2012 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL I 3
“The Lady Racers are looking forward to an exciting 2012-13 basketball season. We lost two seniors to graduation, including All-American Amanda Francis who was a four year starter and the school’s all-time leading scorer. However, eight new players are joining the UNOH Lady Racers this season, six freshman and two transfer players. “We have three returning starters and three players who saw significant action last season. Senior Shaye Warman, a preseason All-WHAC selection, leads the returners back after averaging 13.4 points last season. Junior Becca Puckett is returning and averaged 9.8 points last season. Senior Angie Cates rounds out the returning starters after averaging 6.5 points per game. “Senior Saige Meyer and sophomores Sammi Dervisevic and Lauren Hopfner are expected to be major contributors to this year’s team. We are excited about the young new talent coming into our program. We expect these players to step in and blend with the returning players. We had many players stay on campus last summer and put in the work to make us a better basketball team. “We were very excited with how our 2011-12 season finished with a winning record and a tie for third place in the WHAC. Our goal is to build on last season, work hard, play enthusiastically and have fun. If and when those components happen, we feel we will be in every game.”

“We have basically assembled a brand new team this year. The only carry-overs from last year’s team are starting point guard Johnny Elliott, back-up forward Jon Slagle and back-up center Aaron Toney. All three of these players have really improved their games during the off-season. “As a coaching staff, we felt we needed to change the climate this year due to last year’s dismal season. We brought in several local high school standouts and mixed them with some talented junior college players. We are very optimistic about the up-side of this year’s group of players because we feel we have bettered ourselves at every position during the off-season recruiting period.”

University of Northwestern Ohio Athletics Hall of Fame
Beginning in 2007, the University of Northwestern Ohio has annually inducted a new class into its Athletics Hall of Fame, honoring those who helped make UNOH Athletics what it is and continues to become. The classes honor both contributions to UNOH and Northwestern Business College, the institution’s name while athletics were in play before the mid-1980s. The first inductee to the Hall of Fame was former basketball player and coach Dennis Elwer, who continues to serve the University as the Director of Athletic Alumni Relations. The second class included Larry Blain, who was the University comptroller and continues his long-held duties as the official scorer for volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball. The next class of UNOH Athletics Hall of Fame members will be introduced January 12, 2013, when the UNOH basketball teams host Marygrove College.
