DESTINATIONS Each year we survey the nuances of how couples are choosing to tie the knot. With each new season we see trends that coincide with the ever-evolving concept of what a wedding means for the couple, their family and their guests. This year as we look to the cultural zeitgeist, one thing truly stands out as the next influencer of weddings; Destinations. This year we see the growing intent to create a wedding ‘experience’ and one glance at social media shows couples wanting to create buzz-worthy weddings filled with unique experiences to be captured with beautiful images. The once popular rehearsal dinner, ceremony and reception model is now making way for an immersive experience and many are choosing a destination to host the bevy of activities that have defined the nuptial weekend.

One thing is certain, destination weddings don’t just mean a tropical location that a select number of friends and family will jet off to. Now, destination weddings encompass a range of options, from romantic backdrops in Ireland or Italy to local destinations on the north shore (our other coast) and quaint country inns that can host an entire weekend of activities.

Both types of destination weddings bring with them the expectation of planned events

along with time to enjoy the unique opportunities in the area. And, while the foreign destination wedding was once used to reduce the guest count, couples are increasingly surprised by the number of family and friends that are choosing to attend their weddings.

Don’t necessarily think a destination wedding is the cheap alternative it used to be. There are now more options than ever and if you want to provide a range of experiences and activities for your guests, large groups can certainly impact the budget.

There can be fantastic perks to a destination wedding, however, including some great packages and added perks for the couple based on the number of rooms booked with the property, but don’t think you will get the best pricing or the best location by shopping online. Working with a travel agent will provide you with the information you need to make the best decisions and to get the best pricing. Most have traveled and stayed in the best destinations, so they can give you an accurate account of each of the options.

If there is something that is extremely important to you like local fare, crafted cocktails or an amazing spa, your agent can suggest a property that will provide everything you are looking for.

Both local and travel destinations are amping up their offerings to create something special, not only for the couple but for the entire guest list. This is great particularly for the millennial guest looking for an adventure, this gives them a chance to seize an experience with much of the planning taken care of. From boat trips and campfires at local destinations to private pools and VIP cabanas in tropical locals, your guests can experience fun adventures and exclusive amenities that they may not normally have access to. Whatever you choose, you will find your guests reminiscing over all the elements that you incorporate in your destination wedding.

POP CULTURE Everything you see in the world around us is fair game for wedding inspiration. Pop culture plays such an important role in shaping our vision. That’s why we explore what’s popular in interior design, food and lifestyle to bring you the very best ideas. The Wedding Trend Look Book is here to help keep your wedding ahead of the trend curve. We’ve spent the last year trend spotting; throughout our travels and scouting the globe for new wedding inspiration we’ve put together a list of the elements you can fast-track into your wedding.

Incredible design ideas are everywhere, and using them in your wedding will ensure that it is a signature experience for everyone attending. It’s surprisingly easy to take pop culture trends and implement them into various parts of your wedding. Spotting these trends and incorporating them into your wedding story will surely impress your guests. Watch their delight as they recognize the trends that they have been experiencing in their surrounding world. By incorporating pop culture trends, guests can identify your wedding elements from the hottest fashions, new culinary cues, or even the latest graphic patterns they’ve seen in store windows. Guests will appreciate the thought you put into their experience.

Taking a snapshot from the fashion world, we see florals, either in abstract or traditional prints, as the ‘it’ pattern of 2019. Look for use of floral patterns in linens, stationery and fashions. Floral patterns will tie into the trend we are seeing as the pendulum is swinging

back to a more traditional aesthetic popping up in wedding style.

Natural elements will play an important part of our aesthetic lens for 2019. Watch as color starts to pop up in interior design. Bold indigo, emerald green and dark teals will move out of the kitchen and will be part of the layered look in living spaces and bedrooms. Paints, fabrics, accessories and rugs in this palette will create drama against the more neutral palette of white and off-white elements. Translating this trend to weddings, consider incorporating an accent color used at 10% with neutral colors representing the other 90%.

Anything made by hand, using sustainable materials like jute, rice paper, and clay, will be in for 2019. Watch as natural materials come into play in fashion, interiors and consumer products.

Texture seems to straddle both the fashion and interior design world as well, so watch for rich velvets in both. Other Elements like these are easily adapted to weddings and include items like homemade fabric flowers. You could incorporate this look in your reception linens and you also have more options walking the bridal runways that incorporate these handmade flowers.

