NOSTALGIA This year as we look to the cultural zeitgeist, one thing truly stands out as the next influencer of weddings; Nostalgia. The pendulum has swung back and what is old seems new again. 2018 will see couples gravitate to the things they’ve cherished before. It’s said that pop-culture recycles itself every thirty years. As we await the reboot of the 1990’s there seems to be a last hurrah for the 1980’s. You don’t need to look hard to see this throwback, with the recent fascination of cassette tapes, synth based music and the popularity of the Netflix series Stranger Things. We just can’t seem to get enough of nostalgia.
One thing is certain, pop culture is forever obsessed with a nostalgia pendulum that regularly resurfaces things from 30 years ago. Watch as the cycle progresses over the next year as we break into the 1990’s. We’ve already started to see the advance of the next decade with the reboots of our most cherished movies, think of the very successful remake of Beauty and the Beast and the not so successful, Ghostbusters. Both harken to our coming of age and celebrate the best of our growing-up years.

We are at a tipping point because we’ve been so preoccupied with Edison bulbs, mason jars, and reclaimed barn siding, that there is pent up demand for the ‘what’s next’! We’re starting to see the revival of ‘80s neon fonts and retro-inspired foods like the Sloppy Joe and deviled eggs.
You can also see the fascination with nostalgia pop up in board games and group activities. It seems as though we’ve rediscovered the amusement and connection these games provide us. Something as simple as Tick-tack-toe could be a fun jumping off point for your wedding inspiration.
Imagine how cleaver it would be to incorporate X and O throughout the design of your wedding, from the invitations to graphic inspired floral arrangements. POP CULTURE You might be wondering what pop culture has to do with weddings, and surprisingly, we’ve realized the two go hand-in-hand. Throughout our trend spotting for new wedding inspiration, we see that pop culture plays such an important role in shaping the best ideas. Looking at what’s popular with interior design, food and lifestyle will help to keep your wedding ahead of the trend curve.
Incredible design ideas are everywhere, and using them in your wedding will ensure that it is a signature experience for everyone attending. It’s surprisingly easy to take pop culture trends and implement them into various parts of your wedding. FASHION Every bride has her own style and vision for her wedding day look. When it comes to selecting your wedding gown today, there are more looks to select from as designers push the boundaries, bringing innovation to the bridal runway. At this year’s Bridal Fashion Week in New York City, a spin on contemporary tradition was evident. The top trends are full of retro-revisited inspiration.
As much as pop-culture is evolving out of the retro 80’s and sliding into the 90’s, bridal fashion is evolving as well. The Fall-Winter 2018 collections at Bridal Fashion Week embodied many elements from the 80’s and 90’s, creating a resurgence of classic silhouettes by many designers. From fuller A-line gowns and pants with plunging necklines, to illusion gowns with overskirts, long trains and flowing cap capes, you will love what you’ll see. The fresh take on fashion will give you increased inspiration for your wedding day look.
A popular silhouette of the 1980’s, the ball gown, has always been a staple in the wedding gown industry. At one point it seemed as if ball gowns and A-line silhouettes were all we saw, until the fit and flare and mermaid gowns became the newest craze. This season, we continue to see fuller A-line gowns, but not quite full enough to be a ball gown.

Pant suits were a mod look of the 1970’s – 1980’s and these are walking the wedding aisle too, as designers make a second attempt to re-introduce these styles to brides.
This coming season we see capes, caplet sleeves and overblouses in many designs, combined with fabrics from embellished illusion to all over traditional lace. We watched as designers wrapped simple column dresses and short mini-dresses allowing the drama for the ceremony to be removed for the party to follow. Some dresses are much shorter than last season; perfect for a courthouse or intimate garden wedding at home.
Dressing up a column gown with a lace leather jacket or a contemporary art-inspired caplet gives it a modern edge. This look, along with simple skirts and jackets, adds a new twist. This season, we love that sleeves are more appealing for everyone. Inspiration from the 1980’s and 1990’s continue to be seen with long sleeves. This season on the runway we saw the illusion sleeve from last season evolve into full lace or long satin sleeves. So brides, get ready to welcome back the lace and satin sleeves of the 90’s.

