FACILITIES
PETER JOHANN MEMORIAL FIELD The dedication of Peter Johann Memorial Soccer Field during the 1983 season marked a special occasion for all those who were involved with the building of UNLV’s first on-campus soccer facility. Despite the fact that UNLV soccer has been around since 1974, Rebel teams in the past never truly had a “home field” to call their own. And, when former men’s soccer head coach Barry Barto assumed his position prior to the 1982 season, building an on-campus soccer field became a priority. Barto approached then-athletics director Brad Rothermel to work out a solution to the problem and the two settled on the current location, where the old softball field had previously existed. Once the site was finalized, a huge community effort was instrumental in the building of the soccer field. The field is named after the late son of Kenneth F. Johann, a real estate businessman who has lived in Las Vegas for more than 40 years. Johann has been a strong 4
supporter of Rebel soccer and he and his wife, Alice, set up a scholarship fund in memory of their son. Thus, Johann was more than happy to be a part of the overall community effort. Johann Field played host to the 1983 ISAA Senior Bowl All-Star Game where the West team posted a 4-0 victory. Numerous international matches have also been played on its pitch and it is also the site of the annual UNLV/Nike Soccer Classic for both the men’s and women’s squads. The facility has also played host to three Las Vegas Soccer Spectaculars. The inaugural contest in 2002 featured the WUSA’s San Jose CyberRays and the San Diego Spirit, while in the spring of 2003, the Boston Breakers took on San Jose. The final spectacular was in March of 2003, between UNLV and the Mexican Olympic Team, who had just claimed a spot in the 2004 Athens Games. In the spring of 2007, a sellout crowd watched the first-ever MLS contest on the UNLV campus, as Real 2012 UNLV WOMEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE
PETER JOHANN MEMORIAL FIELD Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids played to a 0-0 draw in an exhibition contest on March 31. The women’s soccer team reached its 50th victory on its home field in the quarterfinals of the 2005 MW Tournament and three days later won the tournament championship, the first-ever won by a UNLV squad at Johann Field, with a 1-0 overtime victory over New Mexico in the title game. The women’s team has hosted a total of four MW championships at Johann Field, and made the championship game in two of the four tournaments (2001 and 2005). With the addition of endzone seats in 1997, the grandstands now offer seating for approximately 2,500 spectators in an open seating arrangement, and the facility boasts natural grass, a press box, and lights for night matches. The facility was most recently upgraded during the summer of 2006, as a $300,000 renovation led to a new irrigation system as well as new sod and grass for the field. Generally regarded as one of the top college soccer facilities in the West, Johann Field celebrates its 30th season in 2012.
The MW Tournament has been held at UNLV in 2001, 2002, 2005 and 2008.

Finally, an aquatic therapy room features three above-ground whirlpools surrounding a 10-feet deep pool for rehabilitative exercises. All of these features make it possible for UNLV student-athletes to rehabilitate injuries without ever needing to leave the confines of the Lied Athletic Complex. This expedites medical care because the student-athletes’ health care is self-contained. Also, UNLV’s academic program and its student athletic training benefit from a sports medicine library, study room and conference facility. Providing the best possible preventative and rehabilitative care, the UNLV soccer athletic training staff is headed by Director of Athletic Training Kyle Wilson. The trainer for this year’s team is Cierra Boots. Made possible by a generous gift of $1.5 million by Marilyn and Si Redd, the Lied Athletic complex’s athletic training facility incorporates the total scope of sports medicine over an 8,500-square-foot area. Aside from five staff offices, a rehabilitation room houses a dozen pieces of equipment including Cybex stationary bicycles, stair machines and treadmills, all under a natural skylight.

