Food bank’s first family fun day

More than 250 children and adults came together to enjoy Wimborne Food Bank’s first Family Fun Day on the Wimborne Rugby Club pitch. The pitch was abuzz with activity as families enjoyed playing large outdoor games and face painting, food, ice-cream and competitions. Children’s entertainer Krazy Kev captivated the children with his antics. The Creature Teacher’s brought lots of creepy crawlies for children to see close-up including reptiles and barn owls. The event was opened by the Town Crier

and the Mayor Carol Butter also attended the event to find out more about the vital community work the food bank does. Wimborne Food Bank supports on average 30 local families a week with food as well as offering financial and money debt advice. It also helps fund essential home appliances such as fridges and cookers. The next event is on Sunday, August 28, on Wimborne Rugby Club Pitch and is free for families supported by the food bank. For more information on events and how to support the food bank, follow their Facebook and Instagram page.

Petition aims to protect wildlife

by Faith Eckersall Nature campaigners are asking Dorset residents to sign their petition to help force the Government into setting stronger targets for nature recovery. Dorset Wildlife Trust says proposed new UK targets could mean less wildlife for future generations. The details will be finalised by June 27. However, the Trust says the long-term target currently being proposed for nature’s recovery aims to have just 10 per cent more nature in 2042 than 2030 levels – by which time the state of our natural world is expected to have declined even further. In Dorset more than 400 species recorded in the past are thought to be extinct. You can sign the petition at: wildlifetrusts.org/naturedeserves-better.

n Computer generated images of the urban retirement village on the former Wimborne Market site

Retirement village under way by Andrew Diprose dorsetbiznews.co.uk Work has started in Wimborne on McCarthy Stone’s first urban retirement village in the UK. The Bournemouth-based retirement housing developer is delivering a £41million housing scheme. It comprises 67 one and two-bedroom extra care apartments, 32 extra care bungalows and two-storey chalets as well as nine open market houses. The village will feature a wellbeing hub, circular fitness route, vegetable garden, village green, bistro and dining areas all paired with the support of 24-hour flexible care. McCarthy Stone says it is looking to create a readymade supportive and vibrant community for its residents to access, whilst retaining their independence and involvement in the wider local area. Law firm Lester Aldridge advised the developer on the purchase of the former Wimborne Market site. Planning permission for the village was granted last year. Dorset Council predicts the number of older people in

the county will rise by 60 per cent by 2033. Following the recent levelling-up White Paper, a new government task force was launched on the issue of older people’s housing, designed to look at ways to provide better choice, quality and security of housing for older people. It has been estimated that some three million pensioners would like to downsize but cannot do so because of the lack of suitable housing, with only some 7,000 homes for the elderly being built each year. Ed Garcia, divisional land director (Southern) for McCarthy Stone, said: “We are delighted to be delivering our first urban retirement village to the historic market

town of Wimborne Minster. “We had a great team of professionals working with us. “We are grateful to the George family for agreeing to sell the site to us and allowing us the opportunity to deliver our concept scheme.” Lester Aldridge’s team was led by Mark Benham, head of real estate group. He said: “There is a huge demand for all types of housing in east Dorset, including specialist housing for older people. “McCarthy Stone’s scheme will help to increase the housing choices available for the local community and will free up family homes for the next generation.”

A petition urging BCP Council to install a cremator at Poole crematorium has amassed nearly 3,000 signatures. While the facility is being upgraded at a cost of more than £500,000 for Phase 1, its old cremators won’t be replaced. The petition was launched by resident Tony Reeves who believes the council is prioritising Bournemouth over Poole. Nick Douch, managing director of Douch Family Funeral Directors has signed the petition and is urging others to add their names. He said: “With no cremators at Poole, deceased bodies have to be shuttled to Bournemouth.” The petition can be found at savepoolecrem.org.

A fond farewell for popular Gary Have your say on Congregations and communities surrounding the seven Avon Valley Churches gathered in hordes for Revd Canon Gary Philbrick’s farewell service at Burgate School and Sixth Form in Fordingbridge last week. Moving tributes, anecdotes, photos and hymns were shared and enjoyed by the many there to celebrate his ministry as Rector of Avon Valley Churches, throughout the parish, from 2013-2022. Gary, right, has been rector, preacher, bell ringer, pianist, organist, composer, mentor and friend to many and so much more. Gary was presented with a line drawing of all seven churches in the parish by artist Jen Oulton, as well as a gift from the Fordingbridge Air Cadets, just one group of people Gary supported in the community. Conducted by Hazel Ricketts and accompanied by Tim Ruffer, the St Mary’s Fordingbridge Choir then performed a moving rendition of Gaelic Blessing, written and arranged by Gary himself. Gary said: “I thank you, Avon Valley Churches, for the love, kindness and support you have shown me over these last years.

coastal strategy

“I am grateful for the opportunities I have had to minister in this place. “As I leave, I carry with me all that I have learned here.” Gary now begins a new chapter as Cathedral Chaplain at Winchester Cathedral. He will combine his work as chaplain, in which he will be responsible for the pastoral care and support of cathedral staff, volunteers and regular worshippers, with that of Assistant Archdeacon for the Diocese of Winchester.

by Faith Eckersall There’s still time to have your say on the development of the new Christchurch Bay coastal strategy being worked on by New Forest and BCP councils. The strategy will guide how the risks of flooding and erosion may be sustainably managed for the next 100 years in Christchurch Bay; from Hengistbury Head Long Groyne to Hurst Spit, encompassing Christchurch Harbour. The strategy is being produced with the Environment Agency. As well as informing how coastal communities may be protected, it will also consider the effects of predicted climate change, including sea level rise and increased levels of storminess. The Have your Say on-line survey: bcpcouncil.gov.uk/ christchurchstrategy phase2 is running until June 26. The final strategy will be adopted in 2024. Government must honour its pledge

UNDER THREAT?... Rural Dorset

Just a modest increase in investment in our Green Belts would benefit nearly half the population. At CPRE we’re urging Government to honour its pledge to protect and enhance these lands and have published a report asking it to deliver funds to meet its Levelling Up Bill commitment to ‘improve Green Belts around towns and cities’. The report is both timely and important as I understand that Dorset Council is considering relaxing the Green Belt designations on ground of ‘exceptional circumstances’ and a commitment from Government to increase funding for their protection and enhancement would send a powerful message that it’s serious in its aim to develop ‘brownfield first’. The term ‘exceptional circumstances’ is a big

problem locally, being used to justify removal of land from Green Belts for development - often of large houses that don’t address the lack of affordable housing for Dorset residents. Seventy per cent of Green Belt around Wimborne alone has been removed for development. This power has also been used to remove Green Belt protection from the countryside close to many in BCP and East Dorset, particularly in the Stour Valley. The report analyses of the geographical spread of agri-environment schemes and considers the financial implications of the Environmental Land Management schemes - soon to be introduced. These schemes will replace agricultural and land management subsidies and

Re: Government failures dominate complaints (NS&A, May 20). Mr Chope MP bemoans the decline in the delivery of public services but conveniently ignores the fact that the years and years of unnecessary austerity since this Conservative government came to office in 2010 has led to considerable reduction in staffing and resources allocated to public services. With the many experienced staff discarded and budgets reduced, service standards were bound to decline and they will only improve if staff and services are properly resourced.

Cartoon by Lyndon Wall justsocaricatures.co.uk

will be how Government funds its commitment to safeguard and improve Green Belt land. It is vital that these schemes recognise the benefits to be achieved by that investment, not least for urban dwellers. Dorset residents, please write to your MPs, ward councillors,

parish councillors, drawing attention to this threat to the Green Belts, urging them to pressurise the Government. Please visit cpre.org.uk/wpcontent/uploads/2022/05/ CPRE_Countryside_Next_ Door.pdf. Peter Bowyer Chairman, Dorset CPRE

Frost-free fete Bemoaning issues caused by his own party The Ice Queen will wow the

At the outset of the Covid pandemic, both national and local government struggled to respond promptly, clearly showing the impact of inadequate funding in the public sector since 2010. My guess is that of the 100,000 increase in the number of civil servants claimed by Mr Chope, a large percentage of those would have been employed trying to implement failed policies that his government have tried to implement - Brexit being an obvious example. They even had a celebrity in their midst – Maggie the Seaside Baker, pictured right, who was a contestant in Channel 4’s ‘Great British Bake Off”. Maggie kindly baked and donated a spectacular coffee and walnut cake for the tombola and entertained attendees with her baking stories from inside the famous tent. The event took place within the hospice car park and boasted a huge variety of mouth-watering display of cakes and sweet treats for people to make a donation for. Traditional scones were kindly donated by Mark

As well as cream teas, guests also enjoyed homemade creations, including chocolate brownies, jubileethemed biscuits and cakes fit for royalty.