Watch as wood finishes move to a more blonde look and cleaner lines emerge. Earthy colors and graphic geometric prints will play well with mixed metals. Combine brass, gold or nickel accents with either oil-rubbed bronze or aged iron accents; or metals like silver and pewter mix well with bronze and black brown metals. Layer these elements in your reception decor and you will be right on trend.

COLOR STORY As you begin discussing your wedding plans with family and friends, we promise one of the first questions you’ll hear is, “what are your wedding colors?”. This question might come right away from your bridal party since ‘wedding colors’ are usually directly associated with what color the bridesmaid dresses will be. However, wedding colors are so much more than simply the color selection for the bridesmaid gowns. Today, wedding color schemes are incorporated with every single part of the wedding design from your tabletop choices to styled floral and even the invitations guests will see weeks before your big day.

Don’t let one specific color guide your design. Instead of selecting a color first, we suggest you determine what you want your wedding experience to feel like, then focus on the colors that evoke that feeling. Get inspired by looking at home interior trends and how these color palettes can be incorporated into the perfect wedding day look. Need more inspiration? Take a look in your closet and see what tones you naturally gravitate towards. We love to turn to the fashion runways to see what fresh palettes of color best align with each wedding design and you will see all the 2019 fashion colors throughout this edition.

Just as everything else in weddings is evolving, so are wedding colors. A decade or two

Galina Pavelchak

ago couples would stick to one or two wedding colors and leave it at that. Rather than choosing a single color, today couples are opting for comprehensive wedding pallets and color schemes that can truly evoke a certain mood or ambience for your event.

Having a variety of shades of color looks great throughout your wedding. If you repeat the same color everywhere, it’s not as visually pleasing. Creating a strong color palette will combine four to five colors, including the tones of design elements. It can seem overwhelming to decide what colors to put together. In your selection, choose a variety of colors that include neutral, dominant and accent colors. Discover creative tricks to see different colors that pair naturally together, like looking to different shades of lipstick or inspiration from nature.

Colors change with each season, requiring our focus to shift to relevant trend forward palettes each year. PantoneÂŽ is one of the best color resources for your wedding design. Their forecasters select palettes for fashion and home interiors each season.

AND ACCENT COLORS

Each December they also announce the Color of the Year, which is the hue they feel most impacts the industry. They’re great at sharing the upcoming color trends that can help you choose the best colors for your wedding. For 2019, Living Coral is Pantone’s Color of the Year; vibrant, yet mellow, this color embraces design with warmth and nourishment to provide comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment.

Living Coral welcomes and encourages lighthearted activity; it embodies our desire for playful expression, optimism and joyful pursuits. Representing the fusion of modern life, coral is a nurturing color that appears in our natural surroundings and at the same time, displays a lively presence within social media.

STYLED FLORAL Although flowers have been an integral part of weddings since the beginning of time, they are also a trend that continues to evolve and change with each season, year and style. Florals can make a big statement weather you are hoping to achieve a minimalist look or a glamorous focal point; flowers can truly transform the look of your wedding day. It’s no surprise that flowers continue to play such a key part in weddings today, but wedding flowers in 2019 continue to evolve.

This year, we will continue to see the popularity of hanging florals and floral structures that transform venues. Whether it’s a centerpiece cascading from the ceiling over the head table, greenery garland draped around doorways or faux chandeliers created by bloom adorned hoops, florists and couples are getting creative, not only with the types of flowers used but how they are designed and placed to make an even bigger statement. At left, gold geometric terrariums holding plants hang from the ceiling to transform a simple brick wall into a beautiful and unique focal point for the ceremony.

Although the use of greenery is still a popular trend, we are excited to see it accompanied by color this year! Get ready for the re-introduction of color, particularly moody hues of

burgundy, orange, coral and plum. These muted colors and tones will pair wonderfully with greenery such as myrtle, eucalyptus, ferns and other natural tones from succulents, grasses, moss and even feathers!

We continue to see the use of unique foliage, blossoms and even vegetables that can add interesting texture, shape and color that you wouldn’t find in traditional arrangements. Don’t be afraid to use natural garden produce to provide interest and texture. Berries and root vegetables can add great unexpected shapes. Foliage, like ferns can add feather-like texture. At right, the use of carrots, radishes and red cabbage add an unexpected statement and stunning color to this floral centerpiece. The end result was a unique arrangement with a fresh-from-the-garden feel.

Florists are masters of design, not only when it comes to crafting beautiful bouquets and arrangements, but also when it comes to envisioning how everything will come together in your space. Don’t be afraid to ask your florist for advice when it comes to mixing colors, sizes and heights in your process.

