Lions boost for Ukraine appeal

Campsite rejected

Plans for a naturist campsite in West Moors have been thrown out by Dorset Council. The 12-pitch campsite, slated for Aurelia Gardens in Newmans Lane and described as environment-friendly, was refused because planners feared the five-acre site would affect the Green Belt and a nearby protected wildlife site. There were no objections from West Moors Town Council, or the public.

Crafty fabric sale

Last month members of Ringwood & Fordingbridge

Lions Club travelled to Lymington to help New Forest For Ukraine pack much-needed supplies of donated clothing, toys, footwear, blankets, and medical supplies, into boxes destined for hospitals and aid centers located in Ukraine and Poland. New Forest For Ukraine have access to two warehouses in Lymington where, on a daily basis, they assemble huge amounts of donated items that are desperately needed by those who have lost everything because of the war in Ukraine.

John Allison who runs the enterprise explained that they have been generously gifted unwanted PPE, equipment, hospital beds and mattresses from the NHS and, together with generators, clothing, toys, food, medical supplies and much more, these leave Lymington by lorry for Poland and Ukraine

every three weeks. Lions Club president Stephen Sherring was amazed at the scale of the operation and the generosity of the public who help donate so much.

He said: “The dedication of the volunteers who work tirelessly in their Lymington Warehouse is incredibly humbling, and it is both our honour and pleasure to spend the day helping them with this amazing work”.

There are collection points assembled all over the New Forest for anyone who would like to donate items needed for aid centres and hospitals in Ukraine.

Anyone wishing to know more about either organisation or how they can help, can find out more at websites: newforestforukraine.co.uk and randflions.org.uk.

A craft and fabric sale is taking place at Sturminster Marshall Memorial Hall on Tuesday, October 17, from 2pm-4pm. More details from sturminstermarshall memorialhall.co.uk.

Beach cleans and bingo boost Scarlet’s appeal

Almost a year ago, we featured the story of Scarlet Sutcliffe who’d set herself a double challenge – to help clean Dorset’s beaches and to raise enough money for a volunteering trip to Cambodia to help with wildlife and conservation projects.

The Queen Elizabeth School pupil is still fundraising to meet the £4,580 cost of her mission but was happy to report that a recent bingo night raised more than £200 as participants competed to call ‘house!’ and win prizes donated by local businesses.

“My dad made a sterling effort of being a bingo caller for the first time in his life,” says Scarlet.

“We had so many worthy bingo winners and a thoroughly entertaining night.

“I have finally passed the halfway mark with £1,700 still to raise.

“Thanks to Ferndown Forest Golf Club, Tigerlilly Nails, Salamander Cookshop, Swaffields Barbers and Sonder Coffee for the

prizes. We really appreciate their help.”

Scarlet aims to spend four weeks in Cambodia next July, supporting Camp International in raising the educational and

Facelift for 2000-year old obelisk

Detail of taxes dating back almost 2,000 years are clear to read once again - thanks to cleaning work at a Dorset estate.

Cleaning and repointing work has been carried out on the Philae obelisk at Kingston Lacy, near Wimborne, by the National Trust. The obelisk, which has been on the estate for almost 200 years, played an important part in the deciphering of hieroglyphics. It was originally erected outside a temple on the island of Philae, in Aswan, southern Egypt, in around 150BC.

William John Bankes, whose extensive and groundbreaking work in Egypt at the beginning of the 19th century helped lay the foundations for modern archaeology, found it in 1815.

“It is effectively a documentation of taxes, with inscriptions in both Greek and hieroglyphics,” said a Kingston Lacy spokesman.

“The dual inscriptions enabled William John to identify the names of Ptolemy and Cleopatra, information that other scholars were able to use in the race to understand hieroglyphics.” But despite the historical importance of the obelisk, good old water and elbow grease were used to clean the pink granite structure, with repair work carred out using traditional materials. Kingston Lacy, cared for by the National Trust, is open daily.

Plans for new SEN school in Wimborne

Plans for a new special school in Wimborne have been unveiled.

A planning application has been submitted to Dorset Council for the school, at Farrs House, in Cowgrove Road.

The plans have been submitted by Tanner & Tilley Planning Consultants on behalf of Arc Schools Ltd, which said the facility could see around 25 staff onsite ‘on any given day’.

It said ‘most students’ at the school would ‘have a diagnosis of an Autistic Spectrum Condition’ and as such, would work to a ‘curriculum endorsed by the Mindfulness in Schools Association’.

“The school will not have big, loud break times, as most of our students are very noise sensitive,” the application said. “Some may walk the grounds with adult supervision, others will take part in mindful activities in class (colouring, listening to music, etc).”

Arc Schools currently runs a primary school and the facility at Farrs House would allow existing students ‘to graduate as age permits’, the plan said.

“The school will teach a range of subjects that you would expect to see in a mainstream school, as well as having therapeutic sessions,” the application went on.

It would admit students from the Dorset, BCP and Hampshire Council areas with education, health care plans.

“These are students who have a documented need for support that would not usually be found in a mainstream school,” the plan said.

“That means that the school will have a higher ratio of adults to children, often one adult for every four students.”

School times would be between 8.45am and 3pm, the plan outlines, with some limited

clubs running until 4pm.

The property itself would remain ‘identical to the existing arrangement’, the plan said, except for the addition of fencing and a gateway added ‘for security’.

“The school requires a specific set of premises to meet their requirements and the premises of Farrs House are ideally suited,” the application added.

Our town needs a new, alternative supermarket

Regarding the sad closure of the Nightjar in Ferndown. I truly hope we will be lucky enough for a new, badly-needed supermarket in its place. This town is crying out for an alternative to Tesco and Iceland.

They cannot be faulted - I use them all the time - but we need a change, an Aldi or small Lidl would provide homewares, which we have lost at Wilko.

We certainly do not need another cafe or large coffee chain jumping in there. How many do we need? Ferndown needs to attract more shoppers, there are cafes everywhere, and another budget supermarket would inject some life and prosperity into this town, which at the moment seems to be dying.

u3a is here to serve Wessex

Ferndown u3a has rolled out a packed programme for the autumn term.

Alongside talks and visits, we are promoting a Sponsored Walk along the entire length of the Castleman Trail on Saturday October 21.

This year we’re supporting the charity SERV Wessex - also known as ‘The Blood Runners’. Its volunteers deliver blood and other emergency medical supplies to hospitals across our region. When we last tackled the Castleman Trail, 17 of our members walked its entire length - so if you see walkers striding out in their Hi-Viz jackets on Saturday 21st, you’ll know who they are!

There are a lot of very talented members within the ranks of Fu3a, and they are busy making items for our Craft Fair, also in aid of SERV Wessex, to be held in the Barrington Theatre, Ferndown on Friday, November 10, from 10:00’.

It’s not too late to join Ferndown u3a this year. You can find details of all its Groups on its website ferndownu3a.co.uk, or by contacting our membership secretary at Fu3amemsec@gmail. com.

