Sister act raises £1000 for charity Police execute drugs warrant
Two young sisters rode their bikes for 40 miles in one day to raise £1,026 for Forest Holme Hospice Charity in Poole. Macy and Pippa Hannington, aged nine and seven, set themselves the fundraising challenge in memory of their auntie Becky Frizzell, who died in January 2023. Becky was cared for at the hospice, as was her husband before her. The hospice provides specialist end-of-life care to patients across Wimborne, Poole and the Purbecks. Before the sisters had even put a foot on a pedal, they managed to smash their target of £500 by more than £100 by holding a bake and sunflower sale outside their house. The sisters set off on the morning of their ride ‘raring to go!’ but by the time they reached Ringwood they were getting
sore, but fuelled by snacks and sisterly encouragement, the girls powered on. The sister team made it home via the scenic route of Poole Harbour, worn out but thrilled to learn they had raised more than £1,000 which they later presented to Claire Cooper and Kirsty Perks at the charity, pictured above.
A 32-year-old Fordingbridge man has been interviewed by Hampshire Police after a misuse of drugs warrant was executed at an address in Pembridge House, Salisbury Road. Officers visited the address at 7am on Friday, November 17, and, after forcing entry to the property, seized several items, including suspected Class A drugs, mobile phones and drug paraphernalia. The operation involved Ringwood and Fordingbridge Neighbourhood Policing and the New Forest Neighbourhood Enforcement teams. Police have also linked up with partner agencies, including Sovereign Housing Association. They have already issued a notice to two people, without tenancy rights, found inside the property. New Forest District Commander, Chief Inspector Nick Marsden, said: “Anyone who has any information about drug dealing in their neighbourhood can contact us on 101, or report online via the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary website, always calling 999 in an emergency.”

Town museum receives top heritage award
The Museum of East Dorset, an independent charity, has been presented with the highlyesteemed Sandford Award for Heritage Education, recognising its dedication to providing engaging and enriching educational experiences. Since 1978, the Heritage Education Trust has been running the Sandford Award to praise heritage sites across the UK that run educational programmes. It is the only scheme in existence that judges formal learning programmes at heritage sites, with a particular focus on how sites such as the Museum of East Dorset can link to the curriculum children are learning in the classroom. Education is central to the Museum of East Dorset’s ethos and values and the team were delighted to have excelled in all judged categories. The assessor was particularly impressed by the dedication of the experienced volunteers and how ‘In all sessions, the long history of the building and the extensive collections were utilised to inspire children to discover the stories of the past that the museum holds, to make learning fun, active and memorable’. The museum’s director, Chezzie Hollow said: “Our dedicated team of volunteers are passionate about creating an environment that makes heritage learning engaging, inspiring and accessible to all”.

Learn of Lawrence
Dorset Archives Trust is holding a talk on December 14, at 7pm, on the history of Clouds Hill House, the National Trust property near Bovington. The war hero, writer and explorer TE Lawrence lived there during the 1930s. The story of the cottage draws extensively on the archives at the Dorset History Centre, including the Estate Papers of the Frampton’s of Moreton together with other historical sources. The evening takes place at Dorset History Centre, Bridport Road in Dorchester and costs £12. More information at: dorsetarchivestrust.org.
Two wedding days
BCP Council is holding two wedding open days in their Grade II-listed buildings. This Sunday, December 3, sees the Guildhall in Poole open from 11am-4pm and on January 14, 2024, from 11am-3pm, couples can visit Bournemouth Civic Centre – the Victorian Town Hall. Both events are free and include the chance to chat to wedding services providers.
Make a date with new calendar Volunteers at a community garden project have produced a calendar to help fund their efforts - and two other town causes. Wimborne Community Garden in School Lane has been running for 15 months growing fruit, vegetables and flowers through the efforts of residents. A share of produce grown at the site is handed to Wimborne Foodbank and Community Kitchen. Among the volunteers is Sarah Pizzey, who has put her photography skills to good use for the cause. Sarah has put together photographs taken at the garden over the last 15 months to form a 2024 calendar, which is now being sold to raise money for the initiative. “I have organised a calendar, as a fundraiser, with photos I’ve taken at the garden
over the last 15 months - the lifetime of the garden,” she explained. “We are totally dependent on donations and the generosity of local folk. “We are currently raising money to build an outdoor kitchen, to engage others with how to prepare vegetables and enjoy them too.”
People can buy the calendar, for £8, at the garden Wednesday 9am to noon, Friday, 1pm-4pm and Sunday, 2.30pm-4pm. For more information on the Wimborne Community Garden project, visit beaucroft.dorset.sch.uk/ community/wimbornecommunity-garden.

