wanted to take a little jab at the Wolf Pack mascot of Nevada, Reno.

"UNLV was rebelling against the status quo and the two schools' mascots seemed to mimic the Civil War," said former UNLV president, the late, Don Baepler, who later directed the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History

"I just wrote Hey Reb on the back of his coat and one of the many variations I gave them", he said. "I was hoping it would be a good slogan - a yell-out cheer at games - but it never really caught on." The mascot, however, did catch on in a big way as UNLV vaulted to the top in college apparel licensing within the decade. In 1997, a more muscular version of Hey Reb, minus a musket, was introduced and a refreshed version was developed in 2006.

Beauregard may not be prevalent in today's UNLV athletic events, but he's certainly not gone and forgotten. The original sketch of the wolf was converted into a mid-court painting for basketball games played in the old University gymnasium. Today, visitors can visit the black, white, scarlet and gray logo circle in its original position at what is now the Barrick Museum, which still uses the existing oak hardwood basketball floor to hold its exhibits.

50 THIS IS THE MOUNTAIN WEST The Mountain West was conceived on May 26, 1998, when the presidents of eight institutions -- Air Force, BYU, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming -- decided to form a new NCAA FBS intercollegiate athletic conference. The split from the former 16-team conference re-established continuity and stability among the membership within the new league and signaled the continuation of its tradition-rich, long-standing athletic rivalries. Three of the MW's eight original members have been conference rivals since the 1960s (New Mexico, Wyoming and Colorado State), while San Diego State (1978) and Air Force (1980) were longtime members as well. UNLV and TCU entered the fold in 1996 and the Rebels continued as one of the original eight institutions that formed the MW in 1999. TCU re-joined the group with its first year of competition in the Mountain West in 2005-06. Effective July 1, 2011, Boise State became the newest member. Fresno State and Nevada, Reno will join the Mountain West effective July 1, 2012. Also on July 1, 2012, Hawai'i will become a football-only member of the conference. From its inception in 1999, the Mountain West has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics, while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. Progressive in its approach, the MW continues to cultivate opportunities for student-athletes to compete at the highest level, while fostering academic achievement and sportsmanship. The Colorado Springs-based league is noted for its geographic diversity. Some of the most beautiful terrain and landscapes in the nation can be found within Mountain West boundaries, including the majestic Rocky Mountain range, which borders three MW institutions (Air Force, newest member Boise State and Colorado State). The high plains of Wyoming (elevation 7,220 feet - the highest Division I campus in the nation) contrast with the desert city of Las Vegas (the fastest growing metropolitan area in the West) and the Pacific Ocean locale of San Diego State. The southwestern flavor of New Mexico complements the western heritage and culture of Fort Worth, Texas, home of TCU. Mountain West members have participated in 46 bowl games under the league umbrella, including four appearances in BCS games. The MW has earned 55 postseason bids in men's basketball, including 29 NCAA Tournament appearances and two NIT Final Four berths. MW women's basketball has tallied 55 postseason slots, including 30 NCAA bids, five Sweet 16 appearances and one Elite Eight berth since 2000. The MW has produced 708 All-America selections among its 19 sponsored sports in the last 12 years, including a league-record 80 All-America honorees in 2010-11.

CRAIG THOMPSON MW Commissioner

Craig Thompson was the Mountain West's first employee when he was named commissioner on Oct. 15, 1998. Ever since, Thompson has navigated the newest NCAA Division I conference through the ever-changing landscape of intercollegiate athletics. As the league enters its 13th season of competition in 2011-12, Thompson continues to create and improve the opportunities for Mountain West institutions and student-athletes to be successful both academically and athletically. Since the Mountain West opened its doors on January 4, 1999, Thompson has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics, while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. Progressive in its approach, the MW has flourished under the guidance of Commissioner Thompson and continues to cultivate opportunities for student-athletes to compete at the highest level, while fostering academic achievement and sportsmanship. Thompson also has positioned the Mountain West for the future with the additions of Boise State University on July 1, 2011, and California State University, Fresno and the University of Nevada, Reno on July 1, 2012. The University of Hawai'i will join the league as a football-only member beginning July 1, 2012. His leadership and vision have helped the conference enhance its television revenue and exposure through revolutionary agreements with CBS Sports Network and Comcast to become the first major collegiate athletic conference to launch a dedicated sports channel featuring exclusive programming around its athletic programs. Thompson has been instrumental in strengthening the position of the Mountain West in its current Bowl Championship Series (BCS) structure. In 2006, he spearheaded an effort that resulted in better access for the MW and more than doubled the annual BCS revenue on an annual basis for non-automatic-qualifying conferences. The MW has been steadfast in its efforts to find a way to make the BCS system fair to all universities. Through its first 12 years of competition, the Mountain West has participated in 46 bowl games. The MW claimed the 2010 Bowl Challenge Cup after sending five teams into postseason action and finishing with a 4-1 (.800) mark. It was the fourth time in seven years the MW posted the best win percentage among the 11 FBS conferences. Prior to his current role, Thompson served as the commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference for nearly eight years and as the only commissioner of the American South Conference prior to the merger of the two leagues in 1991. Thompson graduated from the University of Minnesota with an undergraduate degree in journalism. He and his wife, Carla, have a son (Ted) and a daughter (Emma).

