Barbara Burns Joined the club mid 70’s Treasurer 2000-2001 (half season) 2001-2002, 2002-2003. It is such a pity that I have to pen this vale so quickly after the passing of our other long time member and her husband Nat. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to David Burns, their son.
08
Barbara had been a long time dedicated member of North Palm Beach. A strong advocate of our club, she would extol the virtues of being a member to everyone and was instrumental in attracting other females to the club. Barb led the way in what was a very male orientated club back in the 1970’s, when the sleeping quarters was a room behind the canteen and a mattress on the floor. Barb’s commitment to the club saw her working in all facets. She held positions on the club committee as Secretary, Treasurer and Social Co-ordinator over the years. Barb was always willing to help out, so much so that she took on the huge task of organising and running the 50th Anniversary held in a huge marquee in the park, it was a night all of us would remember. Barb and Nat’s illness saw them relocate to Brisbane. They may have physically moved but North Palm Beach was always in their hearts and minds and they will always be in ours.
vale The Management Committee and members of North Palm Beach Surf Club would like to extend our sympathy to the families of our members who have lost loved ones during the past season.

president’s report Graham Howard 2013-2014 Surf Life Saving New South Wales Life Membership Awarded to Graham Howard For distinguished voluntary service and dedication to the advancement and promotion of Surf Life Saving
It is with great pleasure I can report that the 201314 season was another outstanding season for North Palm Beach SLSC. The club and surrounding area was a building site for the entire season and all the patrol equipment was stored off-site at Jeff Conan’s place at Palm Beach. This meant all the patrol gear, including the IRB and Jet Ski’s, needed to be transported to and from the beach for every patrol. Despite all the difficulties and disruption of the building work the members of our patrols continued the Surf Lifesaving tradition of “vigilance and service” and the high standard of patrolling this club is renowned for carrying out many rescues, performing first aid as well as locating lost children on several occasions during the season. We continue to carry out rescues well outside the flagged area at the northern end of the beach off the car park and provide support to the members of Palm Beach SLSC to the south when required. The vigilance of our roving patrols is to be commended and the emphasis of our patrols on prevention and managing the beach, particularly when the conditions are dangerous reduces the number of rescues we need to perform. The fantastic new extension to the clubhouse would not have been possible without the support and work of our Club Patron, Jeff Conan. As the building is coming close to completion it is drawing to the end a journey that began several years ago. Our initial plans and meetings with Pittwater Council began in 2008 and we finally gained the construction certificate and began the building work in 2012. Jeff designed
11
the building and was on site throughout the project not only overseeing the entire job and supervising all the work but he was “hands on” doing all the cabinetry and a range of other jobs. Without Jeff, we would not have this wonderful facility and we all owe Jeff our thanks and gratitude. I would like to thank SLSNSW and the State Government for the $320k grant to assist with the costs of the building work. I would like to congratulate all the members who gained their Surf Rescue Certificate and Bronze Medallion this season and joined patrols as well as those members who gained other Surf Lifesaving awards and maintained their proficiency. I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of those members who achieved 100% patrol attendance this season. Particular mention needs to be made of Warren Howard who, this season, achieved 12 consecutive years of
100% patrol attendance, he is closely followed by Terry Kirkpatrick who achieved 8 years and Mel Rahme and Vicki Young who achieved 7 years of 100% patrol attendance this season. This shows a wonderful commitment to the club and surf lifesaving and is an example for all members. I would also like to acknowledge the work of the Powercraft Panel throughout the season to improve the standard of training and the proficiency of operators across the club’s within the Branch. My thanks to Peter Finch, Kieran Menzies, and Geoff Hale from the Jet Ski section and Nigel Penn, Terry Barber and Wal Dobrow from the IRB section for their support and work this season. The work of the Powercraft Panel was supported by North Palm Beach SLSC who made available the club facilities and equipment for all the training and proficiency sessions.
12
I would like to thank the committee for their dedication and work throughout the season. Even though it was a difficult season with all the building work and many disruptions the committee has cohesive and provided great support. To the - canteen workers, Neil and Joan, - thank you for all the hard work keeping the kiosk running 7-days a week. I would also like to thank all those who came along to assist with the BBQ for the Palm Beach markets. Thanks also to all who help me with Home & Away during the year. Finally, I would like to thank our major sponsors and supporters - the 7-Network, Streets, Pittwater Council, SLSNB, SLSNSW, Fred and Gloria Tilley & Jeff Conen for their continuing support of the club. Also thanks to the Branch & SLSNSW & SLSA sponsors Coca Cola, Streets, Ausgrid, Telstra, NSW Government, Westpac, Dee Why RSL, Westfield - Warringah Mall, Manly Daily, DHL, Pittwater Council, NSI TAFE for their continuing support of Surf Life Saving. I look forward to seeing you all on North Palm Beach in the coming season.