Scarlett says ‘thank you and season’s greetings’ Good news from Scarlett Sutcliffe, the young volunteer whose mission to raise funds for a trip to Cambodia to help raise educational and living standards has previously featured in this magazine. The 16-year-old pupil from QE School needs to find £4,500 for her endeavour but thanks to the generosity of friends, family and local people – not least you, our readers - she is almost there. She writes: “I’ve been working hard over the past year and have already raised more than £3500 with quiz and bingo nights, 60 miles of beach cleans, working part-time, selling sweet cones, monthly cake sales, raffles, fun seasonal events and more. “I must add that the New Stour &
Avon has helped so much as I have received donations ranging from £5-£50 after people read articles about me! “At last I’m into the last £1000 and hoping to reach my final target by the New Year so that I can concentrate on studying for my GCSEs. “To raise the final £1000 I will be selling Christmas cards at the Six Penny Handley Christmas market, making and selling hot-chocolate reindeer cones, and offering a Christmas gift wrapping service. “I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a happy new year.” To help, message 07859 909 534 or visit gofund.me/8da523f7 Scarlett Sutcliffe Wimborne
Christmas Trac Pack are back
The East Dorset Trac Pack, the local vintage tractor group will be hitting the road again on Saturday, December 9, for their Wimborne Christmas run. Due to the Save the Children parade having a much shorter route with reduced capacity this year, it was decided to have a separate tractor run in the morning before the parade. However, participants will be making donations, which in turn will later be added to the 2023 Save the Children collection. The run will leave Colehill Lane, near St Michaels School at 10.30am, drive down Middlehill Road, Hayes Lane, Leigh Road and then into and a
FACTOID OF THE FORTNIGHT Christmas is coming, the temperatures are beginning to drop and everything is feeling thoroughly wintery. We Brits are famously obsessed with the weather, and the temperature. If you are one of those constantly speculating as to what the temperature is - particularly in summer then did you know, crickets can give you a good indication of where the mercury sits? But how? Well, it all started in the late 19th century, when a physicist called Amos Emerson Dolbear noticed crickets in a field all sang at the same time. He started making notes and it soon became clear temperature seemed to influence the rate of the chirps. So, he set about analysing it and came up with a formula! So, the next time you want to know roughly how hot - or cold it is, and you have crickets around, have a listen. To get a rough estimate of the temperature, count the number of chirps per minute and use Dolbear’s calculation: Temperature (F) = 50 + (chirps per minute - 40) / 4 So, if you hear crickets chirping 60 times in 30 seconds (120 times a minute), the temperature is roughly 70F (about 20C). It’s not entirely accurate, of course, as Prof Dolbear didn’t note down which species of cricket he was analysing, for example, but it’s not a bad guide.
Different route for parade circuit around Wimborne once or probably twice. After this, the pack will take refreshments and lunch at the Coach and Horses, Poole Road, Wimborne. Most tractors will vacate the area before the parade starts. Joe Paine Wimborne
The annual Save the Children parade is all set to run again this year. It will start at 2.15pm on Satrurday, December 9, from the Coach Park off Allenview Road and will then exit into Allenview Road, turn left into Hanham Road and right into Rowlands Hill and Lewens Lane to round Rodways Corner, back to Park Lane and continue as in previous years, along East Street, King Street, West Street and into the square by the Kings Head. It will then travel down the High
Street before turning right and dispersing in King Street. Any organisation which has not already been approached and would like to join the parade is asked to contact Susie Gatrell on 01202 848897 or by e-mail: susie@kings-house.net. There will also be plenty going on in The Square throughout the day all in aid of the Save the Children Fund so come along and enjoy a day out in Wimborne. Anthony Oliver, MBE Wimborne
Our singers present a glorious night celebrating yuletide West Moors Singers are delighted to announce their Christmas Concerts, entitled That Glorious Night, presenting the Yuletide Musical of that name. It tells the story of the Nativity with uplifting music and narration, and there will also be a selection of popular seasonal songs. If you have a special carol it is sure to be in a festive medley, and there will be the chance to join in with some favourites too.
The programme will also feature Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head and That’s What Friends Are For - songs which the choir sang in the autumn while supporting the stars of Back To Bacharach. The professionals’ company showcased the music of the legendary hitmaker Burt Bacharach and were warm in their praise of West Moors Singers, calling them a great choir and a community asset. Concerts take place on Friday, December
15, at 7.30pm and Saturday, December 16, at 2.00pm and the venue is St. Martin’s Church Centre, Moorlands Road, West Moors, BH22 OJW. Tickets at £7 are from Buds and Blooms, the ticket manager on 01202 870769 or at the door. West Moors Singers invite you to enjoy Christmas music at its best. Pat Scott West Moors Singers

Lot more to explore for youngsters Witchampton Church of England First School has expanded its ‘outdoor explorers’ site for the children. The school, near Wimborne, places a huge emphasis on education in the open and has extensive grounds which they have developed to provide even more opportunities. All the children regularly use the space to get involved with outdoor learning, and activities including den building, fire lighting and whittling. Headteacher Jo Hancock said: “Our children love being outdoors so we decided to expand the ‘outdoor explorers’ part of our grounds. “It really helps with developing the children’s self esteem and muscle strength while they work collaboratively to solve problems and work creatively. “They have some amazing ideas and really love to challenge themselves. “Witchampton is in a beautiful area and we get the children out as often as possible. “Recently we were invited to the Critchell Estate for a meadow sweep and came back on a trailer pulled by a tractor. “We visit local farms and explore rivers – all to give the children the most rounded education that we can. “We have spaces left this year and welcome new children for the next academic year.”