Sometimes floral design is not so much about the volume, as it is about strategic placement throughout your space. Especially as the popularity of unconventional wedding venues like barns, warehouses and outdoor spaces continues to grow, it can be difficult to make a large space feel “full”. We love over-the-top arrangements and they do have their place at a wedding, but you

FASHION Every bride has her own style and when it comes to selecting your wedding gown today, there is a new buzz phrase, ‘Sophisticated Sexy.’ Designers are pushing the boundaries by bringing innovation to the bridal runway. At this year’s Bridal Fashion Week in New York City, a spin on contemporary tradition was more than evident. The top trends are full of innovation from retro-revisited inspiration to a new extreme in plunging necklines and let’s not forget the continued look of illusion in unlined bodices and skirts. These looks are saying, “here I am, look at me!”

As pop-culture is evolving out of the retro 80’s and sliding into the 90’s, bridal fashion is evolving as well. The Fall-Winter 2019 collections at New York Bridal Fashion Week continue to embody many elements from the 80’s and 90’s, creating a resurgence of classic silhouettes from many designers. From fuller A-line gowns to body hugging mermaid gowns and pantsuits, designers are presenting a wider range of silhouettes. Watch for a range of options from leggings with plunging necklines, to illusion gowns with overskirts, long trains and flowing cap-sleeve capes. You will love what you’ll see in 2019.

The fresh take on fashion will give you increased inspiration for your wedding day look. Collin Pierson Photography

Embrace the opportunity to try on some styles you might not have even considered. You may surprise yourself with something extraordinary, that will have you rocking your bridal runway.

A popular silhouette of the 1980’s, the ball gown, has always been a staple in the wedding gown industry. This season, we continue to see fuller A-line gowns, but not quite a full ball gown. Pantsuits were a mod look of the 1970’s – 1980’s and these are walking the runways too, as designers make a second attempt to re-introduce these styles to brides. This season we see evolving fit and flare gowns and embellishments. We watched as designers continue to experiment with the use of color, laces and embellishments.

Dressing up a column gown with a lace leather jacket or a contemporary art-inspired pearl studded sleeve gives it a modern edge. This look, along with simple skirts and capes, adds a new twist. This season, we love that sleeves are more appealing for everyone. Inspiration from the 1970’s and 1990’s, continue to be seen with long sleeves. In 2019 you will see the illusion sleeve from last season evolve into full lace or long satin sleeves; as well as bell, trumpet, bishop and circular flounce designs.

Each season there is always a standout, and in 2019 we continue to see feathers, color and now creative necklines. The once-feared off-the-shoulder, or cap sleeve, is back with the help of illusion fabric which helps to hold it up and also

FEATURING

makes it easier to raise your arms while dancing. On some gowns the feathers are so delicate it creates an effect that looks as if the bride’s movements are effortless or in slow motion.

With many designers embracing this creative look, we see a crossover from

What we love most about these colored wedding styles is that they can add a bold modern twist to even the most classic silhouettes. No matter what your style is, color is always a surprise for your guests and is sure to make a bold statement on your wedding day.

Another look from the 1980’s and 1990’s – long romantic trains and embellished capes amp up the drama on this season’s runways. As we step further into the 90’s, these elongated trains and dramatic draped back beauties are making a statement. It used to be that the perfect fit and a great look from the front could seal the deal for brides. With the introduction of these long dramatic trains, capes and detailed back embellishments, the back of the dress has become another strong factor for brides saying “yes” to the dress.

Let us not forget the guys because wedding fashions are changing for them as well. While suits have become the new go-to for men in the wedding party, the slim look is also being introduced to formal tuxedos this season. Sleek solid ties and fashionable shoes embraced by men can be seen in many colors and patterns including black, navy blue and shades of gray.

With the traditional wedding tuxedo and classic bow tie making a comeback it is clear that the 1980’s and 1990’s are also having an effect on formal wear with the resurgence of the white dinner jacket. Slim fit, bold ties and striped double breasted suits with wider lapels are on the horizon. The guys are stepping up their look with their own version of ‘Sophisticated Sexy’, called ‘Dashingly Dapper.’

SPACE The best memories are always made when friends and family gather. It seems as if every family or friendship has a favorite gathering place. In some families it might be the kitchen, for your favorite friendship it might be the cozy corner coffee shop. No matter where or what your gathering place is, it is an important piece of creating those special moments and memories that last a lifetime.

