It’s easy to give up, tough to endure, but once you achieve your goal the rewards are priceless. This edition has been by far the most challenging to complete but through all the adversity and great moments our team pushed our talents and thoughts to another level. Quintin, Zoe and I have collectively put in over 4800 hours (and counting) into this issue. Not to mention the numerous designers, film makers, stylists, photographers, MUA’s, interns, boutiques and businesses around the world who have donated their time and talents to make UnZip Magazine a growing success. This edition would not be the same without you, we are extremely grateful for each and every one of you. The 4th edition of Unzip was inspired by Kirigami, the Japanese art form of folding and cutting paper. The content was crafted to mirror our imagination and interpretation of Kirigami. We designed the pages to draw your attention to the razor cut design of our 3-D paper butterfly installation (shown left). Produced Unzip the Runway, interviewed Fashion Designer Mondo Guerra. While cutting, folding and designing our way to the 4th edition. Blessings,

Meet a paper doll Written by Ieshia Hill
“If there were an equation used to produce international fashion and décor, it would look something like this: (Paper + Knife – Fear) + (Imagination) = Papel Picado artist, Beatriz Vasquez.”
| 12 |
The equation looks simple yet it’s the formula that combines versatility, delicacy, and creative expression to create a magical work of art. At a young age, Beatriz was exposed to the rich culture of her Spanish and Aztec family heritage that consisted of artisans and artists. She was taught the art of gardening, furniture design, carpentry, & the importance of possessing a “can-do” work ethic. “This rich exposure shared with love and encouragement created opportunities for me to explore different art mediums and test my abilities to create,” says Beatriz. You may ask,What is Papel Picado? The intriguing medium is produced by cutting out designs as if you were drawing directly onto paper. Beatriz first began creating Papel Picado on tissue paper for family celebrations, but found herself unable to put her knife down. Inspired by creativity, she began exploring various grades of paper and designs to challenge her cre at ive mind. “I found opportunities for expression that I
hadn’t experienced in other mediums,” says Beatriz. “I can’t wait to make my next paper cut.” The Herron School of Art Design Alum, full time artist and teacher overcame the challenge of teaching students immersed in a new language and culture by the use of her creative abilities. “Often my students learn best when I combine elements of art, creation and personal exploration into their lesson,” says Beatriz. The subtraction of fear is the most important aspect of the equation. The innovation created through paper cutting is stimulated through the act of fearlessness. “I have found that an artist’s creativity can be limited by fear but there is hidden strength and beauty in provisioning and creating something completely new,” says Beatriz. Remaining fearless has been the key to success for Beatriz. “All of my work is original in design and content, and I am constantly pushing myself and the paper to new limits.”

