The 2012 UNLV Volleyball team looks to build upon the success that its predecessor had in the Mountain West Tournament. Last year’s edition entered the conference’s end-of-season soiree as the seventh seed and wound up in the championship match after it defeated the second-seeded (San Diego State) and third-seeded (TCU) teams in its first two outings. Cindy Fredrick, who is in her second season at the helm of the Rebel program and 25th as a collegiate head coach, returns eight letterwinners from the 2011 season. More importantly, all eight of those student-athletes were contributors; six of which were starters. This year’s strength will be the continuity supplied by the return of Madeline Westman and Candice Thomas in the middle; Sekola Falemaka and Daryn Glenn on the outside; Allison Davies and Layne Wilson in the back row; and setter Stephanie Thelen. Westman (2011 All-Mountain West), Thomas (2011 MW All-Tournament) and Thelen (2011 MW All-Tournament) were tabbed to various postseason awards lists following last season. Best of all, the returners comprised the bulk of the totals tallied statistically for the 2011 squad. Overall, nearly 70% of the five key statistical categories return for the Rebels. UNLV’s largest percentage coming back is in assists at 95%, which is primarily influenced by the 1,153 helpers dished out by Thelen. Westman and Thomas loomed large at the net last year, which helped contribute to the 86% of blocks reappearing. Percentages for service aces and digs are both in the upper 70s – 79% and 76%, respectively – while kills round out the quintet with a 69%. Although this year’s team has eight familiar names returning, six newcomers joined the mix and pushed the roster size to 14. Siga Appelgate leads
the list of fresh faces to wear the Scarlet & Gray after a two-year stint at the University of the Pacific. Appelgate, a junior, joins a quintet of freshmen – Taylor Blackmun, Kinsey Caldwell, Bree Hammel, Ceannia Kincade and Tanja Ranilovic – to round out the Rebel roster.
OUTSIDE HITTERS Falemaka (junior) and Glenn (sophomore) are the lone returners on the outside for the Rebels, but will be joined by Appelgate, Hammel and Kincade. Falemaka saw action in 26 matches (87 sets) and compiled six double-doubles (all kill-dig combinations). She threw down 172 kills and notched 207 digs, while contributing 31 assists, 23 blocks and 13 aces. Glenn played in all 31 matches and 118 sets with five double-doubles (all kill-dig combinations) as a first-year player. She amassed 232 kills and finished second on the squad in digs with 260. She also pitched in 62 assists, 54 blocks and a teambest 30 aces. Appelgate, a transfer from the Big West Conference, participated in 45 matches in her two seasons playing for the Pacific Tigers, which saw her tabulate 78 digs, 66 kills, 17 aces, 17 blocks and nine assists. Hammel and Kincade also will see some playing time on the outside.
MIDDLE BLOCKERS The middle is probably the position with the most depth and experience on the court this season. Westman (junior) and Thomas (junior) both added to their top-10 rankings in the program’s singleseason and career record books with their 134 and 110 total block outputs last season. The duo will
also see Katlin Winters (redshirt sophomore) and rookie Tanja Ranilovic provide some help at the net. Westman, who ranks fifth overall in career total blocks and sixth in both hitting efficiency and assisted blocks, played in all 31 matches and 123 sets. She led the team in hitting efficiency (.290), total blocks (134) and assisted blocks (112), while coming in second in kills (286) and solo blocks (22). Thomas sits sixth overall in career blocks after playing in 31 matches and 123 sets last year. She led the team in solo blocks (23), while ranking second in total blocks (110) and assisted blocks (87). She was third in kills (236). Winters saw action in six matches and 15 sets, which produced 12 kills, nine blocks and five assists. Ranilovic comes to UNLV after developing her game in Serbia.
SETTERS Thelen became the team’s primary setter last season after only playing in five matches during her freshman year. In 2011, her assist total was the sixth-most recorded in a single season by a Rebel, and the figure helped propel her to the same position in UNLV’s career book (1,263), as well. Thelen notched a team-best 10 double-doubles (all assist-dig combinations) last season. Besides her astonishing assist tally, she recorded 245 digs, 86 kills, 81 blocks and 21 aces. She will be joined by Caldwell, a newcomer from Fredrick’s neck of the woods in Iowa.

2012 OUTLOOK DEFENSIVE SPECIALISTS The back row will see the return of Davies (sophomore) and Wilson (redshirt sophomore), while Blackmun adds some depth to the position. Davies played in all 31 matches and a total of 118 sets en route to notching the sixth-most digs (398) in a single season by a Rebel. She also contributed 33 assists, 17 aces and one kills as a freshman. Wilson, who sat out the 2012 season as a redshirt, contributed as a freshman last season, and she saw action in 21 matches and 70 sets. She notched 138 digs, 10 assists, three aces and two kills.
2012 SCHEDULE The Rebels have 29 matches on the docket with 12 of those contests occurring in four tournaments, two of which they will host. The schedule is loaded with five meetings with squads that made the 2011 NCAA Tournament – Colorado State (twice), Louisville, Miami and Middle Tennessee State. UNLV opens the season with six of its first nine
05 matches played in Las Vegas at the Cox Pavilion. The Rebels kick off the 2012 campaign at home in their own UNLV Invitational, which is scheduled for Aug. 24-25. The Scarlet & Gray will welcome Northern Arizona, The Citadel and CSU Bakersfield to the two-day, round-robin tournament. After hosting a trio of matches, the Rebels hit the road for a tourney hosted by the University of Portland. UNLV will face Idaho State on Aug. 31, before squaring off against Tennessee State and Portland on Sept. 1. UNLV returns home for its UNLV Classic on Sept. 7-8 with Gonzaga, Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern in attendance. The Rebels close out the four-week tournament run in Louisville, Ky., at a two-day affair on Sept. 14-15 hosted by the University of Louisville. All three of UNLV opponents – Louisville, Miami and Middle Tennessee State – that weekend made an appearance in the 2011 postseason.
After playing 12 contests in a one-month span, UNLV's schedule will conclude with 17 matches spread out over two months. All but one of those matches - Utah Valley on Sept. 28 - will come against Mountain West competition in home-andaway meetings. Conference action begins with road trips to Air Force and Boise State on Sept. 20 and 22, respectively. From that point forward, the Rebels will only play once or twice per week and alternate home and away matches after every two outings until the middle of November when they will close out the regular season with three straight home contests against Fresno State (Nov. 16), Boise State (Nov. 21) and Air Force (Nov. 23).
New to the conference this season will be the addition of Fresno State and in-state rival Nevada, Reno, both formerly of the WAC. FS and UNR finished fourth and seventh, respectively, in the eight-team league last year.

