Developer unveils £30m new homes vision by Andrew Diprose Churchill Retirement Living has unveiled £30million plans to regenerate a former gasworks site in the heart of Christchurch with around 170 new homes. It describes the plans – a mixture of retirement living, open market homes suitable for first time buyers and affordable housing – as ‘one of our most ambitious and exciting redevelopment projects to date’. Since acquiring the site on Bridge Street, the Ringwoodbased developer has been working closely with adjoining landowners and BCP Council to develop its plans as part of the emerging BCP Local Plan. Churchill says its vision is to deliver a sustainable new development, meeting the needs of all demographics and providing affordable housing, open market homes and retirement housing in one well-connected location.
n An artist’s impression of the gas works development
In line with the emerging BCP Local Plan objectives, the company says it will also support BCP’s strategy to build new homes on brownfield land, reducing pressure on the green belt. Churchill will continue to work with BCP in developing plans for the site. As well as meeting the urgent demand for new housing in Christchurch, the company says its plans will make a positive contribution to the local high street,
generating around £1.7million per year of extra spending in the town and creating around 30 permanent jobs locally. In addition, more than 360 jobs will be directly supported during the construction phase, both on site and through the wider supply chain. Spencer J McCarthy, Churchill’s Chairman & CEO, said: “This is a very different approach for Churchill and one of our most ambitious and exciting redevelopment projects to date.
“By delivering a mix of different housing types we are looking to transform the old gasworks site into an attractive new community for people of all ages, which in turn will create hundreds of new jobs, boost the local economy and support the local high street.” Cllr Nigel Brooks, BCP Member for Christchurch Regeneration, added: “The completion of the acquisition of the former gasworks site by Churchill is a key step forward to see this important redundant town centre site redeveloped for much-needed housing. “When taken together with the former Christchurch Civic Offices site next door, the whole area has an exceptional opportunity to create a desirable and vibrant ‘Quarter’ to this part of historic Christchurch.” The company says that a typical Churchill retirement development results in 90 moves further down the housing chain.

Their loved ones can also learn how best to benefit them.” More information on referrals to the Chris Page Centre is available at autismunlimited.org. Launch of ground-breaking autism centre Autism Unlimited is launching a new assessment and diagnosis centre in Christchurch. The Chris Page Centre (CPC), has been made possible by benefactor and former trustee Chris Page and is open for referrals from adults across the country, providing pre-assessment and diagnosis of autism. The centre can also provide adults, children and families with assistance through its Community Connect team, offering expertise, knowledge and practical information, as well as signposting to a host of other support services and organisations. Children get building for Science Week All the pupils at Witchampton First School, part of Wimborne Academy Trust, decamped to the village hall to mark Science Week – by building with Lego. With the theme of ‘growth’, the youngsters designed and created their own town which included houses, vehicles, roads, trains, airports and woods. There were 20,000 pieces of Lego available during the day that was organised by Bob Walker of Primary Workshop. Headteacher Jo Hancock said: “With the theme of ‘growth’ our children were able to grow their own town out of nothing. “They all loved building with Lego and it taught them many lessons including the importance of communication and collaboration. “The children designed and planned their parts of the creation and either on their own or with others built them. “It was fun to see the whole thing coming together and watching the children become totally absorbed in it.”
Platinum Award-Winning Care 2022
Liz West, CEO of Wimborne Academy Trust, said: “Science is an important subject and it’s crucial to introduce the subject as early as possible. “I’m sure that through the day the children learned a great deal without realising it.”

Walking is good in so many ways During the Pandemic, many of us rediscovered the simple act of walking – the oldest, cheapest and greenest transport there is. Walking kept us connected to ourselves and to others and helped us to stay healthy and happy. Walking is good for our minds, our bodies, and our cities, towns and villages. But lots of us still struggle with narrow, cluttered, uneven pavements, crossings that prioritise cars rather than people, and growing numbers of speeding vehicles. It doesn’t have to be like this. That’s why I support the demands Living Streets has made ahead of this year’s elections, calling on candidates to pledge to improve our streets for all,
cut air pollution and make walking easier and safer. Visit livingstreets.org.uk/ may22 for more info. Candidates must commit to set Vision Zero targets of significant reductions in people killed and injured on our roads. We call for commitments on default 20mph speed limits in built-up areas, improvements to our crossings and junctions and an increase in the number of low traffic neighbourhoods. One person killed on our roads is one too many. It is time we redesigned our streets around people, not cars. That way we can all enjoy the benefits of walking and build healthier, happier communities. Anthony L Morton-Jones

Let’s show our compassion for people of Ukraine
I’m writing to support the people of Ukraine, who are the unwilling victims of an unprovoked conflict in the heart of Europe. We cannot believe the fabrication of a despotic emperor addicted to the realms of power rattling his sword of Damocles, that has so far manifested into at least three violations of the Geneva convention, targeting medical facilities, civilian populations, and the
use of sub-munitions such as cluster bombs - war crimes in any language. Sanctions always harm the poorest in our societies, and tread the perilous path of isolationist politics. As always in conflict displacement the children suffer most; an eightyear-old boy walking 12 miles to the sanctuary of the Polish border in subzero temperatures. Let’s share our compassion in our safe
community on a practical approach, rather than one of sending them ‘lethal aid’. Check the internet for collection points around our area; formula milk, sterilization products, disposable nappies, whole foods, toys, cooking oil and possible accommodation for the refugees of warfare-and show our support to the people of Ukraine. Myk Hamilton
Thank you so much for your support Correction Julie and I at Caring Canines are hugely grateful to the New Stour & Avon for your support in our recruitment drive. To date we have had 11 calls from prospective members via the New Stour and Avon. We have processed six, with three in the pipeline - some were well out of our area (but thought it was worth asking) and I referred
them to the national charities - so hopefully they will join one or the other and share their dogs. Thank you so much for your help - it’s much appreciated by us and of course those people who will benefit from meeting our members and their dogs. Sue Dennett and Julie Lankshear
Sue Cook has asked us to point out that she is not vice-chairman of the Priest’s House Museum but of the Priest’s House Museum Collections Trust. She is a trustee of the Museum of East Dorset.

TV show prelude to reopening
Holiday fun with Felicity
Local charity visitor attraction Wimborne Model Town featured in Susan Calman’s Grand Day Out, pictured above, as a prelude to reopening for its 70th anniversary season at 10am on April 2. The programme highlighted miniature residents, The Wareham Bears, and a tour with Susan Calman inside
the 20-tonne 1/10th scale miniature Minster. Volunteers have been working hard over the winter months developing a new Model of the Model Town, an extended Crazy Golf layout and a refurbished home for the Wareham Bears. Manager Nick Clark said: “The Model Town is
marking seven decades of family fun with the position of the new mini-town reflecting our original lifesize location back in 1952.” A noisy opening is predicted with Chris Brown the Town Crier and members of the Wimborne Militia in attendance with Sir William and Lady Ali Hanham officiating.

Awards for Plea for drivers to give elderly a treat volunteers
by Faith Eckersall Two volunteers who have given 60 years of volunteering between them to Lewis-Manning Hospice Care have received awards from the High Sheriff of Dorset. Ann Deller has been regularly volunteering for, as well working with, LewisManning as a receptionist, and Robin Sherwood works as a driver, after volunteering following his early retirement as a bank manager. During a reception at Lewis-Manning in Poole’s Longfleet Road, both volunteers received the High Sherriff Award from Michael Dooley FRCOG in recognition of their ‘great and valuable services to the community’. CEO Clare Gallie said: “Ann has a quiet, warm empathy. “Her role is to greet patients and visitors as they arrive at the hospice and she is the first ‘face’ of Lewis-Manning that many people will see. “Robin is a much-valued member of our volunteer driver team, collecting patients from their homes and bringing them for their treatment and hospice sessions. The awards were made as part of the hospice’s 30th anniversary celebrations, which are being celebrated throughout 2022.

