NONPROFIT Leadership Alliance


About Us The Nonprofit Leadership Alliance (NLA) is a coalition of colleges, universities, and nonprofit organizations devoted to preparing, educating and certifying college students to excel in nonprofit careers. UNO is one of only 30 campus affiliates offering the Certified Nonprofit Professional (CNP) credential. The program is open to all undergraduate students, pursuing any major, and is housed in the School of Public Administration, within the College of Public Affairs and Community Service.

10 Competencies Ten competencies are required in addition to the three required classes. Competencies can be fulfilled by additional coursework, experience derived from an approved internship, leadership positions, volunteer experience, professional seminars, etc. The expectation is for you to demonstrate at least two examples of how you have fulfilled each competency before graduation.


Competency 1: Communication, Marketing & Public Relations Highlights knowledge, attitudes and activities that nonprofit organizations use to understand, inform, and influence their various constituencies. Competency 2: Cultural Competency & Diversity Highlights the development of cultural competency preparation for professional practice in culturally diverse settings. Competency 3: Finanacial Resource Development & Management Highlights financial resource acquisition, budgeting, financial management, control, and transparency in nonprofit organizations. Competency 4: Foundations & Management of the Nonprofit Sector Highlights the history, contributions, and unique characteristics of the nonprofit sector and its management. Competency 5: Governance, Leadership & Advocacy Highlights the stewardship and advocacy roles, responsibilities, and leadership for the board of directors, staff, and volunteers in the development of policies, procedures, and processes by which nonprofits operate and are held accountable.


Competency 6: Legal & Ethical Decision Making Highlights basic laws, regulations, and professional standards that govern nonprofit sector operations, including a basic knowledge of risk and crisis management, ethics, and decision making. Competency 7: Personal & Professional Development Highlights the nature of employment in the nonprofit sector, from researching career opportunities, applying and interviewing for a job, to continuing professional development. Competency 8: Program Development Highlights program design, implementation, and evaluation strategies applicable to all nonprofits (youth services, arts, environment, health, recreation, social services, advocacy, etc.) Competency 9: Volunteer & Human Resource Management Highlights the knowledge, skills, and techniques for managing volunteer and paid staff. Competency 10: Future of the Nonprofit Sector Highlights the dynamic nature of the nonprofit sector, the importance of continuous improvement, emerging trends and innovations, and the critical role research plays in shaping best practices.



Internships Students pursuing the Certified Nonprofit Professional (CNP) credential are required to complete a 300-hour internship at a nonprofit organization. Students must contact the NLA Advisor for internship approval prior to starting to work.

AMI Conference Students planning to earn their CNP credential must also attend at least one Alliance Management Institute (AMI) Conference before graduation. The conference typically takes place in January, and recurs every year.


On campus

Involvement Students pursuing the Certified Nonprofit Professional (CNP) credential are required to participate in the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance at UNO (NLA at UNO) student organization. Participation may range from being a member-at-large, to an officer role on the Executive Board.
