Sunny spot to meet your friends

Wimborne has needed this get-together space for a long time, writes Tom Scrase, and it has just opened in the Square, on a lovely sunny April day. Many customers quickly filled up all the tables.

Care group donates £1500

Last Friday saw Karl Jung, chairman of the Two Bridges Care Group, the local voluntary organisation that assists elderly and infirm clients to get to medical and dental appointments, donate a £1000 cheque to Avon Valley Community Matters, and a further £500 to the Fordingbridge Friendship Group. The photo shows Karl presenting the £500 cheque to Olive Baker, Ron Mathitis and Ann Pye of the Fordingbridge Friendship Group, meeting in local public house, the Ship. The Fordingbridge Friendship Group meets every first and third Tuesday morning, in the Ship and is for bereaved and single people who enjoy a chat over a cup of tea or coffee. The AWCM is a charity shop in Fordingbridge

High Street, a few doors along from the Ship, and is mainly a Charity Clothes Shop. For further details, contact Derek Ayling on 01425 650770 or Hippotrain@BTInternet.com.

Second town man is jailed

A second man has been jailed after a burglary in Ringwood. Quincy Rufus Digby Hopkins, 26, of Hightown Road in Ringwood, appeared before Southampton Crown Court on Monday, April 3, where he was sentenced to 15 months in prison. The court heard how, on February 14 last year, Hopkins forced entry into the annex of a property in Cloughs Road, Ringwood, and stole cash, cigarettes and several watches. The 26-year-old was identified after blood left at the scene returned a positive DNA match. William George Sheen, 26, of Clarks Close in Ringwood, was previously sentenced to 28 months in prison for this burglary and others.

Police staff investigator Stephen Hortin, from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary’s Operation Hawk Team, said: “I am pleased with the result of this sentencing, and that both Hopkins and Sheen will be spending time in prison for this burglary.”

Plan for nail salon

A new nail salon could open in Wimborne.

A planning application has been submitted to change the use of part of Eastbrook House, in East Street, from a flooring shop to a nail salon.

“The applicant will retain the shop front and will not alter any structural and architectural features,” the application, on behalf of Ms Lien Dang, of Poole, said.

For more details, and to make a comment, visit dorsetcouncil. gov.uk.

Winder application

Fordingbridge town council has applied to New Forest District Council for permission to add an automatic winder to its clocktower.

The council said: “A clock tower can be quite a dangerous place. For safety reasons we wish to eliminate the need for our staff to climb the tower.” The application has been made because of the town hall’s Grade II-listed building status.

Coronation honour for officer

A Dorset police officer is set to attend next week’s coronationafter serving Queen and Country for most of his career.

PC Jim Perks has been specially chosen to take part in Operation Golden Orb, the Coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla. He will be joining a contingent of officers lining the ceremonial route, representing police forces from around the country.

Jim is a frontline response officer with Dorset Police and has served since 2007. Before that he was in the RAF for 22 years and was awarded medals for long service and good conduct.

In 2017 he was awarded a Commander’s Commendation for saving the life of a young girl

who had jumped into the sea with a weighted rucksack. With no hesitation, Jim went in and prevented her from drowning.

“I’ve spent most of my career serving queen and country, so itâ’s an immense honour to be part of His Majesty’s Coronation,” he said.

“It’s not often you get a chance to be part of such a historic occasion and I expect my family will be watching at home, hoping to catch a glimpse of me in the crowd.”

As well as Jim, Dorset Police is sending a contingent of officers as part of a wider mutual aid operation.

They will include specialists from the firearms, roads and dog-handling teams.

Restaurant is set to close

Prezzo in Wimborne is closing down. The firm says changing customer habits and spiralling costs have led to the the decision to axe dozens of restaurants across the country.

A total of 46 loss-making sites will shut after costs more than doubled over the past 12 months. Among them is the eatery in West Borough, Wimborne. A timeline for the closures has yet to be revealed.

UNWIND IN WEST MOORS

Ali and Sandra are the owners of Unwind With Us in West Moors. After a chance conversation over coffee in 2021, we discovered we both had a long held desire to open a yarn shop. We were fortunate to find premises in Verwood which we opened in February 2022 and quickly built a loyal customer base for both yarn sales and courseswe were amazed at how many people we taught to crochet that year! In December 2022 we had the opportunity to move the business to West Moors into the former Golden Hands premises where we are going from strength to strength. We have a wide range of yarns from Stylecraft, King Cole and Scheepjes and are constantly adding to our ranges to extend the variety of yarns and haberdashery we stock.

Courses and workshops have now started in the new shop and we’ve had an amazing response. There are still some spaces left, so have a look on our website, www.unwindwithus.co.uk or email us sales@unwindwithus.co.uk for more information.

Witness appeal after armed robbery

A man is claimed to have pulled out a knife and demanded money from a shop worker in Wimborne.

The incident unfolded at Spar in Gordon Road at around 9pm on Monday, April 24.

Dorset Police said the person allegedly grabbed the victim by their clothing and took cash from the till, taking between £300 and £400.

Following enquiries by detectives from Dorset County CID, a 34-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of robbery. Detective Sergeant Rich Barnett, of Dorset County CID, said: “We are

Malawi to be focus of fundraising

Bunting, banners and a singalong to one of the world’s highest grossing films – that’s how Wimborne will be marking Christian Aid Week this year. Celebrations kick off with an ecumenical service at Wimborne Methodist Church on Sunday, May 14, beginning at 10.30am. And the mystery cinematic experience – involving nuns, Nazis and mountains – will take place at St Michael and All Angels, Colehill, from 7pm on Tuesday, May 16.

During the week there will be some house-to-house collections and a street collection takes place on the Friday.

Malawi – still struggling to recover from devastating Cyclone Freddy – is the focus of this year’s fundraising. The cyclone washed away crops, displaced half a million and killed several hundred people.

Christian Aid is there in such emergencies but stays on to help those affected get back on their feet. The development agency will supply superior seeds and ensure the farmers receive a fair price for their crops, thereby securing a better future for the next generation.

area around the time of the incident. “We are particularly keen to speak to anyone who has captured anything of relevance on dashcam footage, home CCTV systems or doorbell cameras. “This includes a blue Renault Kangoo that was reported to be in the area and was being driven by a man in bright orange high-visibility clothing.” Anyone with information should contact Dorset Police via www.dorset.police. uk or by calling 101, quoting incident number 55230062730.

Deli of delights gets a taste of success

Congratulations must go to the East Street Deli, Wimborne, just one of eight national finalists shortlisted for an award by the Small Awards, which celebrate dynamism and resilience in the small business sector and standout independents that play a key role in local high streets and communities. The deli was opened by Simon and Claire Warren in June 2020, in the middle of the Lockdown and with a world of uncertainty surrounding the retail sector.

Their plan was to serve a wide range of cheeses, meats, wines, beers, ciders, coffee and more to local people.

It worked, for not only are they getting noticed, they’ve now been nominated for the title of UK High Street Hero for best high street business.

Their range blends local, national and continental delicacies and more than 50 cheeses fill their counter at any given time. Evolving as they go, they now have a refill section for filling your own bottles with household cleaning products and a new website launching shortly.

“It’s incredible to have been shortlisted,” say Claire and Simon.

“The UK is full of inspirational, independent businesses and, contrary to popular belief, the high street is alive and

kicking. We are so proud of what we have built in our community and are grateful for the support of our customers and the people of Wimborne.

“We’re looking forward to the awards in May and meeting the other finalists.”

Category winners, and the overall winner of Small Business of the Year, will be announced at ceremony in London on May 18.

Should East Street Deli win an award, it will join their 2022 awards for Independent Business of the Year and Overall Business of the Year from Wimborne Business Awards.

“The Small Awards is all about celebrating the incredible small business owners who are at the heart of the economy and communities,” said Michelle Ovens CBE, Founder of Small Business Britain.

“They recognise the passion and tenacity of small firms, particularly during turbulent times. Claire and Simon should be incredibly proud and we can’t wait to celebrate with them in May.” East Street Deli: facebook.com/theeaststreetdeli Website (under construction): theeaststreetdeli.co.uk thesmallawards.uk.

We’re being misled by Russian propaganda

I was intrigued having followed France 24 online over the past year. Unlike our journalists they run a Truth or False article based on Russian propaganda.

This week we saw Russia’s latest video showing a Russian-speaking woman having been stopped in her car and being called a pig by supposedly Ukrainian troops with her children screaming while

shots are fired into the air. But through a process of geo-location, the video was proved to be false.

Geo which matches surrounding landmarks with the video confirmed that the location of the video was 30km behind the Russian line at a village in Donetsk which has been under Russian control since 2014.

When approached by France 24 it was

A right royal litter pick

Here is a poem that I’ve written for the Coronation weekend. A friend who lives opposite me who is as annoyed and disappointed as me when sees a lot of litter in our area (Wimborne Rd West), decided that we would get together and do some voluntary litter picking.

On May the 8th, when Charles is newly crowned He would like to see his Country break new ground

To volunteer our precious time

To make this Country great So let’s do this for our Head of State!

We’ve decided to tackle all the litter

To make things better for every

little ‘critter’

We’ll work to re-define each verge

So that wildlife will find it easier to emerge.

We’ll cover from ByTheWay fields and woods

Up to the Canford Bottom Roundabout

Clearing mess left by every thoughtless litter lout. The only thing we’d like to change

Is to hold our clear-up on the Sunday

As it is back to work for most folk

There will be a bring and buy table and a raffle with all proceeds going towards the 2023 campaign which is to

All are warmly invited.

Uplifting way to help hospice

The Fayrewood Singers of Verwood are pleased to announce their concert, ‘Spring into Summer’, to be performed at Verwood Methodist Church on Saturday, May 27, at 3pm. It will be an afternoon of

immediately removed from the Russian media having convinced millions of Russians it was true.

The only exception for removal appears to be the Russian Embassy in London. Is it any wonder we get some poor misguided fools writing about NATO being the bad guys in this war?

An evening of jeux et crêpes!

A pleasant evening was had by members of the WimborneValognes Twinning Association at their French themed evening of games and pancakes. With Parisienne café music playing softly in the background, members chatted while eating crêpes, which were cooked to perfection by Chris and his team in the kitchen. There were savoury and sweet fillings, including smoked salmon, crème fraîche & cornichons, butternut squash & stilton, and apple purée, cinnamon and rum-soaked raisins.

Later there was a beetle drive which involved vigorous

shaking of the dice that got more and more frantic as we drew nearer the finish. Finally, after a raffle, we played a couple of rounds of bingo with the numbers called in French. The winners received chocolate Easter eggs.

The Wimborne-Valognes Twinning Association will have an information stand in Wimborne Square on Monday, May 8, for the Big Help Out initiative to promote volunteering.

If you would like to know more about our association then please call by for a chat.

FACTOID OF THE FORTNIGHT

Have you ever exclaimed, in a moment of shock or outrage, ‘Gordon Bennett!’? And have you ever wondered who Mr Bennett is, if he existed at all? Well, we can clear that up for you. The phrase is believed to have originated due to the reputation of James Gordon Bennett Jr, the son of Scottish-born James Gordon Bennett Snr - founder and publisher of the New York Herald paper in 1835. Junior, who went by Gordon Bennett to distinguish himself from his father, was a well-known socialite (modern tabloids might label him a ‘playboy’) who spent much of his time - and his father’s money - enjoying the good life and launching motor and air racing events in Europe. He is even listed in the Guinness Book of World Records under ‘greatest engagement faux pas’ after his engagement to Caroline May was broken off after a drunken incident involving his potential in-laws’ fireplace at their New York mansion, but the less said of that the better.

Suffice to say, his antics became well known, and his name forever associated with shocking or unexpected events. He died in 1918, but his name truly does live on.

Recycle for free

Verwoodians on Waste are holding their third Freecycle event on June 4. To join in, people need to register with the group, then put their unwanted items safely outside their home, perhaps on a table in their driveway or garden, from 10am on that day. As it’s a ‘freecycle’ event, no selling is allowed and everything put out must be free for people to take. An interactive map of properties taking part will be published before the event. The group said that at its last event, around 80 per cent of items put out went to a new home.

