HEAD COACH YVONNE SCOTT-WADE Head Coach Fifth Season

One of the top up-and-coming coaches in the region, Yvonne Scott-Wade was hired as the fourth head coach in UNLV Track and Field history in 2007. Given the task of turning the Rebel program around, Scott-Wade in her first head coaching position made it her priority to recruit student-athletes that were committed to striving for excellence both academically and athletically. "I believe that UNLV track & field and cross country have the potential to be very strong teams both in the Mountain West Conference and in the nation. All it takes are the right group of individuals who are committed to the hard work that it takes to get there." Before Scott-Wade entered the world of collegiate coaching she was a member of the Japanese National Team from 1996-2004. She qualified for the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta and then the 2000 Sydney Olympics in the 100meter hurdles, where she reached the semifinals. She was an eight-time Japanese national champion, winning the 100-meter hurdles six consecutive years from 1995-2000 and then twice more in 2002 and `03. She is the Japanese national record holder in both the 60-meter hurdles and 100-meter hurdles.

is beginning to rebuild it," said UNLV Senior Associate Athletics Director Terry Cottle. "She is a tireless worker and the future of Rebel track is very bright with her and her staff." In addition to the success on the track, Scott-Wade takes great pride in the accomplishments her Rebels have in the classroom. Her athletes have been awarded 46 MWC All-Academic honors and 22 MWC Scholar-Athlete honors helping them pave their way to 2010 and 2011 NCAA All-Academic Team recognition. Scott-Wade earned her bachelor's degree in sociology with a minor in ethnic studies from Colorado in 1996. She then returned to the classroom some years later to earn her master's degree in physical education with an emphasis in sports administration from UNLV in 2010. In 2011, Scott-Wade was awarded the Nell C. Jackson Award for outstanding contributions towards women and girls in sport. She is married to Larry Wade, a former elite hurdler and member of both Texas A&M's and Big 12 Conference's respective Halls of Fame, and has a son Jordan.

As a student-athlete at the University of Colorado she earned All-American honors in 1996 and was a three-time Big Eight champion in the 100-meter hurdles. In 1996, she set the school record in the 100-meter hurdles (12.98) and recorded the second-fastest time in the 100 meters (11.68) on her way to becoming an NCAA All-American. Before moving to Las Vegas, Scott-Wade spent five years as an assistant coach at Sacramento State and Long Beach State. While at LBSU, she coached standout sprinter Brent Gray to numerous school records (100m: 10.24, 200m: 20.51) and NCAA All-American status. In her first season at the helm of the UNLV program, Scott-Wade helped mentor a 4x100 relay team that qualified for the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. She followed that by coaching a pair of individuals who qualified for the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the 200m and the 100-meter hurdles. Since her inaugural year leading the UNLV track & field program, Scott-Wade and her coaching staff have overseen 19 Mountain West Conference honorees (five indoor and 14 outdoor) and helped 17 individuals (19 times) and five relay squads compete in the NCAA Preliminaries. Four of those individuals and one relay team have advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. In 2011, Amanda Bingson and Chelsea Cassulo finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the hammer throw at the outdoor finale to earn NCAA All-American recognition. Six events in UNLV's record book have been reset under Scott-Wade's tenure. The indoor record book has seen the 3,000 meter, 5,000 meter, 60-meter hurdles and high jump marks reset once each, while the weight throw figure has been rewritten twice under Scott. The outdoor record book has witnessed the hammer throw broken numerous times by Bingson. "Yvonne has done a great job of stabilizing the program and

She was an All-American in the discus in 2002 with a fifthplace finish (175-2). She advanced to three NCAA Track & Field Championship competitions (2002, `03 and '05) and qualified for four NCAA West Regionals (2003 and `05). She was a four-time PAC-10 scorer, as well. She is still listed in UCLA's career record book in the hammer throw (seventh) and discus (eighth). In 2005, she threw 181-2 in the hammer and 188-0 in the discus. The latter result placed her eighth in the university's annals, while the toss was the ninth-best overall in the country that year. Besides the hammer throw and discus, she also competed in the shot put, javelin and weight throw at UCLA. Her best shot put was recorded in 2005 with a distance of 50-11.5. She hurled the javelin 125-10 in 2001. In 2005, she had a weight throw of 62-4.42. In 2004, she did not compete for UCLA and was a redshirt that season. She competed as an unattached athlete at a meet in Modesto, Calif., and threw a then-lifetime best 184-9 in the discus and qualified for the United States Olympic Trials. Unfortunately, she was unable to compete at the trials due to injury. As a prep athlete in Nevada, she was ranked third-best high school athlete in the nation for the discus (166-9) in 2000. MYRON PARTRIDGE STADIUM & SHEILA TARR-SMITH FIELD

