WHAT IS AN EXCHANGE?

Exchange Basics

Exchange programs give students the opportunity to deeply engage with a new culture and experience life as a traditional international student. Students study at partner universities throughout the world while paying UNO tuition and earning UNO credit.

Why Exchange?

Exchanges provide you with the opportunity to study abroad at universities around the world, experience life in a new culture, and become integrated at an international campus. From the first day of orientation, exchange students have many opportunities to get involved, participate in new activities, and make new friends. Exchanges are also very affordable, making it possible for you to spend a semester or year abroad while paying the same UNO tuition rates you are used to. Some exchange semesters actually cost less than a semester living and studying at UNO!

How Exchange Placements Work

A phrase you will hear frequently when applying to an exchange program is ‘chance of placement.’ When universities like UNO join an exchange partnership, they agree to send and receive a set number of students through the exchange each year. This limits the amount of students that can study at each destination. Most exchanges offered through UNO have a very good chance of placement, though some of the most popular sites are more competitive.

2

Academics

When going abroad on exchange, you will find many options for taking courses taught in English and other languages. It’s important to have some flexibility in which courses you plan to take while on exchange. Courses can sometimes change or be cancelled due to low enrollment, just like at UNO. Make sure you pick out a few extra classes you’d like to take in the event that changes are made to the course offerings. When taking specific courses in your major or minor, you may need to be flexible with your destination.

Calendar Dates

When selecting an exchange program, take the term dates into consideration. Some countries do not follow the same semester start and end dates as the US university calendar. Please be mindful of calendar differences.

IS AN EXCHANGE PROGRAM RIGHT FOR ME? • I want an authentic experience as an international student when I study abroad • I am independent and want to increase my problem-solving skills • I feel comfortable navigating a new city and academic system without extensive assistance • I have UNO scholarships and want to apply them to help defray the cost of my program • I am seeking a longer, more immersive study abroad experience

If you agree with any of these statements, then the answer is YES!

TYPES OF EXCHANGE UNIVERSITY PARTNERSHIP

The University of Nebraska has an established relationship with another institution which provides reciprocal exchange opportunities. Some of UNO’s exchange partnerships have been ongoing for nearly forty years, while others have joined the family as recently as 2017.

MAUI-UTRECHT

The MAUI-Utrecht Network Exchange Program allows students from member universities to participate in exchange programs at other member institutions in Europe for a semester or academic year. MAUI-Utrecht schools are labeled by the icon shown in the ‘Quick Guides’ on page 4.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAMS (ISEP)

ISEP is a network of over 300 colleges and universities in more than 50 countries. As an ISEP member, UNO students can apply to be an exchange student in many locations throughout the world including Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East. ISEP exchange functions differently from UNO university partnerships and MAUI-Utrecht exchanges, so it is best to consult the Education Abroad Office for more details. A separate ISEP catalog can be picked up from UNO Education Abroad, and more information is available on the ISEP website.

UNIVERSITY PARTNERSHIP

While many universities have STEM options in English, these universities offer a significant selection.

You don’t need to be an undergraduate to study abroad! Many universities have exchanges available in English at the graduate level.

Options outside of ‘standard’ welltraveled study abroad locations offer a unique experience and are usually very affordable.

MAUI UTRECHT

MAUI-UTRECHT

Institutions labeled with this icon indicate membership in the MAUIUtrecht exchange network. Placement at these universities is shared with other midwestern network members.

These universities specialize in or have particular strengths in the field of business.

Languages may be taken at many universities, but these have programs particularly designed to increase your language proficiency.

Universities accompanied by the ‘O’ have an exchange agreement with UNO; an established relationship to facilitate exchange.

SUMMER PROGRAM

If you’re looking for something shorter than a semester, these universities offer summer programs. Some are exchange based while others charge their own program fees during the summer.

FUNDING & FINANCIAL SUPPORT

6

Financial Aid and UNO Tuition Scholarships

Exchange programs can be funded through most scholarships, grants, and loans offered through the Office of Financial Support and Scholarships at UNO, in addition to study abroad scholarships. On a University Partnership, MAUI-Utrecht, or ISEP exchange program, students pay tuition and fees to UNO rather than to their host university abroad. This allows students to have a tuition and fees bill in MavLINK that nearly all financial aid types recognize and contribute towards. The following financial aid is confirmed to be applicable to exchange programs: Nebraska Promise Deans Nebraska Legacy UNO Alumni Association Buffett/TLC Pell Grant MOHE Oman Alternative Loans

Regents Distinguished UNO Advantage Walter Scott, Jr. College Opportunity Nebraska Opportunity Grant Collegebound Nebraska Grant Employee and Dependent Scholarship

