FACILITIES
PETER JOHANN MEMORIAL FIELD The dedication of Peter Johann Memorial Soccer Field during the 1983 season marked a special occasion for all those who were involved with the building of UNLV’s first on-campus soccer facility. Despite the fact that UNLV soccer has been around since 1974, Rebel teams in the past never truly had a “home field” to call their own. And, when former men’s soccer head coach Barry Barto assumed his position prior to the 1982 season, building an on-campus soccer field became a priority. Barto approached then-athletics director Brad Rothermel to work out a solution to the problem and the two settled on the current location, where the old softball field had previously existed. Once the site was finalized, a huge community effort was instrumental in the building of the soccer field. The field is named after the late son of Kenneth F. Johann, a real estate businessman who has lived in Las Vegas for more than 50 years. Johann has been a strong
supporter of Rebel soccer and he and his wife, Alice, set up a scholarship fund in memory of their son. Thus, Johann was more than happy to be a part of the overall community effort. Johann Field played host to the 1983 ISAA Senior Bowl All-Star Game where the West team posted a 4-0 victory. Numerous international matches have also been played on its pitch and it is also the site of the annual UNLV/Nike Soccer Classic for both the men’s and women’s squads. The facility has also played host to three Las Vegas Soccer Spectaculars. The inaugural contest in 2002 featured the WUSA’s San Jose CyberRays and the San Diego Spirit, while in the spring of 2003, the Boston Breakers took on San Jose. The final spectacular was in March of 2003, between UNLV and the Mexican Olympic Team, who had just claimed a spot in the 2004 Athens Games. In the spring of 2007, a sellout crowd watched the first-ever MLS contest on the UNLV
PETER JOHANN MEMORIAL FIELD campus, as Real Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids played to a 0-0 draw in an exhibition contest on March 31. In 2004, the UNLV men’s soccer team posted its 125th victory at the site, achieving the milestone in the second to last game of the year. The Rebels eclipsed the century mark in 174 games over 16 years. With the addition of endzone seats in 1997, the grandstands now offer seating for approximately 2,500 spectators in an open seating arrangement, and the facility boasts natural grass, a press box, and lights The Rebel Alumni Park, dedicated in 2002, was made possible for night matches. The facility was by the efforts of alumni and friends of the Rebel soccer program. most recently upgraded during the summer of 2006, as a $300,000 renovation led to a new irrigation system as well as new sod and grass for the field. Generally regarded as one of the top college soccer facilities in the West, Johann Field celebrates its 31st season in 2012.

ATHLETIC TRAINING Providing the best possible preventative and rehabilitative care, the UNLV soccer athletic training staff is headed by Director of Athletic Training Kyle Wilson. The trainer for this year’s team is Bernie Chavies. Made possible by a generous gift of $1.5 million by Marilyn and Si Redd, the Lied Athletic complex’s athletic training facility incorporates the total scope of sports medicine over an 8,500-square-foot area. Aside from five staff offices, a rehabilitation room houses a dozen pieces of equipment including Cybex stationary bicycles, stair machines and treadmills, all under a natural skylight. The largest area features a dozen tables to offer student-athletes various treatments throughout the day. Taping, padding and bracing all take place in another all-inclusive room. Finally, an aquatic therapy room features three above-ground whirlpools surrounding a 10-feet deep pool for rehabilitative exercises. Bernie Chavies All of these features make it possible for UNLV Athletic Trainer student-athletes to rehabilitate injuries without ever needing to leave the confines of the Lied Athletic Complex. Other amenities include a physician’s office and exam room to provide daily medical service for student-athletes. A drug-testing facility also is part of the complex. This expedites medical care because the student-athletes’ health care is self-contained. Also, UNLV’s academic program and its student athletic training benefit from a sports medicine library, study room and conference facility.