When it comes to your wedding environment, think about the gathering place you want to create for your guests. Think of your venue as the ultimate gathering place where your closest friends and family will come together to celebrate you and your love. Your guest list is unique to you and your fiancé, so your space for celebration should be unique as well! “Gather” won’t mean the same thing for all your guests. For your grandparents it might mean a relaxed lounge in a quiet area of the room, while your younger guests might gravitate towards a collection of high tops near the dance floor. Creating several lounge options in various locations allows your guests to choose the kind of environment they prefer. It is important to think about how you can best utilize your reception space to create an interactive gathering place for each of your guests to create their own memories.

Anna Grinets Photography

Since weddings have become so diverse, there really is no such thing as a “traditional” wedding. Creating a space that allows for more socializing and activity transforms the wedding reception into something so much more than dinner and dancing. This has also changed the required elements of what was considered ‘the standard’ reception.

Creating a sense of place at your wedding will set the tone for your reception. This is a crucial factor in taking your reception from bland to brilliant. Your personal style can finally be expressed with the range of furniture rental options now available; from the mid-century modern furnishings, to French Baroque, industrial, bohemian and even vintage looks.

Now elements like soft seating and rental furniture are more often incorporated into wedding designs. People naturally like to form conversation groups; combining furnishings in clusters and pods of seating allows them to do this effortlessly. It’s also important to think about practicality. At right, we added an oversized coffee table, providing guests a convenient place to set their drink.

SIPS Cocktails have never been so diverse and for 2019 get ready to taste flavors you would never expect. It seems there is something for everyone now and the signature cocktail may have taken a back seat to each person having their own favorite. The mixology craze has infiltrated the wedding scene and a range of full-service bartenders are now offering a beverage experience unlike anything we have tasted before.

Creating new twists on classic drinks will make your wedding reception even more memorable. The mixology movement is about taking a drink many people already know, and finding new ways to highlight flavors. Referred to as the ‘mixologist’ at the wedding, the bartender can take center stage at the reception and become an entertainment piece for guests. With many standards looking for a deviation, mixologists tend to provide cutting-edge options.

Even if you are looking for a simple highball, mixologists are changing it up by pairing gins with spices, herbs and homemade tonics. Vintage cocktails will get new life in 2019 with antique spirits such as apricot brandy and rare rums. Instead of having flavors that are common to your guests, try getting hoppy beer or bitter cocktails that are not as familiar.

Anna Grinets Photography

One big change we are seeing this year is in mocktails — non-alcoholic options where off-the-shelf fruit juices and grenadine will be replaced with house-made syrups and tonics, fermented ingredients and non-alcoholic spirits like Seedlip or craft beer from Bravus Brewing Company.

Milk shake drinks will also be popular, whether it’s a boozie concoction or the non-alcoholic alternative, at right, these will delight guests. Amp up the styling with ‘his and hers’ flavors denoted with colored straws and then garnish with a roasted marshmallow.

The mixology craze also has bartenders looking for new flavor profiles, and the world of vegetables and mushrooms provides an interesting array of options. Move over Blood Mary, bartenders will take vegetable cocktails one step further in 2019 and mix in more obscure choices such as tomatillo, chayote, fiddleheads, jicama and sunchoke. As the line between food and drink grows thinner and savory cocktails grow more popular, watch for strange concoctions like Cacio e Pepe (cheese and pepper pasta) martinis and greek-inspired gin cocktails with cucumber, mint, Greek yogurt and lemon.

TABLETOP We believe the tabletop design is an element that allows unlimited opportunities to make a bold, impactful statement. For many couples, when they think ‘tabletop design’ their thought process begins and ends with the linen and centerpiece selection. Tabletop design has so much potential when you think of all the pieces that will be placed on the table and how they can work together to make a truly spectacular environment. Combining various design elements (linens, plates, glasses, centerpieces, chairs, light fixtures, etc.), will help to style each place setting. When designed thoughtfully, your tables can be an immersive and tactile experience for your guests as they sit down for the seated dinner.

When it comes to your tabletop, making a statement does not simply mean adding more pieces to the table. If you like a clean look, juxtaposing styles and textures is a simple way to make your design stand out without it feeling crowded or overwhelming. At left, the decision to place clean and classic light-colored chargers, plates and traditional crystal glassware atop the rustic live-edge tabletop, finished with a modern slate colored chair creates an interesting and eye-catching design.

