BUCHANAN NATATORIUM
Named after former Nevada System Board of Regent James L. “Bucky” Buchanan II in 1980, the Buchanan Natatorium was officially dedicated on June 12, 1981. The former regent was an avid swimmer and supporter of UNLV athletics until his passing in the fall of 2009. Buchanan Natatorium has hosted host several major meets. The Western Athletic and West Coast conferences held their annual championships at the facility in the past. In addition, the swimming portion of the US Olympic Sports Festival brought the likes of Olympic Gold Medalists Matt Biondi, Janet Evans and Pablo Morales to the Buchanan Natatorium in 1987. In 1999 at the 15th annual Winter Invite, Natalie Coughlin broke an American record in the 100 back. In the fall of 2013, the UNLV Fall Invitational was held that featured several Olympians including USA’s Missy Franklin. The Big West Conference (then known as the Pacific Coast Athletic Association) held its annual men’s and women’s championships at the pool in 1985, and the women’s meet only in 1984 and ’86. The UNLV men’s water polo team, coached by Wes Mock, called the pool home from 1976-80. The natatorium is located adjacent to the men’s and women’s locker rooms within the Paul D. McDermott Physical Education Complex on the UNLV campus.

BUCHANAN NATATORIUM
Originally dubbed the UNLV Natatorium, the school’s swimming pool was built in 1974 and opened for use in 1975. The natatorium boasts a 50-meter indoor pool with two bulk heads, and has seating for 1,200. The pool has a 733,000-gallon capacity. A full record board was added to the walls of the facility for the 2006-07 season, while a new timing system and results scoreboard was installed prior to the start of the 2007-08 season. Following the end of the 2008-09 season, the natatorium underwent a complete and total renovation from the walls in. The renovation, which was completed in December of 2009, included the following • New pool • New pool deck • New diving boards • New bulkhead • New drainage and plumbing system Other changes made to the facility included changing the pool itself from aluminium to concrete, and the shallow end was changed from four feet to eight feet deep, giving the option to use both ends of the pool for competition at the same time.

HEAD COACH JIM REITZ 35TH SEASON WASHINGTON ‘75 As Jim Reitz enters his 35th season as head coach of the UNLV swimming program, he shows no signs of slowing down in his goal to keep the Rebels recognized as one of the most prominent programs in the nation. The past 10 years in fact have seen the most successful stretch in the history of the Rebel swimming and diving program. That includes 26 All-America performances as well as a record-run of conference championships. Reitz led the UNLV men’s squad to a conference-record seven straight MW championships, which were also the first seven in school history for the men’s program. Reitz also guided the UNLV women to the 2005 MW crown to give the Rebels a sweep of the league titles that season. It was the fourth all-time conference championship for the women, as they won the Big West in 1984, 1991 and 1992. The Rebels were also runners-up on the women’s side in the MW championship in 2008 and 2009. The men’s conference championship streak was just narrowly snapped in 2011-12, when they placed second in the MPSF Championship meet in their first year in the league. They bounced back to win the league title in 2012-13 in a meet that wasn’t decided until the final race. They followed that up with a another conference title in 2014, this time in the WAC. That gave the team championship titles in three leagues over a four-year span. UNLV posted one of its two best-ever performances at the NCAA Championships in the 2013-14 season after scoring in a record three events on the first day. The Rebels finished the meet in 19th place, tied for the best finish in team history, while four relays earned top-16 honors, includ-
4
ing a sixth-place showing by the 200 free relay. Dillon Virva would earn individual All-America honors (honorable mention) in the 50 free as well. The 19th-place finish was the sixth top-30 finish in that decade stretch, and Reitz was named WAC Men’s Coach of the Year as well. After a one-year absence, the 2013-14 season saw UNLV make a return to the NCAA championships in the scoring column. Balint Batka (14th, 200 fly) and David Szele (15th, 100 breast) both earned honorable mention All-America status, and the Rebels’ 400 medley relay also scored with a 12th-place finish. Reitz was named the MPSF Men’s Coach of the Year as well. 2011-12 saw both teams post success during the season, as the men’s squad was ranked in the top 25 for the entire season. UNLV’s women, meanwhile, scored at the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2009, with Rachel Dixon (50 free) and Katelyne Herrington (100 fly) both recording 15th-place swims to earn honorable mention All-America. The 2010-11 season was by far the best year ever for the Rebel men, as the team finished the regular season ranked 16th in the nation and claimed the first-ever top-20 finish at the NCAA Championships, placing 19th with a school-record 57 points. Eight Rebels would score in the championships, highlighted by the team’s eighth-place swim