Residents Scrabble to test brains
Residents at Kings Park care home in Ferndown thoroughly enjoyed an afternoon of brain power and when ‘Scrabble Man Steve’ brought along his giant Scrabble board they were keen to settle down to an intense game. Playing in two teams, the game soon got serious and when one team played
‘cheque’ for 63 points, the pressure was on! Steve is great at encouraging the residents to come forward with their ideas and a deep conversation about the meanings and origins of words often occurs, which is a further part of the enjoyment of the activity. Although ‘cheque’ took one team to a substantial lead,
the other team soon caught up and the game ended with just one point between them! One resident, Pat, exclaimed how enjoyable the afternoon had been and said: “It is so interesting to look into the origin of words and phrases that we all use daily and Steve makes it such a fun afternoon!”

glistening olives to just-laid eggs and quirky quiches - were snapped-up. Some lucky visitors even had the
pleasure of meeting a rather cheeky red squirrel at the Dorset Wildlife Trust stall!

Children taking the cake
Inspired by their learning, pupils from St John’s Church of England First School in Wimborne organised a cake sale to raise money for Rainforest Trust UK. The sale, on the Minster green on March 5, was entirely on their own initiative. Two of the group are Minster choristers which enabled them to secure the location, where they raised the grand total of £155.
MPs’ round-up
Ukraine is proxy for war against Nato A special meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (COE) decided last week unanimously to expel Russia. The meeting was another unforgettable experience following on from President Zelensky’s address to the House of Commons. We heard from Ukrainian women MPs, some with young children, who had travelled from Kyiv to Strasbourg to seek our help. They spoke with conviction and emotion about the horrors of the war and the West’s collective failure to take action sooner. We were also joined by a male Ukrainian MP in combat uniform who spoke to us remotely from the front line. He received a standing ovation as did the Ukrainian Prime Minister. Too few seem to understand that an act of aggression is a crime against international
Christchurch & East Dorset CHRIS CHOPE law which activates the right to individual and collective self-defence. The Assembly accepted my plea on behalf of the Ukrainian delegation calling on all 46 countries which belong to the COE to engage in the collective selfdefence of Ukraine. I first became a member of the Assembly in 2005 and, since then, have witnessed not only the process of
continual appeasement but also the consequences which flow from giving in to Russian blackmail. Whether we like it or not, we are all in the war already. This is not just a war against Ukraine. Ukraine is the proxy for Putin’s war against Nato, the EU and the whole civilised world. This is why we urgently need to agree on how to respond to Putin’s nuclear blackmail because it will not stop with Ukraine. n The rising cost of energy bills consequent upon events in Ukraine was the hot topic at the Environmental Audit Committee. I asked the Treasury Minister, Helen Whately, why the Government is not responding to the crisis by maximising our own domestic production of natural gas, shale gas, oil and coal, thereby reducing dependency upon Russian oil and gas. ‘Net Zero’
targets are a monumental irrelevance to households struggling to pay energy bills. But the Treasury Minister persisted in praising the £5,000 taxpayer subsidy for heat pumps when the priority should surely be grants for better insulation and double glazing and removing Government taxes such as VAT on fuel. n By the time this article is published, the Chancellor of the Exchequer will have made his Spring Budget statement. As one of the MPs who has argued for the proposed National Insurance increase to be scrapped, I hope that the Chancellor will have done just this. We cannot be protected against the consequences of the war in Europe but the Chancellor can help by ensuring that the tax burden on individuals is reduced from its current record-high levels.

All you need to know about fostering a child
What qualities make a good foster carer? Empathy and good listening skills. Perseverance when things get tough. Flexibility and adaptability. Patience and good sense of humour. Stability and consistency in your personal and family life. An ability to offer sound and sensible and sensible boundaries. Can you foster alongside birth children? Yes, you can have your own and foster at the same time. Who can foster? Anyone can make an enquiry to become a foster carer, you can be single, married, co-habiting or in same sex relationships. Do I get payed? Foster carers are treated as professionals and are given payments that cover the costs of caring for children or young people on a day-to-day basis as well as a fee for their work.
How long does it take to become a foster carer? It can take up six months to be approved as a foster care, depending on your history and personal circumstance. Can I still work and be a foster carer? It is advisable that a foster carer is at home on a full-time basis. However, carers are able to work but with flexible hours in order to be available for meetings, regular training, support groups. Do I need to own my home? Foster carers can live in rented accommodation; Whatever your accommodation the fostering agency will make sure it meets safety standards and that there is room for the number of children you will be approved for. Can I foster if I have pets? Having pets will not prevent you from fostering, however, every animal is different, and your pets will need to have a good temperament. Animals, especially cats and dogs, can
act as a positive influence for a child when going to a foster carer’s home for the first time. Do I need specific qualifications to foster? No, you do not. When you are preparing to foster you will receive training to help you identify and build upon the skills you already have, and develop new skills needed to foster. Once a foster carer is approved then ongoing training is offered to support and develop your skills and knowledge. What support is available? We offer 24/7 support to our foster carers. There are various sources of ongoing support available to you as well. The most important will be your supervising social worker, a member of the team allocated to support and guide you through your fostering journey. Can a foster child share a bedroom with one of my own children? No, it is a requirement that a
foster child has their own bedroom. If I am an existing foster carer can I transfer? Any foster carer can move to another fostering provider and the process is streamlined to ensure it is not difficult to do. Can I choose the child’s age? You can decide on an age group that will match with you and your family circumstance. However, it is always useful to have an open mind and to look at the child, not their age, and then decide if you and your family can help them. Am I too old to foster? Age is really just a number when it comes to fostering. We are looking for people with life experiences and as long as you have the energy and desire to keep up with the people in your care, age is not a barrier. Come and join our information sessions on Tuesday, April 5. Enjoy a cup of tea and cake and enter into our prize draw on the day to win a Hotel Chocolat hamper.

Be a befriender to dementia sufferers and their carers Local charity Avon Valley Dementia Support (AVDS) has launched a new initiative to support those with dementia and their carers and is appealing for anyone who can spare a few hours a month to volunteer to help with this new service. The new Befrienders Scheme will make a huge difference for people with dementia as well as their carers in Fordingbridge, Ringwood, Verwood and surrounding
areas of the Avon Valley. Such simple activities as taking them out for a cup of tea or a walk or just chatting to them in their own home can help the person with dementia achieve purpose, pleasure, wellbeing, and friendship. It can also provide much-needed respite for the carer. The charity already runs a monthly pop-up Butterfly Café with lots of dementiafriendly activities and a
monthly Music for Memories Group in Fordingbridge. Co-founder Gilda Newsham said: “Since the Pandemic, many people are still reluctant to come back to the groups. Please join us, we take great care that every safety aspect as directed by the Government is in place.” Full, professional training on dementia and befriending will be given to anyone interested in becoming a befriender.
Any expenses will also be covered. The charity would also love to hear from anyone who may be interested in volunteering to become the befriender co-ordinator, to organise and oversee befriender rotas. I t is also seeking a new chairman of trustees to join its board. Telephone 01425 473777, email talktoAVDS@outlook. com or visit AvonValley DementiaSupport.org.
Care home takes a fun look at books
Residents and staff at a Dorset care home got well and truly into character as they celebrated the World Book Day annual celebration of reading. Hagrid from the Harry Potter stories and the hedgehog washerwoman Mrs TiggyWinkle from Beatrix Potter were among the literary favourites gracing a redcarpet catwalk at Colten Care’s Amberwood House in Ferndown. As each character appeared in costume for the parade, backed by clues to their identity given in song, assembled residents were invited to guess and shout out
their names. The laughter began immediately when Mrs Tiggy-Winkle, aka home manager Diane Nicholls, was misidentified by one audience member as Old Mother Hubbard. And on seeing companionship team leader Kirsty Richmond Cole dressed as Wally from the Where’s Wally books, several residents were invited to don the trademark hat and glasses too. Kirsty said: “We all got excited about picking these much-loved characters and finding outfits to dress up in to bring them to life. It
certainly sparked a lot of interest, with smiles and laughter all round.“ Companionship team member
and musical entertainer Rebecca Osborne was on the catwalk dressed as Minnie Mouse while the prize for the best costume – a hamper of pamper treats - went to housekeeper Diana Skee for wearing a head-to-toe ‘101 Dalmatians’ outfit. Kirsty added: “Most of our residents are pet lovers and were amazed she wasn’t too hot in all that get-up.” The day finished up with a quiz in which residents were invited to match a series of characters to the books that made them famous.