A tea party wouldn’t be complete without a proper cup of tea, and thanks were given to Dorset Tea for providing all the tea bags and Asda Bournemouth for supplying coffee and flavoured water. Guests were treated to the musical sounds of Stuart ‘The Piano Man’, who played a variety of popular songs. Thanks to everybody that came along and made the afternoon so special, the donations helped to raise more than £1,000, which will go towards funding the hospice’s free of charge services across East Dorset and Purbeck. Celebrating another Platinum Jubilee! Well-known local legend Ken Hoare and his wife Sylvia have been celebrating their Platinum Jubilee alongside someone nearly as famous! Kenneth George Hoare, only son of Earnest George Hoare and Florance Lillian Hoare and Sylvia were married on June 7, 1952, at Hampreston Church, with the reception at the Innisfail Hotel off New road Ferndown, now replaced with many bungalows. Ken’s father started his haulage business when he left the Army in 1918 with horses and carts, hauling timber from the New Forest to Ringwood railway station. He then excavated sand and gravel from local pits and supplied local builders. His first vehicle was a Model T Ford, he then had an agreement with Lord Wimborne to rent a parcel of land at Little Canford where he installed a gravel washing

and grading machine. In those days all the gravel was excavated by pick and shovelled onto half-ton skips and winched to the washing plant. That area of land is now the Wessex Water Depot. Ken’s father took him away from school at the age of 13 to work in that quarry operating a new gravel washing plant. It was not long before Ken was driving a dumper and a lorry in the quarry at the age of 14 and at 15 he was

driving a 15-ton Dragline excavator, dredging gravel from below water level and loading it onto dumpers. On June 3,1944, he was called up into the Army and served in the REME servicing diesel engines on the gun sites defending London and in 1945 he was sent to join a regiment bound for the Middle East, After three years out there he was demobbed. Back home in his father’s workshop he was soon repairing vehicles and various plant equipment.

His father passed away in 1951 which left Ken and his mother to carry on the business. Due to the pressure of working long hours Ken joined the West Hants Motor Club to have some weekends away taking part in hillclimbing with his VW 1300 Beetle and in 1966 became the British Champion, an achiecement he repeated in 1970 driving a 1300 VW Golf. He then took up autocrossing and rally -cross, competing for 37years. The firm expanded with two gravel quarries and two sand quarries, 12 vehicles (four and eight-wheelers) with 30 employed personnel. Due to the recession the firm ceased trading in 1989 after 71 years. Sylvia and Ken had two sons, who are both married, and they have five grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren..

Toasts, tiaras and trifles to mark Queen Elizabeth’s 70-year reign Lorraine Gibson takes a look at just some of the right-royal celebrations that took place around our area over the Platinum Jubilee weekend

There was great excitement at Kings Park Care Home, Ferndown, as residents and staff created Jubileethemed decorations and were

entertained by musicians. There was also a visit to St. Mary’s Church for the Jubilee Beacon lighting, a Queen Liz quiz and a big street party,

Platinum Jubilee Celebrations Round-up

More importantly, it was a time for the whole home to come together to celebrate and reminisce about what the Queen meant to them all. Sohail Daniel, general manager at the home said: “We’ve had a brilliant day, it has been such fun. Our staff and residents love the Queen, so it has been a real collaborative process - thinking about how we wanted to celebrate, planning activities, decorating the home and creating the party food. “It was so lovely to be able to invite our friends and family to come and join us for a proper celebration too.” Resident Pat said: “The Queen is an amazing lady. It is remarkable to think she has been on the throne for 70 years, such an achievement! “I can remember the Coronation and the

street party we had then and this was just as much fun. We all wanted to say ‘thank you’ for all that the Queen has done for this country.” n Pupils at St John’s First School in Wimborne began the Jubilee celebrations before breaking for half term. Having spent the day making crowns and enjoying a lunchtime ‘street party’ with neighbouring St John’s pre-school, parents were invited for a show. The children, wearing red, white and blue, paraded around the playground waving Union Flags and carrying an enormous crown they’d made. They then gave readings, performed a recorder recital, sang the National Anthem and belted out the church song

‘All Through History’ with new words written by teaching assistant Aly Selby. A superlative demonstration of Maypole dancing followed. Headteacher Antonia Dufek said: “Everyone worked really hard to make a great show for the families. “We’d spent the day making flags and crowns and learning about the Queen’s 70 years on the throne. “Luckily, we had great weather meaning we could have a ‘street party’ lunch.” St John’s is part of Wimborne Academy Trust and its chief executive Liz West said: “What a wonderful day. Hopefully the children will always remember the Platinum Jubilee and how they marked it at their first school.” Continued on page 12

Platinum Jubilee Celebrations Round-up

Of criers, crafts and coronets... n Adorned with bunting and to a full house, the Barrington Centre, Ferndown, celebrated regally, hosting a free tea party for seniors who were entertained by Ferndown Strummers and Poole and Parkstone productions. Ferndown town crier, Mike Andrews announced the Jubilee Beacon being lit at 9.45pm that evening and the town’s celebrations continued from then.

n The Mayor of Wimborne Minster, Councillor Carol Butter, opened the Big Jubilee Lunch on the Sunday. Lots of people brought their own picnics to join in the celebration and the main road was full. Seating was set up in the town centre and many also got together on the green outside the Minster to enjoy a memorable day that also included entertainment in the Allendale on-stage in the Square.

n Participants enjoyed the Sturminster Village Platinum Jubilee Trail, which was announced by the Wimborne Town Crier. n A special-branded Jubilee bus entered service and travelled across the conurbation. Bournemouth Coastal BID and Yellow Buses joined forces to create the eyecatching double-decker, decorated with

Paul Clarke, Coastal BID chairman, said: “Our Jubilee bus looks superb and we’d like to thank Global Brand Communications for the artwork and Yellow Buses for making it happen. “Our partnership with Yellow Buses will be ongoing; our joint aim is to get more people visiting our areas by bus.” David Squire, Yellow Buses MD, said: “This is the latest of our branded buses and passengers love them. “We’ve been celebrating big national occasions for more than a century and this week’s Platinum Jubilee was one of the biggest.” n Town crier at the Jubilee Trail opening and, below right, Stur citizens line up for their Jubilee mugs

Oh, we do like a blue beside our seaside!

n Friar’s Cliff Beach steps

CLEAN SCENE: From left, Avon Beach, Highcliffe Beach, Friar’s Cliff Beach huts

Words and pictures by Lorraine Gibson Three of our nearest beaches, Avon Beach, Highcliffe and Friars Cliff have more than the Jubilee to celebrate after they achieved Blue Flags for the first time. In fact our Christchurch, Poole and Bournemouth beaches all (sand)bagged environmental awards from the Keep Britain Tidy charity - ironic, considering those bleak media images of Dorset’s litter-strewn beaches in the aftermath of the crowds that flocked to the coast between Covid Lockdowns. While the Blue Flag (and Seaside Awards) recognise great beaches - of which we’re blessed with many

- they also highlight how crucial the clearing-up efforts of council staff, conservationists, locals and volunteers are. It was they who restored our sands to golden from grotty and our promenades from trashed to postcard-perfect. Along the coast, Sandbanks is also in jubilant mood, being one of only two beaches in the country to have scooped a Blue Flag award every year for 35 years, making it one of the world’s best beaches. In total, BCP beaches won 26 awards and 12 Blue Flags - more than any other authority. So what makes a beach worthy of the iconic international ensign?

