Mirage Yearbook, 1966

There exists in universities such as ours a complex and intangible abundancy of component parts which merge, almost unnoticeably into the final, concrete product which is revered, cherished and forever esteemed in the minds of those who have partaken of its rewarding challenges. But to trace these minute and nebulous particles of collegiate structure is to venture out upon a task far more difficult and insurmountable than one realizes. Even if we were to completely disregard the inanimate aspect of any university, we would still be confronted with a massive array of bits and pieces that congregate to form a college's most precious ingredient-the student. Within the confines of this campus lies an untapped resource of emotion, greatness, love, intelligence and beauty as to challenge the social grandeur of any organized group of human beings on earth. Here then, is a dissection of the basic component parts of the University of ew ifexico ... great and small, beautiful and hideous, sub and super, radiant and introverted, vivid and mellow, obvious and subtle. ..

The death of Will Harrison, prominent New Mexico journalist brought an end to the career of a widely followed columnist, skilled in his profession and admired by his colleagues. In April of this year, a grove of six pine trees were planted on the east side of the Journalism Building in tribute to this renowned writer. During those ceremonies, Journalism Department Chairman Keen RaHerty presented testimonial scrolls to the widow, Mrs. Will Harrison and a daughter, Mrs. William Young on behalf of those persons to whom the death of Mr. Harrison was considered most tragic. The grove and the scrolls were a result of the eHorts of the Department of Journalism, The University of New Mexico.

To the graduating seniors of this university, we share with you the satisfaction of having reached the end of a major achievement. F or us, the publication of this book represents a milestone in the lives of those who have offered their services to it. To you, after four arduous years of laboring in classrooms over countless pages of reading material, having gained knowledge in the laboratory, having dragged yourselves home after those memorable dances, having done everything conducive to the life of the vibrant, active and overwhelming abundance of enthusiasm and productivity that is a college student, you now embark upon the very purpose of those four or so years. No finer salute can be offered to you than the eternal wish of success and good luck. To those of us who remain behind for yet more years of this vast and expansive pool of learning which we now look upon as drudgery, we can only resign ourselves to a more involved and greater effort to secure the final attainment of our ambitions. Even those who have progressed no further than perhaps one year have, if only for a short time, tasted of the need for advancement to plant those few seeds so necessary in the complex world that exists beyond the perimeters of this campus. To all of these persons, to all of their accomplishments and to all of their dreams, this book sincerely, respectfully and entirely dedicates itself.

This book is the effort of many persons, many talents, and many hours. Though plagued by difficulties, it somehow has managed to make its way into your hands, only through the combined efforts of those who thought that there was indeed something here worthwhile. As editor, I should like to express my appreciation to those who lent their support and offered their aid. A very special thanks to Carl Macaluso, Pete Kendall, and Lee Jennings. And a final offering of appreciation to Chuck Lanier who saw to it that the book became a reality, even though the prospects became more and more grim. And to Barbara Knott, only a brief word so that she may realize that I hope her help extends far beyond the year of this Mirage. Thomas Ormsby
