A Fordingbridge shop has closed for the final time after 30 years of providing shoppers with what they need. Miles of Value, which sold everything from toys and games to stationery and cards, has shut up shop. Helga Whatley paid tribute to customers when posting about the closure of the High Street store. “Well it really is an end of an era,” she said. “The staff would like to say thank you for your support over the last 30 years. “We have enjoyed watching all the children grow up in front of our eyes, and then coming with children of their own, and hope we have given the people of Fordingbridge happy memories of us too.” And shoppers responded in kind. Mervyn Webb said: “Thank you all,
Fordingbridge is going to miss this go-to shop.” “Will so miss the shop and all you lovely ladies who are so kind and helpful. A great loss to Fordingbridge,” said Janet Welch. Pete White added: “A huge loss and thanks to you all for all the years of service to the town.”

New Forest man is Murderer jailed for life after four-week hearing sentenced for fraud A Fordingbridge man has been jailed for life for the Fioletti became angry and brutally attacked
by Faith Eckersall A 72-year-old New Forest man has been jailed for two and a half years for three counts of business fraud, totalling £275,000. Philip Andrew Whettingsteel, of Marine Drive East, Bartonon-Sea, was sentenced at Southampton Crown Court on January 11, following incidents between April and September 2017, at the time of which Whettingsteel was a director of a business. Hampshire Police said Whettingsteel provided ‘misleading and fictitious information’ in order to borrow large sums of money from a lender based in Kings Worthy near Winchester. He handed over false invoices and lied about two contracts, which he stated were worth millions of pounds. As well as the custodial sentence, Whettingsteel will also be banned from serving as a director of a business for a further six months.

murder of Stephanie Hodgkinson in Bournemouth. Alberto Fioletti, 31, was found guilty of the murder on December 8 last year, following a four-week trial at Bournemouth Crown Court. He was sentenced, on January 15, to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 15 years. At around noon on Friday, May 12, last year, the defendant and the victim – 34-year-old Stephanie from Bournemouth – arranged to meet at the victim’s home address in Rosemount Road to discuss their seven-month relationship that had ended the week before.
Stephanie. The ambulance service received an emergency call at 12.17pm from the defendant stating, ‘I killed my girlfriend’ and the police were notified. Officers forced entry to the address where Stephanie was found dead having sustained a number of stab wounds to the chest. Fioletti was arrested at the scene and following a detailed investigation, detectives from the Major Crime Investigation Team were able to gather evidence to prove he was responsible for the death and could not diminish his responsibility.
Rare county hoards could be lost by Faith Eckersall Two rare treasure hoards including 40 gold coins could be lost to Dorset unless the county’s Museum and Art Gallery can raise enough money to buy them. The first is a group of 40 gold stater Iron Age coins, found at Charlton Marshall near Blandford Forum; the second is a Middle Bronze Age hoard including a bangle, axe-head and sword discovered in Stalbridge. Both hoards were unearthed by metal detectorists and declared as treasure, meaning that they must be offered for sale to a museum at a price set by an independent board of antiquities experts. Dating to the Second century BCE, the Charlton Marshall hoard, valued at £15,300, is incredibly unusual, as the coins were imported from France. They were made by a Gaulish tribe called the Baiocasses and very few similar finds are
known from Dorset and the south coast. The Stalbridge rapier hoard has been valued at £17,000 and £9,075 has so far been raised. Director of collections and public engagement at Dorset Museum & Art Gallery, Elizabeth Selby, said that if the museum did not manage to acquire the twin collections, then they could be broken up and sold outside of the county. “Finds like this hoard tell us about how people were
travelling, meeting and exchanging ideas with others on the continent in the centuries before the Roman invasion,” she said. “The coins have considerable potential for future research into their origins, manufacture and use.” To contribute to the appeal for one or both of these treasures, you can find out more here: dorsetmuseum.org/stalbridgemiddle-bronze-age-hoardappeal/.

Move quickly to be Poet Laureate
Pumped up over ‘green’ heat Kingston Lacy has replaced its unreliable and oil-hungry boilers with a pioneering ground-source heat pump in a bid to tackle climate change. The 17th-century country house now boasts 21st-century heating after work to install the state-ofthe-art, eco-friendly system. Built to resemble a Venetian palace and renowned for its collection of paintings, the new system will help save 30,000 litres of oil each year. It is one of the National Trust’s (NT) biggest heat pump projects to date, and the first high temperature ground source system the charity has installed. The old oil tank has been replaced by almost 6,000m of underground pipes, which transport natural ambient heat in the ground to four high temperature heat pumps, that in turn warm the mansion house and courtyard buildings. Complex work to install pipework involved drilling 32 vertical boreholes in an overflow car park, with each hole 180m in depth. Specialists spent two years conducting extensive archaeological and ecological surveys to ensure the protection of the historic parkland. As well as saving approximately 57 tonnes of carbon a year, the new heating system will remove the danger of oil spills from the previous ‘high risk’ boilers and storage tank, the NT said. The heat pump will also improve conservation of the building and its collection by stabilising the temperature and humidity levels. The house includes one of the UK’s finest collections of paintings, with works by Titian, Velazquez and Rubens. Pictured above is NT project manager Owen Griffith inspecting the heat pump.

What a cool Wimborne kid did in BID vid
‘This is brilliant, John Lewis has competition for best Christmas advert!’ That was one of the reactions to an ad that was created to promote Wimborne last Christmas. The film, which runs to a minute and 23 seconds, tells the story of an eightyear old boy who asks his parents to buy specific presents for Christmas, providing them with a hand-drawn map of Wimborne. The parents dutifully purchase the gifts, even though some of them seem a little incongruous with the sort of thing their son normally likes - which all becomes clear at the end... And the ad, aimed at promoting shopping in Wimborne during the festive season, proved a hit online, being watched more than 22,000 times. BID chairman, Fiona Harwood, said: “The annual Christmas advert that the BID funds has become a bit of a tradition now. “Christmas is such an important time for businesses and the advert was a great way to showcase what the town has to offer. This one really seems to have captured people’s hearts.”
The film was made by Gray Creative Agency, which has been working with Wimborne BID on each of the six Christmas adverts. Justin Gray said: “We love working in Wimborne and the BID are just great at letting us play with creative ideas.” The advert was truly a local project - the inside of the family home was filmed at Living Interiors in the High Street, while most of the cast were Wimborne residents. The star of the show was eight-year-
old Hugo whose parents, Wes and Alessandra, run Piccolo Mondo Pizzeria. Hugo said: ‘I wouldn’t do it every day as it was very tiring, but if you wanted me to again, I would do it’. Comments reacting to the film online included: ‘This is brilliant, John Lewis has competition for the best Christmas advert,’ and: ‘Great job Wimborne Minster BID.’ You can still watch the video at: www. youtube.com/watch?v=HcR65gbfYeY.

