Peter JOHANN MEMORIAL FIELD The dedication of Peter Johann Memorial Soccer Field during the 1983 season marked a special occasion for all those who were involved with the building of UNLV’s first on-campus soccer facility. Despite the fact that UNLV soccer has been around since 1974, Rebel teams in the past never truly had a “home field” to call their own. And, when former men’s soccer head coach Barry Barto assumed his position prior to the 1982 season, building an on-campus soccer field became a priority. Barto approached then-athletics director Brad Rothermel to work out a solution to the problem and the two settled on the current location, where the old softball field had previously existed. Once the site was finalized, a huge community effort was instrumental in the building of the soccer field. The field is named after the late son of Kenneth F. Johann, a real estate businessman who has lived in Las Vegas for more than 50 years. Johann has been 4
a strong supporter of Rebel soccer and he and his wife, Alice, set up a scholarship fund in memory of their son. Thus, Johann was more than happy to be a part of the overall community effort. Johann Field played host to the 1983 ISAA Senior Bowl All-Star Game where the West team posted a 4-0 victory. Numerous international matches have also

The facility has also played host to three Las Vegas Soccer Spectaculars. The inaugural contest in 2002 featured the WUSA’s San Jose CyberRays and the San Diego Spirit, while in the spring of 2003, the Boston Breakers took on San Jose. The final spectacular was in March of 2003, between UNLV and the Mexican Olympic Team, who had just claimed a spot in the 2004 Athens Games. In the spring of 2007, a sellout crowd watched the first-ever MLS contest on the UNLV campus, The Rebel Alumni Park, dedicated in 2002, was made possible as Real Salt Lake and the Colorado by the efforts of alumni and friends of the Rebel soccer program. Rapids played to a 0-0 draw in an exhibition contest on March 31. In 2012, the UNLV men’s soccer team posted its 150th victory at the site, achieving the milestone in the final home game of the year. The Rebels eclipsed the century mark in 174 games over 16 years. With the addition of endzone seats in 1997, the grandstands now offer seating for approximately 2,500 spectators in an open seating arrangement, and the facility boasts natural grass, a press box, and lights for night matches. The facility was upgraded during the summer of 2006, as a $300,000 renovation led to a new irrigation system as well as new sod and grass for the field. The 2014 season saw an addition of 90 feet long shade structures on the North side to further enhance the fan experience, while parking was expanded as well with an extra 125 spaces. Generally regarded as one of the top college soccer facilities in the West, Johann Field celebrates its 33rd season in 2015.

Scholarship/Support Staff 2014 WAC CHAMPIONS The 2015 UNLV men’s soccer season marks the 41st year in which the Peter Johann Memorial Scholarship will benefit a Las Vegas native on the team. Freshman midfielder Tony Murillo of Las Vegas is this year’s scholarship recipient. He is the son of Jesus and Teresa Espinoza. Since 1974, the UNLV men’s soccer program has been fortunate to have the support of Las Vegas businessman Ken Johann and his wife, Alice. It was that fall in 1974 when the Johanns’ son, Peter, died in a sporting accident. The next fall, the Johanns decided to honor their late son with a memorial scholarship. Established in 1975, the Peter Johann Memorial Scholarship assists one deserving student-athlete in attending classes at UNLV while participating in intercollegiate soccer. The scholarship is awarded to the student-athlete each season who demonstrates excellence in six areas: academic performance, techniques and tactics of soccer, team loyalty, cooperation, leadership and endurance. In return for their generosity, UNLV’s first-ever on-campus soccer field was dedicated to the memory of Peter Johann when it was built on the north side of the campus in 1983. The Rebels have called Peter Johann Memorial Field home for the past 32 years.