Visit Poppy Appeal launch

The launch of the Wimborne and District Poppy Appeal 2023 will be at 1000hrs on Saturday, October 28, in Wimborne Square. The Appeal makes a vital contribution to supporting retired and injured service personnel and their dependants and it is both heartening and humbling to see how much the people of our area support this work year after year. Poppy boxes and collecting tins will be distributed throughout the area for Remembrance fortnight. In Wimborne itself, gazebos will be located daily on the Square and at Waitrose. Each will have a variety of Poppy-related items available. This year, we are launching our plastic-free (paper)

poppy alongside traditional items. Vehicles from the Dorset Military Enthusiasts Trust will be on parade on the day, and there will be a cry from the Town Serjeant, a trumpet call, and the purchase of the first poppy by the mayor. We always need volunteers to help with stalls and collections so if you can offer an hour or so over the Remembrance fortnight, you would be most welcome. There is a sheet on the noticeboard in the RBL clubhouse on West Borough where you can register. Alternatively, contact the RBL Poppy Appeal at keigjoseph @ btinternet.com or 07799 466596.

October 21 is Apple Day in the UK, when people are encouraged to celebrate the national fruit (yes, we have a national fruit). So, to mark the occasion, here are a few facts about the humble apple.

Although we in the UK have a special affiliation with the apple, around the world it is also extremely popular. Apple trees make up half the world’s deciduous trees (plants that shed fruit or leaves when they reach maturity) used for fruit production are, yes, for apples. However, the UK does not feature among those growing the most: China, the United States, Poland, Italy, and Turkey. The age-old tradition of apple bobbing, where someone dips their face into a barrel of water containing the fruit, is made easy by the fact an apple is 25% air, making them ideal for the game. And finally, one for the UK to brag about - apple pie is not, in fact, an American invention.

It’s a myth that it was invented in the US - namely Delaware - as it was taken across the Atlantic by European settlers. It is believed to have first been invented in England around the 14th century. So, apple pie is not, in fact, as American as apple pie, if you see what I mean...

Harry’s polished homage

As autumn tiptoes in, Kingston Lacy is celebrating its Spanish Room’s magnificent doors depicting the changing seasons.

Designed in the mid-19th century by William Bankes, the set of cards explaining the story behind them sits on an unusual artist’s table with a tale of its own. It’s a copy of one of a pair of tables in the house’s library, lovingly recreated by National Trust volunteer, Harry Beaves as part of a City & Guilds Furniture Craft course at Bournemouth and Poole College in 2000.

“Living near Kingston Lacy I frequently visited and decided that I would like to copy a piece of furniture as a third-year project,” he says.

“It was neat and elegant and looked relatively straightforward, so I arranged to visit to discuss the project.”

Harry and the house manager spent a morning opening and exploring pieces of furniture which visitors rarely see inside.

“But when it came to the library table, what appeared to be a simple little item was very complex - the centre rising on two ratchet mechanisms. I was fascinated. I decided to copy it.”

After drawing and photographing it, he got to work.

“Producing a full-sized plan at college I met my first problem. I used metric measurements while the cabinet maker had used imperial.”

The original was made from mahogany, now an endangered species, so Harry used ‘sapele’ which is similar and readily available.

“The piece consists of a box on tapering legs with spade feet. It has a drawer with a sliding cover and two small leaves, supported on knuckle joints. The writing surface is raised and sloped on a double ratchet mechanism to elevate it for the user to paint or sketch. The sizes of the steps that support it increase by 64ths of an inch - an interesting problem!”

Finally finished with button polish, there was one last thing for Harry to do.

“With clenched teeth I ‘distressed’ it with an old sock containing nuts and bolts. The resulting ‘bruises’ were covered with a dark wax polish to give it an appearance of age.”

Kingston Lacy’s ledger simply referred to ‘side tables’ and with no images of similar pieces available, Harry contacted the Victoria and Albert Museum who confirmed that they were artists’ tables.

“What amazes me is the skill displayed by the 18th-century craftsman who produced such a wonderful piece without the technology that made my piece possible.

“When I retired, I became a National Trust volunteer - a small way to repay Kingston Lacy for the help that I was given. Ten years on, I’m still there!”

Protesters slate fossil fuels plan

Colourful Extinction Rebellion campaigners joined arts fans in Wimborne at the weekend - but for a different reason.

As hundreds enjoyed performances as part of the Inside Out Dorset event in the town, the XR Wimborne group staged a protest against fossil fuels.

But they got into the spirit of things, performing themselves during their demonstration, receiving a ‘warm reception’ from townsfolk.

“We sang fossil fuels-themed songs, processed and unfurled banners before the Inside Out performances started, and in parts of Wimborne where performances weren’t taking place,” a spokesman said.

“Our message was simple, there’s still time to avoid the worst of climate chaos,” added retired ship’s captain, Peter Aldous.

The campaigners were joining the Global Fight Fossil Fuels action.

Political round-up

Perhaps the Prime Minister has been listening

The raft of Prime Ministerial announcements during the Parliamentary conference recess has ignited the political agenda. The most encouraging aspect from my perspective is the evidence that, despite earlier indications to the contrary, Rishi Sunak has, indeed, been listening.

Along with many colleagues I have repeatedly been bringing to the attention of the Government my concerns and those of my constituents about HS2, ‘net zero’ and cripplingly high levels of taxation. The scene is now set for lively discussions on these and other topics where for too long a cosy consensus has been suffocating debate.

HS2 is a monumental public policy disaster, both economically and politically. The concept was inherited from Gordon Brown’s Labour government but never subjected to proper scrutiny. The Second

Reading of the legislation authorising the project was passed in 2014 by 452 votes to 41.

As one of the 41 dissenters it is of little consolation to have been proved correct. As my late colleague, Cheryl Gillan, said in that debate nearly 10 years ago, ‘We have a £50bn project not

connected to any airport or other transport system such as HS1 and divided into two phases with no guarantee that the northern route will ever be built’.

n In stark contrast to HS2, it is a pleasure to report that the new £150m Beach building at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital is on time and within budget. It was a tonic to visit the construction site and be able to meet some of those engaged in the project. The core of the building is a new state-of-the-art emergency department which extends to 4300sq metres, 2,000 more than the current provision at Poole and Bournemouth combined. It also has facilities for critical care, maternity, ante-natal and children’s health. The new building should be handed over by the contractors in October, with the opening scheduled for spring 2025. When a second modular building is commissioned later that year,

the Royal Bournemouth will be a 1,080 bed hospital for acute care while Poole will be the local centre for elective care and day surgery as well as having an urgent care unit. Meanwhile, the physiotherapy department at Christchurch Hospital, one of the best in the country, has just received, courtesy of a substantial charity donation, a new Alter-G antigravity treadmill. I was given a demonstration of how the equipment works by using air pressure to simulate a reduction in body weight. I am trying to persuade Ministers that antigravity treadmills should be a standard part of the NHS armoury for delivering postoperative rehabilitation for fractures.

They also have an important role to play in showing patients with osteoarthritis the benefits of reducing their weight.

We need housing for working-age folk

I made a mistake! Not a phrase you hear often in politics. Dorset Council have not released a housing strategy. Back in August, I used my column to urge readers to engage with the ‘Dorset Housing Consultation.’

But mistakenly referred to the consultation document as a strategy, and this led the unitary authority’s housing strategy lead to write in to the New Blackmore Vale to clarify. So, what is Dorset Council’s record on housing?

In 2020 the new unitary authority set out their plan to ‘deliver affordable, suitable and decent housing’ to make Dorset a ‘great place to live.’ The main vehicle open to councils to achieve their housing aims is the Local Plan. The new Dorset Council was tasked by the Government to bring this vital document into being by 2024.

