ON THE COVER

The 2013-14 season marks the 13th for UNLV Women's Golf. The program has had a history, be it young, of being successful. This year's squad brings a lot of tournament experience that blends well with a vigorous coaching staff. The team strives for perfection but likes to have fun, both of which is prevalent in the cover of this year's media guide. Pictured from left to right is Assistant Coach Erin Andrews, freshman Avery French, junior Marguerite Swearingen, freshman Kiley Ballew, junior Dana Finkelstein, junior Mayko Chwen Wang, freshman Vivian Chen, senior Demi Mak, senior Katerina Prorokova, and Head Coach Amy Bush-Herzer. Athletic Training Providing the best possible preventive and rehabilitative care, the UNLV women's golf athletic training staff is headed by Director

of Athletic Training Kyle Wilson. Made possible by a generous gift of $1.5 million by Marilyn and Si Redd, the athletic training facility incorporates the total scope of sports medicine over an 8,500-square-foot area. Aside from five staff offices, a rehabilitation room houses a dozen pieces of equipment including Cybex stationary bicycles, stair machines and treadmills, all under a natural skylight. The largest area features a dozen tables to offer student-athletes various treatments throughout the day. Taping, padding and bracing all take place in another all-inclusive room. Finally, an aquatic therapy room features three above-ground whirlpools surrounding a 10-feet deep pool for rehabilitative exercises. Kyle Wilson All of these features make it possible for UNLV student-athletes to rehabilitate injuries without ever needing to leave the Lied Director of Athletic Complex. Athletic Training Other amenities include a physician's office and exam room to provide daily medical service for student-athletes. A drug-testing facility also is part of the new complex. This expedites medical care because the student-athletes health care is self-contained. Also, UNLV's academic program and its student athletic trainers benefit from a sports medicine library, study room and conference facility. "Aside from being four times larger than our former facility," says Kyle Wilson, UNLV's Director of Athletic Training. "This is one of the top complexes in the nation because of the versatility it offers to service student-athletes in every area of sports medicine. We're now more efficient, more accessible and more effective in preventing and rehabilitating athletic injuries."

Mountain West Champs 2004, 2005, 2006, 2013 11 Straight NCAA Regional Appearances

Season 2013-14 Outlook Winning a championship is hard, but repeating as conference champions is even more difficult. That will be the task at hand for the UNLV women’s golf in the 2013-14 season. The Rebels return all five players that helped the team win the Mountain West championship, which was the fourth in school history. The return of all of that experience is rare amongst in college athletics, let alone golf. “Our experience is a very important component coming into the season,” head coach Amy Bush-Herzer said. “Everyone came together at the end of last season and they are pushing each other to get better and that is huge for our team.” The heart of the lineup is three juniors: Dana Finkelstein, Marguerite Swearingen and Mayko Chwen Wang. They all have played over 50 rounds of golf in just two years of competition. Their experience will help the Rebels grow from a young squad into a veteran team. “As a unit, it is really cool to see how Dana, Marguerite and Mayko get along,” Bush-Herzer said. “They are genuinely friends on and off the course. To have that as a solid group moving through school together is a really neat thing to see as a coach. They also can share a lot with our new kids coming in because they have played a lot of rounds and have a ton of experience.” The two other returners are seniors that have helped the team tremendously. Demi Mak finished runner-up at the Mountain West Championship during her first year as a Rebel and Katerina Prorokova has played in 80 rounds during her UNLV career which ranks 10th, in program history.

“We want both of our seniors to leave their mark on our program in a great way,” Bush-Herzer said. “They both have a lot of experience and can help lead our team.” The Rebels also bring in three newcomers. Freshmen Vivian Chen, Avery French and Kiley Ballew join the team with great potential. Chen and French have played well in big events and bring that experience to UNLV. Ballew hails from the Las Vegas Valley and had an outstanding prep career at Arbor View High School.

