FINANCIAL AID UNO’s premier graduate school education is offered at the most affordable tuition rates in the region and provides a multitude of funding sources for graduate students to help finance their education.

FEDERAL FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIPS

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the form the U.S. Department of Education requires to determine your financial aid eligibility. Students with financial need may be eligible for loans or work-study funding. The form is available starting October 1.

Graduate Assistantships are intended to award students who have demonstrated high academic performance and potential at the graduate level. Graduate Assistants, or “GAs,” work 20 hours each week and carry a minimum of six graduate hours each semester. In addition to tuition remission, GAs receive a monthly stipend and are eligible for medical benefits.

The duties of a GA could be teaching; instructing and supervising undergraduate level labs; grading or evaluating performance of undergraduate students; collecting and processing research data for faculty; or preparing presentation materials.

Graduate Scholarships Graduate Studies offers several scholarships for both residents and non-residents. To be eligible you must have completed nine or more graduate hours with a 3.75 GPA at the time of application.

TUITION-REDUCTION PROGRAMS Metropolitan Advantage Program The Metropolitan Advantage Program (MAP) offers residents or high school graduates of 11 Iowa counties the opportunity to attend UNO graduate programs at significantly reduced tuition rates that are lower than or competitive with four-year institutions in Iowa. Counties include Cass, Crawford, Fremont, Harrison, Mills, Monona, Montgomery, Page, Pottawattamie, Shelby, and Woodbury. Eligible UNO graduate students who are Iowa residents will pay 150 percent of resident tuition. The UNO reduced tuition is close to the rates charged by the University of Iowa, Iowa State, and the University of Northern Iowa.

Midwest Student Exchange Program The Midwest Student Exchange Program (MSEP) is a multi-state reciprocity program. Through the MSEP, public institutions agree to charge students no more than 150 percent of the in-state resident tuition rate for specific programs. Participating students will typically realize savings between $500 and $3,000 per semester. Eligible participants must be a legal resident of Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Ohio, or Wisconsin and enrolling as a non-resident student at a participating MSEP campus.

TUITION DUE DATES Tuition and fees for the fall, spring, and summer semesters are due in full on the due date. Bills are generated on the last business day of the month for unbilled or unpaid charges. Statements are generated via E-Bill and published on MavLINK. A billing notification is sent to your UNO email account when the bill is available online. Payments are due on the 23rd of the following month. See schedule below for specific dates. Semester

Late Payment Fees Each unpaid billing is subject to late payment fees. A maximum of four late payment fees can be assessed during a single semester. If you have not received your billing statement within five working days of the billing date, please contact UNO Cashiering and Student Accounts. Unpaid balances that remain outstanding will result in the placement of a hold on the account. This hold will prevent future registration and receipt of transcripts. Late Payment Fee Amounts • Balances $999.99 and under: $25.00 • Balances $1,000 and over: $50.00

OTHER PAYMENT OPTIONS Maverick Payment Plan UNO partners with Nelnet Campus Commerce to offer a payment plan for currently enrolled students. Students will have an option to pay their tuition and fees in three easy installments. To participate, students must log into MavLINK and select “Maverick Payment Plan” on the homepage.

Employer Reimbursement If your employer has a tuition reimbursement program that allows you to take classes and pays your tuition and/or fees after grades are posted, you may qualify for our Employer Reimbursement Deferred Payment Plan. Application deadlines are as follows: • Fall 2020: September 15 • Spring 2021: February 15 • Summer 2021: May 15 A $50 non-refundable application charge and any fees not covered by your employer must be paid by credit card upon acceptance of the application. Your remaining balance will be charged to this credit card 45 days after the end of the semester unless you pay the balance by other means prior to this date. Late payment fees are assessed only in the event you do not pay your balance and we must charge your card. You will be allowed to register for the next semester when enrollment begins even though your account has not yet been paid.

MANDATORY FEES AND OTHER CHARGES UNO has mandatory fees that go along with the cost of tuition. Mandatory student fees are defined as amounts which are directly assessed to all enrolled graduate and undergraduate students, are required to be paid with tuition, and are generally dedicated to specific purposes. On-campus student fees and online student fees will vary.

Other Charges You may charge the following to your student account and be billed in the same manner as your tuition and fees: Late or nonpayment will result in student account holds. • Up to $2,000/semester of books and supplies from the UNO Bookstore (apparel, food, and other bookstore items cannot be charged to your student account) • Online parking permits • Parking violations more than 30 days outstanding

GRADUATE STUDENT TRAVEL AWARDS Graduate students presenting at academic conferences are eligible to apply for travel awards. The maximum amount of an award is $500. Applications are reviewed at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters by the dean of Graduate Studies. GRADUATE STUDENT WORKSHOPS The Office of Graduate Studies collaborates each semester with various departments on campus to offer a variety of workshops focused on graduate students. Topics include citation tools, research techniques, presentation tips, and thesis and dissertation assistance. Thesis and dissertation workshops cover everything from the process of beginning, including where to find important forms, steps to take, pitfalls to avoid, and explanation on the required formatting, to uploading your final work prior to graduation.