head coach 2014 WAC CHAMPIONS
Rich Ryerson head coach SIXTH season unlv ‘87 After five years at the helm, Rich Ryerson has completed the turnaround of the UNLV men’s soccer program that he knew was possible as he led the Rebels to their best season in 24 years in 2014. The accomplishments were almost too many to list as UNLV swept the Western Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles while earning a trip to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1988. UNLV won its first five games of the year while knocking off 14th-ranked UMBC, and would earn its first national ranking since 1992 at 23rd by Soccer America. A school-record five players were named to the all-region team, while Ryerson saw one of his first-ever recruits, Salvador Bernal, became the third All-American in team history and get drafted by Toronto FC in the MLS following the season. Thanks to the overwhelming success of the season, Ryerson picked up both conference and regional Coach of the Year honors. Ryerson was named the fifth head in program history on April 7, 2010, taking over the helm of the program after spending the previous two years as an assistant coach under former Rebel coach Mario Sanchez. “It was a dream come true, to become head coach at my alma mater,” said Ryerson. “UNLV has made such a big impact on my life, it’s been the foundation for everything I’ve accomplished and experienced in the sport of soccer.” In his first year as the Rebels’ head coach, Ryerson took a team that had 11 newcomers and coached it to a 6-11-2 mark. Seven of the 11 losses were by one goal, and UNLV pulled off several impressive victories, including a win at Stanford and both a win and tie against MPSF Mountain champion Denver. The Rebels struggled with injuries in 2011, but one big highlight was unheralded recruit Salvador Bernal of Las Vegas, a member of Ryerson’ first recruiting class who became the second player in team history to be named MPSF Newcomer of the Year. In Ryerson’s third season, the Rebels pulled off several noteworthy outings, including home victories over Cal State Northridge and Air Force, both eventual NCAA Tournament squads. This past season, the Rebels earned their first conference winning season since 2002 at 5-4-1, while posting an overall record of 7-10-2. Just as important as the coaching aspect of the job is Ryerson’s fundraising accomplishments. In the summer of 2011 he was able to help UNLV secure an $850,000 donation from the Englestad foundation, as well as other donations to help ensure the stability of the men’s program at UNLV for the next five years. Most recently, former men’s coach Barry Barto led the effort (with assistance from Ryerson) to secure a one million dollar donation from the Hannah family in 2013. That brought the soccer specific fundraising total under to two million in a four year period. One of four Ryerson brothers to play for the Rebels (Rob, Kenny, Tim), Rich Ryerson was a four-year starting defender/midfielder for the Rebels from 1983-86 and led UNLV to three NCAA tournament appearances and three straight conference championships during his first time
14
in Las Vegas. In his junior season, the Rebels posted a program-best 18-2-2 mark and No. 4 final national ranking, and that 1985 squad was inducted into the UNLV Athletic Hall of Fame on Oct. 1, 2010. A two-time all-region and all-conference selection, Ryerson scored 20 goals and had 20 assists. Ryerson started all 84 games during his time as a Rebel and still holds school records for both most career games played and most career starts. Ryerson was also named one of Soccer America’s Top-10 Freshmen of the Year in 1983. Ryerson graduated from UNLV in 1987 with a bachelor’s of science degree in business administration. He went on to play a total of 10 years in several professional soccer leagues, including two in Kinna, Sweden, and finished his career in 1998 with the Baton Rouge Bombers of the Eastern Indoor Soccer League, where he was named the EISL’s Defensive Player of the Year. Beginning in 1994, Ryerson served as athletic director and physical education teacher for the Marywood-Palm Valley School, a K-12 program in Rancho Mirage, Calif., and he held that position until 2006 when he moved back to Las Vegas. He served as Director of Coaching for the Downtown Las Vegas Soccer Club for two years but stepped down from that position after accepting the Rebels’ head job. In 2010, Ryerson was the Nevada State Vice President for US Youth Soccer before changing positions to Director of Coaching for the association after taking over at UNLV. A native of Maryland, Ryerson was inducted into that state’s Soccer Hall of Fame on May 11, 2012.

the western athletic conference 2014 WAC CHAMPIONS
After completing its 53rd year of intercollegiate competition, the Western Athletic Conference continues to evolve and feature some of the nation’s best programs. One thing that remains unchanged is the persistent nature of the schools in the WAC to advance their programs to contend at the top levels of the NCAA. The WAC provides its student-athletes the chance to travel to scenic destinations and gain exposure in some of the nation’s most diverse markets and largest metropolitan cities. In addition, the WAC’s studentathletes work to achieve the highest levels of success with the academic support of their respective institutions. The WAC has experienced tremendous success over the years. In men’s basketball, the WAC has sent at least two teams to the NCAA Tournament in 28 of the past 40 seasons. In baseball, the WAC has boasted two national champions since 2003. In women’s basketball, the conference has had at least two teams qualify for the NCAA Tournament 10 times in 23 seasons, with a record five teams in 1998. The WAC also sent teams to three BCS football bowl games from 2007-10. In 2014-15, the WAC debuted a new digital network to give fans high quality streaming internet access to many of its regular season games and postseason championships including volleyball, soccer, swimming and diving, basketball, softball and baseball. The WAC’s history traces back to July 27, 1962, when the original six-team league of Arizona, Arizona State, Brigham Young, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming began competition. The first championship was held in November 1962, when Arizona won the men’s cross country title and New Mexico followed with the first WAC football title. Arizona finished second in the NCAA College World Series and, less than three years later, Arizona State claimed the league’s first NCAA title when the Sun Devils won the College World Series trophy. Fresno State was the last WAC school to earn an NCAA team title when it won the College World Series in 2008. The WAC has had just six commissioners in its history. Paul Brechler was named the first leader of the conference and held the position from 1962-1968. He was followed by Wiles Hallock (1968-71), Stan Bates (1971-80), Dr. Joe Kearney (1980-94), Karl Benson (1994-2012) and current commissioner Jeff Hurd (2012-present). Presently, the WAC crowns team and individual champions in 19 sports – nine men’s and 10 women’s. For the men, there are championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. Championships for women are held in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and volleyball. The WAC office has been located in the Denver area since the conference’s inception with the exception of a two-year stay in Phoenix from 1964-66.