A Local Plan focuses particularly on the

development of new housing and without this approved document being in place the council cannot deliver its strategies to meet the provision of suitable housing across the county area.

Whilst it is true that the Local Plans of the former District Councils remain in force, they were not formulated on the basis of bringing together solutions which reflect the needs of the Dorset-wide population.

The Conservative-run council published and consulted upon a draft county-wide Local Plan which was to be adopted in 2023.

To everyone’s surprise they suddenly withdrew this and decided upon a new timetable that won’t deliver the much needed county-wide plan until 2026.

In the meanwhile, the lack of a county-wide adopted plan has meant that the needs for genuinely affordable and

secure suitable housing are not being met. Developers are being allowed to build housing, but for whom?

Those seeking to moving to Dorset or those already here?

The council’s own housing needs assessment states that there is a net additional need for low non-market rented property of around 600

new homes per year.

This excellent study, undertaken jointly with BCP (Bournemouth Christchurch Poole) Council, shows that there were (in 2021) around 10,000 households living in unsuitable housing.

Of these, 45% could not afford to buy or rent in the private sector.

The Conservative-run council’s own plan shows that the working age population is declining.

Why? Because they cannot find suitable affordable housing and partially, as a result, the numbers of relatively noneconomically active 65-plus population is set to increase by 22% over the next 10 years.

We hugely need the working age people of the county to remain and thrive – but they need the necessary housing which the current Conservative council is failing to ensure is provided.

Proud to support nature restoration

It’s political conference season and I was delighted to be asked not only to open the Liberal Democrat event in Bournemouth but to welcome our leader, Ed Davey, and MPs to Dorset as part of our ‘target seat launch’. The Liberal Democrats make policies differently from other political parties. Motions are proposed by members and constituency parties, shortlisted by the federal committee (made up of local members) and then discussed and voted on by us all at conference – including those watching online.

‘One member one vote’ means that our voice carries as much weight as the Party Leader, or a member of the House of Lords and the policies passed make up the General Election Manifesto. Members made their voices clear at the conference, passing motions in support of Armed Forces families, boosting childcare funding so families can return to work and nurseries can provide decent working conditions and a career pathway

for their staff, establishing a GP guarantee and introducing a national body for Send – so children with disabilities and additional educational needs are properly funded.

I was proud to introduce part of a motion on restoring nature, just the day before the State of Nature Report was published that confirmed nearly one in six UK plant and animal species is threatened with extinction. The Liberal Democrat motion,

Platinum Award-Winning Care 2022

We have been awarded this much sought after accolade for our work with Gold Standards Framework

passed overwhelmingly at the conference would double nature, introduce a duty of care on business and a right to nature in our communities. It creates a fair deal for farmers, changes the way their funding works - ensuring a decent standard of living for them while creating climatefriendly businesses with high standards of animal welfare in the face of cheap, high-impact imports now that we are out of the EU – something else discussed at length at conference! The frustration with water companies was clear, with one member after another sharing experiences of filthy waters – including the candidate for Eastbourne appearing in his wetsuit to make a point about the right to clean rivers and seas. My motion provided for additional support for coastal councils to monitor and report water quality so that visitors and swimmers could be confident that entering the water is safe. Those who, like me, are councillors shared their

experience of developers taking down trees before a protection order is made or clearing sites in advance of a planning application to avoid the need for nature conservation.

The motion on nature established the need for ecologists and environmental planners in councils to ensure that nature and the landscape are properly considered in planning applications and local area plans. We know there will be a general election in the next year... if we want to ensure that our precious Dorset landscape remains protected, we need to use our vote wisely.

If we are going to deal with climate change and restore nature, we cannot wait until beyond 2030. Actions we take now will prevent problems down the line; climate and nature emergencies declared by councils must see real changes in decision making and Government cannot sidestep their responsibility to lead in this space.

Tremendous talent on show

Music, singing and acting took centre stage during a Dorset school’s first Talent Show. Talented students from Autism Unlimited’s Portfield School, West Parley, took to the stage at the Regent Centre in Christchurch for the event, the first to be held by the specialist autism school.

And the performers wowed a crowd made up of family, friends and staff.

Actor in residence Hane Herbert, who directed the show, said: “The students worked very hard all term on their performances.

“It was great to see their creativity and imagination unfold. The performance day was a long one for the students and they behaved so professionally, and came together to support each other.

“The highlight of the night for me was seeing students watching from the wings celebrating their classmates and clapping along to their songs.

“There was a tremendous buzz backstage at both their collective and individual achievements.”

The Parley Lane school provides a bespoke education for children aged between four and 19, with an autism diagnosis.

Sian Cranny, CEO of Autism Unlimited, said: “I don’t think there was a single person in the audience who wasn’t impressed and moved by what we experienced.

“We have immensely entertaining students at school; seeing them together on stage confirmed this.

“Fundamentally it was a great evening of entertainment, laughter and happiness. We are beyond proud of our performers.

“I know how much planning and hard work went into the show and I am hugely grateful to colleagues across the charity who worked so hard to make it happen.

“I heard from some students that they are already working on the next one.”

Superior motorcycle at auction

A 1937 Brough Superior SS80 in the Charterhouse auction of vintage and classic motorcycles to be held at the Haynes Museum on October 26 is estimated at £65,000-70,000. “Brough Superiors are held in the highest regard by all motorcycle collectors and this SS80 will look great in any collection,” said George Beale of Charterhouse. “This pre-war British bike was bought as a

box of bits in the 1990s. It then took the owner over 20 years to restore the bike.” Charterhouse are now accepting entries for their forthcoming specialist auctions with silver, jewellery & watches, textiles, Asian Art and classic motorcycles throughout October and November.

n George Beale and the Charterhouse Team can be contacted for advice and

valuations at The Long Street Salerooms, Sherborne, 01935 812277 or via info@ charterhouse-auction.com.

West Dorset find is toast of the town

Anne Oliver from Wimborne, who now lives in Cornwall is an enthusiastic fossil hunter, writes Anthony Oliver

While staying in Lyme Regis recently she was scouring the

beach in the Black Ven area when her partner Gary spied what he thought was a large fork sticking out from under a rock. After giving it a tug, out came a somewhat bent toasting fork, 18inches in length.

On further inspection Anne noticed that the wording on the top was Wimborne Minster and under an effigy of the Quarterjack was the wording ‘Quarterjack’.

The area where Anne and Gary found the fork is part of an old Victorian Tip which is constantly being eroded by the sea. This probably dates the fork as from the early 1900s but where they were sold, presumably in Wimborne, is unknown. Any suggestions would be welcomed.

The story does not end there because many years ago Anne saw exactly the same thing in a shop in Cornwall and bought it for her mother.

This identical Toasting Fork has been in our lounge for a very long time.

Food & Drink Angel hair pasta al pomodoro

After having the grandchildren for the weekend, we realised that we have become a little unfit!!

Martin decided to see what ‘slimming’ recipes he could find. By ‘slimming’ he means not stacked with potatoes and chips!! To my surprise, he came up with this vegetarian recipe. (He is strictly a meat and two veg kind of man!)

I actually like vegetarian food, and will choose that option on a menu when we go out for a meal. I suppose I am lucky because that gives me the choice of two menus!

However, I often find vegetarian food a bit bland, or the odd flavour combinations put me off. Having said that, I recently had beetroot pasta stuffed with sage and butternut squash, which, despite the colour, was very tasty.