Calorie-controlled coronation cuisine!

Here’s a tasty, low-calorie recipe fit for a coronation, from Nicki Edwards - The Cambridge Lady

Serves: 2

Prep time: 15 Minutes

Cook time: 12 Minutes

Calories: 400kcal per serving

Total Fat: 13.5g

Ingredients spray oil

100g skinned white fish fillets, eg cod or haddock

200g large peeled raw king prawns, defrosted juice of 1 lime

a few sprigs of coriander, chopped

4 mini flour tortillas

a handful of crisp lettuce leaves, eg Cos or Little Gem

1 small ripe avocado, peeled, stoned and cubed

salt and freshly-ground black pepper lime wedges, for squeezing

Tomato salsa:

2 juicy tomatoes, diced

¼ red onion, diced

1 red chilli, diced

1 garlic clove, crushed

a handful of coriander, finely chopped

grated zest and juice of ½ lime

Method: Make the tomato salsa: mix all

the ingredients together in a small bowl, seasoning to taste with salt and pepper. Lightly spray a non-stick frying pan with oil and set over a medium to high heat.

Cook the fish fillets for 8–10 minutes, turning halfway, until seared and golden on the

outside and cooked through. Cut into chunks and sprinkle with the lime juice and coriander.

Add the prawns to the hot pan and cook for two minutes, turning halfway, or until pink and succulent.

Mix with the white fish and season lightly with salt and pepper.

Meanwhile, warm the tortillas in a griddle pan or a hot oven. Divide the lettuce, avocado and seafood between the tortillas and top with the tomato salsa. Fold over or roll up, then serve with any leftover salsa plus lime wedges for squeezing.

Top Tip: You can use crisp iceberg lettuce leaves instead of tortillas and warm them in a medium oven for 3 minutes keeping them crispy. This will reduce the calories per wrap by approx 70cal) Yummy! Call me - Nicki Edwards - The Cambridge Lady Mobile: 07904 331 589

Expert treatment for your special carpet

Steeped in three generations of history, Bakhtiyar has long been a respected leader in the Persian and Oriental hand-knotted carpet trade.

Headed by internationallyrenowned carpet expert Masoud Mazaheri-Asadi, he and his son Koroush continue to carve a new path for the industry. Spend time with Bakhtiyar’s specialists and you will quickly discover their passion and love for the craftsmanship of the carpets they source. As an authoritative figure within the industry, Masoud is often invited to share his expertise and insider knowledge with media outlets such as the BBC to discuss the ever-changing market. He also advises auction houses, insurance firms and institutions to identify and value Persian rugs and carpets. But we would be remiss to say that is all we do, we carry out general carpet repairs for

clients, whilst also working with many historic organisations to clean and restore carpets, bringing them back to life, in some cases removing 200-yearold stains.

Our team of highly-skilled cleaners and restorers, based in our London Warehouse, carry out repairs using the traditional knotting methods to fully restore rugs to their former glory, taking wool dated from the same period as the rug, to perfectly match the rest of the piece.

KING CHARLES III CORONATION

The biggest celebration of the century

The Kingdom is expected to unite in celebration this weekend for the crowning of the new monarch.

On May 6th, King Charles III and Queen Consort will process from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey for the ceremony, at 11am.

The day will be a blaze of pageantry for the first coronation since that of Queen Elizabeth II on June 2nd, 1953.

Their Majesties will be travelling in the Diamond Jubilee State Coach, created for Queen Elizabeth II to commemorate her Diamond Jubilee in 2012.

Featuring a gilded crown on the top, the coach was carved from oak from HMS Victory, and has an interior inlaid with samples of woods, metals and other materials from buildings and places with specific connections to Britain and its history, including Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace, Windsor Castle and the Palace of Holyrood house, St Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey, as well as historic ships, such as the Mary Rose. The King’s Procession, accompanied by The Sovereign’s Escort of the Household Cavalry, will depart Buckingham Palace through the Centre Gate, and proceed down The Mall, passing through Admiralty Arch and south of King Charles I Island, down Whitehall and along Parliament Street.

It will travel around the east and south sides of Parliament Square to Broad Sanctuary to arrive at the Sanctuary of Westminster Abbey,

where the Coronation Service will begin. Once complete, the Coronation Procession will be much larger in scale, taking the same route in reverse.

It will include Armed Forces from across the Commonwealth and the British Overseas Territories, and all Services of the Armed Forces of the United Kingdom, alongside The Sovereign’s Bodyguard and Royal Watermen. This time, Their Majesties will travel in the Gold State Coach, last seen during the Pageant of the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in June 2022.

First used by King George III to travel to

WISHING KING CHARLES III A LONG AND HAPPY REIGN

the State Opening of Parliament in 1762, the coach has been used at every Coronation since that of William IV in 1831. Upon returning to Buckingham Palace following the Coronation Service, Their Majesties will receive a Royal Salute from the United Kingdom and Commonwealth Armed Forces who have been on parade that day.

The Royal Salute will be followed by three cheers from the assembled service personnel, as a tribute from the Armed Forces on parade to The King and The Queen Consort on the day of Their Majesties’ Coronation.

Prayers, Pimms and splat the rat

Coronations, choirs and cuppas go hand-in-hand, so where better to toast the King’s new crown than at a family-friendly event that combines all three, and more?

A procession of afternoon activities planned for Saturday, May 7, at St Michael’s Church, Colehill, include a treasure hunt, splat the rat, hoopla, hoop the duck and a mini art competition; the finished artworks will appear on a wall of fame.

Charles

The event will end in rousing style with a ‘Sung Celebration’ of hymns from the UK’s four countries and the new Coronation Hymn with a performance of Handel’s Zadok

The Priest by the choir closing proceedings.

Any donations will be split

between church funds, to help provide a warm space and a community café, and Christian Aid.

PS. There will be Pimms... stmichaels-church-colehill. co.uk.

Be part of town’s history of royal celebrations

Memories make history. Anecdotes, facts, images and eyewitness accounts all act as reminders of significant events, and thanks to a souvenir programme marking Wimborne’s King Charles III Coronation celebrations on May 7, 2023, the town already has its first keepsake of what will be one of the most momentous occasions of our modern monarchy.

As well as royal images, including a photo of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip being driven through the town, there are fascinating photos of Wimborne life over the years.

The brochure, by Wimborne BID, outlines the events - or the family day out as they call it - which will run from 11am to 7pm on the day and include the national Coronation Big Lunch, live music at the Stage in the Square, children’s

entertainment and a quiz show.

In keeping with celebratory theme and the sense of nostalgia that these royal occasions evoke, line-up of live music travels the decades, with the likes of a 1950s frolic with the Aphrodite Singers, a Sixties tribute to the other king, Elvis, Eighties sounds from Rubiks (sic) Kube and a closing current-day performance by the BH2 at 6pm.

Fun and daftness for kids comes in the shape of Little Gizmos, characters Poppy and Stich and a steady stream of face painting and crafting activities.

The brochure also contains a full run down of scheduled events at the Minster Church and the actual coronation itself will be streamed at the Minster, the Café on the Square and other venues.

You can collectyour Coronation Souvenir programme from Allendale House, Wimborne.

KING CHARLES III CORONATION

How to help the community

Community volunteering has such a positive and often obvious impact, affecting the neighbourhoods and lives of everyone from those who do it, to those who benefit from it. Since a pivotal part of the coronation celebrations is the Big Help Out, an endeavour aimed at inspiring people to volunteer, why not visit Wimborne Minster Town Council’s free Volunteers Information Day on Monday, 8 May and see if you could help?

Deputy Mayor, Cllr Diann March, explains, “In line with Buckingham Palace’s Big Help Out, we want to highlight the positive

impact volunteering has on our community and across the nation and help attract new volunteers. “We are inviting local charity organisations and groups to come and set up a stall, free of charge, in the Town Square, High Street and Minster Green to promote the work they do in our community, encourage people to try volunteering and to join work being undertaken to support our residents.”

There’s free parking and a road closure from 8 am to 6 pm to facilitate the event that runs from 10 am to 4 pm. More information from office@wimborne.gov.uk and on 01202 881655.

n Celebrations for the Coronation of King Charles III will be going on all day across Christchurch, Bournemouth, and Poole over the bank holiday weekend, May 6-8. While some readers will remember the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, for many, this will be the first time they’ll experience such ceremony. Conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury at Westminster Abbey on Saturday, May 6, the crowning will officially mark Charles III’s ascension to the throne. As well as national events, like the Coronation Big Lunch, it’s hoped that neighbours and communities will gather to eat, drink and be merry.

Over the entire weekend, BCP is

encouraging everyone to get in the community spirit and come together to watch the events that mark this historic occasion on giant screens.

On Saturday, May 6, watch the King being crowned live, as the official service is streamed into Bournemouth’s Lower Gardens; The Quomps at Christchurch; and Poole’s Baiter Park

On Sunday, May 7, join the big lunch by taking a picnic to one of the screen locations, where you can later catch the special Coronation Concert live from Windsor, on the big screens. The council is installing the large screens with funding from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport which spent more than £1million on them.

Big plans for a big lunch? Keep it simple

Thinking about hosting a Big Lunch to celebrate the Coronation but don’t know where to start?

The secret is to keep it simple. Make the first move by bagging a free Big Lunch Pack, invite some people, mention food and the details and ideas should naturally take shape. Here are a few tips for a hassle-free knees up:

1 Pick a date. The Coronation weekend is ideal, but you can choose any time in June. Lunchtime no good? No problem - have a fairylit Lunar Lunch instead. Get the feelers out, save a date that suits everyone, and get your Big lunch pack here: edenprojectcommunities.com/ big-lunch/get-your-big-lunchpack.

2 Use the pack’s invitations to invite pals and neighbours.

3 As a group, decide on music, decorations and games (there’s a ‘conversation menu’ in your pack that could be good for getting to know people). Make bespoke bunting to match the vibe - there are instructions and a free template here: edenprojectcommunities.com/ ideas/how-to-make-bunting.

4 Food is good. Get everyone to bring something sweet or savoury to the table. Check out the special coronation recipes - including

Bake-Off champ, Nadia Sawalha’s Union Jack cakehere: edenprojectcommunities.com/ recipes/coronation-recipes.

5 If the weather’s iffy? Plan in advance - lots of people have gazebos, big umbrellas, or pop-up marquees in their shed. If anyone has a clear garage (good luck with that) open it up, or if there’s a clubhouse, community or church hall nearby, have it on standby.

6 Fundraise. The Big Lunch is a year-round initiative and lots of

people use it to raise funds for good causes. Perhaps do something for a local charity, since the whole thing’s about community spirit?

l Wimborne Minster church is also celebrating:.

On Friday evening at 7.30pm there will be a Civic Service which will be attended by dignitaries including the High Sheriff of Dorset Colin. The Coronation will be shown on large screens inside the Minster followed by the Town Crier Chris Brown giving the Coronation Cry on the Minster Green, followed by a full peal on the Minster Bells starting at 2.30pm.

During Services on the Sunday there will be special prayers for The King and Queen. Over lunchtime The Minster will join with the Town by holding the Big Lunch on The Minster

Monday sees the ‘Volunteer Day’ being run by the Town Council and there will be Charity Stalls on the Minster Green.

The Minster interior will be suitably decorated. All are welcome to join the services and events.

The Crown Jewels come to Hanford

Rufus Bird, who was Surveyor of the Queen’s Works of Art for over a decade with curatorial responsibility for the Crown Jewels, came to Hanford to give two talks –one to the pupils and one later to parents and members of the public - about the Crown Jewels and their role in coronations of new monarchs.

Rufus’s talk was full of historical detail and fascinating anecdotes about the nation’s heirlooms that make up the Coronation Regalia and the audiences were dazzled by the sheer number of gemstones in these priceless artefacts and interested to hear about their cultural, historical, and symbolic value. We were particularly struck by the St Edward’s Crown, which is only used to crown a new king or queen during the coronation ceremony.

Rufus said: “It’s a timely moment to discuss the Crown Jewels, which will be on display at the King and Queen’s Coronation on May 6. The wonderful and

extraordinary history of the stones is compelling and the Hanford girls asked lots of interesting and thoughtful questions.”

