seating capacity is 19,522 (boxing). Basketball holds 18,500.  The Thomas & Mack Center has 30 VIP luxury suites.  Height from floor to ceiling is 104 feet.  The concourse is 42,000 square feet.  The floor is 8,600 square feet (bleachers extended) and 20,000 square feet (bleachers retracted).  The floor is evenly illuminated with 350 foot candles of metal Halide light.  The Center is cooled by 1,175 tons of air conditioning.  The very first event was held on Nov. 21, 1983, featuring the Runnin’ Rebels vs. Victoria, Canada.  The largest attendance at an event was 20,321 at the Runnin’ Rebels vs. Navy game (Dec. 29, 1986).  The gala grand opening was held on Dec. 16, 1983, featuring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Diana Ross.  Phish drew the single largest concert attendance 18,300 (Sept. 30, 2000).  Garth Brooks drew the largest concert series (72,076 for four nights - 18,019 avg. - Aug. 13-16, 1998).  The Thomas & Mack Center is only 1/2 mile from McCarran International Airport and less than five minutes from the famous Las Vegas Strip.

SeaSSon outlook Sea third year of rice era begins with many new faces runnin' rebels looking for fifth straight ncaa trip

returning players Senior Carlos Lopez-Sosa along with juniors Bryce Dejean-Jones and Khem Birch will be looked upon for the leadership for this year's team, at least early on. Sophomore Daquan Cook saw limited action for the Runnin’ Rebels as a freshman last season and will return for his second year, while junior Roscoe Smith is now eligible after transferring from Connecticut, where he was a starter on the 2011 national championship team as a freshman. Although not technically a returner, he practiced all season last year with the Runnin' Rebels. Non-scholarship junior Barry Cheaney is the only other player returning from

the 2012-13 team that appeared in games for UNLV. He is expected to redshirt this season. Just how inexperienced are this year's Runnin' Rebel returners? Lopez-Sosa is the only scholarship player on UNLV's roster this season that has earned more than one letter with the program. Last season the 6-11 forward from Lajas, Puerto Rico, provided a spark off the bench when he was called on. He averaged just under nine minutes played per game, while scoring 2.2 points with 1.3 rebounds per contest. However, he has appeared in 93 career games over three seasons for the Runnin' Rebels. “Carlos is extremely experienced and will play quality minutes for us this season,” Rice said. “He is a versatile player who can be a low-post presence on the offensive end and also can face the basket and make jump shots.” Dejean-Jones and Birch are the only two returning starters from last year's team. DejeanJones, a 6-5 guard from Los Angeles, Calif., who transferred from USC after the 2010-11 season, is the Runnin' Rebels' leading returning scorer as he averaged 10.3 ppg and recorded 33 steals, which is also the most for any returner. “Bryce had a very good sophomore season,” Rice said. “There is no doubt he has the ability to be an explosive scorer, but one of the things that we will be relying on him for very heavily this year will be his perimeter defense. It felt like by the end of last year he was one of the best perimeter defenders in our league. He is a versatile player whose experience will be counted on." Birch, a 6-9 forward from Montreal, Quebec,

OUTLOOK

Since the end of the 2012-13 college basketball season, the UNLV Runnin' Rebel program experienced some major milestones. In June, UNLV freshman Anthony Bennett became the second Runnin’ Rebel to be taken as the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft, and then in September, legendary former UNLV men's basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian was enshrined in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Bennett joined former Runnin' Rebel Larry Johnson as the only two former UNLV men's basketball players to go No. 1 overall in the draft, and in doing so, UNLV became just the 16th school to have multiple top picks and only the third in the last 22 years. “We are very happy for Anthony and his family,” third-year UNLV head coach Dave Rice said. “He has become a great representative, not only of our men’s basketball program, but of our university as a whole. He talks about how much he loved it here and values being a Runnin’ Rebel. It is a huge thing to have the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft come from our program.” The celebration of UNLV men's basketball continued into September when the long wait finally ended for one of the most successful coaches in the history of the NCAA to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Then, in October, a statue of Coach Tarkanian that now sits between the Thomas & Mack Center and the Mendenhall Center was installed and dedicated in a ceremony honoring the legendary figure. “Coach Tarkanian is no doubt a Hall of

