Applications for £500 Young Farmer Bursary are open now!
Applications for the Cornish Mutual Young Farmer Bursaries are now open to students studying level 1-3 agriculture-based courses at colleges in the South West.
Four £500 bursaries are available to students enrolled in the 2022-2023 academic year at Kingston Maurward College, Bicton College, Bridgwater and Taunton College (Cannington Campus) or Duchy College. One bursary will be awarded per college, and it can be used for any course-related costs.
“We’re delighted to be offering our Young Farmer Bursaries again,” says Peter Beaumont, Managing Director for Cornish Mutual. “Supporting the next generation of farmers is a key part of our Future Farming Programme.”
Enya McMullan, a Level 2 Stockperson Apprentice at Kingston Maurward College, received a Young Farmer Bursary last year: “Farming is my passion and future career choice. I’m keen to gain wider experience so I plan to use the bursary to cover travel expenses for visits to other local farms, including both sheep and pig businesses.”
To apply, students should submit either a 500-word essay, 20-image photo essay, or 2- minute video or podcast answering the question ‘Why I want to be part of British agriculture’.
Entries should be sent by email to futurefarming@ cornishmutual.co.uk by 14th October 2022.

All the cattle are on the pastures
by Ruth Kimber
All the first cut silage is safely in – it was a tormenting time with the catchy weather, rain then sun. The crop was pleasing in quality and quantity in the main.
All the cattle now out on the pastures, changing the farm routine from feeding, cleaning out and bedding up, to checking the cattle and making sure they have enough grass and that no gates are left open or fences breached.
The maize has popped its heads up, so we are on track for the animals' winter feed.
We had a hot air balloon fly very low over the farmyard and fields – it actually landed in our neighbours’ field. We don’t mind balloons coming over but the cattle can get spooked, so it's important to check on them after a visit!
We were given tickets for the Chelsea Flower Show as a Christmas present – it was a super day.
Among the exhibits was a Government stand – the Animal & Plant Health Agency warning people not to bring in any plants or plant materiel from abroad.
There are so many problems with our native plants and trees. Seeds, bugs and disease can come unintentionally on plants and cuttings.
There have been tree viruses from overseas – Larch, Chestnut and Ash are in real trouble. Then there’s invasive plants like Japanese knotweed and Himalayan Balsam. Also, we have insects, Colorado beetle, processionary caterpillars, which are very toxic, and many more.
So please don’t be tempted to bring back from your holidays ANY plant material – and it's

ILLEGAL.
The first of our day-old turkeys have arrived! Just 100 to start with – we are growing these especially for Thanksgiving and early December trade.
Prices are still all over the place – it's really difficult to budget for anything, whether the farm or shop.
The costs are going up faster than the resulting products. The milk cheque is all spent before it hits the bank!
Cows are in short supply and very dear. Many dairy herds have been sold, lots of the larger herds have gone.
It's not just dairy cows that are short but beef also. I can never remember such strange times.

Have you seen the world through a cow’s eyes?
Alice Miller BVSC DBR MRCVS Friars Moor Livestock Health
As well as working as a full-time farm vet, I am also a member on the board of directors for BCVA (The British Cattle Veterinary Association).
I love my day-to-day clinical role working with farmers and their animals but it has also been refreshing to take on a new challenge carrying out my responsibilities for the BCVA.
Part of the role is to represent the views of our vet members to the wider livestock industry, which can result in policy changes and implementing new ideas.
We also run courses and conferences for our members. The cattle vet world is relatively small, so there is a good community of vets within the BCVA who all get to know one another and come together to share knowledge and, importantly, socialise!
I am currently working at The BCVA’s Young Vet Conference – sadly having qualified in 2009 I no longer qualify as a ‘young vet’ anymore! But in chairing the sessions I enjoyed sitting in on many of the lectures, before running my calving workshop.
One of the lectures was given by the world-renowned Miriam Parker who presented a brilliant interactive session on cow behaviour.
Miriam told us how she worked with a charity for blind people, which makes simulation goggles to mimic visual impairments.
They worked together to specifically create a set of goggles to represent what a cow sees.
When learning about cattle handling you can really appreciate life from their perspective when you see it through their eyes.
Contrary to belief, cows do not see in black and white but instead see yellow, blue and green.
It comes in handy when spotting the luscious grass to eat but you may then wonder why bulls are thought to charge at a red flag? It is not actually to do with the colour – they react to the movement and flapping.
Also, they have binocular vision, directly in front of them, with good depth perception but only for a limited area (a 25-50-degree arc).
Their monocular vision spans all around them, apart from a blind area directly behind them, and because of this blind spot they have no depth perception in the entire peripheral area. As a result, they struggle to see clearly all around them.
They are much more likely to see something if it moves, and to help themselves they put their heads down to see things and need to move slowly to visualise things properly.
A volunteer was plucked out of the audience and instructed to find their way across the room wearing Miriam’s goggles.
They were asked to walk in a straight line, without putting their arms out in front of them.
They managed it but what was remarkable was how quickly the person then seemed to adopt apparent cow behaviour. Unknowingly, she mimicked the way cows lower their heads, move their heads from side to side and proceed very slowly to find their way.
Being transported to a cow’s world means we could then go on to further understand cow behaviour and what handling methods and which systems work most effectively in keeping the cow happy and the handler safe.
Cows do not see in black and white – they see yellow, blue and green.
