Vegas Kickoff HAPPY HOMECOMING After playing three consecutive away games, UNLV (1-5/0-2) finally returns to Las Vegas for tonight’s special Friday night Homecoming game vs. first-place Fresno State (3-3/2-0) ... The game will mark UNLV’s only appearance this season on CBS Sports Network ... UNLV is 23-23 all-time in Homecoming games ... This will be the program’s only home game in the month of October. In fact, UNLV has not had more than one home game in October since the 2010 season ... The Rebels are looking to snap a four-game losing streak after falling at San Jose State last Saturday while the Bulldogs bring in a three-game winning streak after downing San Diego State to remain unbeaten in MW play ... This will mark the second Friday game of the year for UNLV after also opening on the night in the opener at Arizona. In its 46year history, UNLV has played on Friday nine times and boasts a 6-2-1 mark in those games and a solid overall non-Saturday record of 15-12-1 ... UNLV rookie receiver Devonte Boyd (pictured) out of Henderson’s Basic HS currently ranks seventh in the nation among all freshmen with 357 receiving yards and third in yards per reception. His 17.85 yards per-catch average trails only Baylor’s KD Cannon (21.96) and Oregon’s Devon Allen (19.84) among newbies.
SERIES NOTES These programs have played each other as part of three different conferences (Big West, WAC and now MW) ... Despite meeting for 13 straight seasons from 1979-91, UNLV and FS have not squared off on the football field in Las Vegas since both were members of the WAC in 1996 ... FS leads the overall series 12-4 and has won 10 straight against UNLV ... The Rebels’ last victory over the Bulldogs came in 1984 when Randall Cunningham was under center ... FS offensive coordinator Dave Schramm worked under UNLV head coach Bobby Hauck while at Montana, serving as TE and OT coach as well as the recruiting coordinator from 2003-04 ... UNLV sophomore LB Matt Lea is a product of Central HS in Fresno ... Fresno State has one player from Las Vegas, redshirt freshman LB Robert Stanley out of Bishop Gorman HS.
STATES OF THE PROGRAM From Hawaii to Florida, from Canada to Finland -- the 2014 Rebels come from hometowns spread across the globe. In fact, no less than 14 different states, two countries and one U.S. territory (American Samoa) are represented on this year’s roster. While a vast majority of Rebels naturally hail from California and Nevada, a state that continues to become even more fertile recruiting ground is Texas as currently 10 UNLV players are products of the Lone Star State. Meanwhile, nearby Arizona is home to no less than six current Rebels -- Florida, Maryland, New York, Oregon, South Carolina, Utah, Vermont and Washington are each represented. Las Vegas, of course, is nicknamed the “Ninth Island” by Hawaiians, which is one reason six players from that state are on this season’s roste

BOYKO’S THE TOP PROSPECT (EH)
UNLV senior offensive lineman Brett Boyko on Sept. 14 was named the No. 1 eligible prospect for the 2015 Canadian Football League Draft in the league’s official September rankings. Boyko, a four-year starter at left tackle from Saskatoon, Sask., was a unanimous 2014 preseason All-Mountain West Conference selection and a member of the Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List. He was also listed among the Top-10 NFL Talent in the league and “Best Pass Blocker” by Lindy’s magazine. After joining the Rebels in 2010, he converted to the offensive line after having played quarterback and defensive line for St. Joseph’s High School. The 2015 CFL Combine will be held in Toronto from March 27-29. The date of the 2015 CFL Draft has yet to be confirmed. The CFL Scouting Bureau releases its rankings three times each year: in September, January and April. The CFL’s Scouting Bureau is comprised of CFL scouts, player personnel directors and general managers from the league’s nine teams.
