COMMENCEMENT D E C E M B E R 2 019

The Idea of a University A university is not bricks and mortar, not solely bricks and mortar. It is flesh and bone, dreams and reality, promise and fulfillment. Its totality is too broad for canvas, too elusive for print. It has moods and ages, like a person. Its seasons are all growing seasons and the harvests ever secure. A university is, above all, an experience. It exists in the hearts and minds of those who draw from its wisdom and add to its reputation. A university is a place, yes, but a place of the spirit. It is described, forever after, by its family, not as architecture, but as personality and precept and conversion. A university is what its alumni have become. They are its voice to the world. Some alumni achieve headlines, bear titles, manage corporations, represent constituents, build, create, publicize, minister, protect, teach. Some labor less conspicuously, contributing from the depths of their talents, fostering understanding, transmitting appreciation. They speak for us, our alumni. And they speak well. Robert T. Reilly, UNO Professor Emeritus

ACADEMIC REGALIA

History of the Hood and Robe Identification of the hood and robe as academic apparel is believed to have originated at the English universities of Oxford and Cambridge during the 12th and 13th centuries. The hoods are a carry-over from a time when monks, who operated these universities, wore them to protect their shaved heads in winter. The robes are an adaptation of the shoulder capes also worn by the monks while collecting alms. Use of the academic robe came to the United States in 1754, with the founding of what is now Columbia University. In 1895, a commission of university officials adopted a universal code of design and color for the academic garb. The code has undergone several revisions over the years. Styling of the robes varies for the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, with the width of sleeve borders and length of the hood increasing with each advanced degree. Hoods are not normally used for bachelor’s degrees today. Instead, tassel colors are used to indicate the degree program. All doctoral degree recipients are indicated by a gold tassel.

History of the Mace University maces symbolize the authority and independence of a chartered university and the authority vested in the chancellor. They are typically carried in at the beginning of a convocation ceremony or commencement.

Omicron Delta Kappa Active student members of the UNO Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society, shall be recognized by blue, white, and black honor cords, the official colors of the society.

Phi Kappa Phi Members of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s most selective all-discipline academic honor organization, shall be recognized by navy and gold honor cords or stoles.

Pi Gamma Mu Blue and white cords with blue tassels honor graduating members of Pi Gamma Mu, the International Honor Society in Social Science.

U.S. Military Veteran Red, white, and blue cords signify military service members and/or veterans.

Grades awarded in all courses taken at all colleges and universities attended are included in computing the Grade Point Average (GPA) for determining eligibility for honors. It should be noted that the GPA included in the student grade reports issued by the Office of the University Registrar reflects only courses taken at UNO, UNL, UNMC, and UNK.

In recognition of outstanding academic excellence, the UNL College of Engineering recommends bachelor’s degrees with Distinction, High Distinction, and Highest Distinction.

• To all graduates whose scholastic average for their entire university career and at UNO is 3.87 or above, the degree is conferred summa cum laude. • To all graduates whose scholastic average for their entire university career and at UNO is 3.63 or above, but below 3.87, the degree is conferred magna cum laude. • To all graduates whose scholastic average for their entire university career and at UNO is 3.51 or above, but below 3.63, the degree is conferred cum laude. • To qualify for honors, a student must have earned at least 60 semester hours within the University of Nebraska system, 30 hours of which must be completed at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and in which letter grades of “A,” “B,” “C,” or “D” are received.

Baccalaureate Degrees with Honors Extra Muros These degrees are awarded to transfer students who have not completed the required 60 semester hours of credit within the University of Nebraska system required for cum laude, magna cum laude, or summa cum laude honors.

University Honors Program The University Honors Program is a universitywide program that provides educational opportunities for high-ability students through special multidisciplinary seminars and participation in an academic level not generally possible in usual curricular offerings. The program was initiated in 1978. It is governed through the Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs and administered through the Honors Director. All UNO colleges implement the University Honors Program. As part of their Honors Program requirements, most students undertake a research project that results in a Senior Honors Thesis. Students who have been designated in this booklet as University Honors Program students have fulfilled the academic requirements of this program. University Honors Program graduates wear red stoles.

REGENTS' WELCOME

Barbara Weitz received her bachelor’s degree in political science from Carleton College, a master’s degree in public administration from New York University, and a master’s degree in social work from UNO. She is a retired faculty member of the UNO College of Public Affairs and Community Service's School of Social Work, and along with her husband, Wally Weitz, and their children was the catalyst behind the development and extraordinary growth of UNO’s service learning programs — now being integrated within K-12 schools throughout the Omaha community.

