FACILITIES

PETER JOHANN MEMORIAL FIELD The dedication of Peter Johann Memorial Soccer Field during the 1983 season marked a special occasion for all those who were involved with the building of UNLV’s first on-campus soccer facility. Despite the fact that UNLV soccer has been around since 1974, Rebel teams in the past never truly had a “home field” to call their own. And, when former men’s soccer head coach Barry Barto assumed his position prior to the 1982 season, building an on-campus soccer field became a priority. Barto approached then-athletics director Brad Rothermel to work out a solution to the problem and the two settled on the current location, where the old softball field had previously existed. Once the site was finalized, a huge community effort was instrumental in the building of the soccer field. The field is named after the late son of Kenneth F. Johann, a real estate businessman who has lived in Las Vegas for more than 40 years. Johann has been a strong 4

supporter of Rebel soccer and he and his wife, Alice, set up a scholarship fund in memory of their son. Thus, Johann was more than happy to be a part of the overall community effort. Johann Field played host to the 1983 ISAA Senior Bowl All-Star Game where the West team posted a 4-0 victory. Numerous international matches have also been played on its pitch and it is also the site of the annual UNLV/Nike Soccer Classic for both the men’s and women’s squads. The facility has also played host to three Las Vegas Soccer Spectaculars. The inaugural contest in 2002 featured the WUSA’s San Jose CyberRays and the San Diego Spirit, while in the spring of 2003, the Boston Breakers took on San Jose. The final spectacular was in March of 2003, between UNLV and the Mexican Olympic Team, who had just claimed a spot in the 2004 Athens Games. In the spring of 2007, a sellout crowd watched the first-ever MLS contest on the UNLV campus, as Real 2013 UNLV WOMEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

PETER JOHANN MEMORIAL FIELD Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids played to a 0-0 draw in an exhibition contest on March 31. The women’s soccer team reached its 50th victory on its home field in the quarterfinals of the 2005 MW Tournament and three days later won the tournament championship, the first-ever won by a UNLV squad at Johann Field, with a 1-0 overtime victory over New Mexico in the title game. The women’s team has hosted a total of four MW championships at Johann Field, and made the championship game in two of the four tournaments (2001 and 2005). With the addition of endzone seats in 1997, the grandstands now offer seating for approximately 2,500 spectators in an open seating arrangement, and the facility boasts natural grass, a press box, and lights for night matches. The facility was most recently upgraded during the summer of 2006, as a $300,000 renovation led to a new irrigation system as well as new sod and grass for the field. Generally regarded as one of the top college soccer facilities in the West, Johann Field celebrates its 31st season in 2013.

The MW Tournament has been held at UNLV in 2001, 2002, 2005 and 2008.

UNLV HEAD COACH

MICHAEL COLL HEAD COACH SECOND SEASON PENN STATE ‘97 Michael Coll became the fifth head coach in UNLV women’s soccer history when he was hired on April 1, 2012, and he wasted no time in making an immediate impact on the Rebel program. In his first season at the helm of the team, Coll simply guided the Rebels to a school-record 12-4-4 season, as the .700 winning percentage was the highest in UNLV history. The 12 wins complied by the squad also tied for the second-most in school history, despite playing only 20 games, while the four losses were the fewest-ever in a season at UNLV. After a 1-2-1 start to begin the year, Coll’s coaching began to take affect on the squad, leading to a schoolrecord seven-game win streak, which started with one of the highlights of the year, a double-overtime victory over Oklahoma.

14

The spurt also led into a nine-game unbeaten streak, also a new UNLV mark, which was only snapped by a one-goal loss to seventh-ranked San Diego State. The Rebels would eventually reach the semifinals of the Mountain West Tournament for the third straight year before falling to San Diego State on its home field. Under Coll, a school-record three Rebels were named all-region, while four players earned first team All-MW honors, also a program best. Coll came to Las Vegas from Penn State, where he was an assistant coach for the women’s soccer program for eight years. During his tenure on the Nittany Lions’ staff, he helped guide the squad to five appearances in the NCAA Sweet 16, as well as a trip to the national