Wheels on fire at automotive auctions
The Charterhouse specialist auctions of classic and vintage motorcycles on March 9 and classic and vintage cars on March 3 were another huge success with the sales totalling over £800,000. “We have held several auctions at the prestigious Haynes International Motor Museum which is such a popular venue with excellent road and rail links. Not forgetting Bristol Airport which one successful buyer flew into and attended the motorcycle sale,” said Richard Bromell of Charterhouse. “However, for me, it was not only the auction totals which were great but also the fantastic selling rate of about 80% in both sales which was impressive.”
Top lot of the motorcycle auction was the 1962 AJS 7R sold on the hammer for £36,500.
A matching numbers bike, the petrol tank was specially made by the factory for Tommy Robb who has
verified that he rode the bike in period. It was also raced by in the ‘70s by Manx GP

ON THE ROAD AGAIN: From left, Daimler Dart SP250, Porsche Carrera Sport Targa, 1962 AJS 7R and 1961 Norton Manx 500
competitors Dave Hunt and Robert Hirst. Selling to a Hungarian collector was a brace of Norton Manx’s. First up at £30,000 was a 1961 Manx 500 followed by £20,000 for a 1960 Manx 350. This Hungarian collector, bidding live at the sale via the internet, also bought the beautifully-presented 1937 OK Supreme RCB 350 at £20,000, amongst other bikes. In the Charterhouse classic car auction, a 1989 Porsche Carrera Sport Targa sold for £36,000. From long term ownership it was painted in the classic Porsche colour of Guards Red. Also from long term ownership, but garage stored since the early 1970’s, was a 1960 Daimler Dart SP250. Now needing full restoration, there was huge pre-sale interest with the winning bidder paying £11,000 for the project. Fun choirs raise £660 for Ukraine appeal
The Vocal Fusion Choir has now changed its name to Vocal Fun Choir. In order to support the Ukraine appeal both choirs held ‘cake sales’ at their last two rehearsals, the ladies choir, right, on Monday, March 7, at St Nicholas Church Corfe Mullen and the mixed choir on Wednesday, March 9, at the Beacon Centre, Ferndown. As a result of the cake sales, the cakes were baked by members of both choirs, the combined total raised was £660.
It’s a wrap as children learn about ‘Scarf’ Children at Hayeswood First School in Wimborne took part in a ‘wear your scarf to school’ day’ as part of Children’s Mental Health Week. Safety, caring, achievement, resilience, friendship’ – or Scarf – are important themes in the school’s wellbeing and personal, social health and economic (PSHE) curriculum. The lessons focus on what children can do to keep themselves physically and mentally healthy. Andrew Turrall, executive headteacher, said: “On the day, children were invited to wear a
favourite scarf in school. “They took part in special activities to help them remember and celebrate Scarf’s important values. “We also used the day to raise funds for Dorset Mind, a local charity that educates, challenges mental health stigma and inequality, and promotes recovery by empowering individuals to develop resilience. “It is important that children’s mental health is considered alongside their physical health, and by educating them in their formative years it will help them through life.”

A historic business investing for the future One of the reasons the Douch family has been running businesses in Wimborne for more than a century is because it is constantly moving forward. Its latest step towards the future is the complete upgrading of its Douch & Small funeral directors building in the town. The Grade II-listed address in Leigh Road required updating so it was warm and welcoming, but also so it was practical. People often walk through the door when they are at their lowest, having lost a loved one, so the whole environment is important. The greeting from the staff as well as the décor and facilities can all help put a mind at rest and offer reassurance. Nick Douch, managing director of the business that has seven branches in east Dorset, said: “We have an ongoing programme of improvements and wholescale rebuilds.
“While funeral directors are often steeped in tradition, they must also move with the times and understand trends and changing priorities. “Our Wimborne branch presented difficulties as it is Grade II-listed, but we were able to make a huge difference to the interior. “It has been remodelled in sympathy with the historic architecture while offering a more modern look in some parts. “Practicality is of prime importance, especially when space is at a premium, and we’ve been able to enhance this aspect of the building. “We have a lovely reception area plus an intimate arranging room where we can speak in privacy and comfort to the families we serve.
“The chapel of rest has been completely upgraded and provides the best space possible for its role. “As well as a new kitchen, the offices in the upper parts have also been refurbished and it is from here where the team oversees all the other branches. “All the rooms now have continuity and flow to them. Beautiful coving has been reinstated and deep skirting and panelling have been added to enhance the Georgian features of the building.” Already the Lesley Shand branch in Corfe Mullen has benefited from a complete redevelopment, and the AE Jolliffe & Son branch in Ferndown is undergoing a similar reconstruction.

My top tips for improving your sleep
By Susie Carver, consulting hypnotherapist with Sea Change Hypnotherapy in Wimborne seachangehypno.com Sleep issues are one of my favourite things to work with. Who doesn’t appreciate better quality sleep? Statistics from the Sleep Charity show that 40% of adults and children experience problems with sleep... at a cost of £40.2bn to the UK economy because of issues arising from sleep deprivation! A lot can be done to improve sleep quality. It requires you to make a few changes to your lifestyle and put in consistent and sustained effort, but the benefits to your mental and physical health will be huge. Here are some of my top tips: Sleep when you are tired, not when you think you should. It’s important that we build up
‘sleep pressure’ - an increase of the chemical adenosine, which tells your brain how long you have been awake and when you should sleep. Cut out caffeine, or keep it to the mornings only. Caffeine mutes the sleep signal transmitted by adenosine, and has a half-life of around 5-7 hours. This means that only 50% of the caffeine you
consume will be removed from your body in this time, so it’s best kept to the early part of the day or removed entirely. Although naps have many benefits, they are best kept to less than 20 minutes a day and only before 3pm. Cut them out completely if you have problems getting to sleep or staying asleep - this helps build up sleep pressure. Keep to a regular sleep schedule and you will train your body to fall asleep and wake at the same time each day. This includes keeping the same get-up time at weekends and days off... lie-ins are actually quite ineffective! Remove all clocks and mobile phones from your bedroom. If you wake in the night and look at the time you will focus on how long you have to go until the morning. Guess what? You will stay awake!
If you wake and cannot go back to sleep, get up. Go to another room and do a calming activity like reading until you feel tired. Your bedroom should be the place your mind associates with being asleep not with being awake! Get out into natural daylight first thing in the morning, for at least 20 minutes. This helps reset your circadian rhythm (your internal body clock), providing better sleep and mental and physical health. In my practice I use hypnotherapy to help clients learn how to switch off anxious feelings and access a place of comfort at bedtime. So many sleep issues arise from anxiety, and when combined with a programme incorporating the above tips hypnotherapy can help restore a quality sleep cycle and all the associated health benefits.
Why time is on your side It’s common for people to ask me, ‘how much exercise should I do?’. If you’re short on time, a better way to frame this question is actually, ‘how little do I need to do to make a difference?’ This is where I have positive news for you, as it’s really not very much. If you’re a bit exercise phobic, the truth is you probably need to do a bit more than you want to, but probably nowhere near as much as you think you do. Lack of time is one of the biggest barriers to getting fitter. What you’re really looking for is the minimum effective dose; the smallest amount you need to do to get a health benefit. We’re very good at feeding ourselves the idea that if we can’t work out for several
full hours a week then it’s just not worth it. However, the evidence seems to suggest otherwise. The British Journal of Sports Medicine found that 30 minutes of strength training just once a week reduces the risk of many health issues. A separate review of over a dozen international studies reports that between 30 and 60 minutes a week of strength training reduces the risk of early death by up to 20 per cent. The big takeaway news from these studies is that even if you just manage one session a week, it is going to have huge health and longevity benefits. Another way to think of risk and benefits is through the idea of microlives. These are half-hour units of life expectancy that are
reduced or increased through our lifestyle and used in lifestyle risk assessments. For example, two hours of being sedentary is minus one microlife (so 30 minutes) and drinking coffee is one additional microlife (hooray!). According to this approach, exercise for the first 20 minutes gives us an extra two microlives (so one hour), but the benefits of subsequent, additional 40 minutes of exercise, the benefits are still there, but they lessen. Twice as much isn’t always twice as good. I’m not telling you this to put you off exercising more, but it should be heartening for those that aren’t keen, time poor or unable to take exercise in large doses. Likewise, I’m not saying that you’re not busy, and I’m not

I always say, if you live in East Dorset, you’d better enjoy it, as our life expectancy is pretty good, it could be a long, slow ride otherwise!