When UNLV took its opening drive down field for a touchdown at SJSU last week, it marked the fifth time in six games this season that the Rebels scored on their opening drive (3 TDs and 2 field goals). 2014 U NLV F OOT BAL L GAM E T IM E

HEAD COACH BOBBY HAUCK
B
obby Hauck, who was the winningest coach in Division I FCS, was hired as the 10th head coach in Rebel football history on Dec. 23, 2009, and immediately charged with spreading an attitude of success and discipline throughout a program thirsting for prosperity. Hauck (pronounced HOWK) immediately got to work building the UNLV program and guided his new school through some of its toughest schedules in history. After UNLV posted three two-win campaigns, all of Hauck & Co.’s hard work in Las Vegas last year produced a team that won more games than those first three seasons combined. In fact, the 2013 Rebels won five games in the Mountain West Conference for the first time ever, hit the seven-victory mark for only the third time since 1984 and appeared in the postseason for the first time since 2000 when they played on New Year’s Day in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. For his efforts, Hauck was rewarded by the school with a new, three-year contract through the 2016 season. Before coming to the desert, Hauck had spent the previous seven seasons as the record-setting head coach of the University of Montana where he compiled an overall record of 80-17, including leading the Grizzlies to three national championship games in the NCAA’s Football Championship Bobby Subdivision (formerly I-AA). The winningest coach in Big Sky Conference history (both in average victories per year and overall titles), Hauck earned at least a share of the league’s crown all seven years at Montana en route to compiling a record of 47-6. The more-recent numbers were even more impressive as his records over his last four seasons were 51-6 overall and 31-1 in conference play. Hauck, 50, was named Big Sky Coach of the Year in 2006, 2007 and 2009 and AFCA Regional FCS Coach of the Year in 2006 and 2009. A veteran of eight bowl games, he also brought with him tremendous FBS experience from stints coaching in both the Pac-10 and Big 12 conferences.W “The future of Rebel Football is bright,” Hauck said. “I’m excited to be a part of the process building UNLV Football into a winner. I enjoy working every day with this group of players and coaches, as well as our administration.” Hauck immediately caught the attention of his new community when he announced a 2010 recruiting class that included the most Southern Nevada signees (eight) in program history. The overall group boasted 10 players
who were assigned at least three stars by either Scout, Rivals or Scouts, Inc., which was also the most on record for the Rebels. Hauck was the youngest head coach in modern Montana history when he was named to the post in 2002, and record-setting success soon followed as he compiled four more conference championships than anyone in Grizzly history. His 2009 team finished 14-1 and reached the FCS Championship game for the second consecutive season. In 2007, the Grizzlies went 11-0 during the regular season, marking the first undefeated run for the proud program since 1996. Hauck produced 24 FCS All-Americans during his time in Missoula as well as six NFL Draft picks, including four in his last three years. Prior to taking over his alma mater, he spent four years at the University of Washington (1999-2002) where he coached defensive backs and special teams and was considered one of the top recruiters in college football as the Huskies went to a bowl game each season. Before that he was at the University of Colorado for four seasons (1995-98) where he was the special teams and recruiting coordinator while also coaching the safeties. Prior to joining the Buffaloes, Hauck coached the outside linebackers and handled recruiting duties for Northern Arizona University (1993Hauck 94). He served as a graduate assistant at UCLA in 1990-91 under Terry Donahue and in 1992 served as the Bruins’ on-campus recruiting coordinator. Hauck began his collegiate coaching career as a volunteer assistant for Montana in 1988-89, working with the secondary and then the inside linebackers. A native of the Treasure State, Hauck was a three-sport star at Sweet Grass High School in Big Timber, Mont., and went on to twice letter in track and field at the University of Montana. His first coaching position was in 1987 as an assistant at his prep alma mater. Hauck earned bachelor’s degrees in business and physical education from Montana in 1987 and a master’s in education administration from UCLA in 1991. He and his wife, Stacey, have four children: daughters Sydney, Alexandra and Elise and son, Robby. His late father, Robert Hauck Sr., coached high school football in the state of Montana for three decades and his brother, Tim Hauck, played 13 seasons as a defensive back in the NFL and joined UNLV as defensive coordinator in 2013 after spending the previous year on the coaching staff of the Cleveland Browns. 2014 U NLV F OOT BAL L GAM E T IM E

UNLV ATHLETICS DIRECTOR
Tina Kunzer-Murphy
B
orn and raised in Las Vegas, Tina Kunzer-Murphy has been a fixture in the Southern Nevada sports community for more than four decades. On July 1, 2013, she added another accomplishment to her long and varied career as she began serving as UNLV Interim Director of Athletics. The move marked two major milestones as Kunzer-Murphy became both the first woman and the first alum of the school to run the department. Just six months later, the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents removed the interim tag from Kunzer-Murphy’s title and approved a three-year contract for her to serve as the school’s permanent AD. “I want to thank the Board of Regents for the tremendous support that they’ve given to me and to UNLV Athletics,” Kunzer-Murphy said. “It’s an unbelievable and humbling opportunity to work on behalf of our 450 studentathletes and their talented head coaches. It’s a great thing to wake up every morning knowing that you get a chance to make a real difference at your alma mater in your own hometown.” A graduate of Valley High School, Kunzer-Murphy first attended Southern Utah, where she lettered in swimming, before transferring to UNLV to compete in both tennis and volleyball at her hometown university. She earned her bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1975.