Just as color is coming back in florals, it’s now playing a big role in tablescapes. From

more saturated color options on china, to vintage stemware in vibrant colors, you can now paint with an entirely new palette. Consistently repeating a bold color selection in different shades and hues throughout various tabletop elements makes a big statement.

At right, vintage yellow canary and gold tones blend harmoniously through the china, stemware, flatware and napkin. Let the use of a bold color highlight those elements and opt for an understated yet impactful selection in other decor. We love how the bright color, paired with a clean white table top, clear acrylic menus and a minimalist garland creates a statement without an over-the-top feel.

Think about making the most of your budget and select simple, yet spectacular tabletop elements to make a big statement. A few unique and thoughtful choices can enhance a bland tabletop design into something memorable. Two of our favorite small statement options are the creative use of flatware and nontraditional place cards. These are just two options out of hundreds.

The tabletop design at left makes a big statement, but when you look closer, there are just a few enhancements from a standard table setting that make this design so beautiful. Simply swapping out the traditional flatware for a modern gold set along with the use of clear acrylic

laser cut place cards atop the rustic white salad plate sets this tablescape apart from a traditional option. Memorable tabletop design is all in the details. Every item should be chosen, placed and coordinated thoughtfully. Select one or two items that will serve as statements within each setting.

One of the hottest new trends in weddings is pushing traditional folded cardstock place cards to the wayside. Today, your place “card options are truly endless and you are sure to find a unique option that fits perfectly with your wedding style.

One beautiful option is to custom order laser cut wood or acrylic names that can be placed directly on each guest’s plate or napkin. Guests will love to see their name printed as custom decor.

Rental companies offer specialty flatware options such as gold, marble or wood sets. This is a relatively simple addition that is sure to make a statement and can be easily coordinated with other elements in your tabletop design. Whether you are using a specialty rental flatware set or the standard set provided by your caterer, think about how you can place flatware in an unexpected way on the table. Get creative with the placement and style of your utensils. Flip your flatware face down and lean them onto another element or place them at angles for more visual appeal.

BITES Ready to embrace your inner foodie with a culinary journey? Wedding menus have been forever changed thanks to popular TV shows like Top Chef and Chopped. This appetite for something different has changed the wedding culinary scene and now the guest experience includes endless menu options. The desire to have a wedding that is both unique and memorable has also increased the experimentation and creativity with wedding menus.

Couples are fortunate because caterers continue to evolve, taking their cues from the influence of trendy restaurants. Many caterers now offer an expanded range of options; from farm-to-table, vegan and even gluten-free options. The industry continues to evolve in 2019 with global fusion, presentation and serving styles. In the culinary world things move fast, this year global infusion will urge couples to showcase the traditional dishes of each family’s heritage, telling the couple’s story. Whether it’s Italian, French, Asian or Indian, the chef can design the plate and select the right complementing flavor combinations. This trend has catering teams crafting a cultural mosaic from all over the globe.

Creative culinary design will give your chef an opportunity to play with presentation making your wedding an incredible visual experience. As you are planning your wedding

menu, observe and take note while you are dining out. This can be a great source of inspiration!

If you are a more relaxed and casual couple, watch as the trend also moves towards less fussy foods or clean eating options. The combination of simple foods, with quality ingredients come together to create amazing flavors. The goal is to spark conversation through food such as sharing a charcuterie platter with table guests. Think about how you can enhance simple items by making them unique like braised short rib sliders, a Pad Thai station, live action quesadilla or flatbread station. The fun and interactive aspect of food stations will allow your guests to create their own dishes made from unique ingredients.

And just when you think the night is over; here comes the afterglow party. While late-night snacks are nothing new at wedding receptions, 2019 trends include more sophisticated requests.

WITH QUALITY

Couples want more than pizza and sliders because now it’s all about the unique eats that reflect the couple’s favorite comfort foods. Creative options like bacon-wrapped bratwursts served in scratch-baked brioche buns will steal the show – after all who doesn’t love bacon? How about breakfast foods like Egg McMuffins or stacks of mini pancakes on skewers.

Ready for the best newcomer in late night snacks for 2019; chicken and waffles! This southern treat has flourished throughout the country and has become a popular dish at many trendy restaurants. It’s the perfect marriage of salty and sweet as a small waffle is topped with a freshly-fried chicken popper then drizzled in spicy honey and maple syrup. Your menu will do the talking when you create a conversation piece by serving something spectacular and unique.