It’s not just the quality of the beach, it’s how it’s managed, the facilities on offer and, increasingly, the standard of its environmental education programmes. The BCP area’s other Blue Flag beaches are Alum Chine, Branksome Chine, Canford Cliffs, Durley Chine, Fisherman’s Walk, Shore Road, Southbourne and Manor Steps. Councillor Mohan Iyengar, portfolio holder for tourism, leisure and culture, said: “We’re so proud of the number of awards we’ve received. The team works incredibly hard to care for our beaches and there has been a phenomenal amount of work done behind the scenes.

“We consider ourselves lucky to be the guardians of such a breathtaking stretch of coastline and it’s great to know that Keep Britain Tidy have given us their stamp of approval.” Keep Britain Tidy’s chief executive, Allison OgdenNewton OBE, said: “The success of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole beaches in reaching the high standards demanded is testament to all those who have worked so hard – from beach managers and volunteers to local residents and local businesses. “The huge commitment that is needed to maintain marvellous beaches worthy of these awards cannot be underestimated.”

New Stour & Avon, June 17, 2022 19

stouravonmagazine.co.uk We asked Highcliffe, Avon and Friar’s Cliff residents why they love their beaches. Katy Stephenson likens the shoreline to one of the best in the world, and says: “Getting to run along them most days, I’ve been in Australia 12 years and I often compare these stunning beaches to some of New South Wales. More blue skies and sunshine than NSW in the summer.” For Val Evans it’s: “Sunsets, beach huts, paddle-boarding, beach cafes, community feel and lobster pots!” “Love Highcliffe,” says Linda Avril Hazell, as does Caroline Don who inscribed her agreement in the sand, pictured right! For many, it’s about how well-preserved they are. Karen Heard Horsefield says: “Uncommercialised and generally unspoilt... so fortunate to have three Blue Flag beaches so close to each other on our doorstep”. Sue Cassidy adds: “The fact that, particularly off-season,

And what do you think..? they are quiet and unspoiled - and I’d prefer them to stay that way!” Pam Shipway feels the same: “Truly a stunning place to live, we’ve been down here nearly 30 years. Praying that even though we have been discovered it isn’t spoiled by building more beach huts etc. It’s charm is in its naturalness. There are not many places left like it.” David Thirkill says: “It’s refreshingly unspoilt. Highcliffe mainly. The Castle through to Steamer Point is a favourite.” Rachel Parker Silva simply cites its “Rustic charm” and, according to Helen Faithfull, it’s the “Idyllic lifestyle, without the hustle and bustle of Bournemouth beaches.” For others, like Loz Rita Waters it’s about their fourlegged friends: “It’s dog friendly all year round.” Greg Jones concurs: “Highcliffe is an amazing

place, our little dog loves it down there. As do we!” Some just felt fortunate to live here. Lesley Fallows New says: “I moved down from Manchester last October and I have to pinch myself about the beauty; also the smell of the sea brings back childhood memories.” Margaret Hudson: “Every trip to one of our stunning beaches is special and better than the last. Always something different to see. So lucky to live here.” Ian Searle rates Friar’s Cliff. “Cycled down to the beach this morning and it felt like being on the Med.” Lyn Thacker sums them up: “Azure skies and golden beaches, sparkling turquoise sea with waves rhythmically embracing, de-stressing the mind with sea salty breezes, coconut-scented, dazzling yellow gorses specially for the walkers...” Graham Homer, however,

has a suggestion. “Love the area but wouldn’t a boardwalk from the zig-zag to Friars Cliff to Avon beach be a great addition?” Sue Cassidy agrees. “Yes, that would be wonderful! I find that stretch of sand difficult on my beach walks. I’m ok going from the zig-zag to Friars Cliff but coming back it’s soft sand and slightly uphill, an absolute killer for my back and legs!” But not everyone’s smitten. “Great until it rains and the sewage outflow opens,” says Derek Love, to which Margaret Green adds: “I live in Highcliffe and during the break in lockdown the beach was crowded with only one toilet open. I’m pretty sure raw sewage is a problem. Plus there is a need for better toilet facilities at the Crow’s Nest.”

Stan’s the man to celebrate century

Celebrations have been in full swing at Kings Park Care Home in Ferndown as one of its residents reaches his centenary in style. Stanley Chapman was joined by staff, relatives, friends and other residents as he received a birthday card from the Queen in recognition of his landmark birthday. A Champagne reception was held at the home and guests enjoyed a special birthday cake made by the home’s chef Wyn Williams. When asked what his secret was, Stan replied: “Moderation in all things!” The following day, Stan enjoyed a large family party of more than 40 guests, many of whom had travelled from different countries. His great-granddaughter made a three-tier cake for the celebrations and Stan was presented with a filled photo album of his one hundred years, together with a book containing the front pages of The Telegraph for each year of his life. Lucy Lester, home services adviser at

Kings Park, added: “We’re delighted to be celebrating a truly remarkable man as he reaches this amazing milestone. “Stan is such a popular resident who

always has an interesting tale to tell, and we look forward to hearing many more as he breaks into his next century.”

Political round-up

Opinions expressed do not necessarily reflect those of the publisher

Celebrations will be cherished for ever As the deadline for copy for this article is after the announcement that there is to be a vote of confidence in the Prime Minister but before the outcome of that vote is known, I can only express my disappointment that, after the unalloyed joy of the Jubilee, some of my Parliamentary colleagues have been behaving like headless chickens. While the splendid Platinum Jubilee celebrations may be over, the memories will be cherished for ever. It was a privilege to be able to attend so many local events including the beacon lighting in Mudeford and church services of thanksgiving in Christchurch Priory , Sherborne Abbey and St Mary’s Parish Church, West Moors. The Queen’s selfless public service and role as Defender of the Faith were highlighted in Bible readings and

Christchurch & East Dorset CHRIS CHOPE MP sermons. Her Majesty’s individual character was reflected in the choice of music, hymns and anthems. Community fellowship was to the fore during the refreshments which followed each service. My prize for the best beacon goes to Christchurch Town Council. The purpose-built beacon was a gift from ReidSteel, Christchurch’s largest private sector employer, and provided

a wonderful focal point for the thousands who gathered at Mudeford Quay. My prize for the best Jubilee cake goes to West Moors. Pictures of both of these are available on my website, www.chrischope. com. n Prior to the Jubilee I was privileged to be able to lead a group of MPs from the British American Parliamentary Group to California. It was a specialist visit to examine progress in the development and deployment of electric and autonomous vehicles. The highlight was travelling in a Waymo autonomous car on the streets of San Francisco. We witnessed the vehicle’s incredible sensitivity to a wide range of spontaneous traffic hazards. The UK has a great opportunity to embrace this technology and become its market leader. Driverless vehicles are the future and have the potential

to transform the travel options for those who, through age or infirmity, are unable to access traditional vehicles. We visited the Uber HQ to hear about the huge market for the private hire of autonomous vehicles. It is already possible to hire these in Phoenix, Arizona. What a contrast with Dorset where Uber is not even licensed for traditional vehicles! We also visited ChargePoint, the largest provider of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs). Widening access to charge points is essential to overcome ‘range anxiety’ and build confidence in EVs. California has so much to teach us about enabling innovative entrepreneurs to develop their ideas and access start-up capital. Wouldn’t it be great if Dorset could develop such an incubator along the lines of the one we saw in Los Angeles?