Well done to all those who have completed their IRB Crewman Certificate, This upcoming season would be great to obtain your Silver Medallion IRB Driver Certificate this would benefit your patrol, your club and the community as a whole.
administration report Michelle Rae The 2013-14 season has been a fantastic year for North Palm Beach SLSC. The season started off with a bit of a bang this year with Barrenjoey headland going up in flames on 28th September 2014. It was amazing to watch the fire spread over the headland. A couple of our members, Tom Foster, Darryl Dunbar and Warren Howard braved the fire and assisted with the evacuating the houses and the trail around the Barrenjoey. The two bobcats were also heroes on the day with assisting the fire fighters carrying the equipment up to the lighthouse to fight the fire. North Palm Beach Surf Club is near completion with the renovations. The view is amazing and the second story looks amazing and huge. We have our patron, Jeff Conen, to thank for all the work that has occurred with the building. Again, Howie has picked up a second trade after assisting with the building over the past few months. Once again we had new members that have, as usual, been trained to the high standard North Palm Beach SLSC is known for. The club’s Chief Instructor, Mel Rahme, and her follow trainers including Darryl Dunbar, Kristen Raper, Warren Howard have stepped up to train this year’s squads despite the renovations occurring around the building.
It’s great to see the younger brothers and sisters coming through to do their Surf Rescue Certificate and following their older siblings. It was also great to see a lot of the Surf Rescue Certificate kids gain their Bronze through the season. Again this year we had Kim Spicer come up to the club and put everyone through paces for Spinal Management, ARTC and Applied First Aid with either proficiencies or new awards. I would like to thank the surf club’s Patrons for all their support again this season. Our Patrons have always been their willing to help the club in any way they can. We had another successful Presentation Night at the surf club in June. A lot of the younger members came along with their families to watch the presentation of awards in recognition of individual achievements throughout the season. It was great to catch up with everyone during the off-season. On a sadder note, the club lost a former member Barbara Burns who a member for many years prior to moving to Queensland. Our thoughts are with her family during this time. Yours in Life Saving Michelle Rae

chief instructor report Melinda Rahme This season was off to a great start with 7 members gaining their Bronze Medallion and 6 gaining their Surf Rescue Certificate. As the season went on we had 6 members gaining their Spinal Management certificate and then things started to slow down seeing only 2 Bronze members joining at the end of the season. A big congratulation goes to Jordan, Hunter and Morgan Key for finally being able to gain their Bronze Medallion at the start of the season, after a very long wait.
26
I would like to thank Steven Rahme, Darryl Dunbar, Kerry Traynor and Warren Howard for assisting with the Bronze and SRC groups throughout the season especially with their exams.

associate member report Damian Macey Hi! to all members of North Pam Beach Surf Life Saving Club. This past season has been terrific even though it has been difficult running club activities with all the building work going on. Thank you to our President, Graham Howard, and our Patron, Jeff Conan, for all their work on the renovation. They have achieved all they set out to do. Well done!! We will all benefit from your efforts. I would like to congratulate the new younger members who received their Life Saving Certificate and the older ones including the dads who earned their Bronze Medallion and are now active members patrolling the beach. Well done to you all. There are many ways for Associate Members to support the club. Thank you to members who supported the Palm Beach Markets BBQ throughout the year. This activity generates an income that supports the club’s Outback Meets the Beach program to support Aboriginal young people. The canteen is another opportunity for Associate Members to become involved in the life of the club. Many thanks to Joan and Neil for running the kiosk throughout the year, the considerable income generated from the kiosk goes to purchasing essential rescue equipment. outback meets the beach Outback Meets the Beach, the club’s award winning program that began in 2008, has not been running while the renovation work has been underway at the surf club. This building work at the surf club coincided with a period of great disruption in many remote communities in Northern Territory following the intervention and a number of other political issues. This combination of issues made it impossible to continue bringing the group to stay with us at the surf club. However, the club has maintained contact with the Jawoyn Association and we will begin the program again as soon as possible.

The overall aim of this program is to provide an opportunity for a cultural exchange that promotes “two-way learning so that everyone involved in the program can overcome and breakdown their preconceived stereotypes and encourage greater understanding on both sides. A second aim is to provide some opportunities to build the capacity within these communities so that, over time, they can become safer, more independent and economically sustainable. The Club has been exploring the possibility of other partnerships with Macquarie University and other community groups to support Aboriginal young people and introduce them to surf lifesaving in the coming seasons.