ILLUMINATION Lighting has a huge impact on our mood, perception and the overall ambiance of any given environment. Think about the difference in lighting between your favorite restaurant, bar or spa and that of a club or concert. We associate different lighting tones with different feelings and attitudes. You can control the ‘mood’ of your wedding by taking advantage of the variety of lighting options available today. These options can transform any space and make your venue completely customized. Evaluate the space you have to work with, then decide the ambiance you want to create.

For decades the intense flicker of candle light has signified the sophisticated, warm and romantic feel that most couples desire for their wedding reception. Why not take the warm flicker of candle light and magnify it to a much bigger scale? We love the idea of incorporating fire pits into your wedding design. When most people think of a fire pit they think of a cozy, casual campfire where friends can gather around and enjoy s’mores. This casual option could be a great gathering space for a barn or outdoor wedding, but we love the idea of a sophisticated take on the traditional fire pit for any style wedding. At left, the use of an ice-enclosed fire pit structure creates beautiful illumination as the flickering

flames reflect off the glossy ice.

Chandeliers continue to gain popularity and with the immense variety in lighting inventory from rental companies there are unlimited options. Today, chandeliers come in all shapes, styles and sizes and can transform a standard venue into the atmosphere of your dreams.

Whether you’re going for a classic, rustic, urban or glamorous look, there is a chandelier for you! If you have high ceilings, adding a series of chandeliers can really help to bring the space in and make it feel more intimate. If you are aiming to achieve an edgy effect that emulates the atmosphere of a trendy club, think about other unique illumination options aside from chandeliers. We love transforming everyday pieces into memorable light fixtures. At right, the use of white LED beach balls creates a statement similar to that of an upscale club or lounge.

Illumination is a great way to call attention to other decor and design choices. Think about the flowers, furnishings, and structural elements at your venue and why you fell in love with all of these individual elements.

TRAVEL There is almost no limit on destinations, types of experiences and ways to travel; from cultural tourism to culinary excursions, but the one common thread is travelers are seeking new and authentic experiences. Let’s face it, of all the wedding details, the honeymoon is probably the most exciting part to plan. Where is the best place to celebrate your marriage and wind-down after all the activity leading up to the big day? It used to be common to find an all-inclusive resort in Mexico, which is still a very popular option. But now, the sky is the limit.

Right now, almost everyone is talking about cultural tourism and adventure travel, so why not incorporate this trend into your honeymoon plans. Instead of the traditional beach, change it up for a romantic destination like Venice, Italy. A romantic suite with butler service offers a relaxing way to enjoy this beautiful city. Indulge in a private water taxi from the airport, then consider varying your stay by booking a couple of hotels. Venice is such an amazing city for a stroll, so consider a hotel close to Piazza San Marco for several nights and then another near the Rialto Bridge for the remainder of your trip, allowing you to experience much of the city by foot. A day trip to Murano makes a great excursion and selecting a hand-blown piece of crystal will make the perfect souvenir.

Exotic locations provide the opportunity to soak up the indigenous culture and over-water

S Hansche

bungalows seem to be another craze in honeymoon travel. Polynesia always comes to mind first, and couples still love the remote and exotic idea of traveling to Tahiti.

The thatched huts, often outfitted with luxury amenities like infinity pools, outdoor showers, two-person Jacuzzis and, of course, the glass-floored living room to view the tropical fish, are popping up on Pinterest boards everywhere. It used to be that you had to travel to the far-flung South Pacific to experience the ultimate in honeymoon lodging. Not anymore. Now, these luxe sea huts can be found at popular resorts like Sandals Royal Caribbean in Montego Bay, Jamaica; El Dorado Maroma in Riviera Maya, Mexico, and Azul Paradise in Bocas del Toro, Panama.

While these new Caribbean bungalows are set in beautiful bays, their waters don’t quite compare with the picture perfect crystalline lagoons of the South Pacific, an experience all unto its own.

INSPIRATION: COSTAL Taking our cue from the serenity of a spa environment, we designed a wedding experience that centered on the Zen principles of design with signature Asian-inspired elements. Adaptation of other cultures continues to bring new ideas for weddings and borrowed customs help to create signature style. Each step of the wedding day was infused with natural and earthy environments.

