STRUCTURES Without a doubt, we are most excited by the newest trend in weddings: Structures. Imagine having the ability to create your own reception space. Now, more than ever when searching for the perfect venue, couples are looking to unique spaces to host their receptions. If space allows, many are choosing to construct their reception site and host their wedding at their home or the home of their parents. Recent advances in tents have expanded the options to include glass walls, arched roofs and even clear ceilings. While there are many tent options, structures create an impact that appears more than just temporary.
Constructed from modular panels, structures can be designed to create unlimited space. They can expand from the end gable wall, to any length necessary to create the perfect amount of space for your event. Doorways and windows can be added, or you could choose to use glass panels for all of the walls, giving a fantastic view from the inside or out. Consider using an overhang to create a porch effect, which can provide additional open-air space for your reception and covering in case of inclement weather.

and other amenities. As you can imagine, the construction of a structure is very involved, incorporating flooring, walls and ceiling components. Plan for a week of installation including time to embellish with decor and several days to dismantle.
A structure will also allow you to include elements that you may not be able to include in other tents. Because the structure is rated to support more suspended weight, you will be able to add large scale chandeliers and truss for lighting. For this structure, at right, we selected three oversized circular chandeliers, each with a waterfall of hundreds of glass balls.
Special effects lighting allowed us to change the look and feel of the space throughout the evening. We strategically added window panels behind the head table to best take advantage of the landscape, which was lit at night, adding a dramatic effect. The LED dance floor also added to the overall look of the space and provided additional ambient light throughout the evening.

STRIKING A BALANCE
We especially like to design with clear top structures. Adding a magical effect to the setting, the reception started with a bright daytime look with natural lighting and ended with a luxe club-inspired feel with accent lighting and chandeliers.
Even the floor offers a variety of treatment options from carpet and wood, to something more sleek like the white gloss floor used at right. This, along with inset acrylic floor tiles, allowed us to use both uplighting and downlighting to create a unique effect.
The design palette of a structure is endless. The clean lines and minimal components, allow you to create any look inside; from something more traditional with ceiling draping, to a

more chic and modern environment.
Don’t limit yourself to using structures for just the traditional sit-down dinner. If you want an outside reception that has more of a cocktail reception flair, consider open-air structures, sans walls. These will provide shade for your guests and a little protection from a passing shower.
Elements like paper lanterns or Italian lights are a perfect accent to an open air structure. By using a series of individual structures, you can even create a little village with a unique function for each structure. Consider one structure for the bar, one for the entertainment and another for guest seating.
No matter what type of structure you choose, it will be an exciting surprise for your guests, as they arrive to discover a reception space that was designed and built especially for you.

POP CULTURE What does a pop of indigo blue have to do with weddings? Right now maybe nothing, but within the next year don’t be surprised to see a pop of navy as a new wedding trend. How do we know? It’s simple, we’ve been trend spotting! One of the best ways to ensure your wedding is ahead of the trend curve, is to check out what is happening now in pop culture.
For us, we are always scanning the ‘what’s hot’ in the categories of interior design, culinary and lifestyle. Pop culture trends are usually easily translated into elements of the wedding celebration. Incorporating them into your reception will ensure that your guests experience will relate to the latest craze; whether it is the trend colors they are seeing in fashion, the new culinary cues they get while dining out, or the patterns and design aesthetics that they might have just seen at Target®. Great design ideas are everywhere, and by widening your horizons beyond the current trends in weddings, you will be able to create a signature experience.
In 2015, take your cue from the interior design industry. A pop of blue will replace that pop of red you may have remembered from a few seasons past. Traditional, bold patterns like damask or paisley, will be hot, as will anything mid-century modern. Gold will be a dominant player, and cowhide, yes, cowhide will be everywhere in 2015. Earth tones will also be big on the interior side, which tie back to the forecasted colors we’ll talk about

The pale driftwood look is resurfacing, so expect to see white-washed looks emerging again in home interiors. Watch for contemporary elements combined with vintage, for example a rustic table with mod chairs. All of these interior trends blend naturally with the design of any wedding.
When we look to the culinary scene, we are really inspired. The best ideas come from fine dining and high end clubs. Tequila and its cousin, mezcal will be the liquor of choice in 2015. Like tequila, this Mexican spirit is made from the agave plant. While tequila is made only from the blue, mezcal is made from a variety of other species. Brilliantly, bartenders are even infusing them into ice cubes with citrus juice and agave nectar.

Lifestyle is the third element we look at to trend spot. How we live offers great inspiration that can help define the wedding. The craft movement in general has exploded with almost anything imaginable available on Etsy. There is a sense of authenticity and something extra special about anything that is hand made. These elements can be an interesting addition and often even a highlight of the wedding. Introducing guests to artesian elements, or highlighting a local artist that has handcrafted a favor especially for each guest, creates a lasting impression.
Finally, take your cue from mainstream fashion, at left. Statement pieces like chandelier earrings and anything with bangles, will be hot in 2015. Watch for leather and feathers, which are all over the fashion runways.