So Martin made this pasta recipe and it was very tasty. You could cheat and add some bacon to it, but I guess that would defeat the whole idea of it being vegetarian! We did feel that there was a bit too much pasta, but that’s a matter taste. It’s certainly something that could be made the day before and left to marinate overnight in the fridge and then it’s quick to finish off when you are ready to eat it.

After this success, Martin is now geared up to find some more vegetarian meals that we can enjoy together. I am not sure that he will ever forgo his steak and chips, but it would be healthy to incorporate vegetarian in our meals,

The clock is ticking ...it’s time to act

At a time when we’re seeing record temperatures across large parts of Europe, north America and the Far the Canary Islands, and in Greece causing the evacuation of thousands of tourists, China has seen 52°C and Death Valley, in the US 54°C, and Canada, China, South Korea

is widely accepted that the human race is affecting the climate, dramatically, and that we must act to minimise these effects. And the time to act is now.

It’s not just about us either, we are affecting every species on Earth, on land and in our oceans.

Most of us are already doing

something, electric cars and hybrids are ever-more familiar with an expanding range of models,

and recycling has been part of putting the bin out for some years, saving manufacturing energy and materials, and lessening our

But more, much more, is needed to avoid the worst case scenarios that some anticipate, and we can all be part of the solution.

What do we do?

In the last few years we have all learned the painful monetary price of energy –gas, electricity, petrol and diesel – focusing minds on our boilers, switching off lights, not leaving appliances on standby and the real necessity of our motoring mileage. There is also an environmental cost.

Heat pumps, solar panels and wind power technologies can have

significant benefits in terms of greenhouse gas reductions and in cutting energy bills. Battery storage can harvest green energy when available or off-peak, and hold it for when needed.

Insulation is part of the strategy. Sufficient loft and wall insulation, draught free doors and windows, double or even triple glazing, even a good pair of curtains can help keep your hard-earned heat in. We also need to be cognisant of the unseen mileages that our lifestyle and habits add to our greenhouse gas footprint. 'Food miles' are a good example with every food transport mile adding to global warming. 'Shopping local' supports not only our appetite but also our local farmers, shops and high street, and therefore our communities. Farm shops and markets, and buying seasonal fruit and veg, are ways of reducing our food miles and environmental impact. Using local

'refill' type shops where packaging is at a minimum reduces plastics in circulation, in landfill and in our environment. In terms of wildfife your garden can play its part too.

Everyone loves the idea of a meadow, an important habitat, one of the rarest in the UK - we have lost 97% of them in the last century. Beautiful in their variety of wild flowers, meadows can support huge numbers of wildlife species, including bees-pollinators vital to our food production. A small wild flower 'meadow' in a corner of your garden is a step in the right direction...

Overall it is about being mindful of the big story, and adopting new habits, all small steps on a journey that we must make to look after the place we call home and the species we share it with.

At the moment there's no sign of a Plan B, so let's support our local planet...

Heat pumps use sustainable energy to generate heating and hot water for your home. With low running costs your household energy bills are reduced, it also removes the

need for fuel to be delivered and stored at home; a common problem for homes that are in off-gas areas and rely on alternative fuels. They operate using electricity (including from alternative sources such as solar power) and produce no emissions, making them much more environmentally friendly than traditional heating systems. Being MCS registered is a mark of quality. Using the Holt ensures that equipment meets good standards of performance and that installers are technically safe and competent. This means you as a consumer can take advantage of the Government’s £5000 Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS).

EV home charging installation, energy on tap to keep your wheels turning

We are Smart Home Technical, an electrical installation company based in Verwood, primarily specialising in solar PV, battery storage and EV charger installations. When deciding which EV charger you should have installed, it is best to speak to people in the know such as us!

For a start, all new EV chargers must feature smart functionality which include:

Ability to send and receive information. Ability to respond to signals to increase

Ability to change the time at which the charger uses electricity. There are different chargers which suit individuals’ different needs. Factors such as when you wish to charge, type of car, whether you have solar PV and which tariff

you are currently on are all aspects which can determine which charger is best for you. EV charging can cost as little as £0.07 per Kwh when using a Go tariff or similar which, normally equates to 2-3 miles, dependent on the vehicle.

There are currently Government grants towards the installation cost which are

rental properties and commercial premises. These grants are applied for by the company with OLEV which, of course, Smart Home Technical are.

Every EV charger installation should also be registered, by the installation company, with your Distribution Network Operator which, in this local area is SSE. The DNO needs to know the size and type of EV charger to understand how much electricity demand the charge point will require.

Never give up on giving up smoking

Good things start to happen when you stop smoking.

Every time you smoke a cigarette, your body is being flooded with thousands of poisonous chemicals, including arsenic and formaldehyde.

At least 70 of the chemicals in tobacco smoke cause cancer. It’s frightening. The bottom line is, there is no safe level of smoking – quitting completely is the only way you can protect your health from these risks.

The day you stop, your body starts clearing itself of toxins and begins to repair itself. Within a few days or weeks your senses of taste and smell improve, you’ll start to breathe more easily, and have more energy.

Your longer-term risks of cancer, lung disease, heart disease and stroke will be significantly reduced.

One year on, your risk of heart attack halves compared to a smoker’s. Right now, it’s Stoptober, the perfect time to take on tobacco and win. Be part of the nation’s biggest mass quit attempt - but with local support from LiveWell Dorset.

Register for a free quit pack and 1-2-1 coaching support. Choose from a range of options including face-to-face support from your local pharmacy, nicotine gum and patches in the post, a vape starter kit or – new for 2023 – a place at an Allen Carr Easyway stop smoking seminar.

LiveWell Coaches can help you identify your triggers and support you to overcome them.

Coaching sessions take place over the phone at a time that suits you. Call free on 0800 840 1628, visit livewelldorset.co.uk or scan the QR code on the advert below.

Stevie meets his Red Arrows heroes

This year’s Bournemouth Air Festival will always be memorable for a family supported by Diverse Abilities, Dorset’s Disability Charity.

Stevie Champ, who is supported by Diverse Abilities’ Supported Living Service, has always been the Red Arrow’s ‘number one fan’. Earlier this year he received a terminal cancer diagnosis and his support team wanted to make sure the time he has left is as special as possible. This is when the idea was born to try and achieve Stevie’s dream of meeting a Red Arrows pilot.

And, on the second day of the Bournemouth Air Festival Stevie, accompanied by his parents and two members of his support team, headed to the Marsham Court Hotel for a day out to remember, where Stevie and his parents received a very special meet and greet with not just one Red Arrows pilot, but 11 pilots and officers. An occasion which has only taken place once before when the Red Arrows met Queen Elizabeth II. Stevie was able to meet his heroes, as well as receiving a signed hat and pictures to remember the day.

Michelle Turner, supported living deputy manager, commented: “This was a once in a lifetime opportunity for a very special

person. It was a very emotional day for everyone involved, and we really want to thank the Red Arrows, the team at the Bournemouth Air Festival, and the Marsham Court Hotel for making this dream a reality.” Stevie is supported by Diverse Abilities’

Supported Living Team, who provide 24hour support seven days a week to adults with physical and learning disabilities in their own homes across Dorset. Visit diverseabilities.org.uk to find out more about the charity and the services it provides.

