Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Ms. Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and VicePresident of the European Commission

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Ms. Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission. The Secretary-General expressed appreciation for the EU-UN partnership and the EU's increasing global leadership, including as chair of the Iran nuclear negotiations and within the Quartet on the Middle East.

The Secretary-General commended the collective decision by EU Member States to achieve the 0.7 % of the Gross National Income as their official development assistance target, commending Ms. Mogherini for her strong leadership in creating the conditions to achieve this agreement. He noted that this decision comes at a pivotal time ahead of the Financing for Development Conference to be held in July in Addis Ababa and the post-2015 development agenda summit in September in New York.

The Secretary-General welcomed a proposal by the European Commission for the relocation of 40,000 asylum-seekers as a step in the right direction and expressed hope it will be accepted by EU Member States.

The Secretary-General and Ms. Mogherini also exchanged views on the developments and perspectives of peace processes in Ukraine, Yemen and Burundi.