Barbara Weitz

She currently is involved with the Women’s Fund of Greater Omaha, Building Bright Futures, the Nebraska Children and Families Foundation, the Urban League of Nebraska, the Avenue Scholars Foundation and the University of Nebraska Foundation. She has received many awards and honors, including UNO Outstanding Teaching Award, Greater Omaha Women’s Fund Women’s Spirit Award, and Outstanding Alumni Award.

The Weitz Family Foundation made the lead gift to the Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center. Their support of this transformative project at UNO continues the family’s legacy of community engagement and enriching the lives of others. Barbara is an avid supporter of local and national nonprofit organizations, giving back to the Omaha community through her volunteerism and financial commitments.

ORDER OF THE TOWER

Dick and Mary Holland were both born and raised in Omaha. They loved Omaha and Nebraska and lived their entire lives here. In their later years they devoted themselves to giving away their fortune for the benefit of the community they loved. Dick was born in 1921. His father was an English immigrant, and his mother was a fifth generation Nebraska native. He attended Omaha Public Schools, graduating from Central High School in 1939. He attended Omaha University, majoring in chemistry until the outbreak of World War II. He served in the military until the end of the war, serving in Italy and North Africa. When he returned to the university, he changed his major to Fine Arts, and eventually joined his father at the Holland Advertising Agency, which he took over in due course. Richard Holland (posthumous) and the Holland Foundation

8

Mary was born in 1924, and attended Brownell Hall, and then Mills College in Oakland California, majoring in elementary education. Her mother and father were born in Chicago and Iowa respectively and settled in Omaha.

Dick and Mary married in 1948, and raised four children; Mary Ann Holland of Omaha, Nancy Christie of Fort Worth, Texas, Barbara Kral of Hawaii, and the late Richard Dean Holland Jr. Dick Holland built the Holland Advertising Agency into a successful business called Holland Dreves Reilly. He sold the agency, then named Rollheiser Holland Kayler, in 1979. The Hollands were fortunate enough to invest with Warren Buffett and became wealthy as a result. They believed that if you were fortunate to make a fortune, you should share it. They founded the Holland Foundation in 1996 and their philanthropy focused mainly on the arts, education, children, and poverty. Some of their greatest gifts have been to Opera Omaha, Omaha Performing Arts, Omaha Symphony, University of Nebraska at Omaha, Nebraska Medicine, Child Saving Institute, Northstar, and the Partnership 4 Kids. Mary passed away in 2006, and Dick in 2016, but the Holland Foundation, now led by a small board of directors that includes the Holland daughters, continues to benefit the Omaha community.

CHANCELLOR'S MEDAL

Bret Blackman, Chief Information Officer for the University of Nebraska at Omaha, has been a part of the UNO community for 23 years. In 2019, Blackman expanded his role and concurrently serves as Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer for the University of Nebraska system. Blackman leads a systemwide team of more than 300 staff on the campuses of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Nebraska at Kearney, and the University of Nebraska at Omaha as well as Central Administration. As a member of both the UNO Chancellor’s Cabinet and the NU President’s Executive Cabinet, he works closely with the chief academic, business, and legal officers on strategic information technology initiatives to serve the university community.

Bret Blackman

In his previous role as associate vice president for IT, Blackman was a key leader in the OneIT Initiative. This helped unify IT divisions at UNL, UNK, UNO, and Central Administration to better serve the university’s IT needs and reduce operational costs.

That effort saved $6 million and resulted in an organization that maximizes IT scale, service, and efficiencies across the NU system while maintaining a commitment to the missions and unique needs of each campus. Blackman first joined the UNO community in 1996 as an undergraduate student. His professional career also began at UNO in 1999, joining the staff as a technology coordinator. He went on to serve as NU technical lead for the statewide Nebraska Student Information System product selection process and UNO’s lead for implementation. He co-led UNO’s first campuswide website strategy and led implementation of the campus’ first Customer Relationship Management system for student recruitment. He was appointed CIO at UNO in 2016. In April 2017, Blackman was inducted into UNO’s chapter of Phi Kappa Phi honor society for exemplary commitment to supporting higher education.