The Hanford girls, and the

many people who attended the evening, left feeling thoroughly well prepared and knowledgeable about all things sparkly, ahead of the upcoming Coronation.

Road closures for travel improvements

The next stage of work on the sustainable travel improvements from Poole to the Wimborne and Ferndown area is due to continue until the end of the year, according to Dorset Council.

During the works, which started on Wimborne Road East on April 24 this year, the eastbound carriageway will be closed in rolling sections between West Moors Rd and Stanfield Rd.

What’s that coming over?

The world’s biggest monster truck will be gate-crushing its way into the Dorset County Show on September 2 and 3.

Big Pete is the world’s only real monster truck.

At 16ft tall and 12ft wide, weighing an impressive 7.5 tonnes, it’s able to crush anything in its path including entire cars. And wait until you see this monster jump 15 feet in the air! This mechanical giant will be joined by his partner in crushing crime – The Grim Reaper. A little lighter at 4.5 tonnes but still a heavyweight show-off, the Grim Reaper is a modern-styled monster truck, even with a hint of showbiz sparkle in its bodywork. Revving their engines, squashing cars, performing tricks and doing some damage in the main ring, these mechanical monsters of mayhem need no introduction. You will hear them before you see them!

Nicki Ralph, chairman of the show, which is organised by Dorchester Agricultural Society, said: “We can’t wait to welcome Big Pete and The Grim Reaper to the county show.

“This exciting, adrenaline-filled display will certainly leave a lasting impression on all our visitors, no matter their age”.

Alongside monster trucks

crushing cars, Dorset County Show has announced an exciting refresh to its annual event. This includes a new layout to explore, and a host of new

attractions including Dorset Axemen where you can see thrilling axe-cutting battles in action as teams race against the clock.

The show is also expanding promotion of Great British Food & Drink with a special focus on Dorset produce via a new food and drink area.

In recent years, local crafts have become more prominent with many people taking up new hobbies and the show hopes to showcase these individuals with the introduction of new trading opportunities.

James Cox, organiser of the show said: “The show, like us all, has gone through a lot in recent years and therefore now is the right

time to review ideas and plans for the future.

“This year, our adaptions truly ensure we showcase agriculture, countryside, rural life and the incredible food, drink and crafts produced within it. “The show will put the consumer in contact with the producer while celebrating everything rural Dorset has to offer.”

The Dorset County Show takes place on Saturday and Sunday, September 2 and 3. Adult tickets are on sale now for just £17 (until June 1), and children go free. The Tickets are priced lower than 2022 up until the show weekend itself.

You can book via the new website dorsetcountyshow.co.uk.

The first closure will be between Martins Drive and Queens Road with temporary traffic lights and an eastbound diversion being put in place. More details on the scheme can be found at: orlo.uk/ajz0A.

Exhibit at fete

Sandleheath Community Association is holding a village fete on Saturday, June 17, and is looking for local business people and crafts people to exhibit.

More details are avaiable from sandleheath village@ gmail.com.

More helpers for youth club

Could you help young people in West Moors by joining their youth club committee?

The group is asking for fresh faces to help with its twiceyearly fundraisers, which include Carols on the Petwyn and Movie Under The Stars. The committee says it tends to meet a few times a year for routine matters but more frequently in the run-up to its events.

A spokesman said: “We need passionate people willing to lend a helping hand and if they have experience in organising events, fundraising, or working with young people, so much the better.”

For more details, contact Ray Hilton Garner on 01202 871757 or at berringtonhouse@talktalk.net.

Political round-up

Residents looking after their community

The importance of residents’ associations in contributing to a sense of local community and helping establish local priorities for action cannot be overstated. In Longham the very identity of this historic village was in danger of being lost due to its absorption within Ferndown. It was, therefore, a pleasure to be able to participate at a recent meeting, organised by Cllr Julie Robinson, with representatives from Longham Village Residents’ Association.

The revived association has already helped prevent the inappropriate development of the Kings Arms, a former watering hole for Augustus John.

It has also intervened to protect a valuable right of way for residents to Longham Lakes. In so doing, the association has highlighted the unacceptable backlog which there now is in deciding applications under the Definitive Map Modification Process. The volume and speed

of traffic remains a hot topic. But Julie was able to report on the implementation of the 30mph limit from Longham Bridge to Ringwood and agreed to make enquiries about whether Ham Lane would also be made subject to such a speed restriction. Among other concerns raised was the use of disposable

barbecues, particularly along the Stour Valley Path. The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is commissioning research to examine the role that disposable barbecues play in wildfires.

In the meantime, local authorities have powers to restrict the use of disposable barbeques using a Public Spaces Protection Order made under Section 59 of the Anti-Social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act 2014.

Dorset Council has already used this power and I have now written to the council suggesting that the area around the Stour Valley Path should be included.

It was good to hear that the association is working with Litter Free Dorset with regular litter picks and a raising of awareness around other environmental issues including the problem of single use plastic tree guards.

The extent of that problem is much greater than many imagine. It is, therefore, good news that the Woodland Trust no longer uses these and is developing non-plastic alternatives.

Residents from Hampreston Village were also at the meeting.

Although Hampreston, with its historic church, popular school and conservation area status, has a strong identity, because of its small size it can feel ignored by the council.

It is, therefore, good news that Julie Robinson has agreed to pursue some of Hampreston’s issues with Dorset Council. Following up on the issue of deforestation, I have now heard back from the chairman of the Forestry Commission. Although his response raises more questions than it answers, he has conceded that ‘heath is a man-made habitat’.

I look forward to taking up his invitation for a site visit soon.

Can the Tories restore their own sanity?

The shine really has gone off the Tories after 14 years in power.

When our sitting Tory MP Simon Hoare pens an article slating the Tory critics of the Commons Privilege Committee for daring to find ex-PM

Boris Johnston culpable and ending up being called a ‘kangaroo court’ by a number of prominent Tories for their conclusion!

I have met Simon Hoare a number of times and have always found him to be courteous and helpful, so why the signs of Civil War within their ranks?

Perhaps it is the dithering nature over the departure of the Justice Secretary and Deputy PM, Dominic Raab who was found to have been a bully throughout his past ministerial career over several

civil service departments and yet the PM Rishi Sunak just could not bring himself to wield the governmental knife to his main political ally. Or maybe it is because the former PM Liz Truss (remember her?) just will not lie down and accept her political denouement. She was recently giving the Margaret Thatcher lecture in the States where she claimed she will be proved right and that her policies were ‘opposed by a conspiracy of all her domestic political opponents and the IMF, the EU and even the American President, Joe Biden.

I am sure Rishi Sunak wishes she would lock herself in a darkened room for some time to cool off - rather like her sacked Chancellor, (Kame) Kwasi Kwarteng.

By the way, does he still

receive his MP’s salary whilst he is in purdah?

Meanwhile, ‘Cruella’ Suella Braverman the Home Secretary still believes the utter chaos seen at Dover over the past Bank Holiday was nothing to do with Brexit.

Even a prominent Tory Party apparatchik apologised for this

ridiculous lapse of sanity. She might have come second in her public spat with Gary Lineker and now she appears to be alienating the voters who backed Brexit but are now having second thoughts as it has turned out to be such a disaster!

Perhaps if Rishi Sunak were to have his attention drawn to the case for the striking junior doctors, nurses, teachers and all the other public service workers whose wages and salaries are falling so far behind the food price index of almost 20% instead of always claiming that his policy is to ‘reduce inflation’ then he might be able to restore some sanity to his failing Government. All of the above can only lead to a Labour win at the next General Election and the installation of a Keir Starmer Government.

The fiscal benefits of a healthier population

Last month I was delighted to welcome the Liberal Democrat Leader, Sir Ed Davey to Dorset for a visit to Julia’s House Children’s Hospice.

Ed was a young carer for his parents and, after they died, for his grandmother and has a son with severe disabilities. I worked for another Dorset disability charity that provides respite and day care, so I know families who use their services and have seen their struggles. After a tour of their stunning facilities, including a chance to have a play with the sensory toys, we chatted with chief executive Martin Edwards and parent ambassador Emma Jerram about their hopes for the future.

We learned about the impactboth physically and emotionally - on families of providing care around the clock and how mothers of children with lifelimiting conditions have an increased risk of heart problems

as well as increased mental ill-health.

Family breakdown is also common in families who have to deal not only with the emotional challenges of caring for their child, but also the financial struggles.

It was so lovely to see photos of the founders Mike Wise, a local Liberal Democrat councillor, and Julia Perks – the nurse whose vision he was able to deliver – in the hallway and to understand how minor changes in the way respite is prioritised and delivered can make such a difference to families. So many of us will be family carers, sometimes referred to as unpaid carers, in our lives. Whether for parents, partners or, tragically, for a child with complex needs or a lifelimiting condition there is little recognition of the impact across every part of life and this is why the Liberal Democrats continue to talk about this

forgotten area of work. We are pleased that Government has recognised the need for a Department of Health and Social Care, but it is now time to deliver real change and put care on a much stronger footing. It makes financial sense too - care in communities is less expensive than a hospital bed - but there are wider financial benefits.

Respite could mean parents can stay in employment and stay healthier.

Parents and siblings who are well, can not only work and spend money in the economy, but also be a smaller burden on the health service.

We need a joined-up approach by Government around the fiscal benefits of a healthier, more active population, whether its in improving homes and fuel poverty to reduce damp-related illness, improving air quality to reduce asthma, or providing respite for carers. I was deeply moved by our visit, and I know Ed was too, and I am confident that whatever policies the Liberal Democrats prepare for the next election manifesto the needs of those who provide care –whether as part of their job or through their family life - will be integral.

Book your booster jab for the spring

Eligible people are being urged to book their Covid-19 booster jabs this spring.

More than 75,000 people in Dorset are eligible for the vaccine top-up, and appointments are available to book now.

Over-75s, people aged five and over who have a weakened immune system and older adult care home residents are all entitled to a free vaccination to protect themselves from the virus.

Dorset’s vaccination teams have begun administering spring booster doses at clinics across the county, with appointments available through April, May and June.

Eligible residents will receive a message from the NHS reminding them to book an appointment via the National Booking Service, or by calling 119.

If you think you should be eligible for a vaccine but have not been invited to have a jab, you can check online or self-declare via the National

Booking Service.

A list of vaccine centres is available at www. dorsethealthcare.nhs.uk/covid19-vaccination-service.

Paul Bolton, clinical services manager for the Dorset Covid-19 vaccination service, said: “Appointments are bookable across the county at more than 30 clinics in community hospitals, pharmacies and some GP surgeries.

“Eligible residents will have

easy access to the latest vaccine at a local clinic near to them.

“We have capacity for everyone, and they have until June 30 to get a jab, so there’s no need to rush. But it is important to book in advance.

“Our roving vaccination teams are working alongside our clinics to boost more than 12,000 of our most vulnerable people in care homes, as well as eligible housebound patients.”

After June 30, primary doses (first and second jabs) of the

Covid-19 vaccine will no longer be available, except for people at higher risk, who will be able to book them during the annual spring and autumn programmes. Anyone who has yet to receive their first or second Covid-19 jabs is encouraged to book an appointment via the National Booking Service at a local clinic.

Dr Ravin Ramtohal, lead GP for the vaccination programme in Dorset, said:

“Covid-19 is still circulating in our communities. Vaccines remain an important part in people staying well from existing and new strains of the virus. Especially for those that are more likely to become very poorly from catching it.

“I would strongly encourage everyone to ensure they are up to date with their vaccines to protect themselves.”

For more information on vaccinations visit nhs.uk and search for vaccinations.

If you do not have online access, call 119 to book your appointment.

Smile please for photography auction

A collection of vintage and later cameras are estimated to sell for £10,000 when they go under the Charterhouse gavel in their specialist auction of cameras, photographs and photographyrelated items on Thursday, June 1.

“Despite most people using the camera on their smart phones there is still a huge number of people who prefer a traditional camera with a film,” said Richard Bromell of Charterhouse.

The collection, from a deceased estate near Swanage, has been amassed over many years.