Q & A WITH MICHAEL COLL Q: What first got you first involved in soccer? A: I had no choice really, where I come from, that’s what you do when you grow up, is to play soccer. I remember the first actual team I tried out for was my grade school team, and I didn’t make it, I was 10. I thought I was awesome, and it was the first time someone told me I wasn’t. That was the first sign of my selfmotivation, I made sure I was on the team the next year.
Q: What is your top soccer highlight thus far in your life, either as a player or a coach? A: Representing my country. I’ve represented my country at different age groups, but every time it’s the same, the pride you take when you walk out in your uniform, behind the flag, it’s indescribable. If I had to pick one national team event, I would pick the 1993 game with Ireland against Germany in the World University games in Buffalo (N.Y.). That was the first time I played for Ireland in a foreign country.
NOTES ON COLL UNLV Head Coach • Became the Rebels’ fifth head coach on April 19, 2012
As a Player • Two-time All-Big Ten selection for Penn State, earned allregion honors as well • Played for Ireland in three World University Games (1993, 1995, 1997)
As a Coach • Assistant coach for eight years for Penn State (2004-11) • Penn State won eight Big Ten championships in his eight years, and also reached the NCAA Sweet 16 five of the eight years, as well as a trip to the national semifinals in 2005 • Three years as head coach for Saint Francis University (2001-03) Year 2001 2002 2003 Totals

Q: What are your goals for UNLV for the up- players will have to want to be their best every single coming season and over the next five years? day, and the coaches will have to keep coming up with new ways to get the best out of them. A: We want to challenge every year and hopefully, win the Mountain West. A five-year challenge would be to win the Mountain West more than once. And I want teams to get excited to play against us and schedule us, and for out-of-conference teams to say, “Well, let’s schedule UNLV, that’s a good team, they’re ranked, they’re at the top of their conference.” I want to put us on the map, stronger than we’ve been in the past.
Q: What else is needed or necessary to turn UNLV into a consistent top-25 program? A: We have to get 25-26 players who are absolutely determined every day that they are at this university to be the very best soccer player they can be. And we’ve got to recruit top players, hopefully we can convince the top players in Las Vegas to stay here, because Las Vegas from a soccer standpoint is a very healthy city from a soccer standpoint. And we have to reach out to the other club teams, not just here in the West, but teams in the Midwest, and bring in high-caliber elite players to come join us here. To be a contender, the
WWW.UNLVREBELS.COM
Q: With youth soccer being big in the local community, do you see that as an advantage in helping to build more support for the team? A: There are so many kids playing, we’ll do what we can to get them out here. But looking at our attendance, and to be top 50 in the nation, I think we’re on par with a lot of BCS level schools, between 600-1,000 for a home game.
Q: What style will the Rebels be playing under you? A: We will try to be more offensive-minded. My college soccer coach had one good saying which has stuck with me, even while I was a player and definitely now that I’m a coach. He said, on good days, we’ll play good soccer, and on bad days, we’ll try to play good soccer. I’ve always liked that saying, and I think that the same will be applicable here.