A HOME AWAY FROM HOME GRAHAM Howard is known as Mr North Palm Beach. He also does a lot behind the scenes for Australia’s long running TV soapie Home
Graham Howard receives his Outstanding Service award from Surf Life Saving NSW president Tony Haven. and Away. “Basically Home and Away hires the club off us and hires equipment like IRBs, jetskis, buggies and four wheel drives,’’ Mr Howard said. “And we have to train the actors how to use them and have somebody with them, so I am basically the co-ordinator. “I have been there since day one – 26 years ago.’’ Howie, as he is more affectionately known, has been at North Palmy much longer. He found his way to the beach one day when he joined his Drummoyne Reds rugby team for a barbecue. “I have been there ever since. It [surf life saving] is something I just fitted in to. It was somewhere to spend some time.’’ Earlier this year he was given Life Membership of SLSNSW. “This was the first one for North Palm Beach and, for me, it was all about the club,’’ he said. His latest honour is receiving the Outstanding Service (Harry Ragan) Award at SLS Sydney Northern Beaches Awards of Excellence. Apart from his award, he was just thrilled to see North Palm Beach Club win the Education award and Most Improved club. North Palmy came from 16th to be sixth and win the Most Improved club. “That’s just tremendous. That’s because we are getting some new people and they spur on others,’’ Mr

Pic John Grainger Source: News Limited Mr Dunbar got a number of portable pumps working to assist the fire fight. Palm Beach SLSC deployed an inflatable rescue boat to get a number of fishers stranded on a rock platform below the headland. Helping people in danger was at the core of surf life saving, Tom said. Helping with a bushfire was just a different approach.

Tom, a volunteer at North Palm Beach Surf Life Saving Club, was in a group of seven patrolling the beach when the fire was first spotted on the headland about 2pm, and called 000. Patrol members Tom, career firefighter Darryl Dunbar and fellow club volunteer Warren Howard helped evacuate 20 people from the headland track, out of the fire’s path.

Pic John Grainger Source: News Limited “I was proud that I helped out. I was worried about people’s safety,” he said. “It’s the job, helping the community.” Mr Dunbar, a superintendent at Fire and Rescue NSW, said it was a great team effort. “It was a good effort from all volunteers concerned and all emergency service personnel,” he said. Meanwhile A leading firefighter said it was likely the blaze was deliberately lit. Warringah Pittwater Rural Fire ServiceFS deputy fire control officer Inspector George Sheppard said 99 per cent of the bushland on the headland was burned during the intense fire. He said it appeared to have started beside one of the tracks to the top of the headland about 2pm on Saturday.

Pic John Grainger Source: News Limited Insp Sheppard said the last bushfire at Barrenjoey Headland was in the early 1980s. The fire broke out about 2pm on Saturday afternoon, causing dozens of people to be evacuated from Palm Beach, known around the world as the setting for TV series, Home and Away. The two residential buildings atop the headland were damaged after embers got into their roof spaces but the damage was quickly contained by National Parks and Wildlife Service and Rural Fire Service personnel. The three timber cottages at the foot of the headland were not damaged, thanks to a back-burning operation conducted on Saturday night.

Source: Supplied Warringah Pittwater Rural Fire Service deputy fire control officer Insp George Sheppard said 99 per cent of the bushland on the headland was burned during the intense fire, which he said appears to have started beside one of the tracks to the top of the headland about 2pm yesterday. He said the flames quickly rushed up the hill through the dry bush and surrounded the head lighthouse keeper’s cottage and the semi-detached assistant lighthouse keepers’ cottages. He said it was likely embers finding their way into the roof spaces of the cottages caused the damage, rather than direct contact with flames. “The asset-protection work down around the lighthouse complex by the NPWS and the way the buildings had been prepared helped save them,” he said. Insp Sheppard said that at the height of the blaze, four helicopters were being used to water-bomb the fire.

Picture: JOHN GRAINGER Source: News Limited Firefighters spent Sunday combing the area to black-down embers to ensure the bush growing at the foot of the headland and on the sand dunes remains unburned. Police and fire investigators are now examining the area for clues about how it started. Insp Sheppard said the last bushfire at Barrenjoey Head was in the early 1980s.

Several people around the base of the headland, mainly fishermen, where evacuated by boats, with the water police, RFS and lifesavers all sending craft in case more evacuations were necessary. Insp Sheppard said that once night fell, it was too dangerous to let firefighters remain in the area due to the many cliffs, and that by then all the buildings had been protected and saved.