On April 3, 1988, UNLV unveiled Myron Partridge Stadium and Sheila Tarr-Smith Field, the home for the Rebel track & field program. A partnership between Clark County and the UNLV Board of Regents paved the way for the $1.6 million facility. In a cooperative effort, the are occupied by the old Myron Partridge Stadium was cleared for the relocation of Paradise Elementary School and the new stadium was built on campus, just west of the Earl E. Wilson Baseball Stadium and north of Eller Media Softball Stadium. The facility was officially opened in the spring of 2000 prior to the UNLV Invitational. A dedication ceremony was held at the grand opening, naming the field, Sheila Tarr-Smith Field, in honor of the former Rebel NCAA Champion in the heptathlon, who passed away in the fall of 1998. The track, designed locally by Martin & Martin, features ISS 2000, a stateof-the-art polyurethane surface that stores and releases energy applied by the athlete. It is considered the most responsive and longest-lasting surface available and is used in most of the top track facilities in the country. Nine 48-inch lanes circle the track, a significant improvement over the eight 42-inch lanes on the old track. A steeplechase bar and pit complete the multi-use track. The field, also newly constructed, has a natural grass surface. It includes two pole vault pits, two high jump areas, two long jump /triple jump lanes, two shot put slabs and ample room for hammer and javelin events. The stadium also includes a storage facility and scoring area. Grandstands, with seating for up to 1,000 athletes and spectators, line the west edge of the track. With top-of-the-line training facilities, the stadium assists the Rebel track & field program in its quest to maintain its nationally respected status. The improvements in the facility provide UNLV the ability to host conference, national and international events.

MYRON PARTRIDGE / SHEILA TARR-SMITH MYRON PARTRIDGE

Even 30 years after his death, Myron Partridge is still one of the most highly respected and beloved sports officials in Southern Nevada. To carry on the memory of his service to the Las Vegas community, UNLV honored the late official by naming its track & field facility after him. The original track was dedicated to Partridge in 1981, two years after his death. When plans were announced to replace the school’s existing track with a new facility in 1998, it was determined that the Partridge name would also move with the track. “He did a lot, not only for this program, but for the entire Las Vegas sports community,” said former UNLV track & field head coach Al McDaniel. “He had such a rich history of helping organize fair competition for the local youth and teaching them to compete by the rules.” Partridge, a Fowlerton, Indiana native, was a multi-career man who originally came to the Las Vegas Valley in 1950 to take a job with the Clark County School District as a coordinator of a new job training and work experience program. At the time, he also served in the U.S. Naval Reserve and had been a football, basketball, baseball and track & field official since his college days. He attended Adrian College, a Division III school in Michigan. His high school basketball coach would not let players play who did not know the rules of the game. By the time Partridge had advanced to the college level, his expertise and knowledge of the game were frequently called upon. As a student in the early 1930s, he began regularly officiating games for supplemental income. An accomplished athlete, Partridge also served as the cross country and track & field coach for Adrian, leading the squad to a conference title. By the mid-1930s, Partridge had organized the first Michigan officials association to help study and train local umpires and referees during a time when not even major college conferences had such systems in place. He began his career in the U.S. Navy at the turn of the decade with the coming of World War II, running a division at sea as a lieutenant junior grade. He continued to serve in the Navy in some capacity until his retirement in 1970. Following the war, he moved around before accepting his position with the CCSD in Las Vegas. He soon became a basketball referee and baseball umpire in the area, working games from Barstow, Calif., to St. George, Utah. It was not long before Partridge joined with a couple of other local volunteers to form the Southern Nevada Officials Association. In 1977, Partridge announced a second retirement, this one from the CCSD following 27 years of service. However, he could not bring himself to abandon his third and favorite career, a sports official. He was affectionately referred to as the “Dean of Umpires.” Among the many projects undertaken by Partridge, he organized a community soccer program and high school track & field competitions, writing rules and putting together meets for the area’s youngsters. He was also the Nevada State American Softball Association commissioner for 21 years, since the group’s inception. Just before his death in 1979, he was nominated as a track and field official for the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow.

