• On Friday 22 April at 7pm at Guggleton Farm Arts (Station Road, Stalbridge, DT10 2RQ), auctioneer Gordon Brockman (as seen on Antiques Road Trip and Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is) will be overseeing the sale of many donated works of art in a bid to raise funds for the relief of those suffering the consequences of the Russian war in Ukraine.

Guggleton has been delighted by the response from the artistic community to their ‘shout-out’ for donations. There will be a wide variety of work on offer directly from their studios. Original oil paintings, drawings, watercolours, photographs and sculpture will be up for grabs from 80 of the region’s most appreciated artists including Day Bowman, Matthew Hayward, Patricia Burns and Rachel Sargent. Also on offer will be items donated by members of the public from their personal collections, including three prints by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

This is a great opportunity to indulge your passion for art while helping a worthy cause, and there will no doubt be some great bargains to be had! Tickets for seats at the sale, which are free, can be reserved at www.citizenticket. co.uk/events/guggleton-farmarts/art-auction-for-ukraine

The auction will be available at www. guggletonfarmartsauctions. com for a week prior to the sale for pre-bidding, or for anyone who cannot make it on the night. Any items that do not sell on the evening will also be available to bid on for another week after the sale. Online bidding pre-sale will be suspended 24 hours prior to the auction.

All proceeds from the sale will go to the Disasters Emergency Committee Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal, recommended by The Guardian as the most effective place to send funds from the UK. For further information please contact Vins Carey on 07770 476160

• Tickets are now on sale for Rock for Ukraine (Westlands Entertainment Venue, Friday 22 April, doors at 7.30pm), an event that will mark solidarity and support for the humanitarian and emergency response work in Ukraine and neighbouring countries affected by the refugee crisis.

The event will be raising funds for School in a Bag’s Ukraine Crisis Appeal and the Disasters Emergency Committee’s Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. All ticket proceeds will go towards both of the charities, as will bar sales, and many of the theatre staff working the event have offered to donate their time too.

Rock for Ukraine gives you the opportunity to also show solidarity with Ukraine through the power of live music at a stand-up event. Acts for the evening will include Bad Cowboys, IOU’s, Snakebyte and DJ Frazer Mitchell.

Adam Burgan, Arts & Entertainment Venues Manager, said: “Since the invasion of Ukraine began, I think we have all been horrified by images and stories filling our news feeds and screens and feeling somewhat helpless at what we can do. Stories soon came through of multiple humanitarian aid runs leaving the South West. Something we can do is help raise awareness, show our support and raise much-needed funds that reach those in need and displaced by the current situation in Ukraine.”

The event is ‘pay what you can’, with a suggested ticket fee of £15. However you can also choose £10, £20 or £25 options.

Book tickets for Rock for Ukraine at westlandsyeovil. co.uk or call the Box Office on 01935 422884. You can also book tickets through the Box Office in person when it’s open.

• In the folk-drama Mr Hardy’s Words take Wing (7.30pm on Thursday 28 April at Cecil Memorial Hall, Water Street, Cranborne BH21 5PZ), the musicians and actors of the group Wyvern take you on a journey back to the 19th-century Wessex of fated characters and mysterious landscape. Magazines and newspaper articles that author Thomas Hardy recorded in his ‘Facts’ notebooks were transformed by him – using both factual and apocryphal sources as the base for his own towering imagination – to become part of his literary canon. These extracts, presented by Wyvern, with local traditional songs and tunes, bring to life Hardy’s inspiration.

The ancient Saxon kingdom of Wessex is Hardy’s geographical map, and its people are those on whom he based his characters. The warp and weft of life for ordinary folk is woven into his writing with sharp observation and a keen comic eye. Words take wing under the pen of the novelist. Specific images form in poems, comic or tragic incidents direct his novels, historical and social themes suffuse short stories.

Wessex is a landscape criss-crossed by anecdotes, traditions and old beliefs, its region stretching from Cornwall’s coasts, past plains and heath-lands to the great cities of Winchester and Oxford; in the 19th-century a place of poverty and distress as much as an opportunity for advancement or happiness. The ancient symbol of the Wessex region is the dragonlike Wyvern.

Words take Wing follows Thomas Hardy’s ‘Facts’ notebook entries as they are absorbed into his writing; they can be uplifting, sadly nostalgic, informative or imaginatively comic - always observant and quirky. Join Wyvern’s harpist Sarah Deere-Jones leading the musicians and Martin Stephen voicing Mr Hardy as the group recount stories from and of Wessex, granted immortality by Thomas Hardy, enhanced by music, song and a backdrop of beautiful images of his world.

Green-fingered delights at the 20th Yarlington Plant Fair

The Count and Countess Charles de Salis held the very first Yarlington Plant Fair in the courtyard of their beautiful home in 2002, and have been fundraising for local good causes every year since (bar Covid-ridden 2020).

Now in its 20th year, this is not just any old plant sale – specialist growers and dealers from all over the South West bring with them rare and unusual plants. The Yarlington House stall is also a big draw and is stocked with home-germinated and grown-on plants – many interesting and unusual flowering annuals and perennials, as well as numerous vegetable varieties.

The fair is an annual highlight for keen gardeners and also provides a special day out for garden enthusiasts. There is the chance to explore the beautiful flower garden and walled kitchen garden, which will both be open to visitors on the day of the fair. The Count and Countess have lived at Yarlington House since 1961, and have developed the gardens over that time – introducing, among other things, a ha-ha, a sunken garden, hedges-on-stilts and, most recently, a beautiful wildflower meadow. The result is a beautiful combination of formal and informal areas. The walled kitchen garden is a short distance from the house and is cultivated to provide an abundance of fruit and vegetables year-round.

This year the fair will be set in the spacious park (to allow plenty of space between stall-holders). The fair runs from 10am to 4pm with tea, coffee and cake available all day.

Entrance is £5 (under 16s free) and payment can be made by cash or card. All the money raised goes to charity – this year funds will go to the Church of St Luke and St Teresa in Wincanton. Yarlington House, Yarlington, Nr Wincanton, Somerset BA9 8DY.
