The debate is the result of a previous complaint from locals wishing to restore the right of way being objected to by the landowner, who described previous attempts as ‘an utter waste of public money’ a ‘mockery’ and a ‘non-story’.
One said: “Historic maps and records inspected by Dorset (County) Council show that the public has used the route along Mill Lane up to Millbank House since as far back as 1613.” He adds: “The Finance Act 1910 records provided further evidence. Documents from 1916 also refer to the ‘public drinking place’, accessed by the slipway in Mill Lane next to Jessop House. And continues: “If a public route is proved to have existed it doesn’t matter how many signs, gates or bollards are put up - the public right still exists.”
Do you have fond memories of being able to walk along Mill Lane and the slipway to sit on a bench - or on the big stones - and admire the river? Or having easy access to the High Street from there? Perhaps you recall it being a pathway for drays hauling goods to and from Ellis’ Brewery? Residents are sending out a clarion call for action from locals who do, since they’ve been advised that in order to restore this access - which has been in dispute for many years - they must prove that it ever existed. They’re adamant that the area close to Jessop House and its immediate surroundings, was once easily accessible, unlike today where it’s blocked off by bollards, plants and even gates. Now they’re urging readers to send anecdotes and - even better - photos to the council as evidence that people once used the location freely.
A homeowner affected by the disagreement says: “We have been advised that the rights of way at Mill Lane and in particular the slipway to the river, which has been cordoned off, will be the subject of consultation in September, then submitted to the Planning Inspectorate.”
“It is a right of way. It used to be open,” says a resident. “I can remember taking my son along there and sitting on a bench admiring the river. Sadly, I never took a photo to prove it!” Perhaps someone did . . .
River route right of way row returns
After a commitment to investigate further, residents received a letter from Dorset Council’s Kerry J Smith - on behalf of Vanessa Perry - on July 20 this year saying that, due to a ‘fundamental error’ in the previous Order, a new and corrected Order needed to be created and re-advertised around September. And here’s the crucial part: When these notices are posted (residents claim that previously they mysteriously disappeared), there’s only about six weeks in which to respond. So speed is of the essence and, please note, previous resources can be resubmitted, but evidence or objections sent prior to those advertisements appearing will not be taken into account.

A crowd of Wimborne youngsters turned eco-warriors while taking part in KidsVenture, St John’s Church annual holiday club. Every year the club has a theme and this time it focused on the Christian idea of real transformation – including the need for change for the better in the way that we care for the planet. So, as well as enjoying the usual games, craft and bible sessions, the children also helped transform a small patch of ground next to the church into an ‘Eco Space’, by preparing it to be wildlife-friendly.

it carries a lot of traffic, much of which is moving at very fast speeds. It is notorious for accidents, particularly involving motorbikes. I think it would be foolhardy to attempt to walk along this road, with very limited escape onto verges. Please warn readers to avoid those two miles of the route; it could save their lives.
It is one year on since the Taliban takeover in OneAfghanistan.yearsince we witnessed those horrific scenes of people desperately trying to flee Kabul, right. For some Afghans, it’s one year since reaching safety in the UK. But for others, it’s one year of hiding in Afghanistan from the wrath of the regime, one year of fearing for their lives as they desperately try to reach family members already here. But there is almost no way for Afghans to reach safetythere are virtually no routes to reach the UK. Since the evacuations last year, the UK Government has repeatedly broken promises to Afghans, including those who helped the British mission. Many of those who were evacuated are still stuck in hotels, unable to reunite with loved ones still in Afghanistan or to move on with their lives here. In BCP area we have several Afghan families in hotels and some who have family who cannot get out of TheAfghanistan.promised safe routes have not materialised, and those that do exist are inadequate for people trapped in the region. The Government must urgently do more to help Afghans safely reach the UK and family here, as it has rightly done with Ukrainian refugees.

J Howes Chris Slade comments: I agree that the route down the B3078 is far from ideal for pedestrians, but currently, there’s no practical alternative for them, as the western 2/3 of the joint parish of Hinton is almost devoid of public rights of way. Perhaps the Parish Council - possibly assisted by Dorset Council - could negotiate with the local landowners to provide suitable rights of way or permissive ways. The large scale map shows that there are already some paths but they’re not (yet!) recorded as public.

