Tips for applying for a PhD or Research Masters Program Never Stand Still

Graduate Research School

Step 1: before applying – checking eligibility and choosing a research area

To find out about the types of postgraduate research degrees offered at UNSW see: http://research.unsw.edu. au/postgraduate-research-programs

To determine whether you are academically qualified to apply for a postgraduate research degree, see the requirements as listed here: http://research.unsw.edu.au/ step-1-am-i-academically-qualified-apply

Before applying for a higher research degree you will need to match your area of interest to one of our faculties or schools.

To succeed in your postgraduate research degree you need to undertake a body of work that will make an original contribution to the field of study. You should think about the following questions: What are the gaps in knowledge in my area of interest? – that is, what is the research problem, and why is this important? What could I do to help fill in some of gaps in this area? – that is, what approach and methods could be used to answer the research question?

Step 2: before applying – finding a supervisor Choosing your supervisor is very important. The ideal supervisor is knowledgeable in your topic of interest, has good research skills and experience and is someone you feel you can work with. It is important to meet and/or correspond with staff whom you believe have expertise in your area of interest prior to submitting an application.

Tips for finding potential supervisors Use the UNSW ‘Find a Researcher’ search function to look for academic researchers and their research interests — http://research.unsw.edu.au/ researcher — you can use the search function here to look for research topics you are interested in, and see who is working in those fields (see tips below on keywords) Use Google (or your favourite search engine) to find UNSW researchers who are working in your area of interest Conduct a literature search in your area of interest Search your area of interest on the main UNSW website (unsw.edu.au) Contact the Postgraduate Coordinator in the relevant school for assistance with finding a supervisor: http://research.unsw. edu.au/postgraduate-coordinatorcontacts Look at what is going on at UNSW’s nine faculties via UNSW faculties and schools (unsw.edu. au/faculties) When you are doing any of these searches start out using broad search terms, and refine if necessary based on the results you receive.

Do I pick a research project or does the supervisor? Can I approach a potential supervisor with my idea? You should contact directly any potential supervisor * you want to study with and let them know what you are interested in. Some supervisors may be able to integrate your area of interest with a project or research area they currently have. When you contact potential supervisors be sure to include your full contact details, research interests, qualifications and research experience in your correspondence

* Applicants to the Australian School of Business (ASB) MUST contact the School Research Officer by email (graduateresearch. business@unsw.edu.au) or phone (+61 2 9385 6183) prior to submitting an online application or searching for a supervisor.