A space where all are valued

Fostering brings together people from all walks of life. Fostering children and young people is already very diverse; what we find is that those that come into the care system are within a diverse pool of people from all different walks of life, races, religion, and ethnicities. There are multiple circumstances that mean someone enters the foster care system, and each case is treated equally. We follow the same approach when recruiting for foster carers removing any barriers or stereotypes to fostering, Our fourth value is to Respect Difference – at Footprints we believe that the world would be a very boring place if we were all the same! Why is this the case? Well, once we embed a culture of difference, we can promote a safe space where everyone feels valued. The support groups that

Footprints offer is a great example of this, where all carers come together to share ideas and situations. An extract from a carer shines a perfect light on this saying that:

‘Every child wants someone who loves them and believes in them, someone who makes them feel safe and secure.’ We break down the misconception of the ‘perfect’ foster family, respecting that everyone lives their lives differently.

So when you apply to become a foster carer, Footprints are always open minded to understanding your fit to fostering regardless of your background or way of life. No matter where you come from, your background or way of life, if you can provide a safe and secure environment for a child or young person, footprints would like to hear from you!

Diamond Divas shine bright for hospice

Twelve months on from reaching a landmark £50k in their fundraising efforts, the Diamond Divas continue to lift their voices in support for the ‘Mac Unit’ hospice. The 22-strong ladies’ choir from Highcliffe started giving all proceeds from their performances and events to Macmillan Caring Locally, the small independent charity which supports the Macmillan Unit, 11 years ago.

“We were delighted to reach our £50,000 milestone this time last year and are thrilled to have already raised £7,000 in the last 12 months,” said Josie Spicer, choir coordinator.

“Many local shops and businesses generously donated raffle prizes for our recent coffee morning, which was held in the garden of one our members and raised £1,500.

“The weather was glorious, and we also had a wide variety of home-made cakes, which alone raised more than £266.

“In addition, there was a plant stall, book stall, crafts stall and tombola, which all proved popular.”

The Macmillan specialist palliative unit is situated in the grounds of Christchurch Hospital.

Josie continued: “As a choir we are whole-

heartedly dedicated to supporting Macmillan Caring Locally for as long as we can.

“We enjoy performing light-hearted music, usually with a comic poem and sometimes fancy dress and have many laughs together.

“We are also very lucky to have a brilliant pianist, Terry Hayden, who tries to keep us in order and in key!”

Neal Williams, trust secretary for Macmillan Caring Locally said: “The wonderful Diamond Divas bring joy to so many, both with their voices and their incredibly

Protect Your Home from Care Costs & Inheritance Tax with a Living Trust

Nobody likes to think about getting old, but it is certainly worth thinking about if you value your home. That is because your house could very well have a charge placed upon it or sold by the local council to pay for your care fees. If a person’s capital and savings including equity in their home is worth more than £23,250, they will have to fund their own care.

A living trust can shield your home and estate from care costs and Inheritance tax in the following ways.

Placing your main home into a living trust ring fences the property from any potential future care costs. Your property is free from Inheritance tax after 7yrs, probate on the property is avoided and protection is given to beneficiaries from both divorce & creditors.

With a living trust, you can be both a trustee and beneficiary. You can maintain control over your assets even after you pass away.

The situation won’t get better over time. The UK’s fastest-growing age group comprises those aged over 85. Councils will face even more pressure on budgets, leaving them with little choice but to continue to sell people’s homes.

generous hearts.

“The amount of money they have raised for us to date is simply phenomenal and helps us to continue to provide outstanding care and comfort to those who need it most in our community.”

The Diamond Divas will sing for any club or organisation in return for a donation and can be contacted on: 01425 280367.

How can chiropractic care benefit you?

A variety of medical professionals appropriately tout their ability to do more than just heal you in the short-term, concentrating their efforts instead on promoting long-term wellness. Thankfully, research and science have advanced to the point that it has become very possible to determine whether or not a medical profession is truly capable of benefiting someone in the long term. In this area, by any metric, the long-term benefits of chiropractic care are clear. Research has shown many long-term benefits of chiropractic care.

Eight examples of long-term care:

Reduced Neck Pain: Thankfully, many studies have shown that we can help with neck pain over an extended period of time, with some going as far as to say that the reduction of neck pain was relatively durable and long-lasting. These studies have found that self-reported neck pain can be reduced via neck adjustments and mobilisation and is thus one of the main long-term benefits of chiropractic care.

Reduced Back Pain: Most people think of the back when they think of chiropractic adjustments, and studies have found that this is the case for good reason – in the long term, adjustments can reduce back pain and make a noticeable improvement to the strength and flexibility of someone’s body.

Improved Posture: Many of chiropractic’s benefits are not about pain, but about wellness. Improvements to posture have been found in some case studies, with chiropractic adjustments being credited as improving the posture of people studied. These changes are long-term, and improved posture has a variety of other positive physical benefits as well, showing how improved posture is one of the biggest long-term benefits of chiropractic care.

Injury Prevention: Studies have found that chiropractic adjustments can help prevent injury by adjusting posture, helping injuries heal, and potentially reducing malfunctions in our bodies. By preventing injury, our body can reap long-term benefits.

CHIROPRACTIC & MASSAGE THERAPY TREATMENTS

We strive to give every patient the absolute best chiropractic and massage care , as well as providing outstanding customer service. We are a motivated team passionate about getting you better and enabling you to live a pain free life, getting you the best version for you !

Conditions we can treat:

• Migraines

• Lower Back Pain

• Joint Pain

• Frozen Shoulder

• Tennis Elbow

• Neck Ache

• Sports Therapy

Headache Reduction: Other studies have found that chiropractic is capable of reducing headaches, via neck and back adjustments. These positive changes can have a big improvement on our quality of life and overall functionality.

Increased Balance: Chiropractic adjustments can improve balance and reduce dizziness. These changes – which can be durable –occur when neck and back adjustments can reduce injury and remove the reasons for such dizziness.

Increased Flexibility: Chiropractic adjustments can improve flexibility and range of motion making it easier for you to move, get exercise, reduce stiffness, and stay comfortable.

Relieving Chronic Conditions: Studies have come to the conclusion that chiropractic can potentially slow down the damage and pain caused by certain conditions.

This includes bone loss and pain caused by osteoporosis.

As a result, some people who suffer from long-term or debilitating conditions like this may see significant benefits from chiropractic adjustments or care.

n If you are suffering from any of the above issues, or if you believe that chiropractic can positively affect your life, contact us.

Charity has been going for 10 years

From its dedicated bra-fitting and wig service, to its 13 local stores, Dorset breast cancer support charity Going for Bust has made an enormous difference in its first 10 years.

It all started in 2013 in West Moors, with a charity shop to raise money to pay for practical support for women undergoing treatment for breast cancer in the Dorset and West Hampshire area, and to support hospitals with equipment and other needs.

Jackie Matthews, who has had treatment for breast cancer, was one of the people who helped in West Moors and is now relief manager for the stores, which range from Christchurch and Ringwood in the east, to Swanage in the west.

“We don’t fund research but we do give money towards equipment and new therapies used in hospitals or hospices in this area,” says Jackie.

“If Poole hospital came to us saying they needed a new piece of equipment to help with a new treatment and they needed £20,000, we may say here, have £15,000.”

Earlier this year, they donated £10,000 to Poole radiotherapy department, and, overall, have

WHAT IS CBD?

donated well over £500,000 to a variety of breast cancer-related services and hospitals, stretching from Southampton to Yeovil. From their Wimborne support centre, they also run a successful wig and bra fitting service, as well as offering relaxing therapies. Over the past decade, says Jackie, the fitting services have become even more important, as high-street stores close and more people have to use online retailers.

