Remarkable story of Florence Nightingale

by Faith Eckersall

Florence Nightingale spent just two years carrying her lamp round the hospital in Crimea. The rest of her time was spent designing hospitals and irrigation schemes in India, helping organise a postal service for soldiers as well as working as a pioneering statistician and political influencer. Now her amazing life is the subject of an evening at St Marys Church Hall, Fordingbridge on May 21. Louise Jordan will present Florence – original song and storytelling in aid of Fordingbridge Museum, with a 7pm for 7.30pm start. Tickets cost £15 and include a light supper and an informal quiz and you can bring your own bottle. Tickets are available from Fordingbridge Bookshop, Fordingbridge Museum or ticketsource.co.uk.

Signs Of Spring in Broadstone

by Rex Bale

As an appetiser the young musicians of the Camerata music club, who had just enjoyed a masterclass with the SALWA quartet, played two pieces by Mozart. The main programme started with Beethoven’s incredible last String Quartet No 16 in F major, Op 135. The longer third movement had a quiet gentle feeling of repose, and the introductory slow chords in the last movement are followed by the faster main theme of the movement. Anton Webern’s Langsamer Satz (Slow Movement) is an uncharacteristic piece from him with a range of emotions from yearning to dramatic turmoil before the main melody which appears three times during the piece. After the interval we enjoyed the Romanze from Fanny Hensel’s String Quartet No 6. She was Felix Mendelssohn’s sister and her compositions were suppressed at the time due to women not being accepted as composers. The final work was the String Quartet No. 6 in F minor composed by Felix Mendelssohn in 1847 and was the last major piece he completed. The highlight is the beautiful adagio of the third movement which is a thoughtful and reflective reverie. A new partnership has been announced between our Poole Society for Young Musicians charity that runs Broadstone Music Series and the chamber music department of the Royal Academy of Music London. Finally, hearty thanks are due to the SALWA quartet and to Alison Kay and the many volunteer helpers who

Following their successful Festival of Words in a Day earlier this spring, the organisers of Blandford Literary Festival have revealed new plans to put the town on the literary map. Not only are they planning a longer event next year, they are also planning a series of one-off writer and book events in the town during the remainder of 2022. Historical mystery author Paula Harmon, who is one of the organisers, said: “We would very much like to develop the festival into something which people talk about. We want to keep it fresh and interesting, while keeping its roots firmly in the aims we started with: to put Blandford on the literary map, to showcase less well-known authors and to encourage creativity.” She and the volunteer team are currently drawing up a list of speakers and people who can lead interesting oneoff panels and discussions. “One of the things we did in the day festival in March was called Why Murder, which featured a group of authors who had written murders or mysteries,” says Paula. “There were three of us on it and it worked really well, so

County river artist Gary

by Faith Eckersall

Few lives in this part of Dorset have not been touched in some way by the River Stour. Whether you’ve fished or paddled in its waters, or live in one of the many places that take its name – from Stourpaine and Stour Provost, to Stourton and Sturminster Newton – it will have played a part in your life. Shaftesbury artist Gary Cook has been similarly enchanted, and charts the Stour’s stately progress, from a spring at Stourhead in Wiltshire, to a river meeting the sea. His exhibition, Wend: The Stour From Source To Sea at The Art Stable in Child Okeford, features 30 watercolours he has produced, celebrating the Stour’s 61-mile journey to the English Channel. “My paintings include silhouettes and names of the many species that I see and are dependent on the river and which are sadly threatened by pollution,” he says. As well as producing the atmospheric artworks, Gary, who was the senior artist at The Sunday Times for more than 25 years, has also researched his beloved subject. He says there are 48 tributaries that make up the 781 miles of rivers and streams feeding the Stour. “This has given me lots of

scope for painting sites and I’m receiving lots of interest in the upcoming show, as rivers really strike a chord with people” he says. The exhibition takes place at The Art Stable, Child Okeford, from June 11 to July 9. Visit: cookthepainter.com.

Five decades of fine music

In 2020 the well-known West Moors Singers should have been celebrating their 50th anniversary. But they are now able to return and will be performing music from the last five decades at St Martin’s Church, Moorlands Road, West Moors, on Wednesday, May 25 at 7.30pm and Saturday, May 28 at 2.30pm. Missing the 50th anniversary was a huge disappointment said Dianne Tompkins, musical director and to make up for it the programme includes items from the popular Joseph And His Technicoloured Dreamcoat, Les Miserables, The Beatles, Sister Act, and Mamma Mia. Tickets are only £7 and can be obtained from ‘Buds and Beans’ Café next to the church, from 01202 870769 or at the door. For more details, call 07816 933319, 01202 870769, or email westmoorssingers@ gmail.com.