CITATION FOR ALUMNI ACHIEVEMENT

Mark A. Martinez is receiving the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Alumni Association’s Citation for Alumni Achievement. An Omaha native, Martinez boasts a long and distinguished career in law enforcement. Martinez is a two-time UNO graduate as part of the UNO Goodrich Scholarship Program and has a BS (‘82) and MS (‘93) in criminal justice. He was a four-year letterman for the UNO baseball team and was named All-North Central Conference as a senior. He played on UNO’s 1979 and 1981 North Central Conference championship teams. After graduating, Martinez became a crime lab technician for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, then joined the Omaha Police Department (OPD), becoming a sergeant then a lieutenant. He became the first Latino with OPD to become a captain, then a deputy chief. Martinez retired in 2009.

Mark A. Martinez

DECEMBER 2019 COMMENCEMENT

In 2010, President Barack Obama appointed Martinez as the first Latino to the post of United States Marshal for the District of Nebraska. He concluded his career with the U.S Marshals Service in 2018.

Martinez volunteers at the Latino Center of the Midlands and the Omaha and Nebraska chapters of the National Latino Peace Officers Association. He currently serves on the boards of Crime Stoppers Omaha and Project Safe Neighborhood Subgrant Award Committee. He also is on UNO’s Goodrich Scholarship Program Alumni Advisory Board. He is a member of the South High School Hall of Fame, recipient of the National Latino Peace Officers Association Leadership Award, and alumni awards from UNO’s College of Public Affairs and Community Service and School of Criminology and Criminal Justice. Martinez and his wife of 35 years, Cyndi, have four children. Inaugurated in 1949, the Citation is the association’s highest honor. It encompasses career achievement, community service, involvement in business and professional associations, and fidelity to UNO. To date, it has been issued to 180 graduates.

STUDENT SPEAKER

Randy Hager is graduating with his Master of Science in counseling with a concentration in clinical mental health. Hager is a proud Maverick who appreciates the support of the entire faculty and staff in the College of Education who have encouraged him in his academic, personal, and professional goals. The rigors of the program encouraged an environment where peer support and personal growth occur in tandem with academic excellence. In addition to the support from UNO’s faculty and staff, Hager is deeply grateful for the immeasurable sacrifices and support from his wife and three daughters as well as numerous family and friends – many who are in attendance today or watching online.

Randy Hager

10

Hager was raised with his three brothers in Des Moines, Iowa and moved to Omaha over 20 years ago where he enjoyed a career in communications, primarily in the non-profit sector. As an audio-visual producer, Hager has helped support hundreds of services, concerts, and events in and around the Omaha area.

Hager graduated magna cum laude from Grace University with a Bachelor of Science degree in December 2015. He earned a double major in psychology and bible in two and one-half years while working full time. While attending graduate school at UNO, he served two years as a Division Chairperson on the Nebraska Counseling Association Board providing LGBTIQ resources to counselors across the state, served as a crisis counselor on a national crisis line, and became a Board-Certified Life Coach. Since completing his studies in August, Hager has acquired a Nebraska counseling license and was awarded the high distinction of being a National Certified Counselor. He has launched his own private practice which focuses on clients who have experienced trauma and the LGBTIQ population. Not only is Hager representing graduates today, he is also representing proud parents as one of his daughters is also graduating today.

SELECT UNO ACADEMIC HIGHLIGHTS College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) • CAS began offering the region’s first academic major in Medical Humanities to prepare graduates for careers in the health care industry. The major focuses on the humanistic aspects of medicine, which promotes patient-centered care and resilient professionals. The major is a partnership between UNO and UNMC. • Joe Biden, the 47th Vice President of the United States, presented prepared remarks to more than 300 at the Inaugural Chuck Hagel Forum in Global Leadership, an event sponsored and organized by CAS with support from University Communications. • From January through April 2019, the Sam and Frances Fried Holocaust and Genocide Academy partnered with Yahad-In Unum to present “Holocaust by Bullets: A Priest’s Journey to Uncover the Forgotten Aspects of the Holocaust.” This multi-media exhibit of eyewitness testimony to the shooting deaths of more than 1.5 million Eastern European Jews was a two-day workshop for educators. A keynote by Father Patrick Desbois, provided an extraordinary experience for hundreds in the community.