Chancellor’s UHOP Young Scholars Goodrich MAP Post-9/11 GI Bill Federal Loans

If you see a type of financial aid above that you receive, it is still best to confirm with your scholarship organization or the Office of Financial Support and Scholarships how your aid will apply. This includes asking if there are any special forms you must fill out, if the same costs are covered, and what amounts you’ll receive. If you receive scholarships or grants that are not on the list above, that does not mean they are ineligible. You simply need to connect with your scholarship organization or the Office of Financial Support and Scholarships at UNO to confirm if your aid can be applied to an exchange program. It’s important to point out when talking with scholarship organizations that you’ll be paying tuition in MavLINK to UNO, and not to a foreign university or organization. UNO’s Office of Financial Support and Scholarships is located in Eppley Administration Building Room 103. All students are encouraged to meet with a Financial Support Counselor to discuss funding as they prepare to study abroad.

UNO Education Abroad Scholarships Specific study abroad scholarships are often available through the Education Abroad Office. Please contact UNO Education Abroad for current scholarship offerings.

External Scholarships

There are many general study abroad scholarships available. Check with local clubs and organizations to see if they offer scholarships and look into your eligibility for these scholarship programs: NSEP Boren Scholarship Freeman-Asia Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship Phi Kappa Phi Scholarship DAAD Scholarship (Germany) STA Start the Adventure Scholarship JASSO (Japan) MEXT (Japan) Government of Korea Scholarship Norden Club Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) Donald Greer Study Abroad Memorial Scholarship

Stop by the Education Abroad Office to talk with a Peer Advisor. Our Peer Advisors can help with your initial questions and get you started on the path to study abroad. They can also share what their experience studying abroad was like, and schedule an appointment for you with the Education Abroad Advisor.

Create a profile in UNO’s Education Abroad application portal, called Via-TRM. Via-TRM is accessible through our website. There you’ll find additional program information and will later be able to apply for a program and receive scholarship announcements.

You’ll come in for your appointment with the Education Abroad Advisor. During this appointment, you’ll have the opportunity to take a more in-depth look at the program(s) you’re interested in and discover your next steps for making your study abroad happen. Come ready to ask questions!

8

4

5

6

Apply for your program in Via-TRM. Once you’ve filled out your application, hit the submit button to send it to UNO Education Abroad for review.

If all goes well, you’ll be approved by UNO for your program. If you apply for a university partnership exchange or a MAUI-Utrecht exchange, you’ll be nominated by UNO Education Abroad to study abroad at the university for which you applied and were approved.

Your exchange university approves the nomination. You will be notified of any forms the exchange university needs you to submit to finish processing your acceptance, enrollment, housing, etc. You will then move into the preparation phase after receiving your official acceptance letter from your exchange university!

EXCHANGE PARTNERS BY COUNTRY Are you ready to find your perfect exchange match? Take a look at our partners! Many of the exchange partners offer numerous courses in English (even when it’s not the country’s official language) and all are excellent universities where you can spend up to a year living and studying. Make sure you have read the ‘What is an Exchange?’ section, and look out for the Quick Guide references provided for each university. The exchanges that follow are university partners and members of the Mid-American Universities International and Utrecht (MAUI-Utrecht) Network. If you don’t see a location or university that works for you, don’t forget that you can apply for exchanges in the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP) network. DUAL DEGREES What is a Dual Degree?

A dual degree program is a unique format for obtaining two masters degrees in the time it normally takes to complete a single degree. Students spend their first year in the program taking courses at UNO, and then travel to a selected partner university to study for their second year. At the end of the program, the student receives a masters degree from both UNO and the international partner university.

What Dual Degree Programs are Offered? College of Information Science & Technology

Master of Science in Management Information Systems, UNO Master of Arts in Management, Communication, and Information Technology Management Center Innsbruck, Austria (Pg 11)

Master of Science in Management Information Systems, UNO Masters in Management Information Systems, Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany (Pg 24)

College of Business Administration

Master of Business Administration, UNO Master of Science in Business Economics, Ghent University, Belgium (Pg 13) OR Master of Science in Business Engineering, Ghent University, Belgium (Pg 13)

How does the Program Work?

Students apply for their graduate program at UNO first, and then are nominated to the partner school abroad as a dual degree candidate. Once accepted as a nominee, students must complete the partner school’s application process as well. Students pay tuition and fees for their degree program to UNO, and will not be required to pay any tuition at their international university. The UNO Education Abroad Office will assist with the student nomination, application, living arrangements through the host university, international insurance, and other pre-departure and on-site guidance. All courses in the dual degree programs are taught in the English language. For more details on dual degree programs at UNO, please contact UNO Education Abroad and the relevant college’s advising team.