23 SHEILA TARR-SMITH

Hall of Famer. All-American. Local Hero. All of these labels and more fit former UNLV track and field star Sheila Tarr Smith, who died August 15, 1998, at the age of 34 from a rare neurological disorder. “It was a tragic loss with her premature death,” said former head coach Karen Dennis. “She’s always going to be remembered in our program.” Dennis’ statement was solidified in the spring of 1999 when UNLV named the field at its new track & field facility after the fallen champion during the stadium’s dedication ceremony. Tarr-Smith was UNLV’s first-ever national champion, capturing the 1984 NCAA heptathlon crown. She also finished second at the NCAA Championships the following year and took 11th at the 1984 Olympic Trials. During her career, Tarr-Smith broke school records in the indoor shot put (473.75), the indoor pentathlon (3,867) the outdoor shot put (49-1.5), the javelin (153-8) and the heptathlon (5,856). Her marks in the shot put and heptathlon were also conference records, and she posted the best shot put mark for a heptathlete in NCAA history. She won back-to-back Pacific Coast Athletic Association Athlete of the Year awards for her performances at the NCAA Championships, and she was named the Terrance Walsh Memorial Award winner as the Rebels’ Most Valuable Player in 1985. “Sheila came into the office one day, and I didn’t even know who she was,” recalled Dennis. “I knew her from reading old media guides and seeing her name scattered through the record books. When she told me who she was, I felt like a legend had just walked in.” And one had. At the time, Tarr-Smith still held a number of school and conference records. The two-time All-American entered not in one, but two halls of fame in 1997. Along with Randall Cunningham and Matt Williams, she was elected to the UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame in perhaps the most recognized class in the school history. She was also chosen that year to the Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame. “Sheila was one of the greatest we’ve had here at UNLV,” says Al McDaniel, the former Rebel head coach who recruited Tarr-Smith. “She was a hurdler at Bonanza High School and did some jumps and throws. I took one look at her and said, 'She’s a heptathlete!’ We recruited her immediately and with her work ethic, she just excelled.” A Las Vegas native, Tarr-Smith was also a pillar of the community. She put the strength and endurance she learned as an athlete to use as a firefighter after graduating from UNLV, saving lives and serving the public. Even after her death, Tarr-Smith did not stop receiving accolades. The Clark County School District has ensured that Las Vegas youngsters will know her name as Sheila R. Tarr Elementary School was unveiled in the fall of 2000.

SPORTS MEDICINE CHRISTINA ROPER Graduate Intern Athletic Trainer

Day-to-day preventative medicine on the campus is made easy with the Marilyn and Si Redd Sports Medicine Complex. The state-of-the-art operation is a major part of the $8.5 million Lied Athletic facility. Made possible by a generous gift of $1.5 million by Marilyn and Si Redd, the athletic training facility incorporates the total scope of sports medicine over and 8,500-square-foot area. Aside from five staff offices, a rehabilitation room houses a dozen pieces of equipment including Cybex stationary bicycles, stair machines and treadmills, all under a natural skylight. The largest area features a dozen tables to offer student-athletes various treatments throughout the day. Taping, padding and bracing all take place in another all-inclusive room. Finally, an aquatic therapy room features three above-ground whirlpools surrounding a 10-feet deep pool for rehabilitative exercises. All of these features make it possible for UNLV student-athletes to rehabilitate injuries without ever needing to leave the Lied Athletic Complex. Other amenities include a physician’s office and exam room to provide daily medical service for student-athletes. A drug-testing facility also is part of the new complex. This expedites medical care because the student-athletes health care is self-contained. Also, UNLV’s academic program and its student athletic trainers benefit from a sports medicine library, study room and conference facility. “This is one of the top complexes in the nation because of the versatility it offers to service student-athletes in every area of sports medicine,” says Kyle Wilson, UNLV’s Director of Athletic Training. “We’re now more efficient, more accessible and more effective in preventing and rehabilitating athletic injuries.”

The logo lasted until the early 1970s when a group of black athletes came to Baepler, who was academic vice president at the time, and voiced its displeasure with having a mascot that had a connection with the wrong side of the Civil War.

Men's basketball was the first sport organized at UNLV, opening play in 1958 under head coach and athletic director Michael "Chub" Drakulich. Baseball, also coached by Drakulich, started in 1960 and football came to campus nearly a decade later when head coach Bill Ireland's squad went 8-1 in 1968. Women's club sports such as tennis emerged in 1960 under administrator Alice Mason, but basketball became the first women's varsity sport in 1974. UNLV currently sponsors seven men's and 10 women's athletic programs.

"They said it didn't feel right playing for a school with such a mascot...and I agree," said Baepler. "Southern Nevada has no real ties to the Confederacy so the change wasn't a big concern." The student senate voted on a new mascot and the human Rebel logo was born. Initially, a Colonial-like Rebel soldier was the official logo and there was talk at one time of changing UNLV's nickname to Minutemen. Essentially there was no recognized UNLV mascot for about a half-decade spilling into the early 1980s. Enter Mike Miller, the award-winning local graphic artist who eventually became the creator of the cartoon man with a long moustache known as Hey Reb. Miller said his inspiration for the logo was historical Nevada frontiersmen from the 1800s such as John C. Fremont and Kit Carson. "The character is supposed to be a trailblazer of the old West," said Miller. "I just sketched out a little mountain man with a long coat that had some fringe on it." Despite the new Rebel eventually being displayed as having striking white hair on his head and face, Miller said Hey Reb was never supposed to be an old man and put his intended age at around 30 years old. As for the unusual name of the new character, there was no campus contest or high-priced marketing focus group involved.