There is a feeling of freedom and inner peace when we ignore society’s pressure to fit into a specific mold; to be a mere cut out of someone else and to be true to ourselves. Our power lies within us and to tap into this power we must embrace our true self. “A Walking Piece of Art” UnZip had an opportunity to capture an exclusive interview with Project Runway Season 8 Finalist and winner of Project Runway All Stars, Mondo Guerra. UnZIP: You are looking runway ready as always. How are you doing Mondo? Mondo: I’m good. I just finished the “Find Your Magic” event at Macy’s. The energy was really good.
| 18 |
UnZIP: The Indiana fashion community is growing at a rapid pace. Can you tell us about the Denver fashion community? Mondo: I think there is a strong fashion community in Denver; we just haven’t gotten the visibility. When I got on [Project Runway S e a s on 8 ] , e ve r y b o dy recognized that ‘‘Wow, we can really showcase Denver as a fashion powerhouse’’. Faline got on the show and she’s from Denver and Julie Chinery is from Grand Junction, Colorado. It’s just about putting in the time. I think that is relative to anything you do, as well as being committed to where you come from and building those relationships to support other designers. I think it’s extremely important to schedule monthly meet ups for designers within the community to bring in their work, critique it and talk about it. Plus it adds a little competition which is healthy, especially when you’re trying to progress. UnZIP: I love the fact that you stay in Denver yet travel around the world bringing opportunities to Denver. Can you tell me how you started designing?
Mondo: I started when I was 19 years old and I was actually a music [piano] major. I got burned out going to school and practicing piano eight hours a day. I decided to take a year off and found the rave community where I was able to express myself visually. I was a walking piece of art. I applied the artistic elements of me playing the piano to this new outlet of fashion. People started to notice me for how I put things together. That’s what got me interested in the fashion world. I met Susan Murphy who was a fashion designer in Denver. She took me in as an apprentice where I began doing millinery work for her. She gave me the basic skill sets needed to construct a garment. I entered a portfolio contest, won it and moved to New York. It all happened really fast. I came back to Denver and applied to work in a costume shop. I learned how to be a competitive from there. Then I got on the show, I can say that the costume shop helped that a lot. UnZIP: When you audienced for Project Runway did you have to do anything funny or unique to show your personality. Mondo: No, I’m on the auditions team now and I see everyone come in and try to stand out and try be funny. If I think you’re trying too hard, it can be read not only through the audience but through your clothes. We are there to look at their work and select the best contestants. UnZIP: Can you give us any clues for your next collection? Mondo: Well, I’m really into comic books from the 1960’s right now! Thank you Mondo, we look forward to following your career.

Eat, love, and enjoy food from all over the world. We had the opportunity to dine at one of the most exciting Japanese steak houses in the Midwest. For over 40 years, Fujiyama has provided a unique family-style dining experience. We were honored and excited to have this one-on-one experience. Traditional influences filled the room’s décor, while the sleek lighting was equally serene and inviting.
avocado, cucumber, and crab. The final selection was the deep fried Snow Mountain roll filled with crab and white tuna wrapped in soy bean paper. The chef capped off the dish with a blend of two special sauces drizzled on the top. The texture of the tuna and crab along with the special sauces made the Snow Mountain roll fascinating and exceptionally appetizing.
We sat in the dining area where we were presented with an assortment of delicious Sushi & Chirashi. The vibrant colors were arranged as a stunning work of art on a platter. We indulged in the Las Vegas Roll, a deep fried Tempura with jalapeño, smoked salmon, avocados, cream cheese, spicy mayo, and Thai chili sauce. The balance of sweetness with the smoked salmon made the Las Vegas Roll a group favorite. The next roll was the Dynamite Roll, filled with deep fried shrimp,
Attention to detail and quality are of high importance at Fujiyama. Owner, Jason Cummings selects the finest ingredients and meats to feature in the dishes. The Chirashi is an excellent example. The dish consisted of finely sliced eel, tuna, salmon, octopus and white tuna over sushi rice. The rice was surprisingly sweet, which was a perfect combination added to the fresh fish. We were then escorted to the opposite side of the restaurant, where suddenly all five senses

were activated at once. We inhaled the scent of the fresh herbs, sauces, onions, mushrooms, and zucchini while simultaneously following the movements of Hibachi Chef Cuberto’s, slicing movements with grace and precision. Fire erupted from the onion volcano, then we heard the sound of shrimp, lobster, scallops, and steaks sizzling on the table top grills. We concluded our experience by tasting and enjoying the perfection of all the flavors, vegetables and meats with a side of fried rice. Fujiyama is an excellent restaurant to bring the family, friends, as well as a nice place to partake in an intimate dinner date. From the healthy food choices, amazing service, to the exciting Hibachi Chiefs; Fujiyama is a premier destination to eat, love & enjoy. FT-Unzip the Runway began with only a few in attendance and has evolved into a sold-out premier fashion event. What makes IFT Unzip the Runway so remarkable is that it not only highlights Indiana designers and artists, it connects designers from all over the globe. As well as gives back to the community through internships and youth programs. “I started the show because I’m a fashion designer and understand the struggles designers experience trying to make it in the fashion industry.” says Dlang.
IFT-Unzip the Runway’s primary focus are the fashion designers, but we incorporate all mediums of art from photography to graphic design, sculptures, painters, set designers, models, jewelry designers, wardrobe stylists and that’s just the beginning. This year IFT featured international designer, Beatriz Vasquez who designed clothing, eyelashes, backdrops and an exhibition made of paper using elaborate cutout designs. Along with highlighted designer’s new collections featuring D. Lamont Couture, Studio NTK, as well as Dlang’s very own collection. IFT also extends opportunities to business owners, bloggers, writers, media and retail establishments to participate in IFT as a sponsor, exhibitor and or as a guest. La Dolce Salon and Spa was the official hair and make-up team, who styled the looks for the showcase and display models. “It was important to create something more than a fashion show. I wanted to create an experience where designers could gain resources, education, networking and selling opportunities.” says Dlang.