Political round-up
We need more brownfield development My constituents are overwhelmingly in favour of brownfield development and against using the Green Belt. Therefore, the advice given by Natural England that there can be no more construction of buildings for overnight accommodation in Christchurch is a serious threat to us all. BCP councillors have accepted the advice of an unelected and unaccountable quango without challenge and are denying planning permission for every proposed housing development. What possible justification can there be for preventing construction on the former police station/magistrates’ court and the site of the former gasworks? In a total reversal of its previous advice, Natural England says that the level of phosphates in the tidal reaches of the River Avon is far too high. But most of those phosphates originate from the 50 miles
Christchurch & East Dorset CHRIS CHOPE MP of river upstream from Christchurch and are largely related to agricultural activity. Nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous provide nutrition for plants and animals and are required for them to be able to grow. Although it is said that an excess of nutrients can lead to eutrophication and algal blooms in rivers and lakes, that cannot
be valid in that part of the lower Avon because it is tidal. Concern about excess nutrients originated in the European Union’s Habitats Directive which was incorporated in UK law and interpreted by the EU Court of Justice in 2018 following which Natural England designated several rivers in the UK as being in ‘unfavourable condition’ due to excess nutrients. It believes that extra waste water from new housing developments could make matters worse. The Government has expressed its exasperation at the adverse impact of historic EU interference in the ability of local councils to promote new housing development. To that end, ministers tried to amend what is now the Levelling Up and Regeneration Act of 2023. When the amendments were rejected in the House of Lords the plan was to introduce
bespoke legislation in this November’s King’s Speech. This did not happen which means that there doesn’t seem to be any prospect of being able to unlock those brownfield developments in Christchurch which are currently on hold. Such a situation is unacceptable and shouldn’t be tolerated by either BCP Council or the Government. I have, therefore, written to the council calling on it to have the political will to use its powers to declare that there are ‘imperative reasons of overriding public interest for granting consent’. I have also tabled Parliamentary questions to ministers asking about how they propose to lift the moratorium on brownfield development in Christchurch. We left the EU not just to take back control over our borders but also our own laws. We now need to exercise the courage of our convictions.
Hiring & firing from the bottom of the barrel Well readers, the scourge of my pen these past few months, namely ‘Cruella’ Braverman has finally gone totally over the top and earned the red card from Rishi Sunak. In doing so she has destroyed the desire of the Tory party to play down the ‘nasty party’ epithet that the centrist players had endeavoured to cultivate. In fact she must have been the meanest, least affable player I can remember in the politics of the last 60 years. No longer those stupidly anguished cries of the homeless in their ‘lifestyle’ canvas accommodation in our cities nor the happy boat people in their luxurious holiday cabins on the Bibby Stockholm in Portland Harbour. As far as I am concerned it is good riddance and I hope she can enjoy a holiday in Rwanda to get over the disappointment. The Covid enquiry has been giving us the opportunity to
report on the inner workings of Johnson’s administration with the misogynistic, foul-mouthed rantings of his team. It also showed that government to be just as muddled and ruinous as that of its successor, Liz Truss. However, in the current fast and furious world of Tory party politics we now have the return of Lord ‘call me Dave’ Cameron stealing the headlines after a seven-year hiatus. Well...who saw that one coming? One can only conclude that Rishi looked into the already well-scraped barrel and just did not like what he saw. So, it is back to the future with a vengeance. There are a couple of hiccups for Sunak to overcome. The Tory party right wing are livid at the fall of their hero Suella and are threatening to call for yet another change of Tory
Dorset Labour ALAN CROSS leader to re-set their agenda before the General Election next year. Then there’s the Foreign Secretary’s performance since leaving office in 2017. Dave tried to enrich his personal coffers by attaching himself to the Australian Greensill company.
After they went bust, Dave got his knuckles rapped for excessive lobbying of his old pals during the Covid pandemic. And let’s not forget his disastrous foray into the postGaddafi Libyan maelstrom and his pitiful courting of the Chinese Premier Xi with whom he enjoyed a pint of English beer at his local in Oxfordshire only to find that that nation was continually bugging our telephony and computer systems. Literally, supping with the leader of a nation many Conservative MPs believe is our enemy. When oh when will this shambolic government realise that we are seen as a seriously dysfunctional nation in Europe and the wider world? Everyone is now waiting and wanting the real Government of change - that of Keir Starmer’s Labour Party.

General election cannot come soon enough The Autumn Statement was traditionally the time for small tweaks and announcements on the economic outlook. But with an increasingly desperate Government, this year’s event was seen by many as firing the starting pistol for a spring General Election. On the face of it, an inflationbusting increase to the National Living Wage, cutting National Insurance and boosting pensions will make people feel warmer than the temperature outside. But the public are not stupid, they know it is a pre-election sweetener. The failure to move tax thresholds with inflation has handed a chunk of that sweetener back to the Government and what was left was taken the next day when energy price increases were announced, with still no challenge to massive profits in the energy sector. The tax threshold freeze was introduced after Covid, and extended last year, running on
Dorset Lib-Dems VIKKI SLADE to 2028. Through it, people will pay tax quicker, and trip into high-rate tax earlier, affecting us all one way or the other. Calculations show that extra income tax paid from the freezing of the tax threshold will outweigh the saving made by reduction in the national insurance contributions. With the new National Living Wage, those working in the lowest-paid jobs for just 21 hours a week will pay tax on