COLOR STORY Every season, we take notice of color as it plays a major role in the evolution of any wedding design. We always start by determining the ‘feel’ of the wedding experience, not the ‘look’, so, color is NEVER the first thing that we decide on when creating a signature wedding. As the experience develops, we look to the fashion runways and hot home interior trends to best align our vision for the wedding day with the freshest palette of current colors.
Because color plays such a significant role in the creation of the day, you will likely get tired of hearing, ‘What are your wedding colors?’ Even just a few years ago, color for weddings meant primarily what you were going to dress your bridesmaids in. Color today, will in the end, weave through almost every element that we touch; from the graphic of the invitation, to how the food is presented on the plate.
Color can include your lighting, linens, decor elements and yes, even your culinary decisions. With any good interior design, we suggest picking a palette of color, not just one. Remember to use color like an artist, not pick a color as your ‘theme’. Even for a monochromatic look, you are going to want a variety of shades, not just the exact same color repeated everywhere. A strong palette will combine four to five colors and include all of the tones you are using among your design elements. Consider what are your neutrals, dominant and accent colors and use them appropriately. For accent colors, a good rule of Color of Time

Stumped on putting colors together? Look to mother nature as she pairs the most inspiring of all color combinations. Cut open a papaya for example to see the vibrant orange that pairs beautifully with the softer greens, yellows and pop of black.
Pantone® is the color authority and a great resource to discover the upcoming color trends. For 2015, Marsala is Pantone’s Color of the Year; a naturally robust and earthy wine red. It’s already walking the fashion runways and will be ever present on the red carpet. Marsala will surely be hot for cosmetics since its grounded red-brown tones provide a natural earthiness.

FASHION We believe every bride has her own style and vision for her wedding day look. When it comes to selecting your wedding gown, there are more looks to select from then in past seasons. Trending for 2015, we see the continued resurgence of sleeves and mysterious illusion necklines. New this year is the revival of tradition, as we see romantic voluminous ball gowns, high necklines, and A-line silhouettes filled with sparkle, bold patterns and 3-Dimensional flowers. As the popular PBS television series Downton Abbey and the 2013 hit movie Gatsby created quite the stir in bridal fashion in the last year, we are seeing this quickly fading in 2015. As tradition takes a more center stage in wedding design, overall, prepare for more romantic looks and less red carpet sexy glam. If you dare to be edgy, we also saw designers taking a major leap by incorporating the crop top into silhouettes. Welcome back to the 1980’s!
Gracing the runways at the Couture Bridal Market Fashion Week for 2015, the gowns embodied a dreamy vision, ultra-feminine, yet subtly glamorous look, all without being overly revealing. From soft sheaths and fit and flare gowns with long exaggerated or detachable trains, to embroidered fluted skirts and grandiose embellished ball gowns, silhouettes in 2015 will be varied. in pastel shades of mint green, lavender, primrose, gold champagne and blush create lightheartedness on tradition.
Lace will always be a favorite fabric for wedding gowns, but in 2015 the incorporation of lace takes on a new accent in bold design elements. With luxurious Chantilly and re-embroidered laces, layers of sheer colored tulle with lace accents between the layers, allow for an air of mystery about the silhouette. Chantilly, Venetian and Calais lace are extremely popular, and now we see flowing fabrics taking center stage including silk satin, crepe and charmeuse.
With more and more emphasis being placed on the intricate embroidery and painstaking hand beaded work taking hours to complete, (with some overall embellished gowns hand detailed for over 400 hours), this is a true test of couture. Point d’Esprit and use of transparent French net overskirts or sheer-illusion dresses, shows the bride’s natural form literally taking a nod from haute couture evening gown collections.

Utilizing this form, designers are allowing for the little white dress, or more form fitting underskirt, to be displayed at the reception by removing the over skirt. This year the long train is IN and detachable train designs in organza, edged in bold lace, just evoke mystery and ethereal romanticism. Some of the bold lace patterns are called “Tattooing� where the lace pattern, either re-embroidered or laser cut, is hand stitched to the gown. This idea is often expanded into custom veils. This season, the length of trains are extended. To this, add a cathedral veil which will uniquely elongate the flow of the gown. We love this as a signature look for 2015 brides.
2015 will continue seeing designers move silhouettes forward; dazzled with heavy embroidery illusion bodices, sparkling and beaded embellishments. For a number of seasons, designers have been working to create a version of the sleeve. With the help of the illusion fabrics, they have created beautiful sleeves that brides will embrace with graceful detailing and romantic appeal. Taking many different forms, sleeves have been embraced on the red carpet. The influence of sleeves will translate from the fashion week runways, seamlessly to the wedding aisle.
The designers are using illusion as a tool in their fabric selection to create the effect of a strapless silhouette, while still providing a sheer covering to the neckline and now even sleeves. Illusion fabric can be as varied in its use as the choice of sleeve, from long fitted

sleeves, to short cap sleeves, or even no sleeves at all. The illusion neckline now plays

with crystals, beads, pearls and on some gowns, is so sheer it creates an effect that looks as if these are tattoos of embellishment. What we love about the use of illusion is how it elongates the gown, drawing attention to the face of the bride.
The illusion necklines for the designers’ 2015 collections took center stage on the runways this season. We encourage all brides to embrace the elegant option with lace and beaded appliquÊs providing a stunning alternative to the standard strapless gown. The illusion is so sheer you can hardly see it. The interesting aspect about the use of illusion fabric this year is designers are putting more stones and crystals on them.
Another huge trend we saw walking the runway this season is the crop top. Taking their cue from the ready-to-wear fashion runways, bridal designers are showing more midriff this year in various forms, from sheer cutouts to skirts with crop top bodices.