DRAKULICH: FATHER OF UNLV ATHLETICS

The Nickname "Rebels" was given to UNLV athletic teams because the school, emerging from the shadow of the University of Nevada, Reno, in effect "rebelled" against its bigger and older brother to the north. The name "Runnin' Rebels" (always spelled without a 'g') was coined in 1974 by then-sports information director Dominic Clark, but refers only to the UNLV men's basketball team.

COLORS The school colors of Scarlet and Gray can be traced to the late-1950s when UNLV adopted as mascot a wolf wearing a Confederate uniform. Scarlet and Gray were traditional colors of the Confederacy with its gray uniforms and red-based flag.

MASCOT Today it's Hey Reb but some at UNLV still remember the first official Rebel mascot Beauregard.

2006-PRESENT

on campus. "Reno had a northern looking wolf so we wanted a Confederate wolf."

Opened as a satellite campus in 1957, the southern regional division of the University of Nevada became Nevada Southern University in 1965 and finally evolved into University of Nevada, Las Vegas four years later when the Board of Regents granted it autonomy under the state's higher education system.

NICKNAME

1997-2005

THE FIRST REBEL FOOTBALL TEAM (1968) WAS THE ONLY SQUAD THAT PLAYED AS NEVADA SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY.

Dressed in gray military field jacket and Confederate cap, Beau is a fanged, winking, black and white cartoon wolf. He came to be because the new school in Southern Nevada wanted to take a little jab at the Wolf Pack mascot of Nevada, Reno.

"UNLV was rebelling against the status quo and the two schools' mascots seemed to mimic the Civil War," said former UNLV president, the late, Don Baepler, who later directed the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History

"I just wrote Hey Reb on the back of his coat and one of the many variations I gave them", he said. "I was hoping it would be a good slogan - a yell-out cheer at games - but it never really caught on." The mascot, however, did catch on in a big way as UNLV vaulted to the top in college apparel licensing within the decade. In 1997, a more muscular version of Hey Reb, minus a musket, was introduced and a refreshed version was developed in 2006.

Beauregard may not be prevalent in today's UNLV athletic events, but he's certainly not gone and forgotten. The original sketch of the wolf was converted into a mid-court painting for basketball games played in the old University gymnasium. Today, visitors can visit the black, white, scarlet and gray logo circle in its original position at what is now the Barrick Museum, which still uses the existing oak hardwood basketball floor to hold its exhibits.

30 BINGSON NAMED 2011 SPORTSWOMAN UNLV's track & field standout Amanda Bingson was named the UNLV Sportswoman of the Year for 2010-11, UNLV Athletics announced. Bingson was a junior this past school year and is from Las Vegas. She earned All-America status in the hammer throw after finishing fourth at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships prior to competing at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Bingson finished first overall at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field West Preliminary and owned the top distance thrown combined between the East and West Regionals. Bingson claimed her second consecutive title in the hammer throw with a toss of 228-6 (69.65m) and earned all-conference honors as well as the MW's Women's Outstanding Performance Award. She broke the UNLV program record in the hammer throw on three different occasions with the final one coming at UC Irvine's Steve Scott Invitational, which saw her finish first overall and set a new stadium record with a toss of 229-0 (69.79m).

2011 REVIEW based off her showings in the 100m and 200m races. Blok was also a member on the 4x100m relay team and was partnered with Zadia Bryant, Davina Collins and Secoral Yanez for the firstplace showing. All-MWC selections are awarded to the top three finishers in each event. Bingson and Cassulo finished 1-2 in the hammer with tosses of 228-6 (69.65m) and 210-0 (64.24m), respectively. Bingson's throw was the second-best in MWC Outdoor Championship history and helped claim her second consecutive conference title in the event. She also earned the Women's Outstanding Performance award for the second straight year. Blok finished second in both the 100m (11.58) and 200m (23.83) races and ran the final leg of the 4x100m relay team that finished in a time of 45.09. This was the second year in a row that Blok was a member of the relay squad that was named to the team. As for Bryant, Collins and Yanez, this was the first time that the trio has been named to the All-MWC team.

Bingson was named the MW's Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week on March 22, after setting a new meet record at Arizona State's Baldy Castillo Invitational with a throw of 224-8 (68.47m). In the fall, she earned All-MW recognition for finishing second in the weight throw at the 2010 Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Championship.

PAIR NAMED TO ALL-MWC INDOOR TEAM

Amanda Bingson and Chelsea Cassulo finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the hammer throw at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. The duo earned All-American honors in the event by virtue of finishing in the top eight. The field of 24 participants competed in unsavory conditions with light rain and temperatures hovering in the low 70s. Bingson and Cassulo were the first members of UNLV's track and field team to be named AllAmericans since Ashley Owens finished second in the indoor 60m race in 2006. Christine Spence was the last Rebel to achieve All-American status in outdoor competition when she did so twice in 2005, after she finished sixth in the high jump and seventh in the 400m hurdles.