“Ordering online can mean ill-fitting bras and wigs but we offer the chance for women to try on as many as possible,” says Jackie.

They even have a local hairdresser who will cut and style a wig for breast cancer patients free of charge.

This, plus their friendly high street presence, has created an atmosphere where

people can talk more about breast cancer. “I’ve noticed that women are more open, they’ll discuss the drugs they have been prescribed or other issues,” says Jackie.

To celebrate Going for Bust’s first decade, they are holding a Gala Dinner on Saturday, November 11, at Bournemouth’s Orchid Hotel.

Along with a three-course dinner, there will be a raffle, including

prizes such as a luxury weekend away and a signed Joe Wicks book, an auction and a disco. Anyone who makes a £50 donation to the charity can receive a ticket for the Gala Dinner.

“It’s our first gala dinner so we’re hoping to see lots of our corporate friends there, to support the charity and have a good time,” says Jackie.

Hospice hooray as supporter wins jackpot

Jackie Shanahan couldn’t believe her luck when she received a call from LewisManning Hospice Care’s Fundraising Team to let her know that she’d won an incredible £25,000 in the weekly hospice draw. Having signed up to the hospice lottery back in September 2022, Jackie has been playing two numbers each week.

Jackie - pictured right with staff nurse Hannah Quick - said: “I joined the lottery as I wanted to give something back to the hospice following the amazing support and care that the Lymphoedema Clinic gave my sister before she died.

“They were brilliant and for that I’m so grateful.

“I never thought I would win anything when I signed up, I’m slightly in shock but extremely happy with my win!”

Hospice director of fundraising Tom Goodinge said: “We really appreciate the support that Jackie gives us and are so happy that one of our patient’s family members has won the rollover.

“The lottery offers weekly prizes totalling £5,200, as well as three Super Draws of £10,000 each year and a rollover up to £25,000.

“The lottery is a fantastic way to support the charity, giving players the opportunity to win great prizes, for just £5 per month.

“This support ensures that the hospice has a sustainable source of income to plan into the future and to enable us to continue to provide outstanding end-of-life care to patients

and their loved ones facing life-limiting illnesses across East Dorset, Bournemouth, Christchurch, Purbeck and West Hampshire.” Anyone wishing to take part in the LewisManning Lottery is urged to sign up at localhospicelottery.org/hospices/lewismanning-hospice.

Hannah’s

Well, autumn is here, the leaves are showing the first signs of turning, windfall apples are everywhere, and the days are now noticeably shorter. I find this time of year hard, even though there is so much that can be done in the garden and outside and it’s an exciting and often beautiful time of year. SAD is a common thread among many of us, but I know that being outside, getting dirty, really helps ease this uneasiness.

I must admit however, I am known to take this to the extreme fairly often, and my neighbours must think I am slightly ridiculously obsessed as I garden/faff in the garage at 8pm with a head torch! And no I’m not joking!!

Here’s what you can do: Split and move perennials, and plant or move shrubs October is a great time to lift, divide and move perennials

that either need curtailing, or relocating to a better position within the border.

It’s a good idea to routinely lift and divide most perennials every three years to keep them young and productive.

You can do this in spring if needed, but autumn is better as they have a chance to make some root and are therefore better able to manage water and nutrition needs next summer. Hold off dividing grasses

her, email:hannah.hobbschell@ outlook.com including a picture if relevant

however, as these are better done in spring.

A note – splitting and dividing are the same thing, and lift simply means to dig them up roots and all!

Some plants can be really tough to divide, I find a saw or ‘hori hori’ works fine!

Deciduous shrubs (those that lose their leaves), are good to move now if needed, make sure you lift them with as many of their roots as possible. New shrubs can also be planted now, and it’s a great time to plant new hedges and trees.

n The autumn colour, and smell, of Cercidiphyllum japonicum, or Katsura tree, make it one of my favourite trees. It also has a great pyramidal shape which makes it easy to fit into gardens

Tend lawns and sow wildflower seeds on bare soil

Keep mowing, and apply food now. I don’t use moss killer now, instead I use an organic fertiliser and moss and thatch muncher. Mo Bacter is one brand of this, but there are others. These fairly new products contain a bacteria that eats thatch and moss, which is really handy!

There is limited need to scarify, it’s harmless to animals and wildlife, is completely organic and doesn’t damage border plants nor discolour lawns. I find I still need to scarify (or rake – same thing!) a little to get the best results, and you need to be consistent to get the best results from these products.

I will be scarifying in October. Plant up autumn/winter pots

Pansies, cyclamen, primroses etc are all in the shops now, and its good to get them in asap to give them a chance to settle in and grow a bit before the winter sets in.

All these plants will happily go through the winter and give you a spring flower display too, so you do get good value if you plant up now.

Choose a central evergreen and plant round it with the pansies, cyclamen etc. And add a bit of trailing ivy too for added interest.

Make sure to keep an eye on water... pots dry out and often miss any rain we have. Have fun!

Autumn show by art society

Broadstone Artists will exhibit new and original work at their second exhibition in what is the Art Society’s 70th year.

The Autumn Exhibition opens for nine days from Saturday, October 21, from 10am-4pm daily, at the Youth Centre in Tudor Road, Broadstone. Much of the work will have been completed in Dorset over the summer when artists venture out with easels and materials to capture views no matter what the weather brings.

A sub-theme is semi-abstract landscape and the exhibition will also feature a wide selection of paintings, prints, 3D work and greetings cards to view and to buy.

Original art postcards will be available for a £5 donation to Dorset Mind, the mental health charity that is supported by the Art Society this year. Following the exhibition there will be an online auction in aid of Dorset Mind where paintings can be secured for a good price and for a good cause – all donated by society members.

What’s in a (village) name?

When it comes to fascinating place-names, the county of Dorset is often cited as one of the best.

And with Ryme Intrinseca, Bishop’s Caundle and Fifehead Magdalen – not to mention the beloved Shitterton in the mix, it’s not surprising. What these names mean, however, is just as fascinating and has been the subject of a 40-year study by the English Place-Names Society, a group of academics devoted to finding out exactly why places like Piddletrenthide acquired their handle.

Their survey, which covers

the rest of the country, too, is grounded in the collection of an enormous amount of evidence and linguistic expertise. These explain the origin of many thousands of place-names including villages, woods, towns, lanes, fields, and even modern street names.

Mozart in remembrance

Wimborne Minster Church will be resounding to the strains of Mozart’s much-loved Requiem on Saturday, November 11 at 7.30pm, presented by the Bournemouth Bach Choir and their associated chamber orchestra.

Mozart

Requiem

The rousing Dies Irae, the lamenting Lacrimosa and the consoling Lux Aeterna will be under the baton of Tim Hooper, while the quartet of soloists will be Emily Bradley (soprano), Frances Bourne (mezzo soprano), Michael Aitkenhead (tenor) and Thomas Humphreys (baritone). The programme will also include Anton Bruckner’s Sacred Choruses and Purcell’s Funeral Music For Queen Mary, chosen to be appropriate to the season of Remembrance.