All that matters is where you’re going,” says Yolanda. After having two children and three knee surgeries, her chances of playing For The WNBA appeared to be a distant dream. Future of Fashion Honduras

Written by Soreyda Benedit-Begley in collaboration with Ieshia Hill
In the heart of Honduras lays the beautiful rainforest of the Lancetilla Botanical Gardens. The serene garden is not only the mecca for relaxation it is now the heart of fashion. The Lancetilla Botanical Garden lays the birthplace of The Future of Fashion Honduras. The show was organized by Honduras native and fashion designer Soreyda Benedit de Begley. “This is the first time I have done a fashion event in Honduras.” says Soreyda. This is the fourth time Soreyda has organized the Future of Fashion. The previous events were held in Lexington, Kentucky where she currently resides. Back in 2009, she and a local Lexington photographer [Richie Wireman] partnered for a show that was a blend of fashion, art, and photography. “Before long, we had fifteen designers from the region interested in being a part of the show, describes Soreyda.” In result of the successful show, the Lexington Fashion Collaborative was founded. A nonprofit organization focused on supporting emerging talent in the areas of fashion and other art forms. At the time, Honduras was in the middle of a political, economic, and social crisis. Soreyda became a catalyst for change in Honduras through fashion. “We need now, more than ever, to work together to guarantee a better future for Honduras,” says Soreyda.
Soreyda and her family packed their bags to head to Honduras for nearly eight months. Upon her arrival, Soreyda immediately got to work and collaborated with a group of women who were a part of the Women’s Co-op. They became heavily involved with the Future of Fashion. “These ladies were ready to work and they said to me, “Let’s do it,” says Soreyda. They aided in finding sponsorships, models, and performers, decorating, and were given the opportunity to showcase their handmade jewelry made of fruits, seeds, bamboo and wood. “It was a bonding experience for all of us,” says Soreyda. Soreyda purchased the least expensive materials she could find from plastic bags, to kitchen rag fabric to make her collection for the show. While operating on a small budget, The Future of Fashion had a remarkable turnout. The stage was draped in native flowers and palm tree leaves surrounded by bamboo plants. “We were able to make some money for the Amalancetila Women’s Co-op. Most importantly, we did something together,” says Soreyda. “People from three countries got together to make a difference for others and for themselves. It was magical and we are going to do it again next year.” Coordinadora El futuro de la Moda Honduras www.hondurasmoda.com

hen making a difference in the lives of others, it doesn’t always start with what to give but rather the reason for giving. One person who understands his reasoning in making a difference in the world is Godfrey Coker. Godfrey is from Sierra Leone. He came to the United States because his father wanted his family to escape the pain and rough life of the country. In 2007, Godfrey decided to help his people back home by creating a nonprofit organization called House of Restoration Africa.
The organization is committed to providing programs that focus on educational, recreational, and developmental needs geared toward empowering the people affected by the civil war. UnZip Magazine had the chance to sit down for a one-on-one interview with Godfrey where he talked about his event during the Indianapolis Super Bowl. His collaboration with D.M.C. from Run D.M.C. and future outreach programs in West Africa and Sierra Leone. To read the full interview visit unzipmagazine.com.