Throwing good money after bad is never wise and we now have a fresh opportunity to grasp the nettle and kill this expensive white elephant.
A strong dose of deregulation, particularly in the energy sector, must be added to this agenda. We should stop forcing fuel companies to use valuable grain to make bio diesel. We should end restrictions on the use of household coal and wood burning stoves for heating, The net zero CO2 emissions target for 2050 should be subject to the test of affordability and legal constraints upon deporting and deterring bogus asylum seekers must be repealed.
As one of the first MPs to campaign for removal of VAT from energy bills, it is unfortunate that this has still not been implemented.
A lot has been written about the need to decouple the wholesale electricity price from the cost of gas and instead peg it to the cost of Yougeneration.candothis for yourself today with domestic solar. But a farmer can’t put up a wind turbine, or install a solar array. It’s crazy to me that communities are prevented from achieving energy independence in their own backyards. Whilst domestic energy consumers have rightly been the political focus, businesses need support too. They don’t have the benefit of price caps. Labour has already called for business rate relief to be increased to £17,000 rateable value, and a £1bn fund to help energy intensive industries this winter. Whilst this is welcome, it should be accompanied by regulatory changes to prevent all the burden falling on the Fortaxpayer.example, there’s no obligation on energy suppliers to provide businesses with a quote. Companies large and small can end up getting transitioned on to ‘default’ rates when their fixed contract expires, or ‘deemed’ rates when they take on a new property. Whereas the domestic price cap is currently around 28p/kWh, some deemed rates are hitting £1/kWh. There’s no justification for this. I’m arguing that businesses should benefit from protection similar to the current iteration of the domestic price cap, where energy supplier profits are limited to 1.9%.
All this could be done in response to what is now a national emergency. During the ‘stagflation’ of the 1970s, the most effective response was shrinking the size of the public sector and encouraging redeployment into the more productive private sector. Vanity capital projects were abandoned and scarce resources released for use elsewhere. Our nation can no longer afford, if it ever could, HS2. The new Prime Minister should cancel the project and not be deterred by the ‘sunk costs’ argument.
Dorset Labour GREG WILLIAMS
Political round-up Opinions necessarily reflect those of the publisher We need a strong dose of deregulation
All these measures would show a commitment by the Government to interfere and tax less and encourage individuals and businesses to take more responsibility.

expressed do not
The enormity of the responsibility upon the new Prime Minister when he or she takes office on 6th September cannot be overstated. I, therefore, welcome the commitment by Liz Truss to an immediate Budget to cancel the National Insurance rises, remove the green levy on energy bills and abandon the massive, planned increase in corporation tax.
Wasting ‘sunk costs’ is politically embarrassing but it is a fallacy to believe that it is right economically to stick with bad projects.
The fact is though, we’d be far less worried about keeping the lights on this winter if we had France’s fleet of nuclear power plants. What matters is the cost per megawatt hour and we would all be delighted if Hinkley Point C were generating at £106/MWh right Sonow!like most pragmatists, I believe there’s a large role for nuclear in this country’s future. The non-fossil fuel alternative to new nuclear is a lot more of all types of renewables coupled with battery storage on a scale that’s difficult to comprehend. This route is not without its moral dilemmas. Consider for example all the rare minerals needed for batteries that come from African and Asian countries with poor labour practices and environmental protections. And despite the waste from spent batteries not being as dangerous as that of nuclear, it’s still hazardous. Whilst offshore wind has truly taken off, unresolved connection issues remain. Our grid would be more resilient if we had more renewables closer to centres of consumption. So, like many, I’m really disappointed both Tory leadership candidates have committed to continue to block onshore wind.
The cost per day of each NHS hospital bed is over £900. It is, therefore, scandalous that there were 315 NHS patients in Dorset hospitals at the end of July who were still awaiting discharge seven days after finishing their hospital treatment. This is an increase from 275 a month earlier. If all patient discharges from hospitals in Dorset were carried out within seven days, more than an extra £100million a year would become available. I have sought the assurance of Patricia Miller, Chief Executive of the NHS Dorset Integrated Care Board, that by 30th September all delays of more than seven days in Dorset will have been eliminated. If this is not achieved I shall be suggesting that the costs arising from those delayed discharges should be borne by those responsible. Perhaps that would concentrate minds.
More regulation to protect the taxpayer I’ve been struck by the number of articles and letters on UK energy policy in recent local publications. I try to avoid returning to the same topic on consecutive fortnights, but feel it’s warranted, given the current energy crisis. With nuclear, it’s easy to criticise the huge sums involved in both the construction and decommissioning of reactors.