every extra pound they earn, and for those who are dragged into the high-rate tax bracket, child benefit will be withdrawn on a sliding scale – saving the Government more money at a time when childcare and other costs related to bringing up children are rising so steeply. And even more worryingly, given that National Insurance was due to be increased a couple of years back to fund the NHS and Social Care, the Autumn Statement cut the dayto-day budget for the NHS and was silent on funding for Social Care or Dentistry – both areas in complete crisis. But there is another downside and that is the cost to the employer. Everyone agrees that the lowest wages need to go up but increase them too quickly and jobs could be lost as employers struggle to find the extra money. One of our local authorities, BCP council has calculated that the announcement has cost them £5.4million every year, at a time
“Your staff are exemplary in every way. They care for my every need, showing genuine kindness and always go above and beyond the call of duty. The excellent chef caters for my special diet - all cooked to perfection. I couldn’t ask for anything more.” Current resident
when councils around England are teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. Similar stories will be seen in the care sector and potentially retail and hospitality. This budget was a confidence trick. The problem is there is no white rabbit to pull out of a hat, there is no magic money tree, and the public knows it. Every time this Conservative government tries to deceive, they damage the credibility of all those who seek to serve. What the public deserves is leaders prepared to take difficult decisions honestly, to own up when they get things wrong and to play fair. With no meaningful windfall tax on energy firms, no clampdown on tax avoidance, no reform of business rates and council tax so that those making a fortune pay their fair share this government shows it is out of touch and out of time. A General Election will be welcome relief and cannot come soon enough.

Entrance was free, courtesy of Wimborne in Bloom, but the public generously donated over £170 on the door. Richard Nunn, chairman of Wimborne in Bloom said: “After all the recent bad weather, and more still to come, Wimborne in Bloom’s Charities Fair was held in lovely clear weather which encouraged many out from their homes to wander around the 21 Charities selling their wares. The footfall in the Allendale was steady all day from opening to closing and those taking part did well on their sales from the generosity of Wimborne folks! Thank you all who made it such a success.” Wimborne in Bloom will be showing their flag again at the Save the Children Parade
n Top, Mayor Diann March and Town Crier Chris Brown visit the Wimborne in Bloom table with its hampers as prizes. Above, Susie Gatrell receives the first prize hamper from Richard Nunn and the mayor.
through Wimborne on Saturday, December 9 and the first event of the New Year will be the annual Wine and Wisdom Fun Quiz evening on Thursday, February 29, 2024, in the Allendale Centre when teams of six will try and win the coveted Eco-Composting Shield. Next year’s Charities Fair has also been booked for Saturday, November 9. Full details are available at wimborneinbloom.org.uk.

Help your ambulance Sing-along-a-Christmas to help others in the community service to help you
The South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust is urging communities across the region to use its services responsibly this winter, as it prepares for a challenging period. The Trust is expecting a winter period of significant and sustained demand across its 999 services - a position that is reflected across other health and care organisations locally, regionally, and nationally. As winter approaches, flu and other respiratory illnesses are expected to rise, a drop in temperatures and ongoing pressures due to ambulance handover delays are set to compound the challenges already faced by the region’s ambulance service. In response to this, the Trust has developed an extensive winter plan, and its leaders are asking communities to help them to help you by following the below steps: • Only call 999 when someone is seriously injured or ill and their life may be at risk. For example, if someone is unconscious, not breathing or is bleeding heavily. • If you’re waiting for an ambulance, please don’t call 999 back — unless the patient’s condition has deteriorated or you no longer need an ambulance — to ask when one will arrive, these details can’t be provided, as
ambulances are sent to patients with the most life-threatening conditions first. • For non-life-threatening emergencies, people can access appropriate care by visiting NHS 111 online, contacting their GP or getting advice from a pharmacy. Dr Paul Johnson is Chief Medical Officer with NHS Dorset Integrated Care Board (ICB), said: “There are many things people can do over the winter months to help themselves, their families and local health and care partners, including getting vaccinated against Flu and COVID and making sure they have the right medicines at home to treat everyday ailments, but by far the most important thing is to use the right service at the right time. “Our website staywelldorset. nhs.uk contains information for people so they can make an informed choice if they need medical help.”