Health & Wellbeing Spring has finally sprung! The signal for many of us to do a spring clean in our homes but what about on ourselves? Many of us use the same skincare year-round - that’s fine but the change in season can bring changes to our skin. In the winter, skin can become dry, itchy and even dehydrated, often from central heating. In the warmer weather, our skin may not feel as though it needs as much moisturiser as it can become oily in the heat. However, air conditioning can also make skin feel dry and tight. The one thing that should remain consistent throughout the year is the use of daily SPF. As the sun is on its way, getting back into the habit of using it if you’ve been lax is an important reminder. Ideally, our skin should be able to adjust naturally to seasonal changes without the addition of ultra- nourishing moisturiser in the winter and then the need to switch to a light moisturiser in the warmer months. Unfortunately, our skin doesn’t always function as it should. It’s a frightening fact that environmental factors,

primarily ultraviolet (UV) radiation and the use of inappropriate skin products are responsible for up to 80% of skin ageing and unhealthy skin. Age only contributes to around 20% of ageing! Chronic exposure to the sun’s UV rays as well as use of chemical irritants on the skin such as soaps and perfumes give rise to specific changes in the skin. These can be: Rough texture Small capillary blood vessels Uneven pigmentation Lines and wrinkles Dryness/oiliness And these are just the effects that you can see and feel!
There’s a lot more damage going on under the surface! Traditional skincare and cosmetics focus more on beautifying the skin and improving the ‘appearance’ of ageing, whereas dermacosmeceuticals focus on improving ageing skin while stimulating and focusing on skin health. Although dry skin may need some help with moisture, the cycle we create means the more moisturiser applied, the more dehydrated the skin becomes, thus needing a richer moisturiser and creating a negative skincare cycle. This is where cosmeceutical

Walk a short distance north down the hill until you come to the footpath on your right leading to the Church (which is usually closed). Exit the Churchyard via the gate onto the road then head north along the B3092. The road winds a bit so take care to be on the side with best visibility. After ¾ of a mile you’ll come to a road on your right heading east for a mile, heading for the large mound on the horizon, Duncliffe Hill... your target. moisturisers differ by reeducating the skin and enabling it to restructure rather than masking the problem. With so many products and skin treatments available it’s no wonder we sometimes get lost on what we should or shouldn’t be using on our skin. That’s where having a consultation with a skin professional is really valuable. It will help you understand your skin better by looking closely at what products you use and how to improve your skin routine. You and your skincare expert can work together on a treatment and/or homecare plan that is realistic and works for you - whatever the season.

leading into a plantation. You will now notice that you’re going up. Soon you’ll join the bridleway continuing eastwards up and up through Duncliffe Wood. You may notice a bank and ditch to your right. This is because you’ve strayed into East Stour and it’s the parish boundary. Eventually you get to the very top where there’s a trig point which must have been placed there before the trees grew up as the purpose of a trig point is to be visible from others for trigonometric mapping.
There are magnificent views over the Vale. After a while the bridleway swings right and takes you downhill to the south east where you meet a road that takes you south west through the hamlet of Stour Row, where there’s another small Church. Unusually it has a bell mounted outside in the graveyard. At the next junction turn right, north, for 500 yards then turn left, west, for a mile and a half to take you back to the village. On the way you’ll pass through Woodville and the village school dated from 1850. When you get back to the village cross roads, near where you parked, continue westwards down a hill then swing to the right to see the Stour and a mill where there’s been one since before the Domesday Book! By now you’ll have walked about 7 miles so go back to your car.

Make the tidal flow work for you Just like the tide, life ebbs and flows. My work as a coach is all about helping people through life, which means both the good and the bad. Helping people to strive to achieve more than they could ever imagine, whilst tackling some of the things that get in the way and hold us back, such as self-doubt, lack of confidence, overwhelm, etc. We all know that sometimes life is incredibly difficult, we can find ourselves immersed in traumatic or challenging times. We can feel lethargic, unproductive and sometimes downright miserable. And yet at the other end of the scale we can sometimes find that we are ‘on fire’, flowing with energy, vitality, and life can seem light and good. Our moods, emotions and
feelings change, but our body and soul remain a constant. Ideally, we would always be in some form of flow, but we know that life doesn’t always give us what we want, so we have to be prepared for the ebbs too. It’s helpful to be able to recognise those ebbs and work out how you can minimise them and find yourself in flow more often. When did you last truly feel like you were in flow? When everything felt like it was buzzing with goodness and you caught yourself in a moment and thought: ‘I feel good right now.’ Was it last week? Last month? A year ago? If you can remember a time, then what was it that was going on that made you feel energised and full of life? How can you sustain that
feeling? Or if it’s slipped, how could you recreate it? What more could you do right now to keep yourself in flow? If you can’t remember a time when you were in flow, then perhaps ask yourself… What’s going on for me right now? What’s holding me back? What’s making me feel out of kilter? Why am I stuck? Sometimes it can just be a case of hunkering down and letting the feelings pass, but only you know what’s going on inside and what’s blocking you from moving forward. Have a think, what one thing could you do to make you feel a little more energised? There may be a misconception that if life is feeling good and you are in flow, then coaching wouldn’t help you. That’s where you would be
n Victoria Arnold is a life coach from Wimborne Victoriaarnold.co.uk wrong, for you would benefit from coaching whether you’re in ebb or flow. If you’re in flow, then what better time to have coaching – just think of what you could achieve when you are in a great positive mindset! And if you’re stuck, something’s holding you back or you’re low and unproductive, then coaching will unpack what’s behind that, start moving you forward and reignite your spark. “It is true there is ebb and flow, but the sea remains the sea.”
IS MASSAGE SIMPLY A TREAT? Are there any real benefits to getting a massage?
Over the last 2 years, I have sadly noticed a huge increase in clients' anxiety levels, and a general feeling of despair. The term 'me time' is thrown around a lot and we tend to think of reading a book, having a bubble bath etc, which are all essential, but what about an holistic treatment? Did you know that massage can: Improve sleep, help with anxiety, break down fibrostic nodules known as 'knots', increase energy levels, release endorphins, relieving pain and feelings of depression, stimulate immunity and detoxification of the body, improve posture, increase flexibility, increase supply of oxygen to the brain, helping relieve mental fatigue, promote clearer thinking and improve concentration, relax muscle/nerve fibres, relieving muscle tension and fatigue…. To name just a few. Massage can mean so much more than just time out from a chaotic lifestyle. During lockdown, I used the time to study and qualify in reflexology. Reflexology uses points on the feet to treat the whole body. By applying pressure to areas on the feet, the whole body can be brought back into balance. This works on the theory that the feet are a map of the body and all its' systems. Imbalances in the body can be detected and then worked on to help correct them. Reflexology can also be carried out on the hands and face. I have created a 'combo' a combination of a back massage followed by a reflexology treatment. The session lasts one and a half hours, and has proved to be very popular. All my treatments are tailored to the needs of the individual and follow a short consultation to assess these needs.