SCHOLARSHIP/SUPPORT STAFF The 2012 UNLV men’s soccer season marks the 38th year in which the Peter Johann Memorial Scholarship will benefit a Las Vegas native on the team. Junior midfielder Julian Portugal of Palo Verde High School in Las Vegas is this year’s scholarship recipient. He is the son of Julian and Maria Portugal. Since 1974, the UNLV men’s soccer program has been quite fortunate to have the support of Las Vegas businessman Ken Johann and his wife, Alice. It was that fall in 1974 when the Johanns’ son, Peter, died in a sporting accident. The next fall, the Johanns decided to honor their late son with a memorial scholarship. Established in 1975, the Peter Johann Memorial Scholarship assists one deserving student-athlete in attending classes at UNLV while participating in intercollegiate soccer. The scholarship is awarded to the student-athlete each season who demonstrates excellence in six areas: academic performance, techniques and tactics of soccer, team loyalty, cooperation, leadership and endurance. In return for their generosity, UNLV’s first-ever on-campus soccer field was dedicated to the memory of Peter Johann when it was built on the north side of the campus in 1983. The Rebels have called Peter Johann Memorial Field home for the past 30 years.

HEAD COACH
RICH RYERSON HEAD COACH FOURTH SEASON UNLV ‘87 Former Rebel standout Rich Ryerson was named the fifth head men’s soccer coach in UNLV program history on April 7, 2010. He took over the helm of the program after spending the previous two years as an assistant coach under former Rebel coach Mario Sanchez. “It was a dream come true, to become head coach at my alma mater,” said Ryerson. “UNLV has made such a big impact on my life, it’s been the foundation for everything I’ve accomplished and experienced in the sport of soccer.” In his first year as the Rebels’ head coach, Ryerson took a team that had 11 newcomers and coached it to a 6-11-2 mark. Seven of the 11 losses were by one goal, and UNLV pulled off several impressive victories, including a win at Stanford and both a win and tie against MPSF Mountain champion Denver. The Rebels struggled with injuries in 2011, but one big highlight was unheralded recruit Salvador Bernal of Las Vegas, a member of Ryerson’ first recruiting class who became the second player in team history to be named MPSF Newcomer of the Year. In Ryerson’s third season, the Rebels pulled off several noteworthy outings, including home victories over Cal State Northridge and Air Force, both eventual NCAA Tournament squads. Just as important as the coaching aspect of the job is Ryerson’s fundraising accomplishments. In the summer of 2011 he was able to help UNLV secure an $850,000 donation from the Englestad foundation, as well as other donations to help ensure the stability of the men’s program at UNLV for the next five years. One of four Ryerson brothers to play for the Rebels (Rob, Kenny, Tim), Rich Ryerson was a four-year starting defender/ midfielder for the Rebels from 1983-86 and led UNLV to three NCAA tournament appearances and three straight conference championships during his first time in Las Vegas. In his junior season, the Rebels posted a program-best 18-2-2 mark and No. 4 final national ranking, and that 1985 squad was inducted into the UNLV Athletic Hall of Fame on Oct. 1, 2010. A two-time all-region and all-conference selection, Ryerson scored 20 goals and had 20 assists. Ryerson started all 84 games during his time as a Rebel and still holds school records for both most career games played and most career starts. Ryerson was also named one of Soccer America’s Top-10 Freshmen of the Year in 1983.
14
Ryerson graduated from UNLV in 1987 with a bachelor’s of science degree in business administration. He went on to play a total of 10 years in several professional soccer leagues, including two in Kinna, Sweden, and finished his career in 1998 with the Baton Rouge Bombers of the Eastern Indoor Soccer League, where he was named the EISL’s Defensive Player of the Year. Beginning in 1994, Ryerson served as athletic director and physical education teacher for the Marywood-Palm Valley School, a K-12 program in Rancho Mirage, Calif., and he held that position until 2006 when he moved back to Las Vegas. He served as Director of Coaching for the Downtown Las Vegas Soccer Club for two years but stepped down from that position after accepting the Rebels’ head job. In 2010, Ryerson was the Nevada State Vice President for US Youth Soccer before changing positions to Director of Coaching for the association after taking over at UNLV. A native of Maryland, Ryerson was inducted into that state’s Soccer Hall of Fame on May 11, 2012. Ryerson is married to the former Vanes Valenzuela and they have two children, Vashti (17) and Payton (14).