The owner, a keen amateur photographer, had a particular interest in 35mm single lens reflex (SLR) cameras including Leica, Nikon, Olympus, Kodak, Pentax and Rollieflex.

Dating from the 1930s through to the late 20th century they are each estimated to sell from £50 up to £2,000.

Charterhouse are now accepting further entries for their June specialist auctions including cameras and photographyrelated items, coins, medals & stamps, antiques and interiors, classic cars and classic motorcycles.

Makers market and music on a sunny day

Busker Ben Poore kept us entertained at the Artisan Makers Market in Wimborne on a lovely day last week with his great sounds on our way into the event. There was a warm welcome from the many stall holders inside displaying items they have made. An array of local, talented makers who create many handmade products to see and buy, were kept refreshed by a café serving most welcome refreshments.

Food & Drink Chocolate finger cheesecake

As you know, if you read my column regularly, my husband likes his desserts!

I saw this one on the internet and thought that I could give it a go. Like an idiot, I forgot to save the picture of mine that I took, so apologies, the picture is from the internet.

I looked at it and thought, how hard can this be?!

The recipe its self is easy, but getting the chocolate fingers to stand up was a nightmare.

I could get five in a row, added the sixth and they all came tumbling down. Another go, got to seven this time, and again they all came tumbling down!!

My husband came into the kitchen, concerned about the amount of shouting and swearing that was going on!

As all men do, he says, ‘you must be doing it wrong, here let me have a go’. So he gets six to stand up, and then the seventh one makes all the others fall down! ‘This is a stupid recipe’ he says!!

Then I got it sussed. I made the biscuit base up, poured it in the tin and then pushed the chocolate fingers in so that they stood up!!

Tadah!! It looked just like the picture. The rest was easy and it tasted great, although it was very chocolaty. My

grandchildren had a very small slice and they were bouncing off the walls for hours! So, if you want a ‘relatively’ easy dessert that looks impressive, then give it a go, just don’t give children too much of it!!

Ingredients

Base:

300g Digestive biscuits, crushed 160g unsalted butter, melted 51 Chocolate fingers (approx.)

Cheesecake:

350ml Double cream, cold

500g Cream cheese

120g Icing sugar

250g milk chocolate, melted & cooled slightly

Topping

100ml double cream, hot 200g milk chocolate/choc chips

Tin size: 8” springform pan (9” is fine, but you need more chocolate fingers)

Method

Mix together the crushed digestives and melted butter until combined.

Line the edge of your tin with chocolate fingers, carefully spooning your base into the middle.

Press the base down firmly and pop it in the fridge.

Pour double cream into a bowl and whisk until it reaches stiff peaks.

In another bowl, whisk together cream cheese and icing sugar until smooth. Add melted chocolate and whisk until combined.

Add whipped cream and fold this in, then spoon it onto your base and smooth it out. Refrigerate for at least five hours. For the topping, pour hot cream over chocolate chunks and stir until smooth. Let it cool slightly and then pour over your cheesecake. Refrigerate for at least two hours.

Entries taste great at bake-off challenge

Lockyer’s Middle School held its very own bake-off challenge, modelled on the popular TV programme.

The event was launched by cookery teacher, Mrs Shivas and pupils were invited to bake a cake of their choice, linking the design and theme of their cake to a celebration of their choosing.

Sixty pupils entered, together creating a stunning array of cakes, but after much deliberation eight finalists were selected. These pupils had six hours to recreate their masterpiece in the Great Lockyer’s Bake Off final.

There was the usual tension as mishaps and adjustments were made under time pressure!

The finished cakes were outstanding. Cake designs ranged between Easter, wedding, baby gender reveals, bonfire night celebrations and much more.

The intricate decorating designs would have challenged any professional baker and all of the finalists were outstanding and a real credit to themselves and the school.

The judges Miss Dufek (headteacher), Mr Ayling (headteacher of St Michael’s Middle School, Mr Wilson (site manager) and Mrs Heckford (a representative of Friends of

Lockyer’s) had an extremely tough job sampling each cake and discussing the celebration story behind the cake before deliberating and announcing their final decision to a crowd of supporting parents and family.

Congratulations go to Flo in Year 7, who was the winning baker with her bonfireinspired chocolate cake. This was closely followed by Charlotte in Year 8, with her multi-skilled cake-pop and meringue cake.

Walford Mill Café reopens

Wimborne’s historic Walford Mill has reopened to the public as Little Pickle at The Mill.

Andrew Spong and Karen Merryweather Spong who established their Little Pickle Deli Café in Boscombe more than 11 years ago, have acquired the riverside café facilities that have previously proved so popular with visitors and residents alike.

Wimborne’s mayor Carol Butter and town crier Chris Brown are scheduled to be in attendance for the opening.

Initially open 10am-4pm Wednesday to Sunday in line

with the Mill’s public access, Karen and Andrew have plans for the café playing an integrated role in the local community and said: “We are super excited to be opening the doors of Little Pickle at the Mill.

“The craft centre is in a beautiful part of Dorset, already with lots to offer for visitors.

“We want to make sure that people come back time and time again. We aim to serve as much homemade and locally-sourced food as we can and are looking forward to getting started.”

A huge thank-you was extended to the sponsors: Friends of Lockyer’s - who donated Hobbycraft vouchers - and Durable UK who funded the aprons, chopping boards and boxes of cooking goodies for the winners.

The Great Lockyer’s Bake Off will be eagerly anticipated next year!

Nominate charities for chance of £1000

People are being encouraged to nominate Dorset charities for the chance to win £1,000.

The Benefact Group’s Movement for Good Awards are open to nominations, with charities being entered into up to three draws to win £1,000 of funding. Now in its fifth year, the Movement for Good Awards will hand out more than £1m to causes across the UK and Ireland. Since the awards began, people in Dorset have submitted more than 19,300 nominations, with 28 county charities benefiting from donations. Winners are drawn at random and the more times a charity is nominated the more chance it has of being selected.

A total of 150 winning charities will be announced from June 1, with more in September and December.

Mark Hews, group chief executive at Benefact Group, said: “We are immensely proud to be supporting many hundreds of charities through our Movement for Good Awards for the fifth year running.

“We know that £1,000 can make a huge difference so we’re asking that people give a minute of their time to nominate a cause they care about to receive an award.

“Owned by a charity ourselves, charitable giving is at the heart of what we do and all of our available profits go to good causes. “With financial strain continuing to impact many households the Movement for Good Awards represents a great way for people to continue to support causes close to their hearts.

“Any charity can win no matter how large or small and even with just one nomination. So find a minute, jump online and nominate – because that small amount of time is invaluable for charities.”

A muddy marvellous way to raise funds for charity

Get ready for some muddy good fun! Diverse Abilities, Dorset’s disability charity, is thrilled to be supported by the Dorset Mud Run.

Held at Stock Gaylard, near Sturminster Newton, the Dorset Mud Run will take place on Saturday, May 20, 2023. Runners are challenged to take on 6km of challenging and fun obstacles, including swinging over ditches, a scramble up mud hills, crawling under cargo nets and wading through ponds.

There’s plenty of mud and stunning scenery and the course finishes on the best obstacle course in the UK.

There’s a bar and plenty of food stands to enjoy a well-deserved feast once the course has been tackled.

Participants taking part for Diverse Abilities will receive a discount for entry, as well as the charity’s support with their fundraising.

Every penny raised will support the charity’s Splash Appeal to build a desperately needed hydrotherapy pool for people with profound, lifelong, disabilities at The Beehive, the charity’s activity and therapy centre.

The charity supports hundreds of families affected by disability in Dorset every year. Helen Mortimer, head of fundraising at Diverse Abilities said: “We are incredibly grateful to the Dorset Mud Run organisers for supporting Diverse Abilities through their event and giving people who are fundraising for us an entry discount. “Taking part in this event is a great way to fundraise for the Splash Appeal – get muddy whilst raising money to build a warm water pool for people who otherwise have no opportunity whatsoever to get in the water and achieve the incredible health benefits it brings.”

Art classes inspire learners at care home

Budding artists at a Dorset dementia care home have begun producing work under the guidance of a professional.

Johanna Kennedy-Wall is a New Forestbased artist who specialises in murals, portraits, and sculpture.

When she gave a one-hour taster session at Colten Care’s Fernhill home in Longham near Bournemouth, staff were impressed with how much joy and inspiration it gave participants, so they invited her back.

Johanna has now started monthly art classes at the home involving a range of media including watercolours, pastels and acrylics. “We’re stimulating lots of conversations and triggering memories,” said Johanna, who is renowned for her equine art. “Some people were a little nervous to begin with but I could see them warming up towards the art and letting themselves go. “The atmosphere is calm and engaged and everyone gets something out of it.”

Johanna was recommended to approach care homes when she gave a session for volunteers at the not-for-profit group In Jolly Good Company. This was set up to help alleviate the physical and mental issues caused by

loneliness and isolation through friendship, joy and a sense of community.

Some of its clients live with dementia or memory loss and her students felt she could make a positive difference to those at care home experiencing the same issues.

“I find the care home classes really satisfying and enjoyable,” said Johanna.

When we have an acute injury, it’s pretty normal to feel stressed!

However in reality, this stress is not going to help us heal, and can actually affect our healing time.

First youngsters to receive new award

The first young people in the UK have completed the OPT Award at Langside School in Poole, run by Diverse Abilities.

The award is a new scheme which has been devised for young people with learning disabilities aged 16 and over in their transition into adulthood.

It gives students the opportunity to complete three strands: The Helping Award, The Personal, Social and Emotional Wellbeing Award, and The 48 Hour Challenge. Students focus on one strand each term with activities such as caring for animals, gardening, hydrotherapy, yoga and more. The challenge element of the award is to take on two days of activities these young people would not normally experience, and an overnight stay away from home.

The three students who

completed the award are Angel, Amelia and Alicia, all in Options Class at Langside School.

They have prepared a threecourse meal, spent the day at a high ropes course and enjoyed a sensory walk through the gardens and along the beach. The 48-hour challenge involved a sleep-over at the

Dorset HealthCare changes guidance on face coverings

The wearing of masks at Dorset HealthCare sites is no longer mandatory. With the success of the vaccination roll-out, and a reduction in cases of COVID-19, Dorset HealthCare are no longer asking visitors and staff to wear masks in public and clinical areas, in line with the approach also being taken in local acute hospitals. Mask wearing is now a personal choice for anyone working at, or visiting sites, and masks will still be made available for anyone wishing to take extra precautions. Masks may still be required in some areas to protect patients who have lowered immunity or respiratory illnesses. These areas will have notices on entrance doors to advise visitors.

If you are unwell with

a raised temperature, coughing, sneezing, diarrhoea or vomiting, the advice to avoid coming into Dorset HealthCare buildings remains.

Staff will continue to observe good hand hygiene and wipe down all shared spaces, in line with IPC recommendations, to minimise the spread of infections within a clinical environment.

Professor Dawn Dawson, chief nursing officer, said: “Thank you to everyone for following the previous guidance and wearing masks for such an extended period of time.

“Patient safety remains our priority and we will continue to take precautions in line with infection prevention and control guidelines to protect all visitors, staff and patients.”

school where the girls enjoyed each other’s company, films and a pampering session. Lisa Noel, Amelia’s mum commented: “The OPT Award has given Amelia the opportunity to get out into the community visiting places she wouldn’t normally have access to. It’s helped her get ready for change.

“Thank you to everyone who has made award possible; I recommend to any family.” Recently, we watched the three girls, who are all

best friends, collect their certificates from the Governor of the school.

This was a very proud and special moment.

“They had previously obtained their bronze in Duke of Edinburgh, but this award was much more tailored to youngsters with profound and multiple learning disability, like Amelia.”

VIP soccer experience for care clients

A resident from Care South’s Castle Dene care home in Bournemouth and a client from Care South at Home Bournemouth were delighted to represent the not-forprofit charity at AFC Bournemouth’s player kit sponsor evening last month at Vitality Stadium.

The evening was possible thanks to Care South’s sponsorship of Illia Zabarnyi, a Ukrainian who plays as a defender for AFC Bournemouth and the Ukrainian national team.