Hannah’s Horticulture...
April brings plenty of exciting times in the garden, as buds continue to emerge, birds begin in earnest to pair up and begin nesting, and the blossoms of spring are well under way. At the farm we have had another busy month – amongst other things we have been planting our seed potatoes, sowing seeds, putting in a couple of peach trees and making a start on the new perennial fruit area where we will have strawberries, raspberries, loganberries, rhubarb, currants and asparagus. We also have been desperately trying to weed the beds in the sensory garden ready for new plantings. We are plagued by couch grass and creeping thistle which means a lot of repeated digging to remove every last scrap of root! So, what horticultural therapy can you be doing in April? Sow vegetable seeds, and annuals & wildflowers direct Courgettes, cucumber, beans and peas, parsnip, carrots, beetroot, early salad crops and later in the month sweet corn, are all best sown now, either in modules or direct in the ground. If you haven’t put in tomatoes and peppers yet, the beginning of the month is just about okay to make a sowing. April is also the time to sow any wildflowers and annuals direct in the beds – such as cosmos, calendula, love-in-amist etc Weeding! Keep on top of weeds as they emerge and before they seed – it will pay dividends as your workload will be greatly reduced later on! I like to leave any stray dandelion flowers as they are such valuable early nectar for bees and pollinators – just remove the seedheads before they
mature to stop a mass seeding. Slug control! Protect seedlings and emerging susceptible perennials from slug and snail attacks.
Hostas, delphiniums, Echinacea, and some phlox are all particularly tasty. Organic methods of control work well, and there are several options. Remember, if you see a leopard slug, these are your friends as they eat other slugs! Sow sweet peas & sunflowers These timeless classics are great for children and adults alike, and are a great way to introduce children to gardening. How many of us have fond childhood memories of growing these with mum and dad or nan and grandad?! If you have children or grandchildren, you could even have a little competition between you to see who grows the tallest sunflower which is a lovely bonding activity and teaches children care and maintenance of plants. Cut away unwanted suckers growing around the base of trees & shrubs These sap energy from the crown, or top of the tree where you want the leaves, and look unsightly. Prune hydrangeas Cut back the old stems and flower heads to a healthy new shoot. If the plant is congested or old, thin out (remove entirely) a third of the oldest stems to allow light and air in and create a better framework and a more handsome bush. Visit some lovely spring gardens for a bit of R & R There are some gorgeous spring gardens around for
inspiration and relaxation – so make the most of some ‘garden bathing’. I am writing this from the RHS Health and Horticulture conference held at Wisley. It has been such an invigorating conference so far, made all the better for being in stunning surroundings. The science all points to scents, phenols released by plants and insects, gentle physical activity
moving hormones, blood, and toxins through the body, and the act of ‘getting away’ being super good for health and wellbeing, physiologically,

Responding to changing times
Most of us love to have a snoop around others’ homes as the show Through The Keyhole’s success attests to. Never been one for rubbernecking fellow shoppers’ trolleys in the supermarket, my weaknesses are writing desks and bookcases. On Pinterest you can satisfy your curiosity with Desks And Offices Of Famous People by ‘Kevbeaux’ but for the time being you’ll have to make do with my cluttered writing desk! There is a Spanish saying, ‘All you need is a garden, a kitchen and a library’. I don’t have a library but a desk piled with books is close enough. It’s not a desk with a beautiful view like you see advertised in Writers Retreats, it’s the former bedroom of our sons (who now have their own
bedrooms) so the walls are full of memories of singing them to sleep. It’s my bedroom now, painted pink and with meditational images instead of the superheroes. The nursery becomes a study and, maybe later, the study has to be used as a bedroom for an ageing parent.

Cooking... White Chocolate and Raspberry Muffins: I am lucky enough to belong to a ladies-only gym in Wimborne. (They do allow men in, but at separate times to the women! The men don’t like the competition!) I have been a member for about 18 months, and it is the only gym I have been to, where size, age and body shape doesn’t matter. I am short and dumpty and have a muffin top, I don’t have designer gym wear, I can’t stand on one foot for the stretching! But there is no judgement in this gym. We are all encouraged to do our best. But it’s more than just a gym. We have such a laugh, we put the world to rights, discuss all manner of things. If there is something bothering you, we can talk it out and help each other. I really look forward to my twice-weekly sessions. (You can go more
with Martha Legg
but I am not that dedicated.) It has really helped me through difficult times, and made me fitter as well. When I first started, I struggled to pick my grandchildren up, now I can do it with ease. I am never going to be a size 10 again, I like all the food that is bad for me, but there is no telling off from the trainers, they just encourage you to work harder!! So I took these muffins for the ladies who run the gym, who loved the naughtiness of the white chocolate and decided
that the raspberries were part of their five a day! Wow! Thank you ladies, for keeping my mind and body together!! Ingredients: 300g self-raising flour 165g caster sugar 1 egg (large) 50g vegetable oil 250g milk 25g raspberries fresh or frozen 100g white chocolate chunks or chips Method Preheat oven to 180C Line a 12-hole muffin tin with paper cases
Sift the self-raising flour into a large bowl Add the caster sugar and stir together Create a well in the centre of the dry mixture In a separate bowl, lightly beat the egg then add vegetable oil and milk and whisking together until well combined Pour the liquid ingredients into the well in the dry ingredients, and very gently fold the mixture together. The batter should be slightly lumpy; do not over-mix. Very gently fold through the raspberries and white chocolate chunks; do not overmix. Spoon the mixture into the paper cases, filling ⅔ to the top. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until lightly golden. Allow to cool in the baking tray for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Riding on the watercress of a wave! by Lorraine Gibson With longer, warmer days on the horizon and al fresco dining finally a possibility, embrace the sunny season with lighter, brighter dishes, swapping limp lettuce and boring burgers for healthy dishes that still look and taste indulgent. Quick, easy meals using fish, plants and leaner cuts of meat are the order of the day and with British watercress coming into season, you can even get smug about helping reduce the carbon footprint since it’s freshly harvested on farms right here in Dorset and Hampshire. As well as tasting and looking good, this endlesslyversatile little leaf has a fascinating back story. It’s still grown in the traditional – and only – way, in flowing spring water that runs through unique, Victorian watercress beds. In fact, so fascinating is the growing method for the peppery plant that it has a huge following and even its own festival! Traditionally, about 15,000 people pitch up at Arlesford in Hampshire for the annual Watercress Festival and having been deprived of the slightly bonkers celebration for the last couple of years, they reckon this year’s event will be bigger than ever! It’s one of the healthiest vegetables around, packed with more than 50 vital vitamins and minerals with more vitamin C than an orange, more folate than a banana, more vitamin E than broccoli and more calcium than milk. The festival is on May 15 watercress festival.org but if you can’t wait, here’s one tasty recipe: Sea Bass Fattoush with Watercress, Tomato,
Radish, Cucumber, Pitta Chips & Creamy Yoghurt Dressing Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 5 minutes Serves 2 Ingredients 2 Sea bass fillets 1 Pitta bread 85g watercress 1 large tomato, chopped A few radishes, finely sliced ¼ cucumber, finely sliced Parsley leaves, chopped Olive oil For the dressing: 3tbsp natural yoghurt 1tbsp olive oil A few mint leaves, roughly chopped 1tsp lemon juice (optional) Garlic clove, minced Method Start by making the dressing: simply combine all ingredients in a bowl and set aside. To make pitta chips, roughly chop a pitta bread into chunks. Heat some oil in a pan, enough to cover the base. Once hot, shallow fry the pitta chunks for a couple of minutes each side until
golden brown. Tip them onto some kitchen paper to soak up any remaining oil and set aside to cool. Pan-sear the sea bass skinside down for a few minutes, until it gets some colour. Flip it and cook for a further couple of minutes until
cooked through. Assemble the watercress, tomato, radish and cucumber on a plate. Add pitta chips and sprinkle with parsley. Place the sea bass fillet on top and drizzle everything with the creamy yoghurt dressing.

Arts & Entertainments REVIEW Private Lives, Lighthouse by Hilary Porter What a joy to be taken on this riotous romp through Noel Coward’s enduring comedy about marriage with dazzling performances by Nigel Havers and Patricia Hodge. We witnessed an extraordinary night of theatre as they brought this quickwitted farce to life more than 90 years since its original production. The tempo was fast paced, the words copious and incisive, as the fine line between love and hate, passion and repulsion was brutally explored. Raising many questions about love and friendship between husband a wife it was all highly entertaining if sometimes vitriolic as it debated the validity of unbridled passion with all its fireworks, as opposed to something far more comfortable, reliable, and safe. Extraordinary night of theatre
RIOTOUS: Patricia Hodge and Nigel Havers in Private Lives
Incredibly this was Haver’s first time in a Coward play but boy was he born for it! Aged 70 whilst remarkably Patricia Hodge is 75, they are double the age Coward wrote Elyot and Amanda to be and rather old for a runaway romance with old flames as they abandon their new spouses in a Deauville hotel on their honeymoons – but age doesn’t matter at all. Balcony cocktails, romantic serenades and unbridled passions quickly overrun into vase flinging and throwing of fists after they run off to Paris together and age seems immaterial in these matters. The comedy is so wonderfully written and masterfully timed and delivered by the pair with endless laughter but the best moment was when
the reunited duo cuddle passionately on a sofa only for Amanda to brush off his fervour as it’s ‘too soon after lunch’ and the angered Elyot almost falls over with a leg cramp. When their abandoned new spouses Sibyl and Victor arrive it eases tensions as it rolls into an unadulterated farce. The
course of true love bever runs smooth as Victor (Dugald Bruce-Lockhart) and Sibyl ( Natalie Walter) also suffer sudden character transformations eventually raging against each other only for Amanda and Elyot to silently slip away in horror or seeing a replay of their own relationship. A brilliant production.