Deep plunging necklines are not the only design that’s hot off the runway. You can also count on the deep plunging backs for the bride that is willing to venture into being more daring.
A plunging back does not have to always mean a wide open back. You can enhance the appearance of the back by crisscrossing lines of strings or jewelry strands. You can also utilize embellished illusion fabric that will enhance, but not take away from the overall look. In 2015, watch as the style for men will also allude to a more hipster, dapper and distinguished style.
Men’s suits are also continuing their fashion forward look with plaid. Not just in a Tartan Kilt, but also as suits and tuxedo jackets. Plaid is an unexpected alternative to the everyday or formal dress code. The look is presently enjoying a modish revival that lands outside men’s standard routines on the runways of Italy, France and Russia.

GRAPHIC Everything is going graphic, and we are seeing bold patterns everywhere. From the bold oversized floral prints seen in fashions, to the multicolored prints we are seeing in home interiors. BIG is the statement for 2015. Pattern can be used in so many ways. We like to take elements that are generally devoid of graphics and make them ‘pop’. A bold graphic statement is a great replacement for the standard white aisle runner and adds a big impact to the ceremony design. We’ve conjured up anything from red polka-dots, to a 1970’s ‘Partridge Family’ retro pattern, in order to create a punch right from the start. For an all-over patterned effect, we’ve sourced heavy upholstery fabrics which work well for the aisle. Fabric stores are great inspiration. On our New York Bridal Fashion Week trips, we often find ourselves at Mood (made famous by Project Runway) bringing back the latest patterns that catch our eye.
Customizing your aisle runner with printed graphics is also an option. Consider taking a graphic detail from your invitation and create an emblem with your names and wedding date. While this is generally done at the start of the aisle, we like to use graphics closer to where you say your vows, so that this graphic detail shows up in your wedding photos.
Consider being a bit graphic with an eclectic selection of postage stamps. Many invitations require several stamps. A selection of various denominations can create a nostalgic

graphic look and add interest as your guests pull your invitation from their mailbox.
Enhancements in specialty services like laser and die cutting have also made available the most intricate and delicate graphic designs.
Typography can also be used as it’s own graphic element and large bold designs with perfectly placed type, making your design dramatic and impactful. Graphic type can show up in unique ways like this laser cut monogram, at right.
Think about how graphic elements can tell a story and be dotted across the wedding in unexpected places. Consider graphics on candles, drink menus, table tops and mirrors.
All-over patterns are hot for stationery, whether as an invitation enclosure, menu or place card. We find it particularly interesting when these bold graphics are

incorporated into letterpress invitations, which adds an additional dimension with the depressions and varied colors.
Unique stationery materials will certainly set your wedding apart. Consider elements like acrylic, metal or even wood veneers. The introduction of your wedding via the ‘Save the Date’ card and the wedding invitation will be your first opportunity. Surprise elements continue to appear in invitations, ranging from exciting new materials, to techniques that include metallic foils and new printing methods. SPACE Who doesn’t love to party? Yet ‘party’ means something different to everyone. Since weddings have become so diverse, the traditional sit-down dinner and dance is being replaced by a more interactive and social setting. The introduction of designed space has had a major impact, as the new trends have transformed the element of what was considered ‘the standard’ reception into something so much more.
Instead of the cocktail hour with high top tables and passed hors d’oeuvres, we suggest creating a varied landscape with a built out bar. Include soft seating with furniture to define an environment that feels more relaxed and inviting for your guests.
Just as all parts of the wedding experience have evolved, one aspect that is always constant, is the need to create a sense of place. Lounge generally starts with developing an environment. Dimming the overhead lighting and using uplighting, can signal that the hurried activities of the busy wedding day have mellowed and now it is time to kick back, relax and enjoy a cocktail. To display statement pieces of floral, we like to add oversized coffee tables, providing guests a convenient place to set down their drink. Since guests like to form conversation groups, create several seating options to give your guests the chance to enjoy conversation. Combining furnishings in clusters and pods of seating, allows your

Lounges can easily be added around your dance floor for people to enjoy the entertainment. They can also be created in quieter surroundings where guests can have intimate conversations.
For this setting, at right, we opted to create outdoor seating for guests to enjoy the coveted summer weather. Sleek modern white sofas created a statement piece on the lawn, while small groupings of silver spindle tables provided a space for guests to set down their cocktails. Small floral accents and plush graphic pillows completed the look.
To reinforce the modern aesthetic look, small cocktail tables were grouped in clusters along with white acrylic arm chairs.

We think about aspects that make the space feel warm, inviting and interesting. Pillows are great pieces that can help bring in your accent color, or repetition of patterns or textures you have chosen.
The lounge concept can overtake your entire reception. We create receptions that are a mix of lounge and smaller table configurations, making the entire evening a more organic experience. Large club chairs, at left, combined with oversized coffee tables, provide a great space for small groups to converse. Keep in mind that summer nights can get cool. If you are having a reception outdoors, consider including a fire pit where guests are sure to gather around.