LPAs allow you to nominate a trusted person called an attorney. They can make decisions on your behalf if you are no longer able to do so. An LPA gives the attorney the authority to act on your behalf. Both financially and with matters pertaining to your health and care. It goes without saying that attorneys must be people you trust.
Touching tale behind flower festival by Lorraine Gibson After seven long years, the Wimborne Flower Festival will take place in the Minster Church. It marks the 900th anniversary of original parts of the church and foundations, some of which date back to AD705.
The festival is particularly close to Sharon’s heart, as it’s raising funds for local charities, including the Forest Holme Hospice, which supported her husband before he died.
“I first conceived the idea five years ago,” says Sharon from Corfe Mullen. “We are portraying so many trades that every colour will be used. We have amazing props, including a beautiful vintage car.” In a heartening example of community spirit, other flower clubs from across the county, and one from Hampshire, will join the Minster’s arrangers to create the fantasy.

FORDINGBRIDGE
Known as the northern gateway to e New Forest, Fordingbridge, is a small riverside town. Built on the banks of the River Avon, Fordingbridge was recorded in the Domesday Book under the name ‘Forde’. A key landmark of the town is the medieval bridge, upstream from the ford, with its seven graceful arches that span the river. Once an industrial town and commercial centre, Fordingbridge was also noted for its smuggling - the infamous Captain Diamond, the ‘Smuggler King’ spent much of his time in a local hostelry. During the 16th century, the town was a centre for cloth making. 07894

Augustus John’s amboyant and promiscuous lifestyle and his tendency to delay paying his bills did not endear him to many of the locals. Consequently, when it was proposed that a statue of him should be erected in Fordingbridge there was hostility from some of the towns folk. However, many traders thought it would be a good thing for the town and that it would bring visitors who would help the local economy. initial

Most readers will know that Fordingbridge can boast that it was once the home of Augustus John who was one of Britain’s most revered painters. Augustus John was, and to a certain extent still is, a controversial gure in Fordingbridge. He had infamously lived in a ménage a trois with his wife Ida Nettleship and his mistress Dorothy “Dorelia” McNeil. A er bearing him ve children Ida died in 1907 and four years later Augustus and Dorelia moved to Bournemouth where they set up a bohemian commune in the grounds of Alderney Manor complete with gypsy caravans. In 1927 they moved to Fryern Court in Fordingbridge. John was known for his brilliant gure drawings and had become the leading society portrait artist of the time. He had numerous a airs in his lifetime and was said to pat on the head every child he met as he walked down the Kings Road in Chelsea just in case they were one of his. He liked his beer and was a regular in Fordingbridge pubs when he lived at Fryern Court.