We envisioned a design with a reflection of Zen design principles. Within states of active calm, solitude and tranquillity, we find the essence of creative energy. With a color palette of golds, coppers and whites along with the minty green of a bluebirds eggs and smoky blacks, we created an overall concept that was warm and enveloping. The Zen principle Datsuzoku signifies a reprieve from the conventional, exemplified when a well-worn pattern is broken. We conjured this creativity to use weathered lanterns in various worn black and natural finishes, each with glowing candles. We hung them from jute ropes and scattered them randomly over the head table adding the shimmer of flickering candle light.

The natural finishes tied in with the trend we have been scouting in home interiors and fashion; both in the tone and materials we used. For reception design, we suggest you

Anna Grinets Photography

start with the head table as a focal point and work outward from there. For this design, we created a large focal point with the harvest-style head table which featured a rustic handhewn finish. We paired this with the natural element of succulents in concrete containers lined in unison down the center of the long table.

The Zen principle, Kanso, dictates that beauty and utility need not be overstated, overly decorative or fanciful. The overall effect is clean, fresh and neat. It incorporates naturally occurring patterns and rhythms.

Each meticulously set place setting, at right, features a trio of gradient smoky glassware with a rich black water glass, a silver/black wine glass and a smoke glass champagne flute, which pairs perfectly together. The repetition of rustic ribbed glass chargers in gunmetal and silver leaf framed Asian-inspired china with a gold joined-circle pattern over bluebird-egg green. We wrapped each plate with a silver satin napkin folded like a narrow karate belt. On top, we set a bowl to feature the soup starter and accompanied it with a set of authentic chopsticks.

START WITH THE FOCAL POINT AND WORK OUTWARD FROM THERE

HEAD TABLE AS A

To add some sparkle, we scattered speckled gold votive candles down the length of the table and accented each place setting with a hand-made place card and menu with a tropical leaf motif. Modern silver flatware finished off the look. A lighter wood tone on the crossbacked chairs added another dimension to the darker toned table.

To soften the look of the worn wood head table we selected beautiful gold threaded linens for each guest table. On these tables we incorporated tall white bulbus glass vases featuring a stylized floral that included a combination of clustered Phalaenopsis orchids and Papyrus grasses. This arrangement added height and created a grand statement around the reception space. Weathered pewter

Repeating patterns throughout your design creates effortless drama. The cake mimicked the whimsical design of the china and lanterns by repeating the pattern of joined circles in bluebirdegg green finished with stripes of gold basket weave. Hand-painted sugar orchids topped off this confectionery masterpiece.

The cake was placed on a gold threaded linen with organic graphic lines to coordinate with the guest tables. Next to the cake we placed additional weathered lanterns to add a warm glow. Together, the design created a harmonious and unique atmosphere for this signature wedding.

INSPIRATION: TREND WEDDING Would you ever allow someone you don’t know plan your wedding? Probably not, but Matt & Kay did just that! As winners of the $25,000 Trend Wedding presented by The Wedding Guys, their wedding aired live on ABC affiliate KSTP TV’s Twin Cities Live show in Minneapolis. The twist? Twin Cities Live viewers voted on every aspect of the wedding. From the venue to the catering, wedding gown, attendants attire, table settings, flowers, photography style, cake and even the honeymoon. We took all the selections and designed a signature wedding especially for Matt & Kay.

While getting to know Matt & Kay we discovered Kay’s Laotian heritage. The couple was excited to embrace both the traditions of a Laos Baci ceremony and the traditional American ceremony and reception, so we embarked on creating two ceremonies.

The March winter wedding would allow us to create a light and airy feel inspired by the venue’s tall arching windows. Wanting to embrace both ceremonies, we designed a towering circular chiffon canopy with a floral and greenery crown. Large floral pieces were used as tie-backs to create an opening in the drape. The Laotian ceremony took place first, followed by the traditional American ceremony. With the over-abundance

Studio 220 Photography

of rustic-inspired weddings, we translated our desire for a rustic aesthetic to something fresh and new. We crafted a design that created a nostalgic feeling through collected embellishments. Our backdrop, the warmth of the sunlight through the architectural windows. To this palette we added dark tones creating layers of richness and depth.

For the ceremony, we selected classic gold chiavari chairs for a formal style. Programs for both the Laotian and American ceremonies were intentionally propped up on the chairs. Budding branches of pinks and merlot were added into the traditional American ceremony as we revealed spring coming out of winter. Flowers can add a subtle pop of color and texture to any ceremony, and they complemented the couple’s invitation suite.

We were inspired by the time of year, as the long Minnesota winter gave way to the beginning of spring and mixed this with warm colors of gold, silver and bronze. Rich mahogany and bronze were added to balance the overall design.