Each season there is always a standout fabric or embellishment the designers try to introduce, and this season it’s feathers. On some gowns the feathers are so delicate it creates an effect that looks as if the bride’s movements are effortless or in slow motion.
With many designers embracing this creative look, we see a crossover from light marabou feathers to heavier ostrich feathers that create a 1930’s Hollywood glam look. Of course, in using this fabrication with feathers, layered skirts and removable overskirts assist in the uniqueness of the flow and movement. Another look from the 1980’s and 1990’s – long romantic trains and pearl strand embellished backs are amping up the drama on this season’s runways. As we step further into the 90’s, these elongated trains and dramatic draped back beauties are making a statement.
They are not for the faint of heart but are for the daring bride, combining classic and contemporary all at once. Designers are juxtaposing these fashion trends with the romantic and elegant lines of multiple silhouettes.
It used to be that the perfect fit and a great look from the front could seal the deal for brides. With the introduction of these long dramatic trains and detailed back embellishments, the back of the dress has become another strong factor for brides saying “yes” to the dress.

A couple years ago designers tried to introduce pants into their collections to a rather ho-hum response. This Fall-Winter 2018 season we see the pants coming back, but this time in a very sensual and sexy style. While suits have become the new go-to for men in the wedding party, the slim look is also being introduced to formal tuxedos this season. Sleek solid ties and fashionable shoes embraced by men can be seen in many colors and patterns including black, navy blue and shades of gray.
With the traditional wedding tuxedo and classic bow tie making a comeback it is clear that the 1980’s and 1990’s are also having an effect on formalwear. The English classic cutaway is on the horizon. With the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle it could be just the push it needs to become a future trend in the United States.

SPACE Who doesn’t love to party? Yet ‘party’ means something different to everyone. Since weddings have become so diverse, the traditional sit-down dinner and dance is often eclipsed by a more interactive and social celebration. This has also changed the required elements of what was considered ‘the standard’ reception. Now elements like soft seating and rental furniture are more often incorporated.

SIPS For cocktails in 2017, the Frose, Super Tonics, Tiki Rum drinks and punch bowls all had their moment in the sun, but what will be hot in 2018? Mixologists are opting for coldpressed juices, drinking vinegars and activated charcoal in their cocktails this year. Tequila is the new hot trend, bringing smaller regional brands to the forefront. Grapefruit will continue to be a popular flavor and soda companies are expanding their offerings to accommodate the interest in the Paloma, the cocktail that mixes tequila with grapefruit, lime juice, soda, and salt. As American palates become more accustomed to bitter flavors in food and cocktails, the Paloma is primed to become a new favorite.
The mixology craze also has bartenders looking for new flavor profiles, and the world of tea provides an interesting array of options. With everything from elegant floral notes to smoky, earthy flavors, and even kombucha (a fermented tea) combining these tea attributes with spirits makes them shine in a cocktail. Jasmine Pearl, a floral tea, combined with gin, lemon, cocci americano and mint makes an amazing Pearl Collins cocktail.
Creating new twists on classic drinks will make your wedding reception even more memorable. The mixology movement is about taking a drink many people already know, and finding new ways to highlight flavors. The popularity of Tequila has us looking fondly towards our next margarita. We’re not talking those margarita mix drinks, but the good old-fashioned fresh squeezed lime variety. These can be amped up a notch with agave syrup and sage leaves, muddled star fruit or even a scoop of ice cream, at right. These picture-perfect cocktails served shaken in a martini glass would surely be the hit at any reception.
Even if you are looking for a simple highball, mixologists are changing it up by pairing gins with spices, herbs and homemade tonics. Vintage cocktails will get new life in 2018 with antique spirits such as apricot brandy and rare rums. Instead of having flavors that are common to your guests, try getting hoppy beer or bitter cocktails that are not as familiar.

The number of great whiskies from all across Asia are increasing; from Suntory Toki and Hakushu 12 year from Japan, to Kavalan from Taiwan, and Amrut and Paul John from India.

