Recruitment Prestige award fits company like a glove

By Karen Bate

A company in Yeovil which has been making leather goods for 195 years has recognised its many long serving employees. The Master of the Worshipful Company of Glovers CEO Reg Hankey attended the awards, along with Preeta Ramachandran, Area Director Southern –Work and Health Services at Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). Pittards has been making high performance leather for gloves, footwear for sport, the military and interiors since 1826 and this year’s annual event not only marked long service but its investment of the next generation through its apprenticeships and Kickstart team members. “People have always been at the heart of this 200-year-old business” said Mr Hankey. “We are proud to be able to perpetuate the skills that make Pittards leather so valued by major brands and be able to create employment through apprenticeships and the Kickstart programme. “We will be looking to create at least ten further apprenticeships in the coming year.” Pittards employs 200 people in Yeovil and exports over 90% of its product to 44 countries, working and innovating throughout the pandemic, releasing Tri Protex® antibacterial technology and Explorer Firebloc II™ fire resistant leather. Pittards is currently training 15 Kickstart scheme members and four apprentices, and are looking to take on at least ten more apprentices in the coming year. Pittards was established by Charles Pittard in 1826 as a leather dressing business supplying the many glove makers in the local area. Originally, Pittards would have worked only with local Somerset sheepskins, but in the early 20th century the company began sourcing from Africa. It was recognized that Cabretta or ‘hairsheep’ skins were more suitable for glove making with their finer hair follicles and high tensile strength. During the early 20th century, the company developed skills in dyeing leathers and imparting technical qualities such as waterproof and washable leathers – a major breakthrough that drove sales of dress gloves, as well as establishing partnerships with the military for better performing gloves for soldiers and pilots. In 1987 the Pittards Group merged with Garnar Booth plc, one of its largest UK competitors, which expanded its range of products into clothing leathers and some more niche products such as chamois leather and gave it more control over its UK supply chain.

HONOURED: Staff, apprentices and Kickstart team members at Pittards factory in Yeovil