THE SCHEDULE

The UNLV women’s golf team schedule will challenge them this season as they will play in many of the sport's high-profile tournaments. The Rebels open with two tournaments held by Mountain West schools. The first is the Colonel Bill Wollenberg’s Ptarmigan Ram Classic in Fort Collins, Colorado. This is the third consecutive season UNLV opens its season at the Ram Classic and last year the team finished third. Next on the schedule will be a trip to Albuquerque, N.M., for the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational. Last fall, the Rebels led the tournament after the first day, but finished tied

for second. UNLV will then travel to the Lone Star State to play in the Betsy Rawls Invitational hosted by Texas. This is the second consecutive year the Rebels will play in the tournament and they will look to improve on a 10th-place finish from last October. Wrapping up the Fall season will be the Rebels' only home tournament of the 2013-14 year as they will host the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown. This will be the second consecutive year that the tournament will be played at the Stallion Mountain Golf Club. The Spring season will open with a trip to Stanford, Calif., for the Peg Barnhard Invitational. The tournament will be played at the Stanford Golf Club, where the Rebels competed in the NCAA Regional last spring. UNLV will then play three tournaments in March (Bruin Wave Invitational (Woodland Hills, Calif.), Clover Cup (Mesa, Ariz.) and The Farms Invite (San Diego, Calif.) and one tournament in April (Silverado Tournament (Napa, Calif.) before traveling back to Rancho Mirage, Calif., for the Mountain West Championship. “Our goal is to be back-to-back Mountain West champions,” Bush-Herzer said. “But to do that, we need to start winning tournaments during the regular season. After winning it all last year, our girls know they have the ability to win tournaments, which is good, and that needs to carry over into this season.” The NCAA Regional sites are in Tallahassee, Fla., Stillwater, Okla., and Seattle, Wash. And the NCAA Championship will take place in Tulsa, Okla. on May 21-24, 2014.

Head Coach

Amy Bush-Herzer Head Coach 4th year Amy Bush-Herzer enters her fourth season as head coach of the UNLV women's golf program after having a remarkable 2012-13 season that earned her Mountain West Coach of the Year honors. It was the third time a UNLV women's golf head coach was honored as former coach Missy Ringler won the award twice (2003-04 and 2005-06). The 2012-13 season was highlighted by the Rebels' fourth Mountain West Championship. With the title, UNLV earned a spot at an NCAA Regional for the 11th straight year. At the NCAA West Regional in Stanford, Calif., the Rebels finished tied for 15th. As a team the Rebels recorded nine top-10 finishes on the season and finished the year as the 41st ranked team by Golf Stat. Under Bush-Herzer's guidance, rising junior Dana Finkelstein became UNLV's fifth Mountain West Player of the Year. She led the MW in average with 74.28 strokes per round and was named to the All-Region Team for the West Region after placing 10th. In 2012, Finkelstein and Mayko Chwen Wang became the fourth and fifth UNLV golfers to be named Mountain West Freshmen of the Year. One year earlier, Therese Koelbaek became the fourth women's golfer to earn MW Player of the Year honors. The Denmark native dominated all season, racking up 10 top-10 finishes in 11 events, including winning the MW Championship Tournament by a record-tying seven-stroke margin. Koelbaek became the first golfer in program history to earn All-MW honors four straight years and collected a slew of postseason accolades, including the 2011 Mountain West Female Scholar Athlete of the Year and a CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America First Team selection. During the 2011-12 season, Bush-Herzer helped guide the Rebels to their 10th straight NCAA Regional, posting nine top-10 finishes in 11 events. UNLV posted top-five finishes at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown (5th), UNLV Spring Invitational (2nd), Bruin/Wave Invitational (4th) and at the Mountain West Championship Tournament, finishing runner-up to TCU. The 2010-11 squad also earned the program's first top-25 finish in the nation in team GPA, tying for 24th on the National Golf Coaches Association's top 25 listing. UNLV was the highest nationally ranked team to appear on the list. Before taking over, Bush-Herzer had spent the previous three years as the top assistant to former head