REBELS EARN ALL-MWC HONORS UNLV's Amanda Bingson was named to the AllMWC Track and Field team for second time. The UNLV Rebels had three individuals and its 4x100m relay team named to the 2011 All-Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field teams today. Amanda Bingson and Chelsea Cassulo were tabbed to the squad following their performances in the hammer throw, while Blok was selected

UNLV's Amanda Bingson one-upped herself at UC Irvine's Steve Scott Invitational with another record-setting performance in the hammer throw. Bingson's toss of 229-0 (69.79m) topped her previous best of 224-8 (68.47m) and broke the eightyear-old Anteater Stadium record by more than five feet.

The Mountain West Conference announced that Chelsea Cassulo and Amanda Bingson were named to the Women's Indoor Track and Field AllConference Teams. Selections were awarded to the top three finishers in each event at the MWC Indoor Championships. Cassulo, a junior from Lompoc, Calif., became the first Rebel to win the weight throw event at an MWC Indoor Championship. She recorded a program-best distance of 65-5.25 (19.87m) for the title. Her toss was the third-longest recorded in the history of the conference meet and fourth-best ever in league annals. Bingson, a junior from Las Vegas, finished second to her teammate in the weight throw with a distance of 64-7.75 (19.70m). Her effort ranks as the fourth-best in conference championship history.

TRACK TEAM EARNS ACADEMIC AWARD The UNLV track & field team (3.02 GPA) was recognized by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association as an All-Academic Team. The Rebels were one of 164 programs recognized by the USTFCCCA for earning a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better.

DUO EARNS ACADEMIC AWARD UNLV track & field's Kelsey Williamson and Emily Blok were named to the 2011 USTFCCCA Division I All-Academic Track & Field Team announced by the organization. Williamson (3.57, business administration) and Blok (3.48, kinesiological sciences) are no strangers to earning recognition for their classroom achievements, as the Mountain West named the sophomores to the academic all-conference list for the second time in their careers. Williamson was also been named to the MW's Scholar-Athlete Award twice, as well. The duo were part of a contingent of 10 Rebels that represented UNLV at the 2011 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Preliminaries held at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Williamson finished 40th in the 800m. Blok, on the other hand, advanced to the quarterfinals in both the 100m and 200m and helped the 4x100m relay team to a 14th place finish.

MOUNTAIN WEST ACADEMIC AWARDS The UNLV track and field program had a banner year in the classroom with a program-record 17 student-athletes named to the Spring 2011 Academic All-Mountain West list, while eight more - tied the program high - were tabbed to the MW's Scholar-Athlete Award to tie for the program's best output. Seven individuals were named to both honors, while 11 others were included on one of the lists. Leading the contingent of Rebels to be claim both academic honors was LaShante Ellison (3.60, social work), who racked up her fourth scholarathlete award and was named to her second academic all-conference list. Lindsay Roach (3.59, kinesiological sciences) was recognized for the third time for both honors, while Christine Lowe (3.74, hospitality management), Samantha Swan (3.81, management) and Kelsey Williamson (3.57, business administration) each earned their second scholar-athlete award. As for the academic allconference honor, Lowe has now been named three times, Williamson twice and Swan once. Larissa Davis (3.50, sociology) and Ashley Franklin (3.52, kinesiological sciences) were firsttimers chosen for both honors, while Shannon Simpson (3.67, kinesiological sciences) was named to the scholar-athlete award. Deja Edwards (3.09, kinesiological sciences) joins Lowe and Roach as three-time selections to the academic all-conference list. Emily Blok (3.48, kinesiological sciences) and Brett Zorich (3.12, kinesiological sciences) have also been selected multiple times for the academic all-conference honor, as it the second time for both of them.