Head Coach Second Season at UNLV 26th Season Overall
Cindy Fredrick, who has 25 years of head coaching experience at the NCAA Division I level, was named the sixth head coach in UNLV volleyball history on Dec. 22, 2010. "We are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring Cindy on as our head volleyball coach," Livengood said upon Fredrick's hiring. "Having worked with her for many years, I'm sure she will be a great addition to the university community and our athletics department family. She will do a wonderful job advancing our women's volleyball program." In her first season at UNLV, Fredrick went 14-17 and led her squad to the championship match of the 2011 Mountain West Tournament. The Rebels entered the tournament as the seventh seed and racked up two quick victories - 3-0 win over #2 San Diego State and a 3-1 triumph over #3 TCU - before a loss to Colorado State in the finale. She guided Madeline Westman to a 2012 All-MW Team season, while Candice Thomas and Stephanie Thelen (setter) were recognized for their play during the conference tournament. Fredrick came to Las Vegas after spending the 2010 season coaching at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. She has also been the head coach at Weber State (1985-89), Washington State (1989-2004) and Iowa (2004-08). Over her career, she has led her squads to 10 NCAA Tournament appearances with the first occurring in 1988 at Weber State, followed by nine more at Washington State that also included a trip to the Sweet 16 and two to the Elite 8. Overall, she owns a 9-10 record in NCAA Tournament competition. She was named the conference coach of the year on two different occasions - first in 1988 after she led Weber State to a Big Sky Conference championship en route to the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance and an overall record of 32-8. Then, in 1995, she took home Pac-10 Coach of the Year honors. She also earned 1995 AVCA District VIII Coach of the Year recognition, as well. She has notched 20 or more wins seven times - all at Washington State - and also coached three AllAmericans (Sarah Silvernail, Keri Killebrew and Stephanie Pake) and two conference player of the years, Silvernail (Pac-10) and Kim Benesh (Big Sky). In 1992, she led Washington State to a perfect 6-0 record for the National Invitational Volleyball Championship in Kansas City, Mo. All six victories were won by 3-0 sweeps. Overall, she has coached 37 all-conference performers and nine to AVCA All-District VIII/All-West Region honors. More importantly, she has coached 54 student-athletes to academic all-conference recognition and six

to CoSIDA District VIII All-America status. Two Rebels - Madeline Westman and Allison Davies - were recognized for their acadmics by the MW, as both were named to the 2011-12 Scholar-Athlete Award. Westman and Davies were also tabbed to the 2011 Academic AllConference Team along with Thelen, Sekola Falemaka, Daryn Glenn, Taylor Richard and Layne Wilson. While Fredrick was at Luther, the team was 17-17. Prior to that, she was the assistant director of the Wartburg-Waverly Sports and Wellness Center. A 1974 graduate of Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill., Fredrick began coaching volleyball at Davenport Central High School that same year until 1982. She led the school to a state championship in 1981 with a perfect 33-0 record. She followed that up with a three-year stint as a head coach for the United States Volleyball Association Junior Development team in Eastern Iowa. She broke into the collegiate coaching ranks in 1982 when she was hired as an assistant coach at Iowa. She helped guide the Hawkeyes to two third-place finishes in the Big Ten in 1983 and 1984. Fredrick is married to Dr. Mashallah Farokhmanesh, who has been an assistant on her staff throughout her entire career. They have one son, Ali Farokhmanesh, who played basketball for Northern Iowa, including facing UNLV in the NCAA Tournament in 2010.

MASHALLAH FAROKHMANESH Assistant Coach Second Season at UNLV
Farokh comes to UNLV having spent 25 years as an assistant coach on the collegiate level, including 24 at NCAA Division I institutions. Most recently, he was with Fredrick at Luther College after a stint at Wartburg College. During his career, he has helped his teams make 10 NCAA Tournament appearances with the first occurring in 1988 at Weber State, followed by nine more at Washington State that also included a trip to the Sweet 16 and two to the Elite 8. Farokh has extensive experience as both a player and coach. Born in Burojerd, Iran, he was a member of the Pahlavi High School volleyball team for four years, during which time his team won three state championships. While earning his bachelor's degree in physical education from the Teacher Training College in Tehran, Iran, he played on a men's squad that won two college championships and he was honored all four years with all-star recognition.
Farokh left for the United States in 1977 to continue his education and earned his master's degree in physical education at Western Illinois University in 1979. Later, he went on to earn his educational doctorate (EdD) in elementary school physical education in 1985 from Brigham Young University. While at BYU, he continued to compete for and coach the men's volleyball club team for three seasons. Throughout his time in the U.S., he has been active at both USVBA summer camps and clinics as a coach. Farokh and Fredrick first met at a summer camp at Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa. When Fredrick was named as the Weber State head coach (1985-89), Farokh was hired as an assistant. Together the pair earned a Big Sky Conference championship in 1988 and also the school's first NCAA Tournament bid. After four years at Weber State the duo left for Washington State (1989-2004).
Following college, Farokh went on to play for the Iranian National Team. During his seven-year tenure on the squad, he was elected captain and also played in international competition.
In Pullman, Farokh was part of a Cougar program that experienced seven seasons with 20-plus wins. He coached three All-Americans, including the Pac-10 Player of the Year. From 1989 through 2003, he helped lead Washington State to a 278-192 record.
Farokh began his coaching career in his home country of Iran when he was named head volleyball coach for Esfahan High School. During his three-year stint at Esfahan he was also coach of the Iranair Club team.
Farokh and Fredrick, who have been married since 1984, have one son, Ali Farokhmanesh, who played basketball for Northern Iowa, including facing UNLV in the NCAA Tournament in 2010.
NELS RYDBERG
Assistant Coach Second Season at UNLV
Nels Rydberg is in his second year as an assistant coach at UNLV. Rydberg came to UNLV after spending nearly 20 years coaching volleyball on the collegiate, club and high school levels. Most recently, he was an assistant coach at Wright State University (2007-09), where he assisted in all areas of the program, including: recruiting, camp administration, travel arrangement, budget preparation, scouting, statistical evaluation, video analysis, skill development and practice planning.
Rydberg has also been involved with the Storm N West Volleyball Club, Southside Volleyball Club, Athletes in Action men's touring team and Webfoot Juniors Volleyball Club. He has volunteered at the high school level, as well. Additionally, he spent time as a volleyball instructor at Oregon and taught intermediate and advanced classes. He served as a police officer in Pismo Beach, Calif., for three years before coaching at Wright State.
Prior to his two-year stint at Wright State, Rydberg was also an assistant at Arkansas State (2000-02), Oregon (1995-99), Portland State (1994-95) and Cal Poly (1991-94).
Rydberg earned his undergraduate degree in kinesiology from Cal Poly in 1993 and his master's degree in motor behavior at UNLV, in 2011, where he had also functioned as a research assistant and instructor.
Overall, Rydberg has coached 11 NCAA Division I all-conference performers, two NCAA Division II All-Americans and one all-region selection.
Besides his coaching experience on the court, he has contributed to the sport in writing. His article "Basic Motor Learning Principles for Coaching Volleyball" appeared in the August/September 1994 edition of Coaching Volleyball. He was a contributing author to the 1995 book Mental Training and Performance Enhancement Guide for Volleyball Coaches and Players.
Before and during his time at Cal Poly, Rydberg was an assistant coach (Dec. 1990-July 1991) and head coach (Dec. 1991-July 1994) for the SLO Juniors Volleyball Club. He was also a volleyball instructor at Cal Poly, where he taught intermediate, advanced and professional activity classes (1992-94).
Rydberg, a native of San Luis Obispo, Calif., has resided in Las Vegas with his wife, Julie, since 2009.