FACTOID OF THE FORTNIGHT WE’VE had some stormy weather recently, with many of us no doubt swatting up on our rules when lightning is around. Don’t stand under trees, get off the golf course, that sort of thing. But another way of avoiding being struck by lightning is just by being human. Yes, happily, we don’t get struck very often. For example, if you compare people to giraffes, then people being struck by lightning is extremely rare. For giraffes, there have been five documented cases of fatal lightning strikes (between 1996 and 2010). That may be a low number, but there are only 140,000 giraffes, so it equates to around 0.003 deaths each year due to lightning. That’s 30 times the number of human fatalities. So next time you’re worried about being out in the storm, be thankful you’re not a giraffe...

1000 Christmas trees recycled It was a huge collaboration of the local community and businesses to successfully deliver the annual LewisManning Hospice Care Christmas Tree collection and recycling service. A staggering £18,000 has been raised, from the generous donations of local people who registered for their Christmas tree to be collected and recycled by the charity, resulting in 6.5 tons of trees chipped by local businesses who volunteered their time to support at our chipping hub held at Tower Park Leisure Complex. The chippings and mulch will be used in various community projects across the local area such as, public parks and gardens, playgrounds and attractions. Fundraising manager Vicki Gray said: “We’re thrilled to have completed another successful year of tree collections and delighted to be able to continue this fantastic eco-friendly service
to our local community. Our fantastic volunteers, without whom the campaign simply wouldn’t happen, collected more than 1000 trees across the BH1-BH23 area and, thanks to the generosity of our loyal supporters, we have raised an incredible £18,000 for our charity. “This phenomenal amount will ensure that our dedicated clinical team can continue to provide the extraordinary and vital care and support to our patients as we move forward

Huge number of empty homes
by Faith Eckersall More than six per cent of all homes in the county of Dorset are vacant, a new survey has revealed. Figures published by the Office of Statistics, and gathered from the 2021 Census, show that 1.3 per cent of all homes in the BCP council area are second homes with no usual residence, with 5.6 per cent of all homes in the council area being vacant. Across England and Wales, the South West, which includes Dorset, had the highest percentage of dwellings that were second homes with no usual residents. Flats, maisonettes and apartments are far more likely to be vacant than other types of housing. And, the survey revealed, there are 260,000 empty properties in England alone, with the homeless charity, Shelter, recording 271,000 homeless people in England, meaning that roughly one in every 208 people do not have a home.

Dorset Council to stop running QE Leisure Centre QE Leisure Centre in Wimborne will no longer operate as a public leisure centre from the end of March after Dorset Council cut funding and withdrew from running it. Although the dual-use agreement between the council and Queen Elizabeth’s School (part of Initio Learning Trust) had another 60 years to run, the authority said it could no longer afford to fund the loss-maker. The school will take over the management,
and students will be able to use the facilities including the gym, sports hall, dance studio, hard court, athletics area and newly re-laid and refurbished Astroturf pitch. The pool will be available after completion of works. Whilst it won’t be run as a public leisure centre, new arrangements are being developed by the school to provide opportunities for clubs and community groups to hire the facilities.
Liz West, chief executive officer of Initio Learning Trust, said: “We’ve explored every possible way of maintaining the leisure centre but without significant capital investment it simply is not viable. “Whilst the centre won’t be run as a public leisure centre, QE students will still use of the facilities for lessons as they always have, and will continue to receive a first-class education in sport and fitness.”

Five fine foods to stop you being ‘Sad’ ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE
Seasonal Affective Disorder (Sad) is a type of depression that comes and goes in a seasonal pattern. Sad is sometimes known as ‘winter depression’ because the symptoms are usually more apparent and more severe during the winter. Some people with Sad may have symptoms during the summer and feel better during the winter. Symptoms include: Persistent low mood Loss of pleasure or interest in normal activity Irritability Feelings of despair, guilt, and worthlessness Feeling lethargic (lacking in energy) and sleepy during the day Sleeping for longer than normal and finding it hard to get up in the morning Craving carbohydrates and gaining weight Difficulty concentrating Decreased sex drive Many of us suffer from Sad, but our expert nutritionist, Mark Gilbert reveals five foods that can secretly help you to feel full of energy and ready to combat Sad. Dark chocolate Yes, as the one type of chocolate that we can somewhat justify as healthy in very small doses, dark chocolate contains high levels of magnesium, which is the mineral that gives us energy and keeps us from feeling tired. Bananas Also high in magnesium is ‘the marmite of
fruit’, bananas. Love em’ or hate em’, they’re a great snack for when you’re on the go and their naturally high levels of magnesium mean you’ll be getting the right chemicals to offset the negative impact of Sad and will generally feel less tired. Red or dark meats Famously full of iron, eating red and dark meats is a great way to combat tiredness daily. Mark notes that ‘in one study vegetarians were three times more likely to suffer from Sad, four more times in another’. As such, if you don’t eat meat, make sure you’re getting a decent iron supplement to avoid Sad. Fatty fish We all know the theory that eating fish improves brain function, but does it? Yes, says Mark, due in part to its high levels of a nutrient called Creatine which has been proven to improve memory and cognitive function. However, Mark also notes its use in combatting tiredness: ‘Creatine can literally improve energy production in the brain’. When paired with the naturally high magnesium content in fish, these creatures are
the perfect antidote to the symptoms of Sad. Avocado and nuts Not only are avocados and nuts both low in sugar and high in fibre, making them filling and nutritious, they’re also high in magnesium. Both nuts and avocados are often considered ‘superfoods’ due to their many benefits, so it’s no surprise they also promote feeling energised and help offset some of the impact of Sad. Mark’s advice While a lack of Vitamin D may be a primary cause and increased exposure to sunlight a solution, that just isn’t possible for most of us during the winter months. So, if you’re feeling blue due to the changing weather and darkening sky, give these foods a try. Mark also recommends avoiding coffee later in the day and taking Vitamin D supplements. Of course, if you’re looking to lose weight and also want to avoid Sad, The 1:1 Diet can help you, with our nutritionallycomplete solution that helps you shed the pounds in the fastest, safest, and most scientific way. However, if your symptoms go beyond feeling tired or sad, or these feelings are not going away and you’re having serious physical or mental health issues, you should always consult your doctor. n To find out more about The 1:1 Diet by Cambridge Weight Plan, contact your local award winning consultant, Nicki Edwards The Cambridge Lady on 07904 331589.