While pursuing a graduate degree she served as a tennis instructor and dance teacher at both UNLV and Clark County Community College (now CSN). Soon after earning her master’s in education in 1977, she was hired as head coach of the UNLV women’s tennis team as well as director of its cheerleading program. When the school dropped tennis for financial reasons in the early 1980s, she was thrust into a management role under then-athletics director Brad Rothermel, and eventually worked with the football and basketball programs, among others, during the department’s wildly successful run through the PCAA/Big West Conference. Named UNLV’s Senior Women’s Administrator in 1981, Kunzer-Murphy oversaw the entire Lady Rebel athletic program. In 1983, she was named an assistant athletics director and in 1987 was promoted to senior assistant AD. Kunzer-Murphy became senior associate AD at the University of Pacific in 1992 but then soon returned to town to work for the Las Vegas 51s and Thunder professional sports franchises as director of corporate sales and marketing. After UNLV moved to the Western Athletic Conference in 1996, Kunzer-Murphy was hired by the WAC to run its annual football championship game and men’s and women’s basketball championship events in Las Vegas. Kunzer-Murphy returned to campus in 1999 when she was selected by ESPN Regional Television (ERT) to run the newly formed ESPN Regional at UNLV office, which oversaw the athletic department’s corporate sales and broadcasting departments until 2005. From 2000-12, Kunzer-Murphy served as Executive Director of the Las Vegas Bowl, which ERT purchased. Under her leadership, the bowl game enjoyed six consecutive sellouts from 2006-11, record-high TV ratings and team payouts en route to elevating itself into the national college football landscape A 2007 inductee of the Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame, Kunzer-Murphy in 2010 became the first woman to serve as Chairman of the Football Bowl Association. In summer 2011 she was honored as Las Vegas’ Sportsperson of the Year as part of the annual “24-Hour Radiothon” staged by Lotus Broadcasting, which benefits The Caring Place, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to easing the journey of those affected by cancer. Kunzer-Murphy has been married to former UNLV coach and local high school teacher and coach Greg Murphy since 1990. She has one son, Stephen, who is married to Ginny Broffett and the couple is expecting the arrival of the newest little Rebel in late September.

SAM BOYD STADIUM
S
tanding as one of the top college football facilities in all the West is UNLV’s versatile venue Sam Boyd Stadium. Undergoing a complete facelift and renovation during 1999, Sam Boyd expanded to its present capacity of 36,800 (with the ability to seat more than 40,000 when called for). Located in Las Vegas approximately seven miles from both the UNLV campus and McCarran International Airport, Sam Boyd Stadium successfully combines the excitement of a college football stadium and the versatility of an entertainment arena. The Rebel football team has posted a 143-117-3 record in 42-plus seasons playing there, including in front of a record three sellout crowds in 2007. SBS marked its 25th anniversary in 1996 by hosting the state’s then-largest-ever sporting crowd on Sept. 14 when 41,091 fans witnessed UNLV take on Wisconsin. That total was surpassed just three months later when 41,238 saw BYU get past Wyoming in the first WAC Championship game. That record was re-written once more when 42,075 fans saw the Badgers return to face the Rebels on Aug. 31, 2002. The 2006 Las Vegas Bowl ultimately upped the record to 44,615 in a game between BYU and Oregon. The stadium has hosted some of the greatest talents in sports and show business. Future NFL quarterbacks Randall Cunningham, Jim McMahon, Drew Bledsoe, Carson Palmer, Andre Ware, Alex Smith, John Beck, Andy Dalton, Colin Kaepernick and Kellen Moore are among those who have played at Sam Boyd Stadium along with events involving athletes such as soccer legend Pele and motor sports stars. Additionally, the stadium has hosted world-class concerts by such musical acts as the Dave Matthews Band, the Eagles, U2, Paul McCartney, Wayne Newton, and the once-annual summer appearances by the Grateful Dead. A mecca for football played on all levels, the stadium is currently site of the Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl each December, including seven sold-out crowds in the last nine years, after serving as home to three Western Athletic Conference