Clients Eileenand Ian were accompanied by staff members, Lesley Wheal and Jane Legg.

Prior to dining, there were photo opportunities and conversation with Zabarnyi.

Jimmy Glass, a former England goalkeeper, was the event host for the evening and conducted a number of player interviews, as well as presenting a fun quiz for all. Castle Dene resident Eileen, said: “I had an absolutely wonderful evening. I would have never expected to meet the players firsthand. Everyone was so lovely, and it was wonderful interacting with the players, especially Illia.”

Care South client Ian added: “It was great

fun and a fabulous evening. I enjoyed meeting the players as I have seen their shirt numbers on the television, but it was great seeing their faces and putting their numbers to faces.

“It was a great evening getting to see and meet a mixture of players from Steve Fletcher to Illia.”

Simon Bird, chief executive of Care South,

said: “What a fantastic experience this was for both Ian and Eileen and Jane and Lesley, who kindly accompanied them. Care South is delighted to be a partner with AFC Bournemouth, together we run numerous on-going initiatives.

“The partnership enriches the lives of residents’ and clients in our care, and this is just another excellent example of that.”

The highs and lows of fostering

Footprints fostering community – a strong support network

We strive to empower everyone within our community, with a voice that is heard and feelings that are supported.

“There are always highs and sometimes some really tough lows, but each one brings new rewards and new challenges”

We provide the highest level of support to each and every carer regardless of their placement status.

That is why we ensure that support groups are focused on the carers; it is a time to chat, express their feelings, and receive advice.

Advertising feature

The hustle and bustle of a busy household can provide so much joy and fulfilment, seeing others achieve or just sharing experiences over a heart-warming breakfast. Yet, that does not mean there are no challenges involved, with any household regardless of size and make up has its own unique challenges – and that is the same for fostering households.

With low caseloads, our supervising social workers will know you personally and help you through your fostering journey.

One fostering family expresses their gratitude to the support of footprints social workers:

These monthly support groups continuously prove beneficial for our carers: “Footprints are very supportive.

“They have a monthly support group where you mix with other carers and there is a lot of training on offer”

“Our needs are met through the support of our supervising social worker who listens to us, guides us and advocates for us when we need it.”

In our small group of carers at Footprints, no one is a stranger meaning you get to know everyone.

When children come into your life, whether that be short term or long term you know as a carer that, at some point, it is more than likely this child may move on to a more permanent home. It can be emotional to see a youngster move on but our carers highlight that it is nice to see when they become settled and happy in a new home. One carer notes such moment is “a high and a low together! … A high as we know we have made a difference in their lives, but a low, because they are leaving you”

This is not only a difficult time for the carer, the child must also get used to a new home, and new guardians.

There can be a great sense of collaboration and support among carers that most of the time are going through similar experiences.

That is why Footprints pay close attention to this transition, giving the support required for all individuals. Over the last years, more special guardianships have been approved, allowing carers to look after youngsters on a more permanent basis, this is a great outcome that Footprints are proud of.

Engaging the whole network of foster carers within Footprints goes beyond the carers themselves.

Our community encompasses the children at the heart of all families, both birth children and foster children are recognised with fun days out and events so you can be sure that with footprints no one is forgotten!

We would love to welcome you into our community.

If you are up for a new challenge fostering could be your next step, but remember it does not always go swimmingly, but it promises rewards! That is why Footprints are the best choice for anyone that would feel content in a small supportive environment.

In the next article from the series, we will be exploring what inspires our wonderful foster carers!

If you would like some more information, please do not hesitate to get in touch with one of the team.

Appeal for caring event volunteers

Lewis-Manning Hospice Care is making an appeal for ad hoc fundraising event volunteers to support the hospice in its busy schedule of events planned throughout 2023. Volunteers manager Nicola Garsden said: “Following the Coronation and The Big Help Out volunteer initiative which is encouraging businesses, organisations, and individuals across the country to help out and volunteer in their local communities, we are looking to reach out to anyone who is considering volunteering to come and join our enthusiastic team of fundraisers. “We’d love to encourage volunteers to get involved in their local community hospice.

“We have a diverse calendar of community events and campaigns taking place over the coming year and are really keen to grow our team of volunteer helpers for different events.

“Events include our Nightingale Ball, Sand Polo, the Wimborne Folk Festival, Swanage Classic Car Show, Fire Walk, Community Candles Remembrance Events, Christmas Tree Recycling Service, Wreath Making Workshops and the return of the Muddy Dog Dash in 2024.

“It’s brilliant how the hospice is being embraced with so many community events choosing to support us and allowing us to

have a presence. Having event volunteers onboard will certainly allow us to ensure that the Lewis-Manning name is getting out there and will make a real difference to us and increase awareness of the services that we offer to patients and their families with life limiting illnesses.

“On Thursday, May 11, Lewis-Manning will be hosting a Kings Coronation Tea Party &

Open Day. It’s open to all but would be a great opportunity for potential volunteers to come along, meet the team and learn more about what we’re all about. It takes place from 2-4pm.”

Anyone interested in learning more about volunteering opportunities with LewisManning Hospice Care is urged to email Nicola.garsden@lewis-manning.org.uk.

Disability charity looking for ambassadors

Dorset’s disability charity, Diverse Abilities, is looking for volunteers to help with ongoing projects and community events throughout the year. The charity is looking for volunteers to help promote at community events including Harry Paye Day on Poole Quay, Poole Harbour Festival at Baiter Park and Grooves on the Green at Ashley Cross. As well as needing help at local events, Diverse Abilities are also recruiting Volunteer Community Ambassadors to represent the charity in their local area. The role is a flexible one, and allows the individual to volunteer their time whenever is convenient for them.

They can also use their own creativity and ideas to liaise with local businesses to encourage fundraising events or displaying charity pots, leaflets or posters.

Whether that is arranging a collection at a local garden centre or holding a pub quiz. The charity is also on the lookout for people who can volunteer from home and help engage with the local community on social media.

Becky Edwards, marketing executive, said: “We need a bit of extra help engaging with the local community, whether that is at events throughout the summer, out in your

local area or online via social media.

Our new ambassador role is really flexible and allows the volunteer to give their time whenever they want.

“They can use their own initiative to approach local business, schools or organisations to spread the word and encourage fundraising ideas.

“You’ll have a great time, as well as helping to raise money to support children and adults with disabilities in the local area”

Volunteers are crucial to the work charities

like Diverse Abilities carry out, and donating free time is just as valuable as giving money.

The opportunities give volunteers a chance to learn new skills, meet new people, enhance CVs, gain experience, discover new interests and improve mental wellbeing. Visit diverseabilities.org.uk/volunteer for more information about the roles available. Contact Becky on volunteer@ diverseabilities.org.uk if you would like to get involved.

Health & Wellbeing Foundation fighting for cancer patients

Since it was formed by three local women in 2012, the Dorset Cancer Care Foundation (DCCF) has made grants totalling more than £646,000 to pay for patients’ costs including transport, parking, childcare, food bills and accommodation.

But the charity’s volunteer trustees say the number of people approaching the charity for help has doubled since before Covid and more support is desperately needed to meet the growing need. “Rapidly rising bills and fuel costs are affecting everyone.

““But for families already struggling because of a cancer diagnosis, this pressure can be almost unbearable,” explained DCCF co-founder Eve Went.

“The Pandemic has sadly also led to some people being diagnosed with cancer at a later stage – and these people need our help even more urgently.

“We have many fundraising events planned for 2023 and some fantastic people coming forward to support us with their friends, workmates and families.

“But we simply need to raise more money to cope with the rising tide of people

needing our help, so even more support is needed.

“We would love to hear from companies interested in sponsoring our events and we have many different ways in which they can do this and receive publicity and coverage for doing so.

“People can also volunteer a little time to help out at one of our events, or organise their own garden party, quiz, barn dance, or take part in a sponsored event, anything! “Or they can attend one of our great events or even donate through a small, regular direct debit. There is a way for everyone to show their support.”

Trustees Julie Hinks, Di Bird, Meryl

Ponsford and treasurer, Vic Szewczyk are helping to govern the charity and attract new supporters in 2023.

Julie works for the NHS Blood & Transplant service and was herself helped by DCCF.

She explained: “I had breast cancer 19 years ago and I lost my mum to stomach cancer five years ago. The shock of my daughter Sophie being diagnosed with post-liver transplant lymphoma (PTLD) five years ago, was immense. Thankfully she is now in remission.

“But whilst she was undergoing many months of treatment in London this put our family through extremely difficult times, both emotionally and financially.

“Thankfully, a friend put me in touch with the DCCF and the Foundation helped meet some of my costs.”

“After Sophie came home, I wanted to give back to the charity and am now a trustee. ” To find out more about DCCF, for information on how to apply for financial help and to get involved with its events and fundraising visit: dccf.co.uk.

Let the bells ring out for health and wellbeing!

How many times have you walked past a church on a sunny Saturday and enjoyed the beautiful sound of the bells pealing in celebration of a wedding, writes Jennie Pease of Dorset County Association of Church Bell Ringers

Perhaps you have heard the bells calling the faithful to church, whether you attend or not.

Care home residents 72 years wed

A Poole care home staged a magical anniversary party for two of its residents who were celebrating 72 years of marriage.

Colten Care dedicated dementia home the Aldbury is home to Valerie and Bill Sharp, who married in 1951 after first meeting at a dance in Hull. The Aldbury’s Café had been specially decorated for the party with hearts, flowers and photographs taken at the couple’s wedding and during their many happy years together.

The festivities started with the reading of a congratulatory telegram from King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla and was followed by a special lunch, presents, music and laughter. Bill and Val met when he asked her to dance. He later walked her home and revealed he had just joined the Royal Navy, before asking if she would write to him.

Val thought Bill must be older than her, as he was in the Navy, so she lied to him about her age and agreed to write. Bill had several long postings, up to two and a half years each, but they continued to write and still have their letters.

During one shore leave they

decided to get married and tied the knot on March 31, 1951, at Saint Saviours Church in Hull.

They moved about the country during Bill’s time in the Navy, living in Portsmouth and then Dartmouth.

Their first son Steve was born in Hull and their second son David was born in Devon. And when Bill left the Navy they settled in Poole where their daughter Sarah was born.

They had many happy holidays in Malta, France, Spain and the Greek Islands, always wishing to be close to the sea.

They also had a little sailing boat at Poole Harbour.

Over the years they have shared many interests including music and have supported Poole & Parkstone Singers, where they have many friends.

Bill was also a keen sportsman, playing squash well into his eighties, and being the oldest squash champion in Poole.

Bill, now 94 and Val, 92, have lived at the Aldbury since December 2022.

They have six grandchildren: Becky, Neil, Claire, Charlotte, Hannah and Joe, and nine greatgrandchildren: Connor, Dylan, Fin, Tom, Jack, Millie, Tarna and Xander.

The youngest addition Ralphie-

George was just 14 weeks old at the time of their anniversary. The couple’s daughter Sarah Gilling said: “Mum and dad came to the Aldbury together as always and we are all so grateful to the fantastic Aldbury family who have continued to provide care and support to them and have enabled them to stay together.

“The party, the lunch, everything was amazing and we all had a lovely time celebrating their anniversary.”

Lunch was prepared by the home’s chef Izabela TurczynKuzma who also baked a pink anniversary cake.

In the afternoon the Viva Voce choir visited.

Colten companion Cara Duroe said: “The choir performed a lovely singalong for all residents and left us one of their CDs to play in the future. It was a romantic and joyous celebration of a very special couple.”

Val said: “I couldn’t believe how wonderful the day was. I thought it was all a dream.”

Bill agreed: “We cherish every day we spend together and we are very thankful to all the staff who made our 72nd wedding anniversary so special. We couldn’t have asked for more.”

Church bell ringing is an ancient and fascinating art that has been practiced and developed for more than 300 years.