Little Shop show looks set to be a big hit
by Lorraine Gibson Never in their wildest dreams could members of the Wimborne Musical Theatre Society (WMTS) have imagined that one day they’d be talking to a plant, but that’s exactly what they’ve been doing during rehearsals for their performance of Little Shop Of Horrors. And for Duncan Sayers who plays poor florist’s assistant, Seymour, the plant in question not only answers back, it sings, too! Sylvia Walpole, WMTS Chairman said: “We have had animals, dogs in Anything Goes and The Wizard Of Oz, and children in The King And I, but this is a first. “You would think that the good thing would be that a plant couldn’t answer back, but this plant, called Audrey II, certainly can. “We are having great fun rehearsing this show and we can’t wait to get on stage to perform it to live audiences.” The story follows lead protagonists, Seymour and Audrey, a fellow shop
assistant, with whom Seymour is secretly in love. His craving for fame and fortune and his love of Audrey, seduce him into nurturing a very unusual plant and the ensuing action surrounding the feisty flower’s growing demands is accompanied by brilliant and witty parodies of 60s-influenced music - think takes on
rock ‘n’ roll, doo-wop, and Motown. As the plot evolves, the mysterious Audrey II, shocks everyone! Tivoli, Wimborne. Thursday 7, 8, 9 April 7, 8 and 9, 7.30pm plus a 2.30pm Saturday matinee. Tickets cost £16 adults/£14 Senior Citizens and under 16s. Visit tivoliwimborne.co.uk or call the box office on 01202 885566.

Easter story comes to life at St Mary’s
The greatest story ever told is true! What’s more a team of talented thespians are planning a free, live retelling of The Passion Drama – the last few days of the human life of Jesus – this Easter, at 11am on Good Friday, April 15. Churches Together in Fordingbridge and District, a collective of multidenominational faith groups and Churches in the area, will perform The Easter Story on an open-air stage in St Mary’s churchyard in Fordingbridge. The play will last about an hour, covering the story of the Last Supper
through to the Crucifixion and Resurrection. The drama is closely based on the Biblical narrative and has been especially written by local Fordingbridge author, Jeremy Houghton-Brown, pictured, who is also involved as a producer. Jeremy said: “The Easter Story has such an important message for us all, and an openair drama takes the story to the people; so I thought ‘let’s be positive and do it now!’ “This message of love and hope is for all people, wherever they are in life’s journey.” Revd Tom Burden, of the Avon Valley Parish, is working with
Jeremy and will oversee the direction. A cast of more than 50 local amateurs, all in costume, will be joined by musicians and a combined choir led by Canon Gary Philbrick, Rector of Avon Valley Churches. The play opens with The Last Supper and follows the arrest and trials of Jesus to their end. The drama picks up the story, as told by the ‘ladies from Galilee’, as they work at home preparing the perfumed balms to anoint the body of Jesus in the tomb. This then leads naturally to the jubilation following the wonderful discovery at the tomb, on the very first Easter morning, as they realise and rejoice in the glorious fact that Jesus has risen from the dead. So, there is life after death and a heaven to which we can aspire. All are welcome to The Easter Story; there will be no entrance charge. Free refreshments will also be available. If the weather proves unkind, the play will be performed inside St Mary’s Church. Visit AvonValleyChurches.org.uk.

You can bank on fabulous festival fun by Lorraine Gibson It may be 14 years since Rob da Bank and his wife Josie staged their first Camp Bestival at Lulworth but he admits that he still gets a huge kick from those first glimpses of the castle as he arrives. “As we get towards Lulworth, it’s always a beautiful sight and we can’t wait to get to the beach for a swim. “For me, it always feels like coming on holiday and we’re delighted to be coming back to Dorset again this year.” Rob and Josie have four boys, Arlo, Merlin, Miller and Ely and as we chat we discover that a couple of our children are similar ages so we have equally-similar family memories of ‘Camp Besti’ over the years. Like dressing up with as much gusto as the kids, or hoisting them up to see Mr. Tumble and their being so tired from the activities that
they’d be literally dropping come (inflatable) bed-time. Some parents say their kids sleep better at CB than they do at home. Rob and Josie were already running a music festival when they discovered their ‘castle in a field’. “We’d been running Bestival but we went to Big Chill Dorset and it was at Lulworth,” he says. “We thought it would be a great place for a family festival. “Having kids was the reason we set up Camp Bestival, we wanted something a bit more child-friendly.” He adds: “That’s not to say a boring thing with screaming kids, anything but, it’s always been a place where grownups have as much fun as the children. “So, we rang the owner, James Weld and he was bang up for it. “Over the years there have
been so many highlights, Chuck Berry, PJ Harvey, Florence and the Machine,” says Rob, “but the main one is still walking round the fields and seeing everyone so happy. No parents shouting at children, just good vibes.” Tickets for the four-day event are selling fast and, surprisingly, Rob says that almost 50 per cent of attendees now book boutique camping. That’s a hefty chunk but, aftermath of covid restrictions on travel aside, Rob has a theory. “People are doing less festivals so the ones they do, they seem to want to do well. “That doesn’t mean you need to spend a lot of money. Other people prefer to turn up, get stuck in and they have just as good a time. That’s what I love about it.” This year’s theme is Desert Island Disco, so don your
satin flares and lurex top for a line-up that includes the holy trinity of disco - Sister Sledge, Earth, Wind & Fire Experience and Kool and the Gang. If you’re more blues and bass than boogie, head for Rag ‘n’ Bone man and Rudimental. Attractions reflect Camp Bestival’s eclecticism. “We have the Wall of Death and the tree climbing and new attractions,” says Rob. “The mad stunts in Extreme Bike Battles will be spectacular, but the most exciting thing will be the Guinness world record big disco-dance challenge.” Crowds will become the show as they join together to create the record for the world’s biggest disco. “I can’t wait for that,” says the big kid at heart. The festival takes place from July 28 to 31. dorset.campbestival.net

Ready to get back in the Abbey habit?
by Lorraine Gibson I say old bean, tighten my stays, pass my pearls and inform the chauffeur that I need to get to hot-foot it to Christchurch to see the latest talking picture. Yes, rejoice Downton Abbey fans - the avidly-anticipated sequel, Downton Abbey: A New Era, will stroll elegantly on to the silver screen with an added touch of ooh-la-la, at the Regent Centre on its national release date, Friday, April 29. Penned by Academy Award-winner, Julian Fellowes of course, the new film sees the aristocratic Crawleys embark on a grand tour to the South of France to uncover - with shades of Agatha Christie - the mystery of the dowager countess’s newly-inherited villa. All the favourites are on board, including Dame Maggie Smith (Countess of Grantham), Hugh Bonneville (Earl of Grantham) and Jim Carter (Mr Bates), with new additions Hugh Dancy, Laura Haddock, Nathalie Baye and Dominic West. Aware of accusations of cheesiness (which, by the way have zero impact on Downton’s fans), Fellowes is unapologetic, telling People magazine: “It’s an unashamedly feel-good movie. I like the idea that people go into the
movie and have a great two hours and then go out to have dinner. “That seems to me to be a good thing. If we are useful for cheering people up and giving them an easy time of it, that doesn’t bother me.” The Regent Centre bagged the award for No.1 cinema in the UK for sales of the first Downton Abbey film, staging an unprecedented 52 screenings and welcoming more than 12,700 cinemagoers, to make it the bestselling film in the theatre’s 90-year history.
They also received a personal thankyou from Universal Studios and were mentioned in despatches at their Hollywood HQ! No doubt Downton devotees will come in their droves for what’s guaranteed to be two hours of fun, finery and firstclass escapism! No less than 58 screenings will run up until Thursday, 19 May. Tickets are £7.50, with concessions at £7.00. Visit regentcentre.co.uk or call the box office on 01202 499199.

