n Carpe Diem, seize the day: Have you ever thought of doing this? Well, that is certainly what the speaker at the next Blackmore Vale u3a meeting has done. Lyricist Miranda Pender overcame a life-threatening illness and in her early 50s, changed her life and changed direction into music. At 52 Miranda learnt the guitar and started writing and singing her own songs so she has more than compensated for the late start! Come and listen to her raunchy, romantic, poignant, humorous songs. The subjects of which range from shipwrecks to stalkers; from the perils of punting to that awkward situation where you discover your lover’s name sewn into the back of his underpants! The meeting is at Henstridge Village Hall on January 11 at 2.15pm
n The Church of St Peter and St Paul in Wincanton is hosting a coffee morning on Saturday, January 8 between 10am and noon. There will be gifts, cake, books and a raffle. Everyone is welcome.
n According to its organisers, Café Sci, at The Market House, Castle Cary, is a place where, in an informal café-style setting, there are free monthly talks and debates about the latest thinking in science and technology from researchers and experts. 11 January: Deep Purple: Algal Blooms are melting the Greenland Ice Sheet It is often said that wherever there is water on earth there will be life of some sort. Ice sheets are no different. The Deep Purple Project is examining why purple-coloured algae are growing on the surface of the Greenland Ice sheet. There are often so many of them that they make the ice look like soot has been thrown over it. They bloom each year down the western margin of the ice sheet, increasing the amount of melt that occurs each summer. Two of the big questions we are trying to answer is how much extra melting do they cause, and will the ice sheet darken over bigger areas in the future as the climate warms and more of the ice sheet melts. n Military History Talk: A talk on the subject of The Oradour Massacre 1944 will be given via Zoom on Wednesday, January 26 at 6pm by Lt Col James Porter. The talk describes the horrific massacres carried out by the German Das Reich SS Panzer Division during its move from southern France to the Normandy battlefield shortly after D-Day in June 1944. The Sturminster Newton Heritage Trust is hosting a talk by Dr Richard Hobbs, Weston curator of Roman Britain, British Museum on Wednesday, February 9 in the Stour Hall in the Exchange in Sturminster Newton at 7.30pm. New Archaeological Fieldwork at Hinton St Mary; the Mosaic in Context will present results of the recent archaeological evaluation season conducted at the site of the mosaic discovered at Hinton St Mary in the 1960s. After the mosaic was discovered in 1963, subsequent excavations by Dr Kenneth Painter of the British Museum suggested that the mosaic belonged to a late Roman villa, probably of courtyard style. But Painter was not entirely convinced that the mosaic belonged to such a building complex and a more recent geophysical survey has also failed to resolve the problem. New excavations, led once again by the British Museum, aim to shed more light on why the famous mosaic was laid.