College of Education (COE) • The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE), invited faculty and administrators from COE to join the Reducing the Shortage of Special Education Teachers Networked Improvement Community (NIC). NIC examines and investigates issues in special education teacher recruitment and retention, including shortages and a lack of diversity in the field. • The Division of Biomechanics and Research Development celebrated its grand opening of the 30,000 square-foot expansion to the Biomechanics Research Building. The addition includes a 3D Printing Lab; Bioinspired Robotics Lab; new Virtual Reality Lab; an expanded Machine Shop; and an outreach and instruction space. • The BODYMODELS program held its second summer of interdisciplinary collaboration in July. Elementary school teachers, science leaders, along with Teacher Education and Biomechanics faculty, and UNO Noyce Scholars worked together to develop STEM and Biomechanics curriculum to roll out this fall in Omaha-area classrooms. • Metro Omaha Education Consortium (MOEC) led the charge for Metro Omaha to become Nebraska’s first member of the National Campaign for Grade Level Reading. MOEC also organized year-long, DECEMBER 2019 COMMENCEMENT

philanthropy-funded professional development for mathematics teachers in 12 school districts, two community colleges, and UNO.

College of Business Administration (CBA) • Work is now underway on a 44,000 squarefoot addition to Mammel Hall, home to CBA. The privately-funded project will add six new classrooms, four seminar rooms, an expanded Koraleski Commerce and Applied Behavioral Lab and a 180-person general purpose room. Construction is scheduled to be complete in late 2020. • In July, the University of Nebraska Board of Regents approved the formation of the School of Accounting, highlighting the growth and academic achievement of accounting programs in CBA. This program will administer UNO’s undergraduate accounting concentration courses and the Master of Accounting graduate degree program. • Founded in May 2019, the UNO Center for Professional Sales supports the university, sales students, and the Omaha community through a new Professional Selling concentration and minor; extracurricular activities; and opportunities that bring together faculty, students, business professionals, for-profit organizations, and non-profit organizations to develop skills and professional networks.

College of Public Affairs and Community Service (CPACS) • UNO’s Aviation Institute was one of four university aviation programs selected by Southwest Airlines for a pathway program that accelerates students into careers as pilots. Southwest will provide qualified students with internships and coaching to complement their education as the next generation of pilots. • U.S. News & World Report ranked the Criminology and Criminal Justice online master’s program No. 1 in the nation. Six other graduate programs in CPACS are also ranked among the Top 30 in their fields across the nation. • Every first-year student in the Goodrich Scholarship Program returned for their sophomore year in Fall 2018 — a 100% retention rate.

College of Information Science & Technology (IS&T) • IS&T established its 13th degree program, the Master of Science in IT Innovation, to help meet the critical need for more transformative technologists. The degree will help more entrepreneurs shape their ideas and solve problems with a technical solution.

• With software developed by IS&T faculty and students, IS&T is helping forensic anthropologists with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency identify the remains of fallen soldiers, giving their families closure. • For the past five years, IS&T faculty have led and/or participated in 399 external and internal grants and contracts totaling over $19 million.

College of Communication, Fine Arts and Media (CFAM) • A group of 18 UNO Theatre students traveled to Edinburgh, Scotland to perform an original play titled “Little Wars” at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The festival is the world’s largest festival of its kind, and provides the opportunity to perform in front of thousands, as well as see dozens of other theatre productions from all around the world. • The recently renovated and expanded Strauss Performing Arts Center, home of the School of the Arts, opened with much anticipation. The new 25,000-square-foot addition includes the John and Jan Christensen Recital Hall, practice rooms, and teaching spaces that include studios for the keyboard, brass, percussion, and technology areas as well as a recording studio. • MavForensics, UNO’s nationally-ranked competitive speech team, finished in the Top 10 in the nation for the 10th year in a row. The American Forensics Association National Individual Events Tournament (AFA-NIET) held its National Championships and the MavForensics earned sixth place nationally in 2019. Senior Ameres Groves also became just the eighth national champion in UNO history at the tournament.

Graduate Studies • Graduate Studies continues to increase its offerings for the modern student with almost 100 graduate programs at the doctoral, master’s, and certificate levels. These include dual degree program partnerships with UNMC and UNL, and additional programs offered through digital delivery. • Graduate students enrolled in multi-delivery courses increased by 10% from Fall 2018 to Fall 2019, emphasizing the growing demand for digital learning. • Within the past year, Graduate Studies awarded over $46,000 to support 94 master’s and doctoral students presenting at academic conferences around the country, showing a commitment to research and creative activity.