Opened as a satellite campus in 1957, the southern regional division of the University of Nevada became Nevada Southern University in 1965 and finally evolved into University of Nevada, Las Vegas four years later when the Board of Regents granted it autonomy under the state's higher education system. Men's basketball was the first sport organized at UNLV, opening play in 1958 under head coach and athletic director Michael "Chub" Drakulich. Baseball, also coached by Drakulich, started in 1960 and football came to campus nearly a decade later when head coach Bill Ireland's squad went 8-1 in 1968. Women's club sports such as tennis emerged in 1960 under administrator Alice Mason, but basketball became the first women's varsity sport in 1974. UNLV currently sponsors seven men's and 10 women's athletic programs.

The logo lasted until the early 1970s when a group of black athletes came to Baepler, who was academic vice president at the time, and voiced its displeasure with having a mascot that had a connection with the wrong side of the Civil War. "They said it didn't feel right playing for a school with such a mascot...and I agree," said Baepler. "Southern Nevada has no real ties to the Confederacy so the change wasn't a big concern."
The student senate voted on a new mascot and the human Rebel logo was born. Initially, a Colonial-like Rebel soldier was the official logo and there was talk at one time of changing UNLV's nickname to Minutemen. Essentially there was no recognized UNLV mascot for about a half-decade spilling into the early 1980s. "UNLV was rebelling against the status quo and the two schools' mascots seemed to mimic the Civil War," said former UNLV president, the late, Don Baepler, who later directed the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History on campus. "Reno had a northern looking wolf so we wanted a Confederate wolf."
Beauregard may not be prevalent in today's UNLV athletic events, but he's certainly not gone and forgotten. The original sketch of the wolf was converted into a mid-court painting for basketball games played in the old University gymnasium. Today, visitors can visit the black, white, scarlet and gray logo circle in its original position at what is now the Barrick Museum, which still uses the existing oak hardwood basketball floor to hold its exhibits.

UNLV volleyball had seven student-athletes named to the 2011 Fall Academic All-Mountain West Team, which marked the 12th straight season that at least four achieved the feat. In fact, academic advising has helped produce 81 such honorees since UNLV joined the MW in 1999. Allison Davies and Madeline Westman earned the MW Scholar-Athlete Award for the 2011-12 academic year. It was the second time Westman has been named to the award, while it was the first for Davies. Overall, 29 Rebel student-athletes have been recognized dating back to the 2002-03 academic year. In fact, three former Rebels - Erin Greenwood (2006-09), Kelsey Keeler (2007-10) and Jessica Walters (2006-10) - have met the conference's academic standartds for the Scholar-Athlete Award all four years of their career.
Walters was twice named UNLV’s Most Outstanding Female Athlete for owning the highest cumulative GPA among all female student-athletes. She was also named to ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-District Eight First Teams in 2007 and '08, while Greenwood was selected to the third team in '08. Besides conference and school recognition, the program has achieved national awards, as well. The team was one of 70 NCAA Division I squads to earn the 2007-08 AVCA Team Academic Award for amassing a 3.30 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale. UNLV maintains an academic support system for its student-athletes that is designed to ensure success on and off the fields of play. Academic advisors work with the 17 men’s and women’s sports ensuring student-athletes received personalized care regarding their progress in education.

COX PAVILION
The UNLV volleyball team received a new home in 2001 in the $16.8 million Cox Pavilion. The pavilion is a 78,300 square-foot, multi-purpose, state-ofthe-art venue connected to the Thomas & Mack Center on the UNLV campus. Cox Communications and the Thomas & Mack Center formed a partnership that brought the new facility to UNLV and the Las Vegas Community. As part of a $5 million agreement, Cox Communications secured the naming rights for the facility as well as opportunities for sponsorship and hospitality. Former UNLV President Dr. Carol Harter stated when it opened, “We are pleased that Cox, a relatively new member of the Southern Nevada corporate community, has chosen to take an active role in supporting both academics and athletics at UNLV. The new Cox Pavilion, like Cox’s donation of television equipment and their annual support for a new cable television education channel, will benefit the community in many ways.” The pavilion is a two-level structure. The ground floor features men’s and women’s locker facilities, player lounges and practice courts for basketball and volleyball. The top level is a multi-purpose venue with a seating capacity for 2,800 and features padded, retractable seating throughout. “The Cox Pavilion features the best volleyball venue in the country and our athletes love to play in the bright arena with the home crowd support,” said Allison Keeley, UNLV’s volleyball head coach. “The size creates an intimate viewing venue where our fans feel like they are part of the match. The Lied Athletic Complex and the strength and conditioning program continues to grow in philosophical scope, as well as physical size. The two-level strength facility, the Ernie Becker Sr. Strength & Conditioning Center, includes all new equipment and a plyometric area to best help develop student-athletes. Complete with three offices, two restrooms and a storage area, the 8,500 square-foot deck features free weights, power racks and Olympian platforms. UNLV’s facility houses more than 60 weight stations and Hammer Strength machines. The 1,200 square-foot second level offers stretching and aerobic areas catered to each sport. The room also features a premium sound system to further enhance the workout experience. Just outside the weight room is a newly covered agility drills area which features 3,000 square-foot of artificial turf.

