Live and work in a historic city on an expansive mesa a mile above sea level. A city that’s simultaneously cosmopolitan and soulful, urban and rural, and brimming with light and possibilities. This is Albuquerque. A friendly place just around the corner from ordinary, on land bisected by historic Route 66 and the great Rio Grande, a stone’s throw from the monumental Sandia Mountains. Named for their sunset-crimson hue— “sandia” is the Spanish word for “watermelon”—they appear to leap out of the landscape to the east, and serve as an awe-inspiring example of the kind of wild, natural beauty that wraps around everything here and rushes off in every direction throughout the state. You’ll see.
It’s just kind of different here. Bigger. It seems to sweep much higher overhead, but also reaches down to kiss the sun-tanned plateau from horizon to horizon. Because that’s what the sky does over the largest city in the fifth-largest state in the country. It collaborates with thousands of wide-open miles of some of the most untamed territory in the Southwest to make an unforgettable impression on you. To inspire you.
Let me be among the first to thank you for your interest in The University of New Mexico’s department of Residence Life & Student Housing. We are so excited to have you consider what it would mean to be a part of our team, and I look forward to what you’ll share with us through the recruitment process!
I want to start with a note on our recruitment processes and philosophies—we want you to be able to bring your best, and we recognize that your best may come in a variety of forms. You are wonderful just as you are, so we hope you will come to us as you are, because we will do the same in return.
Residence Life & Student Housing at The University of New Mexico is proud to be the housing department of the flagship university for New Mexico; and we take our role on this campus seriously. I want everyone who chooses to join our team to be someone who can actively push themselves and our department to excellence, everyday. We won’t be perfect, but we can always aim to achieve excellence in what we do, where we are, with what we have.
In roles with our Residence Education team, you have the chance to work with both students and student staff. You will get to advise and supervise, and it is our hope that these experiences will help you develop on both a personal and professional level. We encourage you to try new things and take risks to ensure the best experience possible for the students. Because, at the end of the day, the students are at the heart and center of our work. Watching students and student staff grow and develop is my favorite part of this job, and I hope that you find it as amazing as I have.
Make no mistake, this job will be rewarding, but it will also be challenging. As a department, we are here for you in those moments. Part of actively pushing ourselves to excellence means being honest about when we need help. As a team, we have experienced a broad array of all that housing can throw at staff. We’ve seen the good, the bad, and the ugly, and are still here; so know that if you join us, you’re coming into a community of care and support.
As I said, I am so excited to have you as a member of our staff team. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to any member of your search team if you have any questions, and hope to get to meet you!
Sincerely,
MEGAN CHIBANGA Director, Residence Life & Student Housing“TO FOSTER INCLUSIVE, COMMUNITY-BASED LIVING ENVIRONMENTS CONSCIOUSLY DESIGNED FOR OUR RESIDENTS’ PERSONAL GROWTH AND ACADEMIC SUCCESS IN WELL-MAINTAINED FACILITIES.”
Quality: Through continuous evaluation and student feedback, UNM Residence Life and Student Housing seeks to meet a high standard of excellence within our facilities, services and processes.

All of our student and professional staff are highly trained and compassionate individuals who help residents connect to campus resources, personalize their housing experience, and achieve personal and academic goals.

The programs, activities and initiatives within our residence halls aim to develop residents into well-rounded individuals.
Community: UNM Residence Life and Student Housing embraces the idea that communities are comprised of diverse individuals from all walks of life. We nurture healthy, thriving communities that help residents feel connected to each other, as well as the institution. Residents are encouraged to participate as active and engaged citizens within their living areas.
At UNM Housing, we make it our mission for residents to feel comfortable and at home. UNM Housing is more than just a place to sleep. It’s a community where you will be sustained in the company of lifelong friends you have yet to meet.