Small lounging cabanas, at right, also create a sense of space and create an interesting partition between the various parts of the reception. These provide a little separation while still feeling part of the whole.
Rental furniture is now more widely available and pulling together pieces will add a great punch. Bar stools and club chairs are available, allowing you to create a lounge that will fit any style.
Dividing the space into several areas will make the overall reception feel more intimate, leaving a spot for dancing, lounging, eating and mingling.
Some designs can be very elaborate and some quite simple. It all depends on the room you are working in, your design aesthetic and your vision of how your guests will enjoy their evening. In designing a lounge, keep in perspective the room is for relaxing and socializing.

LUMINOSITY Lighting has the ability to transform space, and can be as varied in its application as the ways we bring light into darkness. Lighting brings great depth; illuminating volumes of space or accenting individual event elements. Luminosity for weddings can mean so much more than just LED up lighting and color washed walls. Creating emotion with light and color, while never letting the guests know the mechanics behind it, is a designer’s sleight of hand.
Consider the patterns and textures created as light refracts from different angles. It’s the luminosity that allows for the mood to be enhanced and will complete the look. One doesn’t often think of the moody tones that can be created with the use of very saturated light. We brought warm and cool tones together for the exterior of the structure, at left; converging to create a strong visual effect to the striking contemporary edge of our design. The trick for any designer is striking a balance of contrast between cool and fiery colors.
Consider how the soft glow of Italian lights conjures up memories of summer nights and the casual ambiance of a great cafe. Hang these and you will set the tone, producing a pop of

interest and defining the experience ahead.
We created a layered effect combining glowing glass bubble chandeliers, uplit walls, pinspotted tables and an LED dance floor for the reception, at right. The refraction of light and varied dimensions allowed us to create a modern mood by combining these elements with other translucent materials, such as acrylic, and the glass walls of the structure. Elements that capture light and ones that are illuminated from within, can be easily paired together.
A variety of color created a warm and inviting effect, uniquely accenting each design element of the evening. Each centerpiece was spot lit bringing it into focus on each table.

In order to add drama to any space and create not only a source of illumination, but also another element to the overall decor, think about incorporating chandeliers. Anything is possible from glittering onyx crystal, to rustic metal ring fixtures.
By choosing incandescent lights, we took the edge off the sleek finishes which could tend to feel ultra modern and cold. The warm amber glow of these crystal pieces came together to create the lounge space featured, at left.

Even the selection of light bulbs can have a significant impact on the overall effect. To create the warm glow of amber, you can use Edison bulbs. These vintage inspired filament bulbs are now widely available and come in a series of shapes and wattage. Their tone pairs well with candlelight and have a warmer glow than florescent bulbs.
Candles, of course, are one of our favorite lighting tools. A 100 year old elm tree looks spectacular when hung with glass cone votive holders, at right.

A far cry from the preordained signature drink, the mixology movement is about an admiration for the ingredients, original recipes, and finding new ways to highlight flavors through beverages. Taking center stage at the cocktail reception, the mixologist becomes part of the show. Mixology is not just about great tasting cocktails, it’s also the science that hypnotizes guests as they are entertained by the art of mixing great libations.
Competition increases among new wine, beer and cider cocktails – which you will see in kegs – yes kegs! As we have all experienced the rise of flavored vodkas over the last year, prepare your palates for an increase in flavorful and flavored whiskeys gaining popularity, as well as spiced rums and liqueurs. Local distilleries, vineyards and breweries are taking front row on premium stocked bars with requests from couples for something much more different for their guests to experience. Hoppy beers and bitter cocktails will surge in popularity as customers seek a bit of bitterness in their refreshments.
Classics like the Negroni, ride the retro wave, but get competition from new wine, beer and cider cocktails. Sips of Tequila shots butler passed will not be uncommon – a bit different, but not uncommon! Non-alcoholic drinks like handcrafted, small-batch sodas or pressed juices are becoming increasingly popular among catering and beverage

Like chefs who are culinary designers and devout about the origin of every single ingredient, today’s mixologists are no different. Mixologists are more than mere pourers of beverages. They are known for growing their own herbs and tending home gardens; some even making their own tonics and bitters. The cocktail is becoming an extension of the kitchen so to speak. It’s a culinary art form of the liquid kind.
Small batch is big, just look at the micro distilleries that pop up almost weekly. From craft gin to whiskey, hard cider to mircobrews, craft distillers have had a huge impact on the cocktail. Crafters are also contracting with prominent mixologists, not only as post-production ambassadors, but to help craft the right spirits at the outset. This partnership is creating an entirely new generation of specialty varieties.