Our glorious country (outside of Westminster) Wasn’t the Jubilee weekend fantastic? I was lucky to have all four days off, yet I know many were not as fortunate. So thanks to all those who manned the fetes, events or just did their regular jobs so that others might enjoy. Seeing the flags and festivities prompted me to think about patriotism and identity in 2022. For many, particularly those on the left politically, patriotism, or love of country, has become uncomfortable. The left has lost many political and social battles since the Diamond Jubilee to causes and parties more overtly nationalist, both in policy and symbolism. These losses have caused

some to rebound against the flag and our national institutions. I would encourage them to think of what we saw at the jubilee, and think again. It brought so many people together. The myriad street parties broke the ice between longtime neighbours. The raucous event at Mampitts gets a special mention. A brilliant event. Well done to all the organisers. What I saw there and in the county at large was what I could only describe as progress. I sensed a moving on, a moving past the polarising arguments of the last 10 years. Out there, outside of

Dorset Labour GREG WILLIAMS Westminster, is an England, a Britain, not worn down or held back by dividing lines and culture clashes. It’s a Britain that loves if you’re part of it and embraces you when you’re not. It’s a country that doesn’t

accept things will get worse and worse, but strives for something better. It’s a nation that looks past the past, and to a more optimistic future. It’s also easy for the country to unite around a head of state that embodies the virtues the country reveres. Restraint. Service. Others above self. The contrast with the head of her government couldn’t be more marked. Terrible, rule breaking, narcissistic prime ministers are not a reason to have a monarchy, republicans would argue. But, my, aren’t we glad that Johnson isn’t our president.

Country crazy for coffee cups Verwood Afternoon Townswomen’s Guild received an enlightening talk from Anita Rigler of Verwoodians on Waste on how everyone can do their bit to help the planet, writes Linda Pearson. Considering some products can take up to 1000 years to degrade in landfill, it is important we recycle as much as possible. Did you know that the

United Kingdom uses seven million disposable coffee cups every day? So many products can be recycled nowadays that there’s really no excuse not to do so! Next on the Guild’s programme is a trip to the Hub cinema, an Afternoon Tea, followed by a coach trip to London in July. For more Guild information telephone Judi on 07787 386153.

FANTASTIQUE: Richard Bromell of Charterhouse Auctioneers and Valuers with the French 1929 San-Sou-Pap £15,000-£17,000

C’est très chic! A French classic

In the Charterhouse June 29 specialist auction of classic and vintage motorcycles is a rare 1920s French San-SouPap motorcycle. “We have been asked to auction a vast variety of classic and vintage motorbikes in the auction,” said Richard Bromell. “There are British, American, German, Italian and Japanese bikes but this chic French San-Sou-Pap ticks all the boxes for me.” San-Sou-Pap motorcycles were made in France from 1923 to 1936. Originally, the company made only two-strokes – San-Sou-Pap means ‘without valves’. The 1929 San-Sou-Pap at Charterhouse is believed to be a unique bike and is fitted with a Swiss made 500cc MAG four-stroke engine. It was bought by the owner in 2012. He undertook a fastidious nut and bolt restoration over the

next two years but has not ridden it after finishing the restoration. Entered into the Charterhouse auction, being held at the Haynes International Motor Museum at Sparkford on Wednesday June 29, it is estimated at £15,000-17,000. Viewing is on Tuesday 28th or you can see all the lots and bid live on charterhouseauction.com Richard Bromell and the team at Charterhouse can be contacted for advice and valuations on motorcycles at The Long Street Salerooms, Sherborne 01935 812277 bikes@charterhouse-auction. com or via charterhouseauction.com. ‘Dragons’ invest £13k by Faith Eckersall An NHS Dragon’s Den-style competition to find innovative ways to help Dorset people with mental health and other issues has handed out £13,000 to the winning projects. An initiative to tackle crippling social isolation among older residents and support for people with memory problems won the two biggest slices of competition money. Funding also goes to projects addressing young people’s sleep issues, an online singing group for patients with communication difficulties and to trial a new treatment for knee arthritis. More than 1,300 people voted for their favourite, whittling down a shortlist of proposals to five, before staff pitched to a panel of ‘dragons’ to secure an investment. Combat Social Isolation Of

Health & Wellbeing The problem is not always where the pain is! Often, clients come to see me for a massage treatment and point to an area and say ‘the pain is here, this is where the problem is.’ In fact, it’s rarely the cause of the problem, it just happens to be where the issue is manifesting itself. When you come for a treatment, it’s important to carry out a thorough consultation and for you to tell me where all the aches and pains are, no matter how long that may take! We also go through a range of motion assessment. This is where I’ll ask you to perform certain movements and assess how much movement you have in that area and whether there is any pain or discomfort in doing so. As well as the specific area where you feel the pain, I will always investigate other areas, joints, muscles and trigger points around the pain point to get to the root cause of the problem.

Where does it hurt?

Treating the symptoms will work to a degree but we really need to work on finding and treating the cause to prevent the pain from persisting. For example, in the picture of a pain pattern, the red areas show common head and neck pain which is

actually coming from trigger points in the trapezius muscle – a muscle that starts at the base of your neck, goes across your shoulders and extends to the middle of your back. This is a typical pain pattern and trigger point I see regularly, especially with my clients who suffer headaches and migraines. After your treatment you’ll be given some homecare which is an important part of the journey to decreasing or irradicating pain. Your homecare can be as simple as applying heat or cold at home, mobilisation exercises or some stretches. It could even be booking yourself a workstation assessment or changing the position of your car seat or the way you carry your handbag. All of these important elements are discussed and taken into account during your consultation. You will never be handed an exercise

You will receive an individual treatment plan to address your presenting pain condition and a tailored after-care plan to put you in the driving seat of your recovery. Find your purpose for a better life Do you catch yourself thinking: “Is this it? Is this what I’m here for?” And deep down, have a knowing sense inside that you could be so much more? I had those thoughts and I had that feeling. The biggest problem for me was that I didn’t know what I wanted to do, so how could I possibly achieve, be, or do more, if I didn’t know? I was envious of those that knew exactly what they wanted to do when they left school. Me? I just padded along, working my way up a career ladder, in an arena that was admittedly interesting, but there was always a feeling that something was missing. I didn’t have a purpose. Having a purpose can create meaning, a sense of

direction, guide life decisions, influence behaviours, shape goals and be a reason to get up in the morning. It can help us to live life with integrity, to know who, what and why we are, and become easier to live a life that’s true to our values. If you are without purpose, try asking yourself: What lights me up? What puts fire in my belly? What do I love doing? What am I good at? What are my passions? Who do I love being around? Who do I admire? What inspires me? What tugs my interest? Where am I most attentive? What would make me wake up in the morning and want to go to work? Be open minded. Don’t block your answers, however crazy they seem. Read, explore,

research, talk to people, ask questions, do things, try stuff. Over time you will get clarity in what you do and don’t like. It’s all too easy for us to lose ourselves in the familiar, the routine, the comfort zone. We distract ourselves with other things, telling ourselves that we’ll think about it another day when we’ve got more time. We block ourselves with a lack of confidence and self-doubt. We live in our mind because society has conditioned us to be that way, telling us what we must, should and ought to be doing. Listen to your heart, your intuition, that voice inside you that tells you that you can do so much more. What is it telling you? What is stopping you?

n Victoria Arnold is a life coach from Wimborne Victoriaarnold.co.uk If I removed all obstacles (time, money etc) and gave you all the resources you needed, and you could do exactly what you wanted, what would it be? And as a 90-year-old, having lived the best life, what do you want to look back at your life and be able to say about it? “When your life is on course with its purpose, you are your most powerful.” Oprah Winfrey. How powerful are you?