2013 SEASON OUTLOOK The Rebels are hoping that a new beginning in the Western Athletic can also be the start of a new winning tradition When taking a look at the 2013 edition of the UNLV men’s soccer team, which is playing in its 40th season, two things stand out as the biggest storylines going into the year. The first is that the Rebels have a new place to call home, as they make the switch to the Western Athletic Conference after spending the past 14 seasons in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. UNLV returns to the WAC after playing 1996-98 seasons in the league, and is one of five teams that made the switch over in the offseason. Just as important, though, is who did not make the switch, as New Mexico, who had dominated the league the past nine years, is off to Conference USA, while Denver, another traditional power in the MPSF, will play in the Summit League. Those developments, combined with the big losses the remaining teams experienced, leave UNLV with the opportunity this year to make a strong challenge for a league title. It will not be easy, however, as UNLV head coach Rich Ryerson notes that Air Force, 2012 MPSF Tournament champions, still brings back a strong squad while CSU Bakersfield is the favorite with a deep team to help offset losses to the MLS. The other difference for this year’s Rebels from the past, is that for the first time in his four years at the helm of the squad, Ryerson feels he can legitimately go two-deep at every single position. “This senior class is the first recruiting class that Liam (Associate Head coach Liam Connors) and myself brought in. We basically had to come in with a fresh start back in 2010, but now it has finally come full circle and we have the team we envisioned building eventually. “The first few years, I felt like we were recruiting players not for only for positions, but also just to be able to fill out the roster,” continued Ryerson. “Now we’re at a position where the quality of players, from the top all the way down to the end of the bench, has risen greatly, and we have the advantage of being able to recruit specifically for positions and talents. That is the best sign of progress to me. We have players now that would have started two years ago that will be fighting just to get on the travel squad this season, and that is a very nice problem to have.” Having a deep squad isn’t the only reason for Ryerson’s optimism entering the season. He also notes that this is the best shape the team has even been in coming into preseason practices. They are training and competiting at a higher level than ever before in his four years, and the team is united in its goal to reach the top of the Western Athletic.
such a great scoring threat,” said Ryerson. Bernal takes full advantage of his low center of gravity while eluding defenders while on an attack, and is one of the best finishes in the league as well. Joining Bernal up front will be another Las Vegas native, Joaquin Rivas, who has the potential to score several goals this year, and has come back in the best shape of his career after playing this summer in the PDL in Vermont. Sophomore Corey Ackley will also be in the mix for significant playing time up front, if not challinging for a starting role, while freshman Rafael Munoz (Las Vegas) rounds out the forwards.
MIDFIELDERS This could turn out to be the true strength of the Rebels in 2013, with several key returnees being joined by some potential breakout freshmen. First up is junior Julian Portugal. “We look to Julian to keep us organized on the field, and he does a great job of keeping a balance between offense and defense. He also came up big last year with
BERNAL
FORWARDS This is the group that will have the most attention from opposing teams, and it all starts with junior Salvador Bernal. A Las Vegas native, he was the 2011 MPSF Newcomer of the Year, and the only underclassman to earn first team honors last year after leading the Rebels in scoring with 21 points. That places him as the top returning scorer from any WAC team coming into the season. “Sal is such a dynamic and unpredictable player, which is partly what makes him

2013 SEASON OUTLOOK several key goals,” said Ryerson. At one point, Portugal scored five goals in a six-game stretch, with one being a game-winner. Also returning are senior Jose Mendoza and sophomore Rodrigo Fuentes, both of him scored seven points a year ago. “Jose will be one of our leaders on the field this year, while Rodrigo had a great freshman year and we hope that continues on for this season,” said Ryerson. Sophomore Andy Rodriguez also returns for the Rebels after starting in eight games a year ago. UNLV adds five newcomers to the group, starting with potential starters Kevin Partida, a freshman from Sparks, Nev., and Carlos Lara, a Las Vegas native and junior transfer from soccer power Yavapai CC. “Kevin possesses a lot of the same traits as Sal, and we are all excited to see what he can do for us on the field this year. Carlos, meanwhile has a great work ethic, reads the game as well as anyone on the team and has great potential.” The other newcomers include sophomore Irvin Somera (Reno, Nev.), and freshmen Mitch Meyers (Orondo, Wash.), Blake Balelo (Las Vegas) and Cody Massey (Las Vegas).