BITES Who isn’t a “Foodie” these days? Thanks to the Food Network, our culinary horizons have been expanded. Food is not just a part of the wedding checklist. For us, it is an opportunity to treat your guests, expand their palate and excite their taste buds. We love to open their minds to items they normally wouldn’t ever think to try and watch them be astonished! In 2015, we are going to see caterers continue to take on more and more restaurant influence as the industry continues evolving faster than ever. With technology, self-labeled “Foodie” consumers are all revolutionizing dining trends and experiences.
Today, we see trends in action stations, not just for the dinner, but starting with the cocktail reception. After all, the cocktail reception is where fun and interaction really begins. Mini items are key for action stations, so small plates are encouraged, or sometimes no plates at all, relying on napkins and unique serviceware instead.
We ALWAYS customize a menu. The decision of designing a wedding with a menu packet is never an option for us. A customized menu allows us to have fun with the culinary design. Honestly, chefs are artists of taste and presentation so we say, “let them paint.” We like to give culinary teams a challenge, such as adapting the old standby wine and cheese pairing station, into something new, like an interactive beer or stout pairing experience. TABLETOP Tabletop is often the design element at a wedding with the most potential. Sure, couples think about the linen and a centerpiece, but for most, it stops there. When we think of tabletop design, we look for ways to be creative and the opportunity to really have fun.
We want to encourage you to push the envelope by playing with all the varied aspects of table settings. Think about styling each place setting, not just setting the table. Consider the multiple layers of plates, then mix them up. Mix and match is hot in home interiors, so don’t be afraid to mix up your china.
To style this table, at left, we selected black and white bowls with chopsticks, and added a floral accent placed carefully atop a obi-style folded napkin. To add variation across the table, we alternated chocolate and pistachio napkins, fitting perfectly with our Zen inspired aesthetic.
Table selection will significantly affect the overall look of the design. Long harvest style tables, for example, provide an opportunity to design elongated centerpieces. However, the same elongated floral centerpieces would not work on a round table. Table selection will affect significant pieces of your design and is an integral part of the decision process. Selecting complimenting pieces to style the table is your first opportunity to think of the table as a whole.
As eclectic and rough luxe looks come to the forefront, we look for ways to translate it to the tabletop. Floral china and pearlized flatware combine beautifully with tasting glasses and table lamps, at right. These were all highlighted on a sleek gloss black table.
If eclectic is your inspiration, multiple china patterns even within the same genre make an impact. Consider mixing antique china patterns and utilizing different cups and saucers with the coffee service to change things up. Traditional doesn’t just translate to matchy – matchy or dripping in intricate gold baroque patterns. Traditional elements like a paisley or damask pattern can be incorporated in a modern way when printed on glass or wood. Taking an old world design and utilizing it in a fashion forward way will be unexpected.

When it has to be perfect, setting the table requires measuring each element. Flatware is measured from the edge of the table, the stemware from the edge of the plates and chargers. Align the seating from the edge of the table so the chair gently brushes the linen and is not tucked under the table. Precision is extremely important to achieve the look of uniformity and perfection.

STATEMENT PIECES With each wedding we design, we like to think of the elements that can be amplified to create a wow factor to truly take our couples, as well as their guests, by surprise. Just as an oversized piece of jewelry becomes a statement piece to an outfit, so does the design element that creates an impactful impression. With statement pieces, the impact is immediate and the look will set the tone.
Large floral arrangements can make a big statement. We call them ‘impact pieces’. Placement of large arrangements, architectural elements or repetition of items, visible as guests arrive at the ceremony or the reception venue, leaves quite the impression. Often overlooked, the entrance is so important in creating a sense of arrival. For us, these are the opportunities we look for first, knowing the more obvious uses of floral fall easily into place.
We like to create masses of floral together for the maximum impact. One big piece will always get more attention than many smaller arrangements. The towering entrance piece, at left, elicits an immediate response upon arrival. It clearly says, “this reception is going to be different!” With the addition of backlighting, the impression is stunning. The knack of infusing space with unexpected touches to maximize impact, makes an impressive

statement.
Sometimes the simplest forms can have the biggest impact when combined together in multiples to create a statement piece. Think about any large voids of space you might have at the venue and ask yourself how you can use these to your advantage. If you have cavernous ceilings and want to make the space more intimate, you can create a dramatic focal point by using ceiling draping, chandeliers or Italian lights.
Statement pieces enhance the environment that already exists. By utilizing a collection of candles, the natural architecture in the event space, at right, is magnified.
Candles are a simple way to create a statement, it just generally requires a lot of them. Think of lining the exterior stairs of the venue with hundreds of votives or great luminaries. This will create a sense of arrival.

Candles are also beautiful at the ceremony. Consider an eclectic assortment of sizes to decorate the altar or even line the aisles. Floating candles work especially well in these applications.
Ice can be used as a statement in ways that are unexpected. An ice sculpture can take on many forms; from walls of ice used as decor, to smaller accents. Thinking outside of the cube so to speak, utilize ice as a centerpiece on guest tables. When combined with blazing calla lilies, at left, these pieces create great impact. Thinking bigger, an ice wall or ice curtains can be used as a back drop to a bar or in a lounge

Making a statement with your centerpieces is as easy as thinking about new elements that can be combined with flowers. Unique vases and other containers or sculptural elements can bring instant excitement to the tablescape.
A traditional element seen at many weddings is a place card table. Take an opportunity to make a big statement with a tree dripping with orchid blossoms. We incorporated this striking design statement into the cocktail reception, making it the focal point of the area, at right. With white backlighting added to the effect, we surrounded the tree with a semi-circle of wood columns, each holding a natural branch sculpture and a single phalaenopsis orchid. We further amplified the effect by uplighting the background with bold red lighting.