JEFF HURD COMMISSIONER
Jeff Hurd was named Commissioner of the WAC on June 14, 2013. He has been associated with the conference for more than half of its existence as he joined the WAC staff in 1985 as the Director of Conference Relations. Hurd, the sixth commissioner in the WAC’s 53-year history, has served in various capacities during his tenure. He was the Conference’s Senior Associate Commissioner prior to replacing former commissioner Karl Benson on an interim basis. Hurd is a graduate of the University of Missouri’s School of Journalism and began his professional career as the Sports Editor of the Hannibal (Missouri) Courier-Post. He also worked for the Tulsa Tribune, was the Sports Information Director at the University of Tulsa and the Director of Public Relations for the Missouri Valley Conference prior to joining the WAC. A native of Minot, North Dakota, Hurd and his wife, Cheri, reside in Centennial, Colo., and are the parents of four children: Shannon, Michael, Kristen and Kevin. .

With its Performing Arts Center, the campus is the cultural hub of Southern Nevada. World-class orchestras and soloists, dance and theater arts combine to provide a broad selection of concerts and stage productions. The Barrick Lecture Series and several campus organizations bring noted speakers to the University, and local and visiting artists show their works in the Donna Beam Fine Art Gallery. UNLV has excellent athletic facilities as well, many open for student and public use. Opened in 1957 as the southern regional division of the University of Nevada with a total of 28 students, UNLV now is home to more than 28,000 students coming from every county in Nevada, all 50 U.S. states and 88 countries. Much of UNLV’s tremendous expansion is the result of support from the Nevada Legislature and the state’s taxpayers. Private donors have played an important role as well. These gifts support new facilities and programs and, most important, provide the scholarship incentives that bring Nevada’s best and brightest student scholars to campus. UNLV operates an on-campus Center for Business and Economic Research, Center for Economic Education, Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies (in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency), Desert Biology Research Center, Center for Survey Research, Nuclear Waste Transportation Research Center and other research and public-service centers. Offering 103 undergraduate programs and 123 graduate tracts, UNLV graduated a class of 5,500 last year. The University operates on a semester system and is a member of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the Council of Graduate Schools, the American Council of Education and the Western College Association. All of the University’s academic programs are fully accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, and many programs have received further accreditation from independent national accreditation bodies.

PRESIDEnT PRESIDENT PRESIDENT PRESIDENT
dr. len
JESSUP
Len Jessup joined UNLV as its 10th president in January 2015. An accomplished leader in higher education, Jessup brings experience as a university professor, administrator, entrepreneur and fundraiser. He will lead UNLV on its path to become a high-performing, community-engaged Tier One research university. Among his top priorities is the development of a UNLV School of Medicine. Like many of UNLV’s students, Jessup was the first in his family to graduate from college. This experience informs his understanding of the crucial role universities play in transforming families and communities, and it has been a motivating factor in his career in higher education leadership. Prior to UNLV, Jessup served as dean of the Eller College of Management at the University of Arizona (2011-2014), where he was also professor of entrepreneurship and innovation and the Halle Chair in Leadership. He led Eller to become a self-sustaining college with higher national rankings that robustly contributes to the state’s economic development. As a founding board member of the University of Arizona Health Network, he also contributed to the rethinking and restructuring of the university’s academic medical center. Jessup is a leading researcher in management information systems, with a focus on the use of emerging technology in higher education and business, new venture strategies, and social entrepreneurship. He was instrumental in creating the University of Arizona’s technology transfer and commercialization program, Tech Launch Arizona. He led the development and expansion of online degree and executive education programs at Arizona and helped drive similar innovations in previous positions at Washington State University (2000-2011) and Indiana University (1995-2000). During more than a decade at Washington State University, Jessup was tapped for a variety of leadership roles. As dean of the WSU College of Business, he led a complete two-year reengineering of the business program, which included university-wide Entrepreneurship and Innovation Initiative that created intra-university pipelines between colleges to make the most of new ideas. As vice president of university development and president of the WSU Foundation, he transformed the university’s fundraising efforts, helping to double overall fundraising totals and welcoming record numbers of donors to the university. A former baseball player in the highly competitive California junior college system, Jessup received his B.A. in information and
communication studies in 1983 and his MBA in 1985, both from California State University, Chico. He earned his Ph.D. in organizational behavior and management information systems from the University of Arizona’s Eller College of Management in 1989, and was awarded the Outstanding Ph.D. Alumnus in 2004. Jessup resides with partner Kristi Staab, a former telecommunications industry executive who owns and operates a successful leadership and sales training and development business. Jessup has a daughter, Jamie, and a son, David.