A-Level success despite challenges
“Most importantly well over 80% of students have secured their first choice university course.”
Absolutely delighted with Canfordians Canford School announced on its website: “We are absolutely delighted with the outstanding results achieved by Canfordians sitting A-Level and Pre-U examinations this summer, with 40.4% of all grades awarded A*, 73.7% A*/A and 92.4% A*/B.
“The last few years have been very difficult for teachers, pupils and their families and exam boards alike. “Comparisons with previous years need to be considered in context as the landscape and factors which affected the award of Centre Assessed Grades of 2020 and Teacher Assessed Grades of 2021 were very different.”
Twyneham - one in three grades an A* A spokesman from the school in Christchurch said: “We’re absolutely delighted for our Year 13 students today. Despite the national picture, they achieved even more than last year with more than one in three grades A* or A.
Ringwood School - 65.4% achieve top grades A spokesman for the school said: “This cohort faced the challenge of never having sat external examinations before as their GCSE exams were abruptly cancelled in the summer of 2020.
Outstanding A Level Results at Ferndown Upper School “After a challenging year, Ferndown Upper School students received their long-awaited exam results,” says headteacher Philip “TheyJones. have been superb throughout the Pandemic and have deservedly performed extremely well in their A levels.
“The headline figures continued to be in line with previous years with 100% pass rate and over half of the students grades being the highest possible, but due to the impact that Covid has had on all students, Dorset Secondary School headteachers have agreed to focus upon their students and their achievements rather than school headline results.”
by Lorraine Gibson After a tough couple of years, our region’s A-level pupils finally got their results and, despite gloomy predictions, the overall result is one of success QE pupils’ tremendous results Katie Boyes, headteacher of Queen Elizabeth’s School said: “We are absolutely delighted with the results. “The examinations that they completed are the first external examinations that they have sat. The results that they have achieved are tremendous and we are incredibly proud of them and congratulate them “Thereall.are too many students to name individually.”
DELIGHTED: Successful students at QE School, top, and at St Peter’s
Ms Boyes added: “The majority of students have accepted a place at their first choice university. The resilience shown under the circumstances of their education is “Theyremarkable.arean exceptional, inspiring, and talented group and we wish them all the best for their future endeavours.”
“We are delighted that our students have equalled outstanding A-Level performances of the past.
“The percentage of top grades is 65.4%. A*/A/B- and A*-C grades is 88%; the average grade is B.”
“An eight-week school closure in the first year of their A-Levels meant many lessons were subject to disruption.
St. Peter’s students’ resilience and courage seemany A* and A grades Mr Doyle, headteacher at St. Peter’s in Bournemouth, said: “Congratulations to our Year 13s who have performed exceptionally well, despite the challenges of a very difficult and disrupted couple of years.
“Despite this, our students have shown the utmost determination and resilience and have today reaped the rewards.
“We’ve been impressed and inspired by their resilience and courage and this determination has been rewarded with excellent academic results. “So many students have achieved A* and A grades across all of their subjects that there are simply too many to name. “As well as great results, we strive to enable our students to follow their aspirational pathway choices, whether university or another route. “Over recent years we have seen a higher proportion of our students gaining places at Russell Group Universities and we are delighted that this upward trend has continued.”

WHAT’S ON Beefburger lunch
Lovely memories. After I left school, I went to work for a bank in the square. You remember those, it had people behind a counter and you could pay money in and take money out and have a conversation with a person, rather than a robot on the Iphone!usedto go to my grandma’s at lunch time. She used to cook me a full dinner and then, when I got home, my mum used to cook me a full dinner as well. As I didn’t want to upset either of them, I used to eat both!! When my clothes got tighter, I had to stop eating two meals!! I would choose which meal to eat depending on who was cooking my So,favourites!mylunch time snack for Martin went down very well, he preferred the bread to a roll as he thinks a roll is too big! The halloumi fries were there to bulk it out a bit, and who doesn’t like squeaky cheese with their meal
HalloumiCheese Method Using a cookie cutter, cut the bread into a round the same size as the burger
Ingredients 2Breadbeefburgers (I recommend those from Oakley Butchers!)
Okay, this may be a bit of a cheat recipe as I haven’t made the beefburgers myself, why would you when the butcher makes them so much better than you could?! So, as I am not working at the moment, it usually falls on me to make some lunch. We have had all the usual lunches, sandwiches and wraps, etc, so I thought I would try something different. Martin is lucky really as, when I was at school, my mum used to make me Fry’s cream chocolate sandwiches! Yes, that’s right, she used to slice them up and put them in a sandwich! My Dad liked them as well... that was before I went to the grammar school annex. My gran used to live on the corner of the road to the annex, so at lunch times my friends and I used to go to her flat. Our lunches used to consist mainly of chocolate and fizzy pop! She used to have a drawer in her kitchen dresser, which always had tubes of Smarties and lemon sherbet dips plus loads of other things. In the winter, we were allowed to toast bread and crumpets on her fire and then just eat them with butter.