The wedding cake is traditionally the centerpiece of the reception, but today is often overlooked. We like to utilize the wedding cake as a magnificent decor element. As trends in 2015 move towards tradition, you can take the wedding cake back to center stage. Think of how you can add something extra to make it impactful or different.
Five separated cake tiers in tone-on-tone ivory created a statement all alone. To amplify the look, each layer featured a different motif, from raised relief damask patterns, to hand piped filigree. Opulent oval crystal pedestals and jeweled button accents added to the effect.

STYLED FLORAL There is a distinction between wedding flowers and styled floral. Many couples treat reception flowers as an after thought, following their selection of personal flowers such as bouquets and boutonnieres. Intrinsically, flowers should be brought into the design and styling of the wedding as a whole. While we believe flowers are a key element for a wedding, in 2015 styled floral that coordinates with all aspects of the wedding design, is the way to go. Like the design of a lace pattern in fabrics, floral assists in enhancing the details of the wedding, weaving all of the elements together.
As an organic form, floral provides three-dimensional textures that can enhance certain design elements. Combined together, styled floral is when flowers are used in nontraditional, innovative ways or unique varieties to create a dramatic look. The smooth pristine petals of a cattleya orchid, at left, is an unexpected centerpiece to this arrangement of textured greens. The petals allow the delicate texture of the orchid to pop from the variegated greens. The bear grass becomes a flowing sculptural aspect; bringing a threading whimsy to the contemporary feel of the arrangement.
Styled floral may have you looking to elements you have never even considered, like forced branches, succulents or even driftwood branches. These unique elements can add

interest and a great juxtaposition to more common wedding flowers. When blended together you can create designs that become living works of art.
Sometimes designing flowers is not so much about the volume, as it is about strategic placement. Clearly, we all love over-the-top arrangements and they do have their place at a wedding. However, when you are selecting styled floral, look for thoughtfully designed placements that blend with the movement of the room. Often, the smallest floral can also have the greatest impact.
The smallest of these arrangements will be the boutonnieres. The single pink rose blossom, at right, is amped up with interesting and contrasting pale green foliage. Consider using unconventional accents within the boutonniere, including feathers, seed pods, acorns or even thistle.

Think of other natural garden produce to provide interest and texture. Citrus fruits add a great aroma and vegetables can add great shapes. An artichoke added a large focal point and unexpected textures to the arrangement, at left. Mixed with the varied tones of blues, greens, oranges and purples, the end result was a unique arrangement with a harvest feel.
Covering an entire table with flowers and weaving the place settings within the floral branches is another bold idea. To have a place setting completely surrounded by floral is creative, and by interjecting different vessels and styles you can also create a full effect.
When using long tables, think of ways to elongate the floral design. Tight compact arrangements can minimize the impact of the floral, but when cleverly extended

with driftwood, the centerpiece becomes a dramatic structure. Contrasting vases or accessories can add a pop to the overall arrangement. Unique florals like thistle or succulents bring in new color options to counteract the more expected florals.
Consider unexpected places to use floral accents. We like to include simple florals in rest rooms. The phalaenopsis orchids, at right, added a nice surprise when placed in an apothecary-style vase.
Traditional flowers like roses can make a fresh impact when used in clusters. Common elements draw more attention when done en mass. It can be as simple as laying a bunch of roses on their side and having them cascade out of a vessel. You can also surround the arrangement with mercury glass containers and candles.

DRAMATICALLY
The ceremony is definitely an opportunity to make a big impact. We like to create a statement piece for every ceremony. Sometimes we design an oversized altar piece, other times, we choose to decorate the church doors, or surprise guests with a large arrangement in the foyer.
Rich black feathers added an unexpected touch to this asymmetrical altar arrangement, at left, which combined red roses, calla lilies and hanging amaranthus. Even more drama was added with dozens of smaller arrangements in coordinating flowers that hung with ribbon from the limbs of the giant elm tree that became the background of the stunning ceremony.

USING ASYMMETRICAL
SIGNATURE: RUSTIC The wedding of Sarah + Christopher evoked an atmosphere that was rustic, yet comfortable. Self described as ‘foodies’ the culinary experience was a priority. Their love for a casual and relaxed afternoon and an evening that was fun and festive, gave us just the inspiration in creating their signature wedding. Sarah liked the idea of an outdoor ceremony and reception that was reminiscent of a California vineyard. The couple had recently relocated to California and wanted to evoke the feel of fresh produce stands and a farm to table atmosphere that included the finest selection of wines and champagne.
From the beginning, Sarah knew that she wanted The Wedding Guys® to design her long-distance wedding. She knew that she wanted all of the details of a perfectly curated ceremony and reception, but now living in California had limited opportunity to meet with suppliers and make selections. A few pre-wedding trips and a lot of back-and-forth email, would be the best way to accomplish all that Sarah and Christopher wanted for their celebration. Fortunately for us, Sarah contacted us before any of the major decisions had been made, so we were able to style the entire wedding including shopping with her for her bridal gown.
We knew that a vintage inspired lace gown would be perfect. Together, we selected a beautiful fluted-skirt gown with a delicate sheer overlay. A deep neckline and open back

