Health, education and science centre opens at Yeovil College
by Faith Eckersall
Yeovil College’s £3m state-of-the-art Health, Education and Science Centre has been formally opened by local MP Marcus Fysh.
He was joined by Mayor of Yeovil Cllr Evie PottsJones at the centre, which provides T Level, A Level, and Further and Higher education students with facilities including a hospital ward, birthing and nursing stations and a community care setting. There are also therapy rooms, early years and primary settings as well as multiple science laboratories and flexible learning environments.
Yeovil College said the real-life, working environments will enable students to gain practical and high-quality experiences in spaces that reflect the settings in which they will begin their careers. “They will receive a real understanding of what skills and behaviours they need to be successful in their future career,” said CEO and Principal Mark Bolton.
He described the opening of the centre at Yeovil, which is one of only 16 colleges in the UK to receive a share of the government’s £1.5bn FE capital transformation fund, as a ‘significant milestone’ in the college’s journey to becoming a campus of the future.
“This is the first of many grand openings as we deliver the extent of our full ambition for our community and students,” he said. “The building has received an investment of around £3m, making it one of the largest and most prestigious Health, Education and Science centres in the UK.”
Marcus Fysh said: “It is a tremendous facility, which is second to none, and this is exactly the sort of aspiration we should have for our town and for the whole of the South West. It is incredible to see Yeovil College leading the way, both academically and aspirationally.”

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU DIE WITHOUT A WILL?
Laura Edwards a Solicitor in our Parkstone offi ce explains about intestacy.
Approximately 54% of UK adults have not made a Will. If you die without a will, your estate will be administered in accordance with the laws of intestacy.
WHAT ARE THE INTESTACY LAWS?
If the deceased has a spouse/civil partner but no children then the spouse/civil partner inherits everything.
If the deceased has a spouse/civil partner and children, the spouse/civil partner is entitled to all personal possessions and a legacy of £270,000. They are also entitled to half of the remaining residuary estate. The other half is held for the deceased’s children.
If there is no spouse or civil partner, the estate is distributed to children / grandchildren /great-grandchildren. Otherwise the estate passes to parents equally.
If there are no parents, the extended family ie siblings, blood relatives and half-blood relatives are considered.
If there is no family, the estate passes to the Crown.
HOW DO I KNOW WHO THE FAMILY ARE? I have acted on a lot of intestate estates. These are often complicated where there is no close family.
In some cases, the individuals entitled to the estate may not even know the deceased. In cases such as these, there may be many potential benefi ciaries. It is always recommended to instruct a professional agency to produce a family tree to ensure that no benefi ciaries are missed.
WHO ADMINISTERS THE ESTATE?
Where a person died intestate, a personal representative must apply to the Probate Registry for Letters of Administration. This is the legal document that gives authority to administer the estate. Without this, there is no authority to start collecting in assets or settling debts. The personal representative is often one of the people entitled to benefi t from the estate under the intestacy rules. It is possible to have more than one personal representative.
Administering an intestate estate is often more complicated. Sometimes, it is not clear who has the authority to act. If you require professional advice, please contact Laura Edwards in Parkstone on 01202 715815.
