Welcome to UNM Continuing Education Youth Summer Programs! Our goal is to offer a one-of-a-kind, educati onal and engaging summer ex perience for the youth in your life, whether they be jus t about to enter kinderga rten, or anticipating their final year of high school. We know that it is critical to keep mind s active and school-read y throughout the summer and we ho pe that we can encoura ge the enthusiasm that your ch ild has for a lifetime lov e of learning. There are some excitin g additions this year for kids like Virtual Reality, ECO Kid s, Gemology, Sheep to Shawl, and new topics at the UNM Maxwell Museum. Aspiring college students will be happy to know that we are launching a new comp onent to our program called UNMCE Test Prep. SAT and ACT Summer Institutes will help you feel ready to master these important college admi ssions exams! We’ll also be hosting SA T and ACT Blitz classes in-person and live-online through out the year aligned wi th test dates. Summer inspires at UN MCE. Whether expertly presenting a mock trial, programm ing a LEGO® robot, or hiking the Sandia mountains, the re is joy and discovery in all that we do, and we’d like to sh are that with you. Amy Greene Youth Program Supervisor

Bringing expertise from the nonprofit, education, and government sectors, Amy Greene has dedicated her career to youth development and community service. She holds a B.S. in Marine Biology from the University of Rhode Island and an M.P.A. in Non Profit Management from Suffolk University. Amy is excited to coordinate a diverse range of youth programs for the families in our community. She is always open to new ideas, feedback, and questions and looks forward to hearing from you. Location Guide In addition to our classrooms here at Continuing Education located at 1634 University Blvd NE (University and Indian School Rd), Summer Youth Programs are held at a variety of locations on UNM Main Campus, as well as educational venues in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho to allow youth to benefit from access to state of the art facilities where our expert instructors teach. Youth Program Policies REGISTRATION For registration information, class availability, class cancellations or waiting lists, call 505-277-0077. For general questions, email youth@unm.edu. Parents or guardians must sign students in and out of each class session unless prior permission is given. Please download and complete the Emergency Contact and Code of Conduct Forms at ce.unm.edu/downloads, and bring them to the first class session. A minimum enrollment is needed for the camps and classes to run as scheduled. If a class or camp is cancelled by the UNM Continuing Education Youth program, a full refund will be provided. Participants requesting special accommodations need to contact the Youth Program Supervisor two weeks prior to the start of course at 505-277-0698.

REFUNDS

Requests to refund tuition must be made in writing and received 3 business days prior to the first class meeting. UNM Continuing Education retains $15 as a processing fee. Send or bring your request to the UNMCE Registration office, fax to 505-277-1990, or email ceregistration@unm.edu.

TUITION REMISSION

Youth classes are not eligible for the UNM Tuition Remission Benefit. However, many employees reserve pre-tax flexible spending dollars to pay for children’s spring break and summer programs.

LUNCH TIME SUPERVISION

Camp participants registered for a full day at the SAME camp location should bring a packed lunch to be eaten with camp staff supervision (except the Signature Camps where lunch is provided by the City of Albuquerque). Camp staff will then walk the participants to their afternoon programming at that site. Vehicle transportation between camp sites is not available and is the responsibility of the family.

Participants in our Signature Camps will receive T-shirts, a free lunch at no cost in cooperation with the City of Albuquerque, and will be walked by camp staff from AM to PM camps after lunch.

Early Bird Care (ages 6-10) Early bird, before-camp care is offered for campers enrolled in PBS Kids Summer Learning Camps, courses 17310 and 17320. Pre-registration is required. Sci Girls Camp (ages 9-14) Based on the popular PBS program, this camp will investigate STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) projects that are personally meaningful. Participants will collaborate, communicate, engineer and discover through hands-on, open-ended projects that apply creativity, each person’s unique talents, and preferred learning styles. Participants will gain confidence with their inquiry and problem-solving skills, and discover exciting STEM careers! Note: The program is geared towards gender equity in the STEM fields, so anyone is welcome to participate. Youth Sports Fitness (ages 6-14)

Do you know an active kid who loves to move? During this camp, participants rotate through daily sports activities that include tennis, tumbling, soccer, badminton, softball, volleyball, basketball, track and field, and swimming. In groups arranged by ages, campers are guided in the practice of effective teamwork and sportsmanship. Note: All activities take place in Johnson Center and on Johnson Field on the UNM Main Campus. Fitness for Children High Desert Kids Yoga Camp (ages 5-11)