A spoonful of sugar helps the weight go down
Let me tell you a story about one of my first clients, we’ll call her Jane. She came to me as she wanted to get fitter, improve her diet and lose some weight. Jane had a bit of a sweet tooth. She completed a food diary for me and was having five or six mugs of tea each morning with three teaspoons of sugar in each Janemug.liked it sweet. After a conversation about her eating habits and routines, I suggested she reduce the sugar in her tea by one teaspoon in each mug. She could try this for a week and then maybe reduce it again a little more as her taste “Isadapted.thatit?” she asked, “I thought you were going to tell me I needed to cut all sugar out of my diet!”. “If I said that, would you do it?” I Sheasked.said, “Yes, I would. I’d give it a go”. Jane was keen to improve her diet. I asked her what she thought might happen if asked to cut all the sugar out of her tea. After a few moments, she said she’d probably be able to manage it for a few days, but then she’d give up and go back to her sugar. “How would that make you feel?” I asked. “I’d feel a failure and be embarrassed to admit to you that I couldn’t stick to it”. “But you can stick to one teaspoon less in each mug?”, I asked, “oh yes, that’s nothing”, she replied. If we’d cut out all the sugar, Jane wasn’t confident that this was something she’d keep up; she said she’d only last three days, so she’d be maybe 300g Thisdown.would have no long-term impact on her health or her weight loss goal. It would also, and most importantly, leave her feeling that she lacks willpower and disheartened. Instead, cutting down a little, to begin with, to two rather than three teaspoons of sugar would mean she’d reduce her intake by 25g a day. If that doesn’t seem a lot, remember that the difference is that this is something Jane was very confident she could stick with long term. Reducing by one teaspoon in each mug, she’d be cutting her sugar intake by about 175g, or 700 calories a week. That’s starting to look like a bag of sugar. Even if she’d just managed one teaspoon less in each cup, over a year, she’d have reduced her energy intake by 36,400 Smallcalories.habit changes we can stick to are better for us than optimal habit changes we quit as they’re too difficult. It’s very common to overestimate what we can achieve in a short space of time, but underestimate what we can achieve if we do something that seems quite small, but over a long period.

The misconceptions of hypnosis
In with...association
When I became a hypnotherapist I made it my mission to help the world understand that hypnosis is not the scary phenomenon it is sometimes portrayed to be in the Hypnosismedia.provides a fast, natural and effective way to create positive change in your life, simply by harnessing the power of your imagination. We all drift in and out of hypnotic trances throughout the day when we are focusing on the various aspects of our lives. It’s natural to all of us, so you already know how to do itbut you may not realise how to channel it for your benefit.
I love to dispel the many misconceptions people have about hypnosis, such as: It’s mind control! I might tell you all my deepest secrets! The only person controlling your mind is YOU - and you’ll learn how to do it for positive benefit, to take yourself out of anxiety and fear or unwanted thoughts, behaviours and habits. You won’t tell me anything you don’t want me to know, because you will be creating your own hypnotic trance. It’s not something I do to you, I just guide you into a place where it becomes easy for you to make the changes you need. I might do crazy things, like those people in hypnosis stage shows I’ve seen! You won’t. Those people act like that because they have been selected for their very great hypnotic abilities. All participants volunteer to take part and they do all those crazy things because they are there willingly and want to be part of the show. You’ll make me sleep! Hypnosis isn’t sleep. You’ll maintain a comfortable level of awareness and control throughout, and just as you can ‘snap yourself out’ of a daydream, you can do the same with hypnosis. Stage hypnotists use the word ‘SLEEP’ in their shows because it’s an easily understood command - and it creates a dramatic effect for the audience! Isn’t hypnosis just another word for meditation or mindfulness? Meditation and mindfulness are concerned with what is unchanging; with hypnosis we are actively trying to change something in your experience. The process can feel a little similar - think of those guided visualisations you get at the end of a yoga class. The language I use is subtly different, though, designed to encourage your analytical, conscious mind to drift off, giving access to the unconscious part of you where all your automatic functions, memories and deep-seated beliefs are held. By getting the conscious part of you out of the way, we can slip helpful suggestions into the unconscious, creating the change you need. Sounds too good to be true? Think about how children learn best when they are having fun and losing themselves in imagination. They soak up new ideas without even realising it. Hypnosis is exactly the same. It’s natural and powerfuland it can help you!
Are you of an age that you remember Mr Benn from the animated television series of the early Seventies?
26 New Stour & Avon, August 26, 2022 stouravonmagazine.co.uk
Wearing a metaphorical mask n
It was about a chap that would go into a changing room, try on an outfit, leave the shop through a magic door, have an adventure, before returning to the changing room to don his normal clothes and resume Ilife.think I’m a bit like Mr Benn! And I don’t mean in the way that I’m donning a different outfit every day, which of course I am, but in a way that I am wearing different masks. I have different masks for different family members, various masks for different friends, masks for clients, masks for colleagues, even a mask for when I’m walking down the high street. The only place that I don’t have a mask is in the sanctuary of my own home, although there is always a mask handy if someone comes to the front door! I am different for everyone I meet. Everyone gets a different version of me. I am me at my very core, but I give a filtered version depending on who I come in to contact with. I’m pretty sure I’m right in thinking that it’s not just me that does Ifthis.you were to meet me you’d think I was an extrovert, for I am a people person, I love connecting with people, I’m chatty, I make conversation, I always give attention to others, I like to make people feel good. But I’m actually an introvert, for I truly love to retreat into my own little shell, removing all masks, in order to reflect, recharge and be authentically Forme. years I thought I was an extrovert because of how I behaved around people. But a key realisation for me was on my wedding day. I thought I would love being the centre of attention, but I actually found that I did not like it much at all, it made me anxious and with hindsight I know that during that event, I was a long way from showing the real me. I believe our metaphorical masks protect our vulnerable inner true selves and provide us with a coping mechanism to handle the difficulties of social life. And I don’t think it matters whether we are introverted, extroverted, mask wearer or Whatnot. I think is important is that at our very core, we truly know when we are being our authentic self and that we try hard to live as authentically as possible for as much of the time as we can. Can you recognise when you are wearing a mask? How often does the authentic you come out? Victoria Arnold is a life coach from Victoriaarnold.co.ukWimborne