Kansas City, MO Student Hall Coordinator
“I am very grateful for the time that I have spent with Residence Life and Student Housing. Starting as a member of Student Safety, becoming a Resident Advisor and finally a Student Hall Coordinator—I have experienced an education in and of itself! Along with providing me with some wonderful friendships, Res Life has taught me how to be a better student, friend and leader. Be it growing in empathy for others, getting on top of deadlines, or mastering the art of crafting, I am thankful for the opportunities and applicable lessons that Residence Life and Student Housing has given me.”
MERIT W.
Senior, History & Political Science
Albuquerque, New Mexico Student Hall Coordinator
“Working for Residence Life and Student Housing has been an opportunity that has given me a place to grow, not only as a professional but also as an individual. I truly believe that the housing experience is a valuable one that it can benefit anyone that enters it—whether they work for UNM Housing, or simply reside within the halls. I have spent the better part of three years working to improve the community that I live in through programs and intentional interactions. Overall, my experience with Residence Life and Student Housing has been one that has fundamentally changed my skills as a leader and as a member of an overall community.”
The Resident Education Unit is an integral part of Residence Life and Student Housing and reports to the Director. Resident Education is responsible for creating and maintaining a positive and healthy student life program in the residence halls including community development, educational programming, peer support, and student discipline. While the organizational structure of the Resident Education may change to meet the needs of the department, it will generally consist of the following groups:
The Director of Residence Life and Student Housing, the Assistant Director of Residence Life (ADRL), and the live-in Area & Hall Coordinators who are full time University staff members. These are considered to be the professional members of the ResEd senior staff.
AREA COORDINATOR (AC) :
The Area Coordinators are the most senior members of the live-in staff. They are responsible for supervising a Student Hall Coordinator and the professional Hall Coordinators in their area of assignment. The Area Coordinators also have responsibility for a major operational element for the residence education unit, such as student leadership or the Living Learning Program.
HALL COORDINATOR (HC) :
Hall Coordinators are full-time live-in professionals who are responsible for managing one community, including advising Community Association, RA staff supervision, and overall building management.
Considered a member of the ResEd senior staff, this person has building supervision responsibilities, but works closely with their Area Coordinator. This includes advising a Community Association, staff supervision, and building management components.
Live-In student staff members who live on a floor, wing, house or building, who have the primary responsibility of building a community amongst their residents which is welcoming of all and pushes the residents to grow through new experiences. SRAs have added responsibilities to assist the Hall Coordinators as they manage the community.
Live-in CDAs work closely with the building staffs and Community Associations to provide additional programming and community development efforts to enhance the resident experience.
DESK ATTENDANTS (DA) :
Hourly student staff who work at the area desks and assist with major operational elements of the resident experience, including check-in and check-out.
MAIL ATTENDANTS (MA) :
Hourly student staff who work in the mailroom on main campus to post mail daily and distribute resident packages.
REC ATTENDANTS :
Hourly student staff who work in the Hokona Cellar game room and assist the RLSH Programmer with system wide programming.
STUDENT SAFETY :
Student staff patrol the residence hall area throughout the day and alert the RA staff to possible issues. Safety staff also regularly assist the RA staff in incident response and provide escorts to vendors, students, staff, and interdepartmental maintenance.
Business Operations is responsible for various business operations that support the mission of Residence Life and Student Housing. RLSH is a selfsupporting auxiliary operation, which means we must operate our housing operations in a fiscally responsible model, managing a $10 million revenue budget and occupancy, to support all costs related to staffing, maintaining and operating university housing programs and facilities. Business Operations units include Marketing & Communications; Occupancy, data management & systems support; Revenues management including forecasts, revenues charges and billing; support for the UNM freshman residency requirement (FRR) ; Summer Conferences, Short Term Lodging & Summer Interns programs; HR support, payroll, and Finance - Accounting.
Facilities Management is responsible for the general upkeep, cleanliness and maintenance of not only our residence halls, but the grounds around the halls as well. We take pride in our beautiful campus and iconic buildings! At Facilities Management, we strive to achieve to the highest level of professionalism and dedication to our residents. We know that Resident Lobos experience a unique and unforgettable period in their lives while attending The University of New Mexico, and our contribution to that experience is quite literally the most visible part.
The Living Learning Program is the collection of Living Learning Communities within Residence Life & Student Housing. There are communities spread out across the system. The communities are organized around academic area, year of school, identity, or interest.
A living learning community is a group of students living on the same floor or area within the residence halls or apartments who share a particular interest. Some of our communities are academically oriented like the Engineering house and BAMD floor, some are based on year in school like our Graduate or Second Year Experience Communities, some are based on interest like our Outdoor Living and Global Focus communities, and others are based on identity like our Gender Neutral and Allies area. Living Learning Communities have an RA dedicated to them, as well as a connection point with another area of the University, that could be a faculty member or a department or resource center. There are programs and efforts that will be put on throughout the year that will be focused around the “theme” of the community.

The S.T.E.M. LLC is a great mix of upper classmen and freshmen, creating a focused, mentoring environment for S.T.E.M. students of all disciplines. Activities including advisement, guest professors and outings such as a visit to the Lobo formula-style race car, designed and built by UNM engineering students, provide learning opportunities outside the classroom.
The Residence Hall Association is the overall student government body of the UNM residence hall system and includes representation from each residence hall student government, including Casas Del Rio. RHA plans and coordinates activities for the residents, addresses their issues and concerns, and recommends policy change within RLSH and the University. RHA has the opportunity to make important and meaningful impacts on the residence hall system, but the goals and the accomplishments of RHA are determined by the membership. It is a great way to participate in and support residence hall government, so try to come by a meeting at least once during the semester when you do not have business to conduct or are requesting money.
Programming is intentional and designed to fulfill a specific purpose: to foster inclusive, community-based living environments consciously designed for our residents’ personal growth and academic success. The programming model should reflect both the RLSH mission and our core values. Considering the preexisting alignment between the mission statement and values, the programming model should also align in a student comprehensive manner; therefore, the third column notes the proposed language for programmatic dimensions which align with the RLSH mission and values.

