The Idea of a University A university is not bricks and mortar, not solely bricks and mortar. It is flesh and bone, dreams and reality, promise and fulfillment. Its totality is too broad for canvas, too elusive for print. It has moods and ages, like a person. Its seasons are all growing seasons and the harvests ever secure. A university is, above all, an experience. It exists in the hearts and minds of those who draw from its wisdom and add to its reputation. A university is a place, yes, but a place of the spirit. It is described, forever after, by its family, not as architecture, but as personality and precept and conversion. A university is what its alumni have become. They are its voice to the world. Some alumni achieve headlines, bear titles, manage corporations, represent constituents, build, create, publicize, minister, protect, teach. Some labor less conspicuously, contributing from the depths of their talents, fostering understanding, transmitting appreciation. They speak for us, our alumni. And they speak well. Robert T. Reilly, UNO Professor Emeritus

ACADEMIC REGALIA
History of Hood and Robe Identification of the hood and robe as academic apparel is believed to have originated at the English universities of Oxford and Cambridge during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The hoods are a carry-over from the times when monks, who operated these universities, wore them to protect their shaved heads in winter. The robe is an adaptation of the shoulder cape also worn by these same monks while collecting alms. Use of the academic robe came to the United States in 1754, with the founding of what is now Columbia University. In 1895, a commission of University officials adopted a universal code of design and color for the academic garb. This code has undergone several revisions in subsequent years. Styling of the robes varies for the bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees with the width of sleeve borders and length of the hood increasing with each advanced degree. Hoods are normally not used for bachelor’s degrees today. Instead, the tassel colors are used to indicate the degree program. All doctorate degree recipients are indicated by a gold tassel.
Omicron Delta Kappa Active student members of the UNO Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society, shall be recognized by the blue, white, and black honor cords, the official colors of the society.
Phi Kappa Phi Members of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s most selective all-discipline academic honor organization, shall be recognized by the navy blue and gold honor cords or stoles.
Pi Gamma Mu Blue and white cords with the blue tassels honor graduating members of Pi Gamma Mu, the International Honor Society in Social Science.
U.S. Military Veteran Red, white, and blue cords signify a U.S. military veteran.

STUDENT SPEAKERS
Rebecca Shively is graduating with a Doctorate in Industrial/ Organizational Psychology and received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UNO in 2006 and 2009, respectively. She chose UNO because the “phenomenal support from the faculty in the psychology department allowed me the freedom to pursue my research interests.” “I had great opportunities for teaching, research, and giving back to the community through service learning projects in the classroom. I really enjoyed the collaborative nature of our program and working with my fellow graduate students,” Rebecca said. Rebecca was very involved at UNO. During her undergraduate career, she played trumpet in the Marching Maverick Band and also participated in the University Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble. As a graduate student, she was involved in SIOP-UNO, the student organization for industrial/organizational psychology and was a tri-chair officer for two years.
Graduate Speaker Rebecca Shively
Her future plans include working as director of Education and Metrics for the Business Ethics Alliance where she will be developing and implementing curriculum and evaluation tools to promote business ethics throughout Omaha.
Michael Blakely is graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. His focus of study is marketing with an international business minor. He chose UNO “because of its uncontested reputation as not just being excellent academically, but for also being a staple within the city and community.” He believes being an alumnus not only sets him apart from the rest, it means he’s part of the Maverick family. “The opportunities UNO has provided me have dramatically changed my life and have given me all the tools necessary to lead a fulfilling and successful career path,” Michael said. Michael’s major accomplishments while attending UNO have been studying in eight countries with the Study Abroad program. Those countries include Italy, France, United Arab Emirates, Nepal, Thailand, China, Vietnam, and South Korea. During his study abroad experience in China, Michael was part of a student organization that welcomed foreign students to the university, which included showing them around and getting them acclimated to the campus. He currently serves as the senior director for Wellness and as the director of Campus Recreation. He received his master’s degree in Physical Education from UNO in 1982. Outside of the department, Joe has served as the Staff Advisory Council president, held one of three ombudsman positions on campus, served on a number of search committees, as well as participated in numerous standing University committees. The most rewarding undertaking for Joe has been the addition and renovation project of the HPER building, which was completed in 2010. CITATION FOR ALUMNI ACHIEVEMENT
Dr. Penny Sackett, a 1978 UNO graduate, is an internationally acclaimed physicist, astronomer and former chief scientist for Australia. In 2005, she was part of a global network of astronomers to discover the first known Earth-sized planet orbiting a normal star other than the Sun. Penny’s extensive career in higher education began at UNO, where she graduated summa cum laude with a degree in physics and was named an outstanding physics and mathematics student. She earned a master’s degree and doctorate in theoretical physics from the University of Pittsburgh, where she taught from 1978 to 1993. In 1995, Penny moved to the Netherlands and became an assistant professor at the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute at the University of Groningen. She began assembling a team of 73 astronomers from 12 countries — dubbed PLANET (Probing Lensing Anomalies NETwork) — that searched for planets by looking at the way gravity bends light. In 2005, the team discovered what then was the smallest planet detected outside our solar system.
Penny Sackett
In 2002, Penny moved to Australia to become director of the ANU School of Astronomy and Astrophysics, and of the Mount Stromlo and Siding Spring Observatories. Six months later, wildfires destroyed the world-famous, 78-year-old observatory and its five telescopes, causing $10 million in damage. Penny led the rebuilding, which included a new instrument and technology center. Her professional experience includes teaching, research administration and science journalism. In 2011, she was the keynote speaker at the biennial Adelaide Festival of Ideas on the theme of Uncertainty and Science. That same year she helped draft the Stockholm Memorandum released from the 3rd Nobel Laureate Symposium on Global Sustainability. She sits on the steering committee for the 4th Nobel Laureate Symposium, “Changing Climate, Changing Cities,” to be held October 2014 in Hong Kong. She lives in New South Wales and holds dual citizenship in Australia and the United States.