Day-to-day preventative medicine on the campus is made easy with the Marilyn and Si Redd Sports Medicine Complex. The state-of-the-art operation is a major part of the $8.5 million Lied Athletic facility. Made possible by a generous gift of $1.5 million by Marilyn and Si Redd, the athletic training facility incorporates the total scope of sports medicine over and 8,500-square-foot area. Aside from five staff offices, a rehabilitation room houses a dozen pieces of equipment including Cybex stationary bicycles, stair machines and treadmills, all under a natural skylight. The largest area features a dozen tables to offer student-athletes various treatments throughout the day. Taping, padding and bracing all take place in another all-inclusive room. Finally, an aquatic therapy room features three above-ground whirlpools surrounding a 10-feet deep pool for rehabilitative exercises. All of these features make it possible for UNLV student-athletes to rehabilitate injuries without ever needing to leave the Lied Athletic Complex. Other amenities include a physician’s office and exam room to provide daily medical service for student-athletes. A drug-testing facility also is part of the new complex. This expedites medical care because the student-athletes health care is self-contained. Also, UNLV’s academic program and its student athletic trainers benefit from a sports medicine library, study room and conference facility. “This is one of the top complexes in the nation because of the versatility it offers to service student-athletes in every area of sports medicine,” says Kyle Wilson, UNLV’s Director of Athletic Training. “We’re now more efficient, more accessible and more effective in preventing and rehabilitating athletic injuries.”

The Lied Athletic Complex’s 10,000-square-foot, two-sided equipment room gives all 17 UNLV sports the services of an immense facility designed with the student-athlete in mind. In one of the 19 team and staff locker rooms, players and coaches can simply drop off their uniforms at the end of practice or competition. The next day a clean version will be waiting for pickup in personally assigned lockers located in a wall surrounding the equipment room. In the Cox, the volleyball team has its own designated locker room. The locker room features a couch and lockers for each individual player. The coaches have their own separate locker room, as well.

32 FINAL SERVE The UNLV Rebels closed out its season with a Cinderalla-like run through the 2011 Mountain West Volleyball Championship. UNLV entered the three-day tournament as the seventh seed and worked its way to the championship match for the second time in program history. The Rebels swept past the second-seeded San Diego State Aztecs in straight sets (3-0) to advance out of the quarterfinal round. The Scarlet and Gray then rallied from a 1-0 deficit to knock off the third-seeded TCU Horned Frogs in the semifinals. Unfortunately, UNLV's magical run came to an end when it lost to the topseeded Colorado State Rams in the championship match. By virtue of reaching the tournament's finale, UNLV became the lowest seeded team to qualify for the MW Championship since the Utah Utes did so as the fifth seed in 2007. Coincidentally, the Rebels were the Utes opponent in that '07 championship match, which saw UNLV win its first and only MW title.
ALL-TOURNAMENT SQUAD The UNLV Rebels had two of its own, Candice Thomas and Stephanie Thelen (designated setter) named to the 2011 Mountain West Volleyball Championship All-Tournament Team following the squad's play in the three-day competition. Thomas led the Rebels in hitting efficiency with a .368 average and in kills with 35. She had at least six kills in all three matches and topped out with a career-best 20 vs. TCU (Nov. 19). Besides contributing offensively, Thomas had seven blocks and four digs. Thelen led UNLV in assists (109) and assists per set (10.90). She dished out 19 or more helpers in all three contests and tied her season and career high with 56 against TCU (Nov. 19). She also added 21 digs, nine blocks, seven kills and two aces.
WESTMAN EARNS ALL-MW UNLV's Madeline Westman was named to the 2011 Mountain West All-Conference Team, as selected by the league's eight head coaches.
2011 REVIEW (3.94, undeclared), Sekola Falemaka (3.06, undeclared), Daryn Glenn (3.46, undeclared), Taylor Richard (3.26, criminal justice), Stephanie Thelen (3.09, undeclared), Madeline Westman (3.90, communication studies) and Layne Wilson (3.70, hospitality management). Davies, Glenn, Richard, Thelen and Wilson are first-time honorees, while Falemaka and Westman were recognized last year, as well.

The UNLV Rebels played a total of 31 matches in 2011 with 11 going to five sets. The 11 five-setters were a program high and surpassed the previous mark (eight) set three times (2003, '05 and '10). UNLV owned a 5-6 mark in marathon matches and started the year off 3-0 before it dropped six of its last eight. The Rebels reeled off wins against Morehead State (Sept. 2), Northwestern State (Sept. 3) and Southern Utah (Sept. 9) early in the season. They lost their first five-setter to Cal State Northridge (Sept. 10) before they regrouped with a win over Fresno State (Sept. 16). After that match, the squad lost four straight before they rebounded with a come-from-behind win at CSU Bakersfield (Oct. 23) to even its record at 5-5 on the year. Unfortunately, they lost their five-setter on the road to Boise State in the regular-season finale.
WINNING THE FIRST SET The UNLV Rebels owned a record of 11-3 when they've jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead after they claimed the first set of a match. The team's only losses came to Cal State Northridge (Sept. 10), San Diego State (Oct. 21) and Boise State (Nov. 12). Unfortunately, the team did not fare so well when they lost the first set. In that department, the team was 3-14 with the wins coming against Morehead State (Sept. 2), Eastern Washington (Sept. 10) and TCU (Nov. 19).
Westman led the Rebels in hitting (.323), total blocks (62) and assisted blocks (50) in conference play. She finished second on the squad in kills (135) and solo blocks (12). In 14 league matches, she threw down at least five kills 13 times and hit .250 or better in 12 outings. For the year, she led the team in all three blocking categories and hitting efficiency (.300) this season.