Mozart composed his Requiem in 1791 and it is well known that it was left as a series of fragments at his death on December 5 of that year. Legends and speculations, some of which were popularised in Peter Schaffer’s

stage-play Amadeus and the film which was created from it, have led to mystery and conspiracy theories about Mozart’s death, but later scholars have established that the funeral rites for the prodigious composer, only 35 at his death, were appropriate for his status and in keeping with customs of the day.

It is touching to think that he must have understood that it was likely that his Requiem Mass (completed by his students and others) would be his final composition and his own epitaph. Tickets for the concert will be available from Square Records in Wimborne as well as online at www.ticketsource.co.uk/ bournemouth-bach-choir and at the door.

Branagh back on the straight and Poirot

The clues: A creepy building, a curious demise, un détective Belge and a cast of glamorous suspects.

Answer: Agatha Christie, of course. “Every murderer is somebody’s old friend,” says the maniacally moustachioed Hercule Poirot in 20th Century’s third and muchanticipated mystery, A Haunting In Venice (PG-13).

This franchise has been a huge success, not just due to Christie’s inimitable twistyturny plotting and top-oftheir-game actors, but to the quiet depth and humanity that Kenneth Branagh (also directing this one) brings to Hercule Poirot.

We find our crime-cracking hero retired and living in exile by choice in an eerie post-Second World War Venice. Oh, and it’s All Hallows Eve. As is always the case, Poirot unwittingly

steps into a hot mess of drama and – reflecting a growing trend for being spooked in this endof-days climate in which we’re living – an undercurrent of the supernatural, when he reluctantly attends a séance. Naturally, a fellow table gripper is murdered and the quirky detective is forced to uncover the killeragain.

At early screenings, audiences hailed this as the best Poirot outing yet, no doubt helped by an acting dream team that, along with Branagh and his ice-cold, knowing eyes, includes, Jamie Dornan, Michelle Yeoh and Tina Fey. Agatha Christie with jumpscares? Pass me my portmanteau, I’m in!

Missing live music? Want to inspire the kids?

Bringing the arts and culture to far-flung corners of Dorset is Artsreach’s forte - so it’s no surprise that it works closely with Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s bespoke community performance series, On Your Doorstep. They take mid-scale chamber ensembles to community venues, presenting programmes for families, new audiences and seasoned concert-goers.

Artsreach Director, Kerry Bartlett said: “We’ve loved working to present recitals in village halls, churches and theatres right across the county, and to audiences who may never have experienced a professional classical ensemble before.”

Artist is floored by wonders of wetlands

Some artists go to dizzying heights in search of inspiration, Danny Byrne’s approach is far more down-to-earth.

The Dorset painter, renowned for his striking portraits, has taken his artistic talents to new depths by literally getting down and dirty in the New Forest... and the result is a dazzling collection, inspired by its ponds, puddles and streams.

Finding himself drawn to the forest’s natural carpet of lush wetlands, Ringwood-based Danny, who’s appeared on Sky TV’s Portrait Art Competition, was inspired to paint a series of vibrant, deep-dive pieces that capture the unique landscapes in all their beauty and intrigue.

“Embarking on an artistic journey like no other, I can be seen knee-deep - even up to my neck! - in the subterranean mires, with head low and eyes fixed on the hidden wonders lurking beneath the surface.

“It all happens here,” Danny explains, “life, birth, murder, war and death. Sometimes all in a day. These wetlands are teeming with stories waiting to be told.”

As one of the most intact networks of wetland habitat in Western Europe, the New Forest has long been an important player in the area’s natural splendour.

It’s quagmires, bogs, ponds,

rivers, and streams not only provide a glorious backdrop, but are why it’s been designated a National Park.

Danny’s motivation for creating the extraordinary aspects of this incomparable landscape was to celebrate and preserve the precious, natural heritage that we have on our doorstep. His visual homage to what underpins our ancient woodlands can be seen in a new exhibition also featuring a collection of original landscape and portrait paintings. It will be accompanied by a mesmerising film, inspired by people who intimately understand and appreciate the New Forest and it’s water.

We seem to have transitioned so quickly from the lighter evenings and the longer days of the summer season to shorter daylight hours and the need to wear a sweater or at least an extra layer!

Happily, autumn is always embraced with enthusiasm at High Mead Farm; it means harvest and the satisfaction of enjoying the fruits of our efforts. Harvest has delivered us lots of lovely tomatoes this year, along with a few rarer treasures, such as cucamelon (a

The money was quickly spent on new tyres for the Farm’s trolley. Some of our equipment at High Mead is less conventional than you might expect, we do have a scooter, but it is less motor and more mobility. It gets used for all sorts of activities, but towing with it is a firm favourite, be that trailer-loads of wood, a magnetic bar that collects nails and screws from outside the wood bay and across the car park, and even the odd caravan on occasions! It is a much-used and much-loved mode of transport. With the change of season, we are

seeing some subtle changes to our stock.

The Farm’s honey supply has been boosted with raw heather honey in addition to our usual comb, runny and set honey. Gilly and Tallulah, our Kunekune pigs, have had a temporary move as the damp weather prompted a sudden emergence of Atropa Belladonna in their pen (Deadly Nightshade). The plant, whilst beautiful with its purple and green bell-shaped flowers and shiny black berries, can be deadly, as the name suggests. Worried the piggies might have found the move unsettling, I paid them a visit, only to find

Call for more information on drivers with medical issues

The DVLA has issued a call for evidence regarding driver licensing for people with medical conditions which has been welcomed by the AA Charitable Trust and independent road safety campaigner Meera Naran MBE.Processes governing policy for healthcare professionals to refer drivers with neurocognitive disorders to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency need to be more joined-up according to road safety campaigner Meera Naran MBE. Having lost her eight-yearold son Dev, in a tragic traffic collision five years ago, Meera Naran wants the current

referral policy for those with conditions such as Parkinson’s Disease, Dementia or Alzheimer’s to be updated. Dev died in a collision near Birmingham when a truck hit the stationary car he was in.

Meera is using the fifth year since her son’s death to highlight the need for a new framework to transfer information about drivers diagnosed with certain medical conditions that impact their driving from medical staff to the DVLA.

By 2035 there will be 21 million older drivers on the UK’s roads, and it is forecast that the number of those with dementia will exceed two million by 2051. But worryingly, there are no precise figures which show how many older drivers diagnosed with neurocognitive disorders, currently have licences.

Golden girl Isabella conquers world in Rio

“When I finished the race I didn’t know I’d won because in para swimming there are variations in disability, so the results are worked out at the end of the race.”

That was the nail-biting situation that star para swimmer, Isabella Haynes from Wimborne found herself in before being declared the gold-medal winner at this year’s World School Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in August.

The Queen Elizabeth (QE) School student added: “It was amazing when they announced that the winner in the 200m freestyle was ‘Isabella from England’ and I went to the podium.”

After coming out top in the 200m freestyle, further accolades followed as Isabella also won silver in the 200m medley and, thanks to a superb season in the pool, she was named English Schools Swimming Association’s top female para athlete. “I train every morning and sometimes it is hard waking up but I know I’ve just got to do it,” she says.

“While I was in Rio, I was named the English Schools top para athlete which was incredible.

“I hope to get through to the Paralympics –maybe not the next one, but hopefully the one after.”

The 14-year-old, Year 10 pupil, a right-leg amputee since birth, learned to swim at Ferndown and joined Wimborne Wagtails swimming club for the disabled based at the QE pool.