KUNZER-MURPHY Born and raised in Las Vegas, Tina Kunzer-Murphy has been a fixture in the Southern Nevada sports community for more than four decades. On July 1, 2013, she added another accomplishment to her long and varied career as she began serving as UNLV Interim Director of Athletics. The move marked two major milestones as Kunzer-Murphy became both the first woman and the first alum of the school to run the department. Just six months later, the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents removed the interim tag from Kunzer-Murphy’s title and approved a threeyear contract for her to serve as the school’s permanent AD. “I want to thank the Board of Regents for the tremendous support that they’ve given to me and to UNLV Athletics,” Kunzer-Murphy said. “It’s an unbelievable and humbling opportunity to work on behalf of our 450 student-athletes and their talented head coaches. We have a lot of hard work ahead of us but it’s a great thing to wake up every morning knowing that you get a chance to make a real difference at your alma mater in your own hometown.” As UNLV’s Director of Athletics, Kunzer-Murphy made a national splash with the hire of football coach Tony Sanchez in December of 2014 and in May 2015 she announced the construction of the Anthony and Lyndy Marnell III Baseball Clubhouse, which will serve as the home for UNLV Baseball. Also under her leadership, UNLV has continued to dominate the Governor’s Series, which is an all-encompassing competition against rival Nevada, Reno, as the Rebels have won the series every year since its inception in 2012. A graduate of Valley High School, Kunzer-Murphy first attended Southern Utah, where she lettered in swimming, before transferring to UNLV to compete in both tennis and volleyball at her hometown university. She earned her bachelor’s degree in physical education from the school in 1975. While pursuing a graduate degree she served as a tennis instructor and dance teacher at both UNLV and Clark County Community College (now CSN). Soon after earning her master’s in education in 1977, she was hired as head coach of the UNLV women’s
tennis team as well as director of its cheerleading program. When the school dropped tennis for financial reasons in the early 1980s, she was thrust into a management role under then-athletics director Brad Rothermel, and eventually worked with the football and basketball programs, among others, during the department’s wildly successful run through the PCAA/Big West Conference. Named UNLV’s Senior Women’s Administrator in 1981, Kunzer-Murphy oversaw the entire Lady Rebel athletic program, as well as various support groups such as the Rebel Football Foundation, the Rebel Golf Foundation and the Women’s Sports Foundation, which she helped create. In 1983, she was named an assistant athletics director and in 1987 was promoted to senior assistant AD. Kunzer-Murphy became senior associate AD at the University of Pacific in 1992 but then soon returned to town to work for the Las Vegas 51s and Thunder professional sports franchises as director of corporate sales and marketing. After UNLV moved to the Western Athletic Conference in 1996, Kunzer-Murphy was hired by the WAC to run its annual football championship game and men’s and women’s basketball championship events in Las Vegas. Kunzer-Murphy returned to campus in 1999 when she was selected by ESPN Regional Television (ERT) to run the newly formed ESPN Regional at UNLV office, which oversaw the athletic department’s corporate sales and broadcasting departments until 2005. From 2000-12, Kunzer-Murphy served as Executive Director of the Las Vegas Bowl, which ERT purchased. Under her leadership, the bowl game enjoyed six consecutive sellouts from 2006-11, record-high TV ratings and team payouts en route to elevating itself into the national college football landscape A 2007 inductee of the Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame, Kunzer-Murphy in 2010 became the first

In summer 2011 she was honored as Las Vegas’ Sportsperson of the Year as part of the annual “24-Hour Radiothon” staged by Lotus Broadcasting, which benefits The Caring Place, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to easing the journey of those affected by cancer. Kunzer-Murphy returned to work for her alma mater in January of 2013 when she was named Director of Sponsorships and Development for the UNLV Alumni Association. She has been married to former UNLV coach and local high school teacher and coach Greg Murphy since 1990. She has one son, Stephen, who is married to the former Ginny Broffitt. The couple has a son, Jackson Thomas Kunzer, born Sept. 1, 2014.