ADD A SUBTLE

As guests entered the reception space, they passed through a chiffon draped doorway to the sight of ‘LOVE’ letters where the wedding cake was proudly presented. TV viewers had chosen a dark mahogany wood farm table, and 40-foot-long traditional head table with mirrored table tops in a patina finish. We brought in place settings of eclectic antique pieces as a juxtaposition to the clean-lined contemporary interior of the grand venue. Antique chargers, china and crystal were the surprising WOW factor in the tabletop design. The focal point of the head table was the happy couple, Matt & Kay, framed between two gold trumpet vases featuring tall blooming branches.

tables. For the seating we utilized lighter

The details on the reception table were precise, but not fussy. We selected antique gold chargers, a “country style” blush linen napkin tied in a knot at each place setting adding a sense of luxury to the rustic tables, while the repetition of the place settings created a dramatic impact. Garlands of flowers and varied size pillar candles became table runners on the long guest tables. Atop the chargers lay the menu cards featuring the options available on the various culinary action stations.

As the sunlight dimmed in the early evening hours, soft amber lighting embraced the ballroom architecture in its nostalgic glory. The ceremony and reception décor was selected with a timeless elegance with trend forward elements to accentuate Matt and Kay’s romantic vision. INSPIRATION: KATE SPADE Inspired by the iconic designer, Kate Spade, who brought so much joy to women through her bold patterns and vivid colors, we created a wedding design as a tribute to this amazing designer. We celebrate the life of Kate Spade whose immense talent had an immeasurable impact on American fashion.

Our ceremony is set as a modern sanctuary highlighted with sleek white acrylic chairs that featured alternating rows with a signature Kate Spade black and white chevron pattern. Tall white gloss columns flanked the aisle to create a dynamic linear effect. Atop each column sat an oversized gloss finial and clusters of coral roses in white ceramic vases. Large arrangements of pavĂŠ-styled amaryllis in white planters were placed between the columns. The aisle made a statement with a bold graphic quote in metallic gold cut vinyl applied to the grey and white marble patterned runner.

Hedges lined the ceremony and enveloped the seating. We created an altar from a weathered silver leaf Cyprus table upon which we placed more white gloss finials and

Anna Grinets Photography

clusters of rose centerpieces in the PantoneÂŽ Color of the Year - Living Coral. We backed the alter with a modern floral-patterned wall featuring layered gold roses.

Beyond the ceremony, we designed a stunning head table building upon a gloss white table with bulbus spindle legs. We added a pop of color to contrast with the white table by using colorful coral roses in a myriad of white ceramic vases and green hedge-style balls in gold mirrored vases. More gloss white finials tied the reception design to the ceremony.

Above the head table we hung an organic cluster of silver striped orb lighting fixtures. The table was set with alternating patterns of ChameleonÂŽ chairs, featuring Blade Kaleidoscope and black and white Moderne chair backs. Each place setting sparkled with the gold rimmed china in Tiffany Blue and finished with streamlined gold flatware. Even the menu was trimmed in metallic gold. The

Anna Grinets Photography

tablescape also featured simple black napkins that were playfully tied with black and white polka dot ribbons.

For glassware we selected a trio of mixand-match stemware, combining a simple red wine glass with a decadent goldaccented water glass and Champagne flute. The tabletop was finished with gold and silver fingerling votive holders and a gilded pear was placed at each setting as a nod to our theme ‘Pretty and Witty make the Perfect Pair’.

The guest tables featured black gloss tables with Blade Kaleidoscope Chameleon® chairs. We chose pink china for the guests and a wide black and white stripe napkin. We juxtaposed the coral floral arrangements with black gloss finials and chose grey and white marble-handled flatware.

The dessert table featured a collection of cakes with perky patterns. We created a show-stopping display with a gold marble bar, hedge wall backdrop and a gold mirror cut-out of ‘Sweets’.

Separating areas of your reception creates a completely customized atmosphere. The entire lounge was surrounded with gold square mylar chains that curved away from the tables to create separation between the dinner space and the cocktail lounge and bar. The lounge featured a gold-tufted bar and gold display shelves that held green ball topiaries and graphic bottles of 9.5 Cold Wine Brut. Modern white high-top tables flanked the bar and soft seating featured an Atomic sofa in charcoal and curved-backed chairs in smoke grey with gold framing.

All the elements blended together to create a wedding that was both whimsical and modern. Each detail layered with the next would create an experience that evoked Kate Spade’s signature style.