A Las Vegas native, Sobrero was recently on the staff at New Mexico State University through May of 2012. She helped start the program at NMSU and began as a graduate assistant in 2009. After serving as interim head coach for the Aggies during a four-month period in 2011 (Jan.April), she was promoted to assistant coach in the spring of 2011. The Aggies were 26-25-7 during her three seasons in Las Cruces, and her duties included assisting with every facet of the program, including daily operations, recruiting, travel accommodations, budget, academics and onfield direction. Sobrero also served as coach for the New Mexico State ODP U-14 team (since 2010), and was the freshman girls soccer coach for Clovis High School in 2005 and 2006.
Carr is a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, where he was a four-year starter for the Keydets, a team captain and a member of the Southern Conference All-Academic Team. He received his bachelor of arts degree in history in May of 2003, a master’s of science degree in education from Elmira College in June of 2006, and a master’s of science degree in athletic coaching education from West Virginia in 2012. 2012 SEASON OUTLOOK With a new coach and a new direction, it’s the dawn of a new era for the Rebel soccer program After a run of four straight years without a league championship or a NCAA tournament appearance, it was becoming clear the Rebel soccer program needed a change. That change is now here, as UNLV hired long time Penn State assistant Michael Coll to take over at the helm of the Rebels, with the hopes of ushering in “A New Dawn” for UNLV women’s soccer. One only needs to look at the team bench to see how different the direction will be this year, as for the first time in 13 years, there will be a completely new coaching staff as well, with two new assistants coming aboard (Mark Carr and Cortney Sobrero). It’s a staff that will be charged with returning a winning tradition to the Rebels, after suffering two losing seasons over the last three years, while posting an overall 24-27-9 record. While there will be no quick fix, Coll feels the first step begins with finding more contributors on offense. “In losing our top scorer from last year (Katherine Orellana, seven goals, 19 points), we hope that we have several players from different positions step up. We can’t just rely on strikes, we need our midfielders and wide players to contribute and score some goals as well.” Two players that Coll feels could handle that challenge are senior Macy Jo Harrison and junior Jenn Wolfe, who also happen to be the top returning scorers from last year. Junior midfielder Courtney Botelho is another Rebel that Coll hopes will become more involved in the offense. Other players that are expected to rise to the challenge of leadership on the field this season include senior defender Caitlin Allen, senior midfielder Julie Owens and junior goalkeeper Kylie Wassel. Coll notes, however, that players 1-24 all have to be leaders for the team to be successful this year. “Freshmen can be leaders, defenders can be a leaders. A player could be a leader in their class, everyone needs to have that mindset going into the season.” Another change the Rebels might see under Coll is a change of formation. After having played a 4-3-3 system the past few years, Coll is considering other formations, partly depending on the strengths the nine newcomers will bring to the team. “We’ll look at our team strengths depending on our individuals, and use a formation that will best take advantage of their talents.”
also scored three goals last year (along with three assists for nine points), and is one of the top ball strikers on the squad. Those newcomers will be Meaghan Pasbrig (Chandler, Ariz.), Gaby Vazquez (Woodburn, Ore.), Hayley Wilson (San Jose, Calif.), Brittany Cohen (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Alexis Peterson (Bountiful, Utah). All four are expected to compete in the preseason for spots in the regular game rotation up front, as well as challenge for a starting spot.
MIDFIELDERS
Harrison highlights the returnees in the middle of the field, but is not the only returning starter. Botelho and sophomores Erica Meier, Denali Murnan and Julie Owens all return for the Rebels. However, those final four only combined for seven goals during the season while also dishing out eight assists. That includes five from Botelho. Another Rebel that will depth to the position are is junior Amanda Kaufman. New to the group is a
FORWARDS
The Rebels again will be inexperienced up front, with Wolfe the only forward on the roster to have ever started a collegiate contest. While Wolfe did post eight points last year off three goals and two assists, UNLV will need to find production from a quartet of freshmen that will play at the position. One midfielder that could make the move to the front as well is Harrison, who

DEFENSE
While the Rebels have traditionally boasted one of the top defensive groups in the conference, UNLV comes into this season having lost three of last year’s starters. The good news however is that Justine Sauder, a fifth-year player with 33 starts under her belt, comes back for her final season after using a medical redshirt in 2011. Sauder will be joined by one of the top defenders in the Mountain West, as Allen was a second-team all-conference selection a year ago. Her strong play on the ball and in anchoring the back line has been crucial for the Rebels over her career. Just as with the forward class, the upperclassmen will be called upon early to play significant minutes at the defender position. Second-year players Kristin Sankey and Faith Johannes and redshirt freshman Samantha Weber will be joined by two newcomers. Alyssa Meinzer (Cedar Hills, Utah) and Erika Hanuscin (Las Vegas).

GOALKEEPERS
Wassell is the early favorite to hold onto her starting role between the pipes, as she has started 41 straight games dating back to the first contest of her freshman year. Wassell has excelled in the role as the Rebels’ netminder, posting a total of nine career shutouts, and her 0.95 GAA last year was half a goal better than her freshman total. As an athletic and instinctive goalie, she gives the Rebels a calming presence in the net. Sophomore Kelli McCracken (15 minutes in 2011) also returns for the Rebels and will look to give Wassell a push for the starting role in the preseason camp.
SCHEDULE
Coll was not handed an easy route in his first year leading the Rebels, as UNLV will face four teams that played in the 2011 NCAA Tournament. The season will start on Aug. 17 against Northern Arizona, the earliest start in school history. One positive aspect of the schedule is that 10 of the 18 games will be played at home at Peter Johann Memorial Field. Even more important is that the top three teams from last year’s league standings, New Mexico, San Diego State, and Wyoming, all will make the trip to Las Vegas. “It’s always an advantage to play at home. And our players do love playing on our home field,” said Coll. Our goal is to never let anyone come into our place and push us around, we will defend our home and hope to come out with some strong wins this year.”