coach Missy Ringler. During that time the Rebels made three consecutive appearances in NCAA Regional competition and one trip to the NCAA Championships, where they turned in a program-best finish of 16th overall in 2008. Since 2007, the program has posted 25 top-10 finishes in regular-season tournament play. Prior to joining Ringler's staff, Bush-Herzer was the Chapter Coordinator for the Southwest Section PGA, where she was responsible for the overall operations for Las Vegas from 2005 to 2007. She was the tournament director for numerous events, including the PGA Junior Series, Arizona Open and the Southwest Section Championship. She earned the 2006 Las Vegas Chapter Golf Professional of the Year while working at the Southwest Section PGA. Bush-Herzer served as the assistant golf professional from 2001-05 at SouthShore Golf Club at Lake Las Vegas Resort, working on the day-to-day operations at the course. She also served as an assistant golf professional for the TPC at Summerlin where she assisted with a PGA Tour event and a Champions Tour event. Bush-Herzer graduated from New Mexico State in 2000 with a bachelor's degree in business administration with a specialization in professional golf management from a program that is sanctioned by the PGA. In 2007, Bush completed her master's degree in sports and leisure management from UNLV. Bush graduated from the NCAA Women's Coaches Academy in Denver, Colo., in 2008. In 2010, she also attended the NCAA Women's Coaches Academy Dimension 2, which was held in Boston, Mass. Bush-Herzer has more than 12 years of experience as a golf professional and is a Class A member of the PGA of America. In addition to coaching, Bush is active with the PGA, serving as the President for the Southern Nevada Section PGA (the first woman to be elected to that post) and also a board member for the Southwest Section PGA. She has also presented at the PGA Fall Expo Main Stage and serving on the boards of The First Tee and Southern Nevada Golf Association. In 2009, Bush-Herzer was again honored by the PGA and was named the 2009 Bill Strausbaugh Award winner for community service. In 2011, Bush attended the NACWAA Institute in Denver, Colorado. Bush-Herzer was married to Kendall Herzer on August 7, 2010. The couple resides in Las Vegas.

Assistant Coach

Erin Andrews Assistant Coach 3rd Year

Erin Andrews was hired as assistant coach for the UNLV women's golf team during the summer of 2011. Andrews, a Las Vegas native and graduate of Durango High School, lettered four times for the University of Oregon Ducks and was a 2004 All-Pac-10 Conference honoree. "Erin's experience within various sports programs has been a great asset to the women's golf team here at UNLV," BushHerzer said. "She understands the hard work that goes into building a successful team and has brought a wealth of knowledge in her time here." Andrews led Durango HS to two state titles before accepting a full scholarship to Oregon in 2003. She opened her sopho-

more season with the Ducks winning the Lady Vandal Fall Invitational, becoming UO's first medalist winner in two seasons in the process. She tied for the team lead in scoring average that season en route to allconference honors. She capped her career with a 15th-place finish at the 2006 Pac-10 Championship, the highest Duck finisher in the tournament. Andrews still sits among the top 10 in the record books at UO, standing tied for seventh for career rounds played (109) and for rounds counted, factoring in the top five in 87.2 percent of rounds played. Last fall she joined Bush in helping lead a clinic for the promotion of women's golf at the annual Justin Timberlake Shriner's Hospital for Children Open.

2012-13 In Review The 2012-13 season wrapped up with UNLV winning its fourth Mountain West championship in program history and first since 2006. Along with winning the MW Championship, Dana Finkelstein became the fifth Rebel to win the MW Player of the Year and Amy Bush-Herzer became the second coach to earn MW Coach of the Year Honors. “Dana had a fantastic year,” Bush-Herzer said. “She was named to the all-region team and was the Mountain West Player of the Year. She had a lot of accolades that were well deserved. She puts in a lot of hard work in the gym and on the golf course to make sure she can continue to be on top.” “To be recognized by peers is so amazing,” Bush-Herzer said about her own honor. “I truly love what I do and I get to work with great people and I get to have a wonderful team. It adds to the fact of how much I love my job. I don’t need awards for that, but it is truly an honor to get recognized for all the hard work you put in.”