Health & Wellbeing Connection is vital to us as human beings, and yet there can be so many blocks to our ability to connect or form new and healthy relationships. These can range from painful past experiences with loved ones, to arguments with friends or bad feelings with work colleagues, all of which have an impact on our confidence and self-worth. Whether we realise it consciously or not, we all have experiences that we can let go of, which will allow us to move forward and freely connect with those around us. Social connection strengthens our immune system, helping us recover faster from anxiety, depression or disease, and may even lengthen our life. People who feel more connected have higher selfesteem and are more trusting and co-operative - so as a consequence, others are more

Get connected with yourself

By Susie Carver, consulting hypnotherapist with Sea Change Hypnotherapy in Wimborne seachangehypno.com open to trusting and cooperating with them. Social connectedness therefore generates a positive feedback loop of social, emotional and physical wellbeing. When I run group hypnosis

sessions I always begin with an exercise that allows the participants to feel more connected with each other. It often involves a selfsoothing technique known as Havening, and you can learn how to do it very easily. Start by taking a nice deep breath in and allow yourself to smile! As you do so, fold your arms across yourself so your hands rest lightly on your shoulders. Begin to make downward strokes on your upper arms - you may find that closing your eyes as you do this provides a deeper experience. Continue breathing and smiling and stroking for a few minutes, and notice what happens. After a while you may notice a calmness spreading over you, or hear yourself

sigh as you activate your parasympathetic nervous system, de-coding your inner stress. Havening is a great way to soothe frazzled nerves and restore balance to a stressed mind. You can also rub your palms across each others, from fingertips to wrist, and sway from side to side as you do so, or stroke your face from top to bottom with your palms - it all has the same effect The power of touch can instantly help us form a deeper connection with ourselves, which in turn helps us connect better with others. And in this world full of people, what could be more beautiful than knowing how to form healthy relationships and establish deeper connections with those around us?

For those who ask what I do... When people want to improve their health and fitness, it’s my role to guide and support them. Here’s a sneak look at my week. Monday after dropping my kids for school, I meet my run group for a short 3-4 mile circuit; a great way to start the week. I’m then seeing private clients for personal training sessions. People come to me with different goals, but it’s often around things like recovering from an illness, an injury or the aftermath of having had a medical diagnosis. I take a few hours off in the afternoon to walk my dog, Scoobs, pick up the kids, prepare supper before heading off for an evening session at WOW. Although we’re a ladies’ club, the guys want to get in on the fun too, so we run three men’s strength sessions

a week. Then there’s two ladies sessions which I currently run as circuits or small group training. Tuesday I always have a spare bag of clothes in the boot of my car as I’m outdoors a lot and get wet! A Tuesday highlight is my parent and baby class, Buggybeat. I started this so parents could exercise without worrying about childcare. It’s great for everyone to have some fresh air and we go for coffee afterwards. I’m then back to WOW, have a catch up with my colleagues and see private clients back to back until it’s school pick up time. Wednesday I do my own long run with my training partner and spend the rest of the day checking in with clients, reviewing food diaries, writing exercise programs. Personal training

is a people business and I’m in touch with clients throughout the week, outside their exercise sessions. Thursday one of my busiest days, I see private clients all morning and take a few hours off in the afternoon again as I’m on duty at WOW in the evenings. My biggest challenge is managing my own energy levels, I need to be suitably ‘stoked’ for delivering group classes, then completely focused on individual clients during their sessions while keeping energy for my own training. Friday After taking my run group out first thing, I’m back at the Club for double shift, taking classes, including our signature step class and seeing members who want some personalised support. It’s often diet related, exercise adaptations or concerns over something

You don’t need a jubilee to enjoy a feast! by Lorraine Gibson Even though the celebrations are over, you can’t beat a classic and these recipe ideas will certainly add a touch of pageantry to any feast.

Recipes & images: TESCO REAL FOOD

Eton Mess Cake Crown your party with this cake fit for a Queen. Inspired by Eton mess, this layered sponge cake is crammed with strawberries and raspberries and decorated with whipped cream and crunchy meringue. A zesty lime syrup and fragrant mint cut through the richness, ensuring a regal summer showstopper. Ingredients For the sponge 280g unsalted soft butter 280g (9 3/4oz) golden caster sugar 5 medium eggs 1 orange, zested and juiced 280g (9 3/4oz) self-raising flour 1 tsp baking powder 1 tbsp milk For the syrup 3 limes, 1 zested and 3 juiced 1 orange, juiced 85g (3oz) caster sugar For the filling 500g (17 1/2oz) strawberries, hulled and quartered 2 tsp chopped fresh mint, plus some torn leaves for decoration ½ lime, juiced 5 tbsp icing sugar 500ml (17 1/2fl oz) whipping cream 300g (10 1/2oz) raspberries 1 x tub 16 plain mini meringues, 6 kept whole and the rest broken into pieces Method For the sponge, preheat the oven to gas 4,180°C, fan 160°C. Grease and line the bases of 3 x 20cm sandwich tins with baking paper. In a large bowl, whisk the butter and sugar together for 5 minutes until pale and fluffy. Gradually add the eggs, whisking well between each addition, then add the orange zest. In a separate bowl, mix the flour and baking powder together, then sift over the wet mixture and fold through. Finally, fold through 2 tbsp orange juice and the milk. Divide the mixture evenly between the 3 tins, levelling the tops. Place in the oven for 20-25 minutes, until golden and springy, and a skewer inserted into the

centres comes away clean. Meanwhile make the syrup. In a small pan, gently heat 3 tbsp lime juice, the zest of 1 lime, 3 tbsp orange juice and the sugar, until the sugar has dissolved. Bubble for 5 minutes. Prick the tops of the cakes all over with a skewer and brush over the warm syrup, then leave to cool. Macerate the strawberries by placing them in a bowl with the chopped mint, lime juice and 2 tbsp icing sugar. Stir, then set aside for 15-30 minutes. Drain the juice and reserve for drizzling. For the filling, whip the cream with the remaining 3 tbsp icing sugar to soft peaks. Spoon about a third of the

mixture into another bowl and set aside (for the topping). Fold three-quarters of the macerated strawberries, most of the raspberries and the broken meringues through the whipped cream. Place one sponge on your serving plate and spoon half the filling over the top. Sandwich with a second sponge, then repeat with the remaining filling and sponge. Decorate the top with the reserved whipped cream, the remaining strawberries and raspberries, the whole meringues and the torn mint leaves. Drizzle with the reserved strawberry juice and serve. Buck’s Fizz There’s no better way to toast a celebration than with a glass of bubbly Buck’s Fizz. This classic cocktail uses freshly-squeezed orange juice for deeply fruity flavour, topped up with decadent champagne. If short on time - or cash use normal orange juice and cava as an alternative to the Champagne With a vegetable peeler, peel thin strips of zest from an orange. Set aside until ready to serve. Squeeze the juice from all 4 oranges and use 400ml. Alternatively, use the same amount of ready-made orange juice. Divide the juice between 8 champagne flutes, then slowly top up with the chilled bubbly. Twist the reserved strips of peel into curls and use to garnish. Tip: Freezing the orange zest curls can help them keep their shape, especially if preparing ahead.

The importance of labelling imported food Barbara Cossins is the owner and founder of Love Local Trust Local For the fourth time since Brexit, the Government has delayed the implementation of much-needed checks on imported foreign food arriving in Britain. Frightened of food shortages because of droughts in India and the US, and the ongoing war in Ukraine, they’ve yet again failed in their support of the British farmer and allowed unregulated food to flood into the UK. The risk to animal health, combined with the threat to the nation’s bio security from the import of cheap food that is not being checked or vetted, is a very real one and is being completely ignored by our MPs. The Government’s decision is

putting the UK public at risk and British farmers at an unfair disadvantage. On the reverse side, British farmers have been made to submit endless forms, checks, statistics, tagging and heritage of everything that is exported outside of the UK since the very start of Brexit, in January 2020. Out of touch with the real world, our government is instead spending taxpayers’ money on asking our farmers to re-wild and grow trees on their land, rather than producing food for their communities. They are making these ill-advised decisions despite the fact that the

majority of MPs have never even visited a farm. Now more than ever the British public need to support their farmers. Consumers need safe, healthy, wonderful food, and farmers need their business and understanding of how British food is produced. Our Love Local Trust Local food label backs Dorset farmers for exactly this reason and has been campaigning for months to be heard. This unchecked flooding of foreign, unsafe food imports shows just how important food labelling is, if we are to understand what we are feeding our families and friends.