‘I’ve lost 5 stone and embraced being bald!’ In 2011, Kelly faced the challenge of alopecia that led to the loss of her hair, eyebrows, and eyelashes. But she faced life with a positive attitude, until the weight of her condition started taking a toll on her overall wellbeing. With her confidence eroded and her body burdened by excess weight, she found solace in food. Binge eating became a way to cope, and her weight spiralled out of control. She stopped socialising, shopping, and lost sight of the confident person she once was. A wake up call on the scales However, her mother’s encouragement in April 2022 led her to the 1:1 Diet, and with that her transformation began. Kelly’s initial appointment was a wake-up call - at 13 stones 13lb, she realised the change she needed to make. Guided by her consultant, Kelly adopted the 1:1 Diet’s structured approach, combining meal replacement
gave her a newfound sense of confidence. Today, Kelly is living her life fully, enjoying social outings, exercise, and her role as a bridesmaid.
products with a caloriecontrolled meal in the evening. The results were astounding. Kelly lost 6lb in her first week, and her energy levels soared. Week after week, she shed pounds and inches. By August, she was three stone lighter and ready to embrace new experiences, like shopping for a dress for a family wedding.
Hitting her weight goals In January 2023, Kelly celebrated a remarkable fivestone weight loss; but Kelly’s journey was not solely about weight loss. It was about redefining her relationship with herself, her family, and her body. Embracing her baldness, she realised that taking control of her health
An inspiration to others Kelly’s story is a beacon of inspiration for anyone seeking transformation. Through determination, guidance, and the support of the 1:1 Diet, she found her way back to herself. Kelly’s journey is a testament to the positive impact that the 1:1 Diet can bring to one’s life. Now, she says: “My initial goal was to lose 5st but I feel really good about where my weight is now. I’m over the moon to have won the 1:1 Diet Life Changer Award at the 2023 Slimmer Awards. “It’s been a fantastic experience and it’s a nice reminder of how far I’ve come. I feel so much more confident and better in myself and it’s also helped my image in terms of my alopecia. Clear up Carrie’s Christmas card quest by Lorraine Gibson For a decade, Carrie Moebus has been trying to discover the identity of a stranger who sends festive cards all the way from East Dorset to her home in Fort Worth, Texas every Christmas. The sender, who she believes is either a child or an adult with, let’s say, slightly messy hand writing, clearly does not know her, since the cards are addressed not to Carrie’s family, but one she’s never heard of. “Every Christmas for about 10 years, we get a letter like this in the mail, no return address, and we are not the addressees. The post stamp looks like it’s from Christchurch,” she says. Most of the stamps on the envelopes that Carrie has saved have been franked with BH23, but one reads BH1. “Inside is a Christmas card; the handwriting has gotten better over the years, so I’m assuming it’s being sent by a child.
“It’s signed Joshua Mitchell. I have asked our neighbourhood and they don’t know anyone by that name and no one by that name ever lived at the address it’s being mailed to.” In his writing, ‘Joshua’ uses an ampersand several times, so I mention that it points to a grownup, yet Carrie feels it’s a child. “I can see your point,” she says, but adds, “If I had pics of the previous years, it would be more clear it’s a child as the writing and spelling have improved over the years.” The jolly cards are either addressed to Mr & Mrs Jose Wynne or Wynna and, despite being signed ‘from Joshua Mitchell’, one card also uses the name Josh as the recipient – with the surname Momonts, or something close to that. The plot thickens. I ask Carrie whether the cards are printed by the same company, or are in aid of any charities.
“No, they’re all different companies from what I can tell. “They look like they come from a standard card pack that you might buy in the store of a box of 10.” And has she asked a handwriting expert to have a look? “No, I’m not even sure where I would go for that.” Carrie has asked her neighbours if any of the names – Joshua, Mitchell, Jose, Wynne, Wynna, Momonts - mean anything, but all say no. She has also confirmed that there are no other streets with the same name as hers. Carrie’s aware that BH23 takes

in Christchurch, Bransgore and other areas, and she’s posted an appeal for help on a Christchurch Facebook group. She remains optimistic. “I hope someday we’ll connect the two – sender and addressee. “I’d love to connect the two families and I would totally send them both a Christmas card!” She and her family hope that our readers may be able to add a missing piece to what is a particularly frustrating puzzle, or even better, solve it completely. TARRANT LAUNCESTON Park in the street that runs through the village and walk southwards along it. You’ll notice lots of thatched cottages. You’ll soon come to the parish boundary with Tarrant Monkton at a ford. Turn left and at the next bend in the road join a bridleway that heads eastwards uphill along the parish boundary. After a while the bridleway, Turner’s Lane, veers right slightly, leaving the boundary line. At the top of the hill it enters Launceston Wood and swerves left, north east, through the wood to a junction where you turn left and head north, soon re-entering Tarrant
Launceston. The bridleway goes along the top of the ridge and there are lovely wide views of the countryside. Having passed Hyde Hill Plantation,
on your left, the waymarked route on the ground runs slightly aside from the definitive line of the bridleway but, as it’s more convenient, follow it. Soon you’ll cross the parish boundary into Tarrant Hinton and rejoin the definitive line of the bridleway running downhill to join the A354 at Turnpike Cottage. Turn left and walk south west alongside the main road, which has wide verges, for about a mile to Tarrant Hinton where you turn left and walk south alongside the Tarrant, soon re-entering Tarrant Launceston parish and after about a mile (depending where you parked) you’ll be back at your car, having walked nearly five miles.

Banana and Walnut Cake As you know, my husband and I, (nod to the late Queen!) like to go travelling quite a lot. But one of my pet hates in hotel rooms, is a fruit bowl! I know it’s a nice thought from the hotel, but the smell really puts me off. When I was travelling with my first husband in Egypt, we did a Nile cruise. The basket of fruit was on the side, my ex-husband didn’t eat fruit and I only eat a little, so it stayed there for days and days. In the end, the smell was making me feel so ill, I tipped the lot into the Nile! I think it was made worse as my ex-husband wouldn’t put the air conditioning on! Fast forward a few years and my current husband, (I say that to keep him on his toes!) and I went to Vietnam. Our first hotel was in Hanoi. In was a very small room and very dark. There was a fruit bowl in the room. I am not sure how old they were but the smell was awful. We thought of just putting them in the waste bin, but we had done this with some old clothes that we had brought on holiday on purpose, to throw away. However, the maid had other ideas and took all the clothes out, had them washed and ironed and put back on the bed!!! I had visions of the fruit reappearing every day! So, we took them out and threw them out!
with Martha Legg 140g caster sugar 1 beaten egg 225g plain flour 2 tsp baking powder 4 very ripe bananas 85g chopped walnuts 50ml milk Method STEP 1 Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Grease a 2lb loaf tin with some butter and line the base with baking parchment, then grease this as well. STEP 2 In a large bowl, mix together the butter, sugar and egg, then slowly mix in flour and baking powder. Peel, then mash the bananas. Now mix everything together, including the nuts.
This is why I make banana and walnut cake; it uses ripe bananas so no waste. Ingredients 100g softened butter, plus a little extra for greasing
STEP 3 Pour your mixture into the tin and bake for 1 hr, or until a skewer comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool on a wire rack before removing from the loaf tin. The loaf can now be wrapped tightly in cling film and kept for up to 2 days, or frozen for up to 1 month. Defrost and warm through before serving. Serve in thick slices topped with vanilla ice cream and drizzled with a little chocolate sauce.