DEFENSE This could be the deepest area on the team, with six different players fighting for three of the four starting positions. One newcomer, sophomore Bradley Kamdem (Paris, France), is penciled in as one starter. The six players involved in the position battles are returnees Jason Khamvongsa (sophomore), Connor Coletti (junior), Kyle Mellies (junior), Aaron Goo (sophomore) as well as a pair of newcomers, freshman Oskar Vejlo (Sandviken, Sweden) and junior Sebastian Hernandez. With those last two players, despite being new to the team they do have experience. Vejlo is a 20-year old freshman who played with the first division in Sweden, while Hernandez was a twotime All-American at Lassen College. Also adding to the Rebels’ depth at the position is sophomore Ricky Acero.
GOALKEEPERS UNLV will have five goalkeepers on its roster this season, including a pair that have each started a season before. Junior Ryan Harding comes back to the team after redshirting 2012 while undergoing successful cancer treatments, while senior Joe Vitale started all 21 games last year after transferring in from San Francisco. Both are in the mix for the starting role this season. Junior Richard Garness started all the games in the spring for UNLV, and will be looked at as well. Joining the roster is freshman Brad Holub, who was in the Colorado Rapids youth club program, while Abdel Rodriguez returns to his hometown after two years as the starting keeper for Lakeland College.

2012-YEAR IN REVIEW The Rebels had high hopes entering the 2012 season, but first had to endure the first four games of the season in which several key starters were forced to miss the contests. Though the Rebels would play tough in all four (a tie and three onegoal losses, all on the road) the lack of momentum seemed to be the Rebels’ downfall as the year went on. UNLV would pull off several noteworthy wins, but also managed back-toback wins only once during the year. Despite that, the Rebels would earn a spot in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament, which was one of the goals entering the season, after placing sixth in the league. UNLV began the season with four road games in California, starting with a 1-0 loss at UC Davis (Aug. 24) and 2-1 setback at No. 18 Saint Mary’s (Aug. 26). Freshman Rodrigo Fuentes’ first career goal led to a 1-1 overtime tie at Loyola Marymount (Aug. 31), and UNLV was playing for a second straight tie before falling in double-overtime 2-1 at Cal State Fullerton (Sept. 2). Next up was the home opener against Cal State Northridge. Back at full strength for the first time in 2012, UNLV took down the Matadors (an eventual NCAA tournament team)
42
by a 3-1 score on Sept. 7, thanks to goals from sophomore Salvador Bernal and seniors Nick Marshall and Robert Garcia. Next was the third double-overtime contest in four games, a 4-3 loss to UC Riverside on Sept. 9. The following weekend was the UNLV Nike Invitational, and after a tight 1-0 loss to Big East member Syracuse, UNLV routed Canisius 5-1, thanks to a two-goal, one assist performance from Marshall. It was back to California for another three-game stretch, which resulted in losses in all three for UNLV, including the conference opener at CSU Bakersfield. The Rebels earned their first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation win of 2012 at home over Seattle (Oct. 5) with sophomore Julian Portugal, senior Mike Mota and Bernal also posting goals in the win. A chance for a second straight win came up just short as San Jose State (Oct. 7) surprised the team, 2-1. UNLV knew it needed to make a big move if it wanted to make a return to the conference tournament, standing 1-2 in league play and only the top six teams advancing to the MPSF Tournament. And a move the Rebels made, going on the road to pick up two key wins and six points in the conference standings. First was a come-from-behind victory at Seattle

thanks to the play of Bernal who both scored and assissted on the winning goal in the 2-1 victory on Oct. 12. Next was a trip to San Jose, and the Rebels avenged the loss from the prior week by scoring three unanswered in the final 25 minutes, with senior Eddie Vega’s game-winner in the 88th minute giving UNLV the win and a third conference victory. Two more road games followed, and UNLV lost both at New Mexico (Oct. 19) and at Houston Baptist (Oct. 21) before coming back to Peter Johann Field for the final three home games of the year. First up was Air Force, and UNLV again rallied for a win, keyed by two goals from Mota, including the game-winner in overtime for a 3-2 upset win over the Falcons, the eventual MPSF champions. The regular season would end with the Rebels at 6-13-1, but more importantly, 4-6 in league play, good for 12 points and the No. 6 seed in the MPSF Tournament. That would result in a rematch with the Falcons, who this time came out on top 4-2 in the first round on Nov. 8.