Thank you to doctors who didn’t strike Many constituents have written to express their appreciation and thanks to all those junior hospital doctors who have remained at their posts and ignored the irresponsible calls of the British Medical Association to go on strike. In Southampton, 85% have kept working as have large numbers in Dorset. Against this background, it is extraordinary that the NHS Dorset Integrated Care Board, otherwise known as NHS Dorset, has adopted a policy of ‘neutrality’ on the dispute despite it being so damaging to NHS patients. Although the problems caused to the NHS by industrial action are beyond the control of NHS Dorset, the same cannot be said about the continuing scandal of delayed patient discharges from Dorset hospitals. The latest figures are that 353 patients in Dorset are
Christchurch & East Dorset CHRIS CHOPE MP occupying scarce beds despite being fit to leave hospital. The cost is more than £100,000 every day. But even this astronomical price is as nothing compared to the opportunity cost in avoidable suffering for those whose operations are delayed because there is no hospital bed and also for the patients in those beds who would be
safer outside hospital. At the January meeting between the Integrated Care Board and local MPs, it was a shock to me that finding a solution to this crisis was not a top priority. Nor had there been any reference to it on the public agenda of the Board’s meeting on 11th January. I have been told that it was discussed under the confidential part of the agenda after the Board voted to exclude members of the public and press ‘having regard to the confidential nature of the business to be transacted, publicity of which would be prejudicial to the public interest’. Why was allowing a public open discussion between doctors, hospitals, ambulance staff and local authorities about how to resolve this crisis regarded as prejudicial to the public interest? Why is the problem now even
worse than last winter when Dorset NHS arranged for some patients ready for discharge to be moved to a local hotel so as to free up their hospital beds? Other issues which could and should have been publicly discussed at the integrated care board meeting include the continuing shortage of NHS dentists willing to accept new patients, the closure of GP surgeries and delays in the provision of GP appointments. The avowed rationale for creating integrated care boards was to improve productivity and reduce bureaucracy. But despite a larger budget and higher staff numbers, the NHS is treating fewer patients than it did before the pandemic. The best way of making improvements and achieving reform is to maximise transparency and accountability through public, democratic scrutiny. In other words, trust the people.
Time to stop polluting our rivers for profit The state of our rivers is a national scandal. Do you think it’s right to allow raw sewage to be dumped into our rivers and beaches 800 times a day? Rishi Sunak and Simon Hoare do! Under the Tories, raw sewage is being pumped 824 times a day into British waters. This is an environmental disgrace. Every English river is in an unhealthy condition. In one year alone (2020) Wessex water discharged untreated sewage to enter our rivers on 28,164 occasions. Labour will end the Tory sewage scandal by introducing automatic fines for sewage dumping, mandatory monitoring of all sewage outlets, and legally binding targets to clean up the water industry.
Many would believe that more should be done including the renationalisation of this service which is vital for everyone’s everyday living. When the water companies were sold off by the Tories in 1989, the nine principal water companies were debt free but since then they have been allowed to build up more than £54billion of borrowing which has been used, predominately, to fund dividends to their shareholders – many of whom are overseas. About 20% of our water bills goes on servicing that debt. Beyond that the managers and directors of the companies should be personally liable for the pollution by fining them and charging them with criminal misconduct. Recently a consortium of end-sewage-pollution
Dorset Labour GERALD DAVIES pressure groups and sporting organisations have drawn up their own manifesto for the forthcoming General Election – this includes the following elements: Enforce the law – the laws necessary are already there but the Government is not enforcing them.
Stop pollution for profit – water companies’ first duty should be to the environment and not their shareholders. Take targeted action - to end untreated discharges affecting bathing waters by 2030 (Labour has already adopted this). Empower a nature-led approach – nature has huge potential to relieve the pressure on sewage systems but must be enabled to do so – often such measures can also reduce flood risk. Reveal the truth – be transparent about sewage pollution so there is accurate, up-to-date information about the extent of the problem and its resolution, without the need to drag such data out of the vested-interest water companies and the complicit regulator and government.

We need grown-up solutions, not gimmicks With every week that passes this government promotes a flashy policy that, on closer inspection, is simply not workable. It might have worked in the past, but the public now see straight through the gimmicks and recognise that, after 13 years, the Conservatives cannot be trusted to deliver. The housing crisis needs grownup solutions not gimmicks. The latest idea – 99% mortgages for first time buyers - might seem tempting but parents should be warning their house-hunting offspring that all that glitters is not gold. In the early 1990s I worked as a building society debt counsellor, supporting those who were struggling as property prices crashed and interest rates soared. Banks took back properties to stem their losses, and families were thrown onto the streets. Raising a deposit while paying high rent is tough but leaving first-time buyers at risk of tiny changes in house prices is not the answer. A 1% stake in a
Dorset Lib-Dems VIKKI SLADE typical Dorset first home would be swallowed up by two missed payments and would not even start to cover the costs of sale if they needed to move quickly. Far better to reform the Lifetime ISA so that, as savers put small sums away, the Government provides a bigger bonus, or to restrict the sale of new homes to those who already hold property so that when communities accept new housing, they can be
sure they will not sit empty as weekend boltholes or holiday lets. I recently attended a workshop on viability – the calculation that decides what infrastructure or social homes a developers can afford to provide. Various measures are used by the district valuers, but one thing stood out - land prices. Homebuyers are paying the price for developers over-paying based on the ‘hope value’ of a site and then paying again as the land is ‘banked’ the land waiting for its value to rise further. Measures to tax this activity based on homes not built need to be considered. In Dorset there are nearly 20,000 planning permissions granted but not yet built. You don’t need an A-Level in economics to know that if those homes had been built, prices would be lower and the number of people living in overcrowded or poor-quality homes would be lower. Which brings me to the third policy change – scrapping S21 No Fault evictions. It is criminal
that tenants are afraid to report damp or other problems for fear of eviction. I am regularly approached by families who complained, only to be evicted under an S21 notice. Many cannot find private landlords to accept them and councils must place them in temporary housing. B&Bs are no place to spend more than a few days but I regularly see families living in one room for more than a year. The Government promised to ban S21 evictions, but now say they won’t act until they have reformed the courts, and with an election pending I cannot see this being prioritised. They say an Englishman’s home is his castle, but most people just want a safe roof over their head, rented or owned. Insecure housing affects our life chances, our health and our happiness. The solutions are complex, and there are no quick fixes, so we need to do away with the gimmicks and rethink the way the entire market works.
£500 boost for little children’s nursery A little children’s nursery in Hamworthy has received a £500 donation in honour of the fun and entertainment they bring to the residents at Dorset House care home. Muddy Boots Nursery has been chosen by Care South as the latest beneficiary of its Chairman’s 2020 Fund. The fund was set up to give back to community groups, services and organisations which benefit Care South’s residents and staff, and their Care at Home clients. Children from the day nursery, which looks after pre-school-aged kids, regularly visit the care home on Coles Avenue in Poole to sit and read with the residents, play games using a parachute, participate in crafts, gardening and other seasonal activities. It was during one of these visits that chief executive Simon Bird made the presentation to the children and team from Muddy Boots Nursery, right. Simon said: “I’ve seen first-hand the big difference that the children make to the lives of our residents. “As soon as the kids walk into the room, our residents’ faces light up with delight and they love spending time with the children.
“I’m so pleased that we could give a little something back to Muddy Boots Nursery as a thank-you for helping our care home to continue to be filled with fun and laughter.” Stacey Hunt, manager of Muddy Boots
added: “We’re absolutely thrilled to receive this generous donation. The money will go towards craft materials and trips out for the children, who always look forward to their visits to see the Dorset House residents.”