Famer, and it was great that he finally was able to be recognized as one,” Rice said. “We all know that the tradition he built on the court was outstanding, and it was great for him and his family to be inducted into the Hall of Fame and then for the statue to become a reality.” With one of the more memorable offseasons in program history now behind us, the attention has turned to the 2013-14 version of the Runnin' Rebels. Even though there was much to celebrate these past few months, there were also many changes within the program. Gone are many of the familiar faces from a year ago, and in their place a large number of newcomers. With so many new faces, much is unknown about this year's team that has been picked to finish second in the Mountain West by the media. The Runnin' Rebels return five players that saw time on the court from last year's NCAA Tournament team, including just two starters. “With a lot of new faces, we want to build on what we were able to accomplish in our first two seasons,” Rice said. “We feel like we have a talented group, but one that may take some time to gel. Cohesiveness, unselfishness and team chemistry look to be some of the keys that may unlock the potential that many feel this Runnin' Rebel team has. The UNLV roster has an astonishing 10 players that have yet to play a game in a Runnin’ Rebel uniform, and with that many new guys, no one is exactly sure what to expect as the 2013-14 campaign begins. “We have a group with a lot of ability and a several guys that are back from last year, whose experience will be counted on heavily,” Rice said. “The leadership from our returning players will be very important and they will be expected to help with making the transition of our new players as smooth as possible.”

SeaSSon outlook Sea who missed the first half of last season following his midseason transfer from Pittsburgh, led the team with 68 blocks and averaged 7.2 ppg. He also hauled in 5.7 rebounds per game and was named UNLV's first Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year since 2007. “Khem has worked extremely hard on his game in the offseason,” Rice said. “We fully expect him to have a breakout season this year, but not just at the defensive end. He understands his identity is on defense with blocking shots and rebounding, but he has worked extremely hard on his offensive game and he will become a very reliable post presence for us on that side of the ball as well.” Cook, a 6-1 guard from Baltimore, Md., saw action in 25 games last year and averaged 4.3 minutes per game. He will be looked upon to provide depth at the point guard spot this season. “Daquan is a natural point guard,” Rice said. “He has a good feel for where the ball needs to get to. He has worked hard on his strength and conditioning in the offseason.” Roscoe Smith, a 6-8 forward from Baltimore, Md., will add some much needed depth and experience to this year's line-up. “Roscoe brings great experience from having been a starter on a national championship team at UConn,” Rice said. “He was coached by a hall of fame coach and is a high-energy player, a tremendous rebounder and defender, and a very capable scorer.” Demetris Morant, is a 6-9 freshman forward from Las Vegas, who was a redshirt for UNLV last season and non-scholarship player Charles Rushman, a 6-3 guard from Milwaukee, Wis., is also back as a redshirt freshman. "Demetris is an explosive player who blocks shots, rebounds and runs the floor well," Rice said. He has worked extremely hard on his offensive game and is a terrific teammate.

"Charles continues to work hard on his game and has the ability to make shots. He plays extremely hard." Cheaney is a 6-1 junior guard from Corona, Calif. "Barry has been a valued member of our program," Rice said. "He has done extremely well in school and has made us much better on the floor."

newcomers The Runnin’ Rebels have seven true newcomers on this year's roster, but the group isn't without some quality experience. Transfers Jelan Kendrick, Deville Smith and Kevin Olekaibe all have come to UNLV with previous Division I playing experience. UNLV has also added true freshmen Jamal Aytes, Kendall Smith, Dantley Walker and Christian Wood. All have a common trait in having come from winning programs before joining the Runnin' Rebels. Kendrick, a 6-6 junior guard from Atlanta, Ga., and Deville Smith, a 6-0 junior guard from Jackson, Miss., both attended junior colleges last season. Kendrick at Indian Hills Community College and Deville Smtih at Southwest Mississippi Community College, but both played in the Southeastern Conference before that. Kendrick played in 18 games, making two starts, for Ole Miss during the 2011-12 season and helped the Rebels to a 20-14 overall record. He originally committed to Memphis, but transferred midyear and used his redshirt during the spring and fall of 2011 at Mississippi. “Jelan brings great experience,” Rice said. “He is an extremely versatile player who can play any of the three perimeter spots. He is a natural

leader who plays like a point guard whether he is playing at the point or on the wing. He can score but is always looking to make plays for his teammates.” Deville Smith played in 26 games for Mississippi State and helped the Bulldogs to a 21-12 overall record and a NIT appearance in 2011-12. He played 13 minutes per game that year, averaging 4.2 points and 1.9 assists per game. “Deville is an explosive point guard,” Rice said. “He has the ability to get anywhere on the floor with the ball. He is always looking to make plays for his teammates, but has the ability to make open shots and be a scorer. He can be a lock-down defender and does a great job of guarding his position. He will be very important for our press.” If Olekaibe is familiar to UNLV fans, it is for good reason. The 6-2 senior guard transferred to UNLV this summer after spending three years at Fresno State. The Las Vegas native is eligible to play immediately for the Runnin’ Rebels as he was granted a hardship waiver by the NCAA and the Mountain West because of his father's health. He averaged 12.7 points per game during his career at Fresno State and helped the Bulldogs beat UNLV twice last season, averaging 17 points in those two games. He scored a total of 1,169 points during his Fresno State career. “Kevin brings a lot of great experience from having played three years at Fresno State and having scored close to 1,200 points,” Rice said. “He is a terrific outside shooter and a highquality person. He was coached very well on the defensive end and he brings a lot of experience in terms of understanding game prep and defensive responsibility.” Aytes, a 6-6 forward from San Diego, Calif., also joined the UNLV program during the summer.