It is, in fact, an art that is easy enough to pick up, but sufficiently challenging and stimulating to provide a lifetime of learning and enjoyment. Learning to ring is both a mental and physical challenge. It is also a great social activity - a group of ringers is called a band - who all work together to produce beautiful sounds in changing patterns. A basic ability to handle a bell will give anyone a warm welcome to ring at towers from Abbotsbury to Wool, Aberdeen to Penzance. Going abroad? You will find ringing towers in several old British Colonies too. There are 6,000 towers in the UK. Hannah’s horticulture

May sees the end of cherry blossom, the wonder of apple blossom to start the month, and some of the first fruits of the year at the end of the month.

It truly is a fine month in the garden.

The fresh spring greens of trees as they finally spring to life and provide food for insects and baby birds in return is pretty heart-warming, and the sun has strength and promise.

Weed!

Those weeds keep coming in earnest in the warm weather, so pull out or hoe off any weeds whilst young to prevent seed heads from forming.

Check Lilies for lily Beetle and Box for box moth

caterpillar

Both of these pests are difficult to control, and can cause quite serious damage to your plants if ignored.

Box moth has been an

increasing emerging pest in the UK over the recent years, and it was definitely in Ferndown last year as I

noticed many lost their plants. Many owners of substantial box hedging and those planning to plant have chosen

to replace with a similar looking plant due to both the devastating impacts of box moth and box blight on the plants.

There is some hope however, as blue tits are now starting to try them out as a food source (though not sufficiently to protect bushes from significant attack), as well as parasitic wasps.

Hand picking is the least harmful method of control, but generic biological control ‘Fruit & Veg Protection’ and generic systemic insecticides

will have some effect. Good plant alternatives include Euonymus, Yew, Pittosporum and Berberis. Lily beetle damage is caused both by adults and larvae, but the larvae do the most damage. The adults are bright red on top, but have a tendency to fall off the plant upside down when they sense vibration as a defence mechanism, rendering them invisible!

Their larvae generally hide under the leaves and disguise themselves with a layer of their own dung!!

Keep watch, and pick off and kill any larvae and adults seen. Prune spring flowering shrubs once they have finished flowering.

This is essential to do now, so that the plant can grow and produce the stems for flowers next spring.

In general, spring flowering plants produce flowers on old wood, so foliage needs at least nine months to mature and develop buds.

Forsythia, Rhododendron, and Camellia are all examples. My rule of thumb for the majority of plants is to prune 1 month after flowering.

Support growing herbaceous plants

You can buy special hoops and rings to help prop up taller herbaceous plants, these look great, but can be pricey if you’ve got lots or are on a tight budget!

Other homemade alternatives are small sections of bean canes and string or wire. Propping up really helps to make the most of the display, and stops the wind from snapping taller plants. Plant hanging baskets, and start putting out any bedding plants and pots now that the days and nights are a bit warmer and there is less chance of frost.

Revise outdoors, or go for a walk/run in nature before or after your exams

The dreaded school and university exams begin this month.

Try to get some fresh air by revising outdoors if you can, and take a walk/run before or

after an exam to help clear the mind and de-stress the body. Exams produce lots of adrenaline, and as a result lots of glucose, and walking in nature helps your body to rid itself of that excess so that it causes less unwanted anxiety and physical symptoms. Wish you the very best of luck, you’re a star no matter what as you’ve done your best - that’s all anyone can ask for, and all you can ask of yourself.

Daff display despite the weather!

The West Moors Horticultural Show held its Spring Show in March. It was well supported although, despite the daffodils being late this year there was a superb selection and the show bench looked amazing.

The daffodil championship was won by Bill Howarth together with many cups. The small growers Daffodil championship sponsored

by Brewer and Brewer was won by Tim Hamlet. Floral art best exhibit was Catherine Jenkins. Best exhibit for home craft went to Jean Richardson for her bread pudding. Best exhibit was a framed watercolour by Ray Cook. On May 13 they have a plant sale at the Memorial Hall, West Moors, at 10am.

Contribute to county heritage weeks

Do you live in an architectural gem, ancient or modern? Or is there an interesting building in your garden or on your land. If so, Dorset Architectural Heritage Weeks would love you to get in touch.

The annual event is more than 30 years old and the organisers are always looking for new properties and buildings that they can share, says East Dorset Heritage Trust’s manager, Sarah Evans.

“We had a gap in 2020 and 2021 and came back last year and were able to inject new life into it, but we’d just like to have new people on board.” she said.

“We’d love to have some new places and a wider range of buildings. Currently we have about 60, but would like to get that to 80.”

On her wish-list is Grand Designs style properties, innovative new-builds, theatres and quirky places.

“The building could be 500 years old or five months, it doesn’t matter,” she said. She is also looking for more councils to open up their buildings. “People love ‘behind the scenes’ situations; going into parts of public buildings that they may have visited but not been allowed to see all of it,” she said.

“We know councils and other bodies keep people out of some areas of their property for very good reasons but they may

be able to open them over the Dorset Architectural Heritage Weeks, from September 8 to 17, so that people can get a glimpse of these unseen places.” Good examples of spaces which have been very popular include the Talbot Heath School Air Raid Bunker, which was actually refurbished in 2011 and shows how girls from the school would have sheltered from Second World War bombing raids. Other examples are Manor

House Ruins (pictured) at Witchampton and the Trust’s very own Allendale House in Wimborne. Church towers or crypts are also popular, said Sarah.

“Entry must be free but many buildings ask for donations which people sometimes like to leave.”

Prospective venues are visited by the Trust’s team, to check on accessibility and safety and, if accepted, are insured under the Heritage Open Days public liability insurance.

“Owners aren’t expected to know all the history of their property and we don’t expect everything to be a big building or space.

“Even if you think your structure or property is too small, please get in touch because it might just be perfect,” she said.

Transform your outdoor space with a garden pergola

When it comes to creating a stunning outdoor living space, few things match the beauty and practicality of a pergola. Poole-based shading specialists Broadview run through the various factors to consider when choosing a pergola for your garden: Before you start looking at models and designs, it’s a good idea to think about what you’ll use your pergola for.

If you plan to use your pergola for entertaining, you’ll need to make sure it’s large enough to accommodate you, your guests, and any necessary furniture. Or, if you’re creating a small, intimate seating area, a smaller pergola will work perfectly. They can be freestanding or attached to your home.

Your pergola will be a major focal point in your garden, so it’s important to nail down its design.

Our aluminium pergolas are manufactured in Belgium by market leader Brustor and there are plenty of models to choose with differing features such as optional LED lighting, rain sensors and integrated heaters. You’ll likely be spending a lot of time in your pergola, so make it as comfortable as possible by choosing the right furniture.

If you’d like to use your pergola for outdoor cooking and entertaining, consider adding an outdoor kitchen, barbecue or drinks fridge.

With expert installation and design included in our service, you can be confident that your pergola will be built to the highest standard of quality and craftsmanship.

We’ve installed pergolas in gardens of all shapes and sizes, and we’re happy to recommend one that will suit your outdoor space perfectly.

Getting creative at Cranborne

The Creatives are a group of highly-skilled local artists and makers who have been working and exhibiting together in the area since 2018. This spring they will be returning to one of their favourite venues, the Garden Room at Cranborne Garden Centre, with collections of their latest work.

As well as contemporary paintings by Virginia Whiting, Sue Sutherland, Teresa Rogers and Wendy Jump, we will be showing high-quality woodturned items by Viv Broughton, jewellery by Sue created from semi-precious stones, fibre work by Elizabeth Tanner, stained glassware by Jan Hawker and a range of gifts, cards and prints. The exhibition will run from Wednesday, May 24, until Monday, May 29, from 10.00am to 5.00pm daily.

Entry to the exhibition is free, there is ample parking on site, disabled access and a delightful café and seating area. The garden centre has a wide selection of plants and garden items, together with a vintage barn.

In addition, on Wednesday 24th, Cranborne Manor Gardens will be open to the public. For more details and examples of the group’s work, visit: thecreativesgallery.wordpress. com.

Here’s a shedload of trouble!

Holy cow! Farm life, with all its joys, woes and foibles, is turned into a chucklesome tale of angst and agriculture set to music, as Living Spit return to Dorset with their show, One Man & His Cow. The Man - Farmer Trevor - played by Ian Harris, has a big problem. Given just months to live, he’s faced with the dilemma of to which one of his three children he should bequeath his beloved farmstead.

They all have their own beguiling qualities and Trevor is finding it impossible to choose between them, until one fateful night in the cowshed where help arrives from the unlikeliest of sources. Scattered with agricultural antics and farmyard frolics - told entirely in rhyme and song - it’s definitely a field worth ploughing.

For two nights only at 7.30pm. Friday, May 12, Cecil Memorial Hall, Cranborne, and Saturday, May 27, Studland Village Hall, Swanage. artsreach.co.uk/event/one-man-and-cow.

Mapping out the stories from our streets

People living in the BCP Council area who have a story to tell are being asked to join a new community storytelling project which aims to create a local story-map. A spokesman for the project said Stories From Our Streets wants to capture tales from ordinary people.

“We’re looking for groups and individuals who’d like to take part and play an important role by contributing stories as a way of connecting us with each other and helping to establish an identity for BCP, based on tales from the people who live and work in the area,” they said.

No writing experience is necessary because the Artful Scribe organisation, which is funded by Arts Council England and is running the project, will help with story-telling craft, and offer skills to shape people’s writing in a professional way. The project is kicking off with a free-toenter competition to get creative juices flowing.

“We are looking for short pieces of nonfiction writing that celebrate the people and places of BCP, past and present; stories that tell us about everyday life in the area, maybe capturing a recent moment or a memory from the past,” said the spokesman.

“We want to know who are the treasured characters of your neighbourhood? What tales do the streets, parks, beaches and buildings want to tell?

The organisation is hoping to receive a story from each of the BCP postcode areas, to include in its story map. Submitted stories will be considered for publication on the Stories From Our Streets Story Map, and the winning entry will be awarded £50 of book vouchers. Entrants must be 16 years and over and submit their story by July 21 2023. More details from: artfulscribe.co.uk/ blogs/753/writing-competition-storiesfrom-our-streets.

The Pub Landlord, Al Murray’s belligerent comedy creation, has deigned to prop up the stage in Wimborne to pontificate mightily on all the pressing issues that we didn’t really know were issues anyway!

Using the famously particular Tivoli audience as a litmus test ahead of his big show at the Royal Albert Hall a couple of nights later, the tickets, in typical pub trading tradtion, are at a knock-down pricefrom 20 quid, as opposed to almost 40. Called the Gig For Victory Tour Warm Up, the tickets for Tivoli’s two shows on the same day have been in such great demand that an extra performance date has now been added.

The great man himself sums up what the show is all about: ‘As the dust settles and we emerge blinking into the dawn of a new year, the men and women of this great country will need answers. Answers that they know they need, answers to questions they never knew existed.’

And who better to show the way, to provide those answers than the people’s man of the people, the Pub Landlord?

Soaked in the deep and ancient bar-room wisdom of countless lock-ins, he will be

there to show the way. Wherever you are, he will - within sensible travel limits and fee-to-booking policy, obviously - be offering those thirsty for commonsense a brimming pint of the good stuff.

Murray has created one of comedy’s most memorable characters in the Pub Landlord.

Al has the answers you didn’t know you needed!

We’ve all met one, we’ve all tried to stay awake while listening to one, and we all know they talk absolute !!x@@x!!

Tuesday, May, 9, 7.30pm; Wednesday, May 10, 6pm and 9pm.

All tickets must be collected from the box office on the day of the performance you’ve selected.

A heartwarming, exciting adventure

Review and pictures by Tom Scrase

Alice’s Adventures in Easterland featuring Britain’s Got Talent star Pete Lambert, at the Barrington Theatre in Ferndown, was a heartwarming, fun and exciting Easter adventure. There were amazing circus and magic acts making it a thrilling family show for all ages. When the Knave of Hearts wrongly accuses her of stealing the Jam Tarts, Alice goes on an Easterland journey, meeting some fun characters along the way, before discovering who really took the tarts and how to take them back safely to the Queen of Hearts. This was indeed a very impressive show.

Question: Which band’s single was the first ever video played on the MTV music channel? Of course, all Dire Straits fans would have answered that straight away.