was accented with all-over lace. A toffee belt featured an off-center hand crafted ribbon
and lace flowers. Cowboy boots and a beautiful lace flower for Sarah’s hair would complete the look.
The guest experience began upon their arrival. A vintage bicycle featured a basket of gorgeous flowers welcoming them to the ceremony. The bicycle was a repeated theme throughout the event. When Sarah sent us their engagement portraits, we knew we had the opportunity to expand on the inspired shoot. They had selected vintage clothing and a bicycle built for two. The selection of photographs seemed perfect for the invitation. We designed a series of photo matted boards, each would include a photograph on one side and the wedding invitations detail on the other. We selected a line drawing of a vintage bicycle built for two and used it in repetition on the pieces.

The pieces were tied together with string and placed in a craft paper-covered box. We selected a series of stamps to continue the vintage effect.
Before the ceremony, guests sipped iced tea and lemonade that was styled with large glass decanters and red and white paper straws. A distressed sideboard held mason jars and arrangements of fresh lemons. A weathered table featured a birdcage for cards and the thumbprint tree guest book.
We embellished the grapevine wrapped gazebo with strung pearl, teardrop chandeliers and for the ceremony we created eclectic seating. We combined metal garden benches in two styles with stools, wood benches, bamboo folding chairs and hay bails. To embellish, we

accented with oversized burlap pillows.
For the cocktail reception, we placed champagne bottles in vintage wash tubs. Glasses of champagne featured sprigs of lavender. Guests played vintage games including badminton, bocce ball and croquet. Hightop tables featured heavy woven linens with a weathered blue stripe.
After enjoying champagne and lawn games, guests moved onto the reception where we had designed a hearty display of grilled vegetables, gourmet breads, crackers, cheese and olives. A large farm table featured the abundant display.
Under the reception tent, we placed a mixture of furniture including vintage sofas, tables, trunks and sideboards. Mix and match vintage flatware was placed in open drawers for guests to grab.

CHAMPAGNE TOAST KEEPS PEOPLE INTRIGUED.
A delicious dessert buffet included fruit tarts, petite pastries and caramel apples. A small two-tiered wedding cake atop a milk-glass pedestal, featured a delicate floral motif piped in buttercream.
Sarah and Christopher sat at a duet table covered with cappuccino linen with black hydrangea print. An oval back brown leather occasional chair and an oval back toffee damask chair were perfect seating for the new bride and groom. The table featured lace runners and vintage glassware filled with pink and peach garden roses, orange ranunculus and pink stock.
The evening continued with dancing, cigars and a roaring bonfire which took the chill out of the evening air.

SIGNATURE: DERBY On radio and in person, Falen and Paul’s infectious enthusiasm draws listeners in; Falen on KDWB’s Dave Ryan in the Morning Show and Paul (best known as “Meatsauce”) for KFAN’s Power Trip Morning Show, —it’s why they’re radio personalities and why they “connect” with their audiences.
Falen had worked with us, making appearances at our Twin Cities Bridal Show and Unveiled Wedding Event. Before we knew it, we became fast friends. Falen and Paul needed help to transform their venue—a vast historic space with “blank page” potential— into two distinct ceremony and reception spaces. The goal was fun, romantic, and rustic, but not rustic in the way of burlap and mason jars; Falen wanted more of a southern vibe. This was achieved with horseshoes, an oversized horse painting, and signature cocktails of Mint Julep and Oaks Lily; a nod to Falen’s Indiana roots and her favorite sporting event, The Kentucky Derby.
For the ceremony, we created a massive vertical flower hedge adorned with thousands of pastel roses as a backdrop. We used back-lit drapery on either side of the aisle to “hide” the reception tables, and lit hundreds of candles along the aisle to set a romantic ambiance. We selected a bolt of weathered damask fabric as our aisle runner and

beautiful mahogany chiavari chairs added to the warmth of the room.
Being radio personalities, the couple had strong opinions about music. Paul decided the groomsmen would walk down to “Into the Mystic” by Van Morrison; while the bride walked down—in a stunning Reem Acra gown— to Ellie Goulding’s “Your Song.” The couple exchanged vows they had each written, and once they were pronounced man and wife, chose “You’re My Best Friend” by Queen as their recessional.
After the ceremony, guests were guided to a cocktail reception in the lobby for appetizers, photos, and cocktails. A large bar was placed under the seven oversized crystal chandeliers in the lobby. Gold satin linens topped hightop tables as wait staff passed mint juleps. During that time, we transformed the ceremony space into the beautifully decorated reception.