in the 400 medley relay, which earned them All-America honors. Cody Roberts (14th, 100 fly) and Kier Maitland (12th, 1650 free) both scored in their events to earn honorable mention All-America. Roberts was also the star of the MW Championships, setting two new league marks on the way to earning MW Swimmer of the Year honors and leading UNLV to a seventh championship, 97.5 points ahead of second-place BYU. In the 2009-10 campaign, the team ranked in the top 25 for the entire season for the first time in school history and finished the season with the highest finish (at that time) at the NCAA Championships, a tie for 21st place. That was in big part due to the Rebels’ 200 medley relay, which became the first in school history with a top-eight finish (eighth), earning relay All-American honors. And for just the second time in school history, UNLV saw two of its swimmers score individual points, with Maitland (10th in the 1650 free) and Cody Roberts (15th in the 100 fly) both earning honorable mention All-America honors. The Rebels also cruised at the 2010 MW Championships with a 186.50-point win over the rest of the field. Maitland received his second-straight MWC Swimmer of the Year honor as well. At the 2009 championships, the UNLV men quickly took control from the start and never looked back on the way to a 273.5-point lead over Air Force for the largest win-margin in the 10-year history of the conference. Meanwhile, UNLV’s women came in a strong second, less than 60 points behind BYU. The Rebels set a total of 15 conference records en route to 20 total first-place finishes. UNLV would also score at the NCAA women’s championships for the first time since 2001, placing 37th thanks to an AllAmerica performance from Zsuzanna Jakabos, while the Rebel men earned a national ranking for the first time at the end of the season, and were a false start away from having their 200 free relay earn All-America status. UNLV would send a total of six men to the 2009 NCAA championships, and two on the women’s side. And for the second straight year, UNLV swept the Swimmer of the Year awards,
2014-15 2014 15 UNLV MEN’S & WOMEN’S SW SWIMMING & DIVING MEDIA GUIDE
JIM REITZ with Maitland claiming the men’s while Jakabos was honored on the women’s side. 2007-08 was just as impressive a season for the Rebels, as the UNLV men entered the league meet expecting to face a big fight in the quest to defend their title, but instead cruised to the championship with a 157.5-point margin over second place BYU. The UNLV women meanwhile earned a runner-up finish. Even more impressive, the teams combined to win 24 events, and set eight new conference records while posting 16 new UNLV marks. UNLV also swept the Swimmer of the Year and Senior Recognition awards. Following the meet, Kim Bonney represented the women’s team at the NCAA Championships, while UNLV sent five swimmers to the NCAA Men’s Championships. Reitz also saw two of his seniors from the 2007-08 squad swim for their respective country in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Jonas Andersson (Sweden) and Richard Hortness (Canada), while Rebel alum Joe Bartoch also competed for Canada. The 15-time conference Coach Of The Year (Big West, Mountain West, MPSF, WAC) has taken programs that were figuratively non-existent and built them into consistent winners. Surrounded by talented assistant coaches, Reitz and his staff are devoted to the goal of becoming a program that battles for a place in the top 25 on a yearly basis. He emphasizes consistency and intensity during training. Both the men’s and women’s programs have produced numerous All-Americans while rising to national prominence and consistently scoring at the NCAA Championships. In his 35 years at UNLV, Reitz has taken swimmers to the NCAA Men’s Championships 18 times. UNLV has sent swimmers to the women’s championships nine times, with its best finish coming in 1986 when Sally Fleisher earned All-America honors in the 50 free and scored in two more events to help UNLV place 24th with 34 points. In addition, Reitz has sent several swimmers to represent the U.S. National Team, as well as numerous Rebels that have gone on to swim for their native countries in the Olympic Games, World Championships, Pan Pacific Games and the World University Games. Reitz expects the same consistency and intensity from his students-athletes in the classroom as he does in the pool. Year-in and year-out, the Rebels have had the majority of their swimmers named to the academic all-conference teams. The Rebels have also earned national recognition for their academic standards, as Kim Bonney was a second team Academic All-American in 2007-08 while several more swimmers have earned CSCAA Academic All-Scholar Honors. A native of Seattle, Wash., Reitz coached 15 years before coming to UNLV. He coached at both Cascade and Seattle Swim clubs and was head of the physical education departments at Shorewood High School in Seattle. Reitz moved to Las Vegas in 1976 and began coaching the Sandpiper Swim Team before taking over the reigns of the Rebel programs in 1980. Reitz earned bachelor’s degrees in physical education and psychology from the University of Washington in 1975. He and his wife, Nina, have two children, Emily (33) and Ben (30).