2011 YEAR-IN-REVIEW After an impressive first year under head coach Jennifer Klein in 2010, in which UNLV won five of their first six games and finished with an 11-8-1 record, the Rebels entered the 2011 campaign with the unenivable task of having to replace almost 70% of its goal scoring after losing the top three scorers on the squad. Finding the players that would step up on offense led to some struggles over the first half of the season, in which the Rebels posted a 3-7-2 mark in the first 12 games. Things began to turn around however as the underclassmen started to produce on the field, while several veterans, in key roles for the first time in their career, adjusted to their new roles too become leaders on the field in the second half of the season. A win over TCU to start the Mountain West slate was the beginning of the turnaround for the Rebels, who would finish the year with a 5-3-2 record, including a narrow 1-0 loss at New Mexico in the MW semifinals. The season started with an easy 3-0 win over UC Riverside on Aug. 19, with all three goals coming from new starters. However, the Rebels quickly found out that replacing their scorers from a year earlier would not be an easy task, as they were held scoreless for the next four games, and six of their next seven. The one win in that seven-game stretch was a 2-1 victory at Nevada, Reno on Sept. 4 in the second game of the Wolf Pack Invitational, following a 0-0 double-overtime tie with Detroit (Sept. 2) in the first contest of the four-team event. Among the setbacks were road losses at Portland State (Aug. 26) and Oregon (Aug. 28). There wasn’t much concern about the Rebels’ defense in that opening month, as three of the six losses were by 1-0 scores. In fact, only once all season did UNLV allow more than two goals in a game. The offenese started to get back on track with three scores in a 3-0 win over Hawaii (Sept. 18), which snapped a three-game losing streak that included road losses at Pacific (Sept. 9) and UC Davis (Sept. 11). After a setback at Long Beach State on Sept. 23, the Rebels began their turnaround with a much-needed tie decision at Cal State Fullerton, 1-1 on Sept. 25. UNLV then returned home to begin the Mountain West conference slate against TCU on Sept. 30. Showing that they had
recovered from the lumps they had taken over the past month, the Rebels put on a dominating performance (17-5 advantage on shots in the game) that would result in a 2-1 victory in Las Vegas. UNLV would follow that win with a second straight triumph, its first win streak of the season, with a 2-1 overtime victory at home over Loyola Marymount. Freshman Jenna Howerton notched both goals in the game, including the golden goal, to improve the team’s record to 5-7-2, and that feat also earned Howerton Offensive Player of the Week honors from the Mountain West, the first such award of the season for UNLV. The Rebels suffered their first loss of the conference season on the road at eventual regular-season champion New Mexico by a 1-0 score on Oct. 8, but would boucne back with an impressive 5-0 rout of new league member Boise State (Oct. 14). Junior Macy Jo Harrison, the team’s top returning scorer from 2010, had struggled at the start of the year but had a breakout performance against the Broncos, posting two goals and one assist for a career-high five points in the game. That was good enough for MW Offensive Player of the Week honors for Harrison, the first of her career as well. The next weekend, it was the defense’s turn to shine, as the Rebels did not allow a score in 200 minutes of action in a 1-0 win at Air Force (Oct. 21) and a 0-0 overtime tie at Wyoming (Oct. 23). Thanks to the back-to-back shutouts, sophomore goalkeeper Kylie Wassell notched her first Defensive Player of the Week honors for the Rebels. She would finish the season with a total of six shutouts, which ranked her third in the conference. Standing at 3-1-1 in league play, the Rebels went into the