Kids yoga camp is a lively and fun place to instill valuable life lessons of self-care, confidence, body awareness, and healthy habits. We do this through making yoga fun and age appropriate. Everyone loves the challenge and excitement of meeting new friends, learning new poses, and using games and crafts to explore the many ways yoga can help balance the mind & body. Tae Kwon Do for Children (ages 6-12) Have fun learning the basics of Tae Kwon Do, the Korean art of self-defense, in these age-appropriate classes. You will develop social, motor and safety skills that will help you excel in your life. Notes: Uniforms are included in the class fee and classes take place in an inviting 8100-square-foot training center. Valid for new students only. Not valid with any other coupons or specials. Musical Theater Workshop (ages 6-14) Build a show! Campers will work throughout the week to build a show from the ground-up. Camp will include daily studio instruction in jazz dance, plus they will practice their singing and acting, design costumes and sets, and learn a bit of dance and theater history. Culture & Creativity Camps for Children Camp Bee-Jammin’ (ages 6-12) A popular and engaging arts-based day camp, now in its 24th year (formerly Creative Arts Camp), that includes pre-assigned morning classes (by age) that are developed to give each camper a balance of music, art, drama and movement. Afternoon classes are mixed ages and include electives where campers can focus on different areas of interest. The classes range from high-energy to quiet and calm with each highly qualified instructor bringing a unique and skilled approach. A final performance for family and friends is held on the last Friday of camp to show off new skills. Note: Each camp section has unique content, so we welcome you to attend both. Jazz Camp (ages 7-12) Join us this summer to build your Jazz-playing and improvisation skills in a supportive and engaging environment. Participants will work with some of the region’s most respected musicians, including Cesar Bauvallet of the popular salsa band, Son Como Son. Previous experience playing Jazz is NOT a requirement. Camp eligibility is based on a minimum of one year experience playing an instrument, proficiency with scales (or keeping rhythm if a percussionist) and desire to focus on Jazz, a truly American art form. With an emphasis on soloing, participants will explore the art of Jazz improvisation by studying a variety of jazz styles at their own pace, while also learning music theory to help build understanding, skills, and confidence. Small combo work will integrate skills in improvisation, and reading with an emphasis on listening and group interaction. A portion of each day is reserved for listening to, and discussing Jazz trends, notable artists, and landmark sessions in Jazz history. Note: Students will present an end–of-camp concert for parents and friends on the final day. Acting for Stage and Screen (ages 6-12) Want to be in the movies? Do a play on a stage? Get ready to do all that and more! Young actors will spend five days working on plays, movies, commercials, and learn lots of hilarious improvisational games. We will also have props and funny costumes. Make new friends and be creative. We’ll show friends and family what we’ve been working on all week during our class on Friday. Toon Time Camp (ages 7-13) While having fun drawing cartoon characters, students will study character development and be introduced to the formal elements of drawing, including line, shape, placement, angles, textures, value, color and perspective. The camp uses the Born to Draw step-by-step drawing process to guide children through creating their own comic strip, with new cartoon characters this year. Knitting & Sewing Camp (ages 8-12) Here is your opportunity to learn the enjoyable fundamentals of sewing and knitting. This camp is a lively and fun place to instill valuable lessons of building self-confidence, self-esteem, focus, creativity, physical awareness and a great appreciation for the arts and crafts. Trained instructors will teach specialized skills and techniques in sewing and knitting created by the industry expert, Eric W. Stiles, a former supervisor and head tailor for Giorgio Armani and Polo Ralph Lauren. Non-crafters, beginners, intermediate, and experienced crafters alike can take this series of hands-on, intensive courses to learn how to do crafts and to advance in their skills. Note: Students must bring a sewing machine. All other supplies are included. Each week of camp may be taken separately to learn the basics, or together to continue on progress made in the first week. Dragon Makers Camp (ages 8-14) Become a “dragonologist,’ a dragon expert! Have fun learning how to draw and design dragons while discovering the different kinds of dragons and where they came from. Trashion Show: Finding Wearable Art (ages 8-14) This class is designed to help students tap into their creativity while at the same time reinforcing the concepts of conservation and recycling. Students will become familiar with fashion basics through a green and innovative perspective. From the basics of design, sketching, and hands-on techniques for working with recycled materials, students will make a garment and debut it in a fashion show for family and friends. Please bring an old, loose t-shirt that can be cut to the first class. Lobo Arts Access (ages 6-12) This collaboration between the UNM College of Fine Art’s Music Prep School and UNM Art Museum offers a unique opportunity for arts education in both music and visual arts. Participants will spend their days discovering these fine arts and will express their creativity through a variety of music making and art making sessions. We will have a performance and exhibition at the end of the summer – celebrating their creations! Gemology: Magma to Magic (ages 9-13) Do you want to become a Jr. Gemologist and be a real “rock” star? This fun and informative class will introduce students to the fascinating world of gems through a variety of hands-on projects from growing your own egg crystal geode to participating in a gem mining contest. The students will have a unique opportunity to explore what a gem is and how it is formed within the earth, how people’s labor brings them into use, and why we have valued gemstones throughout time. Sheep to Shawl: Fiber Arts Camp (ages 8-12) Meet some sheep and manage their wool as if you lived in the past! Learn how to clean historic sheep breed fiber, prepare it for spinning, spin it on a spindle, and weave it on a vertical loom in a historic property in Corrales, NM. Drawing and Painting: Still Life with Watercolor (ages 7-11) Painting with still life is designed to give formal drawing and painting instruction that explores the foundations and fundamentals of watercolor. Students will be drawing from 3D objects, pictures of landscapes and self-portraits. Students will increase their knowledge of the effects of light on form, volume and line. This is a great class to begin studies in art or to improve drawing skills and understanding color and color mixing. Note: Students must bring a 4”x6” photo of themselves printed. Make Your Case: Introduction to Law Camp (ages 10-14) Curious about the law? This camp will introduce kids to the legal process through hands-on participation in a mock trial. Led by an experienced judge and mock trial coach, participants will enhance their skills in public speaking, critical thinking and organization as they make their case. Students will work in groups to build their team robot as well as learn about programming in Easy C. Virtual Reality: The Future is Now (ages 8-11 and 11-14) Embark on an EPIC adventure in virtual reality! In this cutting edge class, you will learn the foundations of VR design by creating your own virtual worlds, exploring simulated environments, and crafting memorable 3D experiences. At the end of the week, take home your first cardboard VR headset to show friends and family the new worlds you created. VR projects can be viewed on a website or a mobile device. Graphic Design for Teens (ages 12-17) Every day, you are surrounded by graphic design: ads, posters, websites, signs, books and so much more. All of it is created by graphic designers. Graphic designers combine concepts, images and words to help people communicate with each other. In this class, you’ll learn how to mix pictures, shapes, typography, color and (most importantly!) your ideas into powerful visuals that can inform, influence and even inspire people. Final Cut Pro X: Professional Post Production (ages 15-17) Final Cut Pro X is a revolutionary video editing application that helps beginners and seasoned professionals achieve stunning results. In this three-day hands-on course, students become familiar with the user interface while they learn how to perform editing functions. Students work with real-world media to learn practical approaches to video editing--from basic techniques to Final Cut Pro’s powerful advanced features. Notes: This is an AATC course. STEM for Teens