Cooking... Oatcakes When I moved in with Martin, he already had two delightful, grown-up children. We went on a family road trip to Shropshire, via Blists Hill, which is a museum that attempts to recreate the sights, sounds and smells of a Victorian Shropshire town in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I knew I was finally accepted into the family when they went on the carousel and his daughter said: ‘you can be Mum and hold the coats and bags!’ It made me so happy. The other reason for our trip was because Martin loves Staffordshire oakcakes! The Staffordshire oatcake dates back to the 19th century where it was baked on a hotplate over an open fire, He loves them and we went into a supermarket and cleared the shelf, much to the

with Martha Legg layer of the batter. Fry the oatcake for 1–2 minutes, or until golden-brown on one side. Flip the oatcake and fry for a further minute, or until golden-brown on both sides. Set the oatcake aside, cover with a sheet of greaseproof paper. Repeat with the remaining batter mixture, to make about 12 oatcakes. Stack them on top of each other, separated by greaseproof paper, and keep warm.

amusement of the locals. And now we have found the recipe, he can make them himself! Ingredients 225g fine oatmeal 100g wholemeal flour 100g plain flour 1 tsp quick-action yeast pinch salt 1 tbsp baking powder 4 tbsp vegetable oil 1 tbsp olive oil Method Mix together all the flour, yeast and salt in a bowl until well combined. Make a well in the centre of the mixture, then gradually add 1 pint water in a thin stream, stirring well with a wooden spoon, until the batter is well combined and the consistency of thick double cream. (NB: You may not need to use all of the water.)

Cover the batter with a damp, clean tea towel and set aside for 3–4 hours (or up to 8 hours in a cool place). Once ready to cook the batter, whisk in the baking powder until well combined. Heat a teaspoon of vegetable oil in a frying pan over a medium heat. When hot, add a ladleful of the batter mixture and swirl the pan to coat the bottom of it in a thin

Filling: Cook some rashers of bacon. Heat the grill, place the pancakes on a baking tray. Put the bacon on and then springle with cheese. Heat until cheese has melted. Take out from under the grill and then fold the pancake so that the filling is in the middle. It works well with ham instead of bacon. You could also serve them with Jam!

Looking forward to looking back with roses As we move towards the longest day of the year the roses are centre stage. But nature’s confetti doesn’t last very long in these winds! I am going to make some rose petal elixir. The name conjures up thoughts of high summer and high magic. A heady cocktail! All you do is “gather ye rose ‘petals’ while you may”. A quick dunk in some slightly salty water and a gentle rinse. Then into a pan with honey and brandy to suit your taste. Leave to stew with an occasional stir and sieve after two days. Then decant into sterilised jars or bottles. Cooking with brandy doesn’t sit with me very well in June, it seems such an old and heavy ingredient quite incongruent with the season. However, I am told when it is ready in say three or four months and you open the lid and pour out a mixture it’s like a spoonful of summer! It is also said to be good for your heart – the physical one and the emotional one When you look closely you see many of the petals are indeed heart shaped! I have taken a few photos of the roses which I will use as part of the label to remind me of the warm light of Summer when the dark of winter creeps in. You can make this recipe with many other edible flowers such as elderflower or meadowsweet. Indulge your passion for flower power fashion Any fashionista knows that green is a perfect base colour since all shades of the spectrum work so well with it. The best example of this can be found in the world of plants. Flower stems are generally green and just think of the array of colours that they support so beautifully. No surprise then, that flowers - like fashion - have seasonal trends and this summer there’s a whole catwalk of tones on parade. For what’s hot and what’s not in the world of blooms, talk to Phil Brown and the team at Longham’s Flower Factory. Phil’s been in the flower business for 40 years and says large, blousy blooms are still stealing the show. “Think big flowers - dahlias, peonies and salvias,” he says. “They give loads of

ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE

colour and are really low maintenance.” This is Phil’s favourite season. “It’s what we work towards all year. It’s the best time for plants, they’re full of colours and the scents are amazing.” But which colours? Think pinks, but bold, even neon, fiery reds and oranges and Jubilee-friendly purples. Display and plant them how

you like, a swathe of single colour or a riot of rainbow hues. Flower Factory supplies both businesses and the public and has a loyal band of customers, not just because of the plant choices but, according to Phil, because of the fun and banter that happens in the shop. “We like to have fun,” he says.

“We want people to leave happy and laughter costs nothing, does it?” Through Covid lockdowns, they developed a wholesale branch to supply local florists who were working from home and from borders to bouquets, wallflowers to weddings, business is certainly blooming. Is green the colour?

Q. What’s the best colour for artificial grass? A. Interesting….well someone has heard my impassioned dislike of artificial grass! Honestly, the more expensive you go, the thicker pile and greater colour variation and grass likeness you get, stands to reason, but it is still an environmental nightmare. It has its place in limited circumstances, but don’t be fooled into thinking its maintenance free either, far from it. The RHS banned the use and sale of artificial grass at the recent Chelsea

Flower Show at the end of May, and I’m sure the other shows will shortly follow. Q. Best fruit and veg to grow in containers? A. I always suggest growing what you really like and what is expensive in the shops relative to the expense of growing. Tomatoes are a classic for a good reason. Whilst reasonably cheap in the shops, the taste and quality of a home grown tomato far exceeds any you can get from a shop (bar perhaps the most expensive in the middle of the English tomato season), they are reasonably easy and fun to grow Plus Sheds, Attics, Garages & Gardens GARDEN Quality Items Offset MAINTENANCE Registered Waste Carrier Hedge and Tel: 01202 001614 Tree Cutting or 07853 275379 Patio Cleaning enquiries@back2market.com Fencing

Horticulturist and garden designer/ consultant Hannah Hobbs-Chell is the gardener at High Mead Farm, looking after four acres of gardens and landscape. If you have a question for her, email:hannah.hobbschell@outlook.com including a picture if relevant too. Herbs are always nice, as they have multiple benefits, from wildlife friendliness, sensory and wellbeing qualities when in the garden, and superb flavour for cooking. Soft fruits are fun and tasty, and expensive in the shops! A blueberry under planted with some strawberries for instance can work well and provide lovely ingredients for an Eton mess or pavlova. Personally, I don’t bother with potatoes, as they are super cheap in shops and a lot of effort for the reward, however children love to grow them, and they are a lovely easy introduction so do have their place in the grow your own movement. I don’t feel I’ve directly given you an answer, but hopefully I have given you an idea of where to go?!

Memoir of Dorset schooldays boosts school in Uganda by Lorraine Gibson The launch of a book about life in a Wimborne village school has secured essential funding for a school for orphans in Africa. Author Jill Mumford, former head of Hampreston near Wimborne, says that the book-signing event, highlighted in our last issue, raised £1,200 (and counting). “Thank you so much for writing about our book launch,” she says. “Several people mentioned that they’d found out about it in the magazine. “It was a beautiful day and so many former pupils and their families came along. “It was wonderful to see them again and hear about their lives now. Some brought their own children along which was exciting, but certainly marked the passing of years!” Jill, whose memoir is called Those Were The Days, adds: “I signed books and was told the queue at one point involved a two-hour wait. It just shows how dedicated Hampreston people are. I would like to thank everyone who made the day such a success.” Copies were distributed free, with recipients asked to donate to the Emily Collins School in Uganda, a project supporting abandoned children and named after one of Jill’s former pupils who died aged 26.

SELFLESS: Emily Collins with a Ugandan girl and, above, the eponymous school. Inset, Emily and a Ugandan baby. Below, Picture: STEPHEN COLLINS Jill Mumford at her book signing

Despite being diagnosed with bone cancer at 16 and undergoing gruelling treatment which severely damaged her heart, Emily defied medical advice and travelled to Uganda to do volunteer work that would help improve the lives of abandoned street children. The experience profoundly affected her so she returned the following year with the same friends, alongside social worker Martin Duhimbaze, who then founded Our Father’s House Ministries, (OFHM), an organisation on a mission to get unprotected children off the streets and to educate them for a more secure future.

Emily stayed in contact with them and helped Martin to recruit friends in the UK to provide sponsorship for the children to attend school. More than 140 children are now sponsored. She succeeded, but sadly died in 2017. As a lasting testimony to her selflessness, OFHM has named the school after her and so her legacy - and the fundraising - live on through family and friends. Jill says: “Emily’s father was there to explain the charity and show slides of the work being done.” On his website, her dad Stephen Collins says: “Martin humbly says that our daughter was instrumental in encouraging him to follow his dreams to reach out to the children and youth of Uganda, to set up OFHM and to see his vision for a child ministry centre realised. “He and his team therefore asked if they might name the centre the Emily Collins School. “Emily would have been delighted about the kindergarten, infirmary and community hall, but she would have argued vehemently against it being named after her! “However, we see it as an honour and a lovely tribute to Emily’s love and compassion.” stephencollinsphotography.co.uk/whyofhm/.