Now in its 14th year, the MW has been assertive in its involvement with the NCAA governance structure and has taken a leadership role in the overall administration of intercollegiate athletics. The Mountain West is noted for its geographic diversity. Some of the most beautiful terrain and landscapes in the nation can be found within Mountain West boundaries, including the majestic Rocky Mountain range, which borders four MW institutions (Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State and New Mexico). The high plains of Wyoming (elevation 7,220 feet – the highest Division I campus in the nation) contrast with the desert cities of Las Vegas and Reno, home to UNLV and Nevada, Reno, while Fresno State and San Diego State add a West coast influence with their locations in California. The inclusion of the Hawai‘i football program extends the Mountain West footprint to the beautiful islands in the Pacific Ocean. ACHIEVEMENTS The MW has produced 762 All-America selections among its 18 sponsored sports in the last 13 years, including a leaguerecord 83 All-America honorees in 2010-11. A total of 125 MW student-athletes have also earned Academic All-America accolades in that span. The Mountain West has sent at least 28 teams to NCAA postseason events in each of the past 13 years, capturing three team national championships in men’s cross country and producing 32 individual national champions in the sports of men’s golf, men’s cross country, and men’s and women’s indoor track & field and outdoor track & field. Mountain West members have participated in 51 bowl games under the league umbrella, including four appearances in BCS games. The MW has earned 61 postseason bids in men’s basketball, including 33 NCAA Tournament appearances and two NIT Final Four berths. MW women’s basketball has tallied 57 postseason slots, including 31 NCAA bids, five Sweet 16 appearances and one Elite Eight berth since 2000. In women’s volleyball, the MW has had 34 NCAA bids with eight Sweet 16 berths and one Elite Eight appearance. Women’s soccer has earned 26 NCAA bids since 1999, with BYU advancing to the Sweet 16 in 2000 and the Elite Eight in 2003.

The MW sent five teams to bowl games for the fifth consecutive year and had two teams ranked in the final BCS Standings for the fourth straight season. For the second time in three years, the Mountain West was represented by four men’s basketball teams in the NCAA tournament. Regular season co-champion New Mexico captured the MW Tournament title to earn the league’s automatic bid, while MW regular-season co-champion San Diego State was joined by Colorado State and UNLV in receiving at-large invitations. San Diego State won both the MW women’s basketball regular-season and tournament titles to earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, marking the Aztecs’ third trip to the Big Dance in the last four seasons. UNLV, making its first postseason appearance since 2006, advanced to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament. Regular-season and tournament champion Colorado State made its 17th consecutive appearance in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament and advanced to the second round for the fifth straight year. In women’s soccer, New Mexico advanced to the NCAA tournament for the second straight year after clinching both the MW regular-season and tournament crowns. In softball, MW champion San Diego State earned the league’s automatic bid and made its fifth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship. In baseball, the MW had regularseason co-champions for the first time in the league’s 13-year history as New Mexico and TCU shared the crown.
COMMISSIONER CRAIG THOMPSON Craig Thompson was the Mountain West Conference’s first employee when he was named Commissioner on Oct. 15, 1998. Ever since, Thompson has navigated the newest NCAA Division I conference through the ever-changing landscape of intercollegiate athletics. As the league enters its 14th season of competition in 2011-12, Thompson continues to create and improve the opportunities for Mountain West institutions and student-athletes to be successful both academically and athletically. Since the MW opened its doors on Jan. 4, 1999, Thompson has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics, while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. Progressive in its approach, the MW has flourished under the guidance of Commissioner Thompson and continues to cultivate opportunities for student-athletes to compete at the highest level, while fostering academic achievement and sportsmanship. Thompson also has positioned the Mountain West for the future with the additions of Fresno State and the University of Nevada, Reno on July 1, 2012, and San Jose State University and Utah State University on July 1, 2013. The University of Hawai`i also joined the league this year (football-only). Prior to his current role, Thompson served as the commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference for nearly eight years and as the only commissioner of the American South Conference before a merger of the two leagues in 1991. Thompson graduated from the University of Minnesota with an undergraduate degree in journalism. He and his wife, Carla, have a son (Ted) and a daughter (Emma).