2013 SEASON OUTLOOK Rebels look to build on success from last season as they enter year two under coach Michael Coll The Rebels were not sure what to expect at the start of the 2012 campaign, beginning the preseason with a completely new coaching staff and trying to adjust to a new system as well. And as expected, there were a few growing pains in the first two weeks of the season, as UNLV posted a 1-2-1 record in the first four games. All of a sudden however it came together for the Rebels. First-year head coach Michael Coll helped guide the team to a school-record seven game unbeaten streak, and UNLV would finish one of the best seasons in school history at 12-4-4. More impressive, of the four losses on the year, two came in the first nine days of the season, while the only two setbacks the rest of the season came at the hands of top-10 ranked San Diego State. “The players performed very very well last year, especially dealing with a new staff and a whole new way of doing things,” said Coll. “Winning the two tournaments at home really set the tone for the rest of the season. While there’s no doubt the season was a huge success, Coll can’t help but look back at the four ties during the season, including the three coming in Mountain West play. His biggest goal for the Rebels’ this season is to turn those ties into wins, knowing that they can’t afford to lose those points in the team standings and still hope to challenge for the conference title. UNLV will also have to find a way to replace a stellar senior class that included a pair of All-Pacific Region selections in defender Caitlin Allen (now a member of the coaching staff) and midfielder Macy Jo Harrison, who set the school record with eight assists last season. “Though we had great leadership from our seniors last year, we feel we have the same kind of outstanding leaders on the field with this year’s senior team captains,” said Coll. “When you take that and combine it with the impressive performances put on by our underclassmen in our spring season, we feel we can build on that and have the chance for a very successful year.” Players that Coll is looking at to make a bigger impact due to their spring performances include midfielder Erica Meier and defenders Hayley Wilson (‘a pleasant surprise’) and Samantha Weber. Coll also brings up the Rebels’ performance on the road last season, in which they were 5-2-3, with the two losses coming at the hands of NCAA teams. That experience will be key for this year, as UNLV will play a total of 13 games away from Las Vegas compared to just seven home contests. “We will be road weary this year, there’s no escaping that, but we only lost two games on the road last year. so I expect us to be road ready,” said Coll. “We’ll have confidence that we can win no matter where the game is played.”

scoring opportunities.” After only starting half the contests as a sophomore, Wolfe exploded on the scene last season, scoring 26 points off 12 goals, and ranked among the nation’s leaders with six game-winners while earning All-MW and All-Region honors. Joining her up front will be Gaby Vazquez, who redshirted in 2012 but looked strong in the spring. Four freshmen will all have a chance to contribute, and Coll fully expects at least one to break into the starting lineup. They include Las Vegas native Dakota Blazak, Brittney Gideon and Lily Sender (both from Honolulu) and Miranda Rawlings (North Bend, Wash.).

MIDFIELDERS Once again, when talking about a position leader we lead with a senior tri-captain, this time Courtney Botelho, a first-team allconference selection last season. “Courtney’s ability to move with and without the ball and to change direction in a flash of a second is a huge advantage to our attack,” said Coll. “We know that when

FORWARDS When you look at the forwards, you have to start with senior tri-captain Jenn Wolfe. “The player everyone will mark and doubleteam after her breakout year last year,” noted Coll. “But I feel she’s going to have good backups that should help her to get open for

He is just as happy, however, about tthe quality of freshman players in the group, giving the Rebels a ddepth at the position they did not have a year ago. Coll feels he can rrealistically go 7-8 players deep at the defender spot. New to the ddefenders this season are freshmen Isabelle Delgado (Honolulu), K Kendall Sandoval (La Canada, Calif.), Michaela Kelsey (El D Dorado, Calif.).

GOALKEEPERS G BOTELHO she has the ball, we’re going to keep position.” Susie Bernal comes back after an outstanding freshman season in which she finished third on the team with 11 points (four goals, three assists), and has the potential to post even higher numbers in 2013. Also looking to be in the mix for starting roles again will be junior Denali Murnan, who fought through several injuries to become a good contributor to the team last year, while sophomore Addy Guida could be making a move to the center midfield spot after starting seven games in 2012; and Meier made 15 starts in her second season. A fourth returnee is Nicole Candioglos, whose ability in the air could earn her minutes this season. Two freshmen join the group, Courtney Anderson (Las Vegas) and Jordan Magnin (Temecula, Calif.).