Creative way of environment learning by Tony Horitz Between March and April this year, children at Rushcombe First School, Corfe Mullen, aged between four and nine, have been learning about the environment in an innovative and creative way that has led to a wealth of high quality learning across the curriculum, as well as developing their commitment and enthusiasm for caring for the environment. Gavin White, deputy headteacher at Rushcombe, invited Tony Horitz, artistic director of Colehill-based State of Play Arts, to collaborate with the school developing a curriculum project based on a new version of the classic picture book The Lorax by Dr, Seuss. Written 50 years ago, but still very topical, the story tells of a fictional land called Gricklegrass, where creatures known as Barbaloots, Hummingfish and Swomme Swans live happily, protected by a hobbit-like spirit of the trees, called the Lorax. Tony brought in a team of three actors to begin the creative process with a short

performance in the school hall. Working in role as Ecological Experts (‘Wildlife Warriors’), the children were tasked with finding out what happened to the Lorax and working on ways to make Gricklegrass better. As part of the project, the teachers and children utilised a teaching and learning approach called Mantle of the Expert (MoE). In MoE, children work with their teacher in a very different relationship to the conventional model of education, co-constructing the learning experience with their teachers and peers, and solving either real or fictional problems by working in role for an extended time – the Learning

Adventure based on the Lorax lasted five weeks – incorporating all key aspects of the curriculum. This approach, combined with three theatrical inputs during the project by State of Play Arts, made for a rich and stimulating learning experience and a buzz all around the school. The children’s work included researching a range of environmental issues at their age level, including making maps, 3D models and composing pieces of music to express their feelings and ideas about the theme. They also wrote poems, diaries and letters of persuasion. Children and staff were extremely positive about the Learning Adventure, which culminated in each class

planting a tree in the school grounds, and every child planting a flowering plant. One Year 3 child said: “The environment is important because it keeps us alive. “Trees help us breathe - they suck in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen. So please plant more trees!” Another child commented on the value of the use of the mantle of the expert approach: “It teaches us to be inclusive because in the story everyone gets a say”. There was evidence that the children incorporated their learning into their real lives, including inspiring littericking outings with families and the children engaging in gardening activities. The project represented how children are a beacon of hope for the future of the natural world. If you have a child who is of school starting age, and would like to find out more about Rushcombe First School, please contact the school office on office@ rushcombe.dorset.sch.uk or 01202 695722. You can also visit the school’s website at rushcombe.co.uk.

SECRET STORIES: The bunker at Talbot Heath and the Tregonwell and Creeke statue. Below, the Regent Cinema in Christchurch

Discover the hidden Dorset places that are miles from the mainstream by Lorraine Gibson Discovering places with hidden stories is great fun but when they are in areas you think you know well, it can be truly eye-opening. Those in the know who love unearthing hidden details in towns and cities tend to consult their trusty ‘111 Places’ guide books and this new, sunshiny-yellow addition to the series, 111 Places In Bournemouth You Shouldn’t Miss, is no exception. Written by local author, Katherine Bebo, who has gone to great lengths to unearth the quirks and curiosities of her beloved Bournemouth, Christchurch, Ringwood and surrounding areas, it’s a great little guide for residents and visitors alike. The book is illustrated by local photographer Oliver Smith. While it features stuff we locals know well, like Christchurch Priory’s Miraculous Beam, the Ducking Stool, the Coven of Witches and the Highcliffe Beach ammonites, there are

also plenty of less-explored pockets of the region viewed through the eyes of an already enamoured local. Join Katherine as she entertains you with insights, cultural anecdotes and insider tips, all snappily written as fun and informative ‘storylets’, with useful tips and clear directions. Take Rolls Drive in Southbourne. That it happens to be the only Rolls Drive in the UK - possibly the world - is unusual enough; discovering that it honours Charles Royce, co-founder of the Rolls Royce empire, makes it more intriguing and the ripping yarn that tells us why is fascinating.

A curious epitaph on a tomb in Christchurch Priory, dated 1641, is also engaging since it’s kept people baffled as to who is buried there for years. The theories that do exist are food for thought. Add where to swim with a whale, Batman’s old stomping ground, the clifftop hotel that changed history, the woods where a Hollywood blockbuster was filmed and Napoleon’s wine cooler and you’ve got a dedicated area guide that’s enormous fun. Katherine has also written

Cyber security star Lucy inspired by TV shows An up-and-coming cyber security expert has told how she was inspired to enter the sector after watching The Real Hustle and Catfish on TV. Lucy Dalley, right, who works for C3IA Solutions in Poole, recently spoke at a Secure South West event in Plymouth. She addressed those attending in person and online with a talk focusing on how she transitioned from education to industry and the challenges faced as a woman in cyber. She spoke alongside Laura Wellstead who heads Women in Cybersecurity, which exists to get more women involved in what is a very maledominated area. Lucy said: “Not only is the sector short of qualified personnel, but it is really interesting and there is much more to it than coding and high-tech computing. “For example, I am active in security training and awareness, supply chain management, Technical Surveillance Counter Measures (TCSM) – or bug-

sweeping – plus cloud security and cyber security standards. “After starting a degree at Bournemouth University in 2016, I went on to do a placement year with C3IA Solutions. “This is a leading company that was one of the first six to be accredited by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). “My placement year enabled me to learn about many aspects of the cyber industry and put the theory of the university course into practice. “I’m now a permanent member of staff and I’m keen to promote diversity and the employment of more women into the

cyber sector. “Women bring a different perspective into the workspace which helps to generate new ideas and different ways to deal with problems or complex issues. “It is also so important to hire young people so that the industry can evolve and grow. “The will is there from within the cyber sector, and we need to promote it within schools and help encourage children in this area – they will be the cyber security experts of the future. “Speaking at the Secure South West event has given me confidence that more people are thinking about the industry. “But its image should reflect the broad range of skills needed so that people don’t assume it is just about technology and too hard for them. “Although I have a good understanding of technology, I am not a programmer or coder but I have found in cyber many areas where my other skills have really come to the fore.”

Farming & Environment

A day at the farm with Tiffany Fleming

Tiffany Fleming is a volunteer at High Mead Farm in Longham, Ferndown. High Mead Farm is a working farm run to promote the benefits of engaging with animals, soil, and nature. They ‘create purposeful roles for our cofarmers, young people and adults alike, to help bring about a sense of wellbeing and self-worth that many have never experienced before’. While the nation was busy brandishing its bunting and organising street parties left, right and centre, everyone at High Mead quietly got on with their day-to-day routine of tending the animals and making sure the plants were happy. While there is no lack of staunch Monarchists among us, Bank Holidays mean very little to our Co-Farmers, so, as Queen and Country celebrated the Platinum Jubilee, the farm’s doors were open just as they are on any other day. The calm, tranquillity, and therapy the farm offers are needed by our Co-Farmers, as much - if not more - during these busy times. Back in 2017, MIND (previously known as the National Association for Mental Health), which itself celebrated a 70th anniversary in 2016, reported that approximately one in four people in the UK

will experience a mental health problem each year and, in England, one in six people report experiencing a common mental health problem (such as anxiety and depression) in any given week. A recent survey among school-age children drew the same conclusion. Add to that the effects of Lockdown and the pressure of the dramatically increasing cost of living and those figures are probably even higher. So, while many of us did embrace the opportunity to throw ourselves into the festivities and reconnect with friends and neighbours that we haven’t seen for yonks, for some, the stress of socialising, with the associated emotion and excitement, took its toll. So, it was business as usual at the farm for those who love routine and the quiet, simple things in life. However, in case you are worried that meant some

people missed out, for those that were up for it, there was an afternoon of fun to be had at a community picnic on the King George V Playing Fields in Ferndown, where Mark and the High Mead Farm team became stallholders for the day, displaying fresh farm-grown produce, eggs, and honey, as well as plants and local craft. Judging by their smiles, a super time was had by all. While the rain held off for the greater part of the day, a heavy downpour late afternoon was just what was needed at the farm. The combination of early summer sun and belated April showers has helped our

horticultural team no end. The first harvest of the year looks extremely promising, especially the big leafy lettuces and beautiful beetroot. It is so satisfying for the Co-Farmers to finally start harvesting the fruits of their labours and to proudly display them in their very own farm shop. We might not be able to boast 70 years of exemplary support of the Commonwealth, nor confidently lead a country through the decades, but our Co-Farmers can certainly grow a cracking carrot and their efforts are certainly to be applauded.