Against No. 19 BYU in the semifinals and No. 10 Utah on its home field in the championship game, freshman goalkeeper Alicia Lugo went 220 minutes without allowing a goal, and the Rebels would win the penalty kick shootout in both games to claim a second straight tournament title and make another NCAA appearance.

Much of UNLV’s tremendous expansion is the result of support from the Nevada Legislature and the state’s taxpayers. Private donors have played an important role as well. These gifts support new facilities and programs and, most important, provide the scholarship incentives that bring Nevada’s best and brightest student scholars to campus. UNLV operates an on-campus Center for Business and Economic Research, Center for Economic Education, Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies (in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency), Desert Biology Research Center, Center for Survey Research, Nuclear Waste Transportation Research Center and other research and public-service centers. Offering 108 undergraduate programs and 137 graduate tracts, UNLV graduated a class of 5,500 last year. The University operates on a semester system and is a member of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the Council of Graduate Schools, the American Council of Education and the Western College Association. All of the University’s academic programs are fully accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, and many programs have received further accreditation from independent national accreditation bodies.

SMATRESK
Dr. Neal J. Smatresk was appointed President of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on Aug. 6, 2009. His career at UNLV began in 2007 as executive vice president and provost, where he was responsible for the leadership and administration of all academic and research programs, spanning 15 colleges and two professional schools. In the last five years, UNLV has hit a number of milestones and academic achievements despite challenging times. Smatresk emphasizes how vitally important UNLV is to improving educational access and success for diverse students, spurring the research and innovation needed for diversifi cation of Southern Nevada’s economic base, and supplying both an educated work force and critically needed services for the community and region. A testament to his vision is UNLV’s partnership with the highly respected Brookings Institution to establish Brookings Mountain West, the national think tank’s first foray this side of the Mississippi. UNLV completed a recordbreaking $537 million fundraising campaign, with Smatresk and his leadership team garnering a $12.6 million donation from the Engelstad Family Foundation to support the largest active scholarship program in the university’s history. Under Smatresk’s direction, UNLV established the Academic Success Center, which is living up to its name by helping students fi nd the right majors, succeed in their classes, and graduate on time. Student athletes are advised through the center, and they have never done better in the classroom. In addition to his teaching and leadership roles, Smatresk has championed kindergarten to doctorate science outreach eff orts and teacher professional development, participating in a number of programs throughout his career that focus on science, technology, engineering and math career development. UNLV’s president is a scientist by training and received his Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1980. Following postdoctoral work at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Smatresk joined the University of Texas, Arlington (UTA) department of biology in 1982. In his 22 years at UTA, he served as chair of biology and later dean of science, until his appointment as the chief academic offi cer at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2004. During his time there, Hawaii’s fl agship university entered the ranks of the top 25 federally funded institutions, gained three National Academy of Science members, and received recognition from the Chinese Ministry of Education as a Confucius Institute, an honor shared by only 11 other U.S. institutions. Smatresk has received numerous teaching awards, and his research in cardiorespiratory physiology has resulted in more than 50 papers and book chapters and grants from the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health. His undergraduate alma mater, Gettysburg College, awarded him its Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award in 2011.