Think about food as your chance to open the minds of your guests to things they normally wouldn’t try, then amaze them with incredible bites.
Couples are fortunate because caterers continue to evolve, taking their cues from the restaurant influence. Many caterers now offer an expanded range of options; from farm-totable and vegan, to gluten-free, as the industry continues to evolve into 2018.

STYLED FLORAL Flowers or herbs have been an integral part of weddings since the beginning of time. Wedding flowers were considered a gift of nature and have been recorded as far back as the ancient Greeks, who used flowers to make a crown for the bride to wear. It’s no surprise that flowers play such a key part in weddings today, but wedding flowers in 2018 continue to evolve. We continue to see an interest in unique foliage and blossoms, from the interesting textures provided by thistle and Celosia Brain Flowers, to the muted colors of succulents and air plants.
Floral’s organic form, combines easily with different design elements; together creating a very dramatic look. Because floral provides beautiful 3-D textures, it can easily enhance certain design elements. Choosing the right container to hold each styled floral is an important aspect to consider as you design your wedding. Sometimes designing flowers is not so much about the volume, as it is about strategic placement. Clearly, we all love over-the-top arrangements and they do have their place at a wedding. However, when you are selecting styled floral, look for thoughtfully designed placements that blend with the movement of the room. Often, the smallest floral can also have the greatest impact. TABLETOP Although the tabletop is a design element that allows unlimited ways to make a bold statement, couples often overlook this opportunity. Tabletop design has so much potential when you think past what linen and centerpiece to use. Both of those are important parts, but when combined with many other elements, your tables can be an immersive and tactile experience for your guests as they sit down for the reception.
Instead of limiting yourself with the standard table top, try thinking outside the box. There is more creativity that goes into a tabletop than just setting the table. Think about styling each place setting, not just setting the table. What do you want guests to think when they take their seats? Combining various design elements (linens, plates, glasses, centerpieces, chairs, light fixtures, etc.), will help to style each place setting. Consider the multiple layers of plates, then mix them up. Mix and match is hot in home interiors, so don’t be afraid to mix up the china for your wedding, too.

Table selection will significantly affect the overall look of the design. Long harvest-style tables, for example, provide an opportunity to design elongated centerpieces. However, the same elongated floral centerpieces would not work on a round table. Your table selection will affect significant pieces of your design and is an integral part of the decision process. Selecting complimenting pieces to style the table is your first opportunity to think of the table as a whole.

ILLUMINATION Taking advantage of the variety of lighting options available today can truly transform any space. Evaluating the space you have to work with, then deciding what kind of ambiance you want to create is where lighting can become a helpful tool. Lighting has become so much more than color washed walls, helping to create emotion and energy through accenting elements of the event. It’s the luminosity that allows for the mood of the environment to be enhanced and will highlight the look of your wedding design. Even the way you spread out different lighting fixtures can be a design element in any space, whether it’s your ceremony or reception.
Chandeliers and distinctive ceiling treatments have become popular additions for both ceremonies and receptions. From Italian lights to the chandelier-inspired installation of hanging jute rope lights, at left, lighting creates a sense of nostalgia and adds drama to the space. The selection of light bulbs can have a significant impact on the overall effect. To create the warm glow of amber, you can use Edison bulbs. These vintage inspired filament bulbs are now widely available and come in a series of shapes and wattage. Their tone pairs well with candlelight and has a warmer glow than florescent bulbs.

in and make it feel more intimate. Another way to make a volume of space more inviting is to modify the lighting. Consider dimming the lighting to create a more intimate space, or add supplemental fixtures.
Italian lights give off a soft glow that might create an atmosphere of summer nights or sitting in a casual outdoor café. Just dimming the lighting fixtures at your reception won’t quite make the same statement that a dramatic chandelier or string of lights will.
One doesn’t often think of the moody tones that can be created with the use of very saturated light. These moody tones, when combined with the amber glow of candlelight, creates an entrancing effect. Within one space you can incorporate distinct juxtaposition with the right lighting design. For this reception, at right, cool tones of blue and purple are combined with the amber glow of strategically placed uplights. This balances the amber glow of hundreds of votive candles placed throughout the space.