2013 UNLV MEN’S ’ SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE
BACK TO THE WAC After completing its 50th year of intercollegiate competition, the Western Athletic Conference continues to evolve and feature some of the nation’s best programs. One thing that remains unchanged is the persistent nature of the schools in the WAC to advance their programs to contend at the top levels of the NCAA. The WAC provides its student-athletes the chance to travel to scenic destinations and gain exposure in some of the nation’s most diverse markets and largest metropolitan cities. In addition, the WAC’s studentathletes work to achieve the highest levels of success with the academic support of their respective institutions. The WAC has experienced tremendous success over the years. In men’s basketball, the WAC has sent at least two teams to the NCAA Tournament in 24 of the past 29 seasons. In baseball, the WAC has boasted two national champions since 2003. In women’s basketball, the conference has had at least two teams qualify for the NCAA Tournament 10 times in 22 seasons, with a record five teams in 1998. The WAC also sent teams to three BCS football bowl games since 2006. In 2013-14, the WAC will create a new digital network to give fans streaming internet access to many of its regular season games and postseason championships including volleyball, soccer, swimming and diving, basketball, softball and baseball. The WAC is the sixth oldest among the nation’s 11 Division I-A conferences. Its history traces back to July 27, 1962, when the original six-team league of Arizona, Arizona State, Brigham Young, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming began competition. The first championship was held in November 1962, when Arizona won the men’s cross country title and New Mexico followed with the first WAC football title. Arizona finished second in the NCAA College World Series and, less than three years later, Arizona State claimed the league’s first NCAA title when the Sun Devils won the College World Series trophy. Fresno State was the last WAC school to earn an NCAA team title when it won the College World Series in 2008. The WAC has had just six commissioners in its history. Paul Brechler was named the first leader of the conference and held the position from 1962-1968. He was followed by Wiles Hallock (1968-71), Stan Bates (1971-80), Dr. Joe Kearney (1980-94), Karl Benson (1994-2012) and current commissioner Jeff Hurd (2012-present). Presently, the WAC crowns team and individual champions in 19 sports – nine men’s and 10 women’s. For the men, there are championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. Championships for women are held in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and volleyball. The WAC office has been located in the Denver area since the conference’s inception with the exception of a two-year stay in Phoenix from 1964-66.

With its Performing Arts Center, the campus is the cultural hub of Southern Nevada. World-class orchestras and soloists, dance and theater arts combine to provide a broad selection of concerts and stage productions. The Barrick Lecture Series and several campus organizations bring noted speakers to the University, and local and visiting artists show their works in the Donna Beam Fine Art Gallery. UNLV has excellent athletic facilities as well, many open for student and public use. Opened in 1957 as the southern regional division of the University of Nevada with a total of 28 students, UNLV now is home to more than 27,000 students coming from every county in Nevada, all 50 U.S. states and 88 countries. Much of UNLV’s tremendous expansion is the result of support from the Nevada Legislature and the state’s taxpayers. Private donors have played an important role as well. These gifts support new facilities and programs and, most important, provide the scholarship incentives that bring Nevada’s best and brightest student scholars to campus. UNLV operates an on-campus Center for Business and Economic Research, Center for Economic Education, Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies (in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency), Desert Biology Research Center, Center for Survey Research, Nuclear Waste Transportation Research Center and other research and public-service centers. Offering 103 undergraduate programs and 123 graduate tracts, UNLV graduated a class of 5,500 last year. The University operates on a semester system and is a member of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the Council of Graduate Schools, the American Council of Education and the Western College Association. All of the University’s academic programs are fully accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, and many programs have received further accreditation from independent national accreditation bodies.