Lose yourself in a timely mind warp
by Hilary Porter It’s a far cry from his days as a Dorset rugby player. But Ore Oduba is thrilled to be pulling on the corset and fishnets once more to head the cast of Richard O’Brien’s legendary Rocky Horror Show. The actor, presenter and winner of Strictly Come Dancing is at Lighthouse, Poole, from Monday, March 28, to Saturday, April 2. It is a welcome return to home turf for Dorset’s multitalented star who grew up in Wimborne, went to Canford School and was a winger for Bournemouth Rugby Club. Ore, 35, delighted audiences and received rave reviews as Brad Majors on tour last year, so is thrilled to be back on stage: “I’m so excited to be extending my stay with our amazing Rocky family. “Truth is, when you know how it feels to wear a corset and heels it’s very hard to take them off – at least it is in my case! “It has been a wild ride so far, the audiences have been
incredible, and I can’t wait to Time Warp around even more corners of the country.” This musical extravaganza has been playing to packed houses as it tours the length and breadth of the UK with a stellar cast that is showing no signs of slowing down. Theatre is in full throttle and this extraordinary cast is ready to deliver a guaranteed party not to be missed. Since it first opened in London in June 1973 at the Royal Court’s Theatre Upstairs, Rocky Horror Show has become the world’s favourite rock ‘n’ roll musical, having been performed worldwide for more than 45 years in more than 30 countries and translated into 20 languages. Directed by Christopher Luscombe, its musical numbers include Sweet Transvestite, Science Fiction/ Double Feature, Dammit Janet and, of course, the timeless floor-filler, The Time-Warp. Ore believes it is just the tonic we need: “Theatregoers
are gagging for a great night out. They’re desperate and clawing at the walls, and this show is the perfect remedy to everything we’ve all been through. “People want to laugh and be uplifted and to be able to forget about everything for a couple of hours. It’s all about ‘Leave your inhibitions at the door - we haven’t got time for that’”. In the risqué and riotously funny show, Ore plays squeaky-clean Brad Majors - who, along with his fiancée Janet Weiss, inadvertently cross paths with mad scientist Frank-N-Furter and his bunch of outrageous followers. Cue fun, frolics, frocks and frivolity, classic songs and Oduba in various states of undress. The dad of two was quick to say yes when the offer to play Brad came in but did consult with his wife first. “It’s such an iconic show and so well-loved,” says the man who has been married to TV researcher Portia since 2015,
“but I thought ‘I wonder what my wife is going to say about audiences seeing me in stockings?’. “I needn’t have worried because what I’d forgotten is that Rocky Horror is one of her and her family’s favourite shows of all time. She was beside herself,” Ore laughs. “She also started chuckling at the idea of me being on stage in just my briefs for the early part of the show, then coming out later in stockings and high heels.” So can he relate to the nerdy character whose visit to Frank-N-Furter’s castle proves to be an inhibitionshedding experience? “I think there’s a lot of Brad in me and in a lot of people,” he admits. “It’s the idea of being kind of caged animals, because we all have a lot of reservations and inhibitions and things we hold back. We’re just waiting to be unleashed.” Tickets & information from 01202 280000. lighthousepoole.co.uk.

A day at the farm
with Tiffany Fleming
Tiffany Fleming is a volunteer at High Mead Farm in Longham, Ferndown. High Mead Farm is a working farm run to promote the benefits of engaging with animals, soil, and nature. They ‘create purposeful roles for our cofarmers, young people and adults alike, to help bring about a sense of wellbeing and self-worth that many have never experienced before’. March at High Mead was as busy as February was windy! We had organised visits from Esol (English for Speakers of Other Languages) a course run by Bournemouth and Poole College to help people who are settled and living in the UK to improve their English language. The group included refugees and asylum seekers of various nationalities and it was lovely to see how excited they were to spend
time with the animals and to hear them putting their language skills to the test. We also had two farm tours from the ladies’ section of Ferndown Golf Club who got to see the farm at work on a wet and windy Saturday, and a very busy weekday session. As the Ladies’ Captain’s chosen charity for the year, we are very much enjoying our partnership with the club. Bournemouth and
Dorset South Beekeepers Association is hosting its Wannabee Day with us on Saturday, April 9, starting at 9.30am. Its purpose is to introduce beekeeping to people who think they might want to keep bees or are just interested in learning more about bees. The £40.00 enrolment fee includes associate membership until the end of September. Anyone interested should contact Anne Moran
at membership@bads-bka. org. The Dorset chairman kindly donated four footstool upholstery kits, so some of our Co-Farmers could try their hand at the art of upholstery. He also gave up his time to deliver the workshop in person – thank you, Alan! Fernside Dementia Care Home in Longham visited to present us with a cheque for £156 and we were also gifted

Rugby team in hospice boost HIGH FLIERS: Bradley Slater and Dougie Goulding
Fly fishers’ spring season comes to life What a great start to the spring season as the Poole and Wimborne Fly Fishers made the short hop over to to Damerham Trout Fishery near Fordingbridge. Early rain soon gave way to brilliant sunshine and there was a real sense of the season changing to spring. The fish were eager to challenge with some great fighting rainbows as well as the famous Damerham Blue Trout giving an excellent account of themselves. The fish were particularly interested in smaller flies and many fell to stalking bugs and buzzers. There was some stiff competition but the winning pair was Bradley Slater and Dougie Goulding with a combined eight fish bag of 22lb 9oz. Superb conditions, a perfect venue and those fantastic fighting trout... a wonderful day’s sport.

Business awards are coming to town
Christchurch businesses are to be the latest to have their successes trumpeted with the launch of the town’s new business awards. Entries are now open for the inaugural Christchurch Business Awards after their launch at the Captain’s Club Hotel. Fourteen business categories – plus an Overall Business of the Year – are up for grabs. Entry is free via the dedicated website with a closing date of Monday, May 16, at 2pm. The awards ceremony is on Tuesday, June 28. Launching the awards, organiser Nigel Reeve, of MW Events, said: “Our focus is on the quality and range of local businesses, giving them a chance to gain recognition and promote themselves. “The awards are a celebration but not an excuse for a party. “The focus is on the entries and not the event.”
Local Artisans and Produce New Business of the Year Outstanding Community Support Professional Services Business Retail Business of the Year Overall Business of the Year
Andrew Diprose is the founder and editor of dorsetbiznews.co.uk, the No.1 business website in the county with more than 25,000 unique users The award categories are: Best Place to Work Best Use of Innovation Café, Pub, Casual Dining, Entertainment Excellence in Customer Service Employee of the Year Green/Eco-Business of the Year Family Business of The Year Health, Beauty and Fitness Independent Business of the Year
Businesses can enter as many categories as they wish. People can also nominate businesses they believe deserve an award. The Christchurch Business Awards are supported by Christchurch Business Improvement District (Bid). Christina Pengelly, Bid manager, said: “We’re really excited to be part of the new awards. “We hope they become an annual event, both celebrating and highlighting the fantastic range of businesses we have in the Christchurch area.” The Christchurch Business Awards are the latest in a series of successful local
business awards across Dorset, organised by MW Events. They include Bournemouth, Poole, Wimborne, Dorchester/Poundbury, Sherborne, Weymouth, Bridport and Lyme Regis. Nigel said: “We started these awards to promote local business, after the damage done by Covid. “I was very, very frustrated at the negative news coverage during lockdown and the effect it was having on businesses. “We began in Bridport with 32 entries and have grown ever since. “We’re now averaging 250 entries per awards. “These really are grassroots awards and I’m delighted to bring them to Christchurch.” For more information about becoming a category sponsor, email networking@ marketingwest.co.uk christchurchbusinessawards. co.uk.