SIGNATURES There are certain elements that, when woven into the design of the wedding, will take on a larger presence at the festivities. These items will generally define space or create an unexpected opportunity for your guests. Signature elements stretch the boundaries of the ‘expected’, and will be the unique piece that will have your guests talking for years to come about the ‘unexpected’.
With each wedding we design, we like to think of the elements that can be amplified to create a wow factor to truly take our couples, as well as their guests, by surprise. Like the final touches on an outfit that make it complete, signature pieces bring together an incredible wedding design. Signatures catch your eye as you walk into the ceremony or reception, and they can set the tone for the entire event.
Signature pieces don’t always have to be large, detailed or complex. When you combine simple forms of pieces together, they can have great impact. Since a lot of time and effort are put into your wedding design, think about adding something a little extra to make a bigger statement. Once consumed, edible favors are soon forgotten, but the impact created with the confection buffet, at left, will be a memory that will live on long after the

wedding day. Each of these confectionery elements are very simple on their own, but when combined together and placed atop a display table crafted from a vintage canoe, they make a perfect signature for this specific wedding design.
It is important to evaluate your wedding venue and figure out what signature elements would work to assist in filling any large voids of space. By simply adding a cut vinyl graphic to the ceremony, at right, we suddenly have a gorgeous stylized aisle runner specially designed for the couple.
These vinyl graphics can be easily added to most hard surfaces. We’ve embellished mirrors, created aisle runners on the floor and even used them as directional signage getting guests from the ceremony to the reception within a large venue. Think of ways you can incorporate vinyl graphics to bring attention and direction to an important feature of your ceremony and reception design.

TRAVEL Let’s face it, of all the wedding details, the honeymoon is probably the most exciting part to plan. Where is the best place to celebrate your marriage and wind down after all the activity leading up to the big day? It used to be common to find an all-inclusive resort in Mexico, which is still a very popular option. But now, there is almost no limit on destinations, types of experiences and ways to travel; from cultural tourism to culinary excursions. The one common thread is travelers are seeking new and authentic experiences.
Right now, almost everyone is talking about over-water bungalows and surely this is the biggest trend in honeymoon travel. Polynesia comes to mind, and couples still love the remote and exotic idea of traveling to Tahiti. The thatched huts, often outfitted with luxury amenities like infinity pools, outdoor showers, two-person Jacuzzis and, of course, the glass-floored living room to view the tropical fish, are popping up on Pinterest boards everywhere. We loved the cultural experiences of Merida, which is the capital as well as the largest city of the Yucatán Peninsula. INSPIRATION: LUXE LODGE Inspired by the ‘glamping’ movement and the increased interest in close-to-home destination weddings, we married luxury and cabin in a design we titled: LUXE LODGE. Both utilitarian purpose and crafted pieces came together in a juxtaposition with a richness of furs and aged leather. With the over-abundance of farm-inspired weddings we wanted to translate the desire for a rustic aesthetic to something fresh and new. We crafted a design that brings together a nostalgic feeling through collected embellishments. Our backdrop, the warmth of the raw wood tones of barn-wood siding, encased in a rustic lodge. To this palette we added light neutrals creating layers of interest.
For the ceremony we selected simple unfinished wood benches, which brought in the casual style. To these we added oversized fur throws and ceremony programs with a floral motif. We used glowing candles and square iron and glass lanterns, finished in a rich weathered patina, to illuminate the ceremony aisle. An aisle runner of geometric oranges, teals and creams added a subtle pop of color and texture to the ceremony and complimented the color scheme of the stationery. Above the aisle we constructed a wood beam structure to enhance the lodge design.

We were inspired by all things woodsy and mixed this with metals of gold, silver and bronze. Rich browns were the undertone of the design with wood floors and wood furnishings. To this we added the glow of Edison bulbs in a custom made canoe chandelier.
We added a graphic touch with neat rows of placecards held in small bundles of hand-tied sticks. When placed on a long wooden sideboard, the placecard table became a focal piece to the reception space.
As guests entered the reception space, they experienced a large harvest-inspired table, with a twist. We selected high-top perching tables, which were placed side by side to create a long dinner table. For the seating we selected distressed leather barstools with a rounded back and silver metal frame. This became the centerpiece of the reception. Around the table we placed a well appointed bar, pods of lounge seating and the piÊce de rèsistance, an 18 foot long buffet built out of a canoe that would serve as a confection buffet.
HANDMADE ELEMENTS SPECIAL TOUCH INTO THE WEDDING CELEBRATION