WRITING CENTER

OFFICE OF RESEARCH AND CREATIVE ACTIVITY The Office of Research and Creative Activity (ORCA) supports faculty, staff, and students in their ongoing scholarly activities at UNO. ORCA provides leadership in the development of future research programs, creative collaborations, efforts in community engagement, and securing grants and partnerships that will advance knowledge, help realize economic and human potential, and serve the interests of society.

Graduate Research and Creative Activity (GRACA) A grant of up to $5,000 per student in support of faculty-mentored research or creative activity. All GRACA recipients must present at the Student Research and Creative Activity Fair.

University Committee on Research and Creative Activity (UCRCA) Funds up to $500 per graduate student for project-related materials, supplies, and operating costs related to the conduct of student research and creative activity. URCA is interdisciplinary and members represent each of the college and various departments across campus.

The UNO Writing Center offers free one-onones for writers on any subject at any stage of the writing process. We will discuss your writing, provide feedback, and coach you through the stages of writing your paper— from brainstorming to the finishing touches. Consultations last 30 or 60 minutes and can be done in-person or online. UNO Writing Center staff consists of undergraduate consultants, graduate teaching assistants, post graduate consultants, retired faculty members, volunteers, and interns.

March 26, 2021 Graduate students have the opportunity to showcase their research and creative activity in the form of oral presentations, performances, exhibits, and posters. Participation is welcome from students in all disciplines and all majors.

The Office of Graduate Studies and the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) fund a limited number of graduate consultants on our staff. These consultants have more experience consulting with master’s and doctoral level writing projects and are identified by an * next to their names in the online schedule.

Document Delivery is when the ILL department scans chapters, journal articles, and other materials owned by the Criss Library and uploads them to your ILLiad account to be viewed as PDFs on your computer. Document Delivery is requested the same way as ILL.

LIBRARY SPACES Graduate Study Carrels Fifty two-person study carrels are available to UNO graduate students to facilitate scholarly research using library resources. Each carrel has two overhead locking bin spaces, a data port, one chair, and one shared locking file drawer. Carrels are assigned on a per-semester basis, and eligible users may renew them for subsequent semesters. Eligible Users Currently enrolled graduate students in good standing in their respective schools are eligible to apply for a study carrel. Students are prioritized in the following order: Ph.D. candidates, master’s students, and then Honors students. Graduate assistants who have office space available to them are not eligible for these carrels. How to Apply Applications are available at the Main Service Desk or online. Applications may be submitted at any time during the year. For full consideration, return the form before the beginning of the desired semester. Completed applications should be submitted to the Main Service Desk.

CREATIVE PRODUCTION LAB The UNO Creative Production Lab located within Criss Library is a place where patrons can receive one-on-one help to explore their creative interests and learn how to use cutting- edge hardware and software.

KANEKO-UNO LIBRARY The unique partnership between KANEKO and UNO has resulted in a space unlike any other; the KANEKO-UNO Creativity Library is a space that provides resources and is focused on the stimulation and growth of creativity.

Study Rooms Individual Study – 14 Total Rooms (3 hours max time) All rooms have a desk, chair, whiteboard, and network connection. Group Study/Meeting – 15 Total Rooms (3 hours max time) All rooms are equipped with whiteboards, solstice pods, and a multiuser wireless connectivity solution that syncs to your own devices.

Sustainable commuting options for getting around campus and the community offer students unique and inexpensive transportation.

Campus Shuttles UNO shuttles connect Dodge and Scott Campuses, eliminating the need to purchase a parking permit or drive back and forth between campuses. Scott Campus is also within walking distance of Aksarben Village, an entertainment community full of shops, restaurants, bars, bike trails, and green spaces. During fall/spring semesters, the shuttles operate as Express (Pointto-Point) Routes. In summer months, the shuttles operate on one circulating route that stops at multiple locations. GPS tracking is available on the UNOmaha App and has live location data for every bus currently on route and provides estimated time of arrival for each stop.

MavRIDE MavRIDE offers free rides on the Metro bus system to current students, faculty, and staff. Your MavCARD is automatically activated with the bus pass and can be used any time on any route. MavRIDE must only be used by the MavCARD holder.

B-Cycle B-Cycle is a unique bike-sharing program that allows those who pay the minimal fee to easily ride a B-Cycle bike from one station to another. UNO has five stations on Dodge and Scott Campuses.

SERVICES PARKING SERVICES A valid virtual permit is required to park on UNO campuses. UNO offers hourly, daily, semester, and annual permits for all individuals needing to park on campus. Pricing can be found online. Permits must be purchased online through MavPARK. Permits are billed in the same manner as tuition and fees. The purchase of a permit does not guarantee a place to park. To purchase a permit, you will need your NetID and password, as well as the make, model, color, and license plate number of your vehicle(s). If you do not have a plate number, contact Parking Services to enter the VIN. Once plates have been added they will need to be registered. Parking Services will not read the VIN if the vehicle has plates. You may have more than one vehicle linked to your permit online, but only one vehicle may be parked on campus at a time.

CHILD CARE SERVICES The UNO Child Care Center (UNOCCC) provides high-quality, on-campus child care and early education services for families. The UNOCCC offers both full-time and part-time care on a contracted basis for children 18 months through five years during the academic school year and 18 months to 12 years during the summer. To qualify for student/faculty/staff child care tuition rates as a student, you need to be enrolled for a one credit hour class at UNO.

Public Safety Public Safety provides service to the UNO campus community 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