ATHLETIC TRAINING
Providing the best possible preventative and rehabilitative care, the UNLV soccer athletic training staff is headed by Director of Athletic Training Kyle Wilson. The trainer for this year’s team is Bernie Chavies. Made possible by a generous gift of $1.5 million by Marilyn and Si Redd, the Lied Athletic complex’s athletic training facility incorporates the total scope of sports medicine over an 8,500-square-foot area. Aside from five staff offices, a rehabilitation room houses a dozen pieces of equipment including Cybex stationary bicycles, stair machines and treadmills, all under a natural skylight. The largest area features a dozen tables to offer student-athletes various treatments throughout the day. Taping, padding and bracing all take place in another all-inclusive room. Finally, an aquatic therapy room features three above-ground whirlpools surrounding a 10-feet deep pool for rehabilitative exercises. All of these features make it possible for UNLV student-athletes to rehabilitate injuries without ever needing to leave the confines of the Lied Athletic Complex. Other amenities include a physician’s office and exam room to provide daily medical service for student-athletes. A drug-testing facility also is part of the complex. This expedites medical care because the student-athletes’ health care is self-contained. Also, UNLV’s academic program and its student athletic training benefit from a sports medicine library, study room and conference facility. 2014-15 UNLV MEN’S & WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING MEDIA GUIDE

With its Performing Arts Center, the campus is the cultural hub of Southern Nevada. World-class orchestras and soloists, dance and theater arts combine to provide a broad selection of concerts and stage productions. The Barrick Lecture Series and several campus organizations bring noted speakers to the University, and local and visiting artists show their works in the Donna Beam Fine Art Gallery. UNLV has excellent athletic facilities as well, many open for student and public use. Opened in 1957 as the southern regional division of the University of Nevada with a total of 28 students, UNLV now is home to more than 27,000 students coming from every county in Nevada, all 50 U.S. states and 88 countries. Much of UNLV’s tremendous expansion is the result of support from the Nevada Legislature and the state’s taxpayers. Private donors have played an important role as well. These gifts support new facilities and programs and, most important, provide the scholarship incentives that bring Nevada’s best and brightest student scholars to campus. UNLV operates an on-campus Center for Business and Economic Research, Center for Economic Education, Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies (in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency), Desert Biology Research Center, Center for Survey Research, Nuclear Waste Transportation Research Center and other research and public-service centers. Offering 103 undergraduate programs and 123 graduate tracts, UNLV graduated a class of 5,500 last year. The University operates on a semester system and is a member of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the Council of Graduate Schools, the American Council of Education and the Western College Association. All of the University’s academic programs are fully accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, and many programs have received further accreditation from independent national accreditation bodies.

KUNZER-MURPHY Born and raised in Las Vegas, Tina KunzerMurphy has been a fixture in the Southern Nevada sports community for more than four decades. On July 1, 2013, she added another accomplishment to her long and varied career as she began serving as UNLV Interim Director of Athletics. The move marked two major milestones as Kunzer-Murphy became both the first woman and the first alum of the school to run the department. Just six months later, the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents removed the interim tag from Kunzer-Murphy’s title and approved a three-year contract for her to serve as the school’s permanent AD. “I want to thank the Board of Regents for the tremendous support that they’ve given to me and to UNLV Athletics,” Kunzer-Murphy said. “It’s an unbelievable and humbling opportunity to work on behalf of our 450 student-athletes and their talented head coaches. We have a lot of hard work ahead of us but it’s a great thing to wake up every morning knowing that you get a chance to make a real difference at your alma mater in your own hometown.” A graduate of Valley High School, KunzerMurphy first attended Southern Utah, where she lettered in swimming, before transferring to UNLV to compete in both tennis and volleyball at her hometown university. She earned her bachelor’s degree in physical education from the school in 1975. While pursuing a graduate degree she served as a tennis instructor and dance teacher at both UNLV and Clark County Community College (now CSN). Soon after earning her master’s in education in 1977, she was hired as head coach of the UNLV women’s tennis team as well as director of its cheerleading program. When the school dropped tennis for financial reasons in the early 1980s, she was thrust into a management role under then-athletics director Brad Rothermel, and eventually worked with the
