TLC MAKES SURE YOU HAVE ACCESS TO ALL THE TOOLS YOU NEED TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS. As a recipient of the Susan T. Buffett scholarship, Esmerelda Chavez not only got the opportunity to attend UNO, but gained support by joining UNO’s Thompson Learning Community (TLC). “TLC is a community where they accept you for who you are. They truly want to see you succeed and will genuinely help you get there,” Esmeralda said. Through her connections in TLC, Esmeralda got the opportunity to expand her Psychology major by becoming a Teaching Assistant (TA) for a child psychology course. This allowed her to become more involved in the department. “I have made long time connections not only with peers but also the faculty,” she said. Esmeralda also has a mentor at UNO who has become a role model and helps her achieve her goals, no matter what they may be. “They will literally help you with anything even if it doesn’t have much to do with college,” she said. “They make sure my peers and I are taken care of on all aspects of life.”

LIVING IN OMAHA HAS NOT ONLY MADE ME A MORE EDUCATED STUDENT, BUT A MORE CULTURED AND WELL-ROUNDED PERSON AS WELL. Jarod Cernousek toured a lot of schools but felt UNO was the obvious choice because of its connection to the city. Originally from a small, rural town three hours away, he knew Omaha would be a big change, but a good one. “I wanted to go to a big city so I could spread my wings with new opportunities and adventures and Omaha has delivered on that,” he said. Jarod spends a lot of time in Elmwood Park and Aksarben, which are within walking distance from campus. He also loves going to the Old Market with friends on the weekends to check out different shops and restaurants. Being an acting major, he loves theatre and enjoys Film Streams and the Dundee Theater who offer free student nights.

UNO HAD SO MANY RESOURCES THAT MADE ME REALIZE I WAS GOING TO BE ABLE TO FIND WHATEVER I NEEDED HERE. Angela Lopera, a first-generation college student, started her academic journey at Metropolitan Community College (MCC). From the beginning, she knew she wanted to attend UNO after earning an associate’s degree. “Everyone that I met on campus was friendly and helpful,” she said. “I thought the campus was beautiful and large, but still felt like home. Angela said that the transferring process couldn’t have been easier. She said any student considering transferring should know the transition is easy. “They made me feel welcomed, answered all my questions and even gave me information they thought someday I would need to have a great experience on campus. I feel comfortable and happy knowing that I made the right choice.”

HOW DID UNO HELP PROVIDE YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND COLLEGE? Paying for college was an issue for my parents, but because of the Goodrich scholarship, I was able to go to UNO. I remember the day I got the letter and it said I got the scholarship. I jumped so high and I was crying because I could finally go to college! A DEMIR T OR R E S; COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

WE ARE INDEPENDENT THINKERS. EXPLORERS. RISK TAKERS. WE ARE MAVERICKS. When you become a part of UNO, you make the deliberate choice to be a Maverick and to embrace all the possibilities the name implies. Mavericks are independent thinkers. Explorers. Risk takers. We are willing to go against the grain; ask the hard questions; and look at challenges in a different way. We collaborate. We serve. We represent. We grow. We are doing things that people said would never happen. We are loud. We are proud. We are Mavericks. And you are welcome here.