Grandma’s Instant Desert
So, Christmas is over. We have put the decorations and tree away. The grandchildren have eaten their body weight in chocolate and will be hyperactive until Easter! (Yes, the Easter Eggs are already in the shops!) The new school term has started and, of course, the teachers have a training day!! Luckily Tuesdays are now the new Fridays in terms of grandma day care, so we were on hand to help out. Its easier to have the girls overnight, rather than have an early start, so they arrived yesterday afternoon. Pizza and crisps for tea, (watched in front of Moana... grandma’s rules!) but I had forgotten about a dessert. I went to the fridge and came up with this dessert, it went down well with them and with hubby after our dinner. And it’s easy peasy! This morning, they didn’t wake up until 8am, which was bliss. But the problem was, it is raining very heavily. Where we live, the bottom part of our garden becomes flooded when there is
heavy rain. Undeterred, the girls put on their waterproofs and sent out into the garden. The water came up very high on their boots and Ellie had to keep stopping to empty the water out of hers! Lizzie managed to pour water over her head and so everything was soaked. Ironically, we were going to take them to the Aquarium as all the indoor play centres seemed to be shut. But I said to my husband, ‘what do you think they will remember in the years to come, finding nemo in the fish tank or having lots of fun in grandad’s ‘swimming pool’?

They enjoyed it so much, even though it was freezing cold and still raining. We then used an old set of coloured dominoes that I had found when we cleared my parents’ house out. They have numbers on as well, but it’s easier to teach the little one how to play as she can recognise the numbers. She won, but I won little creatures bingo, and Ellie won monster match! Anything that keeps them quiet for a few minutes! Then back home to mum and dad. Ingredients: Cream Cheese – beaten until smooth Chopped Strawberries or any fruit Crushed Meringue Any type of sprinkles More sprinkles for topping Ice cream or cream (optional) Method: Add all the ingrediants to the bowl of whipped cream cheese and mix well together. I added a little bit of pink colouring to make it pretty. Spoon into dishes or glasses and add additional sprinkles on top. Chill in fridge and then serve.
Toddlers game for new food Youngsters at nurseries across Dorset will soon be enjoying meats such as venison and pheasant in their weekly meals. Tops Nurseries, which has venues in Wimborne, Gillingham, Christchurch, Corfe Mullen, Poole, Salisbury, Wareham, Yeovil and more, has signed a new deal with food firm Eat Wild to provide game for children’s meals. The childcare firm has announced a new Game Menu, which they say will offer meals ‘designed to captivate young taste buds while providing unmatched nutrition’. “We are proud to be among the first in our sector to make the move and put wild meat on our menus,” a spokesman said. Tops has developed five wild meat meals which will be incorporated into the nurseries’ menu. Across the company’s 32 sites, the children will be provided with wild meat meals twice within a three-week cycle 3,000 meals per month. Pete Ttofis, catering manager at Tops, said: “Having worked in the hospitality industry for
so long, I had always been aware of how delicious wild foods were, especially game. “The variety and how natural it is always appealed to me as I knew it hadn’t been subjected to courses of intense growth hormones or antibiotic treatment and is left to roam freely eating natural foods within its natural environment, because after all, we are what we eat, right?” The firm said research showed nutritional benefits of game, including less fat and as much protein and nutrients like vitamin B-12, iron and zinc, as typical household meats like beef, chicken, lamb, and pork. “Switching to game meat contributes to the protection of diverse species in their natural environment, aligning with our sustainability mission and ethos,” the spokesman added. Children have been getting to grips with the new menu, with game being incorporated into familiar dishes, such as venison bolognaise and garlic bread appearing on the winter menu.

New sixth-form gym proving a good fit Pupils at a Christchurch sixth form are enjoying sessions from a personal trainer to boost their fitness. Students at Autism Unlimited’s new sixthform building in Christchurch are benefiting from a range of facilities, including a gym. The charity Autism Unlimited provides specialist education, care and support to autistic children, young people and adults. Sixth form at Portfield School starts to focus beyond school life and onwards to accreditations and preparation for life posteducation. Having outgrown its previous location, Autism Unlimited took over a former warehouse in Airfield Road in 2022 and has undertaken an ambitious redevelopment programme. Along with classrooms, workshop areas, a kitchen, social area and outdoor space, the building boasts a recording studio and a gym, where personal trainer Adam Blackwell, owner of Full Effect Fitness, is hosting weekly sessions. Adam explained: “I’ve been working with the students since November last year and I have been really impressed by their eagerness to learn and the steady progress they are making through their tailored fitness programmes. “As a Level 2 Cross Fit coach, I’ve been instructing them in functional exercise, including lifting equipment like boxes and sandbags.
“The gym is well kitted-out and this keeps activities both interesting and challenging. “We work flexibly with the time length depending on what suits the student that day. “I’ve been pleased to hear they’ve been practising outside our sessions too.” Siún Cranny, CEO of Autism Unlimited, said: “Exploring the world of work and careers and achieving fulfilment in adulthood are integral to our approach at sixth form. “Wellbeing, healthy lives and positive networks and relationships are crucial to our students, who impress us more every day. “We needed an innovative and nurturing space to engage our students and we have
been hugely fortunate to have the support of BCP in creating this exciting development. “The new building provides an environment which is meaningful and welcoming for students at a key stage of their lives, as they prepare to embark on adulthood. They love it because it’s their design. “It’s a true example of positive coproduction.” Portfield School Sixth Form will be officially opened on Friday, March 22, by celebrity chef Lesley Waters, who will be spending the day cooking and discussing healthy eating and meal planning with students in the kitchen. n See page 4