September charm The long range forecast looks good for the bank holiday, and I’m sure a lot of you will be making the most of the long weekend if you can, either with friends and family, or out exploring our wonderful area. Once September hits, with the cooler, damper days and nights, the plants start to switch into autumn mode, which often means a growth spurt, along with later on the stunning changing leaf colours!
It’s a beautiful and useful month. Give hedges a trim The birds have finished nesting now, so go forth and tame that hedge! Now is a great time to trim off all that summer growth, without giving it time to throw too many new soft shoots that will be susceptible to any cold weather we have. Plant spring flowering bulbs, except tulips! I love adding a few choice narcissi varieties each year to the beds. The choice ones are much more expensive, but look stunning and a little goes a long way. Also add bulbs to pots, where they’ll brighten up the display come spring again. Lawn care Lawns have taken quite a battering this summer, so need a bit of tlc to bring them back to optimum health. Fortunately, autumn weather is perfect for good lawn establishment, and grass is resilient and responds well to care and attention. Pick apples and pears as they ripen and before the wind blows them down, and harvest other crops as they ripen. Plant up autumn containers Summer containers can be kept going till the end of the month or a little longer with regular deadheading and care, but really are looking past their best, so if you want autumn/winter/spring pots and baskets, bite the bullet and have them out.

Home & Garden Bee sure you have a welcoming garden
by Lorraine Gibson
It’s hoped that the event will inspire people to take a fresh look at their gardens and get more involved. And if you’re passionate about sustainability, gardening and wildlife, and have skills to share, the charity’s seeking new trustees and volunteers to help promote its ethos and build on the crucial work it carries out throughout the year - so it’s your chance find out how to get involved. Admission of £6.95 (concessions apply) on the day goes to the Knoll Gardens Foundation. knollgardensfoundation.org.
Did you know that Britain’s gardens occupy more space than all our nature reserves put together? Imagine, then, the difference we could make to our wildlife if we shared our plots with nature. The Knoll Gardens Foundation, established in 2008, believes that gardens should not only be beautiful, but also act as ‘minireserves offering refuge and food for wildlife - an approach that benefits us humans, too’. To encourage this, the charity’s Open Day on Friday, September 16, aims to inspire visitors with its sustainable, wildlifefriendly approach to gardening, showing how sensitive management makes for a welcome place for wildlife. They demonstrate the stunning effect that can be achieved with grasses and perennials, shrubs and trees, with little maintenance, minimum resources and by following these methods: Have flowering shrubs and perennials throughout the year to provide nectar for bees, hoverflies, butterflies and moths. Delay cutting back grasses and leave dead stems and seed heads to overwinter, providing important habitats for insects to hibernate in and for birds to feed. Have a pond - crucial for attracting and sustaining the likes of dragonflies, frogs, newts and aquatic insects, with birds, bats and other insects feeding on ‘fly life’.
Stroll amongst naturalistic plantings from 10am to 5pm and meet wildlife and garden experts and learn more about their stunning grasses, colourful perennials and the wide variety of insects, birds, amphibians and mammals that call Knoll Gardens home.