Recipient of gold and silver industry awards, creamy, crumbly Dorset Blue Vinny comes gift-wrapped in waxed paper so pretty you can leave it on display. A staple of almost every Dorset farmhouse until the Second World War ended production, it was historically made from leftover milk and some unusual ‘blueing’ methods including dragging a mouldy harness through the milk or placing maturing cheeses next to the farmer’s dirty boots to encourage mould. Since the recipe was resurrected in the 1980s, it’s been made at Woodbridge Farm. Add chutney, digestive biscuits and a glass of red. £11.60/500g dorsetblue.com/shop or from the farm’s vending machine at Stock Gaylard, DT10 2BD.

Education
Illustrators create a new chapter for young bookworms Two renowned children's illustrators have visited Wimborne to encourage young people to use their library. Louise Yates and Mike Brownlow hosted talks and drawing sessions with young people at the Crown Mead library. The events were funded by the Friends of Wimborne Library group, which is keen to encourage young people to visit the facility. A spokesman said: “Our thinking is that nowadays parents are working all week and children are in day nurseries, so there is little opportunity for pre-school children to visit their local library”. “Consequently, many children are starting school never having been to a library. “We believe libraries can change lives and are fortunate to have a vibrant library in Wimborne. “By introducing more young children to the library we hope to encourage them to join and enrich their lives with books. “We also aim to inspire greater involvement from local schools.

Eight examples of chiropractic benefits
6 Increased Balance: Chiropractic care can improve balance and reduce dizziness. These changes – which can be durable – occur when neck and back adjustments can reduce injury and remove the reasons for such dizziness.
1 Reduced Neck Pain: Thankfully, many studies have shown that we can help with neck pain over an extended period, with some going as far as to say that the reduction of neck pain was durable and long-lasting. These studies have found that selfreported neck pain can be reduced via neck adjustments and mobilisation and is thus one of the chief long-term benefits. 2 Reduced Back Pain: Most people think of the back when they think of chiropractic adjustments, and studies have found that this is the case for good reason – in the long term, adjustments can reduce back pain and make a noticeable improvement to the strength and flexibility of someone’s body.
3 Improved Posture: Many of chiropractic’s benefits are not about pain, but about wellness. Improvements to posture have been found in some case studies, with chiropractic adjustments being credited as improving the posture of people studied. These changes are, by their very nature, long-term, and improved posture has a variety of other positive physical benefits as well, thus showing how improved posture is one of the biggest long-term benefits of chiropractic care.
7 Increased Flexibility: Chiropractic adjustments can improve flexibility and range of motion making it easier for you to move, get exercise, reduce stiffness, and stay comfortable. ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE
4 Injury Prevention: Studies have found that chiropractic adjustments can help prevent injury by adjusting posture, helping injuries heal, and potentially reducing malfunctions in our bodies. By preventing injury, our body can reap longterm benefits. 5 Headache Reduction: Other studies have found that chiropractic can reduce headaches, via neck and back adjustments. These positive changes can have a big improvement on our quality of life and overall functionality.
8 Relieving Chronic Conditions: Studies have concluded that chiropractic can potentially slow down the damage and pain caused by certain conditions. This includes bone loss and pain caused by osteoporosis. As a result, some people who suffer from longterm or debilitating conditions like this may see significant benefits from chiropractic care. As you can see, there are many long-term benefits of chiropractic care, and this healing modality can make a major positive improvement in your life. If you are suffering from any of the above issues, or if you believe that chiropractic can positively affect your life, give us a call on 01202 604707 or email admin@wimbornewellnesscentre.co.uk.

From seeds to plants at Ferndown
The Green Care team braved torrential rain to complete the build at the Centre, Ferndown, writes Lydia Harvey of Dorset Community Action. Following two years of fundraising the team have managed to secure enough funding to build a community garden at Ferndown Family Hub. This has been achievable through the Ferndown Family Hub, CLA Charitable Trust and Tesco Stronger Starts,
(previously named Bags for Help).
What’s this project all about? The project will create a community growing garden, working with Ferndown Community Hub, training local volunteers and families to help maintain the space and connect young people with the adjoining Ferndown Common, Dorset, a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The funding will be used to help
young people get involved in outdoor horticulture activities, exploring different land-based themes, learning about plants and how to maintain them, the local biodiversity and also connecting them to Ferndown Common through horticulture. The project will engage with volunteers to repurpose an unused plot of land to construct accessible raised beds and, when planted, grow fresh fruit and vegetables for a local low-income community,
whilst gaining skills and Level 1 horticulture qualifications through the National Open College Network. Working in partnership with the Community: Through partnership with the Ferndown Community Hub the project will work with the Ferndown community, families, elderly, and young people from Tricketts Cross estate, the second highest area of deprivation in Dorset, outside Weymouth and Portland.