The banner running along the top of Ringwood Brewery’s website reads: ‘Online ordering is currently closed due to the closure of Ringwood Brewery. ‘The online store will be open again in due course and will be managed by Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company (CMBC). ‘Thank you for your loyalty and sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.’ Just before Christmas, the owner announced the brewery would close within a month as it was unable to secure a buyer as originally hoped. The final pint was served on January 10. The firm blamed the location for the decision and confirmed that logistics operations based there would close, with deliveries moving to CMBC depots at Tiverton and Farnborough. Founded in 1978, the brewery
followed a tradition of beermaking in Ringwood that goes back centuries to when medieval man first thought to mix crystal water from the River Avon with malted barley from the fields around him. The brewery moved to its Christchurch Road site in 1986. It’s famous for its boar logo and authentic cask ales, including Razorback, Old Thumper and Fortyniner. It’s a sad example of hard times, yet there’s a glimmer of hope at the bottom of this particular beer glass as traditional ale brewing meets new-world tech with an online shop that will be up and running ‘in due course’. Community reactions ranged from sadness to anger and local charitable organisations wished the staff luck and thanked them for their support.

Residents of a local care home celebrated the life of one of history’s most popular music icons; Elvis Presley! With his birthday being January 8, 1935, the home was keen to mark the occasion by gathering the residents together to honour ‘The King of rock n’roll’ in a lovely way. Kings Park Care Home in Ferndown is home to many who love his music, and the home felt it was only right to acknowledge what would have been Elvis’s 89th birthday. Elvis certainly left his mark in the musical history books, with many of his original fans still enjoying his back-catalogue of songs and newer generations following suit.
Rebekah Goddard, home services adviser at Kings Park, said: “The residents loved sharing their memories and thoughts about Elvis, with many here really loving his music. “It’s been lovely seeing them all laugh and smile as they recalled their favourite Elvis moments and songs. Activities like this involving reminiscing, really gets everyone talking and brings everyone together in such a lovely way. Robyn, our Admin Assistant, although from a younger generation, is as huge Elvis fan and even brought in some wonderful images and special picture to share with everyone, at
which they have all loved looking.” Activities assistant Vivian Clarke-Hunt also added: “Residents have really enjoyed this celebration of Elvis, with a special Elvis edition of musical bingo too. “There’s been lots of smiling, laughter, dancing and singing as we went back through his 12 most popular hits and shared memories and moments with each other – it’s been such a lovely morning here. “I don’t know who’s enjoyed it more, them or me!

Our five top tips to deal with acute pain
We’ve all been there - too much gardening, lifting something heavy, spending too long sitting in front of a computer - then suddenly when we go to move, and we feel pain! Sometimes it’s hard to know the best approach when dealing with acute (ie sudden and often severe) onset of pain. Our patients know that a phone call or email to us and we book them in for a reassessment in order to work out what has happened and help them as soon as possible! But what can you do before your appointment? Or if you are self isolating, how can you manage the pain? Have a read on to see our top tips on managing acute pain: Ice It is the big question - ice or heat? 9 times out of 10 - ice is best. Pain is caused primarily by inflammation (e.g. inflammation of a tendon, inflammation hitting a nerve, inflammation of a ligament). When we picture inflammation, we picture heat (literally - it has flame in the word!). Inflammation in our body isn’t always as obvious as a sprained, swollen ankle, it can be as discreet as a stiff neck! Our general rule is to apply an ice pack for 10-20 minutes 3 x a day. Movement The advice of ‘bed rest’ is probably one of the

worst out there. Movement is not only vital for us to feel good on a daily basis, but it also helps us heal correctly! Movement doesn’t just apply to sprained ankles - a bad back, stiff neck, tennis elbow etc. - can all be helped by gentle and controlled movement. Nourish yourself Remember what we said about inflammation? What’s amazing about it is our diet can influence the level of inflammation in our body. That’s why conditions such as acne or psoriasis can be seen to be helped with an anti-inflammatory diet. Even conditions such
as rheumatoid arthritis can be helped! In a nutshell - oily fish, green leafy veggies, nuts and seeds should be eaten regularly. Processed foods, sugary foods, and junk food should all be avoided! The do’s and don’t’s are better outlined here: health.harvard.edu/stayinghealthy/foods-that-fight-inflammation. Don’t panic Stress! The gateway to our sympathetic nervous system. It’s our fight or flight response that makes us feel anxious, increases our heart rate and blood pressure, and feel generally rubbish. Stress is important as it helps us stay alert in genuinely dangerous situations, however it is crossing over to everyday life and invading our thoughts and feelings. Stress = cortisol. Cortisol = increase in inflammation in the body. Try to tell yourself that with good movement, diet and management, you will be okay. Apps like Calm can also be amazing to help destressing. Give us a call We are always here to help and can even just be that reassurance you need. You should never have to just ‘cope’ with pain, so the very least you should do is try the advice above to try and manage your symptoms and get back to doing what you love again.

The art of helping care home residents
A carer at a dedicated dementia care home has turned her flair for art into an inclusive painting project, helping residents collaborate and express themselves. Angela Thorn, a healthcare assistant at Colten Care’s Fernhill, in Longham, has worked with nine residents on what she hopes will be the first in a series of creative works. Starting with a blank canvas and using brushes, sponges and acrylic paint, Angela led the group through the production of a giant landscape scene featuring a woodland walk, river and mountains.
The as-yet untitled work, completed in four sessions, extends to more than a metre wide and is now on display at the home. Angela said: “We started with the canvas flat on a table and we had four people working on it at the same time. “I brought in some leaves and pieces of bark so the residents could see and touch them and have a sense of being outdoors. “I initiated a background wash and then we built up the layers of paint, the contrasts in the sky and on the ground, the perspective and the shapes of features. “I showed them various

techniques in how to paint bark and leaves with sponges. “It was lovely to step back and watch them begin to dab on their first touches of paint and take it from there in the directions they wanted.
“It was like an ongoing story, created in the moment and with no constraints.” Angela said she found residents quickly warmed to the task. “It was entertaining and spontaneous,” she said.