Fall 2012

The second consecutive runner-up MW finish and the 10th straight regional appearance laid the groundwork for the fall of 2012. The Rebels met their fall expectations with three top-three finishes and five top-10 finishes in five tournaments. The Rebels opened the season with a third-place finish at the Colonel Bill Wollenberg's Ptarmigan Ram Classic in Fort Collins, Colo., with a score of 891 (298296-297). Sophomore Mayko Chwen Wang paced the Rebels en route to a tie for 10th with a score of 220 (72-75-73) The second tournament of the season saw the Rebels have an overnight lead going into the final round, but finished second one stroke behind Iowa State with a score of 887 (293-295-299). Sophomore Dana Finkelstein and junior Charlotte Brooks tied for 13th as the top Rebel finishers with scores of 221 (76-72-73, 73-72-76, respectively). UNLV turned in a sixth-place finish in

the third tournament of the fall at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in Seattle, Wash., with a score of 927 (308-301-318). Finkelstein placed tied for 13th, which was the team's top finisher, with a score of 227 (78-71-78). Finkelstein led the Rebels for a third consecutive week at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown at Stallion Mountain Golf Club, turning in her first top-five finish of the season with a score of 220 (73-75-72), finishing fifth. As a team, the Rebels finished third with a score of 898 (302-305-291). Junior transfer Demi Mak paced the team at the final tournament in Austin, Texas, finishing tied for 15th with a score of 219 (73-73-73). Mak joined the Rebels after spending two successful seasons at New Mexico State. "Demi brings a lot of leadership capabilities and tournament experience," Amy Bush-Herzer said. "She has been a great addition and has a great personality and fits in well with this team." The Rebels closed the autumn slate by finishing 10th at the Betsy Rawls Invitational with a score of 898 (298-298-302). "The fall was great for us, we came right out of the chute strong. As a coaching staff we thought we would have a good fall," Bush-Herzer said. "I think we definitely capitalized on that. Finishing third and then having an overnight lead at New Mexico was a huge confidence builder for the team. Now our players know that we can do it and what our potential is, and that is what needed to happen. To have these studentathletes come in and play five events in fall and still do well with grades and maintaining a life, there is a lot to be said about them."

Spring 2013

The first tournament of the spring set the tone for the rest of the Rebels season. As a team, the Rebels finished fifth at the Cal Invite in Pleasanton, Calif. Finkelstein recorded her best collegiate finish to date, as she tied for second place, five shots off the lead. The tournament was only two rounds and the Arizona native turned in a score of even-par 144 (74-70).

UNLV turned in its seventh straight top10 finish at the Bruin/Wave Invitational with a 10th place tie. Finkelstein paced the Rebels as she tied for 29th after turning in a score of 17-over 232 (77-81-77). UNLV secured its second top-five finish of the spring in its third tournament at The Farms Invite in San Diego, Calif. Finkelstein again paced UNLV, as she tied for eighth with a score of 7-over 223 (76-7374). The PING/ASU Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. marked the end of the Rebels' eight straight top-10 finishes as the team finished 15th. Finkelstein was the top performer for UNLV and was the only golfer to finish in the top-50. She tied for 38th after turning in a score of 4-over 220 (75-74-71). The Rebels bounced back in their next tournament, which was the Mountain West Championship held in Rancho Mirage, Calif. UNLV took home the team title, while Mak led the Rebels. She tied for first after turning in a score of 7-over 223 (77-73-73), but lost the individual championship in a one-hole playoff to Manon DeRoey of New Mexico. Chwen Wang also helped the Rebel effort with her first career top-five finish. She tied for fourth with a score of 9-over 225 (80-69-76). The championship finish gave UNLV an automatic bid into the NCAA Postseason. The Rebels were the No. 15 seed in the NCAA West Regionals, which was played at the Stanford Golf Course. As a team the Rebels failed to qualify for the national tournament after finishing tied for 15th. Finkelstein posted her fifth top-10 finish of the season as she tied for 10th with a score of 3-over 216 (75-71-70). Her finish earned her all-region honors. "We had a great end to the season with a Mountain West Championship, the MW Player of the Year and having four players named to a MW team," Bush-Herzer said. "It was just a great way to end my third year as head coach. We really came together as a team at the end, and that was a lot of fun to watch. We left a little bit there at regionals, but with returning everyone we are excited about the 2013-14 season."

