A ONE-OF-A-KIND OPPORTUNITY UNOH MOTORSPORTS TEAM PUTS STUDENTS IN THE ACTION

The University of Northwestern Ohio High Performance Motorsports Team began in 2006 with one stock car. It soon added another stock car, and then entered UMP modified racing. Now part of the team will leave the dirt and head for the asphalt. Nine seasons later, UNOH boasts a stable of five stock cars and five modifieds to race on dirt tracks, and a newly formed drag racing team, which will race a Chevrolet V-8 powered S-15, a Ford-powered Cougar and Super Comp dragster. It has been a monumental expansion, a fact not lost on UNOH President Dr. Jeffrey A. Jarvis. “I’m obviously surprised and pleased,” Jarvis said. “It’s grown to where these young people get the opportunity to be hands-on in all aspects of auto racing with every level, setting the cars up, repairing the cars, being crew chiefs and drivers. The ultimate goal is it leads to employment in their chosen career path, which is high performance auto racing.” The Motorsports Team was started as an outgrowth of the High Performance Automotive program at UNOH, which began in 1991. At first, students were given access to cars and Limaland Motorsports Park, a nearby quarter-mile dirt track owned by the University, on non-racing nights to gain firsthand experience. Eventually, the students raced with the regular weekly competitors at Limaland. Now they race all around the country, including such legendary tracks as Eldora Speedway in Ohio, I-55 Raceway in Missouri and Volusia Speedway Park in Florida. New to UNOH is the drag racing team, which started as the drag racing club. There are 22 students on the team, under the guidance of four faculty-coaches. The drag racing team will appear in bracket races throughout Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and Kentucky. The operations of the motorsports team moved to the new S&S Volvo High Performance Motorsports Complex in the fall of 2012. The new complex has enough room to house the entire modified, stock car and drag racing teams, including bays to work on cars, a machine shop, fabrication shop and sheet metal shop. It also has offices for coaches and team managers, and meeting spaces. “It made sense to me to be the first university or college in the world to have a High Performance Motorsports Athletic team, just like basketball, volleyball, baseball, tennis and golf,” Jarvis said. “It made sense to me to give students scholarships, just like our other teams, to be on our motorsports team.”

4 I UNOH RACERS

The dirt-track teams are entirely crewed by UNOH students, from the crew chief to the crew members. The cars are driven by students as well; tryouts are held each April for a new roster of drivers. The modified drivers will stay with their cars throughout the season while the stock drivers will rotate. The students are guided by a group of six coaches, headed by eighth-year Head Coach Paul Higgins, the High Performance Department Division Head. The drag racing team is crewed by students as well; and while the Cougar and S-15 will be piloted by students, the dragster will be driven by a faculty member until students can gain more experience. “It’s been a great opportunity for the students, and I think it’s a great opportunity for the university to see what the students can do when they’re supported on a professional level,” Higgins said. “Each year, we keep getting better and the wins are coming,” he added. “We work toward it and they will come. Each year we learn things. Every individual on the team, even the coaches, all learn. Those things you learn, you carry them onto the future seasons and help you become sharper that next year.” The dirt-track teams race weekly at Limaland, mixing in a few races at other Ohio tracks throughout the season. They travel to Volusia, Florida, every February for the UNOH DIRTcar Nationals presented by Summit Racing Equipment. The High Performance program, and specifically the Motorsports Team, has placed graduates in all levels of professional motorsports, from NASCAR Sprint Cup, Nationwide Series and Camping World Trucks to NHRA and ARCA to the World of Outlaws and All-Star Circuit of Champions. Some have even decided to field their own teams and compete weekly at tracks such as Limaland. “Other than water, other than boat racing, we have graduates in all of those areas,” Jarvis said. “The opportunity is there if a young person wants to put in the time and effort, and he or she has the abilities, individuals can attain their dream in motorsports.” You can find more information about the University of Northwestern Ohio at www.unoh.edu or by calling 419-998-3120. LIMALAND MOTORSPORTS PARK GIVES UNOH STUDENTS RARE OPPORTUNITES Steeped in tradition and history, Limaland Motorsports Park is a highbanked quarter-mile dirt track in Lima, Ohio. Racing of some sort has been occurring on the site for nearly 80 years.

Limaland is also the home track of the UNOH Motorsports Team, which races stocks and UMP modifieds with fully student crewed and driven teams.

The track has seen a renaissance since 1998 when the University of Northwestern Ohio purchased the track, less than four miles from campus. The University started a High Performance Automotive program in 1991 and needed a place for the students to gain real, firsthand experience in the field.

“Limaland is a great asset to the team,” Motorsports Head Coach Paul Higgins said. “We don’t go out and practice; that would be an unfair advantage. The only time we’re on the track is when we hold driver tryouts before the season even starts and then on the race nights, just like any other individual.

“We needed to have a facility where the students could be hands-on with the cars after they’d been on the track,” UNOH President Jeffrey A. Jarvis said. “That’s what separates our students from anyone else; they’ve had those hands-on educational opportunities at UNOH, and then they use that in their internships and employment.”

“They don’t give us any favoritism or hardship because we are backed by the University at a track that is ultimately owned by the University,” Higgins said. “We have to compete in the level everyone else does, the same rules, regulations.”

Limaland is a proud member of the NASCAR Home Track program, the The track hosts weekly racing on Friday evenings from April through first dirt track in Ohio to be recognized. You can find more information on August, with point racing for Stock Cars, UMP Modifieds and 360 Winged the track at www.limaland.com. Sprint Cars. Highlights on the schedule include visits from the Sunoco American Late Model Series, the penultimate stop on All-Star Circuit of Champions Ohio Sprint Speedweek and the World of Outlaws Sprint Cars SPORTSWEAR in the Brad Doty Classic.