42 THIS IS THE MOUNTAIN WEST The Mountain West was conceived on May 26, 1998, when the presidents of eight institutions -- Air Force, BYU, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming -- decided to form a new NCAA FBS intercollegiate athletic conference. The split from the former 16-team conference re-established continuity and stability among the membership within the new league and signaled the continuation of its tradition-rich, long-standing athletic rivalries. Three of the MW's eight original members have been conference rivals since the 1960s (New Mexico, Wyoming and Colorado State), while San Diego State (1978) and Air Force (1980) were longtime members as well. UNLV and TCU entered the fold in 1996 and the Rebels continued as one of the original eight institutions that formed the MW in 1999. TCU re-joined the group with its first year of competition in the Mountain West in 2005-06. Effective July 1, 2011, Boise State became the newest member. Fresno State and Nevada, Reno will join the Mountain West effective July 1, 2012. Also on July 1, 2012, Hawai'i will become a football-only member of the conference. From its inception in 1999, the Mountain West has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics, while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. Progressive in its approach, the MW continues to cultivate opportunities for student-athletes to compete at the highest level, while fostering academic achievement and sportsmanship. The Colorado Springs-based league is noted for its geographic diversity. Some of the most beautiful terrain and landscapes in the nation can be found within Mountain West boundaries, including the majestic Rocky Mountain range, which borders three MW institutions (Air Force, newest member Boise State and Colorado State). The high plains of Wyoming (elevation 7,220 feet - the highest Division I campus in the nation) contrast with the desert city of Las Vegas (the fastest growing metropolitan area in the West) and the Pacific Ocean locale of San Diego State. The southwestern flavor of New Mexico complements the western heritage and culture of Fort Worth, Texas, home of TCU. Mountain West members have participated in 46 bowl games under the league umbrella, including four appearances in BCS games. The MW has earned 55 postseason bids in men's basketball, including 29 NCAA Tournament appearances and two NIT Final Four berths. MW women's basketball has tallied 55 postseason slots, including 30 NCAA bids, five Sweet 16 appearances and one Elite Eight berth since 2000. The MW has produced 708 All-America selections among its 19 sponsored sports in the last 12 years, including a league-record 80 All-America honorees in 2010-11.

CRAIG THOMPSON MW Commissioner

Craig Thompson was the Mountain West's first employee when he was named commissioner on Oct. 15, 1998. Ever since, Thompson has navigated the newest NCAA Division I conference through the ever-changing landscape of intercollegiate athletics. As the league enters its 13th season of competition in 2011-12, Thompson continues to create and improve the opportunities for Mountain West institutions and student-athletes to be successful both academically and athletically. Since the Mountain West opened its doors on January 4, 1999, Thompson has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics, while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. Progressive in its approach, the MW has flourished under the guidance of Commissioner Thompson and continues to cultivate opportunities for student-athletes to compete at the highest level, while fostering academic achievement and sportsmanship. Thompson also has positioned the Mountain West for the future with the additions of Boise State University on July 1, 2011, and California State University, Fresno and the University of Nevada, Reno on July 1, 2012. The University of Hawai'i will join the league as a football-only member beginning July 1, 2012. His leadership and vision have helped the conference enhance its television revenue and exposure through revolutionary agreements with CBS Sports Network and Comcast to become the first major collegiate athletic conference to launch a dedicated sports channel featuring exclusive programming around its athletic programs. Thompson has been instrumental in strengthening the position of the Mountain West in its current Bowl Championship Series (BCS) structure. In 2006, he spearheaded an effort that resulted in better access for the MW and more than doubled the annual BCS revenue on an annual basis for non-automatic-qualifying conferences. The MW has been steadfast in its efforts to find a way to make the BCS system fair to all universities. Through its first 12 years of competition, the Mountain West has participated in 46 bowl games. The MW claimed the 2010 Bowl Challenge Cup after sending five teams into postseason action and finishing with a 4-1 (.800) mark. It was the fourth time in seven years the MW posted the best win percentage among the 11 FBS conferences. Prior to his current role, Thompson served as the commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference for nearly eight years and as the only commissioner of the American South Conference prior to the merger of the two leagues in 1991. Thompson graduated from the University of Minnesota with an undergraduate degree in journalism. He and his wife, Carla, have a son (Ted) and a daughter (Emma).

Just over five decades old, UNLV has maintained a healthy rate of growth in enrollment, programs and scholastic excellence as part of the eight-component Nevada System of Higher Education. Located in the heart of one of the world’s most vibrant and dynamic cities, UNLV has matured along with the Las Vegas area. With enrollment more than doubling the last decade, the tremendous growth has meant a flurry of construction resulting in a campus setting boasting academic and athletic facilities second to none. Steadily becoming a traditional residential university, UNLV provides on-campus housing for more than 2,000 students. A variety of student clubs and organizations along with 26 Greek organizations supplement the social development of students. From within its 15 schools and colleges, including the William S. Boyd School of Law, UNLV is also becoming a leading research institution of the West. The school’s scientific, social science, and business programs attract millions of dollars in research grants annually to fund projects in desert biology, nuclear waste transportation, laser physics, public opinion surveys and many others. In addition to traditional student programs, UNLV serves diverse local, national and international communities through its Educational Outreach Division, offering Summer Term, Continuing Education and Distance Education programs enrolling more than 53,000 students annually.