There are approximately 800 low income families on the estate as well as many elderly, and Hopscotch Pre School currently has 160 children attending. In an area with many older people living in flats, there is little access to public green space for community use. It is through talking with these families that we identified the need for this project. These raised beds and benches will make this space a place to come and relax, get involved with the local community and grow fresh produce for those that need it. Hands-on meeting The relaunched Wimborne Gardening Club (formerly the Wimborne Horticultural Society) has enjoyed two monthly meetings since its autumn show in September, writes Anthony Oliver. It is now inviting everyone to its December meeting which will be held on Monday, December 4, in the Allendale Community Centre, Wimborne, at 7.30pm. This will be a very much hands on meeting as it is a workshop being arranged by Glenda, one of the Wimborne Gardening Clubs Planning Group and a freelance qualified florist. The aim of the workshop is to be making a contemporary wreath or, as an option, to make a table arrangement, both of which are just right for the fast approaching Christmas season. The evening is free to club members and there is a £3 fee for non-members. Farming & Environment
A day at the farm with Tiffany Fleming
Tiffany is a volunteer at High Mead Farm in Longham, Ferndown. High Mead Farm is a working farm run to promote the benefits of engaging with animals, soil, and nature. They ‘create purposeful roles for our cofarmers, young people and adults alike, to help bring about a sense of well-being and self-worth that many have never experienced before’. of free-to-borrow tools for the people of Ferndown, Colehill, Wimborne, Verwood and adjoining parishes. The Library stocks most domestic tools to fit most jobs. There is a full range of power/battery tools: drills, electric saws, sanders, routers, and general hand tools for small or large DIY projects. It also covers gardening needs from hedge trimmers, strimmers, scarifiers, and garden waste shredders... right down to basic loppers, shovels, and spades more than just basic decorating tools, even carpet cleaners. You name it, the DIY-Library most likely has it… and if it hasn’t, it will try and source it for you. You can view the inventory online, although not every single item is listed as there are simply too many to choose from! The concept is intended to help the community save money, and to ensure tools are utilised and maintained, not just sat rusting in a shed, unused. Our Co-Farmers are so impressed with the Library’s efforts that they have even made them a special sign! The Library is easy to use. Simply go to diy-library.org. uk and look at the inventory or search Facebook for DIY-Library, join, and then message Dusty Shed.

With so many new animals being welcomed to High Mead this month, there needs to be a great deal of preparation and maintenance before they arrive, but help is at hand from our CoFarmers. The Farm is not a formal educational facility so we have a little less red tape and fewer restrictions on what we can offer our Co-Farmers by way of activities and learning. There is no curriculum timeline to satisfy, no exam pressure, nor school inspections to pass. That’s not to say High Mead is without rules and regulations; there are as many acres of paperwork to be completed as there are sods to dig, or eggs to collect. But being less tightly regulated means we can offer a much broader range of experiences and at a pace that suits each of the Co-Farmers’ individual needs. Skills at the Farm are not taught, they are demonstrated and then our Co-Farmers are encouraged to have a go whilst under supervision and with guidance, so the learning journey is a very positive one. Often they undertake work they’d be excluded from in most formal organisations; one of the most popular activities (and one we benefit hugely from), is maintenance. Our Co-Farmers love to repair things, recycle things and build things. We have a wide range of tools and equipment and there is really very little our Co- Farmers can’t do; from sawing to sanding, strimming to shredding. Plus, with the DIY Tool Library now on site at the Farm, they have an even broader opportunity to learn. The DIY-Library, whilst a completely separate organisation from High Mead, and run entirely by their own volunteers, has made its home in the Farm’s Nissen hut. As its name suggests, it offers an amazing collection

Coade Hall features the largest cinema screen in North Dorset and benefits from full surround sound audio system. by Lorraine Gibson Showaddywaddy are 50 this year, so let’s go for a little walk back to where it all began. An amalgam of several local bands, they were formed in Leicester in 1973, the year Nixon faced impeachment for Watergate, a pint cost 14p and the Duracell Bunny was activated. Showaddywaddy have proven to be just as durable as the famous pink fluffy drummer, in fact more, so as they’ve been going strong ever since. Now, with an incredible 20m record sales and tours all over the globe under their drape jackets, they’re heading to Dorset as part of their latest tour to celebrate their golden career milestone. According to the rainbow-suited, drainpipetrousered line up, it’s going to be a dynamic and uplifting show, packed with their greatest hits, many of which made number one across Europe. So, show them you’ve got what it takes, and join in their nostalgia-fest for a night of unforgettable, decade-defining tunes like Under The Moon Of Love, Pretty Little Angel Eyes, Hey, Rock & Roll, You’ve Got What It Takes and the ultimate crepe-soled floor filler, Three Steps To Heaven. You already know the moves . . . Friday, December 8, 7.30pm. www.tivoliwimborne.co.uk.