They’ll also want do the walk of life to the Tivoli theatre and catch Money For Nothing, a highly-rated tribute to the band that gave the world instant rock classics like Brothers in Arms and Sultans Of Swing. Formed in 2000, Money For Nothing’s energy and quality of musicianship makes them a must-see for rock enthusiasts as well as die-hard Dire Straits fans.

The line-up features experienced and accomplished musicians who have forensically studied their heroes in order to make their sound as close as possible to the real thing.

Featuring all the hits from their first-ever single Sultans Of Swing to their last single of 1992 The Bug, plus versions from On the Night and Live @ The BBC, the show has been performed all over the world.

Cast feel the Pressure

Some of the cast of an upcoming Second World War play paid an emotional visit to the D-Day map room at Southwick House near Portsmouth.

The actors, along with their director and the creative team from Wimborne Drama Productions, are currently in rehearsals for Pressure, an intense real-life thriller written by David Haig. The play is an extraordinary and little-known true story about the meteorologists, led by Scot Dr James Stagg, who had to advise General Eisenhower and the other Allied commanders about the weather conditions for the D-Day landings on the beaches of Normandy in June 1944. Stagg, Eisenhower and the commanders were based at Southwick House for the final weeks before D-Day and that is where the play is set.

Director Richard Neal said: “It was very moving and

rewarding to visit the place where such a pivotal moment in history was planned and executed.

“We stood in the room where Eisenhower received the forecasts from Stagg and where he had to make the decision whether to launch the invasion or not.

“The weather was unusually bad in June 1944 and at stake were the lives of hundreds of thousands of men and the outcome of the war.

“So they had to get the forecasts right.

“Pressure is a brilliantly written drama by David Haig. It is tense and deeply affecting, but also funny.

“I encourage everyone to come and see it.”

Pressure will be performed at the Tivoli Theatre from May 18 to 20.

New quartet shines at show

Spring chamber music concert Review by Rex Bale

The Asaka quartet entertained an appreciative audience at the Methodist Church in Broadstone.

The quartet, formed in 2021 at the Royal Academy of Music, showed a maturity beyond their years, and presented an innovative programme of music. Beethoven’s string quartet Opus 18 No 1 was the centre piece, and there were three pieces by women composers.

Before the concert the quartet kindly gave a masterclass, sponsored by the Albert Eugenie Frost Trust, to Young Musicians’ Camerata, a group of 11 youngsters who presented a piece by Percy Fletcher, ‘Folk Song And Refrain’ to open the afternoon.

The quartet started with Florence Price’s ‘Five Folk Songs in Counterpoint’ which included the familiar melodies of Clementine and Swing Low

Sweet Chariot. They also let their hair down with the short but energetic ‘Shortnin’ Bread’, a western hoe-down tune. Fanny Mendelssohn, Felix’s sister, was a prolific composer and a fine pianist.

When Queen Victoria asked Mendelsson to play ‘Italienne’he had to come clean and admit that it was his sister Fanny’s. After the interval, the Beethoven string quartet opened with a dance-like movement with pauses to draw breath, and the final piece, by the only living composer Caroline Shaw, ‘Entre’Acte’ is based very loosely on a Haydn trio and minuet.

This piece will stay in the memory of the audience I am sure.

Unusually it ends with a long cello solo.

We are extremely grateful for the support of the Society of Poole Musicians, a charity which champions voluntary music.

A day at the farm with Tiffany Fleming

Tiffany Fleming is a volunteer at High Mead Farm in Longham, Ferndown. High Mead Farm is a working farm run to promote the benefits of engaging with animals, soil, and nature. They ‘create purposeful roles for our co-farmers, young people and adults alike, to help bring about a sense of well-being and self-worth that many have never experienced before’.

I penned this on a gloriously sunny day after a visit to High Mead that coincided with the lifting of the Avian Flu housing restrictions. The measures, which came into force in November last year, were put in place to reduce the risk of spread of the bird-killing virus. Essentially, it was to freerange birds what lockdown was to people; it meant that all poultry and captive birds had to be kept indoors. The lifting of the restrictions meant that eggs laid by hens with access to outside areas could return to being marketed as ‘Free-Range’ and, more importantly, our birds

are once again free to roam the Farm. They simply could not contain their excitement.

We had busy Bantams, scratching and searching the paddock for snacks, Runner Ducks, noisily making their way round High Mead, all in a line, backs straight, heads held high; a delightful sight. But none were so chuffed as the chickens, who were very vocal and looked beyond pleased with themselves as they fluffed up their feathers and crowed their freedom call chorus-line style. The rest of the Farm’s residents were noticeably less moved by the event and had all taken

to dozing in the sun, which, bearing in mind the Alpacas were also free-roaming, made it tough for Richie to mow the paddock; its first cut of the year!

Keen not to add to the congestion, I headed for the sanctuary of the veg gardens. The spring rays had gently warmed the poly-tunnel and, with the wonderful, evocative aroma of freshly-cut grass and a gorgeous earthy scent of beetroot mixed with the smell of freshly watered beds, I was instantly transported to summer.

If I closed my eyes, I could imagine myself beside a river. I grew up on the banks of the River Waveney and there is something about the smell of a river and the surrounding

foliage that delivers me an instant feeling of wellbeing. At least, it would have if it were not for the incessant noise of the chooks who were still celebrating their newfound freedom!

In search of somewhere equally warm but a little more peaceful, I headed into the glasshouse where I found a fabulous collection of seedlings, all ready to plant out, tray upon tray of tomatoes and bell-peppers, salads and leafy greens, tiny but all perfectly formed.

I only hope that whichever group of Co-Farmers in the horticultural team has the envious job of planting these little beauties, they are not too bothered by the noise of the chickens, as they don’t sound as if they are going to calm down any time soon!

Don’t forget our Spring Fayre on Saturday, May 20, 10.00am to 4.00pm (under 14s go free!).

Trees for Wimborne, a new beginning

All of us who have been watching Wild Isles cannot fail to be amazed by our wonderful wildlife but at the same time affected by the terrible losses in each, and every sort of habitat. Woodlands are no exception. The woodland edge plays a particularly important role for supporting many species.

So, when Dorset Council showed Trees for Wimborne, a subgroup of Wilding Wimborne, where we could plant, it was evident that these places would create the opportunity for a variety of different ‘edges’.

At Dogdean SANG (Suitable Alternative Natural Green Space) we were given the opportunity to plant a hedge - which creates two edges! Traditionally, hedges were planted with one species, usually hawthorn, blackthorn or hazel to provide a stock-proof barrier, then other species of tree and shrub would become established over many years. But with biodiversity in mind, we planned to skip the centuries and ensured that from the start the hedge had a lot of variety.

We wanted the hedge to develop different heights to create a variable structure, so tall

trees providing a highway for bats, whilst vigorous growth at the base becoming a highway for small mammals.

We wanted the trees to give as long a flowering season as possible to keep bees and other pollinators happy, and we wanted trees that fruit and berry in autumn so there would be a much-needed food source to help wildlife survive the winters.

We were also given the opportunity to plant two corner areas, a woodland fringe behind the Brook Road Industrial Estate and enclosures on the Stourview SANG.

All these sites will provide those much-

needed wildlife edges. At the same time these plantings were needed to screen against intrusions to the green spaces from the urban environment.

We planned all of these areas to be rich in variety, but individual to suit the ground conditions. Each one will attract its own population of insects and other wildlife. As with the hedges they will mark the seasons with a variety of catkins, blossom and bear a harvest bounty, this in addition to the different hues of green from a variety of leaf shape and colour which will help to create a feeling of peace and tranquillity.

After a year’s planning, resourcing, and implementation there are now 700 new trees planted by Trees for Wimborne and the wider public. There is little yet to see; just a proliferation of tree guards surrounded by mounds of protective bark chippings. Most of the trees have been provided by the Woodland Trust with some by the council, Upton Tree Specialists, and some by Trees for Wimborne members.

PENTRIDGE

Pentridge is a small village on the edge of the Cranborne Chase on the boundary of Dorset and Hampshire.

Lots of the houses are thatched and built of brick and flint. There are also cob walls to be seen. Start by visiting the Church, which is mainly built of flint.

Then walk past the village green and follow a bridleway northwards along a hedge to meet the Dorset Cursus. This must cause lots of curses as it’s practically invisible there! When you reach the road turn right, east south east, then, at the next junction right again, south west back towards the Church.

At Manor Farm, take a footpath leading south east up a hill across a field, along a

narrow way between hedges and across fields to woodland at the top of the hill, Penbury Knoll.

The map indicates that you will pass a trig. point but I was unable to see it, probably because it’s covered with brambles. The views from the top of the hill, east and west are fantastic!

Join a bridleway heading north east along the boundary with Cranborne, part of the Jubilee Trail, crossing wild flowered downland, then across arable as far as a wood where you turn left, downhill.

Then you turn right, north east, crossing the county boundary at Bokerley Dyke which you follow north west for half a mile, then turn left, west, along a bridleway to join a track that takes you south south west for a mile back to your starting place.

You’ll have walked about three miles.

Motoring Street parties: All you need to know

Street parties are happening across the UK to celebrate the King’s coronation over the May 6 bank holiday.

This means road closures which could disrupt traffic. Here’s how you find out about road closures near you.

Which roads are closed near me for the coronation?

You can usually find out which roads are closed near you on your local council’s website.

If there’s a road closure happening on your street, you should have been notified in advance. The street party organisers should have sent you and other residents a letter telling you about the road closures around 2-3 months before. The organisers should follow up with more correspondence around 2-3 more times before the event.

Most councils advise holding street parties in cul-de-sacs or quiet residential streets. They shouldn’t be on bus routes or major roads. Larger public events are allowed to take place on bus routes or major roads. According to the GOV coronation events page, there are over 65 large public events happening in the UK. Usually these have more publicity, so you should have had information on road closures and diversions around 8 months before the event, usually by post. You can find out where large public events and street parties are near you with the government coronation events map.

Can I drive through a closed road that’s having a street party?

You should be able to drive through a closed road If there’s no alternative route or you need to access a house on the closed road. If you have to use your car for work, for example, the organisers should also let you in and out. This applies if you’re expecting a delivery too.

If you’re driving around and you find a road is closed because of a street party there should be diversion signs. There should also be clear road closure and road ahead closed signs.

If it’s a larger public event on a major road, there should be road closure signs and diversions to get you back on your route.

How long will the roads be closed for?

If the roads are closed for a street party it should only be for 1 day on the weekend or on a bank holiday. Sundays are usually the preferred day for a street party as fewer people are at work.

The King’s coronation is on May 6, with a national bank holiday on May 8. So it’s likely most of the street parties will be held over this weekend.

Will I be asked to move my car?

If you park on the street, you might be asked to move your car a week before the party. But if you park your car on your premises then the road closure only affects you when you need to get in and out. But the organisers should let you do this. If you park on the road, you might have been asked to move your car to make space for the party before 11am. But it’s up to you whether you decide to move your car or not.

You should have had notice of the street party in advance.

This should have details of who you need to contact if you don’t want to move your car. It might also contain details of parking alternatives.

Street parties should finish at a reasonable time so you should only have to park somewhere else for a few hours. But you should always make sure you’re parked legally.

The Street Party site suggests this as a timing for street parties:

• Remove cars by 11am

• Lunch at 2pm

• Tea party at 5pm

• Finish by a time when you would not keep other neighbours awake

I have a resident permit. Can I still park my car on my road during the street party?

If your permit applies on the weekend or on bank holidays you can park on your road during the street party. You might still be

asked to move your car during the party, though.

Sometimes resident permits don’t apply on the weekend or bank holidays, but that doesn’t mean you can’t park on your street. It might just mean you get non-residents parking on your street too. Check the signage on your road to see if your permit applies on bank holidays.

If I have to move my car for a street party, will my car insurance still cover me?

If you’re parked legally, your car insurance should cover you. When you park, make sure you’re:

• Following the parking restrictions in the area - these should be clearly stated on signs around the street

• Not parking on yellow lines

• Not blocking anyone’s driveway

• Parking safely, so you don’t cause an accident because of the position of your car You don’t need to let your insurer know if you’re parking elsewhere for a few hours.