A retailer of nutrition products and accessories for the endurance sports market has hit the expansion trail with a key acquisition. Wimborne-based XMiles UK has acquired Energy Snacks, a supplier of more than 23 nutrition brands to more than 9,000 customers, for a fivefigure sum. It’s a major step for the rapidly-expanding business, founded in 2014 by Anthony Clark, 44, the former GB ultramarathon runner, pictured above. The company, XMiles UK Ltd, was incorporated the following year. It now supplies 70+ brands to the endurance sports market with more than 21,000 customers through the XMiles. co.uk store. Overall, the group has 30,000+ active customers, 250,000+ annual online visitors and 80+ brand partners. Customers include elite and newbie athletes, including runners, cyclists, swimmers, and triathletes Energy Snacks was founded by James Elling, 36, in September 2016. Commenting on the sale he said: “I’m so pleased that Energy Snacks will be well looked after and continue to grow under the XMiles UK portfolio.” XMiles UK plans to add further products and brands to
the range. Anthony, CEO of XMiles UK, said: “It’s a great privilege and opportunity to build on James’ work, bring the Energy Snacks brand into the XMiles family and take the next exciting steps in the development of the XMiles UK e-shop portfolio.“ The former IT professional began running in 2007 after becoming unhappy with his weight. He competed in his first race, a 10K, two months after starting, and never looked back. In 2009, Anthony ran his first marathon followed by his first ultramarathon two years later. He went on to represent his country at the highest-level, racing 100k road ultras with an eighth overall and M40 world title at the 2018 IAU 100k World Championships. After his time spent racing around the world, Anthony founded XMiles in 2014. The first store was launched in Wimborne three years later and, in 2019, the business expanded and moved to its current Poole Road location. The premises house its HQ, store, warehouse and packing facility. In June 2020 the new XMiles. co.uk website was launched with a move to seven-day online order processing last year. XMiles UK employs six people with a turnover of more than £600,000 in 2021.

ARE YOU PREPARED TO PAY FOR LATER LIFE CARE? Local financial expert, Peter Harding, explains why it’s important to plan ahead and make proper provision to pay for Long Term Care. Almost half of the UK’s elderly care home residents (49.6%) had to pay for their own care between 2019 and 2020: according to a report issued by the Office for National Statistics on 15th October 2021.
How much could you pay? The reality is that most of us will have to foot the bill for our care when the time comes, should we need it. What’s more, those costs are frequently much higher than many people expect. For example, the average annual cost of a standard residential care home in the UK is £34,000, while for more specialised nursing care, it’s around £48,000 on average. Source: Payingforcare.org, 2020 (Based on Laing & Buisson 2020 report)
The cap on care costs. It’s important to make sure that people do not fall foul of any misconceptions when it comes to paying for social care. Also, when the cap on care costs comes in, as announced by the government last year, this is more complex than it seems, and while it will help towards limiting some of the costs it won’t alleviate all of them. It’s therefore likely that many of us will have to face up to making financial provision for our own care, particularly as we’re living longer as a society, thus increasing our chances of needing support in older age.
Don’t leave it too late. Whatever your situation, the most important thing to do is to speak to a financial adviser, particularly as the rules about who pays for what are so complex, not to mention regional variations and what’s likely to happen in the future as the government implements its new policy.

1.Changes to the hierarchy of road users The new changes urge drivers to pay close attention to vulnerable road users by giving extra distance and prioritising their safety if they’re sharing the road. Pedestrians sit at the top of the hierarchy, followed by cyclists, horse riders and horse-drawn vehicles. But everyone on the road must take into account their own safety, and the safety of other road users. To sum it up, it’s important that all road users: Are aware of The Highway Code Are considerate to other road users Understand their responsibility for the safety of others 2.Give way to pedestrians crossing at junctions Now, if pedestrians are crossing or waiting at a junction, drivers should give way and allow them to cross. If you want to turn into a road and you notice a pedestrian waiting to cross, you should allow the pedestrian to cross before turning into the road. If you’re driving to a
junction and you notice a pedestrian waiting to cross, you have to allow them to cross before you reach the junction. Motorists, motorcyclists and cyclists must give way to pedestrians at a zebra crossing. This rule applied before the changes, but the Highway Code has emphasised this further in the new update. Motorists and motorcyclists must give way to cyclists on a parallel crossing too - these are similar to zebra crossings but with a cycle lane. 3.Overtaking a vulnerable road user if you’re driving or cycling If you’re driving, you can overtake a horse rider or cyclist if they’re travelling at under 10 mph on double white lines - as long as it’s safe to do so. There’s also an update on passing distances: If you’re overtaking a cyclist at 30 mph, you should leave at least 1.5 metres (five feet). Give cyclists even more space if you’re travelling at higher speeds. If you’re overtaking riders or horse-drawn vehicles you should leave at least

with cyclists, riders or horsedrawn vehicles If you’re driving on a roundabout, you should give priority to cyclists, riders or people driving horse-drawn vehicles. Cyclists, horse riders and horse-drawn vehicles should stay in the left-hand lane of the roundabout. This applies even if they’re going across or around the roundabout.
PEDAL POWER: Cyclists now have priority on the roads
two metres (6.5 feet). Horses can spook easily, so you shouldn’t pass them at speeds over 10 mph. Allow 2 metres (6.5 feet) of space between you and any pedestrian that’s walking in the road - for example if there’s no pavement.
You shouldn’t overtake unless you’re able to maintain this distance while passing. If you’re cycling and you’re passing slow or stationary traffic you can pass them on the right or left. But you should use caution here as

Pets
Wouldn’t you want a waggy-tailed Willow? Willow is a three-year-old, medium sized crossbreed. She is initially a shy girl, but once she knows you, she is very friendly and excited to see you. Willow can be very affectionate and enjoys spending time with the people she knows. True to her husky side, she can be quite vocal with you. Willow loves her walks and walks well on her lead. However, she can get over excited when experiencing new things. Willow would suit a home that has the time and patience to help her reach her full potential. If you are able to offer Willow or any of her lovely friends, a forever home or a foster home, please contact our office on 01202 875000, e-mail: admin@ waggytails.org.uk or visit our website www.waggytails.org.uk Waggy Tails Rescue are in need of more foster homes. If you are at home most of the time, have a secure garden and experienced with dogs then please give us a ring and discuss fostering for us.
It is a very rewarding experience and enables us to continue helping these dogs (no children under 10 in the house please)

Pets
Choose your pet responsibly There’s been a huge increase in the demand for puppies during the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns. It’s been revealed that one in four people undertake no research at all before getting a new pet. This leads to new owners being unaware of the specific requirements and needs of a new pet, potentially leading to welfare and behavioural concerns. This can also lead to many pets being re-homed. Impulse buying potentially puts the health and welfare of animals at risk, so it’s important to spend time researching both the breed and type of pet that would fit your lifestyle. You need to find a reputable breeder who has looked after both the mum and pups appropriately. Choosing a puppy responsibly Buy from a reputable source
- your vet, kennel club or trustworthy online breed forums can recommend reliable and responsible breeders. The
breeder should always supply you with relevant paperwork including pedigree registration papers, health screening
certificates (conducted by a vet) and a written medical history, including vaccinations and worming. Ask to see mum - always ask to see the puppy’s mum and siblings. This way you can see their temperament, general health and welfare. Avoid puppies raised in kennels as they will have had little time to socialise and may have missed out on important social growth stages. Don’t buy a puppy (or other pet) online and stay away from breeders who offer multiple breeds of pet - these could be puppy farmers who have little/ no interest in the pets they sell. Think carefully before rushing out and buying a puppy, it’s a lifetime commitment. If you do decide it’s the right time for you, get ready for the biggest love affair of your life!

Agents head for London & Country show The hugely popular London & Country Property Show returns in May after a two-year absence. Property marketing changed during the Pandemic, and the internet become pivotal as the ‘shop window’ for house hunters. However, as Symonds & Sampson’s agents found when they were in London in October, nothing beats face to face agency. Speaking after the forum, residential sales manager Peter Grout-Smith said: “Potential buyers appreciate the opportunity to have a knowledgeable, relaxed and friendly discussion with
residential experts, be it for new build, investment, holiday or principal homes before travelling. “Advice on schools, commuting times, communities are hard to fathom out from afar, and being able to hone that information to identify the most suitable search areas before travelling is invaluable”. Organised by The London Office, firms from across the country will be showcasing property from the region to potential buyers, who are attracted to the show from London, the Home Counties and in the past have flown in from across Europe for the event.
Head of agency at Symonds & Sampson Jon Summers is looking forward to the event: “Demand from London and Home County buyers continues to influence the regional market, and we have agreed sales to many properties to buyers relocating to the area.” If you are considering a move and would like your property to feature in the London & Country Property Show, contact your local Symonds & Sampson office to arrange a market appraisal, and we’ll come and tell you more. Visit: symondsandsampson.co.uk/ news/detail/the-london-countryproperty-show-returns.