SMATRESK
Dr. Neal J. Smatresk was appointed president of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on Aug. 6, 2009. Today, he leads a campus that is committed to serving Nevada by creating an educated workforce and forging community and business partnerships to move our state economy forward. Under his leadership, the central role UNLV plays in creating a prosperous future by providing an affordable, superior education and nationally recognized scholarship has been a consistent theme. Smatresk emphasizes UNLV’s role as a first-choice, Tier 1 institution dedicated to educational access and success for diverse students. Under Smatresk’s direction, UNLV established the Academic Success Center, which is living up to its name by helping students identify the right majors, succeed in their classes, and graduate on time. Student athletes are advised through the center, and are excelling academically. UNLV is a collaborative university that crosses internal and external boundaries. A testament to Smatresk’s vision is a new Collaborative Research and Education initiative an UNLV’s partnership with the highly respected Brookings Institution to establish Brookings Mountain West, the national think tank’s first foray this side of the Mississippi. Through a recently formed UNLV Campus Improvement Authority, Smatresk is working with the community through a public-private partnership to create a world-class stadium that will enhance campus life and bring new major entertainment opportunities to Las Vegas. Through these and other community partnerships, and a commitment to respond to the state’s workforce demands, UNLV is driving research and innovation needed to diversify the region’s economic base and provide critically needed services for a dynamic region. Smatresk is a scientist by training and received his Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1980. Following post-doctoral work at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Smatresk joined the University of Texas, Arlington (UTA) department of biology in 1982. In his 22 years at UTA, he served as chair of biology and dean of science, until his appointment as the chief academic officer at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2004. During his time there, Hawaii’s flagship university entered the ranks of the top 25 federally funded institutions, gained three National Academy of Science members, and received recognition from the Chinese Ministry of Education as a Confucius Institute. His career at UNLV began in 2007 as executive vice president and provost, where he was responsible for the leadership and administration of all academic and research programs, spanning 15 colleges and two professional schools. President Smatresk has received numerous teaching awards, and his research in cardio respiratory physiology has resulted in more than 50 papers and book chapters and grants from the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health. KUNZER-MURPHY
Born and raised in Las Vegas, Tina KunzerMurphy has been a fixture in the Southern Nevada sports community for more than four decades. On July 1, 2013, she added another accomplishment to her long and varied career as she began serving as UNLV Interim Director of Athletics. The move, announced by UNLV President Neal Smatresk on May 20, marked two major milestones as Kunzer-Murphy became both the first woman and the first alum of the school to oversee the department. “Tina Kunzer-Murphy has agreed to step into the role of interim athletic director on the heels of Jim Livengood’s retirement,” Smatresk said. “Tina brings a wealth of experience to UNLV and I am truly grateful that she will be serving in this critical role.” A graduate of Valley High School, KunzerMurphy first attended Southern Utah, where she lettered in swimming, before transferring to UNLV to compete in both tennis and volleyball at her hometown university. She earned her bachelor’s degree in physical education from the school in 1975. While pursuing a graduate degree she served as a tennis instructor and dance teacher at both UNLV and Clark County Community College (now CSN). Soon after earning her master’s in education in 1977, she was hired as head coach of the UNLV women’s tennis team as well as director of its cheerleading program. When the school dropped tennis for financial reasons in the early 1980s, she was thrust into a management role under then-athletics director Brad Rothermel, and eventually worked with the football and basketball programs, among others, during the department’s wildly successful run through the PCAA/Big West Conference. Named UNLV’s
Senior Women’s Administrator in 1981, KunzerMurphy oversaw the entire Lady Rebel athletic program, as well as various support groups such as the Rebel Football Foundation, the Rebel Golf Foundation and the Women’s Sports Foundation, which she helped create. In 1983, she was named an assistant athletics director and in 1987 was promoted to senior assistant AD. Kunzer-Murphy became senior associate AD at the University of Pacific in 1992 but then soon returned to town to work for the Las Vegas 51s and Thunder professional sports franchises as director of corporate sales and marketing. After UNLV moved to the Western Athletic Conference in 1996, Kunzer-Murphy was hired by the WAC to run its annual football championship game and men’s and women’s basketball championship events in Las Vegas. Kunzer-Murphy returned to campus in 1999 when she was selected by ESPN Regional Television (ERT) to run the newly formed ESPN Regional at UNLV office, which oversaw the athletic department’s corporate sales and broadcasting departments until 2005. From 2000-12, Kunzer-Murphy served as Executive Director of the Las Vegas Bowl, which ERT purchased. Under her leadership, the bowl game enjoyed six consecutive sellouts from 2006-11, record-high TV ratings and team payouts en route to elevating itself into the national college football landscape A 2007 inductee of the Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame, Kunzer-Murphy in 2010 became the first woman to serve as Chairman of the Football Bowl Association. she was honored as Las Vegas’ Sportsperson of the Year as part of the annual “24-Hour Radiothon” staged by Lotus Broadcasting, which benefits The Caring Place, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to easing the journey of those affected by cancer. Kunzer-Murphy returned to work for her alma mater in January of 2013 when she was named Director of Sponsorships and Development for the UNLV Alumni Association. She has one son, Stephen, and has been married to former UNLV coach and local high school teacher and coach Greg Murphy since 1990.