What else should I be aware of when I’m driving on the King’s coronation weekend?

Sometimes if organisers haven’t applied for a street party in time, they might hold informal ‘street meets’. These don’t require a road closure, but they could spill into the road if they get busy.

Road closures could impact traffic too, so it’s worth checking journey times before you travel.

(And you may well get beheaded!... ed).

Why is fuel so expensive?

The price of petrol in the UK is among the most expensive in the world.

Crude oil is bought by retailers on the global market, where prices might fluctuate with supply and demand. Exchange rates are likely to have an effect on prices too. So what makes up the rest? The answer (mostly) is tax. UK fuel duty, at 53p per litre, is one of the highest in the world. According to the BBC, this accounts for 35% of the total cost of fuel. On top of this is VAT, which currently sits at 17% - but it’s charged at 20%.

What makes up the cost of fuel?

Fuel duty 35%

Cost of petrol to the supplier 33% VAT 17% (VAT is charged at 20% but makes up 17% of the cost of fuel)

Retailer’s profit 8%

Cost of biofuel content (for example E10) 7%

Supply and delivery 1%

Source: BBC

When is fuel consumption at its highest?

When you’re accelerating your fuel consumption is at its highest. It’s likely you’ll have to accelerate on multiple parts of your journey, but opting for gentle acceleration is usually the best option.

When you’re travelling faster your vehicle uses more fuel. This is because your engine is working harder and needs more fuel to do this.

On some motorways in England and Wales, the Government cut the speed limit to reduce emissions. Usually, the less emissions you’re creating the less fuel you’re using. So travelling at 50 mph instead of 70 mph could improve your fuel consumption.

Also if you’re travelling at 80 mph you’re breaking the law and could end up with a speeding fine. You’re also using 25% more fuel than you would by staying within the speed limit.

What will reduce my fuel consumption?

With the government unlikely to reduce fuel duty any time soon, it’s worth thinking about how you can use less fuel.

One thing to do is look into fuel efficient cars, as those with the highest MPG rating should be the most fuel efficient.

Or think about switching to an

electric car. In the meantime, there are lots of other easier ways to reduce your fuel costs. Not only could these tips save you money, but making the most of your fuel reduces your car’s carbon emissions.

How can you avoid wasting fuel?

Here we look at some of the best ways to increase your fuel efficiency and to save on petrol.

1. Maintain your vehicle

Well-maintained vehicles generally use fuel more efficiently, so it’s worth keeping your vehicle in good condition.

Maintenance includes booking it for regular services and getting issues fixed quickly.

2. Remove excess weight

Your car uses more fuel if it’s heavy. One way to reduce its weight is to take anything out of the car that you’re not using. Removing your roof rack when you’re not using it and getting rid of any rubbish in the car could reduce some weight. Footballs, deckchairs, toys and so on might be handy from time to time, but the weight could increase your fuel consumption. Give your car boot a clear out of items you don’t need.

3. Inflate tyres correctly

If you don’t know whether you have the correct tyre pressure your fuel consumption should tip you off.

The surface area that’s in contact with the road increases when a tyre is under-inflated. The more surface area in contact with the road, the more drag on the wheel.

4. Only top up your tank with as much fuel as you need Only topping up with what you need and avoiding having a full tank means the fuel you do have goes slightly further.

To make it easier to judge the correct amount of fuel, keep a notebook in the glove box, or keep a record on your phone. When you fill up, write down how much fuel you put in to get from A to B. Note this in litres, not in pounds, as fuel prices are always changing.

Some fuel tanks can take up to 109 litres, so that’s a significant amount of extra weight to carry around. You wouldn’t leave 109 litres worth of bottled water in your boot, would you?

5. Drive smoothly

Your driving style might have a big impact on how much petrol or diesel you use. Try to keep your driving smooth. Gentle acceleration and using the highest safe gear should use less fuel. What’s more, when you approach traffic lights, ease off the accelerator early if the lights are red. Why hurry just to wait? This is sometimes called ‘defensive driving’. Not only should it help you use less fuel, but it tends to be safer too. And, if you’re driving with a black box device in the car, defensive driving could also help insurance.

6. Avoid idling

Keeping the engine running while you’re stopped - otherwise known as idling - consumes

roughly half a gallon to about a gallon of fuel every hour. You’ll also be pumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This means you’re burning about 1.067 to 2.13 ounces of fuel every minute you’re idle. Modern cars should be more fuel efficient. It’s likely you’re burning less fuel by turning off your engine, then restarting it when you have to move again. Plus, leaving your engine idle for too long is illegal.

7. If you have it, use stop-start

Keeping your foot on the clutch when you stop at traffic lights could waste fuel. But if you take your foot off while the car is in neutral, the car’s stop-start system should kick in, saving you fuel.

8. Don’t coast - it’s a bad driving technique

Coasting - which is driving out of gear - isn’t a safe driving technique. You have less control of your car and you’re likely to

travel faster as you go downhill. Some people coast to try to reduce their fuel consumption. But coasting doesn’t save fuel. While it probably won’t cost you extra in fuel, nowadays it won’t save you fuel either. Modern cars have electronic control units (ECUs) so your car uses less fuel downhill.

9. Reduce your air con use

Every time you go to cool down your car with the air conditioning, you’re reducing your fuel. It’s the same for your heating. So, only use these if you really need to. Both use engine power to work properly and therefore increase your fuel consumption.

10. Use cruise control

One way to save fuel is to drive at a constant speed. Cruise control can help with this.

If you’re on the motorway or on a long constant flat surface, try activating cruise control. You might find that using it reduces your fuel consumption

Don’t use cruise control on roads with a gradient though. As the system is designed to be used on flat roads at a constant speed, it requires more power to get up a hill.

This could increase your fuel consumption, rather than save it.

11. Combine journeys into one round trip

Instead of making several one-off trips, try to combine them into a single round trip for better fuel efficiency.

When your engine has been on and is warmed up, it should be most fuel efficient. But starting when it’s been off for a while might use up more energy and fuel.

12. Keep your windows closed When it’s warm in the car, do you roll the windows down or switch the air conditioning on? Either way could cost you, depending on your speed. Air conditioning uses fuel. But having the windows down causes drag, which uses up fuel too.

VIEWINGS BY APPOINTMENT

At low speeds, open the window - the fuel used to compensate for drag is less than the fuel used to power your air con. But when driving on the motorway, it’s the other way around. So, turn on the climate control and roll the windows up. The tipping point for this is around 30 mph.

13. Know how much you really spend on fuel

Knowing how much your car is costing you to run is the first step to shaving a few pounds off your bill.

Check out our fuel cost calculator to see just how much you’re spending on petrol or diesel each week, month and year.

14. Find a cheaper place to get petrol

If you find your local petrol station is costing the Earth, you might find that there’s one a few miles down the road that’s a little cheaper.

Use our petrol prices tool to get up-to-date petrol prices within five, 10 or 20 miles from your location.

Chipper is frying high with award

A Blandford fish and chip shop iis celebrating after being awarded a prestigious quality mark.

The Forum Frier has gained a place among the UK’s top chippies after achieving the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) Quality Accreditation, sponsored by Sarsons Vinegar.

The NFFF, the trade body that represents the nation’s fish and chip shops, runs the scheme as a way of raising standards within and enhancing the profile of the fish and chip industry.

The scheme is a way of rewarding and promoting shops that provide good quality products and high standards of hygiene, as well as friers who show a high level of competence, the organisation says.

To qualify, each shop must go through a virtual inspection by an NFFF Approved Assessor who assesses the shop’s presentation, hygiene and cleanliness, staff training, equipment, frying and sales skills and most importantly the quality of the cooked product.

A Forum Frier spokesperson said: “We are

delighted to gain our place in the scheme.

“To be recognised as one of the top fish and chip shops by the NFFF is indeed an honour and a credit to Cookie and all our hardworking staff, who I would like to offer my sincere thanks for the continued hard work and efforts to maintain our excellent reputation.

“The accreditation process is very rigorous with every aspect of the business inspected from top to bottom with no room for error or a drop in quality throughout.

“I would personally like to thank all our customers, new and old. The support and encouragement they have offered has been great. It has motivated us to maintain our high standards which have been recognised with this accreditation.”

NFFF president Andrew Crook said the award signals to consumers they can buy with confidence.

“The NFFF Quality Accreditation scheme is extremely comprehensive,” he said.

“Food safety is a key area that we examine together with other key

aspects of the business including the preparation and cooking equipment, to the management of paperwork and the traceability of fish.

“The Forum Frier clearly takes pride in where it sources its fish and potatoes from,” Andrew added.

“Achieving the NFFF Quality Accreditation provides reassurance to customers that they are being served cooked food using high-quality ingredients.”

Bryan Carroll, Sarson’s sales and marketing director, said: “Obtaining the Quality Accreditation award is a coveted achievement.

“Congratulations to The Forum Frier for joining an elite selection of fish and chip shops who have proven their commitment to maintaining the highest levels of quality.”

Each Fish and Chip Quality Accreditation is valid for a year and retention is dependent on standards being maintained as validated by NFFF officials and appointed assessors.

What happens over divorce and matrimonial finances?

‘...down the pub last night, I opened up about my divorce. ‘Everyone seems to have an opinion or experience, all of which are horrific.

‘I don’t want to be taken to the cleaners...’

You are understandably worried about money and what’s going to happen to your life because of your divorce. The reason that you hear lots of different opinions and ‘horror stories’ is because sorting out property and money on divorce (‘matrimonial finances’) is based on the objective principle of ‘fairness’. Family lawyers (and, if really necessary, a judge in court) first look at your combined capital and pensions assets and apply the ‘yardstick of equality’ test.

Roughly translated, this means to split everything down

the middle, but there is then also the legal requirement to consider what is ‘fair in all the circumstances?’

The key legal requirements are recorded within ‘section 25 of the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973’, which contains a long list of factors which lawyers/a judge must take into account. In addition, meeting the ‘needs’ of both you and your ex (and also any children) now and into the foreseeable future will be very important, which includes housing and an ability to pay day-to-day costs of living.

Therefore, every divorce is unique, which means that what happened when some else got divorced is not helpful when working out what is best for you.

Solicitor advises on £12million deal

Ringwood law firm Ellis Jones Solicitors has advised on the £12m sale of a leading UK motorcycle clothing and accessories brand based in Hampshire. It acted for New Milton based TranAm Ltd in the deal with Finland-based Duell Corporation.

Neil Cook, partner and head of business services, led the Ellis Jones team that advised TranAm and completed the sale on its behalf.

Ellis Jones has offices in Monmouth Court in Ringwood town centre.

Neil said: “This was a significant transaction for a family firm which has grown into one of the UK’s leading distributors and wholesalers of premium clothing and accessories.

“The company entered this deal with the benefit of a strong balance sheet and high profitability which allowed it to reatlise a multi-million pound sale price.

“It was a privilege to advise a local firm and its owners in a transaction which ties the future

of the business with Duell, one of the leading European wholesalers, and paves the way for considerable growth.”

TranAm is a leading distributor and wholesaler of clothing and accessories for the motorcycling sector. It also has an offering of ski, snowboarding and pet accessories.

Founded in 1976, it employs 28 people in Gore Road, New Milton. Its managing director Peter Lloyd will continue to head operations at the firm following the deal with Duell. The company will continue to trade under the name of TranAm.

Peter said: “I am delighted to join our forces with

Duell to grow our business jointly and as part of one of Europe’s leading powersports wholesalers.

“I believe we will achieve significant sales synergies by offering a more comprehensive product portfolio to our established customer base.” Duell was established in 1983 and is based in Mustasaari, Finland. It employs more than 200 people. Duell is listed on the First North Marketplace. It acquired the entire share capital and full voting rights of TranAm for an agreed purchase price of £11.875 million.

Jarkko Ämmälä, CEO of Duell, said: “I am very pleased that we can significantly strengthen our market position in the UK.

“The acquisition of TranAm provides us with fast access to the large UK market and a strong foothold to further grow our business by also bringing our own brands to a wide range of consumers in the UK through TranAm’s existing distribution channels.”

Contracts were exchanged on February 27.