Opened in 1957 as the southern regional division of the University of Nevada with a total of 28 students, UNLV now is home to more than 28,000 students coming from every county in Nevada, all 50 U.S. states and 88 countries. Much of UNLV’s tremendous expansion is the result of support from the Nevada Legislature and the state’s taxpayers. Private donors have played an important role as well. These gifts support new facilities and programs and, most important, provide the scholarship incentives that bring Nevada’s best and brightest student scholars to campus. UNLV operates an on-campus Center for Business and Economic Research, Center for Economic Education, Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies (in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency), Desert Biology Research Center, Center for Survey Research, Nuclear Waste Transportation Research Center and other research and public-service centers. Offering 108 undergraduate programs and 137 graduate tracts, UNLV graduated a class of nearly 6,000 last year. The University operates on a semester system and is a member of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the Council of Graduate Schools, the American Council of Education and the Western College Association. All of the University’s academic programs are fully accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, and many programs have received further accreditation from independent national accreditation bodies.

PRESIDENT PRESID NT IDENT PRESIDENT ENT dr. neal

SMATRESK

Dr. Neal J. Smatresk was appointed President of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on Aug. 6, 2009. His career at UNLV began in 2007 as executive vice president and provost, where he was responsible for the leadership and administration of all academic and research programs, spanning 15 colleges and two professional schools. In the last four years, UNLV has hit a number of milestones and academic achievements despite challenging times. Smatresk emphasizes how vitally important UNLV is to improving educational access and success for diverse students, spurring the research and innovation needed for diversification of Southern Nevada’s economic base, and supplying both an educated work force and critically needed services for the community and region. A testament to his vision is UNLV’s partnership with the highly respected Brookings Institution to establish Brookings Mountain West, the national think tank’s first foray this side of the Mississippi. UNLV completed a recordbreaking $537 million fundraising campaign, with Smatresk and his leadership team garnering a $12.6 million donation from the Engelstad Family Foundation to support the largest active scholarship program in the university’s history. Under Smatresk’s direction, UNLV established the Academic Success Center, which is living up to its name by helping students find the right majors, succeed in their classes, and graduate on time. Student athletes are advised through the center, and they have never done better in the classroom. In addition to his teaching and leadership roles, Smatresk has championed kindergarten to doctorate science outreach efforts and teacher professional development, participating in a number of programs throughout his career that focus on science, technology, engineering and math career development. UNLV’s president is a scientist by training and received his Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1980. Following post-doctoral work at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Smatresk joined the University of Texas, Arlington (UTA) department of biology in 1982. In his 22 years at UTA, he served as chair of biology and later dean of science, until his appointment as the chief academic officer at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2004. During his time there, Hawaii’s flagship university entered the ranks of the top 25 federally funded institutions, gained three National Academy of Science members, and received recognition from the Chinese Ministry of Education as a Confucius Institute, an honor shared by only 11 other U.S. institutions. Smatresk has received numerous teaching awards, and his research in cardiorespiratory physiology has resulted in more than 50 papers and book chapters and grants from the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health. His undergraduate alma mater, Gettysburg College, awarded him its Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award in 2011.

ATHLETIC TIC DIRECTO DIRECTOR RECTOR RECTO ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

LIVENGOOD

Bringing with him a wealth of experience and the reputation as one of the nation’s top administrators, Jim Livengood was introduced as UNLV’s 11th full-time Director of Athletics on Dec. 17, 2009. Livengood wasted no time getting to work, as less than two weeks later he hired Bobby Hauck as the 10th head coach in Rebel football history. Just three months after that it was a nounced that a new, state-of-the-art basketball practice facility, the Mendenhall Center, would be built, with construction starting later in the year. Livengood came to UNLV following a successful tenure of more than 15 years at the University of Arizona where he oversaw an athletics program that annually competed for championships not only in the Pac-10 Conference but also at a national level, maintained a high academic standard for its student-athletes and continually operated its $43 million budget in the black. His fiscal leadership helped Arizona remain one of the lone black-ink athletics programs among a small handful of institutions that rely exclusively on generated funds and do not receive state-appropriated monies. During his time in Tucson, he served as the Paciic-10 Conference president, chair of the Pac-10 Athletic