He started to shine during the end of the recruiting season in AAU play and received a lot of attention. "Jamal is a terrific teammate and a very capable post presence," Rice said. "He has great hands and solid fundamentals. He has the ability to score the ball at the offensive end, is a relentless rebounder and is absolutely a winner." Kendall Smith, a 6-2 guard from Anitoch, Calif., was named the Mountain West's Preseason Freshman of the Year, while Walker, a 5-11 guard from Panaca, Nev., comes to UNLV after serving a two-year LDS mission. He was the leading prep scorer in state history with 3,304 career points. "Kendall is a confident player," Rice said. "He is a strong guard who can play both on and off the ball. He is very good at getting other players involved, but also has a great midrange game and we think will be a very capable defender for us. "Dantley is a terrific shooter, who was away from the game for a couple of years. He is very popular with his teammates and we are excited to have him in our program." Wood, a 6-10 forward, joins UNLV after playing at Findlay Prep, where he helped the Pilots win 54 straight games and an ESPN National High School Invitational championship as a junior. "Christian is a versatile outside-inside player," Rice said. "He just turned 18 so it is very obvious the potential that he has. He is a capable scorer, a very good rebounder and will no doubt be a terrific player at UNLV as he gains more experience."

the schedule The Runnin’ Rebels’ non-conference schedule is highlighted by games against Big Ten opponent Illinois and the Pac-12's Arizona and Arizona State. “We will always play a competitive schedule and feel the non-conference portion will prepare us for conference play," Rice said. "We know how competitive our conference is so we are excited to be having the teams that we have coming into the Thomas & Mack Center.” UNLV opens the season with six straight home games in November: against Portland State, UC Santa Barbara, Omaha, Arizona State, Illinois and UT Martin. The team will then head out on the road when the National Finals Rodeo takes over the Thomas & Mack Center. The Runnin’ Rebels will

Returning for their third season on the coaching staff under Rice is Heath Schroyer and Stacey Augmon, while Todd Simon has been added for the 2013-14 season. Simon comes to UNLV after seven years with the Findlay Prep program, including last season as its head coach. “We are excited about our coaching staff,” Rice said. “I have always believed that one of the keys to a successful program is great staff chemistry and there is no doubt that we have that with Coach Schroyer, Coach Augmon and Coach Simon. They are all very capable, have done a terrific job recruiting and they spend a lot of time with the guys helping them develop both on and off the court.”

play at Arizona on December 7 on ESPN 2 and at Southern Utah on December 14. UNLV will return home for the first two games of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic against Radford and Sacred Heart at the Thomas & Mack Center, before moving over to the Orleans Arena to face Santa Clara and either Mississippi State out of the Southeastern Conference or South Florida, which was a recent member of the Big East. The Runnin’ Rebels will wrap up their non-conference schedule against Cal State Fullerton on December 28 at the Thomas & Mack Center. UNLV will open Mountain West play on New Year’s Day at Fresno State and will open the home portion of the conference schedule against Air Force on January 4. The first of two games against intrastate-rival Nevada, Reno will be on January 8 in Las Vegas. One of the tougher road trips the Runnin’ Rebels look to have on the schedule will be January 15-18 when they travel to New Mexico and San Diego State. The team will return home to host MW-newcomer Utah State on January 22 and will wrap up its series with Fresno State on January 25. UNLV will make its first trip to San José State since 1997 on January 29 and will return to Las Vegas to host Boise State on February 1. The rest of the month of February will include trips to Colorado State and Utah State on February 5 and February 15, and hosting Wyoming, New Mexico and Colorado State on February 8, 19 and 26, respectively. The Runnin’ Rebels will also make a trip to Boise State on February 22. UNLV will finish its MW slate with a game at Air Force on March 1, hosting San Diego State on March 5 and traveling to UNR on March 8. The Mountain West tournament, which will be played at the Thomas & Mack Center for the seventh straight year, will be held March 12-15.