Cutting-edge research at UNM is a cornerstone to accelerating knowledge, lifting the communities we serve, advancing our economy, improving health outcomes and, most importantly, putting that power in the hands and minds of our students.
Collaborations and creative collisions across all dimensions of academia, health care, industry and the public sector result in UNM being an engine of innovation—one where our students study, explore and create with faculty who are at the forefront of their disciplines.
UNM is the only university in New Mexico classified by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education as R1: doctoral universities with very high research activity, and is one of only 28 R1 universities to also be awarded a 2020 Carnegie Elective Classification on Community Engagement. These are not just bragging points—they are reflections of the incredible talent of the people who drive our mission, and our deep passion for serving the public good and enhancing our collective understanding of the world around us.

The Lobo Life is every experience a Lobo can have beyond being a student, exploring what makes the community at The University of New Mexico so special. This is for the untamed side of every Lobo. This is for the students who want to make the most of their four-or-so years here. The Lobo Life was founded to create a place to showcase all of the experiences that bring us together while pushing us out of our comfort zones. It’s a community for those who love the outdoors, those who live for culture, those who seek out the best new food around town, and those Lobos who are chasing a sense of adventure.
The Lobo Life exists as a community for UNM students to share their adventures with others, to find friends with which to share in adventures and to discover all this state has to offer. Join by following @TheLoboLife on Instagram and sharing your adventures with #thelobolife for a chance to be featured. If you’d like to become an explorer, attend one of our meetings or adventures (email us lobolife@unm.edu or connect with us on Instagram for those details).
The Outdoor Rental & Resource Center, located in Johnson Center is your one-stop-shop for everything outdoors. Whether you need to rent outdoor equipment or need help planning a day trip to a multi-week adventure, the experienced staff at the center can assist you.

1. KIWANIS CABIN
According to the United States Department of Agriculture, the cabin was built as an inclement weather shelter for the trail crews that worked to bring us Sandia’s 28 hiking trails that are now used and loved by many. Its location on the western facing side of the mountain makes it the ideal place to watch the sunset over Albuquerque!
2. SANDIA PEAK TRAM
Climbing over a mile up the steep western face, the Sandia Peak Tram is the longest aerial tram in the United States and boasts some of the best views of any tram in the world. The ride runs about 15 minutes over three towers, while the car you ride in offers views looking down into the deep ravines hundreds of feet below. The tram is the best way to see the Sandias, especially getting to the top to witness the NM sunset!
3. PADDLING THE RIO GRANDE
Coursing through the entire Land of Enchantment, the Rio Grande is a familiar river to New Mexicans. Because of the vast amount of land it spans, there are a multitude of ways to experience the scenic waterway. One of the most fun and relaxing ways is to kayak with an outfitter. Our favorite is Quiet Water Paddling Adventures as they’re a 20 minute drive from campus, but there are many outfitters to choose from!
4. 66 DINER
Just a few blocks west down Central Ave from campus, you’ll find the 66 Diner.
Named after and located on the famous old Route 66, the 66 Diner is brimming with nostalgic paraphernalia from decades gone by, with food that’s just as classic. From the iconic milkshakes that come in every variety imaginable to the usual hallmarks of an American Diner, the menu offers a wide variety of mouth-watering meals!
5. THE RAILYARD MARKETS
The Albuquerque Railyards Market is a weekly event through summer and fall that draws growers, brewers, artists and more together to share with the community what it is they love to do. Shopping for jewelry, fresh produce or simply enjoying a coffee with the sights are just a few of the things you can do here!
6. PETROGLYPH NATIONAL MONUMENT
(photos from NPS)
Petroglyph National Monument is a 15 minute drive from campus and is one of the largest petroglyph sites in North America. These rock carvings are estimated to be 400-700 years old and offer a glimpse into New Mexico’s past. Along with the petroglyphs, there are also several fun hiking and walking trails that offer an easy escape from the city!
7. EMPIRE BOARD GAME LIBRARY
Empire Board Game Library is the perfect place to kick back, relax, and spend a few hours in another world. Just a short walk from campus in Nob Hill, cozy up and battle out who the true meme queen or king is, who can best rule ancient Egypt, ward off some zombies, and more. Let's not forget to mention the incredible food and drink options to keep you feeling satisfied throughout your game!
8. TINKERTOWN