ATHLETIC TIC DIRECTO DIRECTOR RECTOR RECTO ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
LIVENGOOD
Bringing with him a wealth of experience and the reputation as one of the nation’s top administrators, Jim Livengood was introduced as UNLV’s 11th full-time Director of Athletics on Dec. 17, 2009. He wasted no time getting to work, as less than two weeks later he hired Bobby Hauck as the 10th head coach in Rebel football history. Just three months after that it was announced that a new, state-of-the-art basketball practice facility, the Mendenhall Center, would be built and that stunning addition to the department was dedicated in January 2012. In spring of 2011, Livengood chose Dave Rice to be head coach of the Runnin’ Rebel men’s basketball team and the veteran AD has also overseen the hiring of new coaches in UNLV sports such as baseball, softball and women’s volleyball. This past June, the State Board of Regents approved a new contract for Livengood that will keep him running the department through at least December 2015. Livengood came to UNLV following a successful tenure of more than 15 years at the University of Arizona where he oversaw an athletics program that annually competed for championships not only in the Pac-10 Conference but also at a national level, maintained a high academic
standard for its student-athletes and continually operated its $43 million budget in the black. His fiscal leadership helped Arizona remain one of the lone black-ink athletics programs among a small handful of institutions that rely exclusively on generated funds and do not receive state-appropriated monies. During his time in Tucson, he served as the Pacific-10 Conference president, chair of the Pac-10 Athletic Directors Revenue Sharing Committee and a member of the conference’s Bowl Committee and Basketball Tournament Subcommittee. He also was a member of the Rose Bowl Management Committee, the NCAA Fellows program, NACDA President, and chair of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee, on which he served five years. His work at Arizona and its ascension on the national level earned him an Athletic Director of the Year Award from the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics in 2006 for Division I-A. Livengood initiated Campaign Arizona, which raised more than $130 million for athletic facility improvements and endowments while the Wildcats maintained a top-25 competitive record in the NACDA Directors’ Cup (formerly Sears Cup), including high rankings of sixth in 1993-94, fourth in 1994-95, seventh in 1995-96, sixth in both 1996-97 and 1997-98 and ninth in 2001-02. That record reflects success throughout Arizona’s broad-based program, highlighted by participation in the 1994 and 2001 NCAA Men’s Final Four and champions of the 1997 NCAA Men’s National Basketball Tournament. Arizona also won the 1994, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2006 and 2007 NCAA Women’s Softball College World Series titles, the 1996 and 2000 NCAA Women’s Golf title and the 2008 men’s and women’s NCAA Swimming Championships. Livengood is a member of the NCAA Fellows Program to mentor new athletic directors, has served as a member of the NCAA Peer Review Team from 1994-99, the NCAA Gender Equity Task Force, and the Women’s Committee on Athletics. He has been a member of the NACDA Preseason Football Games Committee since

2000 and was a member of the NACDA Strategic Planning Committee from 1999-2001. He served as NACDA president in 1998, and in 1999 was named Division I-A Athletic Director of the Year. He is also a member of the Division I-A Athletic Directors Association, having served as president of that association in 1998. Livengood spent six years as the Athletics Director at Washington State University from 1988-93 where he developed what is still widely regarded as a model gender equity program. In addition he laid the groundwork for a studentathlete wellness center that is regarded as one of the finest in the nation. Livengood began his administrative career in 1980 as the Associate Director for Development and Public Relations at Washington State before becoming the Athletics Director at Southern Illinois, a position he held until returning to Washington State. Born March 28, 1945, in Walla Walla, Wash., he received his bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University in 1968 and completed his fifth-year education requirement for teaching certification at Central Washington University in 1972. He taught and served as an assistant football coach and track coach at Moses Lake High School in Washington in 1968-69, and as head football and basketball coach and counselor at Ephrata High School in Washington from 197280 before moving into athletics administration. Jim and his wife, Linda, have two grown children, Michelle, a lawyer in Flagstaff, and Jeremy, who resides in Phoenix. Both children are University of Arizona graduates. Michelle earned her law degree in May 2000 and Jeremy graduated in December1999. The Livengoods are the proud grandparents of four: new grandson Dylan and twins Emma and Isabella (3), born to Michelle and her husband, Jack Murphy, who is the men’s basketball head coach at NAU; and another recent addition, grandson James, born to Jeremy and his wife, Megan, in 2011.