hall of fame HALL HALL OF OF FAME FAME HALL OF FAME
Class of 2012
Seven different Rebel sports were represented during ceremonies as the UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2012 was honored Oct. 12, 2012. Six former Rebel standout players, one head coach and a distinguished contributor joined one team in being inducted the night before the Battle for the Fremont Cannon football game between UNLV and Nevada, Reno. Also being honored that night was former Rebel football player and current TV personality, Kenny Mayne, who received the Silver Rebel Award Born in 1987, UNLV’s Athletics Hall of Fame has now grown to 114 members strong. Under the hall’s bylaws, former student-athletes must have completed their eligibility at least 10 years earlier to be selected. Coaches and administrators must have stopped working at the University five years previous. All classes now enter on a biennial basis.
FRED ALBRECHT (1974-83, 1995, 2003) The winningest coach in UNLV tennis history, led the Rebel netters and compiled a record of 230-80 for a winning percentage of .742. A longtime administrator on campus, Albrecht was called upon to serve as Interim Athletics Director in both 1995 and 2003 during searches for permanent replacements. He retired from UNLV in 2007 after 38 years with a final title of vice president for university and community relations. LORENA DIACONESCU (1998-02) is arguably the Rebels women’s swimming program’s most decorated athlete. She won three consecutive Conference Swimmer of the Year awards from 2000-02 while setting school records in six separate events. Diaconescu earned All-America in 2000 and was honorable mention one year later. Winner of eight MW individual crowns as well as seven relay titles, she was also a two-time Olympian for her home country of Romania. LINDA FROHLICH (1998-02) The highest-scoring basketball player in UNLV history – men’s or women’s – finished with 2,355 points and a 21.2 PPG average in her dominating hoops career. The native of Oldendorf, Germany, was named USBWA National Freshman of the Year in 1999, AP Honorable Mention All-America as a sophomore and junior and then Third Team as a senior. EDDIE OWENS (1973-77) Still the leading Runnin’ Rebel scorer in history, was the emerging program’s second All-American in men’s basketball when he was tabbed First Team by a pair of outlets as a junior in 1976. JACINT SIMON (1998-2002) turned in a career in the water that rivaled any in school history. The Mountain West Swimmer of the Year three consecutive seasons earned All-America honors at the 2000 NCAA Championships while also being honorable mention in two relays. His fourth All-America finish came in 2002. Simon won 10 conference championships as an individual and one on a relay team and swam for his home nation of Hungary in the 2000 Summer Olympics. AMIE STEWART (1992-95) was a dominant pitcher for dominant softball program in the mid-1990s. A second team All-America selection as a senior in 1995, her 30-9 mark is still the school record for wins a season. She led her team all the way to the Women’s College World Series and tossed two complete games while finishing with a .95 ERA en route to becoming the only Rebel to be named to a WCWS All-Tournament Team. KEVIN THOMAS (1998-01) Arguably the top cornerback in school history, still holds numerous school and conference defensive records. The first player in school history to start 46 games, Thomas was the first defensive player from UNLV to earn All-America status in 26 years when he was named Third Team by Football News and Fourth Team by Sporting News. The 1984 UNLV FOOTBALL TEAM was the first of two in school history to win a conference championship and its 11-2 overall record included a victory over Toledo in the California Bowl. Going undefeated in the PCAA, the talent-rich squad featured the conference Offensive Player of the Year in All-America punter/quarterback Randall Cunningham; the Defensive Player of the Year in lineman Aaron Moog; and the Coach of the Year in Harvey Hyde. DISTINGUISHED CONTRIBUTOR MIKE MILLER is noted Las Vegas artist and illustrator. During the 1980s, Miller created and named the cartoon man with the long moustache known as “Hey Reb.” Miller was paid a single dollar for his work, which eventually helped UNLV vault to the top spot in college apparel licensing.