UNLV All-Americans

Sunny Oh

The first All-American in the program's history, Sunny Oh set the standard for UNLV women's golf in her two years as a Rebel. A two-time All-America selection, Oh earned her first nod in 2003 as a NGCA honorable mention as a freshman. She followed that by being named to the NGCA second team as a sophomore, as she won medalist honors at the MW Tournament on her way to being named conference Player of the Year.

Da Sol Chung Da Sol Chun became the second UNLV All-America selection after putting together the best season in the program's history in 2005-06. Chung won MW Player of the Year honors and league medalist honors in 2006. She followed that with a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships, the highest finish ever by a MW golfer. Chung garnered NGCA first-team honors, the first such honor for a Rebel golfer.

Therese Koelbaek

Therese Koelbaek is the only player in UNLV women's golf history to earn All-America honors three times. She was named to Golfweek's third team following a standout senior season after earning honorable mention honors in 2008 and 2009. Koelbaek finished her career as the 2011 Mountain West Golfer of the Year and won medalist honors at the 2011 MW Championship Tournament.

With its Performing Arts Center, the campus is the cultural hub of Southern Nevada. World-class orchestras and soloists, dance and theater arts combine to provide a broad selection of concerts and stage productions. The Barrick Lecture Series and several campus organizations bring noted speakers to the University, and local and visiting artists show their works in the Donna Beam Fine Art Gallery. UNLV has excellent athletic facilities as well, many open for student and public use. Opened in 1957 as the southern regional division of the University of Nevada with a total of 28 students, UNLV now is home to more than 27,000 students coming from every county in Nevada, all 50 U.S. states and 88 countries. Much of UNLV’s tremendous expansion is the result of support from the Nevada Legislature and the state’s taxpayers. Private donors have played an important role as well. These gifts support new facilities and programs and, most important, provide the scholarship incentives that bring Nevada’s best and brightest student scholars to campus. UNLV operates an on-campus Center for Business and Economic Research, Center for Economic Education, Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies (in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency), Desert Biology Research Center, Center for Survey Research, Nuclear Waste Transportation Research Center and other research and public-service centers. Offering 103 undergraduate programs and 123 graduate tracts, UNLV graduated a class of 5,500 last year. The University operates on a semester system and is a member of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the Council of Graduate Schools, the American Council of Education and the Western College Association. All of the University’s academic programs are fully accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, and many programs have received further accreditation from independent national accreditation bodies.

SMATRESK

Dr. Neal J. Smatresk was appointed president of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on Aug. 6, 2009. Today, he leads a campus that is committed to serving Nevada by creating an educated workforce and forging community and business partnerships to move our state economy forward. Under his leadership, the central role UNLV plays in creating a prosperous future by providing an affordable, superior education and nationally recognized scholarship has been a consistent theme. Smatresk emphasizes UNLV’s role as a first-choice, Tier 1 institution dedicated to educational access and success for diverse students. Under Smatresk’s direction, UNLV established the Academic Success Center, which is living up to its name by helping students identify the right majors, succeed in their classes, and graduate on time. Student athletes are advised through the center, and are excelling academically. UNLV is a collaborative university that crosses internal and external boundaries. A testament to Smatresk’s vision is a new Collaborative Research and Education initiative an UNLV’s partnership with the highly respected Brookings Institution to establish Brookings Mountain West, the national think tank’s first foray this side of the Mississippi. Through a recently formed UNLV Campus Improvement Authority, Smatresk is working with the community through a public-private partnership to create a world-class stadium that will enhance campus life and bring new major entertainment opportunities to Las Vegas. Through these and other community partnerships, and a commitment to respond to the state’s workforce demands, UNLV is driving research and innovation needed to diversify the region’s economic base and provide critically needed services for a dynamic region. Smatresk is a scientist by training and received his Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1980. Following post-doctoral work at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Smatresk joined the University of Texas, Arlington (UTA) department of biology in 1982. In his 22 years at UTA, he served as chair of biology and dean of science, until his appointment as the chief academic officer at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2004. During his time there, Hawaii’s flagship university entered the ranks of the top 25 federally funded institutions, gained three National Academy of Science members, and received recognition from the Chinese Ministry of Education as a Confucius Institute. His career at UNLV began in 2007 as executive vice president and provost, where he was responsible for the leadership and administration of all academic and research programs, spanning 15 colleges and two professional schools. President Smatresk has received numerous teaching awards, and his research in cardio respiratory physiology has resulted in more than 50 papers and book chapters and grants from the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health. His undergraduate alma mater, Gettysburg College, awarded him its Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award in 2011.