Urgent gas hob warning People with gas hobs need to check if their model is one of those affected by a safety call put out by the Office of Product Safety and Standards (OPSS). Dorset Council Trading Standards says that as a result of an investigation by OPSS, it was found that 12 UK gas hob manufacturers may have a fault in their gas hob elbow joints that could lead to a serious risk of poisoning, burns or gas explosion and/or fire.
These 12 manufacturers have committed to undertake corrective action to make certain hobs safe and OPSS has asked the public to check whether their hob needs action. Trading Standards says the companies will visit every home and make them safe. Lilly is a picture of loyalty and love Hi I am Lilly and I am still looking for my forever home. I am a six-and-ahalf-year-old small rottweiler cross. The people at Waggy Tails are wonderful but I’ve lived here now for four years and I would so love to have a place to call my own. Preferably with a sofa and lots of treats. I was found as a stray and they think I may have had to fend for myself for some time. This means I will need some patience to help me understand how to live in a house. I am incredibly clever and enjoy training and learning new things to add to my repertoire. I am very loving and enjoy cuddles. I will need a home where I am not left alone, certainly to begin with. I can be a tad stubborn at times and do not like to get my hair wet (I’m such a girl!).
I do not want to share my home and family – I would like to be the only pet. I can get over-excited at times so older children only would be best. In return, you will have a loyal, clever and incredibly affectionate best friend. If you are able to offer me or one of my lovely friends a forever home or a foster home please contact our office on 01202 875000, e-mail: admin@ waggytails.org.uk or visit our website www.waggytails.org.uk. We also have lots of other dogs looking for their forever homes. n We will be holding our Spring Fair on Saturday March 16, at Kinson Community Centre, Kinson, from 10am to 12.30pm – please do come and support us. We will have a variety of stalls and games to enjoy including cakes, plants and all sorts of doggy items. Please do tell your friends too!

By Jove! A jolly good production
Created and performed by Gavin Robertson and Nicholas Collett, Done To Death, By Jove! has self-proclaimed itself as the British detective genre gone wrong, and this spring the show heads to Dorset with two communities lined up to try and crack the case... Holmes and Watson meet Poirot and Miss Marple, alongside the usual suspects, in a spoof homage to the British detective genre - who murdered Lady Fanshawe? Why is Matron Maudesly so friendly with one of the guests at the Clinic of Hopes and Cures? Why have the sound cues got mixed up? A cast of six set about bringing a group of suspects and sleuths together to discover whodunnit, and how... except four of the actors are stuck in the van by the side of the motorway, and only two of the cast have managed to get to the venue;
but ‘the show must go on’! This genre-busting farcical comedy is packed with clichés, featuring Lords and ladies, shady servants, secrets, motives and cunning detective-work. Expect a whirlwind of fast costume changes and misdirected acting hiccups in a show where even the set’s gone missing! It’s a true collaborative partnership that
showcases Robertson and Collett’s prolific talent. ‘Done to Death, By Jove!’ tours to Yetminster Jubilee Hall (01935 873546) on Saturday, 10 February, at 8pm, and Shillingstone Portman Hall (01258 860319) on Sunday, 11 February, at 7:30pm. Suitable for ages 12+. Visit www.artsreach.co.uk.

Will relaunch of ‘Johnny’ be good? For the first time in 36 years, Johnny Hates Jazz will be embarking on a headline tour of the UK and overseas, with a stop off at Poole’s Lighthouse Theatre on Saturday, October 5. Clark Datchler (songwriting, vocals, keyboards) and Mike Nocito (production, engineering, guitars), achieved prominence in the late 1980s with a string of hits, notably Shattered Dreams. Released in March 1987, the song reached top five in the UK, Europe, Asia, and Japan. This was followed by global successes like the anti-war anthem I Don’t Want To Be A Hero, Turn Back The Clock (featuring Kim Wilde), Heart Of Gold, and Don’t Say It’s Love. In 1988 Shattered Dreams reached number two on the US Billboard chart. After parting ways at their peak, they reunited in 2010 and released the album “Magnetized in 2013, the title track becoming an instant radio hit in the UK. Luke most certainly has the Wright stuff! Crack out the bunting! It’s Luke Wright’s Silver Jubilee. Over the last 25 years, Luke Wright has built up a reputation for being one of Britain’s most popular live poets. He has won an unprecedented four Saboteur Awards, a Stage Award, and a Fringe First. He’s sold out shows across the world and regularly tours with John Cooper Clarke and the Libertines. This year, thwarted in his attempts to hold a street party and unable to shift the overordered commemorative plates, Wright does what a poet does best, and takes a deep dive into himself. What follows is his most confessional show to date. Wright was adopted as a baby and grew up believing that his
adoption ‘wasn’t a big thing.’ But one night he idly stumbled across his birth mother on Facebook. This window to a world that might have been his has thrown up deep questions about privilege, familial love, and destiny. This show is an excavation of lives lived and not lived. Wright navigates his audience through a warm and honest hour of poems and stand-up with the directness and pathos that has made him one of the most popular live poets in England. With some wild experiments in form, a nervous kitten called Sir John Betjeman and a healthy smattering of drum ‘n’ bass, Wright manages to navigate some heart-wrenching material and keep the laughs coming.
This show debuted to a packed arena at Latitude Festival before a sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe where it was the toast of the critics. Luke Wright’s Silver Jubilee

Acclaimed show is well worth a bash Internationally-acclaimed Bash Street Theatre boast live music, physical comedy and circus skills. They combine these skills to tell a story of the circle of life and an old performer making way for the new in The Battling Butlers, and this February they head back to Dorset for two performances following a sell-out tour in spring 2023. It’s helter-skelter, roller coaster, death-defying, dangerous… life on the road is never straightforward for single dad Joe Butler... juggling babies, toddlers on stilts and teaching young Joey to ride his first unicycle are all part of everyday life in this poignant, musical celebration of the everchanging relationship between a father-and-son, street theatre double-act. Using a unique blend of physical theatre, circus skills, original songs and live music, the Battling Butlers is a study of role reversal and the inevitability of change, as the old order makes way for the new. Based in Penzance, Bash Street Theatre has built an international reputation over the last 30 years, performing silent-comedy, street theatre shows throughout the UK, Europe and beyond. Their latest show, the Battling Butlers, is a real family affair, performed by father and son, Simon Pullum and Loki Pickering, and featuring original live music from multiinstrumentalist and composer Julian Gaskell. Catch The Battling Butlers at Corfe Castle Village Hall (07981 005319) at 7:30pm on Saturday, 17 February, and Wimborne Allendale Community Centre (01202 887247) at the earlier time of 2pm on Sunday, 18 February. A day at the farm with Tiffany Fleming
Tiffany is a volunteer at High Mead Farm in Longham, Ferndown. High Mead Farm is a working farm run to promote the benefits of engaging with animals, soil, and nature. They ‘create purposeful roles for our cofarmers, young people and adults alike, to help bring about a sense of well-being and self-worth that many have never experienced before’.

kindness benefits the receiver, but new research shows that regular small acts of kindness are also beneficial to the giver, resulting in cheerfulness and reducing depression and anxiety. Moreover, the sideeffect of reducing inflammation also appears to have a beneficial effect on the immune system. Recent brain scan studies show that kindness can actually relieve pain. As well as the impact of kind-heartedness on mood and pain, being kind apparently reduces your level of stress hormones and can contribute to living longer. No wonder our volunteers all love helping at the Farm, clearly they’re feeling the benefit of time spent helping others!