Directors Revenue Sharing Committee and a member of the conference's Bowl Committee and Basketball Tournament Subcommittee. He also was a member of the Rose Bowl Management Committee, the NCAA Fellows program, NACDA President, and chair of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee, on which he served five years. His work at Arizona and its extesion on the national level earned him an Athletic Director of the Year Award from the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics in 2006 for Division I-A. Livengood initiated Campaign Arizona, which raised more than $130 million for athletic facility improvements and endowments while the Wildcats maintained a top-25 competitive record in the NACDA Directors' Cup (formerly Sears Cup), including high rankings of sixth in 1993-94, fourth in 1994-95, seventh in 1995-96, sixth in both 1996-97 and 1997-98 and ninth in 2001-02. That record reflects success throughout Arizona's broad-based program, highlighted by participation in the 1994 and 2001 NCAA Men's Final Four and champions of the 1997 NCAA Men's National Basketball Tournament. Ar zona also won the 1994, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2006 and 2007 NCAA Women's Softball College World Series titles, the 1996 and 2000 NCAA Women's Golf titleand the 2008 men's and women's NCAA Swimming Championships. UA's student-athlete graduation rate continued to be historically higher than that of the general student body rate during his tenure at UA. Nearly 100 student-athletes earned conference or regional all-academic honors, and 20 percent of UA student-athletes attained honors-level cumulative grade point averages. Livengood is a member of the NCAA Fellows Program to mentor new athletic directors, has served as a member of the NCAA Peer Review Team from 1994-99, the NCAA Gender Equity Task Force, and the Women's Commi ttee on Athletics. He has been a member of the NACDA Preseason Football Games Committee

since 2000 and was a member of the NACDA Strategic Planning Committee from 1999-2001. He served as NACDA president in 1998-1999, and in 1999 was named Division I-A Athletic Director of the Year. He is also a member of the Division 1-A Athletic Directors Associttion, having served as president of that association in 1998. Livengood spent six years as the Athletics Director at Washington State University from 1988-93 where he developed what is still widely regarded as a model gender equity program. In addition he laid the groundwork for a student-athlete wellness center that is regarded as one of the finest in the nation. Livengood began his administrative career in 1980 as the Associate Director for Development and Public Relations at Washington State before becoming the Athletics Director at Southern Illinois, a position he held until returning to Washington State. Born March 28, 1945, in Walla Walla, Wash., he received his bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University in 1968 and completed his fifth-year education requirement for teaching certification at Central Washington University in 1972. He taught and served as an assistant football coach and track coach at Moses Lake High School in Washington in 1968-69, and as head football and basketball coach and counselor at Ephrata High School in Washington from 1972-80 before moving into athletics administration. Jim and his wife, Linda, have two grown children, Michelle, a lawyer in Memphis, and Jeremy, who resides in Phoenix. Both children are University of Arizona graduates. Michelle earned her law degree in May 2000 and Jeremy graduated in December 1999. The Livengoods are the proud grandparents of twin daughters, Emma and Isabella, born to Michelle and husband, Jack Murphy, in March 2009.

STADIUM

HALL F FAM FAMEE HALL OF OF FAME Class of 2010

Six different Rebel sports were represented when the UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame most recently welcomed new members on Oct. 1, 2010. Five former Rebel standout players, one head coach and a distinguished contributor joined two record-setting teams to form the Class of 2010 that was honored in ceremonies at the M Resort and then again at the UNLV football game the following evening. Also being honored that night was former Rebel football player and current CEO of the Palms, George Maloof Jr., who received the inaugural Silver Rebel Award. Born in 1987, UNLV’s Athletics Hall of Fame is now 105 members strong. Under the hall’s bylaws, former student-athletes must have completed their eligibility at least 10 years earlier to be selected. Coaches and administrators must have stopped working at the University five years previous. The hall's next class will be announced in 2012.

JEREMY ANDERSON (1996-2000) was prolific performer on the golf course and in the classroom and is the only athlete in school history to be a three-time All-American and three-time academic All-American. A member of head coach Dwaine Knight’s 1998 National Championship squad, Anderson had the unusual honor of being voted player of the year in two different conferences (1999 Western Athletic and 2000 Mountain West). DANIEL BARBER (1989-92) is one of only two All-Americans in Rebel soccer history, as he was a Freshman All-American in 1989 and then a third team selection two seasons later. JULIE CRANDALL (1995-98) is regarded as the best catcher in UNLV’s storied softball history. A multipleseason All-American, she started behind the plate for the top team in school history, helping the 1995 Rebels to a tie for third place at the Women’s College World Series. NICK GARRITANO (1991-94) was arguably the nation’s best place-kicker as a senior and he left as UNLV’s second-leading scorer in history with 240 points. RYAN LUDWICK (1997-99) played three seasons at UNLV before becoming the fourth-highest draft pick in program history. The 1997 First Team Freshman All-American was a two-time preseason All-American before going on to an All-Star MLB career. The 1994 UNLV FOOTBALL TEAM is one of two in school history to win a conference championship and head coach Jeff Horton’s squad went on to rout Central Michigan 52-24 in Las Vegas Bowl III. The 1985 UNLV MEN’S SOCCER TEAM was the winningest group in program history, setting multiple school records, including most wins and fewest losses as head coach Barry Barto’s squad finished 18-2-2 and ranked fourth. HEAD COACH DR. LARRY EASLEY (Posthumous) (1992-03) coached the UNLV men’s tennis team longer than anyone in history, led UNLV to three Big West Conference championships and produced four of UNLV’s five all-time men’s All-Americans, including two individual national champions. DISTINGUISHED CONTRIBUTOR BOB MENDENHALL is the owner and chief executive officer of the Las Vegas Paving Corporation. A longtime supporter of the UNLV program, Mendenhall most recently became a major part of a group that is building and donating a new multi-million dollar practice facility for the Runnin’ Rebels.