ACADEMIC RECOGNITION
The UNLV Rebels owned a record of 8-1 when they took a 2-1 lead in a match. The lone loss was to Wyoming (Oct. 1). On the other hand, the team was 1-10 when they fell behind 2-1. The only win came at CSU Bakersfield (Oct. 22).
The UNLV volleyball program had seven studentathletes named to the 2011 Fall Academic AllMountain West Conference Team, including two repeat selections, the league announced. The Rebels on the list included Allison Davies
The UNLV Rebels owned a record of 8-0 when they took a 2-0 lead in a match, but on the flip side, they were winless (0-9) when their opponent won the first two sets. If the match was tied at 1-all, UNLV's record was 6-7.
WINNING TWO OF THREE
The UNLV Rebels amassed 1,492 kills on 2011 with four players tallying 200 or more. Makenzie Moea'i led all attackers with 330 kills for a teambest 2.92 kills per set. Madeline Westman, who owned a team-best .290 hitting efficiency, had 286 kills, which ranked second. Candice Thomas and Daryn Glenn rounded out the quartet with 236 and 232 kills apiece, respectively.
The UNLV Rebels amassed 1,393 assists in 2011. Stephanie Thelen led all players with 1,153 of the team's assists. Thelen owned a 9.37 assists per-set average.
The UNLV Rebels amassed 129 aces in 2011 with six players tallying 13 or more. Daryn Glenn led all servers with 30 aces. Stephanie Thelen was second with 21, while Madeline Westman had 18. Taylor Richard (17), Allison Davies (17) and Sekola Falemaka (13) round out the six-pack.
DIGGING THEM OUT The UNLV Rebels amassed 1,757 digs in 2011 with five players tallying 200 or more. Allison Davies led all defenders with 398 digs for a teambest 3.37 digs per set. Daryn Glenn was second with 260, while Stephanie Thelen and Taylor Richard finished closely to each other with 245 and 240 aces, respectively. Sekola Falemaka rounded out the quintet with 207 digs of her own.
BLOCKING THEM OUT The UNLV Rebels amassed 74 solo blocks and 406 assisted blocks in 2011 with five players tallying 40 or more. Madeline Westman and Candice Thomas were first and second, respectively in blocks. Westman led the team in total blocks (134) and assisted blocks (112), while Thomas was tops in solo blocks (23). The former contributed 22 of the solo variety, while the latter had 110 in all and 87 assisted stuffs. Stephanie Thelen finished third overall with 81 total blocks (five solo), while Daryn Glenn (54) and Makenzie Moea'i (44) rounded out the quintet.
FREDRICK COACHED #800 UNLV head coach Cindy Fredrick coached her 800th-career match on Oct. 22 against CSU Bakersfield. Fredrick, who completed her 26th season as a head coach, has led five programs at either the NCAA Division I or II level and has been named a conference coach of the year twice and a region coach of the year once. With the conclusion of the 2011 season, she has coached a total of 809 games. Fredrick spent the majority of her time at Washington State University (1989-2003) where she coached 470 matches in 15 years. She coached a total of 308 matches at Weber State, Iowa and Luther.

50 THIS IS THE MOUNTAIN WEST The Mountain West was conceived on May 26, 1998, when the presidents of eight institutions -- Air Force, BYU, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming -- decided to form a new NCAA Division I FBS intercollegiate athletic conference. The split from a former 16-team conference re-established continuity and stability among the membership within the new league and signaled the continuation of its tradition-rich, longstanding athletic rivalries. Three of the MW's eight original members have been conference rivals since the 1960s (New Mexico, Wyoming and Colorado State), while San Diego State (1978) and Air Force (1980) were longtime members as well. UNLV and TCU entered the fold in 1996 and the Rebels continued as one of the original eight institutions that formed the MW in 1999. With conference realignment sweeping the nation in recent years, the MW has been proactive in addressing membership changes. Boise State joined the Mountain West in 2011-12, followed by Fresno State and Nevada, Reno on July 1, 2012. Also on July 1, 2012, Hawai'i became a football-only member of the Conference. On May 4, 2012, the Mountain West announced the additions of San Jose State and Utah State as full-time members effective July 1, 2013. From its inception in 1999, the Mountain West has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics, while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. Progressive in its approach, the MW continues to cultivate opportunities for student-athletes to compete at the highest level, while fostering academic achievement and sportsmanship. The Mountain West is noted for its geographic diversity. Some of the most beautiful terrain and landscapes in the nation can be found within its boundaries, including the majestic Rocky Mountain range, which borders four MW institutions (Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State and New Mexico). The high plains of Wyoming (elevation 7,220 feet - the highest Division I campus in the nation) contrast with the desert cities of Las Vegas and Reno, home to UNLV and Nevada, Reno while Fresno State and San Diego State add a West Coast influence with their locations in Central and Southern California. The inclusion of the Hawai'i football program extends the Mountain West footprint to the beautiful islands in the Pacific Ocean. Mountain West members have participated in 51 bowl games under the league umbrella, including four appearances in BCS games. The MW has earned 61 postseason bids in men's basketball, including 33 NCAA Tournament appearances and two NIT Final Four berths. MW women's basketball has tallied 57 postseason slots, including 31 NCAA bids, five Sweet 16 appearances and one Elite Eight berth since 2000. Craig Thompson was the Mountain West's first employee when he was named commissioner on Oct. 15, 1998. Ever since, Thompson has navigated the newest NCAA Division I conference through the ever-changing landscape of intercollegiate athletics. As the league enters its 14th season of competition in 2012-13, Thompson continues to create and improve the opportunities for Mountain West institutions and student-athletes to be successful both academically and athletically. His leadership and vision have helped the conference enhance its television revenue and exposure through revolutionary agreements with CBS Sports Network and Comcast to become the first major collegiate athletic conference to launch a dedicated sports channel featuring exclusive programming around its athletic programs. Thompson has been instrumental in strenghening the position of the Mountain West in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) structrue. In 2006, he spearheaded an effort that resulted in better access for the MW and more than doubled the annual BCS revenue on an annual basis for non-automatic-qualifying conferences. The MW has been steadfast in its effort to find a way to make the BCS system fair for all universities. Through its 13 years of competition, the Mountain West has participated in 51 bowl games, amassing a 31-20 (.608) all-time record in those contests. Over the last eight seasons, the MW has captured the Bowl Challenge Cup four times and owns the best win percentage in bowl games among the 11 FBS conferences. Prior to his current role, Thompson served as the commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference for nearly eight years and as the only commissioner of the American South Conference prior to its merger of the two leagues in 1991.