Folk hero Peggy Seeger is bringing her First Farewell Tour to Forest Arts on September 15 in a show that will bring songs and stories old and new. As Ewan MacColl’s partner and muse, she was the inspiration for MacColl’s classic The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (the title of her much-praised recent memoir) and his influence will be felt, along with that of her latest album, 2021’s First Farewell, which was named Mojo Magazine’s #1 Folk Album of the Year. Now in her mid-80s, Peggy’s light burns as brightly as ever, still touring her legendary live performances that might include an unaccompanied traditional ballad, followed by an anecdote from her remarkable life, before launching into a topical song about drugs, war, hormones, politicians, unions, women, love or ecology. A multi-instrumentalist (piano, guitar, 5-string banjo, autoharp, English concertina and Appalachian dulcimer), she is lauded for her feminist and political songs. She has made 25 solo recordings and participated in more than a hundred more. Her 2021 album First Farewell is a collection of 11 new songs written and recorded with family members. The organisers of Planet Purbeck’s second festival are urging those who wish to hold an event to book their slots as places are filling up fast. They aim to make it bigger, better and broader than last autumn’s festival, which more than 2,000 people enjoyed at a host of special activities staged across Purbeck. For a start, it will be expanded from a week to 10 days, starting on Friday, September 16, and centred around major events in Wareham, Corfe Castle, Studland and Swanage. And although the general ecothemes of sustainability and protection of nature will be maintained, there will be added ‘fun’ elements such as music and food and drink. Planet Purbeck’s Rob Waitt said: “Our first festival was a shot in the dark for us but exceeded every expectation. “Nearly 90 per cent of those who attended the events said they had been made more aware of environmental matters. And the vast majority said they had been inspired to change their behaviour or lifestyle. That’s a terrific result for Purbeck – and the Activitiesplanet.”staged can range across the spectrum of ecology, from nature walks and workshops to photographic competitions and talks on community projects. Rob said: “Those who held events last year told us they had generated income and helped to raise the profile of their business or organisation.” Hosting is free and activities can be booked at planetpurbeck. org/festival or by complanetpurbeckevents@gmail.emailing

Well, August certainly did her best to get us all hot and bothered. Whilst I am a big fan of the warmer weather, I much prefer to sit in it, rather than work in it, but life on the farm rarely allows for such luxuries!

Tiffany Fleming is a volunteer at High Mead Farm in Longham, Ferndown. High Mead Farm is a working farm run to promote the benefits of engaging with animals, soil, and nature. They ‘create purposeful roles for our cofarmers, young people and adults alike, to help bring about a sense of wellbeing and self-worth that many have never experienced before’.
A day at the farm
It wasn’t just me that was baking either. Nik, our newly-appointed High Mead Farm chef, launched the first of our Co-Farmers’ cookery classes in the Farm’s training kitchen on one of the hottest days of the year – but what a success it was, and so delicious was the Blueberry shortbread the team made in their first session, I completely forgot to take any photos of it! Nic and his High Mead commis chefs will be making lots of tasty jams and relishes, cakes and pastries and we are looking forward to their next session very much. The pride in the faces of the participating Co-Farmers as they shared their accomplishments with their friends and colleagues was not lost on the Farm’s staff. The ability to prepare tasty food from scratch, something many do without a second thought, will serve our Co-Farmers well in the future, and we are hoping that a few may get bitten by