DEFENSE This was a group that allowed only 19 total goals last year over 20 games, and the majority of the defenders do return. However, there will be a big void because of the graduation of Allen, a fouryear starter and one of the best defenders on the West Coast. To help make up for that loss, Coll will be looking for the players to step up as a group. “It’s a good, deep group we have. Our returning players, they all played the majority of our spring games, and the experience that they gained in learning how to play with each other, they should be well ready for the start of this season.” Coll singled out Wilson, Weber, and Meier (who will see time at both midfield and as a midfielder) as players that will be looked

Senior Kylie Wassell will be the Rebels’ starting goalie for tthe fourth straight year and has become an elite player. She setta nnew UNLV mark last season with 10 shutouts and was the only ggoalkeeper in the Mountain West to earn all-league honors. “We need Kylie to be great this year. We don’t expect anything but her best, and its a great feeling when you know you have the league’s best goalkeeper guarding your net,” said Coll. Backing up Wassell will be redshirt junior Kelli McCracklin, while the Rebels will also carry two freshman netminders in Emily Casale (Las Vegas) and Kylie Ojers (Reno, Nev.).

2012 YEAR-IN-REVIEW The Rebels were a little unsure of what to expect coming into the 2012 season, as they were coming in with a completely new coaching staff, while also having lost almost half of their goal scoring from the prevous year. But after a slow start, UNLV quickly gelled under the direction of first-year head coach Michael Coll. In fact, the Rebels would become one of the hottest teams in the nation by midseason, with a school-record seven-game win streak and nine-game unbeaten streak, and would finish the year with a 12-4-4 mark while setting a new program high for winning percentage (.700). While several starters from the previous year continued to make significant contributions on the field (most notably, seniors Macy Jo Harrison and Caitlin Allen and juniors Courtney Botelho and Kylie Wassell), one of the biggest differences from 2011 came when Coll moved junior striker Jenn Wolfe off the bench and into a starting role. After scoring three goals as a part-time starter in her sophomore season, Wolfe flourished in her full-time gig, scoring 12 goals while ranking among the nation’s leading scorers for the majority of the season. She also notched six game-winners for the year, including four during the Rebels’ seven-game win streak, and would finish as one of three players to receive second team all-region recognition. UNLV would give Coll a victory in his first game as the Rebels’ head coach, a 2-0 home win over Northern Arizona (Aug. 17) that also featured the first goal of the year from Wolfe. Next up was Hawaii on Aug. 19, and UNLV appeared to take the Rainbow Wahine lightly, falling behind by three scores before making a late charge. It would come too late, however, with UNLV falling 5-4 in the highest scoring game in program history. Looking to bounce back from their first defeat, the Rebels took off for the Kansas Invitational, where they tied South Dakota State (Aug. 24) 0-0 in double-overtime, before taking on the host Kansas Jayhawks

(Aug. 26). Although the Rebels would fall by a 3-0 score, they made Kansas work hard the entire game, and the improvement in the team from the Hawaii game continued. It all came together the next week in the UNLV Rebel Classic. Taking on Big 12 member Oklahoma (Aug. 31), the Rebels came away with a 2-1 double-overtime victory thanks to a header from Julie Owens, and followed that with a golden goal from Wolfe in the second game of the tournament against Florida Atlantic in a 2-1 win on Sept. 2. Those two wins started the seven-game win streak, and while Wolfe was key with her scoring binge, the most impressive play came on the defensive side. Starting with the Oklahoma contest, UNLV held nine straight opponents to just one goal or less, including four shutouts. The Rebels would post 2-0 records in three straight tourneys, the Rebel Classic, the UNLV Nike Invitational (with wins over Sacramento State and Montana), and at the High Altitude Tournament hosted by Northern Arizona, where the Rebels took down San Jose State 5-1 (Sept. 14) and Florida Gulf Coast 2-1 (Sept. 16). UNLV followed the win over FGCU with a one-goal victory over Idaho (1-0) at home on Sept. 23, for the record seventh-straight win. The win streak was stopped in the next contest as UNLV was forced to settle for a 0-0 double-overtime tie with Wyoming on Sept. 29 in the Mountain West season opener for both teams. The unbeaten streak was still alive though, and continued for one more game, a 1-0 win at Air Force on Oct. 5, thanks to a game-winner from Colorado native Denali Murnan. Then came the biggest game to date, a home contest against preseason favorite and seventh-ranked San Diego State on Oct. 12. In front of a season-high crowd of 1,149 Rebel fans, UNLV scored early and led 1-0 at the half, but thanks to a pair of goals in the second half, including one off a penalty kick, the Aztecs escaped with a 2-1 win,