Following graduation, he spent two years as assistant sports information director at Kansas State University. He then spent three years as director of public relations and promotions for the NBA's Kansas City Kings. Thompson and his wife, Carla, have a son (Ted) and a daugther (Emma).

Located in the heart of one of the world’s most vibrant and dynamic cities, UNLV has matured along with the Las Vegas area. With its Performing Arts Center, the campus is the cultural hub of Southern Nevada. World-class orchestras and soloists, dance and theater arts combine to provide a broad selection of concerts and stage productions. The Barrick Lecture Series and several campus organizations bring noted speakers to the University, and local and visiting artists show their works in the Donna Beam Fine Art Gallery. UNLV has excellent athletic facilities as well, many open for student and public use. Opened in 1957 as the southern regional division of the University of Nevada with a total of 28 students, UNLV now is home to more than 27,000 students coming from every county in Nevada, all 50 U.S. states and 88 countries. Much of UNLV’s tremendous expansion is the result of support from the Nevada Legislature and the state’s taxpayers. Private donors have played an important role as well. These gifts support new facilities and programs and, most important, provide the scholarship incentives that bring Nevada’s best and brightest student scholars to campus. UNLV operates an on-campus Center for Business and Economic Research, Center for Economic Education, Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies (in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency), Desert Biology Research Center, Center for Survey Research, Nuclear Waste Transportation Research Center and other research and public-service centers. Offering 108 undergraduate programs and 137 graduate tracts, UNLV graduated a class of 5,500 last year. The University operates on a semester system and is a member of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the Council of Graduate Schools, the American Council of Education and the Western College Association. All of the University’s academic programs are fully accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, and many programs have received further accreditation from independent national accreditation bodies.

Dr. Neal J. Smatresk was appointed president of the University of Nevada,Las Vegas on Aug. 6, 2009. Today, he leads a campus that is committed toserving Nevada by creating an educated workforce and forging communityand business partnerships to move our state economy forward. Smatresk emphasizes UNLV’s role as a first choice institution dedicatedto educational access and success for diverse students. Under Smatresk’sdirection, UNLV established the Academic Success Center, which is livingup to its name by helping students identify the right majors, succeed intheir classes, and graduate on time. Student athletes are advised throughthe center, and are excelling academically. UNLV is a collaborative university that crosses internal and external boundaries.A testament to Smatresk’s vision is UNLV’s partnership with the highlyrespected Brookings Institution to establish Brookings Mountain West, thenational think tank’s first foray this side of the Mississippi. Throughthis partnership and a commitment to respond to the state’s workforcedemands, UNLV is driving research and innovation needed to diversify theregion’s economic base and provide critically needed services for a dynamicregion. Smatresk is a scientist by training and received his Ph.D. in zoology fromthe University of Texas at Austin in 1980. Following postdoctoral workat the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Smatresk joined theUniversity of Texas, Arlington (UTA) department of biology in 1982. Inhis 22 years at UTA, he served as chair of biology and later dean of science,until his appointment as the chief academic officer at the University ofHawaii at Manoa in 2004. During his time there, Hawaii’s flagship universityentered the ranks of the top 25 federally funded institutions, gained threeNational Academy of Science members, and received recognition from theChinese Ministry of Education as a Confucius Institute, an honor sharedby only 11 other U.S. institutions. His career at UNLV began in 2007 asexecutive vice president and provost, where he was responsible for theleadership and administration of all academic and research programs, spanning15 colleges and two professional schools. President Smatresk has received numerous teaching awards, and his researchin cardiorespiratory physiology has resulted in more than 50 papers andbook chapters and grants from the National Science Foundation and NationalInstitutes of Health. His undergraduate alma mater, Gettysburg College,awarded him its Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award in 2011.

Bringing with him a wealth of experience and the reputation as one of the nation’s top administrators, Jim Livengood was introduced as UNLV’s 11th full-time Director of Athletics on Dec. 17, 2009. He wasted no time getting to work, as less than two weeks later he hired Bobby Hauck as the 10th head coach in Rebel football history. Just three months after that it was announced that a new, state-of-the-art basketball practice facility, the Mendenhall Center, would be built and that stunning addition to the department was dedicated in January 2012. In spring of 2011, Livengood chose Dave Rice to be head coach of the Runnin’ Rebel men’s basketball team and the veteran AD has also overseen the hiring of new coaches in UNLV sports such as baseball, softball and women’s volleyball. This past June, the State Board of Regents approved a new contract for Livengood that will keep him running the department through at least December 2015. Livengood came to UNLV following a successful tenure of more than 15 years at the University of Arizona where he oversaw an athletics program that annually competed for championships not only in the Pac-10 Conference but also at a national level, maintained a high academic
standard for its student-athletes and continually operated its $43 million budget in the black. His fiscal leadership helped Arizona remain one of the lone black-ink athletics programs among a small handful of institutions that rely exclusively on generated funds and do not receive state-appropriated monies. During his time in Tucson, he served as the Pacific-10 Conference president, chair of the Pac-10 Athletic Directors Revenue Sharing Committee and a member of the conference’s Bowl Committee and Basketball Tournament Subcommittee. He also was a member of the Rose Bowl Management Committee, the NCAA Fellows program, NACDA President, and chair of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee, on which he served five years. His work at Arizona and its ascension on the national level earned him an Athletic Director of the Year Award from the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics in 2006 for Division I-A. Livengood initiated Campaign Arizona, which raised more than $130 million for athletic facility improvements and endowments while the Wildcats maintained a top-25 competitive record in the NACDA Directors’ Cup (formerly Sears Cup), including high rankings of sixth in 1993-94, fourth in 1994-95, seventh in 1995-96, sixth in both 1996-97 and 1997-98 and ninth in 2001-02. That record reflects success throughout Arizona’s broad-based program, highlighted by participation in the 1994 and 2001 NCAA Men’s Final Four and champions of the 1997 NCAA Men’s National Basketball Tournament. Arizona also won the 1994, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2006 and 2007 NCAA Women’s Softball College World Series titles, the 1996 and 2000 NCAA Women’s Golf title and the 2008 men’s and women’s NCAA Swimming Championships. Livengood is a member of the NCAA Fellows Program to mentor new athletic directors, has served as a member of the NCAA Peer Review Team from 1994-99, the NCAA Gender Equity Task Force, and the Women’s Committee on Athletics. He has been a member of the NACDA Preseason Football Games Committee since