STADIUM
hall of fame HALL HALL OF OF FAME FAME HALL OF FAME
Class of 2012
Seven different Rebel sports were represented during ceremonies as the UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2012 was honored Oct. 12, 2012. Six former Rebel standout players, one head coach and a distinguished contributor joined one team in being inducted the night before the Battle for the Fremont Cannon football game between UNLV and Nevada, Reno. Also being honored that night was former Rebel football player and current TV personality, Kenny Mayne, who received the Silver Rebel Award Born in 1987, UNLV’s Athletics Hall of Fame has now grown to 114 members strong. Under the hall’s bylaws, former student-athletes must have completed their eligibility at least 10 years earlier to be selected. Coaches and administrators must have stopped working at the University five years previous. All classes now enter on a biennial basis.
FRED ALBRECHT (1974-83, 1995, 2003) The winningest coach in UNLV tennis history, led the Rebel netters and compiled a record of 230-80 for a winning percentage of .742. A longtime administrator on campus, Albrecht was called upon to serve as Interim Athletics Director in both 1995 and 2003 during searches for permanent replacements. He retired from UNLV in 2007 after 38 years with a final title of vice president for university and community relations. LORENA DIACONESCU (1998-02) is arguably the Rebels women’s swimming program’s most decorated athlete. She won three consecutive Conference Swimmer of the Year awards from 2000-02 while setting school records in six separate events. Diaconescu earned All-America in 2000 and was honorable mention one year later. Winner of eight MW individual crowns as well as seven relay titles, she was also a two-time Olympian for her home country of Romania. LINDA FROHLICH (1998-02) The highest-scoring basketball player in UNLV history – men’s or women’s – finished with 2,355 points and a 21.2 PPG average in her dominating hoops career. The native of Oldendorf, Germany, was named USBWA National Freshman of the Year in 1999, AP Honorable Mention All-America as a sophomore and junior and then Third Team as a senior. EDDIE OWENS (1973-77) Still the leading Runnin’ Rebel scorer in history, was the emerging program’s second All-American in men’s basketball when he was tabbed First Team by a pair of outlets as a junior in 1976. JACINT SIMON (1998-2002) turned in a career in the water that rivaled any in school history. The Mountain West Swimmer of the Year three consecutive seasons earned All-America honors at the 2000 NCAA Championships while also being honorable mention in two relays. His fourth All-America finish came in 2002. Simon won 10 conference championships as an individual and one on a relay team and swam for his home nation of Hungary in the 2000 Summer Olympics. AMIE STEWART (1992-95) was a dominant pitcher for dominant softball program in the mid-1990s. A second team All-America selection as a senior in 1995, her 30-9 mark is still the school record for wins a season. She led her team all the way to the Women’s College World Series and tossed two complete games while finishing with a .95 ERA en route to becoming the only Rebel to be named to a WCWS All-Tournament Team. KEVIN THOMAS (1998-01) Arguably the top cornerback in school history, still holds numerous school and conference defensive records. The first player in school history to start 46 games, Thomas was the first defensive player from UNLV to earn All-America status in 26 years when he was named Third Team by Football News and Fourth Team by Sporting News. The 1984 UNLV FOOTBALL TEAM was the first of two in school history to win a conference championship and its 11-2 overall record included a victory over Toledo in the California Bowl. Going undefeated in the PCAA, the talent-rich squad featured the conference Offensive Player of the Year in All-America punter/quarterback Randall Cunningham; the Defensive Player of the Year in lineman Aaron Moog; and the Coach of the Year in Harvey Hyde. DISTINGUISHED CONTRIBUTOR MIKE MILLER is noted Las Vegas artist and illustrator. During the 1980s, Miller created and named the cartoon man with the long moustache known as “Hey Reb.” Miller was paid a single dollar for his work, which eventually helped UNLV vault to the top spot in college apparel licensing.