championship games from 1996-98. The facility has served as host to professional football three times, including housing the two-time United Football League champion Las Vegas Locomotives in 200910. The Las Vegas Outlaws of the XFL made it their home in 2001; and the Las Vegas Posse, a Canadian Football League franchise, played one season in 1994. SBS also hosts high school games and has been site of the state’s prep championship. The venue also hosted two other college football events: the Silver Dollar Classic, which featured teams from historically black universities, and the Las Vegas AllAmerican Classic all-star game from 2003-05. Originally named Las Vegas Stadium when it was built in 1971 at a cost of $3.5 million, the facility was re-named the Las Vegas Silver Bowl in 1978 and then known as the Sam Boyd Silver Bowl in honor of local gaming pioneer Sam Boyd beginning in 1984. Its name was officially shortened to Sam Boyd Stadium in April 1994. The first event held in the then-15,000-seat stadium was a UNLV football game against Weber State on Oct. 23, 1971, won by the visiting Wildcats, 30-17. Official dedication ceremonies, however, took place the next season on Sept. 9, 1972, at halftime of a 35-28 loss to Western Illinois before 8,800 fans. SBS, which has always retained its horseshoe shape, underwent an expansion to 32,000 seats in 1978 and again enjoyed improvements in 1994. The Rebel Experience area outside the stadium opened in 1997. One of the highlights of the most recent renovation was the replacement of the so-called “Magic Carpet” retractable artificial turf that had been in place since 1985. Originally fitted with traditional AstroTurf, Sam Boyd was the first stadium in the world to install a Monsanto Corp. outdoor retractable turf, which helped give the facility its multi-purpose capability. The surface, which simply rolled up into cylinders in less than an hour, was installed at a cost of $1.2 million in part through a grant by the Sam Boyd family. Natural grass replaced the artificial turf from 1999-2002 before a synthetic surface, made by TurfTech, was installed in 2003. 2014 U NLV F OOT BAL L GAM E T IM E

REBELS WITH APPLAUSE BARNHILL IS MR. VERSATILE FOR REBELS By W.G. Ramirez for Game Time
T
aylor Barnhill came to UNLV after starring as a quarterback at Northwest High School in Justin, Texas. As a collegian, however, he’s played all over the field on offense and even spent a spring on the other side of the ball learning the linebacker position. As a senior leader and one of six full-time team captains, Barnhill is spending 2014 primarily as a tight end for the Rebels but also lines up on kickoff return and punt teams. And according to the three-time Academic allMountain West honoree, he’s just fine with that. “I came into UNLV thinking ‘I’m going to do whatever it takes to get on the field and whatever the coaches need me to do.’ So I took that mindset, and when they asked me to start switching positions, from quarterback to H, from H to linebacker and then back to tight end, I just took that as a challenge to myself to say ‘I don’t have a spot here at quarterback but I can have a spot at something else,’” Barnhill said. “As a kid growing up, even through high school, I tried to play as many positions as I could, just because I love football and I love to hit. I just tried to have some versatility coming into college.” It’s certainly shown, as the 6-foot-4, 240-pounder earned his first letter as a Rebel by playing in seven games on offense and on special teams in 2011 -- starting two at quarterback, including one back in his home state against TCU. He appeared headed to the defensive unit in 2012, but switched back to offense from his linebacker spot during the preseason, and went on to start seven games at tight end/H-back. He even got national recognition when a remarkable touchdown reception at Louisiana Tech was recognized as the nation’s top play and qualified it as one of eight finalists for GEICO Play of the Year. His head coach certainly appreciates Barnhill’s versatility, attitude and heart. “We expect a lot of out Taylor,” said Bobby Hauck. “He is a hard-working, passionate football player who leaves everything he has out on the field.” Last season Barnhill played in every game and started six as he caught a career-high 21 passes for 131 yards during the Rebels’ run to the postseason. “I worked hard,” he said. “Physically, the changes were different from quarterback because you go from barely getting hit in practice to hitting every single time. In the games you turn the physicality level up. It’s been a fun ride how I got here, and now I really enjoy playing tight end.” Heading into tonight’s Homecoming matchup with Fresno State, Barnhill has started four games and caught eight passes for 87 yards, including hauling in a team-leading three grabs last week at San Jose State.