Much of UNLV’s tremendous expansion is the result of support from the Nevada Legislature and the state’s taxpayers. Private donors have played an important role as well. These gifts support new facilities and programs and, most important, provide the scholarship incentives that bring Nevada’s best and brightest student scholars to campus. UNLV operates an on-campus Center for Business and Economic Research, Center for Economic Education, Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies (in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency), Desert Biology Research Center, Center for Survey Research, Nuclear Waste Transportation Research Center and other research and public-service centers. Offering 108 undergraduate programs and 137 graduate tracts, UNLV graduated a class of nearly 6,000 last year. The University operates on a semester system and is a member of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the Council of Graduate Schools, the American Council of Education and the Western College Association. All of the University’s academic programs are fully accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, and many programs have received further accreditation from independent national accreditation bodies.

PRESIDENT PRESID NT IDENT PRESIDENT ENT dr. neal

SMATRESK

Dr. Neal J. Smatresk was appointed President of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on Aug. 6, 2009. His career at UNLV began in 2007 as executive vice president and provost, where he was responsible for the leadership and administration of all academic and research programs, spanning 15 colleges and two professional schools. In the last four years, UNLV has hit a number of milestones and academic achievements despite challenging times. Smatresk emphasizes how vitally important UNLV is to improving educational access and success for diverse students, spurring the research and innovation needed for diversification of Southern Nevada’s economic base, and supplying both an educated work force and critically needed services for the community and region. A testament to his vision is UNLV’s partnership with the highly respected Brookings Institution to establish Brookings Mountain West, the national think tank’s first foray this side of the Mississippi. UNLV completed a recordbreaking $537 million fundraising campaign, with Smatresk and his leadership team garnering a $12.6 million donation from the Engelstad Family Foundation to support the largest active scholarship program in the university’s history. Under Smatresk’s direction, UNLV established the Academic Success Center, which is living up to its name by helping students find the right majors, succeed in their classes, and graduate on time. Student athletes are advised through the center, and they have never done better in the classroom. In addition to his teaching and leadership roles, Smatresk has championed kindergarten to doctorate science outreach efforts and teacher professional development, participating in a number of programs throughout his career that focus on science, technology, engineering and math career development. UNLV’s president is a scientist by training and received his Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1980. Following post-doctoral work at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Smatresk joined the University of Texas, Arlington (UTA) department of biology in 1982. In his 22 years at UTA, he served as chair of biology and later dean of science, until his appointment as the chief academic officer at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2004. During his time there, Hawaii’s flagship university entered the ranks of the top 25 federally funded institutions, gained three National Academy of Science members, and received recognition from the Chinese Ministry of Education as a Confucius Institute, an honor shared by only 11 other U.S. institutions. Smatresk has received numerous teaching awards, and his research in cardiorespiratory physiology has resulted in more than 50 papers and book chapters and grants from the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health. His undergraduate alma mater, Gettysburg College, awarded him its Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award in 2011.

ATHLETIC TIC DIRECTO DIRECTOR RECTOR RECTO ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

LIVENGOOD

Bringing with him a wealth of experience and the reputation as one of the nation’s top administrators, Jim Livengood was introduced as UNLV’s 11th full-time Director of Athletics on Dec. 17, 2009. Livengood wasted no time getting to work, as less than two weeks later he hired Bobby Hauck as the 10th head coach in Rebel football history. Just three months after that it was a nounced that a new, state-of-the-art basketball practice facility, the Mendenhall Center, would be built, with construction starting later in the year. Livengood came to UNLV following a successful tenure of more than 15 years at the University of Arizona where he oversaw an athletics program that annually competed for championships not only in the Pac-10 Conference but also at a national level, maintained a high academic standard for its student-athletes and continually operated its $43 million budget in the black. His fiscal leadership helped Arizona remain one of the lone black-ink athletics programs among a small handful of institutions that rely exclusively on generated funds and do not receive state-appropriated monies. During his time in Tucson, he served as the Paciic-10 Conference president, chair of the Pac-10 Athletic

Directors Revenue Sharing Committee and a member of the conference's Bowl Committee and Basketball Tournament Subcommittee. He also was a member of the Rose Bowl Management Committee, the NCAA Fellows program, NACDA President, and chair of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee, on which he served five years. His work at Arizona and its extesion on the national level earned him an Athletic Director of the Year Award from the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics in 2006 for Division I-A. Livengood initiated Campaign Arizona, which raised more than $130 million for athletic facility improvements and endowments while the Wildcats maintained a top-25 competitive record in the NACDA Directors' Cup (formerly Sears Cup), including high rankings of sixth in 1993-94, fourth in 1994-95, seventh in 1995-96, sixth in both 1996-97 and 1997-98 and ninth in 2001-02. That record reflects success throughout Arizona's broad-based program, highlighted by participation in the 1994 and 2001 NCAA Men's Final Four and champions of the 1997 NCAA Men's National Basketball Tournament. Ar zona also won the 1994, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2006 and 2007 NCAA Women's Softball College World Series titles, the 1996 and 2000 NCAA Women's Golf titleand the 2008 men's and women's NCAA Swimming Championships. UA's student-athlete graduation rate continued to be historically higher than that of the general student body rate during his tenure at UA. Nearly 100 student-athletes earned conference or regional all-academic honors, and 20 percent of UA student-athletes attained honors-level cumulative grade point averages. Livengood is a member of the NCAA Fellows Program to mentor new athletic directors, has served as a member of the NCAA Peer Review Team from 1994-99, the NCAA Gender Equity Task Force, and the Women's Commi ttee on Athletics. He has been a member of the NACDA Preseason Football Games Committee