The Rebels put together a school-record seven-game win streak in 2012 on the way to a 12-win season.

snapping the unbeaten streak at nine. The Rebels bounced back quickly, however, claiming a Senior Day 2-0 victory over New Mexico (Oct. 14) thanks to goals from Harrison and Wolfe, which snapped the Lobos’ conference unbeaten streak at 17 games. Playing its final three of the regular season on the road, the Rebels were unable to move up the standings after a pair of ties, 0-0 at Nevada, Reno (Oct. 19) and 1-1 at Boise State (Oct. 21). Hoping to earn the third seed in the MW Tournament, the Rebels closed out the conference slate with a 1-0 win at Fresno State on Oct. 27, thanks to a score from star freshman Susie Bernal. However, UNLV could not pass Boise State in the points standings and would be the fourth seed in the conference tournament, settling for a rematch with Fresno State in the first round. This time, the contest would not be as close as Wolfe, Murnan and Bernal all scored in a 3-0 shutout of the Bulldogs, sending UNLV to the semifinals for the third straight year. Facing the host SDSU Aztecs on their home field, UNLV came up short in a 3-0 loss to the eventual champions. Wolfe and Allen were both named to the all-tournament squad. Despite the MW tournament loss, the Rebels were excited with the success of the season, which did not go unnoticed by the college soccer world. A school-record three players earned NSCAA AllPacific Region honors, as Harrison, Allen and Wolfe were all second-team selections. The trio was also joined by Botelho in receiving All-Mountain West first-team honors. Wassell was the only goalkeeper in the MW to earn all-conference honors with a second team nod. UNLV continued to have outstanding success in the classroom as well. Wassell became the program’s first-ever CoSIDA Academic All-American (third team), while a record four-players were named Academic All-District: Allen, Botelho, Wassell and Wolfe.

THIS IS THE MOUNTAIN WEST The Mountain West was conceived on May 26, 1998, when the presidents of eight institutions — Air Force, BYU, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming — decided to form a new NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletic conference. The split from a former 16-team conference re-established continuity and stability among the membership within the new league and signaled the continuation of its tradition-rich, long-standing athletic rivalries. Three of the MW’s eight original members have been conference rivals since the 1960s (New Mexico, Wyoming and Colorado State), while San Diego State (1978) and Air Force (1980) were longtime members as well. UNLV entered the fold in 1996 and the Rebels continued as one of the original eight institutions that formed the MW in 1999. With conference realignment sweeping the nation in recent years, the MW has been proactive in addressing membership changes. Boise State joined the Mountain West in 2011, followed by Fresno State and Nevada, Reno in 2012. That’s the same year that the University of Hawai‘i became a football-only member of the Conference. On July 1, 2013, the Mountain West further expanded when San Jose State and Utah State joined, bringing to 11 the number of full-time member institutions and 12 football-playing members. ACHIEVEMENTS Mountain West members have participated in 56 bowl games under the league umbrella, including four appearances in BCS games. The MW has earned 68 postseason bids in men’s basketball, including 38 NCAA Tournament appearances and two NIT Final Four berths. MW women’s basketball has tallied 60 postseason slots, including 32 NCAA bids, five Sweet 16 appearances and one Elite Eight berth since 2000. Wyoming won the MW’s first WNIT championship in 2007 with a win over Wisconsin. In women’s volleyball, the MW has had 36 NCAA bids with eight Sweet 16 berths and one Elite Eight appearance. Women’s soccer has earned 27 NCAA bids since 1999, with two Sweet 16 berths and one Elite Eight appearance. MW men’s golf has had at least four representatives in 13 of the last 14 NCAA Golf Regionals, while women’s golf has had at least three teams participate in NCAA Regionals 11 of the last 14 years. The MW has produced 793 All-America selections among its 18 sponsored sports (men’s swimming was discontinued as a Conference sport following the 2010-11 season) in the last 14 years. A total of 131 MW student-athletes have also earned Academic All-America accolades in that span. The league has captured three team national championships in women’s cross country and produced 33 individual national champions. YEAR IN REVIEW From the gridiron to the diamond, Mountain West teams enjoyed an outstanding year in 2012-13. In football, the league sent a record five teams to bowl games for the sixth consecutive year, while Boise State closed out the 2012 season ranked among the top 15 for the fifth straight season. A league-record seven men’s basketball teams participated in postseason action, including a record five squads in the NCAA tournament, marking the 13th time in 14 years the MW has sent multiple teams to the Big Dance. Regular-season champion New Mexico captured the tournament to earn the MW’s automatic bid, while Boise State, Colorado State, San Diego State and UNLV received at-large invitations to the NCAA tournament. Five different Mountain West teams were ranked in at least one national poll at some point during the 2012-13 campaign, marking a first for the Conference. In women’s basketball, league newcomer Fresno State made its sixth consecutive NCAA tournament appearance after capturing the MW tournament crown to earn the Conference’s automatic bid. In women’s soccer, San Diego State advanced to the third round of the NCAA tournament after clinching both the MW regular-season and tournament crowns to earn the league’s automatic bid.