UK restaurant insolvencies rise by 46% Restaurant Insolvencies will continue to grow until interest rates and inflation fall considerably, says Antony Batty & Company. In October 2023, we reported on research that showed that only 50% of pubs are making a profit, and that the number of pub insolvencies had increased by 835 in the year to February 2023. Now, research has shown that this experience is replicated in the restaurant sector, with the number of UK restaurants becoming insolvent between 2021/22 and 2022/23 rising from 1,517 to 2,214 – an increase of 46%. This is a significant increase and shows that the hospitality sector is one of the hardest hit by the current general inflationary and energy cost upwards spiral, and the squeeze on consumer spending. In addition, these other factors have played their part: A continued shortage of staff in the hospitality sector has driven up wage costs significantly. The increasing cost of servicing debt caused by on-going interest rate rises, which given that many restaurant groups had relied on debt finance to fund renovations and also expansion plans, has hit the sector hard.
How can Insolvency Practitioners help? As Elaine Wilkins, head of business development at our Bournemouth office points out: “These are very difficult times for many business sectors, but especially the restaurant sector, which had already been extremely hard hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. “There is no doubt that current conditions are driving many more of them to breaking point and further insolvencies are inevitable. “As with all businesses, our advice is for directors to act as soon as possible if financial difficulties are mounting.” Some of the main options available are: Negotiating a Time to Pay Arrangement with HMRC. These structured payment plans with HMRC give businesses time to pay back what they owe. We are experienced in dealing with HMRC in such matters. Additional Finance. We have professional contacts with multiple lenders who could help find the right deal for extra funding. A Company Voluntary Arrangement. If creditors are demanding the money they are owed, the CVA process allows for an insolvency practitioner to propose to them a

When should you do a Power of Attorney? ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE Anyone can put a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) in place provided they have the required capacity. If the person granting the LPA has capacity, then these are widely considered the quickest and most cost-effective option, with the registration process currently taking up to 20 weeks from the date of submission. An LPA is not your only option, however. An individual can grant a General Power of Attorney (GPA) to any nominated person or persons and can be restricted to deal with a specific transaction or to be in place for a specified period of time. The GPA is not a long-term solution and should not be treated as such. If an individual has lost capacity, a family member can apply to the Court of
Protection to be appointed as their Deputy. Unfortunately, a deputyship application is generally more complex, costly and time consuming. At present, an application is taking a minimum of 12 months from the date of submission to the date that the order is granted. This means that the family and/or deputy applying to be appointed, are unable to access the individual’s funds, meaning that bills such as care home fees, utilities and sundries go unpaid for long periods of time. If you have a loved one that may need assistance with their finances, either now or in the future, don’t delay making arrangements to ensure that they are protected, speak with one of our specialist solicitors today to discuss the options available to you. Road race is marked by new record
The 25th anniversary of the running of the Wimborne 10 Mile Road Race on Sunday, November 19, was marked by the shattering of the men’s course record which had stood since 2007. Jonathan Cornish of Hercules Wimbledon roared home in a time of 50.34 reducing the record by over a minute earning himself a £500 prize in the process. This was despite the course being covered in surface water at the six-mile mark. Indeed, two weeks ago the course which runs from Pamphill to Shapwick and back was so flooded in the vicinity of Barford Farm that the race would have been in doubt. In the womens race Gill Pearson of the A little way behind in second place was Running for Time club won in a time of Daniel Mulryan of Thames Valley Harriers 1.03.13, followed by Molly Roach of 52.17 and Cthe 1.03.30 and Louise Mills HILthird D OKEman FORDhome BLANDin FOa RDfield FORUM DORSEDorset T DT11 8Doddlers HN www.hman anfordJaymee school.co.uk of 277 was City of Salisbury 1.04.01 in third in a field of just under 100. County cricket society is having a ball
By Paul Pearson Dorset Cricket Society Our speaker season commenced on October 19 with Ventnor-raised Mark Garaway who, since 2012, has been director of cricket at Millfield School. Mark spoke about his long career in cricket from his early days playing league cricket on the Isle of Wight which led him to joining Hampshire. Since he ended his career in 1999 he has been coach of Somerset, team analyst and assistant coach to Duncan Fletcher’s winning England team and later, operations manager with Cricket Ireland. In addition to his role at Millfield School, Mark is in demand as a mind coach and his clients include Exeter Chiefs rugby squad and the football players of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool FC. Mark was joined by his Millfield protégé, Dom Kelly, pictured below, the Hampshire and Young England all-rounder, who is taking time out from his Millfield A-level studies at the moment for an International tournament in India. Then, next January he will be taking part in the under-19 Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka. Our speaker on October 26 was Dilip Jajodia, managing director of Dukes, who came to tell us about their famous cricket balls. Initially, after a career in insurance Dilip
set up Morrants to sell cricket balls and equipment direct to the public. In time he bought Dukes cricket company which had been in existence since 1760. With the aid of a video he explained how the balls are manufactured. The best balls are hand stitched from four
quarters of leather from prime Aberdeen Angus cattle. The leather must be at least 4mm thick to provide resilience. Two leather cups are made which then have the cork inside fitted before they are hand stitched through the seam. A top ball maker will take an hour to stitch one ball using their eye to get 80 stitches around the circumference. In total a ball takes 3.5 hours to make. After stitching, the ball is then pressed into shape, greased, polished and the gold writing applied by heat treatment. Dilip revealed that for test matches the balls are stamped with details of the matches. Dukes cricket balls were used for last summer’s Ashes test series. The Dorset Cricket Society meets weekly on Thursday afternoons at 1.45pm - until the end of March - at the Hurn Bridge Sports Club, Christchurch, adjacent to the Dorset Cricket Centre. New members will be warmly welcomed. Visit: dorsetcricketsociety.co.uk. We have a full programme of external speakers for our 21st season year as follows: December 1, January 3, February 4, March 3.