STADIUM
HALL F FAM FAMEE HALL OF OF FAME Class of 2012
EIGHT INDIVIDUALS, ONE TEAM ELECTED TO UNLV HALL OF FAME
Albrecht
Diaconescu
Frohlich
Miller
Seven different Rebel sports will be represented during ceremonies this fall as the UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2012 will be honored Oct. 12. Six former Rebel standout players, one head coach and a distinguished contributor will join one team in being inducted the night before the Battle for the Fremont Cannon football game between UNLV and Nevada, Reno. Born in 1987, UNLV’s Athletics Hall of Fame will now grow to 114 members strong. Under the hall’s bylaws, former student-athletes must have completed their eligibility at least 10 years earlier to be selected. Coaches and administrators must have stopped working at the University five years previous. All classes now enter on a biennial basis. The winningest coach in UNLV tennis history, FRED ALBRECHT led the Rebel netters from 1974-83 and compiled a record of 230-80 for a winning percentage of .742. A longtime administrator on campus, Albrecht was called upon to serve as Interim Athletics Director in both 1995 and 2003 during searches for permanent replacements. He retired from UNLV in 2007 after 38 years with a final title of vice president for university and community relations. LORENA DIACONESCU is arguably the Rebels women’s swimming program’s most decorated athlete. She won three consecutive Conference Swimmer of the Year awards from 2000-02 while setting school records in six separate events. Diaconescu earned All-America in 2000 and was honorable mention one year later. Winner of eight MW individual crowns as well as seven relay titles, she was also a two-time Olympian for her home country of Romania. The highest-scoring basketball player in UNLV history – men’s or women’s – LINDA FROHLICH finished with 2,355 points and a 21.2 PPG average in her dominating hoops career. The native of Oldendorf, Germany, was named USBWA National Freshman of the Year in 1999, AP Honorable Mention All-America as a sophomore and junior and then Third Team as a senior. Those seasons also saw Frohlich win Mountain West Player of the Year honors three straight years from 2000-02 before going on to a pro career in the WNBA and overseas. Entering the Hall of Fame as a Distinguished Contributor is noted Las Vegas artist and illustrator MIKE MILLER. During the 1980s, Miller created and named the cartoon man with the long moustache known as “Hey Reb.” Miller was paid a single dollar for his work, which eventually helped UNLV vault to the top spot in college apparel licensing. Still the leading Runnin’ Rebel scorer in history, EDDIE OWENS was the emerging program’s second AllAmerican in men’s basketball when he was tabbed First Team by a pair of outlets as a junior in 1976. A magical se-
nior season saw him star as part of the so-called “Hardway Eight” team that gained fame by setting NCAA records for most points in a season, most 100-point games and most consecutive 100-point games en route to the school’s first Final Four appearance. JACINT SMION turned in a career in the water that rivaled any in school history. The Mountain West Swimmer of the Year three consecutive seasons earned All-America honors at the 2000 NCAA Championships while also being honorable mention in two relays. His fourth All-America finish came in 2002. Simon won 10 conference championships as an individual and one on a relay team and swam for his home nation of Hungary in the 2000 Summer Olympics. AMIE STEWART was a dominant pitcher for dominant softball program in the mid-1990s. A second team All-America selection as a senior in 1995, her 30-9 mark is still the school record for wins a season. She led her team all the way to the Women’s College World Series and tossed two complete games while finishing with a .95 ERA en route to becoming the only Rebel to be named to a WCWS All-Tournament Team. Arguably the top cornerback in school history, KEVIN THOMAS still holds numerous school and conference defensive records. The first player in school history to start 46 games, Thomas was the first defensive player from UNLV to earn All-America status in 26 years when he was named Third Team by Football News and Fourth Team by Sporting News. After helping his team win the Las Vegas Bowl as a junior, he became the program’s second three-time first team all-conference honoree and he was named the MW Defensive Player of the Year in 2001. The 1984 UNLV FOOTBALL TEAM was the first of two in school history to win a conference championship and its 11-2 overall record included a victory over Toledo in the California Bowl. Going undefeated in the PCAA, the talent-rich squad featured the conference Offensive Player of the Year in All-America punter/quarterback Randall Cunningham; the Defensive Player of the Year in lineman Aaron Moog; and the Coach of the Year in Harvey Hyde. Also being honored at the ceremony is the 2012 winner of the Silver Rebel Award -- former UNLV quarterback and longtime ESPN personality KENNY MAYNE.