The details on the reception table were precise, but not fussy. We selected a distressed black and white striped linen napkin and beautiful pearlized-handle flatware. To create interest at each place setting and to tie the look together with the placecard table, we used more handtied bundles of sticks on which we would rest over-turned forks. A tortoise shell handle on the butter knife would add another level of dimension. We selected simple hand-blown stemware in a trio of sizes which paired with the cylindrical glass votive holders.
Square silver leaf charger plates added a luxury look to the table and the repetition of the place settings created a dramatic impact. Atop the chargers we
that featured an organic tree-like veining along with the colorful menu card.

Down the length of the table we placed lavender plants growing in a variety of cream and grey ceramic pots.
Our lounge featured long black tufted leather sofas, which flanked oversized silver timber coffee tables. Fur pillows were used to repeat the soft texture of the fur throws used in the ceremony. Woodland accents like acorns, green apples and wood-hewn bowls would play artfully with trios of lanterns that could be repurposed from the ceremony.
The grandame of all weddings to us is the wedding cake. Trending this year are taller cakes featuring color and hand painting. Hours and hours of handwork brings out the signature elements of this wedding cake, at right. The cake featured hand-stenciled patterns, a deer trophy silhouette and antlers.

DETAILS AND
INSPIRATION: BLANC Inspired by the mid-century modern resurgence, we envisioned a throwback to the 1960s. Sub-atomic vibes, retro-inspired color palettes, shapes and finishes would all play a strong influence in our design. Thinking of space-age interiors and the geometric patterns of the era, we infused the scene with modern interpretations of these bygone elements. The effect could be summed up in one word: BLANC.
The ceremony would be set as a modern sanctuary highlighted with sleek white metal benches, which flanked the aisle, creating the linear effect of church pews. The aisle made a statement with a boldly patterned graphic runner in grey and yellow featuring a modern interpretation of the quilting pattern called ‘wedding ring.’ This geometric pattern would be replicated with a coordinating pattern featured on the ceremony program and the menu card used during the reception. White cut vinyl lettering with the couple’s names and wedding date marked the start of the walk down the aisle and silver cut vinyl phrases were added to the bench seating for the ceremony including the verses, ‘to have and to hold’ and ‘to love and to cherish’.

The cut vinyl graphics in the reception space added a unique touch which made the space custom to the couple. The classic calligraphy font stood out against the modern trendy pieces used for the ceremony design.
The wedding aisle led to the altar constructed from a tower featuring textured plastic panels and acrylic columns in differing heights. The acrylic altar would hold a myriad of modern glass cylinders with floating candles, which cascaded down the tiers of the columns. Atop, sat a modern six component wedding cake of stacked forms featuring solid, brick and diamond patterns in white, grey and yellow. Dramatic purple uplighting would accent the altar space and add interest.
Beyond the ceremony, we designed reception tables featuring white metal waterfall-style tables and more white gloss metal benches. The tablescape featured clusters of orange roses in clear square vases. Guest names were applied

to the benches with silver cut vinyl.
Each placesetting included a yellow cut vinyl ‘placemat’ applied to the metal tables. Modern square plates framed square yellow menus. A trio of glassware and sleek flatware completed the look.
The entire reception was surrounded with white string curtain that curved around the tables, separating the dinner space from the cocktail lounge and bar. Suspended above the lounge were three large atomic sprocket chandeliers with glass orbs and metal rods. These played well with our retro vibe. The bar and lounge took on a supper club feel, providing a relaxed atmosphere for guests to mingle.
The bar was appointed with graphic black and white champagne bottles, bulbus vases and gold stemmed martini glasses.

We continued the vinyl graphics to personalize the 60’s-inspired coffee table with the names of the bride and groom. The bar would also bring attention to the festivities of the day. By adding in maize colored sofas, we provided extra space for guests to lounge and enjoy entertainment while, of course, sipping on their martinis!