2000 and was a member of the NACDA Strategic Planning Committee from 1999-2001. He served as NACDA president in 1998, and in 1999 was named Division I-A Athletic Director of the Year. He is also a member of the Division I-A Athletic Directors Association, having served as president of that association in 1998. Livengood spent six years as the Athletics Director at Washington State University from 1988-93 where he developed what is still widely regarded as a model gender equity program. In addition he laid the groundwork for a studentathlete wellness center that is regarded as one of the finest in the nation. Livengood began his administrative career in 1980 as the Associate Director for Development and Public Relations at Washington State before becoming the Athletics Director at Southern Illinois, a position he held until returning to Washington State. Born March 28, 1945, in Walla Walla, Wash., he received his bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University in 1968 and completed his fifth-year education requirement for teaching certification at Central Washington University in 1972. He taught and served as an assistant football coach and track coach at Moses Lake High School in Washington in 1968-69, and as head football and basketball coach and counselor at Ephrata High School in Washington from 197280 before moving into athletics administration. Jim and his wife, Linda, have two grown children, Michelle, a lawyer in Flagstaff, and Jeremy, who resides in Phoenix. Both children are University of Arizona graduates. Michelle earned her law degree in May 2000 and Jeremy graduated in December1999. The Livengoods are the proud grandparents of four: new grandson Dylan and twins Emma and Isabella (3), born to Michelle and her husband, Jack Murphy, who is the men’s basketball head coach at NAU; and another recent addition, grandson James, born to Jeremy and his wife, Megan, in 2011.

Seven different Rebel sports will be represented during ceremonies this fall as the UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2012 will be honored Oct. 12. Six former Rebel standout players, one head coach and a distinguished contributor will join one team in being inducted the night before the Battle for the Fremont Cannon football game between UNLV and Nevada, Reno. Born in 1987, UNLV’s Athletics Hall of Fame will now grow to 114 members strong. Under the hall’s bylaws, former student-athletes must have completed their eligibility at least 10 years earlier to be selected. Coaches and administrators must have stopped working at the University five years previous. All classes now enter on a biennial basis. The winningest coach in UNLV tennis history, FRED ALBRECHT led the Rebel netters from 1974-83 and compiled a record of 230-80 for a winning percentage of .742. A longtime administrator on campus, Albrecht was called upon to serve as Interim Athletics Director in both 1995 and 2003 during searches for permanent replacements. He retired from UNLV in 2007 after 38 years with a final title of vice president for university and community relations. LORENA DIACONESCU is arguably the Rebels women’s swimming program’s most decorated athlete. She won three consecutive Conference Swimmer of the Year awards from 2000-02 while setting school records in six separate events. Diaconescu earned All-America in 2000 and was honorable mention one year later. Winner of eight MW individual crowns as well as seven relay titles, she was also a two-time Olympian for her home country of Romania. The highest-scoring basketball player in UNLV history – men’s or women’s – LINDA FROHLICH finished with 2,355 points and a 21.2 PPG average in her dominating hoops career. The native of Oldendorf, Germany, was named USBWA National Freshman of the Year in 1999, AP Honorable Mention All-America as a sophomore and junior and then Third Team as a senior. Those seasons also saw Frohlich win Mountain West Player of the Year honors three straight years from 2000-02 before going on to a pro career in the WNBA and overseas. Entering the Hall of Fame as a Distinguished Contributor is noted Las Vegas artist and illustrator MIKE MILLER. During the 1980s, Miller created and named the cartoon man with the long moustache known as “Hey Reb.” Miller was paid a single dollar for his work, which eventually helped UNLV vault to the top spot in college apparel licensing. Still the leading Runnin’ Rebel scorer in history, EDDIE OWENS was the emerging program’s second AllAmerican in men’s basketball when he was tabbed First Team by a pair of outlets as a junior in 1976. A magical se-
nior season saw him star as part of the so-called “Hardway Eight” team that gained fame by setting NCAA records for most points in a season, most 100-point games and most consecutive 100-point games en route to the school’s first Final Four appearance. JACINT SMION turned in a career in the water that rivaled any in school history. The Mountain West Swimmer of the Year three consecutive seasons earned All-America honors at the 2000 NCAA Championships while also being honorable mention in two relays. His fourth All-America finish came in 2002. Simon won 10 conference championships as an individual and one on a relay team and swam for his home nation of Hungary in the 2000 Summer Olympics. AMIE STEWART was a dominant pitcher for dominant softball program in the mid-1990s. A second team All-America selection as a senior in 1995, her 30-9 mark is still the school record for wins a season. She led her team all the way to the Women’s College World Series and tossed two complete games while finishing with a .95 ERA en route to becoming the only Rebel to be named to a WCWS All-Tournament Team. Arguably the top cornerback in school history, KEVIN THOMAS still holds numerous school and conference defensive records. The first player in school history to start 46 games, Thomas was the first defensive player from UNLV to earn All-America status in 26 years when he was named Third Team by Football News and Fourth Team by Sporting News. After helping his team win the Las Vegas Bowl as a junior, he became the program’s second three-time first team all-conference honoree and he was named the MW Defensive Player of the Year in 2001. The 1984 UNLV FOOTBALL TEAM was the first of two in school history to win a conference championship and its 11-2 overall record included a victory over Toledo in the California Bowl. Going undefeated in the PCAA, the talent-rich squad featured the conference Offensive Player of the Year in All-America punter/quarterback Randall Cunningham; the Defensive Player of the Year in lineman Aaron Moog; and the Coach of the Year in Harvey Hyde. Also being honored at the ceremony is the 2012 winner of the Silver Rebel Award -- former UNLV quarterback and longtime ESPN personality KENNY MAYNE.