The tenacious young athlete, who has a twin sister Silvana and an older brother Sebastian, then progressed to Swim

Bournemouth which enables individuals to hone their skills and maximise their potential, and which is where she now trains.

Isabella attended St John’s First and Allenbourn Middle schools, before progressing to QE; all three are part of Initio Learning Trust which works with school leaders to help them realise their ambitions for their students.

Her parents, Elizabeth and Martin said: “We are very proud of Isabella and are grateful to everyone who helped.

“Allenbourn School held a cake sale to raise money for the Rio trip and QE and Swim Bournemouth have been incredibly supportive too.”

Liz West, CEO of Initio Learning Trust, said: “Everyone at the Trust is so chuffed to hear of Isabella’s success. She has trained so hard for so long and is extremely dedicated.”

Work begins on town sports pitch

Work has started on the new 3G sports pitch at the Burgate School and Sixth Form in Fordingbridge, following a £250,000 grant from New Forest District Council. The council said the facility, which is being paid for from the funds paid by developers, would enhance the existing provision at the school, and would open in February 2024. The council’s portfolio holder for planning and economy, Derek Tripp, said: “ We have worked with the school to develop an open space that will benefit the local football and rugby clubs as well as being open for community events. It will be a major boost to all-weather sports provision and will allow multiple practice or matches to operate at the same time.”

Records routed by ‘Rocketman’ Reza

Seventeen-year-old Reza Seewooruthun, from Poole, spent his birthday weekend becoming the first driver to complete the ‘clean sweep’ and lead every lap of the weekend at the Ginetta Junior Championship.

The teen stunned crowds at Brands Hatch by leading every lap of each of the three races.

The ‘R Racing’ speedster also secured two poles and the fastest lap over the weekend.

Reza, a former English Kart Champion, is in his first year of car racing and will be completing his first full season at Donington at the end of October.

His efforts at Brands Hatch mean he has a strong chance of finishing in the top three of the drivers’ championship.

In the 10 years since the formation of the championship, no driver has won all three races over a weekend, achieving the ‘clean sweep’ and led every lap of every race.

Until Reza ‘the rocketman’ arrived.

Domestic abuse in the home and elsewhere – a male perspective

We have all been exposed to some of the events reported in the press concerning abuse to men at the hands of women. But what if this level of abuse extends to men at home, perpetrated by their female partners?

There are legal remedies available to both men and women who experience physical and/or psychological abuse from their partners.

These remedies are provided in existing law, which addresses all forms of harm: The Domestic Abuse Act 2021.

Section 76 of the Serious Crime Act 2015 introduced a new criminal offence of controlling or coercive behaviour in intimate or family relationships. This offence helps avoid the arduous task of proving a pattern of behaviour amounting to harassment. While cases of actual murder gain significant attention, there are more common, but often unseen, instances of systematic abuse

against men. For example, a woman was recently jailed for life for murdering her husband due to systematic abuse, and another case involved a prison reform boss who subjected her husband to 15 years of abuse and received a four-year jail sentence. These cases raise the question of why such abuse often goes unnoticed. Society tends to unfairly prejudge men as the main providers and protectors, making it difficult for them to fight back. They are expected to conform to traditional roles and face potential repercussions if they challenge societal norms. This societal dynamic can deter men from seeking help or taking action. At Harold G Walker, we have a team of highly experienced family law practitioners ready to assist you with complete confidentiality. Our professionals can provide guidance, advice, and solutions to address your situation.

Police advice after thefts from garages

More than 20 shed and garage break-ins have been reported in Poole since the beginning of August.

Dorset Police said officers are investigating the series of incidents, which have mainly occurred at night, in the areas of Parkstone, Branksome and Canford Cliffs.

A police spokesman said offenders have cut door locks or forced doors open with crowbars, before making off with high-value items such as bikes, e-bikes and power tools. Now, officers are urging anyone in the BH13, BH14 or BH15 postcode areas to remain vigilant and if possible take extra precautions to safeguard their sheds and garages. They said members of the public may wish to:

Attach a secondary lock to the base of the garage

Alarm the outer building; this can be done with a single alarm or it can be linked to the main house alarm if you have one Do not leave tools and ladders out to potentially assist offenders

Place bins behind locked gates or secure them to a fixed point using a chain and padlock

Use curtains, blinds or one-way window film on shed or garage windows to make sure criminals cannot see what is inside

Don’t post pictures on social media of your bike, or your routes on fitness trackers/apps that show your start/finish point as offenders may be able to determine the home address of where your bike is stored Forensically mark and register your bikes, tools or other expensive items using an accredited forensic marking solution. Police Sergeant Euan Douglas, of the Neighbourhood Enforcement Team for Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, said: “We are continuing to explore a number of investigative opportunities around these burglaries.

“I would like to take this opportunity to urge residents to make sure they leave their garages secure at all times so they are not an easy target for offenders, and to consider additional security such as home CCTV systems and alarms.

“I would also encourage members of the public who witness any suspicious behaviour to report it to Dorset Police or anonymously at Crimestoppers.”

Anyone with information should contact Dorset Police via dorset.police.uk or call 101. They can also contact Crimestoppers. anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Make your new home more eco-friendly

New home, new you! Moving house is the perfect time to change habits to help the fight against climate change and make your home eco-friendly.

Here are some simple tips from the experts at Armishaws Removals that anyone can try:

Ditch the Sponge

Most sponges and scouring pads are made from non-renewable sources and harmful chemicals.

They’re also mostly shipped in from abroad. Switch to reusable (washable) cloths or alternatives.

Buy Seasonal

Strawberries in December were once unheard of, but today seasonal fruits are available all year round. And while the price is great, the cost to the environment is not so good. Sticking to seasonal, homegrown produce will curb the carbon.

Buy British

Buying British produce such as meat, veg and fruit can reduce the airmiles and carbon footprint of your grub.

When buying, check for the British Tractor symbol.

Get milk delivered

Ah the good old days, when milk came in reusable bottles, delivered by electric,

On The Move

straight to your door. Stepping back in time and swapping out plastic bottles for reusable glass could reduce plastic waste in the UK by 10’s of tonnes per year.

Food packaging

Food packaging is one of the biggest causes of plastic waste in our homes. Rather than pre-packaged supermarket fruit and veg, opt for loose vegetables or head to your local greengrocer, farm shop or sign up to a veg box scheme. You should also consider airmiles: by only buying locally-grown produce, you’ll dramatically reduce the airmiles your spuds will have racked up.

Beauty products

Many beauty products can also be greener, facial wipes, cleanser, toner, toothpaste shampoo, handwash, shower gel... It’s not just the chemicals in the products, consider the packaging.

There are chemical-free grooming alternatives on the market that come in biodegradable packaging.

Clothing

Yep, fashion is going out of fashion. The new trend isn’t to buy new, if you really want to be fashionable, keep wearing your old clothes rather than throwing away and

replacing perfectly wearable items. It’s not just the landfill, the carbon footprint involved in making and transporting new clothes is huge!

Don’t throw, donate

If you have finished with an item of clothing and there’s still wear in it, consider donating it or selling it online to give it a second life.

Switch to green energyThere are energy providers that only use electricity sourced from sustainable suppliers (wind, solar, hydro, etc). As consumers we can create demand and force the major energy giants to see the demand for fossil fuel is lessening.

Stop burning logs

Whatever fuel you use, wood burners create carbon dioxide. Burning wood creates more CO2 than oil, gas or coal.