KUNZER-MURPHY

Born and raised in Las Vegas, Tina Kunzer-Murphy has been a fixture in the Southern Nevada sports community for more than four decades. On July 1, 2013, she added another accomplishment to her long and varied career as she began serving as UNLV Interim Director of Athletics. The move, announced by UNLV President Neal Smatresk on May 20, marked two major milestones as KunzerMurphy became both the first woman and the first alum of the school to oversee the department. In October of 2013, her contract was extended through December of 2014. “Tina Kunzer-Murphy has agreed to step into the role of interim athletic director on the heels of Jim Livengood’s retirement,” Smatresk said. “Tina brings a wealth of experience to UNLV and I am truly grateful that she will be serving in this critical role.” A graduate of Valley High School, Kunzer-Murphy first attended Southern Utah, where she lettered in swimming, before transferring to UNLV to compete in both tennis and volleyball at her hometown university. She earned her bachelor’s degree in physical education from the school in 1975. While pursuing a graduate degree she served as a tennis instructor and dance teacher at both UNLV and Clark County Community College (now CSN). Soon after earning her master’s in education in 1977, she was hired as head coach of the UNLV women’s tennis team as well as director of its cheerleading program. When the school dropped tennis for financial reasons in the early 1980s, she was thrust into a management role under thenathletics director Brad Rothermel, and eventually worked with the football and basketball programs, among others, during the department’s wildly successful run through the PCAA/Big West

Conference. Named UNLV’s Senior Women’s Administrator in 1981, Kunzer-Murphy oversaw the entire Lady Rebel athletic program, as well as various support groups such as the Rebel Football Foundation, the Rebel Golf Foundation and the Women’s Sports Foundation, which she helped create. In 1983, she was named an assistant athletics director and in 1987 was promoted to senior assistant AD. Kunzer-Murphy became senior associate AD at the University of Pacific in 1992 but then soon returned to town to work for the Las Vegas 51s and Thunder professional sports franchises as director of corporate sales and marketing. After UNLV moved to the Western Athletic Conference in 1996, Kunzer-Murphy was hired by the WAC to run its annual football championship game and men’s and women’s basketball championship events in Las Vegas. Kunzer-Murphy returned to campus in 1999 when she was selected by ESPN Regional Television (ERT) to run the newly formed ESPN Regional at UNLV office, which oversaw the athletic department’s corporate sales and broadcasting departments until 2005. From 2000-12, Kunzer-Murphy served as Executive Director of the Las Vegas Bowl, which ERT purchased. Under her leadership, the bowl game enjoyed six consecutive sellouts from 2006-11, record-high TV ratings and team payouts en route to elevating itself into the national college football landscape A 2007 inductee of the Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame, Kunzer-Murphy in 2010 became the first woman to serve as Chairman of the Football Bowl Association. In summer 2011 she was hon-

Kunzer-Murphy returned to work for her alma mater in January of 2013 when she was named Director of Sponsorships and Development for the UNLV Alumni Association. She has one son, Stephen, and has been married to former UNLV coach and local high school teacher and coach Greg Murphy since 1990.