Deputy Director of Athletics Jerry Koloskie, Deputy Director of Athletics, served as Interim Athletics Director from August 2009 until December of that year, when Jim Livengood was named Director of Athletics. Prior to that, Koloskie spent 13 years as Senior Associate Athletics Director at UNLV. A member of the athletics department for the past 30 years, Koloskie is directly responsible for overseeing all internal functions of the athletics department and serves as the sport administrator for men’s basketball and volleyball, along with the athletic training and athletic equipment areas. He is also the athletics department’s liason to IMG College. He earned his master’s degree in physical education from Iowa State University in 1981 and moved to UNLV in 1982 to become Co-Head Athletic Trainer. In 1983 he became Head Athletic Trainer for all intercollegiate athletic teams at UNLV until moving into administration in 1997. He and his wife, Annette, have three children: sons John and Jim, and a daughter, Megan, as well as a granddaughter, Kaydence.
Senior Associate Athletics Director for Development
Julio Freire is in his third year with UNLV Athletics serving as Senior Associate Athletics Director for Development, where he oversees the Rebel Athletic Fund and Athletic Ticket Operations. He also serves as the sport administrator for the men’s golf program, one of the top programs in the nation. Prior to UNLV, Freire served as Associate Athletics Director for Development at the University of Arizona, where he worked for three years. He has also served as the Associate Director of Athletics at Tennessee Tech University where he played a key role in the department’s strategic planning and fundraising efforts. Before that, he served as Associate Athletics Director for Operations at Ohio University. A native of Tucson, Ariz., Freire earned his bachelor’s degree in education in 1990 from Arizona State University, where he was a member of the Sun Devil cross country and track and field teams. He also holds master’s degrees in counseling and education administration. Before entering college athletics, he was a counselor, teacher, coach, and assistant principal (in charge of athletics at the high school level) before serving as a middle school principal. Julio and his wife, Cherie, have two children - Christopher and Gabriella.

D.J. Allen is in his third year as Senior Associate Athletics Director of Communications for UNLV Athletics. Prior to his current role, he was involved with the Runnin’ Rebel basketball program in various marketing and community outreach capacities for five seasons (2005-10). Allen currently oversees the department’s marketing, media relations and community outreach efforts. A native of Southern Nevada and lifelong UNLV Rebel fan, Allen founded and ran a Las Vegas Valley-based public relations and advertising agency for nearly a decade prior to joining UNLV Athletics. He also co-authored the book “The Xs & Os of Success: A Playbook for Leaders in Business and Life” (with former Runnin’ Rebel coach Lon Kruger) and serves on a number of community organizations (including being a founding member and vice chair of the Dave Rice Foundation). Allen graduated from UNLV in 1996 with a communications degree and later earned his master’s of business administration from UNLV in 2002. He and his wife, Stacey (who also earned two degrees from UNLV), have two children: Bailey and Daniel.
Terry Cottle is in his 29th year in the UNLV Athletics Department. He spent 11 years as Associate Athletics Director and now is Senior Associate Athletics Director for Administration. Cottle serves as the day-to-day administrator for the UNLV football program and also oversees the tennis and track & field/cross country teams. A former Rebel football recruiting coordinator and assistant coach, Cottle spent 10 years on the football coaching staff before moving into an administrative capacity in 1994. A four-year starter at quarterback at St. Mary’s College in Moraga, Calif., Cottle earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1980 before receiving his master’s degree in education from UNLV in 1985. Cottle and his wife, Catherine, have four children: Jessica, Ashley, Carly and Jason.

Senior Associate Athletics Director Senior Woman Administrator
Senior Associate Athletics Director for Compliance
Dr. Lisa Kelleher is in her 21st season as UNLV’s Senior Woman Administrator and also serves as Senior Associate Athletics Director. In her position, Kelleher works with the Assistant Athletics Director to oversee operations and facilities for the department, provides administrative oversight for the dayto-day operations of women’s basketball, women’s golf, and men’s and women’s soccer, and teaches Step UP!, a bystander intervention program, for the department. She also ensures Title IX compliance for the 10 women’s sports programs and oversees department diversity initiatives. In addition, Kelleher is the Chair of the UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame Board of Directors committee inducting the Class of 2012 this fall. She serves on the NCAA Division I Leadership Council and the Women’s Basketball Recruiting subcommittee, Division I Women’s Golf Committee, the Mountain West Executive Committee, and as the MW administrative liaison to women’s golf, and as the UNLV Student-Athlete Affairs Program Coordinator and UNLV Women of Excellence Athletic Fund Administrator. A 1979 graduate of Miami (Ohio) University, Kelleher earned her master’s degree from the University of Arizona in 1980. She earned her doctorate in the UNLV Higher Education Leadership program in May, 2011. Kelleher and her husband, Peter, have four daughters: Molly, married to Jeremy Dutton, Bridget, Megan, a freshman Film Studies major at UNLV, and Tara.
Eric Toliver is in his 22nd year at UNLV and became a Senior Associate Athletics Director in 2010. Toliver began his career at UNLV as an academic advisor in the Student Development Center before becoming the head athletic academic advisor for football and basketball through 1997. In 1998, Toliver was appointed Compliance Coordinator and became Associate Athletics Director in 2000. A 1992 graduate of Western State College (Co.), Toliver’s responsibilities include overseeing all aspects of NCAA Compliance issues and conducting internal and external investigations to ensure that UNLV’s 17 Division I sports, staff and coaches remain in compliance with NCAA regulations. Toliver, currently serves of the NCAA Division I Recruiting & Personnel Cabinet and has previously served as an appointed member of the NCAA Division I Amateurism Fact- Finding Committee, NCAA Division I Awards, Benefits, Expenses and the Financial Aid Cabinet and the NCAA Division I Softball Committee. In addition, Toliver has oversight of the UNLV’s Strength & Conditioning staff, baseball, softball, co-ed cheer and Rebel Girls program, Student-Athlete Academic Advising Services (SAAS) and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Toliver also responsible for adjudicating all student-athlete conduct and discipline related matters and serves as the chair of the institution’s Compliance Committee.