We set the reception space with a variety of tables. Wood hightops with spin up stools, a set of four tasting tables with spin out stools, cocktail tables seating four guests, featuring moire linens and larger tables seating eight that featured ivory quilted linens. Varied arrangements topped each set of tables. Some featured hobnail glass vases, other tall silver trophy style trumpet vases. We mixed in gold horseshoes we had painted to bring a bit of glamour to the vintage derbystyle reception tables.
The room featured two separate bars (a his and her’s bar). Her bar, featured a hedge backdrop and a gold tufted bar with two crystal chandeliers hung above. His bar, featured a masculine look with a black tufted bar and on oversized

painting of a horse. In front of each bar, was a lounge setting with tufted sofas and large silver wood coffee tables.
An oversized harvest table, for the bridal party, featured gold sequin linens. We selected two blue velvet oval back chairs for Falen and Paul. An eclectic assortment of candles and flower centerpieces ran the length of the table. Flowers flowed from wood boxes, small mercury glass containers and tall glass vases. Behind the bride and groom another wall of green hedge filled with roses completed the look, along with three crystal chandeliers hung above the table. Above the vibrant reception space, we hung Italian lights that cast a warm glow over the entire space.
The menu was an eclectic mix of the couple’s favorite foods. An interactive wok station included rice and noodle options, Teriyaki chicken, baked tofu, spicy shrimp and Szechuan pork.

Accompaniments included fresh vegetables, water chestnuts, chopped peanuts and wonton strips. Another station featured bookshelves filled with bites that included beef lettuce wraps, mini carnitas tostada and mini vegetable egg rolls.
The wedding party (all 16 bridesmaids and groomsmen) entered to “Everybody” by the Backstreet Boys. The couple shared their first dance to “You’re the One” by The Black Keys.
Paul and Falen’s celebration was a party for the ages—a little bit of glitter, romantic shades of blush, gold, and light orange. The venue was as unique as the couple, and traces of their personality were found in every corner, from the vows, song selections and the food.

SIGNATURE: CALIFORNIA CHIC The wedding of Shara + Ross blended a sense of tradition with a clean and modern aesthetic. The couple wanted a traditional Catholic ceremony with a celebration for 220 of their family and friends at their home, immediately following the ceremony. Our task would be to create a magical experience for their guests, by taking over their front lawn to create a reception space unlike anything anyone had ever seen before.
Ensuring etiquette and elegance was the prevailing inspiration for the wedding, and that great food and entertainment was central to the celebration, we created signature moments for guests to remember. Above all, the couple wanted to make sure fun and delight was abound for all the guests.
It all started with the invitations and the “H” laurel wreath, which would encompass the overall inspiring direction. Gold, ivory and blush became the color palette for the day, blossoming in fresh Hydrangeas, Bianca Roses, Gladiolas, Queen Anne’s Lace, Sahara Roses and Tibet Roses along with lush greenery.
We brought in the light blue and blush of the hydrangea in the Monique Lhuillier china for the dinner, while the contemporary hammered metal flatware and beautiful crystal

stemware, rounded out the more formal aspect of the evening.
We are rarely asked to design a traditional styled wedding. This wedding was an exciting treat that would include as much focus on the ceremony, as it would on the reception. We loved the fact that the ceremony would take place in a historic church built in 1900, with Romanesque style and beautiful classical lines.
Our design enhanced the church with a beautiful floral arrangement when guests arrived and one large pedestal arrangement statement piece to enhance the altar area.
The first surprise of the day came in the form of voices. We received dispensation to bring the Choir of the Basilica of St. Mary as a surprise for the groom’s mother who supported the church’s music ministry.

The signature element for this wedding would be the 66 foot by 100 foot Arcum structure with glass walls and a clear arched ceiling. The structure sat prominently at the top of the winding drive, nestled perfectly in the forest of trees that outlined the front lawn. Inside we set a combination of long harvest tables along the perimeter, and round tables surrounding the LED dance floor. Above, we hung oversized chandeliers, each with a waterfall of glass balls.
As a light passing shower created a rainbow over the home, guests were ushered into the unveiled clear custom tent structure for dinner with the fivefoot-tall wedding cake and Lebanese sword prominently displayed. The cake was surrounded by a cascading floral garland placed center stage on the lit

dance floor.
As the formal cocktail hour began with guests surrounding the custom made acrylic bars, butlers passed more robust hors d’oeuvres such as “Spaghetti and Meatballs”, Crispy Arancini, Beef Carpaccio and Caprese skewers.
Key elements for the wedding included – amazing food with a six course custom dinner menu, executed by a staff of ten chefs artistically presenting each course! The dinner menu was designed with the couples favorite cuisine starting with the first course of King Crab & Avocado Salad, followed by Lobster Pappardelle an English pea crema, smoked Reggiano and one Maine Lobster claw. The salad course featured frisee and baby arugula, smoked paprika cheese, and drizzled orange vinaigrette, all featured on top of a vibrant colored watermelon radish.

The White Peach Sorbet cleansed the palate for the main entrée of either a grilled 60-Day Dry Aged New York of Prime Beef – or Galantine of Kadejan Chicken with spinach and oyster mushroom stuffing.
The PIÈCE DE RÉSISTANCE was the wedding cake in tiers of alternating flavors. The first tier featured lemon cake with raspberry filling and lemon Italian butter cream. The second featured white cake with vanilla Italian butter cream icing. The top tier was chocolate cake with Italian butter cream filling and icing.
The final surprise of the evening was the Lebanese Dance Troupe, which was a gift to the bride and guests from the groom, allowing everyone to delight in the bride’s heritage. The guests had so much fun, they were up on the dance floor dancing with the troupe.