COMMISSIONER CRAIG THOMPSON Craig Thompson was the Mountain West Conference’s first employee when he was named Commissioner on Oct. 15, 1998. Ever since, Thompson has navigated the newest NCAA Division I conference through the ever-changing landscape of intercollegiate athletics. As the league enters its 15th season of competition in 2012-13, Thompson continues to create and improve the opportunities for Mountain West institutions and student-athletes to be successful both academically and athletically. Since the Mountain West opened its doors on Jan. 4, 1999, Thompson has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics, while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. Progressive in its approach, the MW has flourished under the guidance of Commissioner Thompson and continues to cultivate opportunities for student-athletes to compete at the highest level, while fostering academic achievement and sportsmanship. His leadership and vision have helped the conference enhance its television revenue and exposure through revolutionary agreements with CBS Sports Network, Comcast and ESPN, including becoming the first major collegiate athletic conference to launch a dedicated sports channel featuring exclusive programming around its athletic programs. Thompson graduated from the University of Minnesota with an undergraduate degree in journalism. Following graduation, he spent two years as assistant sports information director at Kansas State University. He then spent three years as director of public relations and promotions for the NBA’s Kansas City Kings. Thompson and his wife, Carla, have a son (Ted) and a daughter (Emma).

With its Performing Arts Center, the campus is the cultural hub of Southern Nevada. World-class orchestras and soloists, dance and theater arts combine to provide a broad selection of concerts and stage productions. The Barrick Lecture Series and several campus organizations bring noted speakers to the University, and local and visiting artists show their works in the Donna Beam Fine Art Gallery. UNLV has excellent athletic facilities as well, many open for student and public use. Opened in 1957 as the southern regional division of the University of Nevada with a total of 28 students, UNLV now is home to more than 27,000 students coming from every county in Nevada, all 50 U.S. states and 88 countries. Much of UNLV’s tremendous expansion is the result of support from the Nevada Legislature and the state’s taxpayers. Private donors have played an important role as well. These gifts support new facilities and programs and, most important, provide the scholarship incentives that bring Nevada’s best and brightest student scholars to campus. UNLV operates an on-campus Center for Business and Economic Research, Center for Economic Education, Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies (in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency), Desert Biology Research Center, Center for Survey Research, Nuclear Waste Transportation Research Center and other research and public-service centers. SMATRESK