An excellent place to play or watch tennis is right here at UNLV ... A well-run facility, with 12 courts and a great stadium setup. > Tennis legend Billie Jean King in USA TODAY, 2005

Without a doubt we have the privilege of playing in one of the nicest ballparks in the west.

HALL OF FAME HALL HALL OF OF FAME FAME HALL OF FAME

Class of 2012

Seven different Rebel sports were represented during ceremonies as the UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2012 was honored Oct. 12, 2012. Six former Rebel standout players, one head coach and a distinguished contributor joined one team in being inducted the night before the Battle for the Fremont Cannon football game between UNLV and Nevada, Reno. Also being honored that night was former Rebel football player and current TV personality, Kenny Mayne, who received the Silver Rebel Award Born in 1987, UNLV’s Athletics Hall of Fame has now grown to 114 members strong. Under the hall’s bylaws, former student-athletes must have completed their eligibility at least 10 years earlier to be selected. Coaches and administrators must have stopped working at the University five years previous. All classes now enter on a biennial basis.

FRED ALBRECHT (1974-83, 1995, 2003) The winningest coach in UNLV tennis history, led the Rebel netters and compiled a record of 230-80 for a winning percentage of .742. A longtime administrator on campus, Albrecht was called upon to serve as Interim Athletics Director in both 1995 and 2003 during searches for permanent replacements. He retired from UNLV in 2007 after 38 years with a final title of vice president for university and community relations. LORENA DIACONESCU (1998-02) is arguably the Rebels women’s swimming program’s most decorated athlete. She won three consecutive Conference Swimmer of the Year awards from 2000-02 while setting school records in six separate events. Diaconescu earned All-America in 2000 and was honorable mention one year later. Winner of eight MW individual crowns as well as seven relay titles, she was also a two-time Olympian for her home country of Romania. LINDA FROHLICH (1998-02) The highest-scoring basketball player in UNLV history – men’s or women’s – finished with 2,355 points and a 21.2 PPG average in her dominating hoops career. The native of Oldendorf, Germany, was named USBWA National Freshman of the Year in 1999, AP Honorable Mention All-America as a sophomore and junior and then Third Team as a senior. EDDIE OWENS (1973-77) Still the leading Runnin’ Rebel scorer in history, was the emerging program’s second All-American in men’s basketball when he was tabbed First Team by a pair of outlets as a junior in 1976. JACINT SIMON (1998-2002) turned in a career in the water that rivaled any in school history. The Mountain West Swimmer of the Year three consecutive seasons earned All-America honors at the 2000 NCAA Championships while also being honorable mention in two relays. His fourth All-America finish came in 2002. Simon won 10 conference championships as an individual and one on a relay team and swam for his home nation of Hungary in the 2000 Summer Olympics. AMIE STEWART (1992-95) was a dominant pitcher for dominant softball program in the mid-1990s. A second team All-America selection as a senior in 1995, her 30-9 mark is still the school record for wins a season. She led her team all the way to the Women’s College World Series and tossed two complete games while finishing with a .95 ERA en route to becoming the only Rebel to be named to a WCWS All-Tournament Team. KEVIN THOMAS (1998-01) Arguably the top cornerback in school history, still holds numerous school and conference defensive records. The first player in school history to start 46 games, Thomas was the first defensive player from UNLV to earn All-America status in 26 years when he was named Third Team by Football News and Fourth Team by Sporting News. The 1984 UNLV FOOTBALL TEAM was the first of two in school history to win a conference championship and its 11-2 overall record included a victory over Toledo in the California Bowl. Going undefeated in the PCAA, the talent-rich squad featured the conference Offensive Player of the Year in All-America punter/quarterback Randall Cunningham; the Defensive Player of the Year in lineman Aaron Moog; and the Coach of the Year in Harvey Hyde. DISTINGUISHED CONTRIBUTOR MIKE MILLER is noted Las Vegas artist and illustrator. During the 1980s, Miller created and named the cartoon man with the long moustache known as “Hey Reb.” Miller was paid a single dollar for his work, which eventually helped UNLV vault to the top spot in college apparel licensing.
