2013 HIGHLIGHTS New academics join BABS The School welcomed three new Senior Lecturers in 2013, bringing more depth to the Systems and Cellular Biology research group: • • •

Dr Paul Waters joined the School from the Australian National University in January Dr Irina Voineagu arrived in March, relocating from the Riken Brain Science Institute in Japan Dr Richard Edwards arrived in November, coming from the University of Southampton

BABS facebook page BABS launched its facebook page in September 2013. At publication date (July 2014), 355 people had ‘liked’ the page: https://www.facebook.com/UNSWBABS

Honours and awards for BABS staff Dr Louise Lutze-Mann was the recipient of the prestigious 2013 Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education Award. The award was presented to Louise at ComBio 2013, held in Perth. Her teaching innovations are primarily aimed at stimulating critical thinking and independent learning in students by showing the application of problem solving in a research context.

High profile BABS alumnus Professor David Sinclair completed Honours and then his PhD under the supervision of Emeritus Professor Ian Dawes. David was a speaker at Sydney’s 2013 TEDx, a global set of conferences devoted to the propagation of ‘Ideas Worth Spreading’. David codiscovered a molecular cause of ageing at MIT in the 1990s. He is now a tenured Professor at Harvard Medical School, and a Professor at the Lowy Cancer Research Centre. At TEDx, he presented his research on understanding why we grow old, and how to use this knowledge to prevent and treat rare and common diseases. He is perhaps best known for identifying resveratrol from red wine as an anti-ageing molecule. Page 6

Honours and awards for BABS HDR students Two BABS PhD students excelled in the 2013 Faculty of Science Postgraduate Research competition, with Josie van Dorst (supervisor Dr Belinda Ferrari) taking out first place and a $5K prize and Angela Chilton (supervisor Professor Brett Neilan) a runner-up, receiving $3k. More than 70 students entered the annual competition, with Robyn Williams, presenter of ABC’s The Science Show, Nicky Phillips, science writer at The Sydney Morning Herald and astronomer Professor Fred Watson among the celebrity judges.

Josie van Dorst

Josie’s research uses microbes to study threats to the Antarctic environment from human activities, including the operation of 71 research stations, petroleum contamination and climate change. Angela's research on cyanobacteria found in biological soil crusts in the Pilbara region of WA looks at how these microbes can be used to improve remediation of mining-disturbed soils. Angela Chilton

PhD student (supervisor Professor Hazel Mitchell) Natalia Castano Rodriguez was awarded the prize for best oral presentation at the XXVIth International Workshop on Helicobacter and Related Bacteria in Chronic Digestive Inflammation and Gastric Cancer, held in Madrid in September and organised by the European Helicobacter Study Group.

PhD student Catheryn Lim (supervisor Professor Merlin Crossley) was awarded the ASBMB Student Poster Prize at ComBio 2013 for her poster ‘Engineering next generation artificial transcription factors for improved chromatin access’.

PhD student Joshua Swift (supervisor Dr Louise Lutze-Mann) was awarded the inaugural Steggles Science Scholarship, valued at $180,000 over 3 years. Josh will investigate poultry vaccine technology and immunological response to specific mammalian cells. Co-supervisors are A/Prof Julian Cox, Prof Mark Baker (Macquarie University) and Dr Tony Pavic (Baiada, Steggles parent company). The scholarship was formalised between Dean Merlin Crossley and Mr Simon Camilleri, Baiada’s MD. Page 7

BABS Special Events during 2013 GSA Annual Conference A group of academics, postdocs and HDR students led by Professor Bill Ballard organised the 2013 Genetics Society of AustralAsia conference hosted at UNSW. The conference was held in the Scientia from 14-17 July, and included a special memorial symposium in honour of the late A/Professor Alan Wilton. An exciting line up of international and national speakers was complemented with presentations by leading and emerging geneticists covering all aspects of modern genetics research. More than 250 scientists from Australia and around the world attended, with topics of discussion including a broad range of genetic research in a variety of animals, as well as epigenetics, ecology genetics, evolution and development, sex chromosomes, medical genetics, and teaching and learning.

Indigo V Indian Ocean Expedition BABS ARC Future Fellow Dr Federico Lauro led a multinational scientific expedition to some of the most under-sampled parts of the Indian Ocean. As ships travel through oceans they leave behind traces of iron and other metals that are not always abundant in seawater, especially in the tropics. These metals (or lack of them) are often limiting factors to the growth of ocean microbes. The voyage commenced in Capetown, with a layover in Mauritius before heading to Phuket and the final destination, Singapore. Along the way, the boat passed through the pristine Chagos Archipelago, the first research vessel to ever be given water and sponge sampling rights for this region. Highlights from the expedition were recorded in a blog (http://indigov.unsw.edu.au/), with ongoing media coverage being received via radio interviews on ABC Radio. The crew included researchers from UNSW, Macquarie University and UTS, together with individuals from Copenhagen University and the Technical University of Denmark, and the Desert Research Institute and University of California in the US.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) Delegation In August 2013, UNSW Australia signed a major research partnership with China’s prestigious Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). The agreement sets out a future roadmap for the two institutions to collaborate on research commercialisation in China and Australia. The partnership established a joint investment fund to provide seed funding for collaborative research across a range of areas including materials engineering, computer science and biotechnology. The School played host to seven SJTU scientists from 14-16 August who had research interests aligned to research carried out in BABS. Professor Rob Yang and A/Professor Mike Manefield were appointed hosts for the respective research groups. Research presentations from both institutions were held over two days. The visit included a tour of BABS research and teaching facilities, and over morning tea and lunch, BABS researchers were given the opportunity to discuss potential research collaboration with the SJTU delegates. Three collaborative projects have subsequently commenced between BABS and SJTU researchers, funded by the SJTU-UNSW Collaborative Research & Development Fund.

Antarctic Expedition Professor Rick Cavicchioli set sail for Antarctica in early October on his third expedition to the region. Deep Lake, in Antarctica's Vestfold Hills, harbours a unique flora of salt-loving archaea that survive at temperatures way below freezing. Hypersaline and intensely cold, Deep Lake is one of the most hostile aquatic environments on the planet, but in its isolated waters, a simple yet remarkable microbial community, dominated by cold-adapted haloarchaea, has evolved. The ability of Deep Lake’s haloarchaea to function in conditions of extreme cold and salinity raises the possibility that some of their enzymes could find low-temperature industrial applications.

BABS Research Symposium 2013 saw the reintroduction of the BABS Research Symposium, an initiative by new HOS Andrew Brown. The aim is to generate more awareness amongst the School community of the breadth of research being carried out by postdocs, HDR and Honours students and research fellows, as well as academics. With the assistance of BABSOC/EISSOC student society, led by Wallace Bridge, the School hosted a fully catered symposium at Coogee Bay Hotel’s Conference Centre in October. It is intended that this will again become an annual event, with a different theme each year. For 2013 the theme was ‘Improving Tomorrow through Science’.

BARDO  BADO During Semester 2, the School held its BABS Annual Research Day Out, at Coogee Beach Surf Club, this year removing the ‘R’ for research to focus on strategic planning for teaching as well as research. Sessions during the day included presentations on ‘Forging new links within BABS’ (various presenters), NHMRC grant strategy (Rob Yang, Hazel Mitchell & Andrew Brown), NHMRC grant pitching (Laurent Rivory, Research Strategy Office), Teaching strategy (Louise Lutze-Mann), and ‘Working towards a School strategy’ led by the Head of School.