the baking bug and choose to pursue catering and hospitality further learning, and even opportunitiesemploymentperhaps. We are also looking forward to Nic rustling up some marvellous marrow recipes – as we have an abundance of marrows at the moment. Almost as satisfying as the chefs’ Blueberry Shortbread, is seeing some of our other High Mead projects come to fruition. The replacement stables are almost complete and the sensory garden is looking a treat, with the pond, a project which has been under way for some time, now almost pretty much perfect too. The calming sound of the water adds a wonderful dimension to the garden, and will eventually be home to the Farm’s fish, although upon its completion, there was some discussion on whether a quick dip would be allowed. So hot and bothered were we, we almost took the plunge! But, with water shortages very much in the news and the threat of imminent hosepipe bans, High Mead has taken a very sensible approach to its watering requirements and so we simply headed for the shade. It is hard to watch the vegetation wilting in the intense heat of the day, particularly when you’ve seen the effort the Co-Farmers have made to nurture it thus far. So, to cheer some of the regulars up, a trip was taken to a local blueberry farm for a bit of ‘Pick Your Own’. It most certainly did the trick and the team returned not only ladened with beautiful berries but sporting broad smiles too. Not so much a ‘Pick Your Own’ trip, more a ‘Perk Yourself Up’ trip,

Ageing cats are unfortunately a bit more susceptible to disease and as they get older, more frequent checks are required in order to pick up on any changes; namely weight loss, stiffness or lack of appetite. Often, blood and urine tests will be recommended once your cat is over a certain age in order to monitor any loss of kidney or liver function.

Lindsay spent four and a half months at the Spinal Treatment Centre at Salisbury District Hospital. She underwent spinal surgery to stabilise her spine and then learnt all of the skills necessary to live an independent life such as dressing, showering and moving about. Lindsay said: “The best way of dealing with it was to realise this was my life now although it was still very, very hard. “In the hospital you’ve got this support network around you and it’s a safe bubble. “The shock and reality is once you leave that and try to live life independently.

“A black Mercedes accelerated towards the traffic lights on the corner, wanting to get there before they changed, and clipped Vicki’s heel. “The driver didn’t stop – they may not have known they’d done it as the only part of the car that touched Vicki was the rubber of the tyre.” Vicki broke three metatarsals in her foot. She said: “That was the cusp, the change really. “The surgeon, when they discovered how bad it was, said this is a life-changing injury. “It was significant damage and a Lisfranc injury. “It’s like the whole support mechanism of your foot.”

It was ten years ago this month – August 2012 – when Vicki Baumann’s life changed in a matter of seconds.

Mike added: “Some days we feel the need to pinch ourselves that we’re now actually living “It’shere.an amazing place.”

Mike said: “Vicki was just slightly behind me, crossing the road, and we were about to mount the other kerb.
The then 50-year-old was hit by a speeding car while crossing London’s Regent Street with her husband, Mike Conn. The collision crushed and twisted her foot. Little did Vicki know that it would trigger a series of events which would eventually lead to her relocating to Dorset with her own yoga business.
“I said: ‘No. I need to make a change – and a complete one. “I’m going to leave my career – and at that stage I was a shareholder in the print business – and do it properly.’ “It was a really big decision.” Vicki left her job at the end of February 2020 to launch her new yoga business. Three weeks later the country went into lockdown. But Vicki said: “I quickly moved my classes to online.
“The last two months have really started to pick up and I’ve got work through until AsSeptember.”fortheirdecision to relocate to Dorset, Vicki said: “We feel incredibly settled. “All those years that Mike tried to persuade me to come out of London – and I had my doubts – but I literally woke up the next day after moving and haven’t thought about my old life at all.”

For Vicki, a high-flying career woman whose roles up until then included co-founding and being a director of a digital printing business, it was time to change direction. She said: “I’d practised yoga and gone to classes from my late 20s but hadn’t done it for five or six years. “It was a really challenging time as I did everything possible to walk completely unaided again. “There was physio, a small amount of swimming at first, walking and a little bit of running to build up strength. “But I realised that the only thing that was going to get me back that strength and flexibility was my yoga. I decided to reprioritise my health over business.”