But he’s not worried about his personal numbers, as his task is more about keeping the Rebels focused as they try to close the season strong after a disappointing start. “Last year we really established a winning culture and a competitive culture and a never-say-die attitude,” he said. “It’s carried over to this year. We haven’t had the breaks yet. We’re still doing the same stuff we did last year. We’re working just as hard. We lost a few guys from last year, but we have the tools to be successful and I believe we will be successful.” As one of the team captains, Barnhill said he saves his rah-rah mode for the field, and tries to lead his teammates by example, whether it’s laying solid blocks off the line, protecting the quarterback or making a key play on third-and-short. “I’m not a huge talker, I think talk is cheap,” Barnhill said. “I try to lead by example and do the right thing every chance I get, and hopefully the young guys see me and follow me.”

His Major League Baseball broadcasting experience includes more than 40 games for the Baltimore Orioles, Chicago White Sox and Montreal Expos. Langer has also broadcast high school football in four different states over the last two decades.
MIKE PRITCHARD
Radio Game Analyst
Las Vegas native and former NFL star Mike Pritchard joined the UNLV broadcasting team in 2006 as radio analyst for Rebel football. After a stellar career as a running back at Las Vegas’ Rancho High School, Pritchard went on to the University of Colorado (1987-90) where he would become the second-leading receiver in school history with 1,241 yards. His college career included being named team MVP during the Buffaloes’ 1990 National Championship season. Pritchard was the 13th overall selection by the Atlanta Falcons in the 1991 NFL Draft and became one of five players in league history to catch more than 200 passes in his first three seasons. He played nine years in the NFL: three with the Falcons, two with the Broncos and four with the Seahawks. Pritchard was inducted into the Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame in June 2007.
DICK CALVERT
Voice of the Rebels Gameday Announcer
A familiar sound to UNLV fans of all ages, Dick Calvert, the “Voice of the Rebels,” is in his fifth decade as the game announcer for UNLV Athletics. Calvert, who calls UNLV football, basketball, men’s & women’s soccer, baseball games and other events at Sam Boyd Stadium, Thomas & Mack Center, Cox Pavilion, Peter Johann Memorial Field, and Earl E. Wilson Stadium, has also served as the game announcer of the MWC basketball tournament, the Las Vegas Bowl and the NBA Vegas Summer League. He was inducted into the Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame in June 2010. Calvert and his wife Anne have four adult children and are the proud grandparents of 10 and great-grandparents of three.
RADIO HOME OF THE REBELS
All 13 UNLV football games in 2014 can be heard on Rebel flagship station ESPN 1100 AM (KWWN) and 98.9 FM. Russ Langer and Mike Pritchard will again bring Rebel fans all of the action as part of a continuing partnership with Lotus Broadcasting. Games begin each week with a full half-hour of pre-game analysis and features. Lotus Broadcasting is also home to the football coach’s radio show, which will air twice each Wednesday, unless otherwise announced, during the season. For the fourth straight year, the show will originate from Born And Raised Tavern & Lounge (7260 S. Cimarron Road, Las Vegas) -- the Official Home of the Rebels on the Road. This fall, the show will be broadcast live from Noon-1 p.m. on Sports 920 AM before being replayed from 6-7 p.m. that same night on both ESPN 1100 AM and 98.9 FM.
In 2013, KVVU FOX5 became the new home of the official UNLV television coach’s show. The all-new “Reb Zone Sports Show” airs Sunday nights at 11 pm exclusively on FOX5 following FOX5 News at 10p Weekend Edition and FOX5 SportsPlus. Each week, FOX5 Sports Director Kevin Bolinger and UNLV Head Football Coach Bobby Hauck break down post-game highlights, feature player profiles, preview of the next opponent and give a weekly wrap of Mountain West Conference play. UNLV men’s basketball head coach Dave Rice will join Bolinger in the Reb Zone during the Runnin’ Rebels’ season. “FOX5 is a big supporter of UNLV academics and athletics and we are excited about this partnership,” said Vice President and KVVU FOX5 General Manager, Todd Brown. “We are all about community and there is nothing better than a community that supports their college students and studentathletes.” 2014 U NLV F OOT BAL L GAM E T IM E