Dr. Neal J. Smatresk was appointed president of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on Aug. 6, 2009. Today, he leads a campus that is committed to serving Nevada by creating an educated workforce and forging community and business partnerships to move our state economy forward. Under his leadership, the central role UNLV plays in creating a prosperous future by providing an affordable, superior education and nationally recognized scholarship has been a consistent theme. Smatresk emphasizes UNLV’s role as a first-choice, Tier 1 institution dedicated to educational access and success for diverse students. Under Smatresk’s direction, UNLV established the Academic Success Center, which is living up to its name by helping students identify the right majors, succeed in their classes, and graduate on time. Student athletes are advised through the center, and are excelling academically. UNLV is a collaborative university that crosses internal and external boundaries. A testament to Smatresk’s vision is a new Collaborative Research and Education initiative an UNLV’s partnership with the highly respected Brookings Institution to establish Brookings Mountain West, the national think tank’s first foray this side of the Mississippi. Through a recently formed UNLV Campus Improvement Authority, Smatresk is working with the community through a public-private partnership to create a world-class stadium that will enhance campus life and bring new major entertainment opportunities to Las Vegas. Through these and other community partnerships, and a commitment to respond to the state’s workforce demands, UNLV is driving research and innovation needed to diversify the region’s economic base and provide critically needed services for a dynamic region. Smatresk is a scientist by training and received his Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1980. Following post-doctoral work at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Smatresk joined the University of Texas, Arlington (UTA) department of biology in 1982. In his 22 years at UTA, he served as chair of biology and dean of science, until his appointment as the chief academic officer at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2004. During his time there, Hawaii’s flagship university entered the ranks of the top 25 federally funded institutions, gained three National Academy of Science members, and received recognition from the Chinese Ministry of Education as a Confucius Institute. His career at UNLV began in 2007 as executive vice president and provost, where he was responsible for the leadership and administration of all academic and research programs, spanning 15 colleges and two professional schools. President Smatresk has received numerous teaching awards, and his research in cardio respiratory physiology has resulted in more than 50 papers and book chapters and grants from the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health. His undergraduate alma mater, Gettysburg College, awarded him its Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award in 2011.

KUNZER-MURPHY

Born and raised in Las Vegas, Tina KunzerMurphy has been a fixture in the Southern Nevada sports community for more than four decades. On July 1, 2013, she added another accomplishment to her long and varied career as she began serving as UNLV Interim Director of Athletics. The move, announced by UNLV President Neal Smatresk on May 20, marked two major milestones as Kunzer-Murphy became both the first woman and the first alum of the school to oversee the department. “Tina Kunzer-Murphy has agreed to step into the role of interim athletic director on the heels of Jim Livengood’s retirement,” Smatresk said. “Tina brings a wealth of experience to UNLV and I am truly grateful that she will be serving in this critical role.” A graduate of Valley High School, KunzerMurphy first attended Southern Utah, where she lettered in swimming, before transferring to UNLV to compete in both tennis and volleyball at her hometown university. She earned her bachelor’s degree in physical education from the school in 1975. While pursuing a graduate degree she served as a tennis instructor and dance teacher at both UNLV and Clark County Community College (now CSN). Soon after earning her master’s in education in 1977, she was hired as head coach of the UNLV women’s tennis team as well as director of its cheerleading program. When the school dropped tennis for financial reasons in the early 1980s, she was thrust into a management role under then-athletics director Brad Rothermel, and eventually worked with the football and basketball programs, among others, during the department’s wildly successful run through the PCAA/Big West Conference. Named UNLV’s

Senior Women’s Administrator in 1981, KunzerMurphy oversaw the entire Lady Rebel athletic program, as well as various support groups such as the Rebel Football Foundation, the Rebel Golf Foundation and the Women’s Sports Foundation, which she helped create. In 1983, she was named an assistant athletics director and in 1987 was promoted to senior assistant AD. Kunzer-Murphy became senior associate AD at the University of Pacific in 1992 but then soon returned to town to work for the Las Vegas 51s and Thunder professional sports franchises as director of corporate sales and marketing. After UNLV moved to the Western Athletic Conference in 1996, Kunzer-Murphy was hired by the WAC to run its annual football championship game and men’s and women’s basketball championship events in Las Vegas. Kunzer-Murphy returned to campus in 1999 when she was selected by ESPN Regional Television (ERT) to run the newly formed ESPN Regional at UNLV office, which oversaw the athletic department’s corporate sales and broadcasting departments until 2005. From 2000-12, Kunzer-Murphy served as Executive Director of the Las Vegas Bowl, which ERT purchased. Under her leadership, the bowl game enjoyed six consecutive sellouts from 2006-11, record-high TV ratings and team payouts en route to elevating itself into the national college football landscape A 2007 inductee of the Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame, Kunzer-Murphy in 2010 became the first woman to serve as Chairman of the Football Bowl Association. she was honored as Las Vegas’ Sportsperson of the Year as part of the annual “24-Hour Radiothon” staged by Lotus Broadcasting, which benefits The Caring Place, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to easing the journey of those affected by cancer. Kunzer-Murphy returned to work for her alma mater in January of 2013 when she was named Director of Sponsorships and Development for the UNLV Alumni Association. She has one son, Stephen, and has been married to former UNLV coach and local high school teacher and coach Greg Murphy since 1990.