football and basketball programs, among others, during the department’s wildly successful run through the PCAA/Big West Conference. Named UNLV’s Senior Women’s Administrator in 1981, Kunzer-Murphy oversaw the entire Lady Rebel athletic program, as well as various support groups such as the Rebel Football Foundation, the Rebel Golf Foundation and the Women’s Sports Foundation, which she helped create. In 1983, she was named an assistant athletics director and in 1987 was promoted to senior assistant AD. Kunzer-Murphy became senior associate AD at the University of Pacific in 1992 but then soon returned to town to work for the Las Vegas 51s and Thunder professional sports franchises as director of corporate sales and marketing. After UNLV moved to the Western Athletic Conference in 1996, Kunzer-Murphy was hired by the WAC to run its annual football championship game and men’s and women’s basketball championship events in Las Vegas. Kunzer-Murphy returned to campus in 1999 when she was selected by ESPN Regional Television (ERT) to run the newly formed ESPN Regional at UNLV office, which oversaw the athletic department’s corporate sales and broadcasting departments until 2005. From 2000-12, Kunzer-Murphy served as Executive Director of the Las Vegas Bowl, which ERT purchased. Under her leadership, the bowl game enjoyed six consecutive sellouts from 2006-11, record-high TV ratings and team payouts en route to elevating itself into the national college football landscape A 2007 inductee of the Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame, Kunzer-Murphy in 2010

In summer 2011 she was honored as Las Vegas’ Sportsperson of the Year as part of the annual “24-Hour Radiothon” staged by Lotus Broadcasting, which benefits The Caring Place, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to easing the journey of those affected by cancer. Kunzer-Murphy has been married to former UNLV coach and local high school teacher and coach Greg Murphy since 1990. She has one son, Stephen, who is married to Ginny Broffett. hall of fame HALL HALL OF OF FAME FAME HALL OF FAME
Class of 2012
Seven different Rebel sports were represented during ceremonies as the UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2012 was honored Oct. 12, 2012. Six former Rebel standout players, one head coach and a distinguished contributor joined one team in being inducted the night before the Battle for the Fremont Cannon football game between UNLV and Nevada, Reno. Also being honored that night was former Rebel football player and current TV personality, Kenny Mayne, who received the Silver Rebel Award Born in 1987, UNLV’s Athletics Hall of Fame has now grown to 114 members strong. Under the hall’s bylaws, former student-athletes must have completed their eligibility at least 10 years earlier to be selected. Coaches and administrators must have stopped working at the University five years previous. All classes now enter on a biennial basis.
FRED ALBRECHT (1974-83, 1995, 2003) The winningest coach in UNLV tennis history, led the Rebel netters and compiled a record of 230-80 for a winning percentage of .742. A longtime administrator on campus, Albrecht was called upon to serve as Interim Athletics Director in both 1995 and 2003 during searches for permanent replacements. He retired from UNLV in 2007 after 38 years with a final title of vice president for university and community relations. LORENA DIACONESCU (1998-02) is arguably the Rebels women’s swimming program’s most decorated athlete. She won three consecutive Conference Swimmer of the Year awards from 2000-02 while setting school records in six separate events. Diaconescu earned All-America in 2000 and was honorable mention one year later. Winner of eight MW individual crowns as well as seven relay titles, she was also a two-time Olympian for her home country of Romania. LINDA FROHLICH (1998-02) The highest-scoring basketball player in UNLV history – men’s or women’s – finished with 2,355 points and a 21.2 PPG average in her dominating hoops career. The native of Oldendorf, Germany, was named USBWA National Freshman of the Year in 1999, AP Honorable Mention All-America as a sophomore and junior and then Third Team as a senior. EDDIE OWENS (1973-77) Still the leading Runnin’ Rebel scorer in history, was the emerging program’s second All-American in men’s basketball when he was tabbed First Team by a pair of outlets as a junior in 1976. JACINT SIMON (1998-2002) turned in a career in the water that rivaled any in school history. The Mountain West Swimmer of the Year three consecutive seasons earned All-America honors at the 2000 NCAA Championships while also being honorable mention in two relays. His fourth All-America finish came in 2002. Simon won 10 conference championships as an individual and one on a relay team and swam for his home nation of Hungary in the 2000 Summer Olympics. AMIE STEWART (1992-95) was a dominant pitcher for dominant softball program in the mid-1990s. A second team All-America selection as a senior in 1995, her 30-9 mark is still the school record for wins a season. She led her team all the way to the Women’s College World Series and tossed two complete games while finishing with a .95 ERA en route to becoming the only Rebel to be named to a WCWS All-Tournament Team. KEVIN THOMAS (1998-01) Arguably the top cornerback in school history, still holds numerous school and conference defensive records. The first player in school history to start 46 games, Thomas was the first defensive player from UNLV to earn All-America status in 26 years when he was named Third Team by Football News and Fourth Team by Sporting News. The 1984 UNLV FOOTBALL TEAM was the first of two in school history to win a conference championship and its 11-2 overall record included a victory over Toledo in the California Bowl. Going undefeated in the PCAA, the talent-rich squad featured the conference Offensive Player of the Year in All-America punter/quarterback Randall Cunningham; the Defensive Player of the Year in lineman Aaron Moog; and the Coach of the Year in Harvey Hyde.