Gemology: Magma to Magic (ages 14-17) Do you want to become a Jr. Gemologist and be a real “rock” star? This fun and informative class will introduce students to the fascinating world of gems through a variety of hands-on projects from growing your own egg crystal geode to participating in a gem mining contest. The students will have a unique opportunity to explore what a gem is and how it is formed within the earth, how people’s labor brings them into use, and why we have valued gemstones throughout time. Robotics Engineering Experience—Advanced (ages 10-17) This camp will provide an exciting experience in robotics and engineering that is suitable for all levels of experience for students 10-17. It includes an introduction to programming of RC (Radio Controlled) components and basic power tool use as teams use them to build a robot for the exciting camp competition. This camp will utilize the Engineering Design Process as campers work with teammates to come up with the best solution to real problems—then test and tweak their ideas. An overview of 3D Drawing techniques in DSS Solidworks will be included as well. In addition to building a robot to complete the task, students will work in a team environment, write an engineering manual, and learn important lessons in marketing and project management. Dendrochronology: Talking Trees, The Lords of the Rings (ages 10-17) What would a tree say if it could talk? Can it tell you its life story? You can find out! This class will introduce students to environmental awareness through the science of dendrochronology, or reading a tree’s growth rings. Through hands-on activities, students will have a unique opportunity to explore how a tree grows, and learn to determine not just age, but which environmental stresses can effect a tree’s growth, what climate changes have occurred in their own local environment over time and why this is important to our understanding of our past and future.