hall of fame HALL HALL OF OF FAME FAME HALL OF FAME

Class of 2012

Seven different Rebel sports were represented during ceremonies as the UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2012 was honored Oct. 12, 2012. Six former Rebel standout players, one head coach and a distinguished contributor joined one team in being inducted the night before the Battle for the Fremont Cannon football game between UNLV and Nevada, Reno. Also being honored that night was former Rebel football player and current TV personality, Kenny Mayne, who received the Silver Rebel Award Born in 1987, UNLV’s Athletics Hall of Fame has now grown to 114 members strong. Under the hall’s bylaws, former student-athletes must have completed their eligibility at least 10 years earlier to be selected. Coaches and administrators must have stopped working at the University five years previous. All classes now enter on a biennial basis.

FRED ALBRECHT (1974-83, 1995, 2003) The winningest coach in UNLV tennis history, led the Rebel netters and compiled a record of 230-80 for a winning percentage of .742. A longtime administrator on campus, Albrecht was called upon to serve as Interim Athletics Director in both 1995 and 2003 during searches for permanent replacements. He retired from UNLV in 2007 after 38 years with a final title of vice president for university and community relations. LORENA DIACONESCU (1998-02) is arguably the Rebels women’s swimming program’s most decorated athlete. She won three consecutive Conference Swimmer of the Year awards from 2000-02 while setting school records in six separate events. Diaconescu earned All-America in 2000 and was honorable mention one year later. Winner of eight MW individual crowns as well as seven relay titles, she was also a two-time Olympian for her home country of Romania. LINDA FROHLICH (1998-02) The highest-scoring basketball player in UNLV history – men’s or women’s – finished with 2,355 points and a 21.2 PPG average in her dominating hoops career. The native of Oldendorf, Germany, was named USBWA National Freshman of the Year in 1999, AP Honorable Mention All-America as a sophomore and junior and then Third Team as a senior. EDDIE OWENS (1973-77) Still the leading Runnin’ Rebel scorer in history, was the emerging program’s second All-American in men’s basketball when he was tabbed First Team by a pair of outlets as a junior in 1976. JACINT SIMON (1998-2002) turned in a career in the water that rivaled any in school history. The Mountain West Swimmer of the Year three consecutive seasons earned All-America honors at the 2000 NCAA Championships while also being honorable mention in two relays. His fourth All-America finish came in 2002. Simon won 10 conference championships as an individual and one on a relay team and swam for his home nation of Hungary in the 2000 Summer Olympics. AMIE STEWART (1992-95) was a dominant pitcher for dominant softball program in the mid-1990s. A second team All-America selection as a senior in 1995, her 30-9 mark is still the school record for wins a season. She led her team all the way to the Women’s College World Series and tossed two complete games while finishing with a .95 ERA en route to becoming the only Rebel to be named to a WCWS All-Tournament Team. KEVIN THOMAS (1998-01) Arguably the top cornerback in school history, still holds numerous school and conference defensive records. The first player in school history to start 46 games, Thomas was the first defensive player from UNLV to earn All-America status in 26 years when he was named Third Team by Football News and Fourth Team by Sporting News. The 1984 UNLV FOOTBALL TEAM was the first of two in school history to win a conference championship and its 11-2 overall record included a victory over Toledo in the California Bowl. Going undefeated in the PCAA, the talent-rich squad featured the conference Offensive Player of the Year in All-America punter/quarterback Randall Cunningham; the Defensive Player of the Year in lineman Aaron Moog; and the Coach of the Year in Harvey Hyde. DISTINGUISHED CONTRIBUTOR MIKE MILLER is noted Las Vegas artist and illustrator. During the 1980s, Miller created and named the cartoon man with the long moustache known as “Hey Reb.” Miller was paid a single dollar for his work, which eventually helped UNLV vault to the top spot in college apparel licensing.