18th century. As almost the entire plant is edible there is very little wastage, and it is claimed that the roots and older leaves are delicious when cooked. Best of all, it is a frosthardy plant, perfect for our current climate! With health and wellbeing top of our agenda, I was fascinated to learn that doing good deeds can reduce inflammation and boost a sense of contentment. I must confess to being a little cynical at first that kindness could result in a boosted immune system and improved mood, but as the source of this fascinating theory was none other than Dr Michael Mosely, I listened on. It goes without saying that

with a mild mustard flavour similar to rocket, but slightly bitter) and winter purslanes (aka Claytonia Perfoliata, a fleshy, herbaceous, annual plant and one of the hardiest salad crops available) are supplementing the shop shelves. Great news for all those ‘post-feast’ folk who are watching what they eat and for ‘Veganuary’ advocates looking for a nutritious alternative to the common salad leaf. Winter Purslanes are also commonly known as ‘miner’s lettuce’ due to their popularity with miners during the California Gold Rush; their high levels of vitamin C made them an effective preventative for scurvy. Originating from the mountain and coastal areas of North America, they were brought to Kew Gardens and naturalised in Europe in the

Frozen ground and icy pipes make for a tough day at the Farm! Our poor Co-Farmers find it hard enough to keep warm in the winter months so it tends to curtail their endeavours when it comes to working with everything frozen solid. Keeping them moving is favourite, so they don’t succumb to the cold, and there is nothing quite like a brisk walk to get the circulation going, pictured far right. Luckily, High Mead is not far from lovely Longham Lakes, where Yogi, the Farm’s dog, loves to explore and with so many willing volunteers to take him ‘walkies’ he is in his element. Lucky, too, that the polytunnel is keeping the winter greens frost-free. The ‘picked-to-order’ rocket, mizuna (a leafy crop

First countryside show springs into life Poet Alfred Tennyson may have felt that ‘in the spring a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love’. But in a field in Dorset, thoughts are more preoccupied with the love of the countryside! The Gillingham and Shaftesbury Spring Countryside Show is set to kick off as first rural event in the county calendar in fantastic style. Family is at the heart of the new-look show which takes place on Saturday and Sunday, April 20 and 21, at The Turnpike Showground, in Motcombe. The two-day event is set to be jam-packed with activities and attractions that children of all ages and adults will love. Even better news, kids go free up to the age of 16, plus there’s great savings on early bird family tickets with prices at £10 per adult, £17 on the gate. Buckle up as the UK’s only Arena Comedy Car Act and Slapstick Stunt Show hurtles into the main ring on the Saturday and Sunday. We’ve all heard of flying pigs but what about Joseph’s Amazing Racing Pigs? Five rare breed pigs will be hurdling over jumps and honking in a fun hog hoe-down on the Saturday. Not to be bleaten, on the Sunday you can see the Lamb National. Think Grand National with sheep! Sunday visitors will love The Dog & Duck, not a pub, but a
brilliant show featuring farmyard animals. There are free tractor and trailer rides horticultural and gardening attractions, delicious Dorset foods and drinks along with live music to celebrate the arrival of spring. As well as loads to see, there’s much for visitors to get involved in. For the first time, the Show boasts a photographic exhibition, inviting amateur photographers to capture the world through their lens. The entries will be judged by North Dorset’s renowned landscape photographer Charlie Waite who will also be giving an expert talk to share his top tips on landscape photography. Cat Harris, new Show Organiser said: “We’re so excited to launch this competition and it’s such an honour to have one of the world’s leading landscape photographers as judge. Whether a budding
photographer or have been capturing moments for years, we encourage you to join in.” Fans of Worzel Gummidge won’t want to miss the chance to create their own scarecrow. Let your
imagination run wild and you can make use of any materials. Cat added: “ We hope to have a spectacular line up so visitors can enjoy a Scarecrow Stroll. Entry is free; The only rule is that the scarecrow must be a group effort – we hope groups of all ages will take part - families, schools, youth groups and care homes.” Register your scarecrow group at: showingscene. com or contact compete@ gillinghamandshaftesburyshow. co.uk for more details. Entries open for Bournemouth Bay Run
Entries are open for one of Dorset’s prettiest road runs – the annual charity Bournemouth Bay Run. Open to runners of all ages and ability, the March 24 event takes competitors along the beautiful seven-mile stretch linking Bournemouth with Poole, raising money for five local charities
including Dorset Mind, Lewis-Manning Hospice Care, and the RNLI. Runners can participate in the Half Marathon or 10km events, and there is a 1k race for children. Last year more than £20,000 was raised. More details here: bournemouthbayrun.co.uk.

The intrepid band of eager game fishers made the short hop over the Wiltshire border to Avon Springs. It’s a favourite of the Poole and Wimborne Fly Fishers, even in cold January conditions. An early start was slow to get going but the fish soon showed up and offered some great battles. Avon Springs can often produce a large specimen and this time it was Karen O’Shea, pictured above, who managed to land a whopper weighing in at 5lb 10oz. Not only did Karen catch the fish of the day but also weighed in the heaviest bag at an impressive 14lb. Fish were falling mostly to black lures but I did see a couple of fish fall prey to dry imitative patterns... could spring be on the way?