Young athletes’ fine show at Andover by Peter Impett The second match of the 2022 Wessex Young Athletes League brought what was probably the best club performance in this league. Andover hosted Sunday’s match and team manager Paula Hine was rewarded with an impressive turnout. There were so many fine performances that it isn’t possible to mention everyone without writing an essay. Star performance was Harry Ryan’s Grade 1 performance in the under 13 boys hurdles in a time of 12.7. He won the B string 100 in 13.7 following Zachary Fricker’s second place in the A race in 13.3. Zachary won the long jump with 4.66 and the B string 200 in 27.6 marginally behind Harry Ruscoe’s second place in the A string race on 27.5. Harry won the shot with 7m54 and Rory Connolly took great satisfaction from his winning 1m27 in the high jump. The under 13 girls also won their age group. Iris Jones was impressive with a winning 25.5 in the 200 metres. Esther Brooks won the hurdles in a personal best 12.7 with Lavender West taking the B string in 13.1 but winning the 800 in another personal best 2.35.8. Kayla Robbins competed in high jump for the first time and won with 1m30. Teammate Alissa Irvine also recorded a personal best 1m24 to give maximum points. William Langridge produced the goods

in the under 15 boys age group with a personal best 12.2 in the 100 and 5.30 in the long jump. Woody van der Felz ran a 41.2 300 metres and a 5m23 long jump for maximum points. Debutant Cadey Turner put the javelin out to 32m50 for a first time win. For the under 15 girls Lucy Lucas on the 100 metres in 13.1 and the 300 in 43.8. Imogen Rawles ran an inspired 800 metres to win in 2.40.3. The under 17 women also won their age group. 1)Team Kennett 440 2) Wimborne 414 3) Southampton 246 4) Andover and Overton 217 5) Camberley 195 6) Dorchester 96 The under 11s went one better in the

Mila Desborough was third overall having claimed second place in the vortex with 29m95 and Edie Ramsden and Rosie Bond tied in ninth place. The boys improved considerably on match 1 with the team gaining second place. Pets

A new pet in your family? Introducing a new pet into the family is exciting, but there’s also a huge amount of responsibility. Here’s a checklist to ensure your new arrival starts out life in the best possible way. Vaccinations – one of the key reasons pets are living longer is that we can vaccinate them against a range of infectious diseases. For dogs this includes distemper, canine hepatitis, parvo virus, leptospirosis, para influenza virus. In cats, cat flu, feline panleukopenia virus and feline leukaemia. Regular booster vaccinations, combined with a full health check by your vet, are the best way of protecting your pet. Fleas – most puppies and kittens will unfortunately

arrive with fleas, so it’s always a good idea for your vet to check them over on arrival. The best form of on-going flea control can then be discussed and started straight away.

Worming – if the parents weren’t regularly dewormed, the chances are there will be a high prevalence of roundworm infections. As your pup or kitten grows they are susceptible

to infection with both roundworms and tapeworms and will require regular worming treatment. Lungworm is also an increasing risk for dogs in some areas. Life-stage diets – there are tailored diets for each stage of your pet’s life, right through to those senior years. Feeding the correct diet can make a real difference to the health and wellbeing of pets. Microchipping – it’s important to have your new pet microchipped – the only permanent form of identification should your pet get lost. Pet Insurance – having good pet insurance takes away those worries of any unexpected vet bills or ongoing conditions.

It’s not about being an ordinary veterinary practice It’s about being something special It’s not just about up to date medical treatment It’s about care

HAPPY CHAPPIES: Sam with Rosie

by Lorraine Gibson Meet Sam Candy and her dog, Rosie, the first new recruit who responded to our appeal for doggie volunteers to visit Dorset care homes. The plea was on behalf of Caring Canines, the selffunded service, co-founded by friends, Sue Dennett and Julie Lankshear, that arranges the furry-friends visits. The response was immediate and a new team of visitors both dry and wet-nosed and including Sam and 10-yearold sprocker, Rosie from Ferndown - are now ready. Sue says: “Rosie was the first dog via the piece in the Stour and Avon magazine, so she’s very special to us. “The response was amazing. “Other new members are

visiting across Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch,” says Sue, “and Julie and I thank you for your help and support. “We had 20 enquiries, from which 12 people and dogs joined us - they’ve started to visit and share the happiness offered by the dogs. “The first, Sam and Rosie, are now visiting a Ferndown home where Rosie’s gentle manner is appreciated by staff and residents alike.” Sam says: “I knew Rosie would enjoy the fuss. “She’s very friendly and affectionate, so why not share that joy?” And the best part of being a Canine Carer? “For Rosie no doubt all the treats and endless stroking from the residents,” Sam says.

The RAW power of complete meals What are the benefits of feeding your dog raw? From making their teeth clean and coat glossy to improving their behaviour, raw food might just be the secret to a healthy and happy pooch. What exactly is raw dog food? Raw dog food is all about providing complete meals for dogs using fresh, raw ingredients to replicate their natural diet. This means no artificial additives, grain or high-temperature processing. At Cotswold RAW, all our complete raw meals follow the 80/20 rule. That’s 80 per cent raw meat and meaty bones, and 20 per cent fresh seasonal vegetables and herbs. They are nutritionally complete and developed with our veterinary consultant. Why choose raw dog food over kibble? Feeding raw can have a great impact on your dog’s health and vitality. If you’re thinking about making the switch, there’s a whole range of

ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE

benefits you might not know about – from enhanced digestion, improved oral hygiene and positive changes in behaviour. Dogs are carnivores after all, so feeding a balanced and complete raw diet imitates their natural diet – while processed pet food was created for the ease and convenience of humans, not

always with the nutritional benefit of dogs in mind. But we all lead busy lives and kibble has the benefit of a long shelf life, hence it’s more readily available. If you must feed processed food, find a top quality, grain-free product and use it as a ‘back-up’. Your dog will probably be the one to let you know which it prefers. However, it’s best to think of it as you would feed yourself – maybe a ready meal when you get back late from work but a wholesome meat and two veg at the weekend! Why is raw dog food more expensive? It is worth it? It’s a misunderstanding that raw feeding is expensive. You can feed a Labrador on less than the price of a cup of coffee per day! But ingredient quality is important – we’re committed to using premium British meat and organic, free-range chicken to make sure our product stays true to our Cotswold heritage.

Lurchers are looking for love We currently have four beautiful lurchers who are all looking for their new forever homes. Flower (pictured) is a two-year-old saluki cross. She is a typical sight hound and prefers larger dogs. She will need training and patience. No cats or small furries. Buddy is a one-year-old lurcher. Buddy can be nervous of people to start with but is coming on well (we think he may have been hit). He loves a one to one when he is very affectionate. Buddy seems very scared around other dogs and he needs input and socialising. Buddy has the capacity to be a loyal and loving friend.

Willow is a threeyear-old medium-sized crossbreed. Willow is initially a shy girl, but once she knows you, is very friendly. Willow will need patience to help her reach her full potential. Marley is a one-year-old Greyhound cross. He is a typical youngster who has lived with cats and dogs. If you are able to offer any of our lurchers, or their lovely friends, a forever home or a foster home, please contact our office on 01202 875000, e-mail: admin@waggytails.org.uk or visit our website: waggytails.org.uk.