since 2000 and was a member of the NACDA Strategic Planning Committee from 1999-2001. He served as NACDA president in 1998-1999, and in 1999 was named Division I-A Athletic Director of the Year. He is also a member of the Division 1-A Athletic Directors Associttion, having served as president of that association in 1998. Livengood spent six years as the Athletics Director at Washington State University from 1988-93 where he developed what is still widely regarded as a model gender equity program. In addition he laid the groundwork for a student-athlete wellness center that is regarded as one of the finest in the nation. Livengood began his administrative career in 1980 as the Associate Director for Development and Public Relations at Washington State before becoming the Athletics Director at Southern Illinois, a position he held until returning to Washington State. Born March 28, 1945, in Walla Walla, Wash., he received his bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University in 1968 and completed his fifth-year education requirement for teaching certification at Central Washington University in 1972. He taught and served as an assistant football coach and track coach at Moses Lake High School in Washington in 1968-69, and as head football and basketball coach and counselor at Ephrata High School in Washington from 1972-80 before moving into athletics administration. Jim and his wife, Linda, have two grown children, Michelle, a lawyer in Memphis, and Jeremy, who resides in Phoenix. Both children are University of Arizona graduates. Michelle earned her law degree in May 2000 and Jeremy graduated in December 1999. The Livengoods are the proud grandparents of twin daughters, Emma and Isabella, born to Michelle and husband, Jack Murphy, in March 2009.

STADIUM

HALL F FAM FAMEE HALL OF OF FAME Class of 2010

Six different Rebel sports were represented when the UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame most recently welcomed new members on Oct. 1, 2010. Five former Rebel standout players, one head coach and a distinguished contributor joined two record-setting teams to form the Class of 2010 that was honored in ceremonies at the M Resort and then again at the UNLV football game the following evening. Also being honored that night was former Rebel football player and current CEO of the Palms, George Maloof Jr., who received the inaugural Silver Rebel Award. Born in 1987, UNLV’s Athletics Hall of Fame is now 105 members strong. Under the hall’s bylaws, former student-athletes must have completed their eligibility at least 10 years earlier to be selected. Coaches and administrators must have stopped working at the University five years previous. The hall's next class will be announced in 2012.

JEREMY ANDERSON (1996-2000) was prolific performer on the golf course and in the classroom and is the only athlete in school history to be a three-time All-American and three-time academic All-American. A member of head coach Dwaine Knight’s 1998 National Championship squad, Anderson had the unusual honor of being voted player of the year in two different conferences (1999 Western Athletic and 2000 Mountain West). DANIEL BARBER (1989-92) is one of only two All-Americans in Rebel soccer history, as he was a Freshman All-American in 1989 and then a third team selection two seasons later. JULIE CRANDALL (1995-98) is regarded as the best catcher in UNLV’s storied softball history. A multipleseason All-American, she started behind the plate for the top team in school history, helping the 1995 Rebels to a tie for third place at the Women’s College World Series. NICK GARRITANO (1991-94) was arguably the nation’s best place-kicker as a senior and he left as UNLV’s second-leading scorer in history with 240 points. RYAN LUDWICK (1997-99) played three seasons at UNLV before becoming the fourth-highest draft pick in program history. The 1997 First Team Freshman All-American was a two-time preseason All-American before going on to an All-Star MLB career. The 1994 UNLV FOOTBALL TEAM is one of two in school history to win a conference championship and head coach Jeff Horton’s squad went on to rout Central Michigan 52-24 in Las Vegas Bowl III. The 1985 UNLV MEN’S SOCCER TEAM was the winningest group in program history, setting multiple school records, including most wins and fewest losses as head coach Barry Barto’s squad finished 18-2-2 and ranked fourth. HEAD COACH DR. LARRY EASLEY (Posthumous) (1992-03) coached the UNLV men’s tennis team longer than anyone in history, led UNLV to three Big West Conference championships and produced four of UNLV’s five all-time men’s All-Americans, including two individual national champions. DISTINGUISHED CONTRIBUTOR BOB MENDENHALL is the owner and chief executive officer of the Las Vegas Paving Corporation. A longtime supporter of the UNLV program, Mendenhall most recently became a major part of a group that is building and donating a new multi-million dollar practice facility for the Runnin’ Rebels.