Exploring Stour & Avon...
New Stour & Avon, January 26, 2024 43
with retired Dorset rights of way officer CHRIS SLADE
WEST STOUR This is a short walk of about two and a half miles. If you’re doing it after recent rain I recommend you to wear wellies! Start by visiting the church which appears to be well looked after. It has a large gallery but no stained glass. Then join the footpath opposite the church. It’s part of the Stour Valley Way. It takes you east for nearly a furlong and then turns left and heads north for about a mile, crossing lots of fields. There are good views and, to your right, you can look down on the parish
boundary which is the River Stour. At the north end, where the path meets the road, it can get rather wet and you’ll
be glad you’ve got your wellies on. Join the road, Harpitts Lane, which takes you south west, uphill, for a furlong to the parish boundary with Kington Magna where you join a bridleway that takes you south. Soon the bridleway is upgraded to a byway and continues southwards between hedges along the parish boundary. It will probably be a little muddy in places. When I walked it there was water running down it! You’ll come to a part of the village named the Lynch and the route is now a road that takes you past some houses and back to where you started.

Takeover builds on successful business A Wimborne-based construction materials and waste management firm has taken over a family-run Weymouth company. Avon Material Supplies (AMS), which is headquartered at Three Legged Cross, has completed a takeover of Doonans of Weymouth, a ready-mixed concrete and building materials supplier in the town. The move aims to boost AMS’s ability to meet an increasing demand for high-quality concrete services and aggregate supply across Dorset. With the addition of expertise, drum mixers, and a concrete batching plant, AMS said it was now well positioned to consolidate its position as one of the county’s leading concrete and aggregate companies. Doonans is a family-run business with more than three decades of service in Weymouth. Harold Doonan, MD and founder of the firm, said: “I’m delighted that the business my family and I have worked so hard to build up over the last 30 years will now be able to enter a new chapter under the ownership of AMS, a business we’ve admired for many years. “It seems like the perfect outcome, as I can now enter retirement knowing that our existing customers will continue to be served by a business that has customer
service and high-quality products at the heart of everything they do.” James Howarth, MD of AMS, added: “This acquisition is an important part of our business’s desire to strengthen its operations in West Dorset and will perfectly complement the existing services we offer in the area, which include the supply of concrete, construction aggregates and waste management services.
AE Jolliffe & Son, Ferndown
“From my time working with Harold, I am confident we have acquired a successful business with a long history of providing fantastic services to the businesses and people of Weymouth and the surrounding areas. “We’re looking forward to continuing and building upon the great work Harold and his team have been doing over the last three decades.”

Upbeat chamber looks to anniversary year New president Tony Brown received the chain of office at the Dorset Chamber ahead of its 75th anniversary year. He succeeded outgoing president Caron Khan at a packed annual meeting when members heard of a ‘successful year’ despite the challenging business environment. Chef executive Ian Girling hailed the achievements of the past 12 months, which included the chamber’s first Business Festival of its kind. The chamber – Dorset’s leading business support organisation and the county’s ‘voice of business’ – was also named as one of the top five chambers of commerce in the UK during 2023. It celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2024, which will include the return of the Business Festival over a fortnight, including the Dorset Business Awards. Ian, marking his 10th anniversary in charge of the chamber, told nearly 100 members: “It has been another successful year. “Our highlight of 2023 was the Dorset Business Festival, a four-day celebration that included a networking launch, a major conference and expo and the return of the Dorset Business Awards. “With a footfall of more than 800 businesses, this was the largest and most ambitious
project ever undertaken by Dorset Chamber. “A huge thank-you goes to our amazing team and to all of our festival partners. “You can expect to see the festival return in October 2024 over a two-week period. “It’s been extremely challenging for businesses over the last four years with unforeseen global challenges and we will continue to do our absolute best for our business community.” Ian picked out the chamber’s Google rating with 119 five star reviews – the highest of any chamber in the UK – and the success of the
A happy new year for you? We all know that this past holiday was one of intended reflection and rest. Of affirming family bonds. That’s the ideal, but sadly it can also be the stereotype. Often, the reality of this theory is far removed from our own individual circumstances. You may find yourselves at a crossroads at the pivotal time of a fresh new year. If you do, you must think very carefully of the potential consequences before taking action. That’s why we here at HGW offer you the opportunity to talk to grounded, skilled family law professionals who deal with family separation all of the year, not just in the new year. You can see us, confidentially, for a free, no obligation half-hour appointment, if only to explore your options of directions of travel. After that, we can discuss further funding options concerning the following.
• Divorce & Separation. • Taking care of your children post separation. • Financial implications of separation. • Domestic abuse concerns. Whether you’re married or cohabiting, separating is a huge decision. It may be that staying together is the right outcome. Or you may need a conciliatory guide to your family separation. Alternatively, you may need a more robust approach to help you navigate difficult existing family circumstances to a manageable long-term solution. Whatever those circumstances are, we’ll have your back as we head into the unknown of 2024. All year. Contact us at 01202 881454 or via email at enquiries@ hgwalker.co.uk for a complimentary, confidential half-hour consultation to discuss your options. Rob Price, Associate, Family Law Solicitor

It’s easier being green than you may think New Year, new you! It’s not just the diet/ gym regime/dry January... many people are also committing to a greener 2024. Armishaws Removals have some incredible eco-credentials (planting 50,000 trees!) and have highlighted a few small home changes you can make to save money and help save the planet. Roll with it The average, four-person household uses 1.1 toilet rolls per day. Have you ever checked to see how green your loo roles are? There are now a number of eco-friendly brands using recycled paper or even bamboo. Big butts Rather than using water from the mains, collecting water in a water butts can drastically help prevent the depletion of our reservoirs. Simply by harnessing rainwater, you can make your garden even greener and save money if you’re on a water meter. Upgrade girl Older appliances tend to be less efficient, meaning greater fuel consumption and greater fuel costs. Is it time you upgraded your old machines? Wrap it up Poor insulation is one of the greatest causes of heat loss in our homes.
On The Move
Making your home more energy efficient is good for the environment and your bills. Make it a double Getting rid of all old single glazing and switching to double glazing. Even secondary glazing can reduce heat loss and improve your home’s green credentials. Have a refill Refill shops are cropping up everywhere. As well as organic, sustainably-sourced staples like dried foods, all with zero packaging, you’ll also often find other eco-alternatives on offer such as cleaning supplies and beauty products. Bulk up
If you can’t find a refill shop, buy in bulk, larger containers means less packaging waste and lower costs. Add some greenery House plants like bromeliads remove more than 80% of nasties from the air, and they look good. Plants have also been shown to reduce anxiety and depression. Say goodbye to greetings cards The UK sends more than 800,000,000 greeting cards every year! The environmental impact from the production, waste and transportation of cards to our homes, has led to more and more families ditching traditional cards and finding other ways to send the love; why not shoot a short Tik-Tock style video instead.
